Animals are falling sick or dying near the train derailment and chemical fire in East Palestine, Ohio, according to widespread reports, which has sparked fears of more widespread impacts.

Taylor Holzer, owner of a farm just outside the evacuation zone near the fire, told WKBN that several animals that he keeps on his property became ill. Some developed a range of symptoms, including liquid diarrhea and puffy faces.

“Out of nowhere, he just started coughing really hard, just shut down, and he had liquid diarrhea and just went very fast,” Holzer told the outlet of one of his animals. “Smoke and chemicals from the train, that’s the only thing that can cause it, because it doesn’t just happen out of nowhere,” he added. “The chemicals that we’re being told are safe in the air, that’s definitely not safe for the animals … or people.”

Authorities have said the train was carrying highly toxic vinyl chloride, hydrogen chloride, and other hazardous materials before it derailed. The Norfolk Southern Railroad train derailed while it was heading to Pennsylvania on Feb. 3.

Professor Kevin Crist, the director of Ohio University’s Air Quality Center, said that vinyl chloride is carcinogenic, causing cancer of the liver and order organs.

“Breathe those in under heavy concentrations, and it’s really bad for you,” Crist told ABC News. “It’s like an acid mist. It’s not something that you want to be around in high concentrations.”

“My video camera footage shows my chickens were perfectly fine before they started this burn, and as soon as they started the burn, my chickens slowed down and they died,” Amanda Breshears of North Lima, Ohio, told ABC27. “If it can do this to chickens in one night, imagine what it’s going to do to us in 20 years.”

There were also claims of fish dying in waterways in or near East Palestine.

“Leslie Run comes out of East Palestine and that goes into Bull Creek, which then goes into North Fork. And we know for sure that there has been some fish kill in Leslie Run and Bull Creek, and some portions of the North Fork,” Matthew Smith, assistant regional scenic river manager for the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, told WKBN.

Responding to those reports, Kurt Kollar with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Emergency Response, said in a news conference that those claims are being monitored.

“We knew at the onset of this incident there was impact to Sulfur Creek and waters of the state of Ohio. Since that point in time, we have been able to successfully control that runoff and contain the water and either treat it in place, along with a robust sampling program for the water quality,” Kollar said.

“We basically nuked a town with chemicals so we could get a railroad open,” said Sil Caggiano, a hazardous materials specialist, in an interview with WKBN over the weekend, referring to the controlled burn.

Other than vinyl chloride—used to manufacture PVC—Caggiano noted that the train had ethylhexyl acrylate on board. The substance is not only carcinogenic, but it can cause burning and irritation in the skin and eyes, coughing, and shortness of breath.

New York judge declines to sanction Trump legal team in civil lawsuit

A New York state judge Wednesday admonished former President Donald Trump and his legal team for “excess verbiage” in legal filings, which prompted New York Attorney General Letitia James to request sanctions on Tuesday. However, Judge Arthur Engoron, who is overseeing the civil lawsuit in the New York Supreme Court, declined to sanction Trump’s legal team for the nearly 300-page pretrial filing submitted on January 26. Trump’s legal team instead committed to refile the answer and trim down the length.

 

According to a Daily Beast reporter in the courtroom Wednesday, over a dozen lawyers gathered before Engoron to address a sanctions request raised by James on Tuesday. Lawyers for the New York Attorney General’s Office argued that Trump lied in the answer to James’ September 2022 complaint. Specifically, James’ office argued Trump’s legal team falsely denied facts that they previously admitted in addition to denying knowledge sufficient to respond to the complaint and used defenses previously rejected by the court.

 

Trump’s legal team disputed the accusations and asked to negotiate behind closed doors, rather than in open court before the media. A lawyer for Eric Trump, one of Trump’s children included in James’ lawsuit, argued the answer was not filed in bad faith. The heart of Trump’s legal team’s argument appeared to be that James’ wrongly named the Trump Organization in her original complaint. Because of the corporate structure of the Trump Organization, Trump’s legal team argues that the Trump Organization is not the correct legal entity to charge.

 

After a little over an hour, Engoron called for a recess. During that time, Trump’s legal team and James’ office reached an agreement. James’ office will specifically identify the shortcomings in Trump’s nearly 300-page answer in exchange for Trump’s legal team filing an amended answer addressing said shortcomings.

 

James first filed the civil lawsuit in September 2022. In the lawsuit, James alleged Trump, with the help of his children Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric knowingly and intentionally entered more than 200 false valuations of assets on financial documents in violation of New York Executive Law 63(12). James is seeking to permanently bar Trump and his children from serving as an officer or director of any licensed New York corporation or business, bar Trump and his organization from acquiring any New York real estate for five years, and to obtain disgorgement of all financial benefits Trump obtained—estimated at a total of $250 million.

 

If the lawsuit does not settle, it is set to go to a bench trial before Engoron on October 2.

HOUSTON — Emergency crews responded to a train derailment along the Eastex Freeway in the Splendora area Monday morning, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

 

The East Montgomery County Fire Department reports a man driving an 18-wheeler involved in the crash with the train died.

 

This happened around 7:30 a.m. along the tracks at Midline Road. The Texas Department of Transportation said the Eastex Freeway is back open heading north in the area after being closed for a few hours.

 

Splendora Police Department said the train was heading south when the big rig crossed the tracks and was hit. The 18-wheeler was dragged half a mile down the tracks.

 

Police said there are no guard arms or lights at this crossing where the crash took place, but that the driver of the truck should have had a clear line of sight to see the train coming.

 

Views from Air 11 show several cars off of the tracks near the crash. The Splendora Police Department said about 15 cars derailed in the crash.

 

Hazmat crews are on the scene but there are no leaks from the cars. They are cleaning up some of the spilled diesel fuel from the truck.

 

Police said it could in a total of 15 hours to clear the scene.

US Government Issues Travel Advisory – Warns All US Citizens to Leave Russia Immediately

 

The US Department of State issued a top-level travel advisory for Americans in Russia. The Biden regime warned all US citizens to leave the country immediately.

 

The White House warned of the potential for harassment and the singling out of U.S. citizens for detention by Russian government security officials. Just like the Biden administration does to January 6 Trump supporters.

 

The warning marks the highest level, Level 4, of alerts issued by the State Department, according to Reuters.

 

“Do not travel to Russia due to the unpredictable consequences of the unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces, the potential for harassment and the singling out of U.S. citizens for detention by Russian government security officials, the arbitrary enforcement of local law, limited flights into and out of Russia, the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia, and the possibility of terrorism. U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Russia should depart immediately. Exercise increased caution due to the risk of wrongful detentions,” U.S. Embassy said in the release.

 

Earlier this month, Vladimir Putin condemned western tank supply to Ukraine and threatened a response that goes beyond armored vehicles.

 

It can be recalled that the Biden regime agreed to send Abrams tanks to Ukraine to fight the Russian military.

 

This means the US will be forced to send men and women to operate the tanks and perform maintenance. It is the Biden regime’s attempt to escalate the war in Ukraine.

 

Less than 24 hours later, Germany announced they would be sending Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

 

The Kremlin called this move a “blatant provocation.”

 

“Unbelievable, but true – we are once again threatened with German Leopard tanks, with crosses on their hull. And once again seeking to battle Russia in Ukraine with the help of Hitler’s followers, the Banderites,” Putin said.

And if the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. It’s not a bluff,” Putin warned.

 

The Doomsday Clock was moved closer than it ever has to midnight, prompting the World Health Organization to urge countries to begin stockpiling medications for “nuclear emergencies.”

Nord Stream blast story was ‘not hard to find’ – author

Media outlets like the NYT and WaPo “don’t seem to have anyone inside” among their sources, Seymour Hersh claims

 

Legendary investigative journalist Seymour Hersh claimed on Saturday that his latest bombshell report, which suggests the CIA was responsible for the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines in September, was not a hard story to find. It was obvious that there was more to the issue than was being reported by most media outlets, Hersh said.

 

In his first interview since he published the story on Substack last Wednesday, the Pulitzer-prize winning journalist was asked by Radio War Nerd to comment on his source for the story, who still remains anonymous.

 

Hersh refused to expose any details about who he spoke to and noted that it was his job to protect his sources and take the heat when a story went live. But those within the media who criticize him for using anonymous sources should “understand the business a little better,”the journalist suggested.

 

“The problem is, it’s all been cheapened. Because now the New York Times and the Washington Post think an unnamed source can be a press guy, a press secretary, that whispers something to them on the side.I don’t know, they don’t seem to have anyone inside,” Hersh said.

 

He also noted that major news outlets are failing to report a lot of things about the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev. “The war I know about is not the war you’re reading about,” Hersh observed.

 

“It’s amazing to me how they fall in line, my colleagues,” he added, lamenting that many outlets such as the NYT, WP, CNN and MSN have become a front for the White House and the Biden administration.

 

As for the Nord Stream expose, Hersh insisted it was “not a hard story to find” and that it was obvious that some NATO country was involved, especially after top US officials, including President Joe Biden, issued clear threats that the Russian-German project would be stopped “one way or another” if Moscow chose to send troops to Ukraine back in February 2022.

 

Hersh also pointed out that the entire international pipeline industry knew “who did what” and that this was a reality that “nobody thinks about.” “But I did, so there you are,” he concluded.

 

The White House, as well as officials from the CIA and State Department, have all vehemently dismissed Hersh’s report since it was published. Moscow, meanwhile, has called for an open international investigation into the attack, saying it was “impossible to leave this without finding the perpetrators and punishing them.”

Luna displayed a poster with the members of Jira – which included government agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security and CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency), National Association of Secretaries of State, the National Association of State Election Directors, leftist non-profits, and even the Democratic National Committee. There were no right-leaning non-profits or representatives from the Republican National Committee on Jira.

 

The hearings and Rep. Luna, primarily focused on the use of Jira to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story, which has been established by polling to have swayed the 2020 election in Biden’s favor significantly more than the margin of victory.

 

Luna stated that Jira is “a joint action between the federal government and a private company to censor and violate the first amendment. This is also known as “joint state actors”…. It is highly illegal.”

 

Recall the now famous 2020 Time Magazine article which boldly declared the existence of, “a well-funded cabal of powerful people, ranging across industries and ideologies, working together behind the scenes to influence perceptions, change rules and laws, steer media coverage and control the flow of information.”

 

Rep. Luna’s exposure of key figures using the Jira platform now confirms that the tacit admissions provided in the Time Magazine article were not merely the result of a loosely knit far-left coalition—but rather a highly illegal enterprise.

 

The fact that the membership included the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), which have membership from all fifty states, should alarm all people concerned about election integrity, but especially New Mexicans.

 

The New Mexico Secretary of State, Maggie Toulouse Oliver, was made the president of the NASS in July 2020, just months prior to the most controversial election in U.S. History. As president of NASS, she would have certainly known about the existence of Jira, and evidence exists that she used it to suppress the first amendment rights of New Mexicans.

Actor Mark Hamill, who portrayed Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, has called himself a “good soldier” of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. In September, Hamill became an ambassador of Kiev’s Army of Drones campaign, which is in charge of acquiring reconnaissance UAVs, according to its website.

 

In an interview published on Monday, the actor told Politico that his role in helping Kiev during its conflict with Russia was “much more meaningful than what I’m used to doing.”

 

Hamill was quoted as saying that he was a “good soldier” who would do anything Zelensky or his team asked him to. “I follow orders,” he added.

 

The actor, who often comments on political issues on Twitter, has been selling signed Star Wars posters in order to raise funds for Ukraine. While some social media users have praised Hamill’s involvement, others have argued that he could have been raising money to help those in the US.

 

Mark Hamill is not the only Hollywood actor to openly support Kiev in its conflict with Moscow. "Get The Hell Out Of There" - Ohio's Apocalyptic Chemical Disaster Rages On

 

While the US government is dispensing millions of dollars in resources to treat balloons as an existential crisis, a small town in Ohio finds itself engulfed in what actually looks like the apocalypse. Perhaps by design, all of the drama surrounding violations of US airspace by Chinese spy initiatives has done well to keep what is becoming one of the worst environmental disasters in recent memory from getting any headlines.

 

The chaos began early last week when a train of more than 100 cars derailed in East Palestine, Ohio near the state’s border with Pennsylvania with roughly 5,000 residents. The accident launched fifty of those hundred freight cars from the tracks. Twenty of the freight cars on the train were carrying hazardous materials, ten of which were detailed. While the accident had no fatalities, of those ten cars, five contained pressurized vinyl chloride, a highly flammable carcinogenic gas.

 

In order to address the volatile scenario around the crash site, the Ohio Emergency Management Agency executed its plan of venting the toxic gas with a controlled burn in order to evade an uncontrolled explosion which presented the risk of catastrophic damage. “Within the last two hours, a drastic temperature change has taken place in a rail car, and there is now the potential of a catastrophic tanker failure which could cause an explosion with the potential of deadly shrapnel traveling up to a mile,” Gov. Mike DeWine warned in statement explaining the decision to take action to avert widespread devastation.

 

However, that operation sent large plumes of smoke containing vinyl chloride, phosgene, hydrogen chloride, and other gases into the air as the flames from the controlled burn raged on for days. Phosgene in particular is a highly toxic gas that can cause vomiting and respiratory trouble. The toxicity of phosgene gas is so potent that it was previously used as a chemical weapon during the First World War.

 

The hazardous airborne chemicals prompted officials to issue mandatory evacuation and shelter-in-place orders within a one-mile radius of where the train derailed. Those orders forced nearly 2,000 residents of East Palestine out of there homes. Despite the public safety risk in proximity to the crash site, over 500 people within the parameters of the evacuation order refused to leave their homes. However, those orders were lifted on February 8th, allowing residents to return to the area adjacent to the disaster.

Gretchen Whitmer Defends Using TikTok Despite Most States And Congress Banning Use On Govt Devices

 

Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Sunday made excuses for using the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok, despite Congress and most states partially or fully banning the app on government-issued devices.

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Whitmer was pressed by host Jake Tapper on why she continues to use the app after concerns about data privacy sparked politicians across the country to take action.

 

“You’re active on TikTok,” Tapper began. “And I get it, it’s fun. But I deleted my app from my phone because so many people kept coming on my show saying, delete it, delete it, delete it. The Chinese government has access to your data. Is it appropriate for you to be on TikTok when the FBI says it’s a national security concern?”

“We use TikTok on one device that has nothing else on it,” Whitmer responded. “It is a communication tool. We don’t do it because it’s fun, although some people think what I put out there can be fun on occasion… But the point is, we have it on one device that has no access to anything else, because so many people get their information that way.”

 

“Whether we like it or not, that is a tool for disseminating important information,” she added. “And that’s how we use it. But we’re always evaluating because we want to make sure that we are protecting data in Michigan. And that’s why we’re always evaluating. But, at this point, the way we use it is secure.”

 

But when pressed again by Tapper about the negative effects on Americans’ mental health, Whitmer admitted that young people need to learn that the app is not a reliable source of information.

 

“We need to have some congressional measures taken to ensure that there is some integrity in it,” she said. “But, also, we got to teach our kids that this is not a real robust offering of information, for you to distill and make your own decisions.”

The US military is conducting wide-area surveillance tests across six midwest states using experimental high-altitude balloons, documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reveal.

Up to 25 unmanned solar-powered balloons are being launched from rural South Dakota and drifting 250 miles through an area spanning portions of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Missouri, before concluding in central Illinois.

Travelling in the stratosphere at altitudes of up to 65,000ft, the balloons are intended to “provide a persistent surveillance system to locate and deter narcotic trafficking and homeland security threats”, according to a filing made on behalf of the Sierra Nevada Corporation, an aerospace and defence company.

The balloons are carrying hi-tech radars designed to simultaneously track many individual vehicles day or night, through any kind of weather. The tests, which have not previously been reported, received an FCC license to operate from mid-July until September, following similar flights licensed last year.

Arthur Holland Michel, the co-director of the Center for the Study of the Drone at Bard College in New York, said, “What this new technology proposes is to watch everything at once. Sometimes it’s referred to as ‘combat TiVo’ because when an event happens somewhere in the surveilled area, you can potentially rewind the tape to see exactly what occurred, and rewind even further to see who was involved and where they came from.”

The tests have been commissioned by the US Southern Command (Southcom), which is responsible for disaster response, intelligence operations and security cooperation in the Caribbean and Central and South America. Southcom is a joint effort by the US army, navy, air force and other forces, and one of its key roles is identifying and intercepting drug shipments headed for the United States.

“We do not think that American cities should be subject to wide-area surveillance in which every vehicle could be tracked wherever they go,” said Jay Stanley, a senior policy analyst at the American Civil Liberties Union.

“Even in tests, they’re still collecting a lot of data on Americans: who’s driving to the union house, the church, the mosque, the Alzheimer’s clinic,” he said. “We should not go down the road of allowing this to be used in the United States and it’s disturbing to hear that these tests are being carried out, by the military no less.”

For many years, Sierra Nevada has supplied Southcom with light aircraft packed with millions of dollars’ worth of sensors, which then flew over Mexico, Colombia, Panama and the Caribbean sea. But planes require expensive crews and can only fly for a few hours at a time. In a report to the Senate armed services committee this February, Southcom’s commander, Admiral Craig Faller, wrote: “While improving efficiency, we still only successfully interdicted about six percent of known drug movements [in 2018].”

The new balloons promise a cheap surveillance platform that could follow multiple cars and boats for extended periods. And because winds often travel in different directions at different altitudes, the balloons can usually hover over a given area simply by ascending or descending.

Neither Sierra Nevada nor US Southcom responded to requests for comment on this story. However, the rival balloon operator World View recently announced that it had carried out multi-week test missions in which its own stratospheric balloons were able to hover over a five-mile-diameter area for six and a half hours, and larger areas for days at a time.

“The very nature of [these balloons] is that they can operate for weeks and months,” said Ryan Hartman, the CEO of World View. “The challenge is how to harness the stratospheric winds to be able to create a persistent station-keeping capability for customers.”

Raven Aerostar, the company that is supplying the balloons for Southcom’s tests and launching them from its facility in South Dakota, told the Guardian that it has had balloons remain aloft for nearly a month. Raven also makes balloons for the Alphabet subsidiary Loon, which uses them to help deliver internet and cellphone service from the stratosphere.

The FCC documents show that Southcom’s balloons are carrying small, satellite-like vehicles housing sophisticated sensors and communication gear. One of those sensors is a synthetic aperture radar intended to detect every car or boat in motion on a 25-mile swath beneath the balloon.

The balloons also have advanced mesh networking technologies that allow them to communicate with one another, share data and pass it to receivers on the ground below.

The FCC filing notes that this networking includes video information. That suggests that the balloons might also carry a Sierra Nevada video capture system called Gorgon Stare. This wide-area surveillance system comprises nine cameras capable of recording panoramic images across an entire city simultaneously.

While Gorgon Stare is usually deployed on drones, Michel said that the US army has used tethered spy blimps in Afghanistan, and that US Customs and Border Protection has experimented with low-altitude balloons along the Mexico border.

But surveillance from stratospheric balloons is relatively new, said Michel, author of Eyes in the Sky, a recent book on wide area surveillance: “The higher the altitude of the system, the wider the area that you can cover. The trade-off is that depending on the area and the system, you may get lower-resolution images.” Balloons are also subject to fewer restrictions and regulations than drones.

It is unclear from the FCC documents whether Southcom’s tests within the US are linked to any active narcotic or counter-terrorism investigations. Also, none of the parties involved would say whether the midwest vehicle data would be deleted, stored or passed on to other federal or local agencies.

“[We would like to know] what they are they doing with that data, how they are storing it, and whether they are contemplating deploying this in the US,” said the ACLU’s Stanley. “Because if they decide that it’s usable domestically, there’s going to be enormous pressure to deploy it.”

The Southcom surveillance tests are probably just the tip of the iceberg. Scott Wickersham, the vice-president of Raven Aerostar, told the Guardian that it has also been working with Sierra Nevada and the Pentagon’s research arm Darpa on a “highly sophisticated and challenging development around the stratosphere”. This refers to the agency’s Adaptable Lighter-Than-Air (Alta) program, an ongoing effort to perfect stratospheric balloon navigation which has included multiple launches across the country, Wickersham said.

Ryan Hartman said that World View had also completed a dozen surveillance test missions for a customer it would not name, capturing data he would not specify.

“Obviously, there are laws to protect people’s privacy and we are respectful of all those laws,” Hartman said. “We also understand the importance of operating in an ethical way as it relates to further protecting people’s privacy.”

Meanwhile, World View is currently preparing for its next surveillance flight, and Sierra Nevada’s tests in the midwest continue.

Kenyan Babies Being Used as Test Subjects in Biometric-based Vaccine Tracking System

 

More than 1,000 babies are involved in the trials

 

Advancements are being made in controversial tests carried out in a hospital in a small town in Kenya to develop a biometric vaccination management tracking program for newborns.

 

The new method aims to ensure that as soon as a child is born and receives their first vaccine, biometric scanning of four of their fingers takes place, and in addition to fingerprinting babies, their caregivers’ biometric voice data is also collected.

 

The purpose of this is to monitor identities and manage vaccination histories, those behind the scheme said, noting that it is supposed to be used for the first 24 months of the babies’ lives and track how eight vaccines and one supplement are given to them.

 

Both the fingerprints and the voice data will then allegedly be removed, the group developing the biometric system has promised.

 

Biometric authentication company NEC, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), and Nagasaki University from Japan are the ones who in 2019 partnered to develop the program, which is currently undergoing clinical trials at Kinango Sub-County Hospital in Kwale, Kenya.

 

The trials, which started in September and are scheduled to last through March, have covered a total of 1,000 newborn babies and their caregivers. Even though the tests are not over, the early results are now coming in, which the three partners describe as “highly encouraging.”

 

More tests are planned with more hospitals – and Kenya has been chosen as the country that will see the baby biometric fingerprinting system fully deployed. The plan is for this to happen by the end of the year.

 

The program is pitched as supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – namely, those providing legal identity and birth registration for all, ending preventable deaths among newborns and children under 5, and reducing neonatal mortality.

 

As for NEC – which is considered a global leader in providing face recognition, iris recognition, fingerprint/palmprint recognition, voice recognition, and ear acoustic authentication – it is also working on another project to commercialize infant biometrics while it has more projects carried out in sub-Saharan Africa in its portfolio.

‘The Only Solution:’ Yale Prof Suggests Mass Suicide for Elderly in Japan

 

Yale University professor Yusuke Narita is suggesting mass suicide for elderly people in Japan, according to a report by the New York Times. The professor is now backtracking, claiming that his in-depth discussion of mass suicide is “an abstract metaphor.”

 

“I feel like the only solution is pretty clear,” Narita, an assistant professor of economics at Yale. “In the end, isn’t it mass suicide and mass ‘seppuku’ of the elderly?”

 

Seppuku refers to “an act of ritual disembowelment,” noted the New York Times, which also described the Yale professor as an individual who has “taken on the question of how to deal with the burdens of Japan’s rapidly aging society.”

 

Last year, after being asked to elaborate on his mass suicide ideas, Narita suggested it could be a “good thing” to “work hard toward creating a society” like the one depicted in the 2019 horror film Midsommar, in which a Swedish cult has elderly members of its community commit suicide by jumping off a cliff.

 

“Whether that’s a good thing or not, that’s a more difficult question to answer,” the Ivy League professor said. “So if you think that’s good, then maybe you can work hard toward creating a society like that.”

 

When it comes to euthanasia, Narita has suggested “the possibility of making it mandatory in the future.”

 

After facing some backlash, the 37-year-old professor said his comments were “taken out of context,” and that he was mainly addressing a growing effort to push seniors out of leadership in business and politics in order to make room for younger generations.

 

While not everyone agrees with Narita’s remarks about mass suicide for the elderly, he has garnered hundreds of thousands of followers on social media in Japan, many of whom are frustrated young people who think their economic success is being hindered by older generations in their society, NYT pointed out.

 

As the Yale professor grows more popular, he has appeared on magazine covers, comedy shows, in an advertisement for energy drinks, and has even “spawned an imitator” on the China-owned TikTok app, the report added.

 

In response to pushback, Narita claimed that he was using the phrases “mass suicide” and “mass seppuku” as “an abstract metaphor.”

 

“I should have been more careful about their potential negative connotations,” the Yale professor said. “After some self-reflection, I stopped using the words last year.”

 

But columnist Masato Fujisaki argued in Newsweek Japan that Narita’s comments “should not be easily taken as a ‘metaphor,'” adding that the professor’s fans are people “who think that old people should just die already and social welfare should be cut.”

 

Not everyone, however, agrees with Fujisaki’s assessment.

 

Josh Angrist, one of Narita’s doctoral supervisors at MIT, referred to his former student as a “talented scholar” with an “offbeat sense of humor.”

 

“I would like to see Yusuke continue a very promising career as a scholar,” Angrist said. “So my main concern in a case like his is that he’s being distracted by other things, and that’s kind of a shame.”

Multiple pedestrians struck by U-Haul truck in Brooklyn, New York; driver in custody

In a weekend phone call, President Trump urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the state and repeatedly made unfounded assertions about voting irregularities.

 

McBurney wrote that the report includes recommendations for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, including “a roster of who should (or should not) be indicted, and for what, in relation to the conduct (and aftermath of the 2020 general election in Georgia.” The special grand jury did not have the power to issue indictments, and it will ultimately be up to Willis to decide whether to seek indictments from a regular grand jury.

 

At a hearing on Jan. 24, Willis had argued against the immediate release of the report, saying it could violate the rights of potential defendants and negatively affect the ability to prosecute those who may be charged with crimes.

 

“We want to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and we think for future defendants to be treated fairly, it is not appropriate at this time to have this report released,” Willis said during the hearing.

 

A group of news organizations, including the Associated Press, argued in favor of releasing the report immediately in full, saying that public interest in the report is “extraordinary.”

A Conservative (Tory) MP retiring from the House of Commons after almost 20 years says the party has lost its way and behaved in “vile” manner during the Wuhan virus pandemic.

Sir Charles said he thought it would take Prime Minister Sunak — whose leadership mandate is highly dubious, given he did not lead the Conservatives into a general election and was not only not elected party leader by party members but explicitly rejected by them for the post in 2022, like his de facto number two Jeremy Hunt before him — a “long time to undo the damage.”

 

“He can do that, he has the capacity to do that,” Sir Charles added dubiously. “But the country may just decide that it is time for change.”

 

The latest polling indicates they will indeed do so in devasting fashion, with the Conservatives, despite winning their biggest parliamentary majority since the 1980s as recently as December 2019, facing a historic defeat in the next election, sinking to third place behind the left-separatist Scottish National Party (SNP) and losing the seats held by Prime Minister Sunak, predecessors Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, and over a dozen Cabinet ministers.

 

“If there’s been no movement in opinion polls at all by late this year, early next year, if we’re still running as far as behind, I think there’s a really strong case to bring Boris [Johnson] back [as leader],” lamented one MP in comments to The Telegraph.

 

The next general election can be held no later than January 2025.

The nurse, who administered the fake vaccines at the Schortens jab centre in Friesland, northwest Germany, was given just six months on probation.

 

She was found guilty of six counts of intentional assault by Oldenburg District Court, Lower Saxony state, on November 30.

 

Antje T jabbed up to 8,600 patients who were mainly hospital employees, educators and doctors above the age of 70 between March 5 and April 2021, leaving them with no protection against the deadly virus.

 

Police told the court that she was able to introduce the saline solution undetected, because she was in charge of vaccine and syringe preparation during her shift at the vaccination centre.

 

But after more than a month she was reported by another employee who saw her use the saline solution instead of the vaccine on six patients on April 21, 2021.

 

The 39-year-old had additionally posted several social media posts where she openly emphasized her skeptical views regarding COVID-19 vaccines.

 

When questioned by police, she admitted to using saline solution but had said she only did it because she had accidentally broken a vial containing six shots and was ashamed to tell her colleagues.

 

She had also claimed that it was a one-time incident, but was immediately sacked after antibody tests that were carried out on the affected people confirmed authorities' suspicions.

EU Handing $3.5 Million to George Soros’ Open Society Foundation

 

The European Union has confirmed that it is handing over $3.5 million to George Soros’ Open Society Foundation.

 

Věra Jourová, the vice president of the European Commission, has confirmed that it is providing over $3.5 million in funding to the Open Society Foundation in order to aid its campaign efforts.

 

Started by Hungarian billionaire George Soros — himself infamous for breaking the Bank of England by shorting sterling as a currency speculator in 1992, nevermind his subsequent massive political lobbying efforts — the NGO has repeatedly been accused of meddling in the affairs of various EU nations, with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán previously denouncing the leftist philanthropist as being “one of the most corrupt people in the world“.

 

Despite the reputation of its founder, the EU has confirmed that it is in active cooperation with the Open Society Foundation, which is set to receive over €3.3 million (~$3.53 million) in grants from the bloc for the operation of two projects falling under the so-called “Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values Programme”. The handover of taxpayers’ cash by the EU is remarkable given how the Open Society Foundation already has such incredibly deep pockets, thanks to its billionaire founder.

 

As part of the projects, the Open Society Foundation is to “raise awareness on rights and values through support to civil society organisations”, as well as promote “EU values” in Bulgaria, Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary.

 

The two projects are said to have begun on the first of January this year, and will both last for a total of 36 months.

 

While the funding was announced in a then little-heeded written answer from the European Union last month, Romanian Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Cristian Terhes is the latest political figure to speak out against the cash. He told Breitbart London on Monday the EU’s continued decision to hand funds to “human rights destroyers” is proof that the bloc needs reform.

 

“Soros Open Europe Foundation frequently meets and lobbies the European Commission for the promotion of anti-nation, anti-family, anti-life, anti-fundamental rights policies across EU,” the Christian Democratic National Peasants’ Party representative said.

 

“The fact that his organisation got three million euros out of taxpayers’ money from his eurocrat puppets is another confirmation why the EU needs a deep reform; where the states will take back decision-making powers from these unelected and accountable bureaucrats,” he continued, adding that power needs to be “brought back to the people”, and not left to the likes of big money lobbyists he identifies as being characterised by billionaires like George Soros or Bill Gates.

 

Jorge Buxadé — a senior figure within Spain’s populist VOX party — also denounced the decision, taking to social media last month to lash out at the EU’s handing over of funds.

 

“Globalism and destruction of nations in its purest form, financed with your money,” he wrote in response to the Open Society Foundation being funded by the EU.

An hour ago, I got an EMAIL notice from the county (I XXX'd out the name of my county):

This is a FIRST !!!!

 

Last year, I had a conversation with our very low population county emergency management head……. are there claxon type sirens (or anything similar) in town to alert citizens of incoming missile alert, or a train wrech (hazmat chems of course go thru here)… etc.

 

No, no such thing. He was fairly open to questions, UNTIL I asked about nuke. Ever since that line of questions, he has clammed up and refuses to say a word about anything.

 

One thing I did find out, is that the town's water tower's holding a little over 24 hours of water (for typical day). And they hadn't even checked the backup generator in some 20 years!!! (I asked.) And the Emerg. Dept is County, and the City is the one that does that and didn't feel like checking it to see if it will turn on……….

 

Glad I don't live in town….people won't think about not flushing it all away if they think the power is just out.

 

FYI ANONs, if you have to bug out…………… don't over look swimming pools as water source. Let the clorine gas out for several days.

I posted about doing muh taxes a couple of weeks ago. I was floored at how much I owed and I knew something was amiss. My post was essentially saying that, when people en masse begin to do their 2022 tax returns, they are in for a shock and there will beoutrage. Well, its' still early, but here's a related story at this early stage of tax season:

 

Tax refunds are almost 11% smaller this year, early data shows

 

Tax refunds so far this year are markedly smaller than the same time a year ago, according to the earliest data from the Internal Revenue Service, an outcome that many tax experts were expecting.

 

The average refund amount was $1,963 as of Feb. 3, down 10.8% from $2,201 the same period last year, the IRS reported. That’s based on nearly 8 million refunds the agency has distributed this year versus 4.33 million refunds disbursed last year. Still, a higher share of taxpayers have received refunds so far this year, with 48% of processed returns getting a refund compared with 33% last year at this time.

 

While the average amount likely will change as more returns are processed, the early data suggests that the loss of several enhanced pandemic-era tax breaks could mean a smaller, key windfall for many American households.

 

"I would argue that people's tax refunds are going to be less because of the fact that they are not going to get these special pandemic provisions anymore,” Eric Bronnenkant, head of tax at Betterment, told Yahoo Finance before the figures were released. “Obviously, everyone's situation is unique, buton average refunds are going to be smallerdue to less stimulus."

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is pushing a disturbing dystopian plan to fight so-called “digital misinformation” and “political polarization” online.

 

Speaking during a new podcast interview with German news media outlet Handelsblatt,Gates argues that artificial intelligence (AI) should be used to police the speech of humans on the Internet.

 

When asked about “political polarization” and “misinformation,” Gates gave the Jan. 6 as an example, which he referred to as an “attack” against the Capitol.

 

He continued by declaring thathe’s still “in a state of shock” over people questioning the 2020 election results.

 

“I’m certainly concerned about political polarization, and I know the U.S. situation best of all,” Gates said.

 

“I wouldn’t have expected people to attack the Capitol, or people to deny the validity of election results.

 

“I’m in a state of shock about that.

 

“We can’t blame AI for that,” he continued.

 

“That happened.

 

“It may have been magnified by digital channels that allow various conspiracy theories likeQAnonor whatever to be blasted out by people who wanted to believe those things.

 

“So, the digital tools may have played an auxiliary role.”

 

“You’ll have to take AI into consideration” to “solve the digital misinformation [problem],” Gates added.

 

He continued by describing “political polarization” as another social problem that could be partially remedied via the use of AI to reduce “confirmation bias.”

 

Gates touted the use of applications of generative AI like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which he says could improve office efficiency, drafting invoices, and letters

Georgia’s 16 fake electors may face criminal charges in election probe

11 of the Republicans filed a motion Tuesday to quash their subpoenas

ATLANTA — The Georgia prosecutor who’s investigating whether former President Donald Trump and others illegally interfered in the 2020 general election in the state has informed 16 Republicans who served as fake electors that they could face criminal charges.

They all signed a certificate declaring falsely that then-President Trump had won the 2020 presidential election and declaring themselves the state’s “duly elected and qualified” electors even though Joe Biden had won the state and a slate of Democratic electors was certified. Eleven of them filed a motion Tuesday to quash their subpoenas, calling them “unreasonable and oppressive.”

Also Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, agreed to file any challenges to a subpoena in the investigation in either state superior court or federal court in Georgia, according to a court filing. He had previously filed a motion in federal court in South Carolina trying to stop any subpoena from being issued to him there on behalf of the prosecutor in Georgia.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis last year opened a criminal investigation “into attempts to influence the administration of the 2020 Georgia General Election.” A special grand jury with subpoena power was seated in May at her request. In court filings earlier this month, she alleged “a multi-state, coordinated plan by the Trump Campaign to influence the results of the November 2020 election in Georgia and elsewhere.”

Willis’ office declined to comment Tuesday on the motion to quash the subpoenas.

A lawyer for Willis’s office said in a court filing Tuesday that each of the 16 people who signed the false elector certificate has received a letter saying they are targets of the investigation and that their testimony before the special grand jury is required.

In the motion to quash the subpoenas, lawyers for 11 of the fake electors said that from mid-April through the end of June,Willis’s office had told them that they were considered witnesses, not subjects or targets of the investigation. For that reason, they had agreed to voluntary interviews with the investigative team, the motion says. Georgia Republican Party Chairman David Shafer and another of the fake electors appeared for interviews in late April.

On June 1, grand jury subpoenas were sent to all 11 of those fake electors. And on June 28, the district attorney’s office told their lawyers for the first time that their clients were considered targets, rather than witnesses, the motion says.

On Dec. 14, 2020, when Georgia’s official Democratic electors met to certify the state’s electoral votes for Biden, the fake Republican electors also met to certify a slate of electoral votes for Trump. They did that because there was a lawsuit challenging the election results pending at the time, and if a judge found that Trump had actually won their electoral slate would become valid, the motion says.

The district attorney’s office knew all that and properly labeled them witnesses, prompting them to agree to voluntary cooperation, the motion says.

“The abrupt, unsupportable, and public elevation of all eleven nominee electors’ status wrongfully converted them from witnesses who were cooperating voluntarily and prepared to testify in the Grand Jury to persecuted targets of it,” the motion says. As a result, their lawyers advised them to invoke their federal and state rights protecting them against self-incrimination, and they “reluctantly” accepted that advice, the motion says.

Their lawyersassert that the change in status from witnesses to targets was based on “an improper desire to force them to publicly invoke their rights as, at best, a publicity stunt.” Therefore, they should be excused from appearing before the special grand jury, the motion says.

The motion asks Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney, who’s overseeing the special grand jury to excuse the 11 electors from appearing before the panel. It also asks him to look into Willis’ actions “indicating the improper politicization of this investigatory process.”

And it asks him to grant a motion filed Friday by state Sen. Burt Jones seeking to remove Willis and her office from the investigation.

Japan's government is likely to appoint academic Kazuo Ueda as the next Bank of Japan governor when Haruhiko Kuroda’s second term ends in April, a surprise choice that could finally align the country with other major economies in raising interest rates. “Regardless of who takes over, we think the wage and inflation dynamics at play mean the current policy stance has likely run its course,” BlackRock said, noting that policy changes could include the BOJ widening its band on the 10-year bond yield target again, or abandoning yield curve control. The implications are likely to be global and “we see the jolt from a BOJ policy shift as another driver of higher term premium, or the compensation investors demand for holding long-term government bonds,” BlackRock said, adding that the risk of further global yields increases could dampen global risk sentiment.

 

Monetary policy and Japan’s economic sensitivity to slowdowns in other major economies spurred the downgrade, BlackRock said. "Declining earnings growth estimates already reflect some risks from slowing growth –we expect Japan’s export sector to suffer,” it added.

Michigan Gov. Whitmer Slams DeSantis' Governing Style

 

Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Sunday that Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis' governing style in Florida is "incredibly destructive."

 

In an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union," Whitmer called out DeSantis for waging culture wars. DeSantis has ushered in legislation to prohibit classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade; and he has declared his stance against teachings of critical race theory, and diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.

 

"I don't really know Ron DeSantis, so it's hard for me to say anything real substantive," Whitmer said. "I'll say this: When I took my oath of office, I took an oath to be the governor for all of the people of Michigan. I don't wage culture wars; I fight culture wars, because I'm focused on solving problems.

 

"I think it's incredibly destructive when people just try to pit others against one another, stoke fear. I think that's a really destructive way to lead."

 

Whitmer and DeSantis won reelection in November by wide margins in states that usually have competitive gubernatorial races. DeSantis is considered a possible candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, although he has yet to declare his intentions. Whitmer said she has no intention to run and will back President Joe Biden, should he chose to run again.

 

Without addressing DeSantis directly, Whitmer said she doesn't like politicians who use fear and misinformation to advance their political agenda.

 

"I think that there are people who are out there that stoke fear and anger and misinformation to help themselves politically," she said. "I'm not saying who I think falls into that category. I'm just saying that's not how I operate. And every governor takes an oath to serve all the people in their state, whether they voted for them or not. And that's what should drive every decision — whether it's the budget you write, to the bills that you sign into law, to the rhetoric that you use: the people you share stages with."

One-hundred fifty aftershocks of a devastating earthquake, the second larger that the first, without the existence of an epicenter, the area being artificially stimulated, geological weapons having existed for a very long time being used so far withiout causing too many casualties, probably for experiments. But, ten seconds before the occurence of the so-called earthquake, the Turks closed those pipelines. Five days before the occurrence, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a travel warning for Romanian citizens in Turkey altough there was no danger, as did other countries. By killing people, they served their interests. The maps shown on all the television channels show that there was no epicenter, but a line with thousands of earthquakes.

The Turkish secret services are investigating a possible “criminal intervention” (read an involvement of another state in triggering the first earthquake). What followed later being a chain reaction after the destabilization of the tectonic plates in the region. It is very clear that President Erdogon was punished for his courage, dignity and honor and for his closeness to the Russian Federation, infact a position of neutrality and mediation for peace. In addition, it is desired to divert people’s attention from Ukraine where representatives of many countries have already begun to shout against the despotism and orders given by President Zelinsky as if he is ruling the world and someone is obliged to send weapons and participate in his war. In a war where he sacrificed his own people and destroyed his entire country. Anyone who speaks of peace is put on a pole of infamy and attacked from all sides. This is what happened in Romania when I started the unique initiative, “Neutrality for Romania, The Peace From Bucharest”. They all rushed at me, although now, after one year of war, almost all of them say everything that I said and supported from the beginning, claiming now they are the owners of these ideas. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has documented the release or threat of release of

hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants into the environment from the East Palestine

Train Derailment Site (the Site) located in East Palestine, Ohio (Latitude: 40.8360864 o N,

Longitude: -80.5215884o W). On February 3, 2023, at approximately 8:55 PM EST, a Norfolk

Southern train comprised of roughly 150 rail cars derailed. Approximately 20 rail cars were

listed as carrying hazardous materials. Cars containing vinyl chloride, butyl acrylate, ethylhexyl

acrylate, and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether are known to have been and continue to be

released to the air, surface soils, and surface waters

Based on the information collected during and following the incident that occurred on February

3, 2023, at approximately 8:55 PM EST in East Palestine, Ohio, EPA believes that Norfolk

Southern may be liable under Section 107(a) of CERCLA with respect to the East Palestine

Train Derailment Site, as a current or previous owner and/or operator of the Site. To date, EPA

has taken response actions at the Site under the authority of the Superfund Program. Below is a

brief description of the actions and observations taken by EPA at the Site to date:

  1. Conducted air monitoring around the scene of the incident, the surrounding community,

and residential air monitoring as part of the re-occupancy plan;

  1. Conducted air and water sampling;

  2. Made the following observations:

a. Materials released during the incident were observed and detected in samples

from Sulphur Run, Leslie Run, Bull Creek, North Fork Little Beaver Creek, Little

Beaver Creek, and the Ohio River.

b. Materials related to the incident were observed entering storm drains.

c. Multiple rail cars and tankers were observed derailed, breached, and/or on fire,

that included but not limited to the following materials:

i. Vinyl chloride

ii. Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether

iii. Ethylhexyl acrylate

iv. Isobutylene

v. Butyl acrylate.

d. Five rail car tankers of vinyl chloride were intentionally breached; the vinyl

chloride was diverted to an excavated trench and then burned off.

e. Areas of contaminated soil and free liquids were observed and potentially covered

and/or filled during reconstruction of the rail line including portions of the trench

/burn pit that was used for the open burn off of vinyl chloride

Zulock Case: Attorney for Accused Child Rapist Files Motion to Withdraw

Following the publication of Townhall's explosive four-part investigative series into an alleged suburban LGBTQ pedophile ring near Atlanta, the criminal defense attorney representing the activist gay couple currently facing multiple life sentences for the violent, serial sexual abuse of their adopted 9- and 11-year-old sons has moved to withdraw as legal counsel for one of the married men.

Georgia-based lawyer John E. Haldi filed a motion on Jan. 19 requesting permission to withdraw as 35-year-old accused child rapist Zachary Zulock's counsel of record ahead of a motion hearing scheduled for Wednesday morning. The four-page motion says that Zachary, who has entered a plea of not guilty, is now seeking another attorney as the case is expected to head to trial.

As of this week, Haldi remains the attorney for Zachary's husband, 33-year-old William Zulock, who maintains in a series of jailhouse calls exclusively shared with Townhall that he had "no idea" and "didn't know" about "a lot of the stuff [that] went on."

Zachary initially blamed William for initiating the "routine" alleged child sexual abuse when he was interrogated by police following the July 27 armed raid on the Zulock mansion, Walton County's District Attorney Randy McGinley told the court in September.

McGinley submitted his own motions to sever the Zulocks, who are jointly indicted as co-defendants, at trial and subsequently disqualify Haldi due to an apparent conflict of interest. If severed and limited immunity is granted, Zachary and William can be called upon to testify against each other from the witness stand. It's a move that has left the marital partners in shambles.

"Walton County can go to HELL" for asserting that "we can't have the same lawyer or some BS like that," William, reacting to McGinley's motions, texted a family member from a digital tablet supplied in pre-trial detainment, as Part 4 of Townhall's investigation covered. "Hopefully [Haldi can represent] still both of us," William wrote through an inmate-messaging application. "It would be no point in having two lawyers doing the same thing […] I think its the DA trying to part us from our lawyer," he added.

Haldi informed Zachary that the court is likely to rule in the chief prosecutor's favor, according to new text messages he sent from Barrow County Detention Center. "How do I decide between you two?" Haldi asked Zachary during his last visit to the lock-up.

William had first retained Haldi with a $10,000 down payment and now his side of the family is stuck incurring the services fees that have amassed to approximately $50,000, the relative, who is speaking out to provide a voice for the children, told Townhall.

Zachary has found a lawyer in the meantime who's willing to take on the case, but "he just can't get anyone to pay" for the legal representation, per another family member's knowledge. The wealthy couple's assets were swiftly seized after a judge signed off on a probable cause seizure warrant, and McGinley's office is additionally pursuing a civil complaint to forfeit the pair's property.

Wednesday's courtroom proceeding will take place before Judge Jeffrey L. Foster, the judge presiding over the Zulock case and all related matters, including the respective criminal cases for 27-year-old Hunter Lawless and 25-year-old Luis Vizcarro-Sanchez, whom the Zulocks allegedly solicited to engage in acts of prostitution with their older special-needs adopted son.

Two counts of human trafficking for sexual servitude have since been tacked on to the 17 other child sex crimes Zachary is accused of, according to an order requiring that he be temporarily transferred to Walton County Jail, where William is housed, for the upcoming court date. Both of the former adoptive fathers were already charged with two felony counts of prostituting a minor.

Norfolk Southern Railroad and the Environmental Protection Agency released a list of chemicals and hazardous materials on Sunday carried by a train that derailed in East Palestine, Ohio.

 

The derailment, which occurred on February 3, caused a fire that lasted several days. Officials decided to initiate a controlled release of the chemicals to mitigate the risk of an explosion; all residents within one mile of the crash site were told to evacuate, although they were permitted to return to their homes on February 8.

 

Norfolk Southern provided the EPA with a list of cars affected by the crash and the chemicals they were carrying. The company said all five cars containing vinyl chloride have been “stabilized” after the material was burned by crews, forming massive plumes of dark smoke that were visible in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

 

Vinyl chloride is described by the National Cancer Institute as a carcinogen linked to a rare form of liver cancer called hepatic angiosarcoma, as well as lymphoma, leukemia, and various forms of brain and lung cancers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration only permits exposure of one part per million during an industrial worker’s eight-hour shift.

 

“If a water supply is contaminated, vinyl chloride can enter household air when the water is used for showering, cooking, or laundry,” the agency said.

 

One train car containing ethylene glycol monobutyl ether currently has an “unknown status,” according to Norfolk Southern. The highly combustible liquid is used to manufacture paints and varnish; ingestion or skin contact can cause headache, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, according to a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A second car was carrying isobutylene, a flammable gas that can induce “dizziness, drowsiness, and unconsciousness” when moderate concentrations are inhaled, according to another report from the agency. Norfolk Southern said there are “no signs” of a breach for the car containing the substance.

 

A third train car was transporting ethylhexyl acrylate, a combustible liquid used to make paints and plastics. The amount of the chemical remaining in the car is “pending,” according to Norfolk Southern. The substance has been identified as a carcinogen in laboratory experiments, according to a report from the National Library of Medicine.

 

Government regulators and public utilities have expressed concern over chemicals released from the derailment. West Virginia American Water, the largest investor-owned water utility in the state of West Virginia, said in a statement that the company has not detected any change to raw water from its Ohio River intake but has “enhanced its treatment processes” as a “precautionary measure.” No drinking water advisories are currently in place for customers.

 

Federal investigators said an issue with a rail car axle caused the derailment. Footage obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette showed that the Norfolk Southern train had traveled more than 20 miles with a malfunctioning rail car axle. National Transportation Safety Board Member Michael Graham confirmed during a news conference that there were “preliminary indications of mechanical issues” for the axle, according to a report from CBS Pittsburgh.
