The Deep Lagoon

 

Ridges of glowing interstellar gas and dark dust clouds inhabit the turbulent, cosmic depths of the Lagoon Nebula. Also known as M8, The bright star forming region is about 5,000 light-years distant. It makes for a popular stop on telescopic tours of the constellation Sagittarius toward the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. Dominated by the telltale red emission of ionized hydrogen atoms recombining with stripped electrons, this deep telescopic view of the Lagoon's central reaches is about 40 light-years across. The bright hourglass shape near the center of the frame is gas ionized and sculpted by energetic radiation and extreme stellar winds from a massive young star.

I have a dream. When all of this is done, Blackrock, Vanguard, and State Street are shut down, the CEO's sent to SuperMax Gen Pop for life, and the assets are seized (fuck the investors) and divided up among every American citizen who's never held an elected Federal office with double shares given to combat wounded vets or their widows. Re: Whether Phoenix Ordinance S-50010 providing for the donation of firearms to Ukraine violates state law To: The Honorable Katie Hobbs, Governor of Arizona The Honorable Warren Petersen, President of the Arizona State Senate The Honorable Ben Toma, Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives The Honorable Quang Nguyen, Member of the Arizona Legislature The Honorable Selina Bliss, Member of the Arizona Legislature The Honorable Adrian Fontes, Secretary of State of Arizona

 

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-194.01, the Attorney General’s Office (the “Office”) has investigated whether Phoenix Ordinance S-50010 (the “Ordinance”) violates A.R.S. §§ 12-943, 12-945, and/or 13-3108. The Ordinance, adopted June 28, 2023, authorized the City of Phoenix (“Phoenix” or “City”) to donate approximately 500-600 unclaimed firearms to the National Police of Ukraine via a private export company. The Office concludes that notwithstanding the City’s commendable intent, the Ordinance violates A.R.S. §§ 12-943, 12-945, and 13-3108(A). The Arizona legislature declared over twenty years ago that it considered firearms regulation a matter of statewide concern and that it wished to limit the ability of state political subdivisions to regulate firearms. As relevant here, the legislature subsequently enacted A.R.S. § 12-945(B), which provides that local agencies must dispose of unclaimed firearms by selling them

2 in a two-step process; A.R.S. § 13-3108(A), which prohibits cities from enacting firearms ordinances unless pursuant to state law; and A.R.S. § 12-943, which provides that cities must dispose of firearms in accordance with A.R.S. §§ 12-940 to -945. In 2017, the Arizona Supreme Court considered whether a Tucson ordinance providing for the destruction of firearms could coexist with an Arizona statute barring firearms destruction. State ex rel. Brnovich v. City of Tucson, 242 Ariz. 588 (2017) (“Tucson”). The Court held that firearms regulation is a matter of statewide concern, thereby precluding cities from enacting firearms ordinances that conflict with state law. Id. at 601, ¶ 51. That decision is controlling here. Arizona law requires cities to dispose of unclaimed firearms by selling them in the manner provided by statute, yet the Ordinance provides for Phoenix to dispose of its unclaimed firearms by donating them to Ukraine via an export company. Because a “donation” is not a “sale”—and because the Ordinance conflicts with A.R.S. § 12-945 in other related respects—it violates that statute, and therefore also violates A.R.S. § 13-3108(A) and A.R.S. § 12-943.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lesley Wolf of Delaware, accused of stonewalling federal agents building a criminal case against Hunter Biden, is a lifelong Democrat who previously worked for a major liberal law firm.

 

Wolf, who began working as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Delaware District in 2006, told Biden and his attorneys that IRS agents wanted to search his storage locker in northern Virginia, IRS agent Gary Shapley and another whistleblower testified. She also allegedly shut down agents’ proposal to search a guesthouse on Joe Biden’s Delaware property where Hunter had been living off and on, and participated in a meeting where attorneys suggested departures from Justice Department protocol.

 

Before joining the DOJ, Wolf clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Anita Brody, a George H.W. Bush appointee. She also worked as an associate at corporate law firm Ropes & Gray. Ninety-one percent of the firm’s political donations went to Democrats between 2017 and 2020, University of Iowa law professor Derek Muller found, making it the 39th-most liberal of the 100 biggest law firms in the country.

 

Ropes & Gray employees recently published an article in Bloomberg Law arguing that firms should employ “equity audits” to determine whether or not enough minority employees occupy senior positions. Without the audits, they say, diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings are likely to fail

Hunter Biden has garnered quiet support and financial backing from a high-powered Hollywood attorney while awaiting the outcome of a long-running federal investigation into his taxes and finances being conducted by the U.S. attorney in Delaware, multiple sources told CBS News.

 

Kevin Morris, the attorney known for crafting the $550 million licensing deal for the creators of South Park and who later won a Tony award as a co-producer of the hit musical "Book of Mormon," is now crafting a legal and media strategy for Hunter Biden, his office confirmed when reached this week. It declined further comment.

 

President Biden's son maintains a robust New York-based legal team handling his defense in the ongoing criminal probe in Delaware that has been focused on his tax and financial dealings. Morris has been operating behind the scenes and has turned his attention in recent weeks to conducting a forensic analysis and investigation into what happened to Hunter Biden's laptop — including how the device became public, sources familiar with his efforts say.

 

Entering the bruising political fight is an unusual move for Morris, who has long been a maverick in Hollywood. Morris founded a law firm that represented a cast of A-list stars and then began writing fiction and producing documentaries. He also subsequently helped negotiate another "South Park" deal, this one worth a reported $900 million, with MTV Entertainment Studios, which is part of the CBS News' parent company Paramount.

 

Hunter Biden could not be reached for comment, but his criminal attorney, Christopher Clark, confirmed that Morris is serving as an "attorney and trusted adviser" to Hunter Biden.

 

Morris has also been working on a documentary chronicling Hunter Biden's life since he has been the focus of conservative television commentators and investigated by congressional Republicans, a Democratic Party source in Washington said.

 

A source familiar with the arrangement between Morris and Hunter Biden said the attorney paid Hunter Biden's past-due tax debts. The New York Times reported in March that Hunter Biden told associates he had taken out a loan to repay delinquent taxes that were in excess of $1 million. A long-running federal investigation by the Trump-appointed U.S. attorney includes a close examination of Hunter Biden's taxes. CBS News has previously reported a grand jury has for months been hearing evidence on the matter in Delaware.

 

Federal investigators subpoenaed documents from a paternity lawsuit that included tax records for the president's son, an attorney involved in the paternity matter told CBS News. "They wanted every record relating to Hunter Biden we had," Clint Lancaster said. Lancaster represented Lunden Roberts, a woman who filed a lawsuit against Hunter Biden in 2019 alleging he was the father of her child.

 

A December 2020 subpoena from the U.S. attorney's office in Delaware, also obtained by CBS News, requested all documents "regarding [Hunter] Biden's income, assets, debts, obligations, and financial transactions … and all personal and business expenditures."

 

Hunter Biden and Morris both live in the Los Angeles area, where the president's son has been living while painting and selling his artwork. At one time, the law firm Morris founded was representing celebrities that included Matthew McConaughey, Ellen DeGeneres, Scarlett Johansson, Zoe Saldana, Zach Galifianakis, Chris Rock and Laura Linney. Morris also has authored two novels and a book of short stories.

A cap on discretionary spending

The deal would suspend the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling until Jan. 1, 2025, allowing the U.S. government to pay its bills.

 

In exchange, non-defense discretionary spending would be “roughly flat” at current year levels in 2024, “when factoring in agreed upon appropriations adjustments,” according to White House officials.

 

They estimated that total non-defense discretionary spending excluding benefits for veterans would total $637 billion for the 2024 fiscal year, down marginally from $638 billion the year before. That total would also increase by 1% in 2025.

 

A breather for the 2024 election

The debt limit extension lasts past 2024, meaning Congress would not need to address the deeply polarizing issue again until after the November 2024 presidential election.

 

Still, tough conversations about how to allocate money under the new spending caps will need to take place in Congress this year.

 

Increased defense spending

The deal would boost total defense spending to $886 billion, in line with Biden’s 2024 budget spending proposal.

 

That is about a 3% increase from the $858 billion allocated in the current budget for the Pentagon and other defense-related programs in other agencies.

 

Moving special IRS funding

Biden and Democrats secured $80 billion for a decade in new funding to help the Internal Revenue Service enforce the tax code for wealthy Americans in last year’s Inflation Reduction Act, a move the administration said would yield $200 billion in additional revenue over the next 10 years.

 

‘Paygo’

Republicans secured a budgeting mechanism known as “Paygo,” which is short for pay-as-you-go, that says new government agency actions affecting revenues and spending should be offset by savings.

 

But the law would give Biden’s budget director the opportunity to issue waivers to that requirement and it would also limit judicial review of the decisions.

Professional jobs may actually get replaced by "machine learning" even more quickly than blue collar ones, especially if professions like medicine allow "standards of care" and/or protocol to take the place of human interactions. If your work force is diverse and immigrant, they will be unaware of rights protected by the Constitution and they will also be more vulnerable to displacement by machine learning.

Footage shows smoke rising from a school bus after a driver was killed in a fiery crash in New York on Wednesday afternoon (27 September).

 

Police said the bus was carrying 22 high school students and three adults eastbound on Lake Road in Webster at around 1:15pm, when a Toyota pulled out into its path.

 

The driver of the car died in the crash, while one child and one adult were taken to hospital.

 

According to local reports, the bus belongs to the Wayne Central School District.

 

“No life-threatening injuries were sustained by students or school personnel,” a statement from the district read.

Billionaire Chewy cofounder Ryan Cohen takes over as GameStop CEO

GameStop has a CEO once again after Ryan Cohen, the billionaire founder of Chewy, was appointed Thursday.

 

Cohen had been executive chairman since early June after CEO Matt Furlong was shown the door. The company reported a bigger-than-expected quarterly loss along with the dismissal of Furlong, a former Amazon executive.

 

Cohen won't be paid a salary for the CEO role, or for his role as chairman and president, the company said in a statement.

 

Cohen, who's the largest investor in GameStop with a 12.1% stake, sold Chewy in 2017 for $3.3 billion. He's worth about $3.2 billion, Forbes reported.

 

GameStop shares jumped more than 7% in premarket trading Thursday. However, GameStop is now worth about $5 billion — some $3 billion less than when Furlong was axed.

 

Cohen first took a stake in GameStop in 2020 and joined its board in January 2021 before becoming chairman that June. His initial appointment helped spark a 50% surge in GameStop shares in a matter of days as it became one of the "meme" stocks that triggered a frenzy among retail investors.

 

However, the company was also being touted months earlier on the subreddit r/WallStreetBets by Keith Gill, who was also known as u/DeepFuckingValue, or DFV, and on YouTube as Roaring Kitty.

 

The saga has had renewed attention following the release of the film "Dumb Money" earlier this month.

 

GameStop stock peaked in late January 2021 at $483, costing some hedge funds billions and generating huge gains for retail traders. Gill was seen by many as a David standing up to a Goliath, Insider previously reported.

 

Earlier this month, GameStop reported a slight rise in net sales for the second quarter ending July 29 to $1.164 billion, compared with the same period last year. The net loss was slashed from $108.7 million to $2.8 million for the period.

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District is working to delay upriver progression of salt water from the Gulf of Mexico by augmenting the sill initially constructed in July 2023

 

Construction is underway to increase the existing underwater sill from a depth of -55 feet to a depth of -30 feet. A 620-foot-wide navigation lane will be kept to a depth of -55 feet to ensure deep-draft shipping continues along the nation’s busiest inland waterway.

 

USACE initially constructed the underwater barrier sill in July 2023 to create an artificial basin to delay the ingress of salt water beyond river mile 64 above Head of Passes. As a result of the river’s prolonged extreme low-flow rate, the underwater sill was overtopped Sept. 20, 2023.

 

 

“As a result of continued falling conditions, this existing sill was overtopped and the toe of the saltwater wedge has reached River Mile 69, near the community of Jesuit Bend,” said Col. Cullen Jones, USACE New Orleans District commander. “Our modeling indicates that by augmenting the existing sill, we can support state and local preparedness and response efforts by delaying further upriver progression of the salt water by approximately 10 to 15 days.

 

In addition to the sill augmentation, USACE is preparing to transport fresh water to impacted areas. During previous low-water events, such as 1988 and 2012, barging was used to transport fresh water to treatment facilities downriver of the saltwater toe.

 

“The Corps is securing water barges that will support impacted water treatment facilities by transporting water collected from portions of the river that do not have salinity readings,” said Jones. “This water can then be combined with water at the municipal facility to create a mixture that is safe for treatment.”
