Putin visits Russia-occupied Mariupol city in Ukraine

 

Vladimir Putin visited the Russia-occupied city of Mariupol in Ukraine on Sunday, reported news agency TASS.

 

Mariupol in Donetsk region was captured by Russian forces after a bloody battle in May last year and has remained under the control of Moscow’s fighters since.

 

The Russian president was seen driving a car around the city as he visited several districts.

 

He also made stops along the way and spoke to the residents, reported TASS news agency.

 

Mr Putin also met with the top brass leading his military operation in Ukraine, state media said today.

 

The leader, facing an arrest warrant for war crimes, also met with chief of the general staff Valery Gerasimov who is in charge of Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

 

The meeting took place at the Rostov-on-Don command post in southern Russia, reported TASS news agency.

 

This is the first such visit made by the Russian president, who launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February last year, to the country after the conflict erupted in Europe and led to displacement of millions, thousands of civilian deaths and several thousands being injured.

 

A day earlier, Mr Putin made a surprise visit to Crimea to mark the ninth anniversary of the Black Sea peninsula’s annexation from Ukraine.

 

His trip to the war-hit nation came a day after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant on charges of war crimes, alleging he is personally responsible for the abduction of children from Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.

 

In Sevastopol, Crimea’s largest city, Mr Putin met Moscow-installed governor Mikhail Razvozhaev, with whom he visited an art school and a children’s centre that are part of a project to develop a historical park on the site of an ancient Greek colony, Russian state news agencies said.

 

“Our president knows how to surprise. In a good sense. Today we were supposed to inaugurate a children’s art school. Everything was ready for a video conference and a report to the president via a special communication link. In the end, the president came personally. By car. He was at the wheel himself. On such a historic day, the president is always with Sevastopol and the people of Sevastopol. Our country has an incredible leader," governor Razvozhayev wrote on Telegram.

 

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, in a move most of the world denounced as illegal and which soured relations between Moscow and the West. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has said any peace settlement would involve Russia withdrawing from the peninsula as well as the regions it has occupied since last year.

Feb 9, 2023 … Jason Miller, a former top adviser to former President Donald Trump,

will rejoin Trump's campaign for his 2024 presidential run, Miller confirmed to CBS News Thursday.

 

Miller, who worked in a senior capacity in both Trump's 2016 and 2020 campaigns,

willstep away from his chief executive role at GETTR, the conservative social media platform, he disclosed.

 

Miller said he will serve as a senior adviser focused on strategy. Politico first reported the news.

 

"I will of course remain engaged with the GETTR platform and its user base in an emeritus position," Miller said in a statement."

The Fed's Cure Risks Being Worse Than the Disease

(Bloomberg Opinion) – The economic debate of the day centers on whether the cure of an economic shutdown is worse than the disease of the virus. Similarly, we need to ask if the cure of the Federal Reserve getting so deeply into corporate bonds, asset-backed securities, commercial paper, and exchange-traded funds is worse than the disease seizing financial markets. It may be.

 

In just these past few weeks, the Fed has cut rates by 150 basis points to near zero and run through its entire 2008 crisis handbook. That wasn’t enough to calm markets, though — so the central bank also announced $1 trillion a day in repurchase agreements and unlimited quantitative easing, which includes a hard-to-understand $625 billion of bond buying a week going forward. At this rate, the Fed will own two-thirds of the Treasury market in a year.

 

But it’s the alphabet soup of new programs that deserve special consideration, as they could have profound long-term consequences for the functioning of the Fed and the allocation of capital in financial markets. Specifically, these are:

 

CPFF (Commercial Paper Funding Facility) – buying commercial paper from the issuer. PMCCF (Primary Market Corporate Credit Facility) – buying corporate bonds from the issuer. TALF (Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility) – funding backstop for asset-backed securities. SMCCF (Secondary Market Corporate Credit Facility) – buying corporate bonds and bond ETFs in the secondary market. MSBLP (Main Street Business Lending Program) – Details are to come, but it will lend to eligible small and medium-size businesses, complementing efforts by the Small Business Association.

 

To put it bluntly, the Fed isn’t allowed to do any of this. The central bank is only allowed to purchase or lend against securities that have government guarantee. This includes Treasury securities, agency mortgage-backed securities and the debt issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. An argument can be made that can also include municipal securities, but nothing in the laundry list above.

 

So how can they do this? The Fed will finance a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for each acronym to conduct these operations. The Treasury, using the Exchange Stabilization Fund, will make an equity investment in each SPV and be in a “first loss” position. What does this mean? In essence, the Treasury, not the Fed, is buying all these securities and backstopping of loans; the Fed is acting as banker and providing financing. The Fed hired BlackRock Inc. to purchase these securities and handle the administration of the SPVs on behalf of the owner, the Treasury.

 

In other words, the federal government is nationalizing large swaths of the financial markets. The Fed is providing the money to do it. BlackRock will be doing the trades.

 

This scheme essentially merges the Fed and Treasury into one organization. So, meet your new Fed chairman, Donald J. Trump.

There have been some very interesting political developments in Scotland over the past 3 weeks. In the space of 3 weeks the most senior figures in Government and the leading political party, the Scottish National Party (SNP) have resigned.

 

It seems that the party have tried to fix the leadership election and the UK intelligence services, GCHQ, have said there is a credible threat that 'Russian hackers' could interfere with the voting systems and have stepped in to protect the integrity of the process.

What’s absolutely weird about the weather lady collapsing is, the News lady says, as if it funny, “oooh Not Again, Not Again”, as if it happens all the time. How many times has this lady fainted? Why would the station allow this to happen again? Also the completely heartless reaction, like it was a common occurrence and funny. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is expected to bring felony charges against former President Donald Trump next week related to payments made in 2016 to settle rumors of an extramarital affair. The charges, which Bragg upgraded from a misdemeanor class, stand in stark contrast to the prosecutor’s history of reducing charges against the majority of cases on his watch. Since taking office last year, DA Bragg has downgraded approximately 52 percent of all cases brought before his office. A significant portion of these cases involved reducing felony charges to misdemeanors. Under Bragg’s predecessor, less than 40 percent of cases were comprised of similar downgrades.

On her MSNBC show this morning, Katie Phang and two lawyer guests all suggested that Trump's Truth Social post calling on people, in response to his apparently imminent arrest, to "Protest, Take Our Nation Back," could be the basis for additional criminal charges against him.

Are the MSNBC folks aware that not long ago, another prominent politician repeatedly used a virtually identical phrase? Indeed, that politician actually gave a speech entitled, "Taking Our Country Back," employing that phrase no fewer than six times in the course of remarks. The speech repeatedly called on people to "fight!"

Even more shocking, the speaker bragged to the audience, "I come to you with bloody knuckles" after 120 days of fighting the Trump administration.

Bloody knuckles? Such violent imagery . . . Kamala Harris! Yes, it was Harris who, as a US senator, gave that speech to the California Democrat Convention, just two years before launching her ill-fated, short-lived quest for the White House.

FBI Is Now A 'Weaponized Apparatchik' Of The Presidential Administration: Whistleblower

 

There’s a growing divide between the rank-and-file officers of the FBI and upper management, according to FBI agent-turned-whistleblower Steve Friend, and it’s those at the top who are pushing a political agenda.

 

“I spent close to nine years in the FBI, spent a good chunk of my time just keeping my head down and working the cases in front of me,” Friend noted in a March 14 interview with NTD News, The Epoch Times’ sister outlet.

 

“There are a lot of agents that sort of share that sentiment and just want to drive the mission forward. Unfortunately, there’s a big disconnect between the rank-and-file and the management class, and as you climb that ladder, it’s tending to become more and more political.”

 

The evidence, Friend said, could be seen in the bureau’s disparate treatment of pro-life activists—like Mark Houck, whose home was raided by the FBI over an altercation outside of a Planned Parenthood—and pro-abortion activists, like those who protested outside of Supreme Court justices’ homes and were never investigated.

 

“I think there’s an argument to be made that the FBI has now just become a weaponized apparatchik of the presidential administration,” he added, holding that public trust in the agency has diminished largely as a result of the perception of political bias.

 

Blowing the Whistle

Friend—now a senior fellow at the Center for Renewing America—previously worked as a special agent in the FBI’s Jacksonville, Florida, office, but was suspended from the agency after he came forward last September with concerns about how the bureau was handling child sexual abuse cases and allegations that cases were being inappropriately assigned.

 

Friend had also objected to the FBI’s use of SWAT teams to arrest individuals suspected of committing misdemeanors during the Jan. 6 Capitol breach.

 

According to a March 6 letter (pdf) written by whistleblower organization Empower Oversight, Friend was informed in December by the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) that, “after careful consideration,” the OIG had decided against opening an investigation into his allegations.

 

However, on March 16, DOJ Assistant Inspector General Sean O’Neill responded that DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz “still intends to schedule an interview with Mr. Friend regarding his disclosures.”

 

Views on Jan. 6

Prior to his suspension, Friend was involved in investigations relating to the Jan. 6 Capitol breach—an incident he said could only be fully understood through “radical transparency.”

 

“I’m hoping that this slow drip of surveillance footage is just eventually abandoned, and we just get the whole amount of it,” he said, alluding to the recent exposés aired by Fox News’ Tucker Carlson.

 

“There’s no reason why it should be leaked out slowly because that just gives cannon fodder to both sides to accuse the other of cherry-picking their information.”

 

As for his views on the events of that day, Friend said he thought the incident involved a “mixed bag” of people who did some “deplorable and abhorrent” things and should be held accountable and those who were just there to exercise their First Amendment rights.

The tabled Penal Law Proposal (Amendment – Prohibition of Solicitation for Religious Conversion) 2023-2023’ effectively forbids spreading the Gospel among Jews.

“Who persuades a person, directly, digitally, by direct mail, or online, to convert his religion, his sentence is one-year imprisonment, and if the person was a minor, his sentence is two years imprisonment,” says a section of the law.

Israeli legislators Moshe Gafni and Yaakov Asher, who initiated the changes, told the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, that they were concerned about Christian missionaries.

“In recent times, the attempts of missionary bodies, mainly Christian ones, to persuade people to convert have increased,” they wrote in a letter to the Knesset speaker and deputies.

“Sometimes these attempts do not involve the promise of money or material favors, and therefore are not prohibited according to the existing law. But their many negative consequences, including mental damage, require the intervention of the legislator,” the two politicians added to the document seen by Worthy News.

‘WEAKER STRATA’

The legislators claimed that “attempts to get people to convert their religion focus on members of the weaker strata, who due to their socio-economic status are more easily subjected to attempts at persuasion of this kind.”

Therefore, “it is proposed that in addition to the prohibition of providing benefits as an enticement to convert, the very act of soliciting to convert when it is done directly to a person will also be prohibited,” they explained.

Besides the proposed prison terms for those “enticing” adults or minors, the legislators also want to increase “the punishment applicable to those who conduct a religious conversion ceremony of a minor.”

Such a person should receive “two years in prison, instead of six months, as stipulated today,” Gafni and Asher argued.

Religious conversions matter in Israel as the country grants Jewish people certain immigration rights under the Law of Return.

RABBINATE POWERFUL

The law gives Jews worldwide ― including people who convert to Judaism ― the right to live in Israel and gain citizenship.

Liberal-leaning strains of Judaism have clashed with Israel’s chief rabbinate, which maintains jurisdiction over religious rituals, such as marriage and conversions.

The rabbinate, controlled by strictly observant Jewish leaders, doesn’t recognize the validity of Reform and Conservative Judaism.

Yet, Israel’s highest court ruled two years ago that people who convert to the Reform and Conservative movements of Judaism in Israel are “Jewish under the law and are entitled to Israeli citizenship.

Former President Donald Trump on Saturday shocked the world with an announcement that he expects to be arrested Tuesday in connection with an ongoing investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a case legal scholars have suggested has a questionable legal basis.

Such a charge would likely be based on Trump's labeling his reimbursement of Cohen as a legal expense.

 

Trump's attorney, Joe Tacopina has argued that Trump's payment to Cohen was in fact a legitimate legal fee. Trump, he noted, never directly paid Daniels any money. Rather, he only paid his own lawyer for services rendered, i.e. legal fees.

 

"The payments were made to a lawyer, not to Stormy Daniels," Tacopina said last week on MSNBC. "The payments were made to Donald Trump's lawyer, which would be considered legal fees. Michael Cohen … was his lawyer at the time and advised him that this was the proper way to do this to protect himself and his family from embarrassment. It's as simple as that."

 

The host then argued that the money Trump paid to Cohen went to Stormy Daniels and was therefore not a legal fee.

 

"It went to Stormy Daniels from Michael Cohen," the Trump attorney countered. "He decided he was going to do it this way and asked for the reimbursement of what he billed as legal fees. That is not a crime."

 

Ordinarily, such a charge would be considered a misdemeanor subject to a two-year statute of limitation, meaning Bragg cannot pursue it solely on this basis. Bragg does, however, have the discretion to convert it into a Class E felony, if he can prove that Trump's alleged "intent to defraud involved further criminal intent to either hide the commission of another crime or to assist in the commission of that other crime," according to Saland Law.

 

In order to meet even the threshhold standard for prosecution, Bragg would therefore need to argue that Trump falsified business records concealing his reported "hush money" payment to Daniels with the intent to conceal another crime.

 

As a hush money payment to ensure silence about an affair would not be illegal in and of itself, Bragg's case would likely hinge on a possible campaign finance violation. If Cohen's payment to Daniels constituted an illegal campaign contribution, then the falsification of records would have concealed an underlying crime, providing legal predicate for a Class E felony charge of first degree falsifying business records. Trump would face up to four years in prison if convicted on the charge.
