Somalia's new PM Barre takes office

 

Hamza Abdi Barre became Somalia's 21st prime minister Saturday after receiving unanimous approval from Lower House MPs, as per Somalia's Radio Dalsan.

 

On June 15, Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed lawmaker Hamza Abdi Barre as the new Prime Minister.

 

At the time, Somalia's President said: โ€œI have based on my decision after assessing the knowledge, experience, capability of Hamza, and I came to the conclusion he is the right person who can discharge this new responsibility in this new Somalia at this new time.โ€

 

He ordered lawmakers to approve the new prime minister "as soon as possible," adding that he had asked Barre to advance the new government's key priorities most notably security, drought response, reconciliation, community development, and climate shock response.

 

Four consecutive failed rainy seasons, combined with high inflation, have left millions of Somalis facing food insecurity. Barre vowed to form a capable government capable of rescuing the country and its people.

 

โ€œI pledge to you as president and to the Somali people that I will work day and night and will stand up in discharging by obligation,โ€ he said.

 

Who is Hamza Barre?

 

Last December, Barre, 48, was elected to parliament for the first time. He was previously the chairman of the Jubaland regional electoral commission.

 

From 2011 to 2017, Barre was the secretary-general of Mohamud's Peace and Development Party. He is also a former senior adviser to the federal government and the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs.

 

He taught for many years in Mogadishu and Kismayo. He is a senior lecturer at Mogadishu University and a co-founder of Kismayo University.

 

Barre's appointment came exactly one month after Mohamud was elected president in a parliamentary vote, defeating Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed.

A Taliban official said that the death toll of the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Afghanistanโ€™s Paktika and Khost provinces has reached 1,500.

 

According to the Taliban official, the earthquake left more than 2,000 people injured.

 

In the same context, the Taliban movement has appealed for international support, as rescue efforts are being hindered by heavy rain and a lack of resources.

Large-scale earthquakes

Scores of people were killed in January when two quakes struck the western province of Badghis.

 

In 2015, more than 380 people were killed in Pakistan and Afghanistan when a 7.5-magnitude earthquake ripped across the two countries.

 

Afghanistan's deadliest recent earthquake killed 5,000 in May 1998, in the northeastern provinces of Takhar and Badakhshan.

 

The quake struck in the early hours of Wednesday at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), according to the United States Geological Survey.

 

It was felt as far away as Lahore in Pakistan, 480 kilometers from the epicenter.

In the anatomy of an economic crisis, a bank run is the point of no return.

 

Bank runs occur when people scramble to withdraw cash from banks in fear of collapse. In the worst cases, banksโ€™ liquid cash reserves are exhausted, not everyone gets their money and the bank defaults.

 

Itโ€™s a grim scenario which, fortunately, has occurred rarely in history.

 

The most significant bank runs in the United States took place during the 1930โ€™s Great Depression. More recently, there were runs on numerous U.S. banks during the Financial Crisis in 2008.

 

In Asia, bank runs have also been rare. A run on Japanese banks in 1927 led to the collapse of dozens of institutions across the country. There was a banking crisis in Myanmar in 2003 which the country has never really fully recovered from.

 

But perhaps since the Great Depression, none has been as significant compared to what is seemingly unfolding in China right now.

 

The Chinese bank run of 2022

 

In recent years it has become clear the Chinese people are losing faith in their financial institutions. Thereโ€™s been anger over harsh COVID lockdowns in Shanghai recently, while the collapse of China Evergrande saw rare public demonstrations as residents faced the prospect of losing their life savings used as deposits for housing.

 

Multiple sources contacted by Asia Markets, have confirmed deposits at the following six banks have been frozen since mid-April.

 

Yuzhou Xinminsheng Village Bank (located in Xuchang City, Henan Province)

Zhecheng Huanghuai Bank (City of Shangqui, Henan Province)

In a superbly tone-deaf statement, the Israeli official added that losing Abu Akleh was a "huge mistake", but that they need to "try to think forward for the future.โ€

 

Frej also highlighted the stark division within โ€œIsraelโ€ by saying: โ€œWe have a lot of problems. We know that we have a lot of problems, but this is a problem you cannot translate (into saying) Israel is an apartheid stateโ€.

 

For the longest time, Saudi Arabia claimed that it is not a supporter of normalization, citing its past support for Palestine and condemnation of Israeli violations against the Palestinian people. The 1990s and 2000s brought several ABC formations in North America (ABCC*, ABCN, ABCF). The relationship between these formations has always been considered strenuous. The Break the Chains conference in August 2003, along with sidebar discussions between collectives, brought about a better working relationship between the ABCF and ABCN formations.

 

*The ABCC was a short-lived formation, dying off in the early 1990s.

What is the ABCF?

 

In May of 1995, a small group of ABC collectives merged into a Federation whose aim was to focus on the overall support and defense of PP/POWs.

 

Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War are not in prison for committing social โ€œcrimes,โ€ nor are they criminals. Different PP/POWs participated in progressive and revolutionary movements at varying levels. Some in educational and community organizing, others in clandestine armed and offensive peopleโ€™s armies. All are in prison as a result of conscious political action, for building resistance, building, and leading movements and revolutionโ€ฆ for making change.

 

Many of us in some way or another are part of these very movements, part of that resistance that PP/POWs helped to build. As people continuing to struggle for change, we are obligated and it is our duty to support those people who are in prison as a result of struggling to make change.

 

Though some have a wider definition of Political Prisoners, we maintain that even if the definition of a Political Prisoner was expanded and widely accepted to include social prisoners of conscience, it needs to be clear that those who went to prison as a result of political action taken on the street would still demand our priority support. For movements to support other prisoners before we support the people who have gone to prison for building the very movements we now participate in is backward.

Some malware convinces people to buy MoneyPak cards in order to get their computer working again so perhaps that sort of strategy could be used? But what would be a _believable _scenario where somebody would be forced to solve a CAPTCHA image?

 

I remember back to a crazy incident where Comcast (an ISP) started injecting Javascript into pages over HTTP. This is horrific for so many reasons but itโ€™s completely true.

 

Not only were they injecting Javascript but they were doing it with poorly made Javascript which would no doubt break many pages that it was injected into. So we know that an ISP or two is willing to do dirty things such as this so why wouldnโ€™t they also force people to verify that theyโ€™re human and not abusing Comcastโ€™s precious internet service?

The 50-year-old remained there for a weekend as prison guards searched his own cell, she added.

 

โ€œPrison is a constant humiliation but what happened on Friday felt especially cruel,โ€ Moris, who married Assange in March, has said, adding that the guards had told their inmate that it had all been done โ€œfor his own protection.โ€

 

According to Moris, the guards were looking for any things that could be used by a person to take their own life. In the bare cell where Assange was placed, the guards checked his status every hour until he was allowed to return to his cell on Tuesday.

 

The WikiLeaks founder currently remains in the maximum security Belmarsh Prison in south-eastern London, having been placed there in April 2019 as the UK was deciding on his extradition to the US. On June 17, Patel approved his transfer to US custody.

 

A British court had initially refused the extradition request on the grounds that Assange may otherwise kill himself, or that heโ€™d be subjected to inhumane treatment in US detention. But Washington successfully appealed the ruling, offering the UK assurances that the Australianโ€™s rights would be observed.

The Salinas High School page led her to discover a link entitled โ€œObtaining Hormones and Anti-Androgens as a Minor: Overviewโ€ on the Transgender Map site.

 

โ€œThe material is unbelievably shocking, and the public deserves to know whatโ€™s going on,โ€ Schenkoske said in an interview with The Epoch Times.

 

The Transgender Map website informs teens on โ€œhow to get hormones as a transgender minor.โ€

 

โ€œEven if you do not think you can start hormones yet, you should think about taking a hormone blocker to make your puberty stop. This is one of the most important things you can do at your age. Try to find a way if you can,โ€ the website states.

 

Schenkoske called the site and its content โ€œincredibly reckless,โ€ she said they a placing kids โ€œin tremendous risk and potential danger.โ€

 

The site suggests that teens unsure about their gender identity may want to consider pausing puberty with hormone blockers. Still, it warns teens they must be sure of their gender because these treatments could cause sterility.

 

โ€œFor young people who are sure they want to make a gender change, getting on hormone blockers and maybe hormones can help a lot. You need to be sure, though,โ€ the website states.

 

The site warns: โ€œHormone blockers will stop your puberty. If you stop taking them, your puberty will start again. Hormones may change your body so you can not make children.โ€

 

Under the heading, โ€œHow to get them,โ€ the site suggests the easiest method for minors to obtain cross-sex hormones is by โ€œcoming outโ€ to a parent or guardian.

 

โ€œYou will have to see a therapist and a doctor for a while before they let you take them,โ€ the site states.

 

โ€œI hope you will get hormones with help from loved ones and healthcare workers. You may have a hard time finding a healthcare worker who will help you without a parent or guardian who says it is OK.โ€

 

But then the site goes beyond proper boundaries. It expands the discussion by saying, โ€œIf you do not think your parent or guardian will help you, there are other ways.โ€

I've been a Liverpool fan since 1974 when I was 5 to 6 years old, my first game was in the 1978 to 1979 season, I have seen an awful lot both as a fan on the terraces and as a steward at Anfield, I really expect nothing less from our fans, it's how we are, it's what we do when times require it, we show our utmost humanity and humility with absolute respect even for rivals.

Israel ambassador elected as vice-president of UN General Assembly

 

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has been elected to the position of the UN General Assembly's vice-president, in a move which is set to grant Tel Aviv more sway over the institution.

 

As one of 21 vice-presidents in the UNGA, Erdan will begin his year-long role in September, when the Assembly gathers for its annual session, enabling him to chair meetings and be involved in the setting of those meetings' agendas.
