What we can VERIFY about a photo that goes viral after nearly every mass shooting in America

 

The ‘Sam Hyde shooter meme’ has been shared online after mass shootings for years. We VERIFY where it came from and why it spread after tragedies.

 

Since at least 2015, photos of comedian Sam Hyde have appeared online after various mass shootings across the country.

 

After a mass shooting at a Christmas party in San Bernardino, Calif., an image of Hyde holding an assault-style rifle appeared on message boards with false claims he was the attacker. Two years later, photos of Hyde were shared, along with more false claims that he was a shooter who attacked a church in Texas.

 

More recently, on March 27, a shooter opened fire at a small, private Christian school just south of downtown Nashville, Tenn. Six people were killed during the attack, and the shooter was killed by the police.

 

After the attack, a photo claiming to identify the shooter went viral on Twitter.

 

“BREAKING: Nashville Police have positively identified the corpse of the suspected Nashville Covenant School shooter as 31 year old Samantha Hyde,” a portion of one tweet said.

 

However, that person was not a shooter identified by the police in the Nashville attack. It was an edited photo of Hyde.

 

The photos have become so widely circulated after attacks in the U.S., it’s now considered a meme, which is an image that is copied and spread rapidly by internet users, often with slight variations.

 

Here's what we can VERIFY about Hyde and the origins of this meme.

 

Sam Hyde is a real person and hasn’t been the suspect in any mass shootings. However, his image has been shared repeatedly on social media in the immediate aftermath of a high-profile attack.

 

Many of the viral posts claiming Hyde is the “lone white gunman” or known suspect in a number of shootings across the U.S. originated on the anonymous online messaging board, 4chan. The image is a screenshot from one of Hyde’s YouTube videos from his channel, Million Dollar Extreme. Million Dollar Extreme was removed from YouTube in 2018 for violating community guidelines.

 

People who use the 4chan message board often do so with a goal to mislead or trick people into believing and sharing false information during times of crisis or breaking news. Hyde, a comedian and supporter of alt-right beliefs, is a popular figure on the message board.

 

Ciaran O’Connor, an analyst with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, told VERIFY the goal of the posts featuring Hyde is to misinform the media.

Who is James Nott? Kentucky man used skulls and spinal cords to decorate home as FBI busts multistate trade in human remains

 

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY: Shocking revelations have emerged as a Bullitt County man, James Nott, was arrested on Tuesday, July 11, after FBI agents discovered dozens of human remains, including skulls, in his Mt Washington home. The arrest came following an investigation that began last year, andNott's alleged involvement in the multistate and international trade of stolen body parts.

 

James Nott, 39, had been purchasing human remains online under the alias "William Burke," a name that holds historical significance as it was used by a notorious serial killer active in Edinburgh, Scotland in the 1820s. Nott's public Facebook page contained recent posts offering human remains for sale, further adding to the disturbing nature of the case. The criminal complaint filed against Nott shed light on the illicit trade in which he was implicated, involving stolen body parts from the morgue at Harvard Medical School and a mortuary in Little Rock, Arkansas. The complaint alleged that Nott received these body parts from abroad and sold them within the United States, WDRB reported.

As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that Cedric Lodge, the morgue manager for Harvard Medical School's Anatomical Gift Program, was also implicated in the illegal trade. Lodge was accused of allowing unauthorized individuals access to the morgue, enabling them to personally select and purchase body parts without the knowledge or consent of the families and the school. The complaint further alleged that Lodge himself was involved in stealing parts from cadavers and selling them online.

 

Within this network of illegal activity, Nott communicated with Pauley via Facebook, using a pseudonym. The affidavit stated that Nott sent Pauley photos and videos of the human remains, and they discussed the sale and shipment of these items. Disturbingly, Pauley inquired about the price for a specific set of body parts. "How much for the couple you sent, plus the spines,” he asked, to which Nott provided a quote. Pauley responded, "Works for me," indicating his willingness to proceed with the purchase. Pauley, Lodge, and four others were reportedly charged in federal court in Pennsylvania with interstate transportation of stolen property and conspiracy, the Courier-Journal reported.

The FBI executed a search warrant on Tuesday at Nott's residence on Love Avenue, Mt Washington, where they made horrifying discoveries. During the search, an FBI agent asked Nott if anyone else was present in the apartment, to which he chillingly responded, "Only my dead friends." Around 40 human skulls, spinal cords, femurs, and hip bones were found throughout the apartment. The skulls were decorated and placed around the furniture, with one even adorned with a headscarf. Additionally, law enforcement discovered an AK-47 with loaded magazines, dummy grenades, body armor plates, and a loaded .38 special revolver. A bag from Harvard Medical School was also found in Nott's home.

• They don’t report how many years of emails or documents they stole from the various agencies?

• Nor are the mentioning all the federal agencies, perhaps military and and possible WH that were hacked.

It is worth noting that this is the third distinct task order that NASA has awarded to QCi, making it the second research center within NASA to subcontract with the company. QCi, through its wholly owned federal contracting subsidiary, QI Solutions, will be responsible for executing this project under the BAERI subcontract.

 

Over the course of the nine-month subcontract, QCi will deliver a compact system that has been programmed to efficiently process a significant volume of data. This system will be capable of operating independently for extended periods and will be designed to be powered by a 12-volt battery, consuming no more than 30 watts of power.

SALINE COUNTY, Ark. – A camp in Saline County meant to teach kids about the U.S. Constitution is raising some eyebrows following a new billboard going up to advertise it on I-30.

 

The organizer of the camp, Jennifer Lancaster, is President of the Saline County Republican Women. Lancaster said the camp has been going on in the area for a few years now, though for many on social media and in the county, they are just now learning about it.

 

“Anytime you stand for truth anytime you stand up for something, you are going to get stones thrown at you,” Lancaster said. “I am fine with taking those slings and arrows. They do not bother me.”

 

Micah Qualls is one of the citizens of Saline County that is concerned not only with the camp itself, but the billboard advertising it. She said her first concern is with the religious messaging coming along with the teaching.

 

“No where is the word ‘Jesus’ or ‘Christianity’ in the Constitution,” Qualls said.

 

Though Lancaster argued that it is the biblical principles in our nation’s founding documents, like the Declaration of Independence, that they are sharing with kids.

 

“Our founding fathers were all Christians, and they spoke about their faith openly,” Lancaster said.

 

Another concern Qualls mentioned is the lineup of speakers for the camp this year.

 

This includes Attorney General Tim Griffin, Former Governor Mike Huckabee, Sheriff Rodney Wright, Supreme Court Justice Barbara Webb, and Justice of the Peace Clint Chism.

 

“I think it is important to notice that all of our constitutional officers are republican,” Lancaster said. “All of our JPs in Saline County where we are from are republican, so naturally we’re going to find more republicans than democrats.”

 

Qualls said she feels those teaching our nation’s principles should be those who are academically trained to do so.

 

“I would not even bring politicians in to be my speakers,” Qualls said. “I would bring academics…people who are constitutional scholars.”

 

Qualls said as concerning as this camp seems to be, she does trust the students who are in it.

 

“The students tend to reject anything that does not feel right inside them, and when they get to college, they will learn.”

 

Lancaster said this is not the first time the camp has received pushback over the last few years, though it is growing every year. It is scheduled to begin later this month.

NASA has received the fleet of vehicles that will take Artemis crews on the final Earth-bound leg of their journey to the Moon before boarding their rocket and spacecraft.

 

Teams from manufacturer Canoo Technologies Inc. of Torrance, California, delivered three specially designed, fully electric, environmentally friendly crew transportation vehicles to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Tuesday, July 11. The zero-emission vehicles can carry four astronauts in their Orion crew survival system spacesuits, support personnel including a spacesuit technician, and provides room for specialized equipment for the drive to Launch Pad 39B ahead of Artemis missions to the Moon.

 

The new vehicles are customized to accommodate NASA’s unique specifications for Artemis missions while also paying homage to the legacy of the agency’s human spaceflight and space exploration efforts. Many aspects of the design, from the interior and exterior markings to the color of the vehicles to the wheel wells, were chosen by a creative team that included the Artemis launch director and representatives from NASA’s Astronaut Office based at Johnson Space Center in Houston. They provided insight from the conceptual phase throughout production. Canoo was awarded a contract in April 2022 to manufacture the vehicles.

 

“The collaboration between Canoo and our NASA representatives focused on the crews’ safety and comfort on the way to the pad ahead of their journey to the Moon,” said Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, NASA’s Artemis launch director. “I have no doubt everyone who sees these new vehicles will feel the same sense of pride I have for this next endeavor of crewed Artemis missions.”

 

Historically, during launch operations at Kennedy for NASA’s Apollo and Space Shuttle Programs, the earlier Astrovans were the primary means of transporting crews from the astronauts’ crew quarters in the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building to the launch pad. While the path to the pad may look similar, the ride to get there has changed with the times.

 

Ahead of Artemis II, the first crewed mission under Artemis that will send four astronauts around the Moon and bring them home, the fleet will be used for astronaut training exercises at the spaceport. The approximately 10-day flight will test NASA's foundational human deep space exploration capabilities, the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, for the first time with astronauts and will pave the way for lunar surface missions, including landing the first woman and first person of color on the Moon.

Top economist: Central bankers are planning CBDC currency implants ‘under your skin’

 

A central banker reportedly told economist Richard Werner there are plans to issue CBDCs that ‘look like a small grain of rice,’ to be implanted under the skin.

 

“You have to think of CDBCs as a control system [or a permit system], not a currency,” Werner explained, adding that the level of control would be such that our money would no longer be truly our own.

It’s a classic cinematic setup: A scrappy underdog challenges an undisputed champ and scores a surprise victory. But this particular movie plotline pits Hollywood’s studio system against a small film distributor in Provo, Utah.

 

And Angel Studios’ success in its release of the faith-forward drama “Sound of Freedom” last week has sparked talk of a game-changing movement among company executives and industry observers.

 

The film — formerly the property of 20th Century Fox and Walt Disney Studios — is projected to garner $40 million in its first week of theatrical release. Its distribution relied on word-of-mouth promotion and a grassroots social media campaign in which moviegoers were asked to “pay it forward” by purchasing tickets that others could claim.

 

“When you have something like faith-based crowdfunding for a demographic that often feels ignored or underserved by the industry, Angel Studios is hitting the sweet spot,” said screenwriter/producer Bradford Winters, whose series projects include the FX spy thriller “The Americans” and the HBO prison drama “Oz.”

 

But relying on its grassroots supporters to produce or promote faith-based films raises the stakes a bit, given that movies can have exponentially higher production and marketing costs. Movie critic Christian Toto, host of the “Hollywood in Toto” podcast, said the gambit might be what’s needed in an increasingly fragmented entertainment marketplace.

 

“We need new marketing techniques and new practices with Hollywood, as the marketplace changes and as new technologies emerge,” said Mr. Toto, a former feature writer for The Washington Times. “This seems like a rather practical and effective approach so far.” Still, Mr. Winters said the Angel Studios approach may work for a niche market but is unlikely to displace the established studio system.

 

“I don’t know if [it] would have the same success and impact” in other genres, he said.Angel Studios executives “know that they have a very eager, hungry audience willing to help the cause, and who probably feel very legitimized, validated, even empowered, knowing that whatever small or big contribution, you know, they’ve made to these projects helps get them made.”

 

That knowledge of its audience helped drive Angel Studios’ success in its release of “Sound of Freedom.” It opened last Friday and finished the weekend box office behind the new horror feature “Insidious: The Red Door” and the second-week run of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”

 

What’s telling is that itwas available on just 2,850 screens in North America, some 300 fewer than “Insidious” and 1,750 fewer than “Indiana Jones.”

 

Perhaps even more telling is the film’s subject matter: child sex trafficking. Jim Caviezel, portrays real-life former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard, who quit his agency’s task force on crimes against children…

 

Adam Holz, who directs the Plugged In media-and-culture website for Focus on the Family, notes thatDisney executives scuttled “Sound of Freedom” in 2019, one year after the mega studio acquired 20th Century Fox, which had already produced the film.

 

“Why did Disney not want to touch this?Because, obviously, they’re the ones who made that choice,” Mr. Holz said.

 

For Jared Geesey, vice president of global distribution for Angel Studios,the investors— those grassroots moviegoers — hold all the power in greenlighting movies and television shows, not Hollywood executives. “Our fundamental difference is that we are letting the fan decide the content that is created and comes to the market,” Mr. Geesey said.

 

“There’s no executive of Angel that can greenlight a project,” he said. “We think that the Hollywood gatekeeper model of choosing what content people ought to watch is brokenand doesn’t create the kinds of stories that align with people’s values, that they want to see.”

 

What’s more, thanks to “Angel Guild” members, who either send a monthly amount or choose to back a specific project. Mr. Toto says crowdfunding could expand into other categories before consumers tire of the approach.

 

“It seems like there are more and more success stories,” he said. “I’m sure there are lots of failures, too. But you’re seeing this in the comic book industry. You’re seeing this when comedians either use Patreon or other methods to support their craft.”…

‘Anime-loving fighters’ capture US-made Bradley vehicle

A Russian military squad draws national attention with a viral video of a frontline trophy

 

A Russian military unit has found itself in the media spotlight, after humorous videos of the soldiers capturing a US-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicle from the Ukrainian army went viral. Their reported interest in anime has further stirred up public interest.

 

One of the clips showed servicemen from the Kerch unit posing in front of an apparently intact piece of US-made weaponry, sarcastically thanking Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for delivering “this nice vehicle” to them. Another clip showed one of them making a face to the camera, with the trophy in the background, and saying: “There you go – glory to Russia!”

 

The footage appeared earlier in the week and was widely shared on Russian social networks, before making its way into the national media. As interest grew, some outlets reported that the fighters – all of whom volunteered to serve in the army – were also anime fans.

 

While Japanese animation art has a diverse global fanbase, it’s still viewed as a niche interest in Russia, relatively unknown to much of the public.

 

Public images shared on the messenger app Telegram by one of the squad members shows his keen interest in anime. FBI finds stolen human remains used as ‘decorations’ inside Mount Washington man’s home

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – When FBI agents served a federal search warrant at an apartment in Mount Washington, they discovered dozens of human bones inside, some of which were being used as furniture.

 

As many as 40 skulls were found during a raid at James William Nott’s home Tuesday morning on Love Avenue.

 

WAVE News Troubleshooters broke the story about the raid while continuing to confirm details about suspected human remains. That confirmation came Wednesday morning, hours before Nott was to have a detention hearing on his recent arrest.

 

According to the criminal complaint, Nott was part of a ring of purchasing and selling stolen human remains, some of which were tied back to the Harvard Medical scandal which the FBI also recently busted. A Harvard medical bag was found in Nott’s home.

Russia charges trans activist with treason for aiding Ukraine

The unnamed male faces charges of treason, according to the FSB, Russia’s Federal Security Service

 

Russia’s Federal Security Service, the FSB, has said that it has detained a trans activist on suspicion of undermining the country’s security by funding the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

 

The arrest was carried out in Russia’s Orel Region, about 300 kilometers south-west of Moscow, the FSB said in a statement on Thursday.

 

The suspect, who is not named in the statement, is said to be “an activist of the LGBT movement, who previously changed his gender from a woman to a man.”

 

According to the FSB, he is avolunteer for an NGO, known as OVD-Info, which is linked to multiple protests and has been formally designated by Moscow as a foreign agent in Russia. He allegedly also worked as an admin of an anti-Russia news outlet, according to the security service.

 

An investigation established that the suspecthad made a money transfer to a financial institution in Ukrainein order to provide assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the agency pointed out.

 

A criminal case alleging treason has been launched against the activist, the statement read, adding that investigative activities connected to the case were ongoing.

 

On Tuesday, the FSB announced the arrest of a bank worker in the Perm region of Siberia, on suspicion of making a money transfer “for thepurpose of acquiring drones, thermal sights, other special technical equipment and ammunitionfor the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”The bank employee also faces charges of alleged treason, according to the agency.

 

In early July Russia’s Investigative Committee launched a criminal case on charges of “financing terrorism” against Evgeny Chernyak, the founder of Ukraine-based alcohol holding, Global Spirits, which produces popular vodka brand Khortytsa.

 

Chernyak and some associates were accused of transferring more than 500 million rubles ($5.6 million) to representatives of the Ukrainian military “to carry out terrorist activities” on the territory of Russia amid the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.

 

The businessman was put on a wanted list, while several residential and warehouse premises, as well as offices used by Chernyak in Moscow, were searched, according to the Investigative Committee.

Russia will treat F-16s in Ukraine as nuclear threat – Lavrov

Western plans to provide US-designed fighter jets to Kiev represent an “extremely dangerous development,” Russia's foreign minister believes

 

Moscow can’t ignore the nuclear capability of US-designed F-16 fighter jets that may be supplied to Ukraine by its Western backers, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

 

By continuing to provide more sophisticated arms to Kiev, “the US and its NATO satellites create the risk of a direct armed confrontation with Russia, and this may lead to catastrophic consequences,” Lavrov warned in his interview with Lenta.ru on Wednesday.

 

The plans to supply F-16s to Kiev is yet another example of an escalatory move by the West and in itself is “an extremely dangerous development,” he stated.

 

“We have informed the nuclear powers – the US, UK and France – that Russia can’t ignore the ability of these aircraft to carry nuclear weapons,” the foreign minister continued.

 

“No assurances [by the West] will help here,”he warned. In the midst of fighting, the Russian military isn’t going to investigate whether any specific jet is equipped to deliver nuclear weapons or not, he added.

 

“The very fact of the appearance of such systems within the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be considered by us as a threat from the West in the nuclear domain,” Lavrov said.

 

In an interview on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius on Wednesday, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said “there will be the transfer of F-16s [to Ukraine], likely from European countries that have excess F-16 supplies.”

 

A day earlier, Denmark announced that a “coalition” – which includes the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the UK and Sweden – would begin training Ukrainian airmen to fly the US-designed aircraft in August.

 

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba suggested earlier this week that the first F-16s piloted by Ukrainians could take to the skies“by the end of the first quarter of next year.”

 

Kiev has been pressing its foreign backers for fourth-generation F-16 warplanes for months, arguing that they are crucial in providing air cover for Ukraine’s troops and defending Ukrainian airspace amid a massive Russian missile campaign targeting military facilities and energy infrastructure. The US and its allies initially ruled out deliveries of the jets, saying the F-16 wasn’t the type of hardware that Ukraine needed, but changed their stance on the issue over time.

The Russian state will “defend our right to free and sovereign development with all available means,” the foreign minister added.

 

Russia’s top diplomat said it was “obvious that there will be no return to the former relations with unfriendly countries,” considering what Washington and Brussels have been doing since February 2022.

 

“If they suddenly decide to abandon their anti-Russian course, then we’ll look into what they’re talking about and decide on the further line of action based on our own interests,” he explained.

 

Lavrov noted that the countries of the so-called Global East and South, which make up 85% of the world’s population, had refused to join the Western sanctions against Russia and instead showed willingness to intensify cooperation with Moscow in various areas.

 

He said Russian authorities had a clear understanding that the “strengthening of the multipolar world is a reality, but not somebody’s whim.” That’s why the country is working closely with BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and other international organizations to unite non-Western nations.

 

“The updated Foreign Policy Concept [which was published this March] states that the civilizational mission of Russia as a world power is playing a balancing role in international affairs,” Lavrov stated.

 

This means that – together with its “friends” in Asia, Latin America and Africa – Moscow is going to “contribute to the formation of a more just world order based on the goals and principles of the UN Charter… and, above all, on the principle of the sovereign equality of states,” he said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Unearthed recently in a Kentucky cornfield, more than 700 rare U.S. gold coins have become one of the greatest coin-collecting finds of the 21st century.

 

The coins are dated from 1840 to 1862 and are estimated at a value exceeding $2 million.

 

Labeled “The Great Kentucky Hoard,” experts described the find as extremely rare, and rarer still to find the coins in such good condition.

Ray Epps was a guy who attended the events in/around Washington DC on January 5th and January 6th, 2021. There is a lot of video footage of Ray Epps instructing people to go to the Capitol building. Despite a rather voluminous amount of evidence, Ray Epps was never charged with any conduct related to the events of January 6th.

 

According to a lawsuit Epps filed against Tucker Carlson and Fox News claiming the outlet targeted and defamed him, Ray Epps states, “in May 2023, the Department of Justice notified Epps that it would seek to charge him criminally for events on January 6, 2021—two-and-a-half years later.” [lawsuit citation – pg 41]

First, since when does the DOJ inform a suspect in advance they are seeking to charge him? Second, timing. It is now mid-July; where’s the indictment? Third, the wording is suspicious – theDOJ would “seek to charge him criminally.” Meaning, the Dept of Justice told Epps they were going to make efforts to arrest him?

 

Considering the lawsuit itself if dependent on a very specific narrative; and considering the lawsuit itself if dependent on a sympathy construct within that narrative; and considering the media narrative has been about wrongly targeted Epps by right-wing disinformation white nationalists, something is not passing the sniff test.

Report: Republican Megadonor Ken Griffin Reconsidering Support for Ron DeSantis

Citadel CEO and Republican megadonor Ken Griffin is reconsidering supporting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and is assessing the Republican presidential primary field for candidates as DeSantis has failed to make headway in the polls against former President Donald Trump.

 

Griffin donated $5 million to DeSantis’s gubernatorial reelection campaign and previously praised DeSantis before he officially launched his presidential campaign.

 

In November, Griffin told Politico he was ready to endorse DeSantis for president, saying DeSantis “has a tremendous record as governor of Florida, and our country would be well-served by him as president.”

 

Now, he is part of a growing group of donors who are worried about the trajectory of DeSantis’s presidential campaign, according to

 

Griffin spokesperson Zia Ahmed told the outlet the GOP megadonor “continues to assess the field,” which includes candidates like former Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Tim Scott, Chris Christie, and Vivek Ramaswamy.

 

Still, Ahmed maintained that “nothing’s changed” about Griffin’s stance toward the election.

 

DeSantis campaign spokesperson Andrew Romero downplayed reports about Griffin’s hesitance to throw his multimillion-dollar warchest behind the Florida governor.

 

Romero told CNBC:

Challenging the establishment is never easy – and this campaign to save our nation is going to be a long, hard-fought battle to defeat Joe Biden. The CNBC report came more than two months after the New York Times revealed Griffin was hesitant to back DeSantis after the two met in the weeks leading up to DeSantis’s official announcement.

The financier and Mr. DeSantis met in Florida in the last two weeks, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting, which came as Mr. Griffin has taken issue in private conversations with some of Mr. DeSantis’s policy moves and pronouncements. In particular, the two people said, Mr. Griffin was deeply troubled by Mr. DeSantis’s statements that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a “territorial dispute” — a remark he later tried to clarify — and that the war was not a vital U.S. interest.

Last year, Mr. Griffin moved his hedge fund, Citadel, to Miami from Chicago, citing crime concerns.

 

DeSantis’s trouble with the donor class is just the latest sign of an underwhelming start to his presidential campaign. The Florida governor has not made significant headway in the polls against former President Donald Trump, the “runaway frontrunner,” as one of DeSantis’s top allies described.

 

For example, a June Harvard poll found that Trump led DeSantis by a margin of 67 to 33 percent, a slight decrease for DeSantis from Harvard’s May poll taken before the Florida governor entered the race. Additionally, Trump holds double-digit leads over DeSantis in various states, including, but not limited to, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, New York, and Iowa.

 

On Tuesday, reports broke that Rupert Murdoch is losing confidence in DeSantis’s ability to defeat Trump.

‘Precarious’ situation at Europe’s largest nuclear plant – IAEA

Monitors from the UN atomic watchdog, stationed at the Zaporozhye facility, have heard multiple explosions

 

The situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant remains “very precarious,” with inspectors reporting a series of explosions in the past few days, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said. The facility is the largest of its kind in Europe, and is located close to the frontline of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

 

In its latest update on Ukraine issued on Wednesday, the IAEA detailed the activities of its personnel at the Russia-controlled facility.The blasts heard by the monitors occurred “some distance away” at different times. The site itself was not impacted.

 

However, IAEA staff say they have not seen any mines or explosives at the Zaporozhye plant, contrary to Ukrainian claims that the facility has been “mined”. They are yet to gain access to the roofs of two reactor buildings, where Kiev previously claimed explosives had been placed by the Russian military.

 

Moscow has denied the allegations and accused Kiev of laying the groundwork for a false-flag operation targeting the location, which both Russia and Ukraine view as their own.

 

The IAEA is also monitoring the availability of water following last month’s destruction of the Kakhovka dam, a major disaster that Russia and Ukraine blamed on each other. Water reserves are sufficient “for some months,” the agency concluded.

 

The Zaporozhye power plant’s Russian personnel are currently preparing to switch the only semi-operational reactor from hot shutdown to cold shutdown, a necessary step for maintenance, the IAEA said. The other reactor is to be brought into hot shutdown instead, the statement added. Keeping a reactor in that state allows the generation of steam, which is then used to process liquid radioactive waste collected in storage tanks.

 

Ukraine’s nuclear regulator had ordered a cold shutdown of all reactors, the IAEA noted. The site would need an external source of steam for safe operation, if all reactors were fully switched off, which the UN watchdog believes to be a safer option, given the circumstances.
