An Arizona judge has ordered Republican Kari Lake to pay $33,000 in legal fees to Democratic Gov.-elect Katie Hobbs after dismissing Lake's bid to overturn the results of the 2022 gubernatorial election.

 

Lake filed a notice of appeal Tuesday after Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson ordered her to compensate expert witnesses that defended election officials against Lake's claims. Hobbs won the election by about 17,000 votes and had sought additional sanctions against her defeated Republican opponent, but the judge rejected her request.

 

"There is no doubt that each side believes firmly in its position with great conviction," Thompson wrote. "The fact that plaintiff [Lake] failed to meet the burden of clear and convincing evidence โ€ฆ does not equate to a finding that her claims were, or were not, groundless and presented in bad faith."

We were cheated out of much of what was Trumps agenda for four years, during which time โ€œtheyโ€ tried to prevent him from being elected, then inaugurated, and spent the rest of his term trying to remove him from office, and even impeached him AFTER his term, ALL on โ€œTrumped-upโ€ charges.

 

We were cheated out of effective people being appointed to key positions, due to approval processes, by people who HATE this country.

 

We were cheated out of several years of the โ€œnormalcyโ€ that we had become accustomed to, due to โ€œCovidโ€, and all of the idiocy that came with it, some of which we are still experiencing.

 

We were cheated out of the 2020 and 2022 elections, with no help from the courts, the legislatures, or the executive branch, at the federal or state levels.

 

The military and law enforcement have failed to step up. It is arguable that they would stand against their own sworn oaths of office, if so ordered. They have become a sham.

 

And the exposure from the Twitter files shows direct involvement of the IC (Intelligence Community - ALL OF THEM) AGAINST We the People and the Constitution.

 

And now, โ€œtheyโ€ are trying to prevent him from running again; the best we can expect is more of the same.

 

We will NOT be able to vote our way out of this mess; nor will we be able to pray our way out; though I caution against giving up either.

 

IMO, there is NO effective โ€œConstitutional remedyโ€; nor is there a means for a โ€œredress of grievancesโ€.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide and still lacks effective therapy. Ivermectin, an antiparasitic drug, has been shown to possess anti-inflammation, anti-virus, and antitumor properties. However, whether ivermectin affects CRC is still unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of ivermectin on CRC using CRC cell lines SW480 and SW1116. We used CCK-8 assay to determine the cell viability, used an optical microscope to measure cell morphology, used Annexin V-FITC/7-AAD kit to determine cell apoptosis, used Caspase 3/7 Activity Apoptosis Assay Kit to evaluate Caspase 3/7 activity, used Western blot to determine apoptosis-associated protein expression, and used flow cytometry and fluorescence microscope to determine the reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and cell cycle. The results demonstrated that ivermectin dose-dependently inhibited colorectal cancer SW480 and SW1116 cell growth, followed by promoting cell apoptosis and increasing Caspase-3/7 activity. Besides, ivermectin upregulated the expression of proapoptotic proteins Bax and cleaved PARP and downregulated antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2. Mechanism analysis showed that ivermectin promoted both total and mitochondrial ROS production in a dose-dependent manner, which could be eliminated by administering N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) in CRC cells. Following NAC treatment, the inhibition of cell growth induced by ivermectin was reversed. Finally, ivermectin at low doses (2.5 and 5ย ยตM) induced CRC cell arrest. Overall, ivermectin suppressed cell proliferation by promoting ROS-mediated mitochondrial apoptosis pathway and inducing S phase arrest in CRC cells, suggesting that ivermectin might be a new potential anticancer drug therapy for human colorectal cancer and other cancers.

Introduction

 

Colorectal cancer (CRC) refers to malignant tumors in the ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum and is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide. Among all malignant tumors globally, CRC ranks third in incidence and second in mortality (Siegel et al., 2020). CRC has caused a heavy economic burden on the country and individuals (Maida et al., 2017). At present, the treatment of CRC mainly adopts a comprehensive treatment based on surgery, combined with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and other treatments (Modest et al., 2019). However, due to the complicated mechanism of the occurrence, development, and metastasis of CRC, there is still a lack of specific drugs for CRC treatment.

 

Ivermectin is a derivative of the 16-membered macrolide compound abamectin, which was first widely used in clinical practice as an antiparasitic drug (Laing et al., 2017). Ivermectin can increase the activity of ฮณ-aminobutyric acid receptor or glutamate-chloride ion channel (Glu-Cl), increase the influx of chloride ions, and cause the cell membrane hyperpolarization, thereby blocking signal transmission between neurons and muscles (Martin et al., 2021), which exerts its antiparasitic effects. Ivermectin could be used, in addition to as an antiparasitic drug, as antiviral agents such as Flavivirus, HIV-1 virus, and SARS-CoV-2 virus (Mastrangelo et al., 2012; Wagstaff et al., 2012; Caly et al., 2020). Moreover, studies have shown that ivermectin has an inhibitory effect on various tumor cells and may be a potential broad-spectrum antitumor drug (Juarez et al., 2020). Juarez et al. (2020) have demonstrated that ivermectin is the most sensitive to breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-468, MCF-7, and ovarian SKOV-3; whereas ivermectin is the most nonsensitive to the prostate cancer cell line DU145. The induction of cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 mediates this effect of ivermectin on these sensitive cancer cells. Furthermore, ivermectin can inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells through p21-activated kinase 1 (PAK1)-induced autophagy, Caspase-dependent apoptosis, or immunogenic cell death regulate the signal pathways, including Hippo, Akt/mTOR, and WNT-TCF pathways to inhibit cancer cell proliferation (Liu et al., 2020). As known, ROS plays a vital role in the apoptosis caused by oxidative stress. ROS is a by-product of normal mitochondrial respiration. Stimuli such as infection, drought, cold, and ultraviolet light result in increased ROS in cells. Then, accumulative ROS could induce cells mitochondrial dysfunction and promote apoptosis in cells (Sinha et al., 2013). Evidence has shown that ivermectin-induced apoptosis is closely related to the production of ROS. Currently, there are few reports on the research of ivermectin in colorectal cancer.

 

Furthermore, new use of old drugs (that is, drug relocation) is a strategy for expanding old drugs and developing new uses, which has the advantages of low research and development cost and short development time (Pushpakom et al., 2019). Research on drug relocation of ivermectin is a shortcut to developing new antitumor drugs. Given this, we designed a study to explore the impact of ivermectin on the proliferation and apoptosis of CRC cells and the underlying mechanism.

A Ukrainian lawmaker has posted a photo of a sad-looking, dirt-covered boy, claiming that he is an eight-year-old named Mark, who โ€œjust survivedโ€ a Russian artillery strike. However, the claim didnโ€™t hold water, since the same image had been used on a book cover in 2013, as people swiftly pointed out.

 

The false claim came from Lesia Vasilenko, a Ukrainian MP from the relatively small Golos (Voice) Party, who has a background in law and human rights campaigning. She shared the photo and the purported story of โ€œMarc, 8 yoโ€ with her 330,000 followers on her English-language Twitter feed on Tuesday.

 

The photo is nowhere close to being new and does not appear to have any relation to Ukraine. The 2013 Spanish-language edition of the book โ€œThe Misremembered Manโ€ by Irish novelist Christina McKenna featured the very same picture on the cover, skeptics pointed out. At the time of the writing, the tweet remained on the platform, though Twitter added a notice about its questionable veracity.

Utah junior high staff member arrested

SOUTH SALT LAKE โ€” A staff member at a South Salt Lake junior high school has been arrested and accused of sexually abusing a teenage student.

 

Kimberly Jeniffer Cruz-Romero, 29, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Tuesday for investigation of two counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, rape of a child and forcible sodomy.

 

An officer with the Granite School District Police Department was investigating a report of unlawful sexual activity with a child at Granite Park Junior High, 3031 S. 200 East, when he learned about a 14-year-old boy who was allegedly engaging in sexual activity with Cruz-Romero, according to a police booking affidavit.

 

Police say the woman is an attendance tracker at the school.

 

"It was reported by the victim (that) he and Kimberly Cruz-Romero had sexual intercourse on several occasions," including at a hotel in Salt Lake City, in the woman's office at the school and in her car on several occasions prior to the boy turning 14, the affidavit alleges.

 

Police say they have recovered pictures and video evidence of the crimes.

 

The boy also told police that he was "threatened by gang members of the gang Kimberly is a member of for wanting to end the relationship with Kimberly," as stated in the affidavit.

 

"It was reported Kimberly became pregnant with the victim's child. I located a text message that supports that allegation from Kimberly's registered phone number to the victim's phone," the officer also wrote in the arrest report. "When Kimberly was being taken into custody, she informed me she had recently had surgery for a miscarriage. The procedure is believed to have taken place about a week ago in Mexico."

 

Police have requested that Cruz-Romero be held without bail pending the filing of formal criminal charges.

 

The Granite School District released a prepared statement on Wednesday regarding the "disturbing" allegations.

 

"We are still gathering information on this matter, but Romero has been terminated as a result of these charges. Romero has only been employed with the district and Granite Park since the start of this current school year. Student safety is our primary concern, and we take these charges very seriously. There is currently no indication from Granite police that any other students were involved," the district said.

 

Cruz-Romero was as part-time employee with the school, according to the district.

Lavrov Says Pentagon Threatening To Assassinate Putin

 

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday lashed out at what he described as threats coming out of the US to assassinate President Vladimir Putin, apparently in response to a slew of anonymously sourced reports.

 

"There are some 'anonymous officials' from the Pentagon who have actually enunciated threats to deliver a 'decapitating strike' on the Kremlin, which is in fact an assassination threat against the Russian president," Lavrov said, according to TASS.

 

"If someone really has such ideas, then this someone should think long and hard about the possible consequences of such plans," the top Russian diplomat warned.

 

The condemnation also came less than a week after Senator Lindsey Graham called for someone to "take out" the Russian president for the war in Ukraine to end.

 

But it appears Lavrov specifically had in mind a September report published in Newsweek which relied on anonymous US defense officials describing that the Biden administration was mulling plans for a "decapitation strike to kill Putin in the heart of the Kremlin."

The military sources tell Newsweek that there are subtle moves being made with regard to nuclear threats, including moving submarines and aircraft and drilling B-52 bombers. Occasionally tripping over a homeless immigrant who had unwisely sent his immigration pay home to his family in Central America would merely be a nuisance to the people. It could be dealt with by printing more money and issuing it out to the new residents.

Two years into the new government, there has yet to be a renaming of the country. This new country was taken by war. Won by a new type of warfare that no one has seen before. The battlefield was artificially constructed like a game. Only the aggressor knew it wasnโ€™t a game. The defenders put up little resistance. Those few who did are still incarcerated, waiting for trials. Their once-strong countrymen are unable to extract them from their precarious situation as it is rapidly being dismantled by the new ruling Junta. There are a few left that still appreciates the rule of law left over as legacy laws from the previous political situation. The mapmakers are having a fit. They wait in anticipation. Waiting to rename the new country, which will certainly be the best-selling map edition. It will be expressed to all the schools with all haste as our children would otherwise remain ignorant as to the name of their new Fatherland. Gone without a fight, the land of the free and the home of the brave remains, reformed into a modern technocracy. This brave new world we enter has yet to form completely. No 'dedicated funding': Air Force scraps spy planes used to fight border drug war

 

No current plan exists to replace the RC-26 aircraft despite the Air Force speeding up the program's dismantling, as reported by CNN.

 

Even though the spy planes are relied on heavily to monitor fentanyl smuggling across the U.S./Mexico border, National Guard pilots are being told to scrap the aircraft earlier than expected. Originally reported to face an April 2023 retirement for the planes, pilots received new orders in November 2022 to ditch them before the end of the year.

 

Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) who is also a pilot in the Air National Guard, told CNN that he has been fighting to have the program replaced or extended.

 

โ€œLaw enforcement lives have been saved by having this asset available,โ€ Kinzinger told the outlet. โ€œWe can see anything weird thatโ€™s going to happen,โ€ he added.

 

Rep. Kinzinger, whose profile was elevated drastically after being one of two Republicans in favor of the January 6 committee, says he met with Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall but was essentially told there was no way the program would continue.

 

Kinzinger claims that the secretary made it clear "that DoD business is not, in essence, domestic drug issues even though DoD is one of the primary people responsible."

 

Air Force officials have countered the narrative by stating their drones will fill the void of any manned planes. Using the drones โ€œleaves no capability gap," an official told CNN.

 

โ€œGiven there is no Air Force specific RC-26B validated requirements nor dedicated funding to support sustainment of the weapons system,โ€ Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek told CNN, โ€œthe Air Force is moving forward with the retirement of the aircraft.โ€

 

In November 2022, the planes were used in three separate fentanyl busts, totaling approximately 22,500 pills each, according to data provided by CNN.

 

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, fiscal year 2022 saw nearly 15,000 pounds of fentanyl seized at the southern border, the fifth-highest seizure rate of any one drug, with methamphetamine and khat tied for the highest at 175,000 pounds.

 

However, if fiscal year 2023 numbers continue on their average, fentanyl seizures will more than double their 2022 totals.

 

Rep. Kinzinger wrote for the Air Force Times in 2019 criticizing the eventual decision, stating that it "undermines Trump's border security priorities."

Zelensky Says Ukraine Ready to Join WEF Meeting in Davos as It Seeks Postwar Funding

 

When the global elites of business, finance, banking, and big government convene in Davos next month at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting, Ukraine will be amongst them.

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Wednesday his government will be at the meeting in Switzerland, revealing he also spoke again with BlackRock Inc CEO Larry Fink about financing the postwar rebuilding effort.

 

โ€œSpecialists of this company are already helping Ukraine to structure the fund for the reconstruction of our state,โ€ Zelensky, who had a video call with Fink in September, said in his evening address to the nation, according to Bloomberg.

 

He didnโ€™t say whether he would attend the January 16-20 WEF in person or participate virtually, although in the past he has been a regular attendee at the elite gathering.

 

Bloomberg reports Zelensky also said he spoke to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and raised the prospect of Italy contributing to the strengthening of Ukraineโ€™s air defences.

 

Zelensky made an appearance via video at the last meeting back in May when he compared his country to Israel in conversation with WEF boss Klaus Schwab.

 

The Ukrainian leader told the Davos organiser that, whatever happens in the present conflict, โ€œwith a neighbour like thisโ€ โ€” namely Russia โ€” โ€œanything can happen anytime, and the war may repeat itself,โ€ as Breitbart News reported.

 

Zelensky said that, over the longer term, the Ukrainian government would have to โ€œcreate such conditions that people and businesses would not be afraid to exist in this country, to thrive in this country.โ€

 

He then asked the gathering to consider the โ€œexample of Israelโ€, which finds itself in a similarly hostile environment โ€” but has managed to establish itself as a relatively prosperous economy with a thriving tech industry despite existing in a near-constant state of low-level conflict, or worse.

 

Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the WEF had earlier greeted members with the salute: โ€œthe future is built by usโ€ฆ by a powerful communityโ€ฆ as you here in this room.โ€

 

โ€œHistory at a Turning Point: Government and Business Strategiesโ€ was the theme for the 2022 edition of the 51-year-old NGO lobbying organization founded by the German engineer and economist.

 

The WEF annual meeting for 2023 will take place in Davos, Klosters from 16-20 January.

 

The theme of the meeting is โ€œCooperation in a Fragmented Worldโ€ and some 2,500 people are expected to fly in from around the world to talk as they discuss the future of the planet.

International sex trafficker Jagpal Singh starred in a BBC reality show in which โ€œreal peopleโ€ were invited to give โ€œreal opinionsโ€ on the news of the day.

Last month, however, he was imprisoned alongside Chinese national Donglin Zhang, 49, Albanian national Vlassis Ntaoulias, 33, and Thai national Boonsong Wannas, 63, for trafficking women to Scotland and forcing them into prostitution.

 

In an article titled โ€˜The sex traffickers hiding in plain sightโ€™, BBC Scotland social affairs correspondent Chris Clements recalled that, in addition to providing hot takes on U.S. President Donald Trumpโ€™s border wall and The Emoji Movie, the predator was invited to opine on the relationship between the sexes.

 

โ€œMen like sexโ€, Singh said. โ€œIโ€™m not saying women donโ€™t like sex. I think men like sex better. Women are always tired.โ€

โ€œIt is predominantly labour exploitation, or exploitation for forced criminalityโ€ฆ followed by sexual exploitation,โ€ that victims are drawn into, said Police Scotlandโ€™s National Human Trafficking Unit leader, Detective Superintendent Fil Capaldi.

 

โ€œSome are hiding in plain sight,โ€ he said of the exploiters.

 

โ€œThere are a number of cases weโ€™ve had recently where members of the public have seen comings and goings at a strange hour, or seen a steady stream of men going to a particular door, and theyโ€™ve called that in.โ€

 

He explained that there is โ€œa real international dimensionโ€ to the crimes, referencing collaborations with law enforcement in Continental European countries including Albania, Romania, and Hungary.

Israel helps Ukraine whitewash its Nazis

 

Representatives of Ukraineโ€™s neo-Nazi Azov Battalion have been touring Israel to drum up support for the unitโ€™s imprisoned fighters. They have been meeting with Israeli politicians and soldiers.

 

Azov intelligence officer Illia Samoilenko was released in a prisoner exchange with Russia in September.

 

He had been one of the hundreds of Azov fighters who surrendered in May at the end of the long Russian siege of the eastern city of Mariupol.

 

โ€œIsrael values freedom, values strength, Israel values honor. Itโ€™s the same things that we also value,โ€ he told Israeli newspaper Haaretz this week.

 

Samoilenko also told The Times of Israel that โ€œhe sees Israel and Ukraine on the same side, the civilized battling the uncivilized in a struggle for the future of humanity,โ€ the outlet summarized.

 

โ€œWe have prosperity, beautiful, prosperous, beautiful civilization, and they have medieval cavemen,โ€ he said. It seems the โ€œtheyโ€ in this case are the Palestinians and the Russians, who Samoilenko regards as โ€œuncivilized.โ€

 

Along for the Israeli tour with Samoilenko is Yulia Fedosiuk, the wife of an imprisoned Azov fighter and a far-right activist in her own right.

 

Both were on a charm offensive this week, as part of a wider push to whitewash Azovโ€™s image in the West.

 

Documented ties to Nazism

 

During the meeting with Lazimi, Samoilenko โ€œdebunked the myths created by Russian propaganda about the Azov regiment,โ€ the Azovstal association claimed on its Telegram channel.

 

This seems to be a reference to the Russian governmentโ€™s accurate claim since the start of its invasion of Ukraine in February that the Azov Battalion is a Nazi organization.

 

But recall that this wasnโ€™t only a claim from Russia, it was widely acknowledged and reported in Western media, including by the EU-funded โ€œinvestigativeโ€ website Bellingcat.

 

In 2019, Bellingcat extensively documented the battalionโ€™s international outreach to white supremacist groups, noting that โ€œAzovโ€™s interest in reaching American extremists and the Ukrainian groupโ€™s comfort in cooperating with neo-Nazis in the US and West was on displayโ€ until at least 2018 โ€“ four years after the Azov battalion was integrated into Ukraineโ€™s national guard.

 

But as the US, UK and EU wage their proxy war against Russia in Ukraine, Western media have largely fallen in line, portraying Azov sympathetically as the โ€œdefenders of Mariupol,โ€ as misunderstood nationalists and as the victims of โ€œPutinโ€™s propaganda.โ€

 

Even the Anti-Defamation League, which previously condemned Azovโ€™s Nazi ties, is falling into line.

 

After the Russian invasion, the ADL engaged in blatant Holocaust revisionism in order to whitewash Hitlerโ€™s wartime collaborators who are today venerated as national heroes in Ukraine even though they helped the German leader murder hundreds of thousands of Poles and Jews during World War II.

 

The ADL is now also helping to airbrush Azov. Recently, the Israel lobby group claimed that the Azov Battalionโ€™s 2014 integration into Ukraineโ€™s national guard meant that the Azov military unit had split from the broader far-right Azov political movement and from the movementโ€™s founder Andriy Biletsky.

 

As a consequence, the ADL now says that it โ€œdoes not see Azov Regiment as the far-right group it once was.โ€

Mirotvorets publishes a constantly updated list of people considered by the hidden authors of the website to be the โ€œenemies of Ukraine,โ€who have said or done things that constitute โ€œsigns of crimes against the national security of Ukraine, peace, human security, and the international law.โ€ Some individuals listed have ended up dead, and when this happens, the word ะ›ะ˜ะšะ’ะ˜ะ”ะ˜ะ ะžะ’ะะ (โ€œliquidatedโ€ or โ€œeliminatedโ€) is stamped across their entry on the site in big, red letters, along with an โ€˜Xโ€™.

 

Sometimes people end up on the Mirotvorets hit list for basic administrative reasons. In September 2018, hundreds of residents of the Zakarpatye region, including government officials, who took Hungarian citizenship were added. This led to condemnations from Budapest, and denials from Kiev that it was involved in the website.

 

The next month, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto angrily fired back that โ€œit is a lie that the Ukrainian state has nothing to do with the website,โ€ and claimed the countryโ€™s then-President Petro Poroshenko โ€œgave his consent to the hate campaign in an attempt to increase his popularity.โ€

 

As well as average citizens, many Western figures with a high profile have ended up on Mirotvorets. This includes American journalists Chris Hedges and Glenn Greenwald, anti-war politicians Tulsi Gabbard and Rand Paul, British musician Roger Waters, and many others, such as โ€œwarmongerโ€ Henry Kissinger. His โ€œcrimeโ€ was to worry in public that Kievโ€™s anti-Russian actions threatened retaliation from Moscow.

 

Despite the European Union, G7, United Nations and multiple rights groups calling for Mirotvorets to be closed, it has remained open. Ukrainian officials have also used the website to vet entrants into the country at border checkpoints since its launch, on top of existing government databases of undesirable elements.

 

While the website is managed in secret, evidence has emerged that it is closely tied to Kievโ€™s powerful intelligence agency, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), and its domain is hosted in Langley, Virginia, US, not far from the headquarters of the CIA. Which raises the question: is โ€œgive in charge rashistโ€an attempt by these same dark actors to take Mirotvorets global?

World Economic Forum cancels Twitter, directs followers to Chinese social media apps

Prior to its upcoming conference in Davos next month, the World Economic Forum (WEF) appears to have joined the cancel campaign against Twitter, taking to recommending Chinese state-controlled social media apps to โ€œfollow alongโ€ with Davos Man into the future.

 

Twitter is noticeably absent from the entities listed on the organizationโ€™s โ€œHow to follow Davos 2023โ€ social media pamphlet, and that appears to be no accident.

 

To stay up to speed with all that is happening within the invite-only doors of the ruling class confab, the WEF recommends following along through a handful of social media sites. They include the U.S.-based narrative-compliant Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube, along with the Chinese social media apps TikTok WeChat, and Weibo. Twitter, which has freed itself from the grasp of the WEF-endorsed censorship-compliant social apps, is no longer included.

 

Through its founder Klaus Schwab and partner organizations, the WEF has a very cozy relationship with the Chinese government. Davos recently revealed that their China office now has 40 full time staffers. Moreover, every year in Beijing, the WEF hosts its โ€œAnnual Meeting of the New Champions,โ€ which facilitates partnerships between international businesses and the Chinese Community Party. In 2018, the CCP awarded Klaus Schwab with its China Reform Friendship Medal, a medal for non-Chinese people who do the CCPโ€™s bidding overseas.

 

Davos 2023 will feature Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, on stage. First reported by The Dossier, he will appear at an event titled โ€œTackling Harm in The Digital Era.โ€

 

In case you missed it, The Dossier has obtained an early, partial list of both events and confirmed speakers for Davos 2023. On the agenda for the 2023 conference includes event titles such as Why We Need Battery Passports, Leading The Charge Through Earthโ€™s New Normal, A Living Wage For All, Enabling An Equitable Transition, and Beyond The Rainbow: Advancing LGBTQ Rights, among others.

 

The Bird App has faced a ferocious cancel campaign following its change of management. Iโ€™m wondering if there was another planned release of some sort of virus.. spouse and I never get sick but within the past few weeks, many, many people we know (all healthy like us and usually donโ€™t fall ill) caught something. Itโ€™s comes on out of nowhere and the common theme is a really high fever (103) that develops in the period of an hour . ..and yes, I know past illnesses do this too but imvho the whole thing seems very odd. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt is helping to fund the salaries of dozens of Biden officials

 

Some of these officials have been placed with the goal of focusing on AI and clean energy โ€” two areas where Schmidt has investments.

 

Eric Schmidt, a former Google CEO who has also advised the United States (US) Congress and the White House, has helped to pay the salaries of more than 24 Biden administration officials via donations from his research and investment firm, Schmidt Futures, to the nonprofit research and advocacy organization, the Federation of American Scientists (FAS).

 

Schmidt Futures and other organizations help to pay the salaries of these officials by providing funding to a โ€œTalent Hubโ€ which is part of a FAS โ€œDay One Project.โ€ This Day One Project runs a FAS โ€œImpact Fellowshipโ€ program that places โ€œImpact Fellowsโ€ in influential government posts.

 

Not only has Schmidt Futures contributed to FAS but Schmidt has considerable ties to top FAS leadership and one of the Impact Fellows who was placed in a federal government role was also listed as an adviser to Schmidt Futures.

 

Additionally, some of the Impact Fellows are placed in federal departments to focus on areas such as clean energy and artificial intelligence (AI) โ€” fields that Schmidt and the ventures he supports have significant investments in.

 

For example, FASโ€™s 2021 Annual Report states that some Impact Fellows were โ€œdeployed at or being recruited to enterโ€ the Department of Energy โ€œto support the Undersecretary for Scienceโ€™s office in driving critical market-based efforts to spur a clean energy revolutionโ€ and US Citizenship and Immigration Services โ€œto focus on the intersection of immigration policy & artificial intelligence in advancing the nationโ€™s national security and economic growth.โ€

 

Schmidt and the ventures he supports have investments in the clean energy companies WattBuy (an energy marketplace) and Amprius (a high-energy battery company) and the AI company Rebellion Defense (which builds mission-focused AI for national defense and security).

 

And some of these Schmidt-backed companies have ties to the federal government departments where Impact Fellows have been placed. For example, WattBuy has partnered with the Department of Energyโ€™s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Amprius has received a funding grant from the Department of Energy.

 

The Tech Transparency Project (TTP), a nonprofit watchdog organization, reported that Schmidt is โ€œa primary benefactorโ€ of this FAS initiative โ€œthat has placed at least 24 fellows in influential government posts, many of which align with Eric Schmidtโ€™s private financial interests.โ€

 

According to TTP, two of the fellows placed in the federal government โ€œexplicitly identify themselves as Schmidt fellows.โ€

 

One Impact Fellow at the Department of Education, John Whitmer, is listed as a โ€œSchmidt Impact Fellowโ€ and an adviser to Schmidt Futures in his speaker bio at the annual Arizona State University and Global Silicon Valley summit.

 

Another Impact Fellow, Jonathan Lipman, was listed as being deployed to the General Services Administration on March 23 but this listing was removed by March 29. At the same time, Lipman was also working as an Associated Product Manager at Schmidt Futures.

Geoengineering: Startup Company Says Itโ€™s Already Begun Releasing Particles Into Atmosphere

 

A startup claims it has launched weather balloons that may have released reflective sulfur particles in the stratosphere, potentially crossing a controversial barrier in the field of solar geoengineering.

 

Geoengineering refers to deliberate efforts to manipulate the climate by reflecting more sunlight back into space, mimicking a natural process that occurs in the aftermath of large volcanic eruptions. In theory, spraying sulfur and similar particles in sufficient quantities could potentially ease global warming.

 

Itโ€™s not technically difficult to release such compounds into the stratosphere. But scientists have mostly (though not entirely) refrained from carrying out even small-scale outdoor experiments. And itโ€™s not clear that any have yet injected materials into that specific layer of the atmosphere in the context of geoengineering-related research.

 

Thatโ€™s in part because itโ€™s highly controversial. Little is known about the real-world effect of such deliberate interventions at large scales, but they could have dangerous side effects. The impacts could also be worse in some regions than others, which could provoke geopolitical conflicts.

 

Some researchers who have long studied the technology are deeply troubled that the company, Make Sunsets, appears to have moved forward with launches from a site in Mexico without any public engagement or scientific scrutiny. Itโ€™s already attempting to sell โ€œcooling creditsโ€ for future balloon flights that could carry larger payloads.

 

Several researchers MIT Technology Review spoke with condemned the effort to commercialize geoengineering at this early stage. Some potential investors and customers who have reviewed the companyโ€™s proposals say that itโ€™s not a serious scientific effort or a credible business but more of an attention grab designed to stir up controversy in the field.

 

Luke Iseman, the cofounder and CEO of Make Sunsets, acknowledges that the effort is part entrepreneurial and part provocation, an act of geoengineering activism.

 

He hopes that by moving ahead in the controversial space, the startup will help drive the public debate and push forward a scientific field that has faced great difficulty carrying out small-scale field experiments amid criticism.

Ukrainian MP fakes โ€˜victimโ€™ of Russian strike

A Ukrainian lawmaker has posted a photo of a sad-looking, dirt-covered boy, claiming that he is an eight-year-old named Mark, who โ€œjust survivedโ€ a Russian artillery strike. However, the claim didnโ€™t hold water, since the same image had been used on a book cover in 2013, as people swiftly pointed out.

 

The false claim came from Lesia Vasilenko, a Ukrainian MP from the relatively small Golos (Voice) Party, who has a background in law and human rights campaigning. She sharedthe photo and the purported story of โ€œMarc, 8 yoโ€ with her 330,000 followers on her English-language Twitter feed on Tuesday.

 

The photo is nowhere close to being new and does not appear to have any relation to Ukraine. The 2013 Spanish-language edition of the book 'The Misremembered Man' by Irish novelist Christina McKenna featured the very same picture on the cover, skeptics pointed out. At the time of the writing, the tweet remained on the platform, though Twitter added a notice about its questionable veracity.

 

The Ukrainian MP, who states that she studied at University College London, is regularly invited by leading Western media, such as Franceโ€™s BFM TV or the BBC, to comment on Ukrainian affairs.

 

The latest UN casualty report for Ukraine on Tuesday said that its mission had recorded 429 deaths of children since hostilities with Russia started in late February. A watchdog operating in Russiaโ€™s Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics reported earlier this month that 154 minors had been killed by strikes it attributed to Ukrainian troops during roughly the same timeframe. The UN considers Donbass as part of Ukraine and counts civilian deaths taking place there as Ukrainian.

 

Between 2014, when Kiev deployed troops against the rebellious republics in Donbass, in the wake of an armed coup in the Ukrainian capital, and the beginning of Russiaโ€™s operation this year, some 150 children were killed in the region, according to UN estimates.

Another Ukrainian terrorist attack foiled โ€“ Moscow

 

Two Russian nationals were killed in the southern part of the country while resisting arrest, the state security service says

 

Russiaโ€™s Federal Security Service (FSB) has prevented a Ukrainian terrorist attack in the south of the country. The two people involved were neutralized by law enforcement officers and were allegedly planning to go to Ukraine to fight against Russian forces, the FSB has claimed.

 

In a statement on Tuesday, the security service described the perpetrators as Russian nationals with prior criminal records and who were part of a terrorist group. On the instructions of the Ukrainian special services, they were โ€œpreparing a terrorist act in the town of Chegem of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic,โ€ located in the North Caucasus near the Georgian border.

 

โ€œAfter committing the crime, they planned to leave for Ukraine to participate in hostilities against Russian Armed Forces,โ€ the FSB added.

 

The two terrorists were killed on Monday in the neighboring city of Nalchik as they attempted to fire back at security officers. The FSB said it had found and seized explosives, an assault rifle, and a handgun with ammunition at the scene. Footage released by the agency showing the weaponry appears to corroborate this claim.

 

In recent months amid the Ukraine conflict, Russiaโ€™s security services have foiled several attempts to carry out sabotage and terrorist attacks on behalf of Kiev. On Monday, the FSB intercepted a group of Ukrainian saboteurs as they tried to cross into Russian territory, four of whom were killed in a firefight.

 

Last month, the security agency also prevented a Ukrainian bomb attack at a market in Russiaโ€™s Zaporozhye Region, as well as a plot targeting a gas pipeline connecting Russia and Tรผrkiye.

 

While Kiev has never claimed responsibility for these incidents, Russia insists that Ukraine is behind the attacks and has accused President Vladimir Zelensky of resorting to terrorist tactics.

Ukrainian โ€˜saboteursโ€™ killed on border with Russia โ€“ Moscow

 

Agents engaged the group in a firefight while they were trying to enter Bryansk Region, Russiaโ€™s Security Service (FSB) claims

 

Several Ukrainian saboteurs were intercepted on Sunday while trying to enter Russia, according to the FSB security service. Four members of the group were killed in a firefight, the agency said.

 

The FSB claimed the saboteurs were armed with submachine guns produced by the German firm SIG Sauer, and carried โ€œcommunication and navigation equipment and means for conducting acts of sabotage and terrorism.โ€ The group also had in its possession four improvised explosive devices with a combined yield equivalent to 40 kg of TNT, the statement added.

 

The agency released graphic footage, purportedly from the scene of the firefight. It showed several, apparently lifeless, bodies in winter camouflage, with weapons lying on or next to them. At least some of the fighters were armed with carbines rather than SMGs, according to the video.

 

The Bryansk Region is one of several in Russia operating under a โ€˜yellowโ€™ terrorist threat alert, the second-highest on Russiaโ€™s three-level color scale, due to its proximity to Ukraine.

 

Since November, eight federal subjects of Russia, including the Bryansk Region, have been living under special law enforcement conditions, which grant their leaders additional authority. For example, they can restrict access to the provinces or order evacuation from places that they deem unsafe.

Number of Ukrainian refugees in Poland revealed

 

950,000 people are registered as such, with the total number of Ukrainian nationals in the country exceeding two million, a senior official has said

 

Nearly a million Ukrainian refugees are now residing in Poland, Bartosz Marczuk, vice president of the Polish Development Fund, revealed on Tuesday. He estimated Warsaw has spent at least $8 billion to support Ukraine in 2022.

 

In a series of tweets, Marczuk offered a detailed look into the refugee situation in Poland in light of the Ukraine conflict. According to his data, โ€œthere are 950,000 refugees in Poland now, which is over 400,000 below the summer peak.โ€

 

Marczuk stated that Poland has also become home to another 1.2-1.3 million people from Ukraine who had moved there before the hostilities broke out in late February.

 

The total number of Ukrainians in Poland amounts to about 2.3 million, he added.

 

Meanwhile, the official continued, 90% of the refugees are women and children, making up 2.5% of the population of the country.

 

While in Poland, Ukrainian refugees receive social benefits, including education allowances. Meanwhile, 65% of school-age children are enrolled in local institutions, while 50% of preschoolers are attending kindergartens, he noted, suggesting that some students may be taking online classes. The Polish authorities spend some 200 million Polish Zloty ($45 million) per month on these efforts, he said.

 

However, Warsaw has to bear other expenses as well. โ€œIn 2022, Poland made serious efforts to help Ukraine,โ€ he said, adding that it had allocated 35-40 billion zloty ($7.9-9 billion) for supporting Ukraine. The sum includes security assistance, private aid, allowances from the budget, local governments, and NGOs.

 

However, he pointed to a โ€œvery high employment rateโ€ among refugees of working age, with about 320,000 people having a job. In the near future, this will enable billions of zloty to be generated for the budget from taxes and contributions from refugeesโ€™ salaries alone, Marczuk claimed.

 

In October, Poland proposed tightening the rules and depriving Ukrainians of financial assistance if they leave the country for more than a month. The government has also announced that starting next year,refugees living in state accommodation centers for longer than 120 days will have to start paying for their housing and food.

'Natural Right to the Land of Israel': Netanyahu Lays Out Far-reaching West Bank Settlement Plans

 

The vague agreement says that incoming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will advance a framework to annex the West Bank, taking into consideration national and international interests

 

Benjamin Netanyahu's incoming government's coalition agreement begins with a declaration that the Jewish people have a โ€œnatural rightโ€ to the Land of Israel. Regarding annexation of the West Bank, the agreement remains vague but says the prime minister will advance policies within whose framework the West Bank will be annexed, taking into consideration timing and both international and national interests.

 

Referring to the court appeal now underway concerning the evacuation of the Homesh outpost, the agreement says that in light of the appeal, the Disengagement Law will be amended to regularize the activities being conducted at the site (in practice, a yeshiva) and that the government will notify the High Court of Justice to that effect.

 

The agreement says that within 60 days a decision will be made pertaining to outposts established before February 2011 โ€“ including ensuring they have proper infrastructure, water, electricity, and public facilities. In addition, within six months, the cabinet will make a decision on illegal neighborhoods inside existing settlements.

 

The agreement also calls for changing the way in which building permits for settlements are approved. Today, each stage of the planning process requires prior approval by the defense minister โ€“ a step that can cause delays in construction due to domestic or international political considerations. The accord calls for a cabinet decision on changing the planning and approval process according to a proposal to be agreed upon between Netanyahu and Bezalel Smotrich. However, it doesnโ€™t provide further details.

 

The goal behind this clause is to reduce interference by politicians in the process, including the defense minister and prime minister. According to a source involved in the wording of the agreement, the goal is to require approvals only at the start and end of the planning process, rather than at each stage in order to accelerate construction plans in the territories.

 

Another clause concerns the transfer of control of services provided to settlers from the Civil Administration to government ministries. Though vaguely worded, it says that the government will act to โ€œoptimize servicesโ€ in the West Bank in coordination and with the consent of the prime minister, but the source involved in the talks said that it means transfer of control.

 

The cabinet is also obligated under the agreement to take measures against Palestinian construction in the West Bankโ€™s Area C, which is referred to as "thwarting the effort at taking illegal control" of land that is being carried out with the help of international entities.

 

The agreement also states that the relevant ministries will act to ensure implementation of the Evyatar framework, under which the previous government committed itself to allowing an outpost to be established there if planning rules permit.

Non-sanctioned Russians unlikely to recover assets in EU โ€“ central bank

The Russian regulator says it has no confidence Western institutions will safeguard investorsโ€™ rights to use their unblocked funds

 

Permits issued by the international clearing systems Euroclear and Clearstream to unblock some assets of Russiaโ€™s National Settlement Depository (NSD) do not guarantee that Russian investors will be able to recover them, the countryโ€™s central bank said in a statement on Wednesday.

 

Last week, the Belgian and Luxembourg finance ministries authorized the release of โ€œcertain frozen funds and economic resourcesโ€ that belong to non-sanctioned Russian investors, by granting a general license to the NSD. A number of banks had their funds blocked in the NSD due to EU sanctions imposed against the depository earlier this year.

 

โ€œShort deadlines, vague wording in permits and the complexity of the unblocking procedure do not give confidence that Western regulators are ready to ensure the right of Russian investors to dispose of their property,โ€ the regulator said, and advised investors to wait for notifications from their brokers or custodians on the results of the unblocking process.

 

Euroclear and Clearstream ceased transactions with NSD's accounts on February 28 and blocked them on June 3, following the inclusion of the depository on the Ukraine-related EU sanctions list.

 

In September, the Russian depository applied to the Belgian and Luxembourg finance ministries for general licenses, seeking to unlock the assets. On Tuesday, the Bank of Russia assessed chances of Western countries returning Russian assets as โ€œextremely lowโ€ despite the fact that they havenโ€™t been legally confiscated.

Fauci Argued Benefits of Gain-of-Function Research Outweighed Pandemic Risk in 2012 Paper

 

In a newly resurfaced paper from 2012, Dr. Anthony Fauci argued that the benefits of gain-of-function research are worth the increased risk of a potential pandemic-causing lab accident.

 

The Weekend Australian unearthed a paper Fauci wrote for the American Society for Microbiology in October 2012 in which he argued in support of gain-of-function research. Such research involves making viruses more infectious and/or deadly. Experts have raised the possibility that the COVID-19 pandemic could have originated from a potential lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan, China, where gain-of-function experiments on bat coronaviruses have been conducted.

 

Despite the risks involved, Fauci called gain-of-function experiments โ€œimportant workโ€ in his 2012 writing:

 

In an unlikely but conceivable turn of events, what if that scientist becomes infected with the virus, which leads to an outbreak and ultimately triggers a pandemic? Many ask reasonable questions: given the possibility of such a scenario โ€“ however remote โ€“ should the initial experiments have been performed and/or published in the first place, and what were the processes involved in this decision?

 

Scientists working in this field might say โ€“ as indeed I have said โ€“ that the benefits of such experiments and the resulting knowledge outweigh the risks. It is more likely that a pandemic would occur in nature, and the need to stay ahead of such a threat is a primary reason for performing an experiment that might appear to be risky.

 

Within the research community, many have expressed concern that important research progress could come to a halt just because of the fear that someone, somewhere, might attempt to replicate these experiments sloppily. This is a valid concern.

The Weekend Australian report adds that Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, did not alert senior White House officials before lifting a ban on gain-of-function research in 2017.

 

In 2014, the Obama administration paused funding for gain-of-function experiments in 22 fields, including those involving SARS, influenza and MERS because of the increased risk such experimentation carries of causing a pandemic. In 2012, when Fauci authored the paper supporting gain-of-function research, there was a voluntary ban on such experiments related to highly infectious influenza viruses.

 

Yet the EcoHealth Alliance diverted $600,000 in grants from the NIH to the WIV in the form of sub-grants from 2014 through 2019, for the purpose of studying bat coronaviruses.

MERDARE, Kosovo, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Kosovo closed its biggest border crossing with Serbia on Wednesday after protesters blocked it on the Serbian side to support their ethnic kin in Kosovo in refusing to recognise the country's independence.

 

Tensions between Belgrade and Pristina have been running high since last month when representatives of ethnic Serbs in the north of Kosovo left state institutions including the police and judiciary over the Kosovo government's decision to replace Serbian issued car licence plates.
