1,000+ killed, infrastructure and historic sites damaged: What is known about horrific quakes in Türkiye and Syria

Powerful tremors continue to hit both countries, compounding the death and devastation

On Monday morning, a powerful earthquake struck in southern Türkiye, causing significant destruction across the country and in neighboring Syria. Over a thousand people were reported killed, as buildings collapsed and infrastructure was damaged on both sides of the border.

Here is what is known about the disaster so far.

Worst in decades

The quake was detected at 4:17am (0117 GMT), according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). It was centered in the Pazarcik district in the southern province of Kahramanmaras at a depth of 7 kilometers.

The agency initially measured the quake at 7.4 magnitude, but later revised it to 7.7. Dozens of aftershocks were detected later in the day in southern Türkiye, the Gulf of Alexandria and Syria, according to quake monitors, with the strongest spike reported at 7.5 magnitude.

The earthquake was felt across the region, with tremors noted by people as far as Baghdad, Iraq, and Beirut, Lebanon, hundreds of kilometers away.

Hundreds killed, thousands injured

Türkiye is located in a seismically active part of the world, but Monday’s quake was one of the strongest in its history, with more than 1,000 people killed, according to Turkish authorities.

President Recept Tayyip Erdogan said the disaster left over 5,000 injured and destroyed some 2,800 buildings. He called it the worst earthquake in the country since 1939.

The wave of destruction swept through 10 Turkish provinces, including Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay, and Kilis.

In Syria, the health ministry said it recorded over 300 deaths and over 1,000 injured people, with damage reported in Northern Aleppo, Hama, Latakia, and Tartus.

Crucial infrastructure damaged

In both Türkiye and Syria, the quake caused damage to key infrastructure. In the Turkish Kilis Province, natural gas pipelines ruptured, with the fuel bursting into large plumes of flame, according to footage circulating online. Operator BOTAS said it cut the flow, but pressurized gas in the pipeline continued to feed the fires.

In Syria, a refinery in the city of Baniyas, one of the largest in the country, had to be shut down for at least 48 hours due to cracks in the chimney of its power unit, the Ministry of Oil and Mineral Resources reported.

The Syrian government also ordered all trains to be stopped as a precaution following the earthquake.

Turkish authorities closed the Hatay Airport due to the damage it sustained and suspended all civilian flights via the Gaziantep International Airport amid the emergency. The ports of Ceyhan and Iskenderun were reportedly closed too.

National heritage at risk

The Gaziantep Castle, a hilltop fort located in the center of the city of Gaziantep was heavily damaged by the quake, according to Turkish media. The structure dates to the second and third centuries, though it was repeatedly renovated over the course of history, and is considered the symbol of the city.

In Syria, the quake reportedly caused a crack to appear in the Citadel of Aleppo, a UNESCO heritage site located in Aleppo’s old city. Houmam Saad, who heads the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums in the Culture Ministry, told media that a team had been dispatched to assess the scale of the damage.

International assistance

Many nations, including Azerbaijan, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Russia, Serbia, Spain, the UK and the US, have offered their assistance in responding to the disaster.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent messages of condolence to Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar Assad and said his government was ready to help.

Russian Emergencies Ministry said it put two transport planes and some 100 highly-skilled rescue workers on alert for possible deployment to the disaster area.

An official said a 7.5-magnitude event in the Kahramanmaras province was “not an aftershock” but a separate earthquake

Türkiye was hit by another powerful earthquake on Monday afternoon. This comes on the heels of a devastating quake in the early hours of the morning that claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people, according to local authorities.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported two more jolts with an interval of about ten minutes that sent shockwaves through the central part of the country at around 1:30pm local time. The first registered a magnitude of 7.5 and had an epicenter about 65km to northeast of the city of Kahramanmaras. This is the same region that was hard hit by the initial earthquake early this morning.

The second, with a magnitude of 5.8, had an epicenter 55km northwest of the city of Adiyaman in southeastern Türkiye.

An official from Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority clarified that the 7.5 earthquake was “not an aftershock” but a separate quake.

The nation is already reeling from the first morning quake, which claimed the lives of over 1,100 people while injuring more than 7,000.

Footage posted on social media shows the devastation wrought by the disaster. In one clip, a building in the Sanliurfa province is seen collapsing hours after the first earthquake. It was unclear whether anyone was inside the building at the time.

Neighboring Syria, which was also struck, has also been seeing aftershocks. Speaking to the SANA news agency, Raed Ahmad, the director of the National Earthquake Center, said that jolts have occurred and more will occur, but subsequent ones will be much weaker than the initial earthquake that killed over 400 people in the country.

Dmitry Vasilyev, a professor at Astrakhan State University, said his nine-year excavation near the Caspian Sea has finally unearthed the foundations of a triangular fortress of flamed brick, along with modest yurt-shaped dwellings, and he believes these are part of what was once Itil, the Khazar capital.

By law Khazars could use flamed bricks only in the capital, Vasilyev said. The general location of the city on the Silk Road was confirmed in medieval chronicles by Arab, Jewish and European authors.

"The discovery of the capital of Eastern Europe's first feudal state is of great significance," he told The Associated Press. "We should view it as part of Russian history."

Kevin Brook, the American author of "The Jews of Khazaria," e-mailed Wednesday that he has followed the Itil dig over the years, and even though it has yielded no Jewish artifacts, "Now I'm as confident as the archaeological team is that they've truly found the long-lost city."

Ruling nomadic tribe

The Khazars were a Turkic tribe that roamed the steppes from Northern China to the Black Sea. Between the 7th and 10th centuries they conquered huge swaths of what is now southern Russia and Ukraine, the Caucasus Mountains and Central Asia as far as the Aral Sea.

Itil, about 800 miles south of Moscow, had a population of up to 60,000 and occupied 0.8 square miles of marshy plains southwest of the Russian Caspian Sea port of Astrakhan, Vasilyev said.

It lay at a major junction of the Silk Road, the trade route between Europe and China, which "helped Khazars amass giant profits," he said.

The Khazar empire was once a regional superpower, and Vasilyev said his team has found "luxurious collections" of well-preserved ceramics that help identify cultural ties of the Khazar state with Europe, the Byzantine Empire and even Northern Africa. They also found armor, wooden kitchenware, glass lamps and cups, jewelry and vessels for transporting precious balms dating back to the eighth and ninth centuries, he said.

'We know almost nothing'

But a scholar in Israel, while calling the excavations interesting, said the challenge was to find Khazar inscriptions.

"If they found a few buildings, or remains of buildings, that's interesting but does not make a big difference," said Dr. Simon Kraiz, an expert on Eastern European Jewry at Haifa University. "If they found Khazar writings, that would be very important."

Vasilyev says no Jewish artifacts have been found at the site, and in general, most of what is known about the Khazars comes from chroniclers from other, sometimes competing cultures and empires.

"We know a lot about them, and yet we know almost nothing: Jews wrote about them, and so did Russians, Georgians, and Armenians, to name a few," said Kraiz. "But from the Khazars themselves we have nearly nothing."

'Russia is a successor'

The Khazars' ruling dynasty and nobility converted to Judaism sometime in the 8th or 9th centuries. Vasilyev said the limited number of Jewish religious artifacts such as mezuzas and Stars of David found at other Khazar sites prove that ordinary Khazars preferred traditional beliefs such as shamanism, or newly introduced religions including Islam.

Yevgeny Satanovsky, director of the Middle Eastern Institute in Moscow, said he believes the Khazar elite chose Judaism out of political expediency — to remain independent of neighboring Muslim and Christian states. "They embraced Judaism because they wanted to remain neutral, like Switzerland these days," he said.

In particular, he said, the Khazars opposed the Arab advance into the Caucasus Mountains and were instrumental in containing a Muslim push toward eastern Europe. He compared their role in eastern Europe to that of the French knights who defeated Arab forces at the Battle of Tours in France in 732.

The Khazars succeeded in holding off the Arabs, but a young, expanding Russian state vanquished the Khazar empire in the late 10th century. Medieval Russian epic poems mention Russian warriors fighting the "Jewish Giant."

"In many ways, Russia is a successor of the Khazar state," Vasilyev said.

Traces of conquest

He said his dig revealed traces of a large fire that was probably caused by the Russian conquest. He said Itil was rebuilt following the fall of the Khazar empire, when ethnic Khazars were slowly assimilated by Turkic-speaking tribes, Tatars and Mongols, who inhabited the city until it was flooded by the rising Caspian Sea around the 14th century.

The study of the Khazar empire was discouraged in the Soviet Union. The dictator Josef Stalin, in particular, detested the idea that a Jewish empire had come before Russia's own. He ordered references to Khazar history removed from textbooks because they "disproved his theory of Russian statehood," Satanovsky said.

Only now are Russian scholars free to explore Khazar culture. The Itil excavations have been sponsored by the Russian-Jewish Congress, a nonprofit organization that supports cultural projects in Russia.

"Khazar studies are just beginning," Satanovsky said.

First, I invite everyone who has been talking about the idea that the Thai royal family will simply nullify the agreement they signed with Pfizer to read what I've written in July 2021, after discovering THE ONLY PFIZER MANUFACTURING AND SUPPLY AGREEMENT that we can discuss in certainly as authentic, which is the Brazilian one (as part of my #PfizerLeak revelations on twitter, a day after I shared the Albanian contact).

If you want to understand the Pfizer negotiation process that led to the signing of the manufacturing and supply agreement by Thailand, read my post entitled “The Negotiations”. The highlights from Carlos Murillo's testimony are truly pivotal!

The important point is: Thailand cannot risk nullifying the contract because they put as collateral against this contract ALL OF THE COUNTRY ASSETS, including currency reserves and embassies!

If Thailand will want to dispute the contract, the need to go to an arbitration process, govern by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) arbitration process. Each side will nominate an arbitrator, and the ICC court will nominate the chair, who will make the decision.

The problem is that since a court case against Pfizer/BioNTech regarding their product will take place in NY, it will be govern by the PREP act, conducted in an where willful misconduct requires a proof or 3 things (below). While we have evidence on #3, how exactly will anyone clearly prove #1 & #2?

Practically, the ONLY WAY anyone can nullify the contracts is if they can prove that BioNTech who developed the "vaccine" knowingly planned to kill people. Why do you think the creators of this deadly shot got involved in writing a book about it? They were trying to frame their narrative.

HOWEVER!!!

In my honest opinion, countries MIGHT have ONE get-out-of-jail-ticket from these draconian contracts, as the executive branch (government) signed a SECRET commitment that the contract cannot and will not be overruled by legislative & judiciary branches. But… it’s not going to be that easy. After all, will claims of unconstitutional contract work in this court? I cannot tell. Also, as the chair decides, it's a high risk.

Sunday Talks, Cohn and Brennan Talk Gleefully About the Return of the Service Driven Economy Under Biden, Happy with No Wage Growth

This is one of those interviews whereyou don’t have to take my word for what is being said, Gary Cohn and Margaret Brennan are gleeful about the January jobs reportand the overall return of the U.S. economy to a service driven system with low wages.

Seriously, this is them celebrating out loud.

In order to calm the Wall Street apoplexy about his election victory, President Trump selected Gary Cohn to be an economic advisor early in the administration. However, it was also no surprise that President Trump did not follow Cohn’s advice, and quickly dispatched him after Cohn protested. In this interview the worldview of Cohn is typically globalist, multinational and Wall St centric.

Talking about the January jobs report, Cohn literally gets everything wrong from the position of Main Street USA. Cohn also celebrates what he calls the “renormalization of the new economy.” Continuing with his thought process Cohn states, “A lot of the jobs that we saw were jobs in the service industry, the service, the industries coming back very strong because we’re starting to see the economy go back to what we historically think of the economy,” he said. This is exactly how Wall Street, and the multinationals look at the U.S. economy.

The next part that both Cohn and Margaret Brennan celebrate is even more sunlight. “The interesting thing about last month’s unemployment numbers is we brought people back to work, but we did not have to entice them with pay,” Cohn stated. “So, the monthly, the month over month number in wage gains was 30 basis points. The prior month was 40 basis points. So, we’re seeing we’re getting people back into the labor force for a lower wage than we were prior to this,” he said. With higher prices (inflation) crushing the middle-class and service workers, the multinationals Cohn represents are celebrating that they don’t have to pay workers higher wages WATCH:

AUTH/3591/12/21 - A complaint on behalf of UsForThem v Pfizer

Case Summary

A complaint on behalf of UsForThem, a parent-led campaign group calling for children’s needs to be prioritised during the Covid pandemic response, was received about an article and video posted on the BBC news website.

The item at issue, entitled ‘Pfizer boss: Annual Covid jabs for years to come’ consisted of an interview conducted by a BBC medical editor with Pfizer’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and appeared in the ‘Health’ section of the BBC website on 2 December 2021.

COMPLAINT

The complainant stated that the tone, content and means of dissemination of this article and the associated video were extremely promotional in nature. The complainant strongly believed that it was not appropriate for Pfizer to promote its product in this way. The complainant referred to three earlier cases against Pfizer for promoting its Covid-19 vaccine illegitimately online (Cases AUTH/3422/11/20, AUTH/3438/12/20 and AUTH/3437/12/20). In these cases the Panel decided that Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine regulatory status was that of a temporary approval for emergency use only and stated that the vaccine was not a licensed medicine, and that Pfizer was guilty of promoting an unlicensed medicine in breach of the Code. The complainant was not aware that the UK regulatory status of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine had changed since these cases and therefore alleged Pfizer was, with the material at issue, once again in breach of the Code. Furthermore, in view of the fact that Pfizer had had several findings of a similar nature in the past 6 months, the complainant alleged that Pfizer was also in breach of the Code for failing to comply with its undertaking.

1 ‘Immunising that age group [children under the age of 11] in the UK and Europe would be a very good idea.’

The complainant alleged that by recommending vaccinating healthy British children under the age of 11 against Covid-19, the Pfizer CEO was making a claim for the clinical efficacy and safety of Pfizer’s product and its risk/benefit balance, even though the vaccine had not yet been included in the emergency use temporary approval for use in children this young in the UK.

2 ‘Covid in schools was thriving’. ‘This was disturbing significantly the educational system and there were kids that would have severe symptoms.’

The complainant stated that severe Covid-19 was rare amongst children and school age in the UK and while the virus did circulate in schools, schools had typically reflected community transmission throughout the pandemic. Neither had Covid-19 itself had a significant impact on disturbing children’s education in the UK. The ‘disturbance’ to the UK educational system had resulted from political decisions made by governments, not the virus. Indeed, the complainant knew that the UK had the second highest rates of school closures in Europe, except for Italy – a result of political decisions.

The complainant stated that there was simply no evidence that healthy school children in the UK were at significant risk from the SARS COV-2 virus and to imply that they were was disgracefully misleading.

3 ‘So, there was no doubt in my mind that the benefits completely were in favour of doing it.’

The complainant alleged that this was probably the most egregiously false and misleading of the Pfizer’s CEO’s statements. It completely neglected to consider that there were potential risks to healthy children associated with administration of the Covid-19 vaccine. The complainant referred to a number of documents including a Pfizer leaflet listing side-effects; Latest government advice regarding myocarditis to healthcare workers detailing rates of myocarditis in hospitalised children; and Latest adverse events reported for Pfizer.

The complainant stated that the conclusion of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation earlier in 2021 when asked to give an opinion on this very subject in relation to the older cohort of children between 12 and 15 hardly seemed to be consistent with the opinion of Pfizer’s CEO that there was ‘no doubt’ or that ‘the benefits completely were in favour’. The complainant alleged that the failure to promote the rational use of the medicine, the misleading presentation of the risk/benefit profile and the use of exaggerated, all-embracing claims (‘no doubt’ and ‘completely in favour’) was in breach of the Code.

The complainant stated whether Pfizer, or indeed the BBC, liked it or not, opinion about the benefits and risks of vaccinating healthy children against an infection which posed little risk to them, and the ethical considerations of exposing healthy children to the risks of vaccination (no matter how rare those effects might be) in order to protect adults or vulnerable members of society, was not settled. For a pharmaceutical company to be behaving on a public platform as if it was, was wrong. The complainant alleged that the material was in breach of the Code in that ‘emerging clinical and scientific opinions which had not been resolved in favour of one generally accepted viewpoint must be referred to in a balanced manner’.

The complainant understood that Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine fell within the clause of the Code relating to temporary authorisation for sale or supply without a marketing authorisation. The complainant stated such was the poor quality of this activity and the materials which were the subject of this complaint in terms of their lack of compliance with the Code that the complainant found it difficult to believe that Pfizer had undergone the required prior scrutiny and approval by the MHRA on behalf of the ministers as set out in Clause 11.3 of the Code.

The complainant alleged a breach of the Code as no information, whatsoever, was provided about reporting of side-effects, or indeed the side-effects themselves.

The complainant had no way of knowing whether the interview was or was not solicited by Pfizer. Similarly, the complainant had no way of knowing whether Pfizer’s CEO was formulating his answers based on briefing notes prepared by the Pfizer communications department or, indeed, whether the journalist prepared his written article with the aid of written briefing notes or press releases provided by Pfizer. This information would no doubt inform and guide judgements about this case.

In summary, the complainant alleged that the article, and associated video constituted promotion by Pfizer of its unlicensed medicine which fell within the scope of the Code. The complainant further alleged that Pfizer had failed to maintain high standards and brought discredit upon the industry. Furthermore, bearing in mind that Pfizer was found guilty of illegitimately promoting its Covid-19 vaccine using the internet less than six months ago, a breach of undertaking was alleged.

PANEL RULING

The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that it had been approached by the BBC for an interview with its CEO which was held on 22 November 2021. The news article and associated video interview, referred to by the complainant, were produced and published by the BBC on 2 December 2021. The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that the 45-minute interview was intended to cover news topics identified by the BBC about Pfizer’s commitment to the global Covid-19 vaccine rollout and ongoing innovation to fight the pandemic.

The Panel noted that complaints about third party articles in the press etc were judged upon the acceptability of the information provided to that third party by the pharmaceutical company, such as any press release, unedited interview etc rather than the final published article. The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that it had no editorial control or right to review the excerpts of the interview chosen by the BBC for inclusion in their news articles and no Pfizer press briefing was issued to the BBC in association with the interview. The Panel also noted Pfizer’s submission that it had not been able to obtain a full transcript of the interview from the BBC as the BBC’s own policies did not allow this; it had, however, obtained some limited expanded excerpts from the interview. The Panel noted that it was obliged to make its rulings based on what Pfizer’s CEO had actually stated rather than the edited published article and video. The Panel noted, therefore, that in relation to the quotations cited by the complainant, these could only be considered within the context of the overall interview based on the limited BBC transcript provided by Pfizer as part of its response.

The Panel did not have the full unedited transcript of the interview or the video. Whilst the complainant referred to the published video, it appeared that the substantive allegations related to the published article.

The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that prior to the interview, Pfizer UK had briefed the CEO who was based in the USA about the interview, the regulatory status of Covid-19 vaccines in the UK and the requirements of the ABPI Code.

The Panel noted the comments that had been included in the article which were attributable to Pfizer’s CEO within the context of the limited interview excerpt provided by Pfizer particularly ‘Immunising that age group [children under the age of 11] in the UK and Europe would be a very good idea’ and ‘So, there is no doubt in my mind that the benefits, completely, are in favour of doing it [vaccinating children against Covid-19]’ and considered that the strong unqualified nature of the comments were such that they promoted Covid-19 vaccines including the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine.

The Panel noted, that at the time the CEO’s comments were made, and subsequently published, the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine did not have a temporary supply authorisation, it was the subject of a conditional marketing authorisation. In the Panel’s view, the medicine therefore had not been promoted prior to the grant of its marketing authorisation and no breach of the Code was ruled.

In relation to the alleged breach of undertaking, the Panel noted that the current case (Case AUTH/3591/12/21) concerned excerpts from an interview with Pfizer’s CEO which were subsequently published in an article by the BBC and referred to Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine which had a conditional marketing authorisation at the time. In the Panel’s view, the current case, Case AUTH/3591/12/21, was sufficiently different to the previous cases which involved promotion prior to the grant of the market authorisation as a result of individual employee’s personal use of social media which did not follow company policy such that there had been no breach of the undertakings given in Cases AUTH/3422/11/20, AUTH/3437/12/20 and AUTH/3438/12/20 as alleged. The Panel therefore ruled no breach of the Code.

In relation to the quotation ‘Immunising that age group [children under the age of 11] in the UK and Europe would be a very good idea’ the Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that at the time the article at issue, including excerpts from the Pfizer CEO’s interview, was published, the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine was approved for use in individuals 12 years and older; no Covid-19 vaccines were approved by the MHRA for use in children under the age of 12 years.

Whilst the Panel noted that the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine was not licensed for use in under 12 year olds at the time the CEO’s comments were made, and subsequently published within the BBC article, it did have a conditional marketing authorisation for use in those aged 12 and over. The Panel did not consider, therefore, that the clause which required that a medicine must not be promoted prior to the grant of its marketing authorisation which permits its sale or supply was relevant and no breach of the Code was ruled in relation to the quotation in question.

The Panel noted, however, that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was not approved by the MHRA for use in children aged 5 to 11 years until 22 December 2021. At the time the CEO’s comments were made and subsequently published within the BBC article, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was not approved for use in children aged 5-11 years. In the Panel’s view, the statements attributable to the Pfizer CEO promoted the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in this age group and a breach of the Code was ruled. This ruling was appealed by Pfizer.

The Panel noted that with regard to the quotations ‘Covid in schools was thriving’ and ‘This was disturbing significantly the educational system and there were kids which would have severe symptoms’, Pfizer provided a BBC transcript of this part of the interview. The quotations in question were slightly different in the transcript: ‘I think that Covid in schools was thriving’ and ‘I believe that this is disturbing, significantly the educational system’. They appeared as part of a response to a question about whether immunising 5 to 11 year olds was likely to happen in the UK and Europe. The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that the evidence showed rising levels of Covid-19 infection seen in UK school age children in autumn 2021 potentially representing a pool of infection and risk of transmission to peers, staff and families. An opinion piece published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) December 2021 highlighted the key issues. Further, in the UK, the pandemic had resulted in two significant periods of school closures causing notable disturbance to the education system. The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that numerous reports documented the detrimental impact of the disruption on children’s wellbeing and learning. This included The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (OFQUAL) review published in July 2021, which stated that the nature of learning loss varied depending on the phase of education. Primary leaders were most likely to report significant learning loss, with the youngest pupils apparently most negatively affected by the pandemic. The Panel further noted Pfizer’s submission that whilst data concerning long Covid-19 were limited in young children, there was documented evidence of the occurrence of long Covid-19 in children aged 11 to 17 years; the BMJ reported that one in seven children in the UK might still have symptoms 15 weeks after infection. The Panel did not consider that the complainant had established that the cited quotations were misleading or incapable of substantiation on the basis that there was no evidence that healthy school children in the UK were at risk from the SARS COV-2 virus as alleged. Based on the very narrow allegation, no breaches of the Code were ruled.

With regard to the allegations about the statement ‘So, there is no doubt in my mind that the benefits completely are in favour of doing it [vaccinating children against Covid-19]’ the Panel noted that a transcript of this part of the interview was provided to Pfizer by the BBC. The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that it showed that its CEO was asked a specific question about vaccinating 5 to 11-year-old children against SARS-CoV-2 infection. The interviewer asked ‘In October the FDA, the American regulator approved your vaccine for 5-to 11-year-olds after successful trials. Do you think immunising that age group is likely to happen in the UK and Europe? And if so, why is it a good idea?’. The CEO responded ‘I think it will happen. I don't want to speak about specific candidates I don't want to speak about for the health authorities or the regulatory authorities of UK. It’s up to them to approve it and use it or not. I believe it's a very good idea. I think that COVID in schools is thriving. I believe that this is disturbing, significantly, the educational system. I think is becoming the pool of infection for the adults. It is becoming a pool of infection for a pool of where the virus keeps replicating and that creates variants. At the end of the day, although the symptoms are not very severe, there is the long COVID. That is very worrisome. And there are kids that will have severe symptoms. So there is no doubt in my mind about the benefits completely are in favour of doing it’.

The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that the CEO made it clear that the decision on whether to authorize the vaccines in the 5 to 11 year age group was the responsibility of the MHRA and he was not speaking on its behalf. He also explained that he was answering the question in the context of Covid-19 vaccination in general rather than specifically the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Pfizer’s CEO then went onto express his opinion that the wider benefits of vaccinating the 5 to 11 year age group were in favour of vaccination. The Panel noted from the transcript that there was a clear inference that a risk/benefit analysis would be undertaken by the regulator. Whilst the Panel noted the CEO’s statement that he/she ‘did not want to speak for the health authorities or the regulatory authorities of UK, it was up to them to approve it and use it or not’, the Panel considered that the CEO’s opinion statements, including ‘So there is no doubt in my mind about the benefits completely are in favour of doing it’ might infer to the ultimate audience, including members of the public, that the benefits outweighed the risks when the regulatory authorities had not yet made any conclusions in relation to the vaccination of 5 to 11 year olds; the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine was not licensed in the UK in that age group when the article at issue was published and the Panel therefore ruled breaches of the Code. These rulings were appealed by Pfizer.

The Panel noted that, at the relevant time, the Pfizer/BioTech vaccine had a conditional marketing authorisation. The clause of the Code which applied to medicines with a temporary supply authorisation, was therefore not applicable and no breach was ruled.

The Panel did not consider that the complainant had established that the interview with the CEO, excerpts of which were subsequently included in the BBC article, was a campaign approved by health ministers and thereby required a reference to reporting of side-effects. No breach of the Code was ruled.

The Panel did not consider that the complainant had established that the interview in question was intended for patients taking the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine and therefore the requirements of the Code which related to material related to a medicine intended for patients taking that medicine were not relevant. No breach of the Code was ruled.

The Panel noted its comments and ruling above and considered that Pfizer had failed to maintain high standards and a breach of the Code was ruled. This ruling was appealed by Pfizer.

The Panel noted its comments and rulings above, including that the statements made by the Pfizer CEO did not encourage the rational use of the medicine, and considered that the briefing document by Pfizer UK did not sufficiently brief the CEO on how to address questions on children aged 5 to 11, despite this being described as a hot topic; the briefing was limited to stating that there were no current plans to authorise the vaccine for ages 5 to 11 and that Pfizer would submit data on the 5 to 11 population to the UK regulator in the coming weeks. Further, whilst the briefing instructed the CEO not to promote nor state messages which could appear to encourage individuals to specifically ask their doctors for a prescription based on the information provided, it provided key messages, contradictory to this instruction such as ‘I encourage anyone who is on the fence about receiving a vaccine to think again and to look at the science’ and ‘This is a decision that will not only affect your life but those you spend the most time with including your family and loved ones’. The Panel noted its comments and rulings above and considered that Pfizer had brought discredit upon, and reduced confidence in, the industry in this regard and a breach of Clause 2 was ruled. This ruling was appealed by Pfizer.

Pfizer considered the briefing document to be confidential and initially did not want it to be shared with the complainant. The briefing document was not provided to the complainant when notified of the outcome of the Panel’s consideration of the case as it was not considered relevant to enable him/her to decide whether or not to appeal the Panel’s rulings of no breach of the Code. Upon Pfizer’s appeal the issue of confidentiality of the enclosure which Pfizer re-submitted as part of its appeal was reviewed. A redacted version of the briefing document was settled by the Director as set out in Paragraph 7.5 of the PMCPA Constitution and Procedure. The terms of its disclosure to the complainant, however, could not be settled with the parties. The Chair of the Appeal Board was asked to decide how to proceed and decided that relevant sections, quoted directly from the Enclosure, were to be included in one document titled ‘Relevant extracts from Enclosure 22, a briefing document from Pfizer for an interview with the BBC on November 22, 2021.’ and that this was shared with the complainant, Pfizer and the Appeal Board.

The appeal from Pfizer and the complainant’s detailed comments upon it are given below.

APPEAL BOARD RULING

The Appeal Board noted Pfizer’s submission that the 45-minute interview was intended to cover news topics identified by the BBC about Pfizer’s commitment to the global Covid-19 vaccine rollout and ongoing innovation to fight the pandemic. Pfizer’s objective for the interview was to reiterate its continued commitment to delivering equitable access to its COVID-19 vaccine across low- and middle-income countries which was a topic of particular media interest at the time. Pfizer submitted that it had reasonably considered that the topic of childhood vaccination would not be a specific focus of the interview. At the appeal Pfizer stated that its CEO who was based in the USA had been given the briefing document and verbally briefed by an experienced media relations team and senior staff. Pfizer UK had briefed the CEO about the regulatory status of Covid-19 vaccines in the UK and the requirements of the ABPI Code. In response to a question at the appeal, Pfizer acknowledged that perhaps additional wording could have been added to the briefing to help the CEO navigate the more complicated areas.

The Appeal Board noted Pfizer’s submission that it had no editorial control or right to review the excerpts of the interview chosen by the BBC for inclusion in its news articles and no press briefing was issued to the BBC in association with the interview. The Appeal Board also noted Pfizer’s submission that it had not been able to obtain a full transcript of the interview from the BBC as the BBC’s own policies did not allow this; it had, however, obtained some limited expanded excerpts. Pfizer stated at the appeal that whilst the topic of vaccination in children appeared to be a focus in the online article, it formed only a small part of the complete 45 minute interview. The Appeal Board agreed with the Panel that it was obliged to make its rulings based on what Pfizer’s CEO had actually stated rather than the edited published article and video. The Appeal Board noted that whilst it did not have the full unedited transcript of the interview, it had before it two questions and answers in relation to vaccination in children. One was not included within the online article and was not the subject of the complaint. The other was:

Pfizer CEO: ‘I think it will happen. I don't want to speak about specific candidates I don't want to speak [about] for the health authorities or the regulatory authorities of UK. It's up to them to approve it and use it or not. I believe it's a very good idea. I think that COVID in schools is thriving. I believe that this is disturbing, significantly, the educational system. I think is becoming the pool of infection for the adults. It is becoming a pool of infection for a pool of where the virus keeps replicating and that creates variants. At the end of the day, although the symptoms are not very severe, there is the long COVID. That is very worrisome. And there are kids that will have severe symptoms. So there is no doubt in my mind about the benefits completely [completely] are in favour of doing it.’

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was not approved by the MHRA for use in children aged 5 to 11 years until 22 December 2021, after this interview.

The Appeal Board noted Pfizer’s submission that its CEO was asked a specific question about vaccinating 5 to 11-year-old children against SARS-CoV-2 infection. At the appeal Pfizer submitted that it was not unreasonable to talk about the principles of vaccination in this age group in general and that at the time, there were two other vaccine candidates being investigated in children under 12.

The Appeal Board considered the comments by Pfizer’s CEO particularly ‘Immunising that age group [children under the age of 11] in the UK and Europe would be a very good idea’ and ‘So, there is no doubt in my mind that the benefits, completely [completely], are in favour of doing it [vaccinating children against Covid-19]’. The Appeal Board determined that the strong unqualified nature of the comments were such that they promoted the use of Covid-19 vaccines in the 5-11 age group in general, but in the context of the whole answer the Appeal Board considered that those comments did not promote the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine in isolation.

The relevant clause which stated that the promotion of a medicine must be in accordance with the terms of its marketing authorisation and must not be inconsistent with the particulars listed in its summary of product characteristics (SPC) had not been raised in relation to the allegation that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine had been promoted for use in 5 to 11 year olds for which it was not approved at the time of the interview and so the Panel had considered the matter under the clause relating to maintaining high standards. The Appeal Board, noting its comments above, did not consider that Pfizer’s CEO had specifically promoted Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine for use in the 5-11 age group and no breach of the Code was ruled in this regard. The appeal on this point was successful.

The appeal on this point was unsuccessful.

The Appeal Board, however, did not consider the claim failed to ‘encourage the rational use’ of a particular medicine and it therefore ruled no breach of the Code. The appeal on this point was successful.

Whilst the Appeal Board noted the CEO’s statement that he/she ‘did not want to speak for the health authorities or the regulatory authorities of UK, it was up to them to approve it and use it or not’, the Appeal Board considered that the CEO’s opinion statements, including ‘So there is no doubt in my mind about the benefits completely are in favour of doing it’ might infer to the ultimate audience, including members of the public, that the benefits outweighed the risks when the UK regulatory authorities had not yet made any conclusions in relation to the vaccination of 5 to 11 year olds; no Covid-19 vaccine was licensed in the UK in that age group when the article at issue was published and the Appeal Board therefore upheld the Panel’s rulings of breaches of the Code. The appeal on this point was unsuccessful.

The Appeal Board noting the unique circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic and its comments above including that Pfizer UK had briefed the CEO about the regulatory status of Covid-19 vaccines in the UK and the requirements of the ABPI Code, considered that in the particular circumstances of this case its concerns were covered by its rulings above, and further rulings of breaches of the Code in relation to high standards and Clause 2 were not warranted. The Appeal Board ruled no breach including of Clause 2. The appeal on these points was successful.

A district judge vindicated Texas cardiologist and outspoken COVID vaccine critic Dr. Peter McCullough on Wednesday, dismissing a lawsuit filed against him approximately two years ago by his former employer Baylor Scott and White Health system.

McCullough, dubbed a prominent purveyor of COVID misinformation by his detractors, was sued by the health system two years ago for allegedly violating a separation agreement and bringing the Baylor Scott and White Health name into the media. Associate Judge Tahira Khan Merritt of the Judicial District Court Dallas County dismissed the suit with prejudice.

“This is a strong victory for freedom of speech and fair balanced publication and media presentation of clinical data as it has emerged over the course of the pandemic crisis,” McCullough told The Daily Wire. “My analyses and conclusions have been accurate, consistent, and have always been my own, not those of any institution.”

Baylor accused McCullough in the $1 million lawsuit of “reputational harm,” stating that McCullough gave several media interviews and was published in journals that mentioned Baylor as an affiliate even though he had parted ways with the employer.

Baylor Scott & White Health told The Dallas Morning News in a written statement at the time of the filings that McCullough’s views don’t represent those of the health care provider.

“The lawsuit was filed to enforce this separation and avoid public confusion,” the statement said. “We take very seriously our responsibility to be a trusted source of medical information in the communities we serve.”

Yet, representatives for the cardiologist asserted McCullough never stated he was employed by the health system and that it was third parties who referenced the relationship.

“The lawsuit, in a sense, represented a form of intimidation and professional reprisal, and I feel vindicated by the dismissal,” McCullough said.

A spokesperson from Baylor Scott and White Health told The Daily Wire in an emailed statement that the health system takes “very seriously our responsibility to be a trusted source of information in the communities we serve.”

“Dr. McCullough is not an employee and has agreed to not represent himself as such,” the spokesperson said. “As a result, both parties mutually agreed in late January to dismiss all actions.”

McCullough participated in health system task forces, led research activities on COVID for the health system, and teamed with government officials throughout the early days of the pandemic in 2020. Prominent medical journals published peer-reviewed studies of McCullough’s early treatment and response to the COVID health crisis.

In response to his work, McCullough claims the health system decided not to renew his contract, which was “tantamount to termination” without reason or due process. Following the non-renewal, McCullough said he negotiated a settlement agreement that made way for the lawsuit.

“I’m glad it’s behind us,” he said. “The process was draining,” he continued, adding that he believes the lawsuit was designed to injure his professional career.

“Moreover, it was a message to other doctors to follow a narrative,” he said. “And that narrative is becoming increasingly uncomfortable for physicians in terms of a narrative that directs doctors not to treat patients early for COVID-19 and to continue to support and recommend emergency use authorized COVID-19 vaccination, despite mounting data that the vaccines have a very unfavorable safety profile.”

In the last several weeks I have been saying to watch the state of South Carolina for how both Republican and Democrats wings of the UniParty, RNC and DNC respectively,plan to use South Carolina as the mechanism for the 2024 illusion of choice. What I call the RNC and DNC

Essentially the RNC/DNC constructs are the roadmaps, from the club system – two private corporations, to control the 2024 primary election outcomes.

This is all about controlling the mechanisms of elections and creating the illusion of choice while the invisible hands of the big donors and club officers control the operations.

You might remember how South Carolina was the inflection point for Biden in the 2020 primary. It was the SC primary when former President Obama (Black Lives Matter) and Congressman James Clyburn (AME Church network), aligned to select Joe Biden as the control mechanism to ensure Bernie Sanders was defeated.

Team Obama was operating with a sense of urgency because momentum was with Sanders and all other candidates including Biden were fractured.

Obama and Clyburn selected Biden due to his ability to be controlled. Most of the Obama administration now operates inside the Biden administration controlling the outcomes. Part of the ‘what’s in it for me’ aspect from Clyburn was the promise of increased influence and affluence. Including the pre-approval, first right of refusal, for the Biden VP pick (ultimately Kamala Harris).

For 2024 the movement of South Carolina is being pushed to the base voters of the DNC through the social justice narrative about needing a more diverse state for the first DNC primary contest. No good Democrat political activists can counter that culturally approved party position. Predominately white states are bad, more diverse states are good. Thus, under this “diversity” premise, there can be no opposition or dissent from the party base. The justification is a political minefield.

However, that said, that justification is a ruse, a pretense intended to cloud and protect the Club roadmap. In reality, team Obama are fulfilling the prior pledge to James Clyburn.

Obama got to choose the 2020 candidate based on his needs to protect himself from scrutiny of prior White House operations. Now, with statutes of limitations tolling, Clyburn gets the 2024 power position to select the next nominee.

That’s the non-pretending reality thateveryone will say is ‘conspiracy theory’, it isn’t.

The new management of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX—which collapsed last year amid allegations of widespread fraud—has called on politicians to return donations from the company or its founder Sam Bankman-Fried. It’s a long, long list.

FTX and its debtors said Sunday they were sending confidential messages to politicians, political action funds, and other groups that received payments from or at the direction of FTX, its executives, or former CEO Bankman-Fried. FTX said it is asking recipients of donations to return funds to the company by Feb. 28 as the group continues to wind through what it has called an “unprecedented” bankruptcy process involving potentially up to a million creditors.

A formal call to politicians over the weekend to return donations comes after a request from the company in December asking for recipients of FTX money to return funds voluntarily. “To the extent such payments are not returned voluntarily, the FTX debtors reserve the right to commence actions before the Bankruptcy Court to require the return of such payments, with interest accruing from the date any action is commenced,” FTX said in a press release.

The collapse of FTX in November—amid allegations that billions of dollars in customer funds were mishandled and lost—came as a shock to crypto markets, the industry, investors, and politicians.

In no small part, that was because Bankman-Fried built a reputation as a reliable, pro-regulation figure in an industry known as the “Wild West” of finance, courting influence in Washington, D.C., and becoming a fixture of Capitol Hill crypto lobbying.

Bankman-Fried and members of his team quickly rose to be among the biggest political donors in the U.S., contributing more than $70 million to election campaigns in the 18 months prior to FTX’s bankruptcy, The Wall Street Journal has reported. That included $40 million Bankman-Fried personally gave to politicians and political-action committees—mostly linked to the Democratic Party—according to the Journal.

With FTX looking to recoup possibly billions of dollars in funds to pay creditors, clawbacks like these are likely to continue.

If the bankruptcy court has reason to believe funds used by FTX or its executives to make loans of investments—let alone donations—actually belonged to customers, the court could order the money be returned. It’s a dark cloud that is likely to continue hanging over the beaten-down crypto industry in particular, since FTX and its associated companies, including trading firm Alameda Research, played a crucial role in the interconnected digital asset space.

Ukraine accused of chemical warfare

Toxic compounds have reportedly been used against Russian troops in Donbass

Russian military commanders are reporting that Ukrainian troops have been deploying some kind of chemical weapon against their units in Donbass, according to a local official.

Speaking to Russian television on Monday, Denis Pushilin, the acting governor of the Donetsk People’s Republic, said his office has been receiving reports aboutpossible chemical warfare “for at least two weeks.”Ukrainian troops have reportedly been deploying “chemical compounds that make our military service members ill,” he said.

Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the Kremlin, declined to discuss the allegation with journalists, saying that his office didn’t have accurate information about the issue.

He said the Russian military would pass such incidents up the chain of command and suggested contacting the Defense Ministry with further inquiries. The Defense Ministry did not immediately comment on the claim.

Speculation that some Ukrainian units may useair-dropped munitions with a chemical agenthas been swirling on social media since mid-January. The rumors were apparently triggered by a video that surfaced showing people in Ukrainian military uniforms assembling small quad drones carrying small containers, with the payload apparently taken from a refrigerator. Some military experts suggested that whatever was used must have beenvolatile if it had to be stored at a low temperature.

Chemical warfare is forbidden under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), an international treaty that took effect in 1997 and to which both Ukraine and Russia are signatories. The military prohibition applies even to riot control agents, colloquially known as tear gas, though unlike other chemical weapons, the CWC allows such substances to be manufactured and used in law enforcement.

The risk of Kiev attempting to build a so-called ‘dirty bomb’ remains, a senior Russian diplomat has said. The Russian military has claimed previously that Ukraine was making an explosive device meant to spread radioactive contamination.

“Ukraine has the potential necessary to make a ‘dirty bomb,’ it doesn’t take much effort. Especially since Ukraine has been a nation advanced in nuclear technology since the Soviet times, [and] has many technologies and expertise,” Mikhail Ulyanov told journalists on Wednesday, as quoted by RIA Novosti.

The diplomat heads the Russian mission to UN agencies based in Vienna, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN’s nuclear watchdog. He was giving a year-end press conference via video link.

General Igor Kirillov, the commander of the Russian military branch responsible for protecting troops from weapons of mass destruction, claimed in October that Kiev was “at the final stage” of producing a dirty bomb. Ukraine and its Western backers dismissed the allegation, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba calling it part of a Russian propaganda campaign.

The IAEA sent inspectors to a handful of sites in Ukraine at the invitation of its government. They found no undeclared activity there, the agency reported in November. Kiev has stated that the UN agency exonerated it from the Russian accusations.

Asked to respond to this claim on Monday, Peskov confirmed that the two leaders held “a very intensive dialogue” and “frequently communicated” during Bennett’s tenure as PM. However, the spokesman refused to share confidential information.

Syria responds to Russian aid offer

Syrian President Bashar Assad has accepted Russia’s offer of assistance following a series of deadly earthquakes that rocked the region on Monday, the Kremlin has said. Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Assad by phone to convey his condolences and offer help.

The earthquakes rocked the northern part of Syria and central and southeastern Türkiye, resulting in a combined death toll of over 1,400 so far.

Putin offered to provide Syria with all the necessary assistance to help deal with the consequences of the disaster, the Kremlin press service said.

The Kremlin said Assad “gratefully accepted this offer” and thatrescuers from Russia’s Emergency Ministry will fly to Syria “in the next few hours” to assist with relief efforts.

Moscow also sent a cable to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in which Putin offered Russia’s deepest condolences on the numerous casualties and massive destruction caused by the earthquakes. He asked Erdogan to relay “words of earnest sympathy”to the families of those killed and wished for the swift rescue of all survivors.

Russia has also offered Türkiye its assistance in dealing with the aftermath of the disaster and said rescue workers were ready to depart immediately to help out.

Erdogan and Putin are expected to discuss the issue by phone later on Monday, according to the Kremlin.

Baylor accused McCullough in the $1 million lawsuit of “reputational harm,” stating that McCullough gave several media interviews and was published in journals that mentioned Baylor as an affiliate even though he had parted ways with the employer.

McCullough became a controversial figure in the medical field amid the global pandemic, which prompted medical associations and legacy media to discredit his promotion of hydroxychloroquine and other early treatments.

In December 2021, the cardiologist appeared on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast where he made a number of claims about information surrounding treatments for the coronavirus, including questioning the efficacy and safety of the vaccines and how the pandemic started.

“When I graduated from medical school, I took the Hippocratic Oath, which said that, above all, I would do no harm to any patient, and I would do everything in my power to help each and every patient,” McCullough said. “I’ve done that throughout the pandemic — not only with my personal patients — but through my public statements in my work as a public figure to help as many people in the world as possible, helping them avoid hospitalization and death with COVID-19 illness and helping them avoid injury, disability and death with COVID-19 vaccination.”

“I think this is a very important stance — I wouldn’t do anything any differently,” he said. “Whether there was a lawsuit or no lawsuit — this is very important.

The number of fatalities keeps rising, unfortunately. So far, more than 912 people were confirmed dead in Turkey alone from the first magnitude 7.8 quake early in the morning.

Turkey's president Tayyip Erdogan announced also that 2,818 buildings were destroyed in the earthquake and 5,385 Turkish citizens were injured.

In Syria on the other side of the border, at least 326 people have been killed in areas controlled by the Syrian regime and 150 in other rebel-held areas. According to newspaper sources, more than 600 people were injured.

Both numbers are likely to rise even more as a second massive quake of magnitude 7.5 hit the same area only 8 hours later, at 12.24 local time noon.

Harry Whittington, the prominent Texas lawyer who was shot in the face by Dick Cheney and then infamously apologised to the then-vice president for the accident, has died at the age of 95.

He passed away peacefully at home early on Saturday morning, his wife Mercedes Baker confirmed to The New York Times.

Whittington’s name shot to national attention back in 2006 when Mr Cheney shot him in a dramatic hunting accident.

The accidental shooting unfolded on 11 February 2006 – mid-way through Mr Cheney’s second term as vice president to President George W Bush – when the two men were among a group hunting quail on a south Texas ranch.

When a group of birds took flight, Mr Cheney had wheeled around and taken a shot, accidentally shooting Whittington in the face and torso.

Whittington, who was 78 at the time, was rushed to hospital for multiple gunshot wounds.

At the time, it was said that he had suffered a minor heart attack caused by bullet fragments hitting blood vessels close to his heart.

Years later, Whittington revealed that his injuries were more serious than was publicly revealed.

Shockingly, the victim was blamed by the White House and eyewitnesses for what happened, claiming he stepped in Mr Cheney’s line of fire.

And, more bizarrely still, Whittington issued a public apology to the vice president – while recovering from multiple injuries.

“We all assume certain risks in whatever we do, whatever activities we pursue. And regardless of how experienced, careful and dedicated we are, accidents do and will happen,” he famously said on leaving hospital.

“My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice-President Cheney and his family have had to go through this past week.

“We send our love and respect to them, as they deal with situations that are much more serious than what we’ve had to deal with this week.”

He added: “We hope that he will continue to come to Texas and seek the relaxation that he deserves.”

It remains unclear whether or not Mr Cheney returned his apology, publicly saying at the time: “Thankfully Harry Whittington is on the mend and doing well.”

In his 2011 memoir “In My Time”, the former vice president described the incident as one of the “saddest” days of his life and said he was “of course, deeply sorry”.

“I, of course, was deeply sorry for what Harry and his family had gone through,” he wrote.

“The day of the hunting accident was one of the saddest of my life.”

Mr Whittington rarely hunted after the accident and reportedly kept his bloodied vest to teach his children the dangers of guns, according to The Washington Post.

Outside of the hunting accident, Whittington was a prominent Texas attorney who was well-known in the state’s Republican circles.

Born into a family of Democrats in Henderson, Texas, in 1927, Whittington became one of a key group who switched to Republican and built the party’s prominence in the state.

After studying law at the University of Texas, he joined George H.W. Bush’s 1964 unsuccessful campaign for the US Senate and was a donor for the younger Bush’s two successful presidential elections.

He was also elected to several Texas boards including the Texas Department of Corrections and the Texas Board of Criminal Justice.

In 2001, he called on then-Governor Rick Perry to ban the execution of developmentally disabled prisoners. Mr Perry refused but the Supreme Court banned the practice some time later.

A state appeals court in Arizona has agreed to expedite a hearing into a lawsuit brought by former GOP gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake alleging enough election improprieties in November to have cost her a victory against then-Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, who has since been inaugurated as governor.

The decision by the Arizona Court of Appeals comes after the state Supreme Court rejected her case earlier this month and remanded it to be heard first in lower courts. In a brief order, the court agreed with Lake’s arguments that her challenge should be handled as a “special action petition.” The court date is reportedly scheduled for March.

As her lawsuit is pending, Lake’s campaign responded to rumors that she is considering a run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Krysten Sinema, who left her party months ago and is now a self-declared Independent.

“I’m told Kari Lake is considering running for the US Senate seat held by Kyrsten Sinema in 2024,” CNN political reporter Kate Sullivan posted on Twitter.

A recent poll showed that the firebrand Republican would defeat sitting Independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema and Democrat challenger Ruben Gallego.

“The survey, released January 11 by the website Blueprint Polling, imagined a scenario in which Sinema, a former Democrat turned independent who’s held her Senate seat since 2019, runs for reelection against Lake and Gallego, a Democrat who represents the state’s 3rd Congressional District. Lake, who rumors say is considering running for the seat but has not confirmed this, polled at 36 percent, according to Blueprint, well ahead of the two rivals. Gallego trailed closely with 32 percent, while Sinema ran a distant third with 14 percent,” Deseret News reported.

The poll said that in a three-way contest, one of six voters surveyed was undecided, which could assist Sen. Sinema in keeping her position.

Since leaving the Democrat Party last month, Sen. Sinema has gained support from Republican and Democrat voters and, the poll said that her best chance to stay in the Senate “may be for the Republican party to nominate a candidate so flawed that moderate and conservative voters would abandon that person for the Independent Sinema.”

Sinema officially left the Democratic Party in December and changed her affiliation to the Independent. Her move weakens Democrats’ already tenuous hold on the upper chamber. Prior to her announcement, Democrats had a 51-50 majority in the U.S. Senate.

Prince Harry says he was bred to offer spare organs to heir William

Prince Harry bitterly believes he was only bred to offer literal spare parts for his brother in case the heir apparent ever needed new organs.

“Two years older than me, Willy was the Heir, whereas I was the Spare,” the exiled prince wrote in explaining the title of his memoir, “Spare,” which was officially released Tuesday.

“I was the shadow, the support, the Plan B. I was brought into the world in case something happened to Willy,” he wrote of his 40-year-old brother and current heir to the throne, William.

He said he understood his role was to be a “diversion” and “distraction” from his brother — or to provide, “if necessary, a spare part” to him.

“Kidney, perhaps. Blood transfusion. Speck of bone marrow,” he added in morose detail.

He also noted how his dad, now King Charles III, could never be on a plane with his elder son, William, “because there must be no chance of the first and second in line to the throne being wiped out.”

“But no one gave a damn whom I traveled with; the Spare could always be spared,” Harry claimed.

“This was all made explicitly clear to me from the start of life’s journey and regularly reinforced thereafter,” he claimed of his apparent throwaway standing in the family.

Harry complained that the heir and spare clarification “wasn’t merely how the press referred to us,” but was also “the shorthand used by” his royal family, including “Mummy,” the late Princess Diana, “and even Granny,” the since-deceased Queen Elizabeth II.

He says he was 20 when he was first told that his dad had greeted his birth by quipping: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an Heir and a Spare — my work is done.”

“A joke. Presumably,” Harry wrote, continuing the ruthless dig at the king by claiming that “minutes after delivering this bit of high comedy, Pa was said to have gone off to meet with his girlfriend.”

Despite naming his memoir “Spare” — and using his clear distaste for his role in life to justify his ultimate split from his family — Harry maintains that he was initially accepting of it.

“I took no offense, I felt nothing about it, any of it,” he wrote — initially acknowledging his incredibly privileged life.

“Every boy and girl, at least once, imagines themselves as a prince or a princess. Therefore, Spare or no Spare, it wasn’t half bad to actually be one,” he conceded.

That soon changed, however, with Harry feeling there was a “public sacrifice of the Spare” to help elevate other royals, starting with 2002 headlines damning his druggy lifestyle — which he now admits had been mostly true anyway.

It grew worse when William and his wife, Princess of Wales Catherine, had two kids, according to Harry — who reckons he was told that as fifth in line for the throne, he was “no longer even the Spare of the Spare.”

Still, his supposed role in life was largely blamed for one of the most dramatic moments in the book, when Harry claims his brother knocked him to the floor during a fight.

That, Harry wrote, came because William “was in full Heir mode, and couldn’t fathom why I wasn’t dutifully playing the role of the Spare.”

The royal family has yet to comment on Harry’s book or his seemingly endless tour of TV and magazine interviews.
