Fighter jets were dispatched Friday to intercept a private plane that entered restricted airspace over Lake Tahoe where President Biden is vacationing this week.

'Two NORAD F-16 fighter aircraft and a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin responded to a civilian aircraft that violated a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) area near Lake Tahoe, Nevada, this morning,' read a press release.

The incident occurred this morning at 7:50 am PT and the 'civilian aircraft' was 'escorted out of the area.'

'During this event, the fighter hets 'dispensed flares' which may have been noticed by the public.

'Flares were employed with the highest regard for safety of the intercepted aircraft and people on the ground. The flares burn out quickly and completely and there is no danger to people on the ground when dispensed.'

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) says it has a 'layered defense network' of radars and other technologies to identify aircraft and make a determination on response.

Details about who was operating the private plane were not immediately available.

President Joe Biden is on his nine-day stay with family in Lake Tahoe, including his son Hunter, at the $18 million home of billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer.

The White House listed no public events on Biden's schedule.

First Lady Jill Biden, Ashley Biden, Hunter and his wife Melissa Cohen, along with son Beau and several other grandchildren are enjoying the vacation alongside the president.

No visitor logs are kept during the president's vacation travel, so it is unclear if he may be meeting with anyone during the getaway.

The president and his family enjoyed a pilates and spin class in a town close to the rental on Wednesday.

San Diego Pilot Dies After Jet Crash

12:39 PM – Friday, August 25, 2023

On Thursday night, the pilot of a F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet reportedly crashed near the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, ejecting him from the plane causing his death.

The crash happened right before midnight, when the military jet went down in a remote area of the base.

The air base released a statement in the aftermath of the tragedy.

“We are aware of an accident involving an F/A-18 Hornet in the vicinity of MCAS Miramar at 11:54 P.M. PST,” the air base said in a statement. “This aircraft is not part of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing but was operating out of MCAS Miramar.”

Additionally, the statement said that the collision occurred on government property east of the air station, and there are no signs of property damage on the ground.

Once the body of the victim was recovered, the Miramar Marine Corps released another statement regarding the news of the passing.

“Search and rescue recovered the U.S. Marine Corps pilot who has been confirmed deceased at the site,” the statement read. “With a heavy heart, our condolences go to the Marine’s family during this time.”

The identity of the pilot has not yet been made public as authorities are still informing family members of the tragedy.

Reportedly, the pilot was the only person in the plane and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

George Soros’ Open Society Foundations to significantly curtail work in Europe, lay off staff

Open Society Foundations plan to significantly curtail their work in Europe and lay off much of their staff on the continent, the foundations’ leaders told staff in Berlin, according to an internal email and several current employees, who say the decision is painful and perplexing.

The planned European cuts, as described in an internal email viewed by The Associated Press, would represent a historic break with the roots of billionaire philanthropist George Soros’ support for civil society through education, human rights work and policy research, which started in his native Hungary more than three decades ago. The strategic change coincides with Alex Soros, George’s son, announcing a shift to a new operating model the board adopted at the end of June, its first major move since he took over as head of OSF’s board of directors in December. Grantees in Europe say OSF has not directly communicated the proposed strategy change to them, contributing to a sense of disbelief.

“The Open Society Foundations is changing the way we work, but my family and OSF have long supported, and remain steadfastly committed to the European project,” Alex Soros said in a statement.

An OSF spokesperson said the foundations remain committed, “to the promotion of democracy and the fight against authoritarianism in Europe, and to the civil society sector that is crucial to those causes.”

Grantees told The Associated Press that a withdrawal of support for human rights, political participation or digital protections in the European Union would be a strategic mistake and questioned whether the foundations had made a final decision to do so. They also said the lack of communication and uncertainty is damaging to OSF’s reputation. OSF supports work on a wide range of issues that touch on vulnerable populations, democracy and independent media among other topics.

An email from Thorsten Klassen, director of OSF’s Berlin office, which was sent to Berlin staff on July 20 and was seen by The Associated Press, said, “the new approved strategic direction provides for withdrawal and termination of large parts of our current work within the European Union.” The email continued that the shift was made in part because the EU has provided public funding for human rights and pluralism and OSF wants to reallocate its resources elsewhere.

The foundations have proposed to cut 80% of staff in their Berlin offices, the email said, though all the proposed layoffs are subject to negotiations with labor unions. OSF also proposed to cut at least 60% of staff in Brussels and an unclear number in London, several employees told the AP. The staff members spoke on the condition of anonymity as the foundations have told them not to speak with the press and because they fear repercussions.

In January, OSF told staff in Barcelona that their office would close and most of the staff there have since chosen to leave. OSF’s leadership plans to complete the planned layoffs by January.

OSF did not dispute these figures when asked for comment.

The “recalibration of our work in the European Union” is part of larger organizational changes, an OSF spokesperson said, adding they will continue “to fund civil society groups across Europe, including those working on EU external affairs,” along with support for European Roma communities.

The new “opportunity model” was adopted by OSF’s board on June 28 and is laid out in a 12-page document that offers some clues but little clarity about the foundations’ immediate future plans. The foundations will reorganize around “opportunities” rather than programs, with opportunities defined as “bodies of work organized around clear ambitious goals.”

What those opportunities will be has not yet been defined - another source of bitterness for some staff about the proposed cuts to their programs. How can OSF be sure they do not want to continue their work in Europe if they haven’t decided yet what their future priorities will be, staff members asked?

Many of the survivors are angry, and haunted by the thought that a just few minutes of notice could have saved many lives.

Baird’s neighborhood near Lahainaluna Road was filled with kids who were home alone when the flames hit, he said.

“We needed like 10 more minutes, and we could have saved a lot of kids,” he said, choking back tears. “If we’d just had like a 10- or 15-minute warning.”

The family ventured out to a Kahului mall recently, looking for a moment of normalcy in the aftermath of the tragedy. They ran into a playmate of their son.

“The kids just don’t have a filter. So their son ran up and was just telling our son, you know, ‘This kid is dead. This kid is dead.’ And it’s like, all my son’s friends that they come to our house every day,” he said. “And their parents were at work, and they were home alone. And nobody had a warning. Nobody, nobody, nobody knew.”
