Did a lot of research on ayahuasca and DMT, from the Amazon to the Royal Botanical gardens.

Ayahuasca

The original name for the drug was telepathine. It was also called Yage, pronounced Yah-hey.

The Amazonia explorer botanist Richard Spruce was first to describe the preparation of the botanical entheogen. Entheogen is a replacement term for "psychedelic" or "hallucinagen."

36 People Injured After 'Severe Turbulence' on Hawaiian Airlines Flight: 'There Was No Warning'

Thirty-six passengers were injured – including 11 seriously – when a Hawaiian Airlines flight encountered "severe turbulence" Sunday morning.

Authorities met the plane when it landed shortly before 11 a.m. at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and treated the injured passengers, which included a 14-month-old baby, KHON 2 reported. Twenty people were transported to nearby medical facilities, the outlet added.

"Hawaiian Airlines is continuing to support the 17 passengers and three crew members who sustained injuries today after Flight 35 from Phoenix to Honolulu encountered severe turbulence," the airline said via a statement late Sunday about the incident, which occurred about 30 minutes before landing.

The Airbus 330, carrying 278 passengers, eight flight attendants and two pilots was at an altitude of about 36,000 feet when it hit a pocket of unstable air, sending unbuckled passengers and unsecured objects airborne, according to multiple reports.

Emergency responders told KHON 2 that injuries included lacerations, bruising, loss of consciousness and at least one serious head injury.

The cloud of glowing gas is over 100 light-years across, sculpted by stellar winds and radiation from embedded open star cluster NGC 1893. Formed in the interstellar cloud a mere 4 million years ago, bright newly formed cluster stars are seen all around the star-forming nebula. Notable on the lower-right of the featured image are two relatively dense streamers of material trailing away from the nebula's central regions. Rescue operation after Thai navy ship sinks off the coast

The HTMS Sukhothai corvette was on patrol in the Gulf of Thailand, 20 miles from the pier at Bangsaphan district in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, when it struck bad weather.

The winds blew seawater onto the warship and knocked out its electrical system.

The Royal Thai Navy sent three frigates - HTMS Ang Thong HTMS Bhumibol HTMS Kraburi - and two helicopters with mobile pumping machines in an effort to remove the water.

But the strong winds made the mission impossible. As more seawater flowed onto the ship, it started to sink.

In the early hours of Monday (UK time) the navy said 75 sailors had been rescued, with ships and helicopters searching for another 31 people still in the water.

Eleven people are currently being treated in hospital.

The navy published photos of a group of people wearing orange vests sitting in a black inflatable raft, with waves swelling around it in the darkness.

Sukhothai was built in the US and had been in use since 1987.

Williams was born Oct. 3, 1981, and spent most of his childhood in the small town of Boerne, Texas.He initially wanted to be a detective or work for the FBI when he grew up, so he got his bachelor's degree in criminal justice at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.

But after 9/11, Williams started rethinking how he could serve his country. He did some research into Special Forces programs and, in September 2005, joined the Army. Two years later, he became a weapons sergeant — someone who knows U.S. and foreign weaponry well and often goes behind enemy lines to help friendly forces train and recruit.

The German military faced yet another PR disaster on Monday after reports emerged over the weekend that a training exercise involving one of its key weapons, the Puma tank, left not a single one operational.

The conservative opposition was quick to jump on the news as supposed evidence of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's mismanagement of the Bundeswehr, particularly under the control of Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht.

"It's a nightmare," Christian Democrat (CDU) parliamentary group leader Johann Wadephul told the ARD broadcaster. "The Puma is supposed to be a main weapon system of the German army. And if the Puma is not operational, then the army is not operational."

"The criticism from parliament is entirely justified," Lambrecht said in statement released Monday. "Our troops must be able to rely on weapon systems being robust and stable in combat."

Lambrecht said she had commissioned the relevant departments of the military and manufacturers Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall to provide her with an analysis of what has gone wrong by the end of next week. The older Marder tanks will be used in NATO exercises for now, as had already been planned, she said.

The highly complex Pumas, which cost €17 million ($18 million) each, took over a decade to develop. Originally green-lit in 2002, the tank was meant to replace the older Marders, which Germany has been using since the 1970s. But the Puma was plagued with technical issues, including a leaky roof hatch, restricted sight-lines for the driver, and electronics issues. even when completed in 2015, not all the Pumas could be used.

Bullets running out

The new debacle comes on top of several alarming headlines in the German media recently about the state of the country's military. These suggested the Bundeswehr only has enough ammunition for two days of intense fighting — a figure apparently leaked by unnamed sources in defense circles.

If this is true (and such information cannot be confirmed, as it is a state secret), German ammunition supplies are well below the standards expected by NATO, which requires each member to have 30 days' worth of ammunition. To make up that shortfall alone, defense experts say Germany needs to invest another €20 - €30 billion.

Fossil fuels likely not going anywhere, despite fusion 'breakthrough' touted by Biden officials

Fusion technology is promising but years away from usefulness, according to experts, who added that investments in wind, solar, and electric vehicles aren't helping with the climate issue.

A future of nuclear fusion powering the country with limitless, carbon-free energy is promising but remains far out of sight, despite U.S. officials and scientists hailing what they described as a "breakthrough" in fusion technology, according to experts.

"There's a lot of hype and misreporting around this announcement," said Myron Ebell, director of the Center for Energy and Environment at the Competitive Enterprise Institute. "It's more an incremental advance than a breakthrough. Nuclear fusion research is very expensive and requires incredible amounts of energy and technology. This latest technological development is a significant step forward, but we're many decades away from having fusion power for powering our homes."

Federal researchers and Biden administration officials on Tuesday announced they created the first nuclear fusion reaction that generated more energy than was put into it to start the reaction.

"This is one of the most impressive scientific feats in the 21st century," Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said at a press conference in Washington. "America has achieved a tremendous scientific breakthrough."

Granholm added that this "landmark achievement" will "go down in the history books."

Scientists from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a federal research facility, used lasers to combine hydrogen atoms into helium, mimicking the fusion reaction that powers the sun and stars. While this process may hold the key to a clean and potentially limitless energy source without the risk of radioactive waste, researchers had been unable to conduct fusion experiments that generated more energy than they consumed — until this month.

Specifically, the latest fusion experiment conducted last week and unveiled on Tuesday put in 2.05 megajoules of energy and resulted in an output of 3.15 megajoules, meaning there was a net gain of energy from the reaction, officials said.

However, this calculation didn't account for the significant amount of energy needed to power the lasers operating the fusion reactor. In this case, 300 megajoules needed to be drawn from the electrical grid to operate the lasers, according to Lawrence Livermore officials who spoke at the press conference.

In other words, even though the fusion reaction itself produced more energy than it consumed, the reaction couldn't have been conducted in the first place without exponentially more power from what could be called the experiment's wall-socket energy.

"So, there are many, many steps that have to be made in order to get to inertial fusion as an energy source," Mark Herrmann, program director for weapon physics and design at Lawrence Livermore, told reporters.

Still, President Biden has a decadal vision, to get to a commercial fusion reactor within 10 years," Granholm said Tuesday. "This shows that it can be done."

Fusion researchers say the earliest viable fusion reactors could come online would be 2040. Other experts argue fusion is unlikely to play a major role in power production before the 2060s or 2070s.

"There are very significant hurdles, not just in the science, but in technology," Kim Budil, director of Lawrence Livermore, said at Tuesday's event. "A few decades of research on the underlying technologies could put us in a position to build a power plant."

Another issue is price, as tritium, one of the key isotopes for fusion reactions, is among the most expensive substances on earth.

Money could factor in the progress of nuclear fusion in another way, according to Ebell, who explained government scientists are "getting worried" that private researchers might be making faster progress as companies raise large sums of money to work on this issue privately.

"What's the purpose of all this hype from Lawrence Livermore and the Energy Department?" he asked. "They need a lot more money for this research, and showing Congress and the public they're making progress is the way to do that."

Ebell wasn't alone in raising the potential motivation of funding.

"I'm skeptical of surprisingly well-timed announcements by budget-starved laboratories about breakthroughs for technologies decades away," tweeted Javier Blas, energy and commodities columnist for Bloomberg.

Despite the issues of price and timeframe, nuclear fusion research, which dates back to the 1950s, has bipartisan support and is considered by many the "holy grail" of clean energy. Biden administration officials have framed the development of fusion energy as a way to combat climate change.

However, the expected, decades-long delay in nuclear fusion becoming a serviceable source of power means fossil fuels are likely here to stay as wind and solar power and electric vehicles (EVs) — all priorities of the Biden administration as well — have done little to change global energy production patterns despite receiving massive investments.

As fusion makes progress, it could replace wind, solar, and EVs — all three of which, according to Ebell, aren't particularly effective anyway.

"It's a huge waste of money to invest in wind, solar, and electric vehicles," he said. "It's like playing whack-a-mole to stop climate change."

Proponents argue renewable energy is essential to transition away from fossil fuels, which they say aren't sustainable due to their greenhouse emissions and other environmental impacts.

The Biden administration has touted various programs to invest heavily in wind, solar, and EVs. However, the past decade has shown major spending on renewable energy hasn't led to less use of fossil fuels.

"At the end of last year, fossil fuels represented 81% of overall energy consumption. Ten years ago, they were at 82%" Jeffrey Currie, global head of commodities research at Goldman Sachs, said in October. "$3.8 trillion of investment in renewables [during that time] moved fossil fuels from 82% to 81% of the overall energy consumption."

Critics cite another problem with some of these renewable alternatives to fossil fuels: Much of the manufacturing, particularly with solar panels, comes from China.

"We should treat [nuclear fusion] like the hydraulic fracking technology that our private sector has very carefully guarded in recent decades," Victoria Coates, a senior official in the Trump White House, told the John Solomon Reports podcast. "That can be done in a way to keep it out of the hands of the Chinese and not put our energy security at their mercy. This seems to be a real strategic potential leap forward for us and our allies, and it would be great for the world. But it's something we have to guard as a national security issue."

Ebell agreed that nuclear fusion, while expensive, could be a gamechanger, but questions remain.

"You can't predict technological innovation, but fusion has the promise of providing a whole lot more energy for longer periods than the technology we have now," he said. "The question is: How long will it take to overcome the immense technological hurdles, how much it might cost to make it commercially feasible. But this is not going to solve the climate issue. Again, this is many decades away."

The coziness between the FBI and Twitter had been long built in.

On September 16, 2020, =•Stacia Cardille, Twitter's director and associate general counsel== for the company's global policy legal team, wrote a memo to her boss, Jim Baker, Twitter's deputy general counsel.

She summarized a monthly 90-minute meeting she had had with representatives of the FBI, Justice Department, Department of Homeland Security, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence to discuss election threats.

Cardille told Baker the meeting would soon become weekly.

In her memo, she writes: 'I explicitly asked if there were any impediments with the ability of the government to share classified information or other relevant information with industry.

'FBI was adamant that no impediments to information sharing exist.'

She said that 2,300 'high-risk politicians and journalists' had been told to update their privacy settings, ahead of the 2020 election.

And she updated them on work 'to try to get this terrible impersonation account spewing 9/11 conspiracy theories impersonating a DCCC staffer whose dad died in 9/11'.

Cardille continued: 'Flagged a specific Tweet on Illinois use of modems to transmit election results in possible violation of the civic integrity policy (except they do use that tech in limited circumstances).'

In January 2021, the FBI sent Twitter another list of tweets they said were concerning.

Taibbi writes: 'Most tweets contained the same, 'Get out there and vote Wednesday!' trope and had low engagement.

'This is what the FBI spends its time on.'

In March 2021, a FBI representative emailed Cardille to flag 'products' that might be of interest - such as DHS bulletins stressing the need for greater collaboration between law enforcement and 'private sector partners.' …

Taibbi notes that Twitter also received information from state governments, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Election Integrity Project (EIP) at Stanford.

Taibbi concludes: 'The takeaway: what most people think of as the 'deep state' is really a tangled collaboration of state agencies, private contractors, and (sometimes state-funded) NGOs.

'The lines become so blurred as to be meaningless.'

Cardille left Twitter in October 2021, and now works at Google.
