The public comment included many antisemitic remarks about Jewish people, with several people referencing an antisemitic group’s website.

“There was a lot of vitriol,” Starker said.

Speakers were given three minutes each, until the council took a recess and shortened the public comment period to one minute each.

Under RICO, a person who has committed "at least two acts of racketeering activity" drawn from a list of 35 crimes (27 federal crimes and eight state crimes) within a 10-year period can be charged with racketeering if such acts are related in one of four specified ways to an "enterprise."[1]

Those found guilty of racketeering can be fined up to $25,000 and sentenced to 20 years in prison per racketeering count.[2]

In addition, the racketeer must forfeit all ill-gotten gains and interest in any business gained through a pattern of "racketeering activity."[3]

A US Attorney who indicts someone under RICO has the option of seeking a pre-trial restraining order or an injunction to temporarily seize a defendant's assets and prevent the transfer of potentially forfeitable property as well as to require the defendant to put up a performance bond. An injunction or performance bond ensures that there is something to seize in the event of a guilty verdict.

This provision prevented the owners of Mafia-related shell corporations to abscond with assets. In many cases, the threat of a RICO indictment can force defendants to plead guilty to lesser charges, in part because the seizure of assets would make it difficult to pay a defense attorney.

Despite its harsh provisions, a RICO-related charge is considered easy to prove in court because it focuses on patterns of behavior as opposed to criminal acts.[4]

Enterprise defined

There must be one of four specified relationships between the defendant(s) and the enterprise. Either the defendant(s):

invested the proceeds of the pattern of racketeering activity into the enterprise (18 U.S.C. § 1962(a)); or

acquired or maintained an interest in, or control of, the enterprise through the pattern of racketeering activity (subsection (b)); or

conducted or participated in the affairs of the enterprise "through" the pattern of racketeering activity (subsection (c)); or

conspired to do one of the above (subsection (d)).[5]

The US Supreme Court noted that a commentator had used the terms 'prize', 'instrument', 'victim', or 'perpetrator' for these four relationships.[6]

Civil suits

RICO also permits a private individual "damaged in his business or property" by a "racketeer" to file a civil suit. The plaintiff must prove the existence of an "enterprise." The defendant(s) are not the enterprise; in other words, the defendant(s) and the enterprise are not one and the same.[7]

A civil RICO action can be filed in state or federal court.[8]

Both the criminal and the civil components allow the recovery of treble damages (triple the amount of actual/compensatory damages).[citation needed]

Mysterious Fatal Respiratory Illness Sickens Dogs Across The US, Vets Are Puzzled

A fatal respiratory illness sickening dogs across the United States is puzzling the veterinarian community after the illness has yet to be identified.

Dr. Lindsey Ganzer the owner of North Springs Veterinary Referral Center in Colorado has reported at her animal hospital alone she has seen 30 cases of the mysterious illness.

Ganzer sampled the unknown respiratory illness but it tested negative for any known viruses and bacteria.

According to the Oregon Department of Agriculture the symptoms of the new illness are “Coughing, sneezing, discharge from the eyes or nose, trouble breathing and fatigue.”

Vets have reported the illness does not respond to traditional antibiotics which has resulted in dozens of dogs dying from the unknown respiratory illness.

Slade Sohmer, former editor of The Recount, bragged in private text messages about nearly tricking a 14-year old boy into having sex in a public restroom. Following his arrest, police found evidence that Sohmer posed online as a teenage girl, offering to meet and engage in sexual intercourse with underage boys. Sohmer even admitted to attending the meeting he had set up, claiming the teen boy was “horny” and “bulging” because he thought he was meeting a girl. Sohmer says he did not go through with his plan to rape the child, claiming “I chickened out.”

Sohmer, who was hired byThe Circus’ John Heilemannto run his far-left ‘Recount’ website, also boasted about using social media app SnapChat to convince a 15-year old boy, and in a separate incident a 13-year old boy, into performing live sex acts for him using the video and photo app. In another instance, he fantasized with another individual about ‘spit-roasting’ (a type of sexual act involving three individuals) a teenage boy.

Writing about another young boy, Sohmer texted a friend: “I’d love to show up outside his school and force him into our car and take him to a hotel and just use him for 48 hours”.

The left-wing editor and journalist was arrested last week in Massachusetts on suspicion of downloading and disseminating child pornography. When police examined Sohmer’s personal computer they uncovered over 1,300 pornographic images and videos – many of which are believed to involve underage children. At least eight of the underage victims seen in the videos and photos have been identified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Proposed inter-governmental agreement on animal rights

The Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW) is a proposed inter-governmental agreement to recognise that animals are sentient, to prevent cruelty and reduce suffering, and to promote standards on the welfare of animals such as farm animals, companion animals, animals in scientific research, draught animals, wildlife and animals in recreation.

It is proposed that a UDAW be adopted by the United Nations. If endorsed by the UN (as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was) the UDAW would be a non-binding set of principles that acknowledges the importance of the sentience of animals and human responsibilities towards them. The principles were designed to encourage and enable national governments to introduce and improve animal protection legislation and initiatives.

It has been argued that a UDAW is consistent with, and could help secure the achievement of, the UN Millennium Development Goals. and the subsequent Sustainable Development Goals. The declaration as of October 2014 had the support, in principle, of 46 countries and of ministries from 17 further countries. More than 2.5 million people from a wide variety of UN member states have supported the public campaign. Some have argued that the agreement does not go far enough and should guarantee animal rights instead of simply animal welfare.

This should not be confused with the Declaration of Animal Rights (2011) or the Universal Charter of the Rights of Other Species (2000).

In a recent floor speech, Durbin said the committee needs to know if justices are for sale.

“I’m not going to stand idly by as these fawning billionaires with interest before the court use their immense wealth to buy private access to the justices and then deny the Senate Judiciary Committee information to which we’re lawfully entitled,” Durbin said.

Should the subpoenas be authorized, Democrats will still have hurdles ahead.

That’s because if Leo and Crow choose not to comply, the Senate would be forced to hold a vote to enforce the subpoenas and that might not win the necessary majority.

Leo, the activist who was instrumental in former President Donald Trump’s effort to add conservative judges to the federal bench, blasted the committee’s probe in a statement last week, saying he “will not bow to the vile and disgusting liberal McCarthyism, that seeks to destroy the Supreme Court simply because it follows the constitution rather than their political agenda.”

Leo’s attorneys also said in a letter sent to the committee last month that the inquiry represented “political retaliation.” Thomas and Alito have denied any wrongdoing.

A lawyer for Crow had been negotiating to supply the committee with some information related to the travel and luxury vacations he gifted to Thomas over the past five years but the offer was ultimately rejected by Democrats who wanted more information spanning their long friendship.

Both Leo and Robin Arkley II were the focus of a ProPublica report earlier this year that said Alito did not disclose a luxury 2008 fishing trip he took on a private jet that was organized in part by Leo.

According to the publication, the justice’s stay was provided free of charge by Arkley, another major donor to the conservative legal movement.

The committee had originally said that it planned to Arkley, but on Wednesday said he had already submitted requested materials and a subpoena was no longer necessary.

A report released last week accusing Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas of improperly receiving lavish gifts from a wealthy friend is nothing more than a political hit job, one expert claimed.

"This is just grasping at straws by the left that is desperate to tear down Justice Thomas because he now has a working originalist majority on the court," said Roger Severino, vice president of domestic policy and The Joseph C. and Elizabeth A. Anderlik Fellow at The Heritage Foundation.

"This is politics. Plain and simple."

Severino's comments to Fox News Digital came in response to a ProPublica report on Thursday accusing Thomas of improperly receiving lavish vacations from Republican mega donor Harlan Crow.

The ProPublica report accuses Thomas of taking trips across the world on Crow's yacht and private jet without disclosing them and Crow acknowledged extending "hospitality" to Thomas but insisted he never asked for it and that the two families have been friends for decades.

The ProPublica report claimed that trips taken by Thomas "have no known precedent in the modern history of the U.S. Supreme Court," which Severino, a Harvard Law graduate, flatly rejected.

"There is no 'there' there because the justices have received gifts of hospitality from friends forever," Severino said.

"And many of the justices have taken far more trips than Justice Thomas on somebody else's dime, includingJustice Breyer, who we know has taken at least233 tripswhen he was on the bench."

Severino explained that justices are permitted to accept invites to properties of friends for dinner or vacations without paying for it or disclosing it.

"There's nothing to see here because there's been no allegation whatsoever that accepting travel to a friend's property somehow influenced Justice Thomas's decision-making," Severino said.

"That's absurd. If you know anything about Justice Thomas, it's that he's not influenced by outside pressures one whit. He's guided by the law and the Constitution. Period."

Severino accused liberals of giving a "pass" to perceived bias on the left, pointing out that the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated a same-sex wedding before the Obergefell decision that federally recognized gay marriage.

"Did that perhaps indicate bias where she should have recused herself?" Severino asked. "The media was fairly silent about that and that sort of thing is much closer to the heart of impropriety in judging."

Justices are not required to disclose invitations and travel that are considered "personal hospitality" and the Supreme Court is not subject to an ethics code.

Defendants arraigned in international firearms trafficking case

ATLANTA - Grevaughn Sanchez Goodman, Shavonte Justin Summers, Tranquilo G. Goodman, and Demetrius Lamont Randolph, Jr., have been arraigned on federal charges of conspiracy to deal in firearms without a license. Additionally, Grevaughn Goodman was arraigned on a charge of firearms trafficking conspiracy in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 933(a)(3), a new statute passed by Congress in June 2022. A fifth defendant, Dexter Wellington Roberts, III, is not yet in federal custody. He is charged with conspiracy to deal in firearms without a license, firearms trafficking conspiracy, and smuggling.

“Illegally purchasing firearms on behalf of others is a serious crime that frequently places guns in the hands of individuals prohibited from possessing a firearm,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan. “Many of the firearms allegedly traced to the defendants in this case were recovered from criminals in Canada.”

“Among ATF’s top priorities is ensuring that firearms traffickers are aggressively investigated and swiftly brought to justice. This is an excellent example of such an investigation that was worked cooperatively by multiple partner agencies with outstanding results,” said Acting Assistant Special Agent in Charge Raymond Connor.

According to U.S. Attorney Buchanan, the charges, and other information presented in court: Beginning in mid-December 2022, Dexter Roberts allegedly began conspiring with a Canadian citizen and other individuals to obtain large numbers of firearms in the southeastern United States and to resell them to others, including in Canada and Mexico.

From December 2022 through February 2023, Roberts personally made retail purchases of at least 49 firearms. In January 2023, Grevaughn Goodman allegedly began purchasing firearms for the conspiracy, buying more than 50 guns from January through April 2023. Tranquilo Goodman, Grevaughn’s brother, allegedly joined the conspiracy by March 2023 and bought at least 11 firearms that month. Shavonte Summers allegedly joined the conspiracy by May 2023, and bought over 50 firearms in May and June 2023. Demetrius Randolph allegedly joined the conspiracy in June 2023, and bought at least 10 guns over two days from five different licensed firearms dealers.

During the investigation of the conspiracy, law enforcement officers completed four bulk seizures of firearms, totaling over 120 weapons in all, and including a load of 47 firearms seized from Roberts in Henry County, Georgia. Additionally, numerous other weapons allegedly purchased by defendants in this case have been seized by law enforcement throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Grevaughn Sanchez Goodman, a/k/a “The General,” 23, of Homestead, Florida, Shavonte Justin Summers, 22, of Homestead, Florida, Tranquilo G. Goodman, 24, of Miramar, Florida, and Demetrius Lamont Randolph, Jr., 23, of Homestead, Florida, were all arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Linda T. Walker.

Dexter Wellington Roberts, III, a/k/a “Science,” 43, of Austell, Georgia, is not yet in federal custody. Roberts was arrested in mid-October in the Bahamas on another weapons charge. He is charged with conspiracy to deal in firearms without a license, dealing in firearms without a license, firearms trafficking conspiracy and smuggling. Roberts, Goodman, Summers, Goodman and Randolph were indicted by a federal grand jury on October 24, 2023.

Members of the public are reminded that the indictment only contains charges. The defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove the defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.

This case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS).

Before the pandemic, the United States had maintained nearly 95 percent nationwide vaccination coverage for 10 years.

The United States now faces its highest-ever childhood vaccine exemption rate in history, according to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report published on Nov. 10.

Before the pandemic, the United States had maintained nearly 95 percent nationwide vaccination coverage for 10 years.

Yet between 2020 and 2021, vaccine coverage in kindergarten-aged children fell to 94 percent; between 2021 and 2022, it dropped to 93 percent.

Vaccine exemption rates have also increased to 3 percent.

“It is not clear whether this reflects a true increase in opposition to vaccination, or if parents are opting for nonmedical [vaccine] exemptions because of barriers to vaccination or out of convenience,” the report authors concluded.

“Whether because of an increase in hesitancy or barriers to vaccination, the COVID-19 pandemic affected childhood routine vaccination,” they continued.

Post-COVID Skepticism Spilling Into Vaccine Skepticism

Dr. Cody Meissner, a professor of pediatrics at the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine, was concerned that people's skepticism toward the current COVID-19 vaccines may have also affected their attitude toward conventional vaccines, leading to the decline in CDC-recommended and state-required vaccinations, as recently reported by the CDC.

He suggested that the CDC's initial delayed recognition of myocarditis as a COVID vaccine side effect in adolescents and young adults, coupled with the agency's encouragement to vaccinate, as one example of what may be contributing to people's distrust.

“I think those [vaccination] recommendations were well-intentioned,” he said, but the slow acknowledgment of side effects may have left some people with a perception that the CDC was “not completely forthcoming.”

Pediatrician Dr. Mark Barrett said that the current trend is likely caused by people distrusting recommendations from the CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and even their doctors.

“I feel parents are doing their own research,” he wrote to The Epoch Times via email.

Pediatrician Dr. Derek Husmann said that children having the lowest risk of severe COVID-19 gave parents and pediatricians a unique perspective, making them question the broad need for vaccines.

“The pediatricians’ perspective is pretty significantly different—in reference to the COVID pandemic—than a physician who takes care of adults,” Dr. Husmann said, “because the pediatric population was at essentially zero risk of death or serious complications from COVID infection.”

According to the CDC website dashboard, deaths from COVID-19 make up about 3 percent of all deaths, but the percentage is even smaller in children.

“There was a perceived conflict between the information that COVID was less serious in children, yet the vaccine was recommended for them. This was never satisfactorily explained or resolved,” Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and health policy in the Infectious Disease Division at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, wrote to The Epoch Times.

California pediatrician Dr. Samara Cardenas said that the public slowly came to realize the COVID-19 vaccines were not safe nor effective as initially promised, and this may have also prompted parents to question the need for routine vaccinations.

“[In California], if you’re not vaccinated, they won’t even take a medical exemption. So I have quite a few patients asking about homeschooling rather than vaccinating their children,” she said.

“There has been this incredible increase in homeschooling since the COVID pandemic, and so that may have falsely inflated the vaccine rates in the [report],” added Dr. Husmann, who is based in rural Texas. …

A federal jury in Washington convicted John Earle Sullivan on all seven counts with which he had been charged, KSTU.

In addition to being charged with disrupting Congress during its vote to certify the 2020 presidential election, Sullivan faced three weapons charges as the result of his bring a knife into the Capitol.

The last public action performed by John Adams came on June 30, 1826, just a few days before the founder’s death. Asked by George Whitney for a Fourth of July toast, the former president offered, “Independence forever!” No more, no less. You can’t get more American than that. Yet independence is the very thing being choked out of us at an ever-quickening gait. And Congress just gave that horse another sharp kick in the ribs.

The House of Representatives’ failure to spike a federal “kill switch” mandate meansthat outside of a political miracle, allnew vehicles from 2026 onward will be required to incorporate “advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology.” It will “passively monitor the performance of a driver” and automatically disable the vehicle “if impairment is detected.” In other words: You will no longer have control of your car. Some outside entity — human or program — could, at any time, make it inoperable.

Naturally, the message repeaters have assured us that talk of a kill switch is just more right-wing conspiracy theory hyper-frenzy. After all, this is about safety. Think of the lives it will save! No more hit-and-runs caused by drunk drivers. No more near-sighted old codgers not seeing the 12-year-old girl until it was too late. You breathe a word against this wonderful new thing and you out yourself as a monster who wants children dead.

Of course, the elephant in the corner is: What assurance do we have that “impairment” just means drunkenness, drug use — the usual things? What assurance do we have that this narrow definition will never be widened?

We now live in a world where the Department of Justice describes parents objecting to porn being read in classrooms and kept in school libraries as “domestic terrorists”; where FBI swat teams in full Robocop beat down the doors of Catholic, pro-life activists as if they were drug lords; where clear cases of self-defense are prosecuted as hate crimes; where lawyers are arrested and duck walked through county jails for the audacity of representing a client the Borg hates; and where people with regime-opposite opinions/affiliations are described as “f-cking animals” before being personally threatened and given the photobomb treatment.

Does anyone think “impairment” won’t be widened so the Borg can punish its enemies more? Especially when its members are openly talking about the need for Republicans, Trump voters, and conservatives to be “reprogrammed”? Sure, some of these people, like David Atkins and Katie Couric are small potatoes and nobodies. But Nikole Hannah-Jones, the Lady Frankenstein who won a Pulitzer for creating a freakazoid fantasy of American history that’s now being taught to grade schoolers? Hillary Clinton? If these power reservoirs are making this sentiment public, the vast layers beneath them in the left’s hierarchy are openly salivating for it. Redefinitions of the word will be cheered by them.

Since “impairment” probably will be redefined by the Borg, the kill switch is perfectly positioned to be weaponized in the future, another wheel in the social credit system in the process of being built here at home. Express an “extremist” view on Facebook? That might mean a week with a non-functioning car. Does your banking history show you donated to Ron DeSantis, Donald Trump, your local pro-life group, or even just your church (the one that still hatefully insists marriage is between a man and a woman)? You might be too dangerous to let on the road.

Americans will then be faced with a stark choice: Hold fast to their convictions or dilute them to gain the privilege of driving. And if you are still dependent on your car to go to work (you’re not going to live in a 15-minute city), or need to drive 200 miles to see your parents or your kids, what choice are you going to make?

But even if the kill switch were simply about saving lives and “impairment” were forever narrowly defined, implementing it would still be a dagger to independence. Today, the onus for being a responsible driver is on you. No fairy godfather prevents us from texting and driving, no good witches of the interstate protect us against highway hypnosis, no cricket with a top hat appears to warn us not to drink before sliding into the driver’s seat. Instead, we have to do what we ought and not what we want….

More importantly, according to these men,independence could only be maintained among a population that believed in, cherished, and strove for this idea of freedom.

This is why the archetype of the yeoman farmer was so powerful in the 18th century. The farmer was disciplined, hard-working, honest, prudent.Earning his livelihood by wrestling with nature cultivated the virtues necessary for him to be a self-governing citizen— virtues (it was expected) he would pass to his children, forming a continual cycle of past, present, and future. He and his family had the habit of independence. But this habit was not guaranteed. It could be lost like any other.

In 1798, John Adams warned that should Americans lose the virtues that made independence possible, should they display “in the most captivating manner the charming Pictures of Candour frankness & sincerity while … rioting in rapine and Insolence,” these United States would become “the most miserable Habitation in the World.” In many ways, we have already devolved into a nation of thumb-sucking perpetual teenagers. Look at zoomers crying on TikTok, at the academics and military brass bloviating about white anger, and at the rural communities ripped apart by drugs and despair. Even in the best scenario, nanny cars would be poison dressed as medicine.

If people are incapable of independence, they are incapable of self-government. Which raises the question: What will replace our form of government? Some hope for Red Caesar; others pant for Blue Sulla. Adrian Vermeule and his disciples pray for a 12th century-style Catholic monarchy complete with a state church; others see a national divorce. The most likely answer is AI.

For all the hysteria over Terminators, Skynet, and the complete erasure of the line between man and machine, the real dangers of AI are much more monotonous and deadly. James Poulos recently warned that the cracks and contradictions in the left — quite visible now because of the Israel-Hamas War — are yet another imperative for the Borg to become its namesake, for the bureaucracy to submit all policies and proposals (and with them all our lives) to an UberAlgorithm which will parse through the pyramid of oppression, identity politics, competing issues, claims, and counterclaims and render judgment from a digital throne of Solomon.

Between giving up their ideology and subserving us to an algorithm, the Borg will always choose to do what protects its power the most, even if that means ceding real authority to a little man behind a curtain who isn’t really there. In this scenario, the kill switch could move beyond reprogramming and make us part of itself. It’s possible that, in the future, how often and where you drive will be calculated by a host of different data points that transform us from human beings into manageable chunks of information, pawns moved on an endless chessboard.

The good news is that the final curtain hasn’t fallen yet.We can still be a free and independent people — if we can find the will to resist.

Attorneys for Kari Lake have made two more filings in their ongoing fight to overturn the stolen Arizona gubernatorial election, including a Petition for Transfer to send her appeal directly to the Arizona Supreme Court.

The Gateway Pundit has reported extensively on the evidence of illegalities presented in Kari Lake’s lawsuit. Newly discovered evidence shows that machine failures affecting tens if not hundreds of thousands of voters on election day were likely caused by intentional misconduct. Incorrect machine settings, printer settings, and ballot paper sizes utilized by Maricopa County caused machines at 60% of voting locations to fail on the day that Republicans turned out 3:1 to vote for Kari Lake and Republican candidates.

Because of changes made to the voting systems before election day, “at least 8,000 misconfigured ‘fit-to-page’ ballots occurred at 127 vote centers on Election Day,” and “vote center tabulators logged over 7,000 rejections every 30 minutes from 6:30 am through 8:00 pm.” Maricopa County does not dispute this accurate data derived from their system log files. This information was presented by We The People AZ Alliance in an Arizona Senate hearing earlier this year, along with evidence that tabulators rejected ballots nearly 250,000 times.

Lake’s Petition for Transfer and Reply Brief, both filed on Tuesday, urging the court once again to consider the “extraordinary new evidence presented in Lake’s motion for relief from judgment,” which was filed in May 2023.

In an October 15 Brief, Maricopa County “makes demonstrably false or misleading arguments to distract the Court from the evidence and admissions showing that Maricopa blatantly violated Arizona election laws, falsely certified it conducted L&A testing on October 11, 2022, and apparently rigged the November 2022 Election to fail on Election Day,” argues Lake’s team. Conventional Vaccines vs. COVID-19 Vaccines

Some doctors are now troubled by the risks posed by declining rates of conventional vaccinations and the potential for increased outbreaks due to vaccine-preventable diseases like polio.

Dr. Meissner said, "At this time, it is important for parents to consider a distinction between the benefits versus risks of the pediatric COVID vaccines and other childhood vaccines that have successfully controlled many infectious diseases."

Dr. Schaffner agreed, adding that children are encouraged to get immunized against COVID-19 and that more public health work is needed to encourage conventional vaccine takeup.

“Measles, polio, diphtheria, for example, are vague concepts to [parents]. And so, these diseases are not known, therefore not respected or even feared, leading to questions about the vaccine,” Dr. Schaffner said.

“I tell current medical students that before we had measles vaccine available in the United States, back in the 1960s, there were 400 to 500 children that died annually in the United States, secondary to measles and its complications,” he explained. “Their jaws drop. They have no idea.”

However, some doctors have become more cautionary about childhood vaccine recommendations, fearing denial and the potential coverup of side effects.

“There is a potential public health concern when children remain fully unvaccinated for all traditional childhood vaccines,” pediatrician Dr. Renata Moon, who previously worked as a professor of medicine at the University of Washington, wrote to The Epoch Times. “[But] the question on everyone’s mind is, ‘what safety data do we have for each childhood vaccine?’

“Many parents who used to follow the traditional childhood vaccination schedule have stepped back from vaccinating their children altogether. They have lost trust in recommendations from public health agencies and are taking a ‘safer to wait’ approach,” she added.

Dr. Cardenas echoed Dr. Moon with a similar statement. “I used to be 100 percent vaccinated,” she said, adding that the COVID era has made her realize she needs to do more research, and has similarly taken the safer-to-wait approach for now.

Dr. Husmann added that immunization does not guarantee a complete elimination of outbreaks, explaining that there have been measles outbreaks among both vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

In 2003, a measles outbreak occurred in a highly vaccinated boarding school in Pennsylvania. The school had a vaccination rate of 95 percent. Out of nine laboratory-confirmed cases of measles, only two were unvaccinated.

Other cases demonstrate the opposing scenario. In December 2022, a measles outbreak occurred in central Ohio. The jurisdiction estimated an immunization rate of 80 percent to 90 percent, yet of the 73 children infected, most (67) were unvaccinated.

The centuries-long recommendation to vaccinate stems from the notion that there is no trade-off for immunity against infectious disease. However, Drs. Husmann and Cardenas argue that childhood vaccines may also present long-term risks that are not well-known and rarely discussed.

Safety of Childhood Vaccines Scrutinized

Recently, childhood vaccines have faced renewed scrutiny. These include the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTaP) vaccines for their links to autism and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for its links to encephalitis.

Yet long-term vaccine safety data and vaccine studies are lacking, and this applies to all vaccines on the market.

For instance, the Haemophilus influenzae B vaccine (Hib), a four-dose series approved for infants and children aged 2 months to 5 years, had safety monitoring for only 30 days post-vaccination. The package insert for Infanrix, a DTaP vaccine, states that adverse reactions were monitored for only four days after vaccination.

In 2013, the National Vaccine Program Office commissioned the former Institute of Medicine (IOM) committee, now the National Academy of Medicine, to reexamine the evidence supporting safety claims for the CDC's childhood vaccine schedule.

The committee found that "few studies have comprehensively assessed the association between the entire immunization schedule or variation in the overall schedule” and health outcomes, and "no study has directly examined health outcomes" the way the committee was charged to address.

The committee further stated that no studies have been conducted “to determine the long-term effects of the cumulative number of vaccines or other aspects of the immunization schedule.”

While no long-term randomized, controlled trials exist for any vaccines, extensive research has compared vaccinated populations to unvaccinated. Randomized placebo-controlled trials are considered the gold standard in testing treatments.

A 2017 pilot study led by professor Anthony Mawson at Jackson State University compared vaccinated, partially vaccinated, and unvaccinated children aged between 6 and 12.

The researchers found that while fully and partially vaccinated children had significantly fewer cases of chickenpox and pertussis, they had 30 times greater odds of being diagnosed with allergic rhinitis and around four times greater odds of having allergies, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and autism. They also had about five times the odds of having a learning disability and almost four times the odds of having a neurodevelopmental disorder.

Mr. Mawson’s second study compared children who were unvaccinated, vaccinated, and vaccinated with preterm birth, which is a risk factor for neurodevelopmental deficits. The vaccinated children had almost thrice the odds of neurodevelopmental disorders, while preterm and vaccinated children had 14.5 greater odds of neurodevelopmental disorders than unvaccinated.

A 2020 study led by Brian Hooker, professor emeritus of biology at Simpson University, compared data of vaccinated and unvaccinated children collected from three different medical practices. The authors found that vaccinated children had nearly 4.5 greater odds of asthma and over twice the odds of developmental delays and ear infections.

Since these studies are not randomized and controlled, they do not indicate a causal relationship but suggest potential health concerns.

The study findings suggest that children may be trading long-term health for infectious disease immunity, Dr. Husmann said.

“We think that we’re making a choice between immunization and maybe some short-term adverse reactions like pain, swelling, fever, fussiness, or not feeling well for a few days,” Dr. Husman said, “but we are also giving your child a significantly increased risk of a whole host of chronic health conditions, including, autism, seizures, and asthma.

“You really don’t know if it’s worth it to try to prevent an incredibly rare infectious disease and put your child or yourself at risk of a chronic illness.”

An Opportunity for Safer Vaccines

While Dr. Husmann questions the safety of vaccines, he is keeping an open mind about adequately tested and safe vaccines in the future.

“I do not [want my patients to be] necessarily anti-vaccine; what I want them to be is vaccine freedom-friendly … I want my patients to be open and accepting of any vaccine that is truly safe and effective.”

Similarly, Dr. Cardenas agreed that it is a good thing that parents are proactively learning about these medications.

“Everybody should get instructed and educated on what is happening when you are being injected or even when you’re getting medicines. You should ask your doctor, what is this for? What are the side effects? I think the public is beginning to do that, and I think it is very good.”

Lockheed Martin Opens 25,000-Square Foot, $16.5M Missile Defense Lab

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Nov. 14, 2023 /PRNewswire/ – Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) today opened a $16.5M engineering facility at its Huntsville campus, introducing more capabilities for missile defense innovation in North Alabama.

This facility is a Lockheed Martin capital project and provides evidence of Lockheed Martin's investment in the Huntsville community, increasing opportunities for growth and advanced capability in North Alabama at the company's Huntsville campus. The new Missile System Integration Lab (MSIL) is where Lockheed Martin plans to conduct development, testing, and system integration for the nation's next long range ballistic missile defense interceptor – the Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
