Titanic was discovered during a top-secret mission, report says

 

The story of how the Titanic was found is widely known, but some of the most interesting details are only now emerging, reports USA Today. A new exhibit at the National Geographic Museum in Washington, DC, reveals the once top-secret story.

"The Navy is finally discussing it," Robert Ballard tells National Geographic. Ballard is the oceanographer and Navy commander who found the wreck in 1985.

The exhibit, Titanic: The Untold Story, explains how the Navy had commissioned Ballard to explore the wreckage of two nuclear submarines. The subs were resting on the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean, and the Navy wanted to determine if the nuclear reactors on board were potentially dangerous and why the subs had sunk.

Ballard asked if he could look for the Titanic after he had completed the mission (which would be the first of two) because he believed the passenger liner was located between the two subs.

Deputy chief of naval operations Ronald Thunman agreed, never suspecting that Ballard might be successful. "I was a little short with him," recalls Thunman, who stressed that Ballardโ€™s mission was to study the sunken warships, not look for the Titanic.

He approached it as if he were photographing a deer hiding in winter: "I'd look for its footprints and follow its footsteps," he says. At 2am on Sept. 1, 1985, submersible robotic technology began delivering images of the Titanicโ€™s boiler.

"We were at the very spot the Titanic sank," Ballard recalls. "We were there." Of course, the Navy hadn't expected Ballard to find the Titanic, so when that happened, "they got really nervous because of the publicity," Ballard says.

 

The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 6, 2019. (This documentary claims a fire was part of the Titanic's undoing.)

The combination of the two companies "will result in an integrated group with more stable cash flow and a lower cost of capital," Mr. Zambrano said, adding that it would give Cemex "scale and global reach to compete effectively" and profitably.

Cemex, which is based in Monterrey, Mexico, has expanded from a local cement company to a multinational player over the last 20 years by making a string of deals. The acquisition of RMC would be the largest in Cemex's nearly 100-year history. Cemex said it expected the purchase to generate $200 million of cost savings a year by 2007.

 

RMC would give Cemex a strong presence in Germany, Austria and Portugal, as well as in Eastern Europe. RMC had sales of ยฃ4.87 billion ($8.77 billion) last year, and pretax profits of ยฃ133 million ($239.4 million).

 

After exceptional items, however, it had a loss of ยฃ132.9 million ($239.2 million) and a basic loss per share of 59 pence ($1.06). It has more than 2,200 operating units worldwide.

 

In an effort to maintain profit margins, cement companies like Cemex have increasingly been buying businesses that purchase their products. Cement is made from finely ground limestone and clay mixed with water, while concrete, RMC's main product, is made using cement, sand, gravel and stones.

 

On Monday, Cemex purchased 50 million shares of RMC, or about 19 percent of the company's outstanding shares on the London Exchange, as part of the takeover.

VOP is trying to protect a likely crime scene potentially involving child trafficking and abuse. Yet VOP feels compelled to publish a request to the local Sheriff to protect VOP from being carted off and arrested by the FBI.

 

If Wray had any brains, decency or management skills he would be on the ground in Tucson making sure a vetted team was in place to conduct a successful investigation into what happened and finding the kids. Instead, he lets the local FBI office act like uncaring, bad guy jerks.

Democrats outline demands for North Korea deal

 

Senate Democrats told President Trump on Monday that they wonโ€™t accept a deal to lift sanctions on North Korea unless the country completely and permanently eliminates its nuclear and missile testing program.

 

"Sanctions relief by the U.S. and our allies should be dependent on dismantlement and removal of North Koreaโ€™s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sen. CDC would lose control of emergency drug stockpile under House bill

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would lose control over massive warehouses of drugs, medical supplies, and vaccines under a House bill being taken up this week.

 

The provision, part of the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act, or PAHPA, would fulfill a request by President Trump to shift the emergency supplies, formally known as the Strategic National Stockpile, from the CDC to the Department of Health and Human Services' assistant secretary for Preparedness and Response.

 

Proponents of shifting the $547 million program to a different agency say the supplies contained in the warehouses are meant not only to address the threats under which they were initially created, such as a terrorist attack or nuclear war, but also to fight off infectious diseases and to respond to natural disasters and even more unexpected threats. When the stockpile was created in 1999, the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response did not exist.

 

That agency is also responsible for choosing and buying the supplies in the stockpile, so supporters say the roles should fall under the same agency.

 

Rep. Susan Brooks, R-Ind., one of the authors of the bill, said the move would streamline public health emergency response measures so that "we are in a better position to respond with the appropriate supplies and resources to adequately protect the homeland and everyone who lives in it.โ€

 

Still, critics say the change would be disruptive when an emergency comes because the CDC has established relationships with local healthcare agencies after operating the stockpile for roughly two decades. The Senate version of the bill, which advanced almost unanimously out of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, did not contain the stockpile change.

 

An aide to Brooks said members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee's health subcommittee likely will have concerns and will want more information about the proposed change during the hearing on the bill, scheduled for Wednesday. The American Public Health Association has said that it has "serious concerns" about the potential transfer.

 

As the bill is being considered, the U.S. and other countries are facing various outbreaks. In the U.S., at least eight states have reported outbreaks and deaths from hepatitis A, an illness that can lead to liver failure or death if left untreated. The illnesses appear to be spreading through needle sharing or through infections that first sicked restaurant workers and then spread to customers.

 

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is fighting a deadly outbreak of Ebola with an experimental vaccine and financial assistance from the U.S. In India, at least 17 people have died from the Nipah virus, which can lead to severe brain swelling and death. Global health officials have sent an experimental antibody to the region.

 

The pandemics bill up for consideration originally passed soon after Hurricane Katrina destroyed the Gulf Coast and a strain of bird flu was spreading across Europe and Asia. The law aimed to better organize the ways that federal, state, and local departments respond to outbreaks and disasters, including by working with healthcare facilities, encouraging vaccine development, and boosting the number of healthcare workers.

 

Congress has until the end of September to pass a final version before the program expires. The law has been in place since 2006, and the latest provisions would go into effect over the next five years.

 

The House bill makes other deviations from the Senate version. For instance, it gives the HHS secretary authority to transfer money out of an emergency response fund as needs emerge. In recent years, public health funding has been mired in political debates, which has resulted in delayed appropriations and has caused the secretary to shift money from other agencies.

 

The idea, said the aide to Brooks, is put forward by "members who recognize that going from crisis to crisis with emergency supplementals isn't necessarily the best way to respond to public health needs."

 

The Senate version uses clarifying language about when the funds can be immediately used.

 

Subcommittee Chairman Michael Burgess, R-Texas, said it was "critical" to reauthorize the program in a timely way.

 

โ€œThis is important legislation that will bolster our nationโ€™s preparedness infrastructure, and support the development of critical medical countermeasures in the instances of a wide-ranging variety of attacks," Burgess said. "Our nation has learned much from events at home and abroad since the programโ€™s last reauthorization."

A relative of mine, a hardcore liberal, has started down the path of the red pill.

US kills nearly 50 suspected terrorists in quiet war in Somalia

 

The U.S. military says it has killed 49 members of the militant group al Shabaab in three separate airstrikes over the past 12 days in Somalia.

 

The latest strike was conducted Saturday southwest of Bosasso, Somalia, in which 27 suspected terrorists were killed, according to the U.S. Africa Command.

 

Two other strikes southwest of the capital Mogadishu on May 23 and May 31 resulted in a total of 22 deaths, the U.S. said.

Africa Command does not release the type of aircraft used in the precision strikes, but Pentagon sources say most airstrikes in Somalia are carried out by American drones.

 

In all three recent strikes, the U.S. says it believes no civilians were killed.

 

The strikes were carried out in coordination with the government of Somalia, and are part of its counterterrorism campaign targeting terrorists, their training camps, and their havens throughout Somalia and the region.

The hold-up is not public support - no one likes the FED. The issue is avoiding financial collapse duing the transition/dismantling. I believe it will happen, but it will take time to do it right.

The chance that Vannevar is not related to the George Bushes of the White House is zero. I don't care what official knowledge keepers would have you believe. To claim they are not related is total drivel.

When you go up the line, it shows the Rev. as his Dad. If you travel down the line it's not there. [As I just did and took the screen shot] Also, as you travel up the line you get 3 "William Bush" in a row and then it dead ends.

 

Whereas the Prescott Bush goes back to England before the ancestors immigrated.
