That's twice as many as were killed by the virus. In the US, the estimates are 670K Americans killed. Perhaps it's time to declare that the vaccines are a worldwide emergency?

I have said for a long time that the URF in VAERS is 41, and there are 16,300 excess US deaths in VAERS (subtracting 250 background deaths per year which gets reported into VAERS) which comes to 668K.

Adani Group companies have lost $110 billion in market cap amid a short seller attack.

 

Norway's massive sovereign wealth fund โ€“ the world's largest stock investor โ€” has sold all of its stakes in Adani Group companies.

 

"In the five weeks since year-end, we have further reduced our exposure in Adani companies significantly, and so today for all intents and purposes we have no exposure left," said Christopher Wright, the fund's head of ESG risk monitoring at a Thursday press conference.

 

The fund โ€” which manages assets worth $1.4 trillion โ€” held stakes in Adani Total Gas, Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone, and Adani Green Energy at the end of 2022. Since the start of 2023, it has sold stakes worth just over $200 million in these companies, said Wright.

 

"We have monitored the Adani group companies for many years as part of our monitoring processes. Corporate governance has formed part of this monitoring, alongside many other ESG topics," he added.

 

Adani Group companies have come under tremendous pressure ever since US short seller Hindenburg Research released a scathing report on January 24 alleging a "brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme" at the conglomerate.

 

The Adani Group denied the allegations, but shares of seven of its companies listed in India have taken a beating, losing about $110 billion in market cap, according to the latest Reuters calculations.

 

But the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund had started shedding its stake in the Adani Group companies since 2014 โ€” well before the recent selloff.

 

Wright said the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund has divested from six Adani Group-linked companies, primarily for "reasons linked to handling environmental risks."

 

The Adani Group did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

 

Shares of most Adani Group companies show mixed swings in early trade on Friday. Shares of the conglomerate's flagship company, Adani Enterprises, were up 1.1% after shedding about half their market value this year so far.

Facebook parent company Meta has removed the Azov Regiment, a controversial unit within the Ukrainian National Guard with alleged far-right political leanings, from its list of dangerous individuals and organizations. The move, first reported by The Kyiv Independent, means members of the unit can now create Facebook and Instagram accounts and post without Meta automatically flagging and removing their content. Additionally, unaffiliated users can praise the Azov Regiment, provided they abide by the companyโ€™s Community Standards.

โ€œThe war in Ukraine has meant changing circumstances in many areas and it has become clear that the Azov Regiment does not meet our strict criteria for designation as a dangerous organization,โ€ a company spokesperson told The Kyiv Independent. Meta did not immediately respond to Engadgetโ€™s comment request.

Sharing more information on the policy change, Meta told The Washington Post it recently began to view the Azov Regiment as a separate entity from other groups associated with the far-right nationalist Azov Movement. Specifically, the company pointed to Ukraine's National Corp political party and founder Andriy Biletsky, noting theyโ€™re still on its list of dangerous individuals and organizations. โ€œHate speech, hate symbols, calls for violence and any other content which violates our Community Standards are still banned, and we will remove this content if we find it,โ€ Meta said.

The Azov Regiment was founded in 2014 by Biletsky following Russiaโ€™s annexation of Crimea and the start of the Donbas War that same year. Before the unit was integrated into Ukraineโ€™s National Guard in November 2014, it was controversial for its adherence to neo-Nazi ideology. In 2015, a spokesperson for the Azov Regiment said 10 to 20 percent of the unitโ€™s recruits were self-professed Nazis. At the start of the 2022 conflict, Ukrainian officials said the Azov Regiment still had some extremists among its ranks but claimed the unit had largely become depoliticized. During the months-long siege of Mariupol, the Azov Regiment played a prominent role in the cityโ€™s defense. Russia captured many of the battalionโ€™s fighters at the end of the battle.

The change underscores just how much Metaโ€™s content moderation policies have changed since the start of Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine. Partway through last year, the company began temporarily allowing people in Ukraine and a handful of other countries to call for violence against Russian soldiers. After the decision created controversy, Meta said it would turn to the Oversight Board for policy guidance, a request the company later withdrew, citing โ€œongoing safety and security concernsโ€ related to the war.

German chancellorโ€™s party suffers historic defeat

The Social Democrats slumped to a resounding loss at the hands of theChristian Democratic Union in Berlin

 

Germanyโ€™s ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD) has lost the election for Berlinโ€™s city parliament for thefirst time in nearly 25 years. The defeat comes as the nation endures record-high inflation coupled with an energy crisis.

 

The repeat election in Berlin was called after Germanyโ€™s top court ruledlast year that the September 2021 vote was invalid due to a number of irregularities.

 

According to preliminary results shared by broadcasters ARD and ZDF, the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received 28.2% of the vote on Sunday โ€“ a nearly 10-point increase from 2021.

 

The SPD, which counts German Chancellor Olaf Scholz among its members, came second with 18.4%, just 105 votes ahead of the Greens, who also received 18.4%. The Left Party (Die Linke) earned 12.2%, while the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) came in fifth with 9.1%.

 

The results mean that Berlin Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) loses her seat in parliament to the CDUโ€™s Olaf Schenk. The SPD has continuously held the mayoral post since 2001.

ANON shocked to read about this fire this morning.

ANON built/operated one of the buildings/operations at this location many years ago and has personal knowledge of the interior of the buildings, including the ones described on fire. The amount of garbage processed and recycled is beyond most people's comprehension.

 

Initial sort of garbage being dumped off is thorough. The pedastle crane operators dig thru carefully looking for anything that could cause or fire or an explosion. I remember they missed an item once, it exploded and blew a hole in the roof. Garbage is mechanically sorted in the areas on fire, non-recycleables go one way to be burned as fuel to make electricity (similar design to a NatGas facility) and the recycleables ferrous and non-ferrous head out two other directions.

 

The facility makes enough electricity to power the City of Hialeah.

 

ANON knows how long it took to build out our facility, and the parts on fire are much bigger and more complex. Impact on garbage in the whole county. Impact on landfills. But the landfills when ANON was there sent their garbage up to the Res. Rec. Plant for recycling also.

 

ANON can't help but wonder if this was sabotage, given what is going on in other fires across the country. Disrupt the food supply. Disrupt energy supply. Disrupt garbage pickup, althought the facility going in flames is more about disrupt the energy supply, me thinksโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ..

The organizers claim that some 10,000 people protested against sending weapons to Ukraine

 

A major rally against the membership of France in NATO and the supply of weapons to Ukraine took place in Paris on Sunday.

 

Florian Philippot, the head of the right-wing Les Patriotes party, which organized the march, claimed that it had gathered some 10,000 people and was the largest such protest to date. He said 25 smaller anti-NATO rallies were held elsewhere across France on the same day.

 

Videos from the French capital did capture a significant crowd of at least several thousand people, carrying French national flags and a large banner reading: โ€œFor peace.โ€

 

The crowd chanted slogans, including โ€œNo planes, no tanks, no missiles for Ukraine,โ€ โ€œLetโ€™s get out of NATO,โ€ โ€œMacron, we donโ€™t want your war,โ€ and โ€œNo to World War IIIโ€among others.

Trade is booming as military tensions increase, where is all this headed?

These are interesting times. At a time when everyone is discussing another political escalation between Washington and Beijing (see the balloon over American territory and the cancellation of Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit), theUS Bureau of Statistics has reported a record trade turnover between the two countries. In 2022, it exceeded $690 billion.

 

It is time to get used to paradoxes. To describe contemporary processes, derivatives of the term "hybrid" (something derived from the crossing of different breeds, varieties, species) are often used. So why shouldn't normal economic logic be combined with contradictory motives of geopolitical rivalry?

 

However, the question is: How long can this coexistence last?

 

US-China relations are one of the most interesting phenomena of the last half century. Last year marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Richard Nixon-Henry Kissinger U-turn, when the United States recognized Communist China, which had previously been a symbol of red radicalism. There had been no reform at all in Beijing, unless you count the Cultural Revolution, which was still raging. In a Washington bereft of today's obsession with โ€œvalues,โ€ they thought: If Maoist China is in opposition to Brezhnev's USSR, why not join forces?

 

It would be an exaggeration to say that Sino-American normalization decided the outcome of the Cold War in favour of the US, but it certainly made the Soviet Union's position much more difficult.

 

However the convergence of geopolitical interests at that time was not matched by economic interaction - Washington and Beijing were in different universes. It was only after Mao's death that the Chinese miracle happened - the world's then second-most important socialist country embarked on a market transformation.

 

The US-China political understanding proved beneficial - America became the Asian countryโ€™s caring and gentle guide through the capitalist jungle. The economic cooperation that began at the turn of the 1980s turned into a financial and industrial symbiosis in the early 21st century. More importantly, it became the backbone of the global economy as it emerged at the end of the century.

 

Since then, as Beijingโ€™s rise continued, the question of potential conflict with the US, while ever-present, was not pushed too hard. On the one hand, Americans did not believe that impressive growth rates would make China an equal in the foreseeable future. On the other hand, for a long time (almost until the 2010s), American intellectual discussion was dominated by the view that as capitalist transformation progressed and the middle class grew, the Chinese political system would turn towards and align with its Western โ€œinspiration.โ€

 

In other words, they expected something like Japan - with its own peculiarities, but generally understandable and loyal to US political structures. The fact that American troops were stationed in Japan and South Korea when each of those countries โ€˜transformedโ€™, and that the whole process took place under external control, was considered important but not decisiveโ€ฆ

In China, they believed, it will work the same way, but just take longer.

 

The past decade has seen a line drawn in the sand. Xi Jinping's rise to the top of the party and the state has shown conclusively that China is heading in the wrong direction from Washingtonโ€™s point of view. And Donald Trump has legitimized the blatantly anti-Chinese course that Barack Obama had already implicitly pursued. Now, for the first time in forty years, political incompatibility has come into conflict with economic interdependence.

 

All current strategic planning in the United States is based on an imminent confrontation with China in the coming years, or perhaps decades. There is a bipartisan consensus on this, and these scenarios are discussed openly and frankly. Taiwan, which, if Biden is to be believed, the US intends to defend at all costs from absorption by the mainland, is seen as a pretext for a direct clash.

 

It is noteworthy that the recognition of Maoist China actually began with a deal on Taiwan - Washington would not question the unity of the country under Beijing, and the latter would take no steps to implement unification in practice. Both sides committed themselves to the ambiguous restraint that has been in place for decades. However, now the framework is bursting at the seams, and itโ€™s fair to say that itโ€™s the Americans who were first the abandon the magic formula.

 

At the same time, the US is imposing restrictions on the Chinese economy - targeting its goods and companies. Some of these measures are commercial and protectionist, but the majority are political and strategic. The aim is to slow down and ideally block technological development. This is paired to efforts to militarize the entire region and increase the armed presence of the United States and its allies there.

 

Yet, against this backdrop, trade is growing and the benefits of cooperation remain strong=. And there even seems to have been a softening, at the end of last year, which some cheerfully interpreted as a return to pragmatism. Blinken's visit to Beijing this week was supposed to cement this. But then came the balloon. A seemingly trivial event, but enough to derail the whole thing.

 

What did the balloon mean - was it a signal or an accident? What difference does it make in a hybrid age?

The whole "bombshell" photo of DeSantis with the young girls was a futile and, quite frankly, pathetic attempt to smear him. Trump shouldn't have done that and it actually reflects more poorly on him than it does on DeSantis. Not to mention how richly ironic it is/was that Trump would dare to try and smear some one for posing for a picture with young girls.

 

The only thing the photo of DeSantis shows, without further validated context, is a young teacher holding a beer and posing with his students. Not exactly Pizzagate.

WASHINGTON โ€” It became a regular litany of grievances from President Donald J. Trump and his supporters: The investigation into his 2016 campaignโ€™s ties to Russia was a witch hunt, they maintained, that had been opened without any solid basis, went on too long and found no proof of collusion.

Egged on by Mr. Trump, Attorney General William P. Barr set out in 2019 to dig into their shared theory that the Russia investigation likely stemmed from a conspiracy by intelligence or law enforcement agencies. To lead the inquiry, Mr. Barr turned to a hard-nosed prosecutor named John H. Durham, and later granted him special counsel status to carry on after Mr. Trump left office.

But after almost four years โ€” far longer than the Russia investigation itself โ€” Mr. Durhamโ€™s work is coming to an end without uncovering anything like the deep state plot alleged by Mr. Trump and suspected by Mr. Barr.

Moreover, a monthslong review by The New York Times found that the main thrust of the Durham inquiry was marked by some of the very same flaws โ€” including a strained justification for opening it and its role in fueling partisan conspiracy theories that would never be charged in court โ€” that Trump allies claim characterized the Russia investigation.

Interviews by The Times with more than a dozen current and former officials have revealed an array of previously unreported episodes that show how the Durham inquiry became roiled by internal dissent and ethical disputes as it went unsuccessfully down one path after another even as Mr. Trump and Mr. Barr promoted a misleading narrative of its progress.

Now, as Mr. Durham works on a final report, the interviews by The Times provide new details of how he and Mr. Barr sought to recast the scrutiny of the 2016 Trump campaignโ€™s myriad if murky links to Russia as unjustified and itself a crime.

Mr. Barr, Mr. Durham and Ms. Dannehy declined to comment. The current and former officials who discussed the investigation all spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the legal, political and intelligence sensitivities surrounding the topic.

A year into the Durham inquiry, Mr. Barr declared that the attempt โ€œto get to the bottom of what happenedโ€ in 2016 โ€œcannot be, and it will not be, a tit-for-tat exercise. We are not going to lower the standards just to achieve a result.โ€

But Robert Luskin, a criminal defense lawyer and former Justice Department prosecutor who represented two witnesses Mr. Durham interviewed, said that he had a hard time squaring Mr. Durhamโ€™s prior reputation as an independent-minded straight shooter with his end-of-career conduct as Mr. Barrโ€™s special counsel.

Comet ZTF and Mars

 

No, Comet ZTF is not going to hit Mars. Nicknamed the Green Comet for its bright green coma, C/2022 E3 (ZTF) did, however, pass almost in front of the much-more distant planet a few days ago, very near in time to when the featured picture was taken. The two sky icons were here captured behind a famous Earth icon โ€“ the Matterhorn, a mountain in the Italian Alps with a picturesque peak. Both the foreground and background images were taken on the same evening by the same camera and from the same location. The comet's white dust tail is visible to the right of the green coma, while the light blue ion tail trails towards the top of the image. Orange Mars is well in front of the numerous background stars as well as the dark nebula Barnard 22 to its lower right. Although Mars remains visible in the evening sky for the next few months, Comet ZTF has already begun to fade as it returns to the outer Solar System.

What exactly can he do about the homeowner's insurance rates. I am not familiar with how the state of Florida ineracts with and/or regulates insurance rates. Maybe they don't, i don't know. In any case, Florida insurance rates are probably higher than most other states simply because of the greater potential for widespread and devastating hurricane damages. Hi blood sugar leads to high cholesterol, heart disease etc. Right?

 

So what causes high blood sugar?

 

Did an experiment a few years ago w/ blood glucose monitor kit.

 

Fast 10 hours.

Have coffee w/ artificial sweetener, no food. Dang blood "sugar" spiked more and more w/each cup of coffee (no food).

Next day, Repeat experiment w/white granular sugar, 8 cups coffee (1 tsp sugar each) glucose monitor finally starts to move up a Next day, repeat, but use honey from my bee hives. Glucose barely budged.

 

Next experiment, test each veggie food after a 12 hr fast. Found a lot of surprisesโ€ฆ. 1/2 medium potato glucose rises a bit, but back down an hour later. Whole medium potato, glucose rises, take 2 hours to come down.

Ok, somewhat expected that.

 

But how about zucchini? Same as a potato!!

Ditto with a lot of veggies.

 

So if you have a combo of non-meat for a mealโ€ฆ..

 

Say rice, beans, yellow squash/zucchini, maybe a salad, whateverโ€ฆ. point is a bunch of veggies and grainsโ€ฆ. guess what happens to your blood sugar? Which in turn if raised for too long increases cholestrol, which in turnโ€ฆ.

And you're hungry a few hours laterโ€ฆ.

 

Repeat experiment after fasting.

3 fried eggs, 2 strips of bacon (or sausage).

Glucose doesn't budge at all. And you don't get hungry real quick either.

HUBBLE CAPTURES THE START OF A NEW SPOKE SEASON AT SATURN

New images of Saturn from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope herald the start of the planet's "spoke season" surrounding its equinox, when enigmatic features appear across its rings. The cause of the spokes, as well as their seasonal variability, has yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.

 

Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun. The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable.

 

The suspected culprit for the spokes is the planet's variable magnetic field. Planetary magnetic fields interact with the solar wind, creating an electrically charged environment (on Earth, when those charged particles hit the atmosphere this is visible in the northern hemisphere as the aurora borealis, or northern lights). Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings.

 

The ring spokes were first observed by NASA's Voyager mission in the early 1980s. The transient, mysterious features can appear dark or light depending on the illumination and viewing angles.

 

"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturnโ€™s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.

 

Saturn's last equinox occurred in 2009, while NASA's Cassini spacecraft was orbiting the gas giant planet for close-up reconnaissance. With Cassini's mission completed in 2017, and the Voyager spacecrafts long gone, Hubble is continuing the work of long-term monitoring of changes on Saturn and the other outer planets.

 

"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season," Simon said.

 

While our solar system's other three gas giant planets also have ring systems, nothing compares to Saturn's prominent rings, making them a laboratory for studying spoke phenomena. Whether spokes could or do occur at other ringed planets is currently unknown. "It's a fascinating magic trick of nature we only see on Saturn โ€”for now at least," Simon said.

 

Hubble's OPAL program will add both visual and spectroscopic data, in wavelengths of light from ultraviolet to near-infrared, to the archive of Cassini observations. Scientists are anticipating putting these pieces together to get a more complete picture of the spoke phenomenon, and what it reveals about ring physics in general.
