I've noticed an interesting relationship between people's names and their lives. Probably some of this has to do with spiritual things.

 

At the time of Otto Warmbier's return to America and his subsequent death I found it interesting to look at his last name. The meaning of "warm" is obvious to speakers of English. The term "bier" is a bit archaic, however. Otto returned in very bad shape, apparently. Like our English phrase "death warmed-over". Note the meaning of "bier". The caps are from my rudimentary search on yahoo today.

 

Btw, this is a good reason, if you are a believer in God through Jesus, to pray about the names you give your children, in my humble opinion!

 

Not sure the significance but Otto apparently means "wealthy".

 

I think it is a good time to pray for Otto's surviving family.

 

In the Bible people's names were very significant. I'm now doing more study on name origins.

So what is that, exactly?

WASHINGTON (AP) โ€” An online conspiracy theory dubbed โ€œpizzagateโ€ ended Thursday with real-world consequences when a North Carolina man was sentenced to prison for arming himself with an assault rifle, traveling to the nationโ€™s capital and firing his weapon inside a neighborhood pizza restaurant.

Edgar Maddison Welchโ€™s โ€œill-conceived plotโ€ last year did โ€œactual damage to the lives of real people,โ€ a judge said before sentencing him to four years in prison.

Judge Ketanji B. Jackson said sheโ€™d never seen a case like Welchโ€™s, and she gave him a punishment on the upper end of guidelines, in part to send a message to others. If Welch believed an internet conspiracy theory that children were being harmed at the restaurant, he should have notified law enforcement, not attempted to take the law into his own hands, the judge said during Thursdayโ€™s hearing in U.S. District Court in Washington.

Jackson said it was โ€œsheer luckโ€ that no one was physically injured when Welch entered Washingtonโ€™s Comet Ping Pong restaurant on Dec. 4 armed with an AR-15 assault rifle and a revolver. He was there just about a month after the election of President Donald Trump to investigate unfounded internet rumors about prominent Democrats harboring child sex slaves at the restaurant.

As diners and staff fled, leaving half-eaten pizza and cups of soda, Welch went through the restaurant. At one point, he fired his AR-15 at a locked closet, but he discovered there were no children being held in the restaurant and surrendered peacefully.

Welchโ€™s sentence was just below the 4 ยฝ years prosecutors sought and above the 1 ยฝ years Welchโ€™s attorney asked for.

During the hearing, the 29-year-old Welch spoke briefly to apologize, saying he realized that his words โ€œcannot undo or change what already happened.โ€ In a letter filed with the court, he wrote that he is โ€œtruly sorry for endangering the safety of any and all bystanders who were present that day,โ€ but he didnโ€™t talk about the conspiracy theory that motivated him to act, saying just that he came to Washington โ€œwith the intent of helping people I believed were in dire need of assistance.โ€

The Supreme Court rejected former Hunter Biden business partner Devon Archer's appeal of his criminal conviction in connection to a scheme to defraud a Native American tribe.

 

Archer was convicted in 2018 and sentenced to just over a year in prison in 2022 for defrauding a Native American tribe of $60 million in bonds. The Supreme Court refused to hear Archer's appeal challenging his sentence on Monday.

 

Archer is out on bail, and the court's rejection of his appeal means his conviction and sentence will remain in place, which brings him closer to serving time in prison.

 

Hunter Biden, who served on the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma alongside Archer, was not implicated in the scheme.

 

Archer has denied that he intended to defraud anyone and claimed that prosecutors have relied on circumstantial evidence.

Arizonaโ€™s Presidential Elections have closed primaries, meaning that only registered Republicans or Democrats can vote in their partyโ€™s primary.

 

The Arizona Secretary of Stateโ€™s office reportedly acknowledged this issue and noted it is โ€œcurrently impacting all recognized party preference valuesโ€ in an email to Arizona county recorders. Adrian Fontes, who served as Maricopa County Recorder during the stolen 2020 election, is the current Arizona Secretary of State.

 

Still, the only example that was provided is for Republican voter registrations. The email reads,

 

Please, as you action VR Updates make sure your team verifies the correct voter party preference is selected until AVID is updated to account for this unexpected change. For example, when processing an EZ Voter registration the party may be marked as โ€œOtherโ€ and โ€œRepublican Partyโ€ is written in. This example record would need to have the party preference marked as โ€œRepublicanโ€.

 

In a way, this appears to be a push for open primary elections and rank-choice voting, which is already being pursued with a ballot initiative titled โ€œMake Elections Fair Arizona Act.โ€

 

Arizona Republicans have opposed this measure, citing โ€œvoter disenfranchisement and confusion,โ€ while Democrats have refused to comment on their stance, according to Fox 10.

 

Fontes, appearing to advocate against political parties restricting their primary elections, previously noted that the current open primary rule for Arizonaโ€™s regular primary elections does not apply to Presidential Preference Elections.

 

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, Adrian Fontes and Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer, the two most prominent election officials in Arizona, also spoke at an event in Phoenix last year to discuss election reform, where they both advocated for ranked-choice voting.

 

The Republican primary is expected to be more contested than the Democratic primary as liberal megadonors like Reed Hoffman pour massive amounts of money into Nikki Haleyโ€™s campaign. It appears that this may help Nikki Haley in Arizona, considering Democratsโ€™ plans to rig the primaries by registering as Republicans to vote against Trump.

CDC Labeled Accurate Articles As Misinformation, Documents Show

 

The top U.S. public health agency labeled multiple news articles as misinformation even though the articles were accurate, according to internal emails and experts.

 

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added the misinformation labels to articles from The Epoch Times in widely-circulated internal messages, according to copies obtained by The Epoch Times.

 

One of the articles reported on a peer-reviewed paper that found heart inflammation, or myocarditis, was more common after COVID-19 vaccination than after COVID-19 infection.

 

Nordic researchers reviewed electronic health records and counted 109 cases of myocarditis following COVID-19 infection compared to 530 after vaccination. Their study was published by the British Medical Journal.

 

An internal CDC email said that the study โ€œhas been picked up by anti-vax proponents as evidence that vax was more likely to cause myocarditis than COVID-19 infection,โ€ and provided a hyperlink to The Epoch Times article.

 

The Feb. 7, 2023, email listed the article under โ€œpoints of confusion/potential rumors/misinformation.โ€

 

The CDC did not list any data or other information supporting its label.

 

โ€œThe Epoch Times article should not be labeled as misinformation,โ€ Dr. Tracy Hoeg, a physician-scientist at the University of California-San Francisco, told The Epoch Times via email.

 

Dr. Hoeg said the Nordic study aligned with earlier research, including a paper published by JAMA Cardiology that found myocarditis rates were higher among some populations after vaccination compared to after infection.

 

Another CDC email claimed a story reporting on how the U.S. government was receiving royalty payments from Modernaโ€™s COVID-19 vaccine was inaccurate or misleading.

 

The Epoch Times article reported on how Moderna officials disclosed in an earnings call that the company entered a patent agreement with the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), sent a payment of $400 million, and would be paying additional royalties in the future.

 

โ€œAnti-vax proponents question Modernaโ€™s new patent agreement with NIAID, citing catch up payments and royalties as a โ€˜conflict of interest,โ€ the CDC email, dated March 1, 2023, stated.

OK, so I just came across a video on youtube. A man is playing a piano in public and filming it for youtube, that's his thing. A group of CCP related individuals show up behind him and start demanding that he doesn't show their face or voice in his video. (this is in the UK BTW, where as far as I know, in public people can legally film or photograph you). Watching the video instantly started alarm bells ringing. Kevin Morris Confirms He Owns Hunter Bidenโ€™s 10% Stake in a Chinese State-Backed Investment Fund

 

Kevin Morris, Hunter Bidenโ€™s Hollywood lawyer, verified to House investigators last week that he purchased Hunterโ€™s ten percent stake in the Chinese state-backed investment fund BHR Partners, confirming Breitbart Newsโ€™s exclusive in April, as initially revealed by non-for-profit Marco Polo.

 

Morrisโ€™s ownership of the stake raises questions about his intent for the acquisition, as related to his ongoing personal and business relationship with the first family, along with the business partnership he now has with a Chinese Community Party-linked fund.

 

Morris acknowledged he bought Hunterโ€™s stake only after pressure increased on Hunter to divest from the entity due to a conflict of interest upon President Joe Biden assuming the White House.

 

BHR Partners, an entity controlled by the Bank of China, has about $3 billion currently invested around the world, according to its website.

 

Morris stated he purchased the company because it was a โ€œgood business investment,โ€ a transcript obtained by Breitbart News shows. Morris only admitted to the acquisition after asserting the reason for purchasing the company was covered by the attorney-client privilege.

 

Morris performed due diligence on the entity holding the ten percent stake in BHR Partners, named โ€œSkaneateles LLC,โ€ he claimed, saying he knew the price Hunter initially paid for the stake. โ€œI saw, and I still see upside,โ€ he told investigators about the alleged investment.

 

It is unknown how much money Morris paid Hunter for the ten percent stake or if any money exchanged hands in the deal. โ€œI did the transaction because, you know, I evaluated it as a businessman, and I thought it was something that could be a very successful investment,โ€ he said.

 

The Bank of China, a state-owned bank, controls BHR Partners. The fund claims it maintains 22 billion Chinese Yuan (RMB) in various portfolio companies, translating to more than three billion USD. It reports investments in Didi Chuxing, a Chinese technology group; CATL, a lithium-ion manufacturer; Megvii, a deep-learning software developer; and Insilico Medicine, a biotechnology company.

 

Morris is a businessman. He runs a successful law firm โ€” launched in 1996 โ€” representing A-list celebrities, such as Matthew McConaughey, Ellen DeGeneres, and Scarlett Johansson. He also wrote and produced documentaries and helped negotiate a South Park deal for $900 million.

 

Roughly one week after meeting in 2019, Morris paid Hunterโ€™s IRS debts and reportedly lent him a total of $4.9 million for housing, car payments, and legal fees. Repayment of the debt is due after the 2024 election, Morris told investigators last week, a timetable raised as a concern by Republicans who fear Joe Bidenโ€™s possible reelection might change the terms of their business agreements.

 

โ€œMy only goal was and is to help my friend and client,โ€ Morris told investigators. โ€œIn this country, there is no prohibition against helping a friend in need with no ulterior motive.โ€

The Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) was aware of the issues with mail-in voting during the 2020 election cycle but censored social media narratives about the risks as alleged disinformation, according to agency documents.

 

CISA documents were released on Monday by America First Legal, showing the agencyโ€™s concerns about mail-in voting while it was also monitoring online opinions about such concerns.

 

"These documents demonstrate federal bureaucrats knew that there was no credible evidence supporting the claim that in-person voting spread COVID-19, and that mail-in and absentee voting were indeed less secure than in-person voting, precisely as President Trump, Attorney General Barr, and others had warned," said AFL Senior Counselor and Director of Oversight and Investigations Reed D. Rubenstein.

 

"Yet, the government and its allied social and legacy media companies covered up the truth, using unlawful censorship and bogus 'fact checks' to advance mass vote-by-mail schemes," he continued. "This 'mail-in ballot cover-up,' like Russia Collusion, Ukraine impeachment, and the Hunter Biden laptop suppression, shows how Deep State bureaucrats, liberal operatives, and their corporate allies combined to interfere in our Presidential elections. It is a monumental scandal."

 

America First Legal is suing CISA for 2020 records from its mis-, dis-, and malinformation (MDM) team. According to records obtained by America First Legal from its lawsuit, CISA knew that mail-in and absentee voting are less secure than voting in person. America First Legal has represented Just the News in some Freedom of Information Act cases.

CISA had made a chart by October 2020 listing the risks of mail-in voting.

The list of risks were:

  1. โ€œImplementation of mail-in voting infrastructure and processes within a compressed timeline may also introduce new risk.โ€

  2. โ€œFor mail-in voting, some of the risk under the control of election officials during in-person voting shifts to outside entities, such as ballot printers, mail processing facilities, and the United States Postal Service.โ€

  3. โ€œIntegrity attacks on voter registration data and systems represent a comparatively higher risk in a mail-in voting environment when compared to an in-person voting environment.โ€

  4. โ€œThe outbound and inbound processing of mail-in ballots introduces additional infrastructure and technology, increasing potential scalability of cyber attacks.โ€

  5. โ€œInbound mail-in ballot processes and tabulation take longer than in-person processing, causing tabulation of results to occur more slowly and resulting in more ballots to tabulate following election night.โ€

  6. โ€œDisinformation risk to mail-in voting infrastructure and processes is similar to that of in-person voting while utilizing different content. Threat actors may leverage limited understanding regarding mail-in voting processes to mislead and confuse the public.โ€

 

CISA also listed three โ€œmajor challenges with absentee votingโ€ by September 2020, noting โ€œthe process of mailing and returning ballots,โ€ the โ€œhigh numbers of improperly completed ballots (figures not yet released),โ€ and โ€œthe shortage of personnel to process ballots in a prompt manner.โ€

 

Despite being aware of the concerns of mail-in voting, CISA contracted accounting and consulting firm Deloitte to monitor and flag social media posts regarding the 2020 election and vote-by-mail. One such post that was flagged by Deloitte to CISA was from President Donald Trumpโ€™s Twitter feed, which said that there were โ€œbig problems and discrepancies with Mail In Ballots.โ€

CISA also formed the Election Integrity Partnership (EIP), a private-led consortium that policed and mass-reported alleged misinformation to social media providers ahead of the 2020 and 2022 elections. The Supreme Court accepted a case this term to evaluate the constitutionality of alleged federal coercion of private platforms to suppress disfavored narratives. Advocacy groups for journalists, academics, doctors, technologists and big business asked the court to tread lightly on federal powers.

 

EIP also noted in a 2020 election after-action report the importance of the Center for Internet Security, a nonprofit that participated in censorship of purported election "misinformation." CIS participated in censorship during both the 2020 and 2022 elections through its Elections Infrastructure Information Sharing & Analysis Center (EI-ISAC).

 

"EI-ISAC served as a singular conduit for election officials to report false or misleading information to platforms," according to the EIP report. "By serving as a one-stop reporting interface, the EI-ISAC allowed election officials to focus on detecting and countering election misinformation while CIS and its partners reported content to the proper social media platforms."

 

Abe Hamadeh, GOP candidate for Arizonaโ€™s 8th Congressional District, discussed issues with mail-in voting and the CISA documents on โ€œJust the News, No Noiseโ€ TV show on Monday.

 

Hamadeh, who served in the Army, said that he was deployed in Saudi Arabia during the 2020 presidential election and voted from overseas. However, after he returned home, he found multiple mail-in ballots were sent to his house.

 

โ€œWhen I came back home from my deployment, I had multiple mail-in ballots in my house that were not associated with my name โ€” they were prior tenants or prior owners,โ€ Hamadeh said. โ€œThe idea that the federal government was trying to basically spread propaganda that 2020 was safe and secure, and that there was no issue with the mail-in ballots when they themselves knew that this is a huge vulnerability โ€ฆ just shows you the lengths that the deep state goes to try to control the narrative and the propaganda,โ€ he later added.

 

Mike Benz, executive director of Foundation For Freedom Online, told Just the News on Monday that the CISA documents showed how this was a โ€œscandal because DHS was the entity responsible for censoring anybody who questioned mail-in ballots and questioning anything about them that might be fraud," or where there was "risk of fraud.โ€

He added that CISA โ€œpulled off the heist of the century to argue that as cybersecurity agency, they had the power to censor the internet because misinformation about elections is a cyber threat to critical infrastructure, the critical infrastructure being elections, the threat being disinformation, and cyber being internet related.โ€

Any tech fags out there that can help me out?

 

Several websites I have used in the past are now partially loading and can be viewed less than a second before the page goes completely blank.

 

Some I have figured out have prevented access to certain IP addresses associated with VPNs that work once ip is recycled but others wonโ€™t work regardless of VPN being paused or not. Cleared cache, deleted cookies etc but to no avail.

Kevin Morris invoked attorney privilege at least 17 times to avoid questions about Hunter Biden

In his deposition last week, Hollywood lawyer Kevin Morris and his lawyer invoked attorney-client privilege at least 17 times over questions related to his payments and work for Hunter Biden.

According to the transcript of the testimony reviewed by Just the News, Morris said that he began representing Biden about one week after the December 2019 California fundraiser for his father, Joe Biden, who became president in 2020. The details surrounding this meeting were previously reported by Just the News.

Morrisโ€™ early representation of Hunter Biden allowed him to invoke the privilege frequently, to avoid answering questions about his first meeting with the first son, how he paid Hunter Bidenโ€™s other attorneys and about the planning for Hunter Bidenโ€™s defiant speech in front of the Capitol while avoiding complying with his first congressional subpoena.

Specifically, Morris attempted to invoke the privilege regarding his acquisition of one of Hunter Biden's companies after Joe Biden's inauguration. Additionally, he denied claims that he was motivated by political concerns to help the first son solve his tax issues and stay afloat during his father's campaign, which was indicated by evidence from the IRS whistleblowers last year.

Morris did not respond to a request for comment from Just the News about his testimony.

According to the transcript, Morris claimed that his legal representation of Hunter Biden was โ€œglobal and completeโ€ and therefore argued that almost any detail of their relationship is off limits to congressional investigators. Yet despite this, Morris told the committee that he had not represented Hunter directly in the past three years.

In one example, Morris refused to answer how much in loans he provided to Hunter Biden to pay his legal fees.

โ€œSo have you paid millions of dollars for Hunter Bidenโ€™s legal fees via loans?โ€ an investigator asked.

โ€œMr. Morris only knows that from his attorney-client relationship with Mr. Biden and consequently cannot answer that question,โ€ Morrisโ€™ lawyer answered.

Morris also initially attempted to invoke the privilege when questioned about his acquisition of Hunter Bidenโ€™s Skaneateles โ€“ a company that owned a stake in Bohai Harvest RST, a Chinese company from one of Hunter Bidenโ€™s initial deals in the country. Morris acquired Hunterโ€™s stake in November 2021, less than a year after Joe Biden was inaugurated.

โ€œHow did it come up that you were going to purchase Skaneateles? Or why did you buy Skaneateles of all the companies that Hunter Biden was involved with? Why that one?โ€ investigators asked.

โ€œThatโ€™s privileged. I am not going to answer that because of attorney-client privilege,โ€ Morris responded.

However, after a brief recess from questioning, his attorney convinced him that he had to answer the question and Morris reversed course.

โ€œI did the transaction because, you know, I evaluated it as a businessman, and I thought it was something that could be a very successful investment,โ€ Morris said in his new answer.

โ€œ[B]ut I did diligence on the assets. I knew what โ€ฆ Hunter paid for it in the beginning, and I saw, and I still see upside,โ€ he continued.

Yet, earlier in the questioning, Morris was apparently not well informed on what Skaneateles was or what investments BHR makes.

โ€œWhat kind of company was Skaneateles?โ€ the investigators asked. โ€œI mean, I donโ€™t know. An LLC, I think,โ€ Morris answered.

โ€œAnd do you know what kind of investments that BHR makes?โ€ Morris was asked.

โ€œI knew better at one time. I remember going through them. I donโ€™t remember exactly what they were. I think they were โ€“ I donโ€™t know. I think they were infrastructure,โ€ he answered.

In an effort to justify his expansive attorney-client privilege claims, Morris also claimed, despite not representing his client directly for three years, he is โ€œlike a general counselโ€ in Hunter Bidenโ€™s โ€œvirtual corporation,โ€ meaning that he is involved in everything with the first son.

โ€œCounsel, in my job I represent high-profile individuals. โ€ฆ [H]igh-profile individuals have basically virtual corporations. And in those virtual corporations, they have all kinds of staff and assistants. You know, agents and managers โ€ฆ publicists. You know, whatever. And what I do is I oversee โ€ฆ sort of the squad. Sort of like a general counsel,โ€ Morris told the committees.

โ€œBut I am involved in everything. I am involved in everything. And the same is with Hunter. If you check my retainer agreements, youโ€™ll see that itโ€™s not โ€“ it says all matters,โ€ he continued.

A conservative legal group has raised concerns about Morrisโ€™ legal representation of Biden while he paid his bills and debts, alleging it could be a violation of California Bar rules.

America First Legal filed a complaint with the state bar against Morris for allegedly violating its Rules of Professional Conduct.

According to rule 1.8.5(a): โ€œ[a] lawyer shall not directly or indirectly pay or agree to pay, guarantee, or represent that the lawyer or lawyerโ€™s law firm will pay the personal or business expenses of a prospective or existing client,โ€™ according to the California Bar.

Yet, Morris confirmed to the committee that he loaned Hunter Biden millions of dollars from 2020 to 2024 that are recorded in promissory notes. Just the News reported in November that Morris had loaned at least $5 million to the younger Biden to cover his tax debts and living expenses.

In his testimony, Morris also told House investigators that he never spoke with Hunter Biden or his family members about politics, claiming that his help was not politically motivated, despite being a Democratic donor who supported Joe Bidenโ€™s presidential campaign.

โ€œSo itโ€™s your testimony here today that politically, that political risk had nothing to do with then-candidate Joe Biden; thatโ€™s your testimony?โ€ the investigators asked Morris.

โ€œCorrect,โ€ he answered.

Yet, previous reports from Just the News revealed how Morris was explicitly concerned with the political risk surrounding Hunter Biden tax debts specifically as he worked in early 2020 to remedy the situation.

In December, IRS whistleblower Joseph Ziegler provided a new batch of evidence to the House Ways and Means Committee from his teamโ€™s tax investigation into Hunter Biden, codenamed Sportsman.

The documents detailed a late January โ€œcrisis meetingโ€ held at Morrisโ€™ home in Los Angeles with Hunter Biden and his team of accountants and lawyers. The meeting was ostensibly to discuss Bidenโ€™s mounting tax issues.

Hunter Biden accountant Troy Schmidt told IRS, FBI and Justice Department investigators that the group did not discuss the tax returns at all, according to one interview memo Ziegler provided to the committee.

In an email to Schmidt that the IRS whistleblower turned over to Congress and that was sent shortly after the crisis meeting, Morris specifically highlighted the political risk of failing to file the returns in a timely manner.

โ€œEmergency is off for today. Still need to file Monday โ€“ we are under considerable risk personally and politically to get the returns in,โ€ Morris wrote Schmidt on Feb. 7, 2020.

โ€œSorry for the pressure earlier. Please send the issues list ASAP,โ€ Morris continued, expressing urgency.

Morris told the committees, to the best of his recollection, the political risk he referenced in the email was related to the first Donald Trump impeachment because Hunter Bidenโ€™s work for the Ukrainian energy company Burisma had become front and center as the proceedings unfolded. He claimed that his concerns had nothing to do with Joe Bidenโ€™s campaign.

Special prosecutor Nathan Wadeโ€™s divorce came into the spotlight after one of Trumpโ€™s co-defendants, Michael Roman, accused Wade and Willis of being involved in an improper romantic relationship that renders the district attorneyโ€™s officeโ€™s sweeping racketeering indictment โ€œfatally defective.โ€

 

Andrea Hastings, a lawyer for Wadeโ€™s estranged wife, argued Monday that Willis has โ€œunique knowledgeโ€ about Wadeโ€™s marriage and that her position as district attorney shouldnโ€™t protect her from divulging that information to assist in dividing the Wadesโ€™s marital assets.

 

Willis was subpoenaed earlier this month in the ongoing divorce case between Wade and his wife, Joycelyn, which began in 2021. โ€œSheโ€™s trying to hide under the shield of her position,โ€ Hastings said of Willis.

 

Willisโ€™s lawyer,Cinque Axam, said Monday that any knowledge Willis obtains could also be provided by Wade. โ€œYouโ€™ve got two partners in the case, one who is alleged to have some extramarital affair with Ms. Willis,โ€ Axam argued. โ€œIf that is the case โ€” if that is true, [Wade] has that information.โ€ โ€œThere are other means by which that information can be achieved in this case,โ€ he said.

 

Axam also said Willis does not share any bank accounts with Wade, nor does she determine how he spends his money โ€” โ€œno matter where it comes from,โ€ he said.

 

Last week, Wadeโ€™s wife in court filings accused Wade of purchasing multiple flights for himself and Willis in the months before they charged Trump and 18 others with attempting to subvert the stateโ€™s 2020 election results. The documents include bank statements that appear to show flights to San Francisco and Miami as the Fulton County district attorneyโ€™s office investigated Trump and his allies.

 

Judge Henry Thompson declined to absolve Willis from being deposed in the future but temporarily paused the requirement until after Wade has been deposed.

 

โ€œOnly after I hear what Mr. Wade has to say do I think I can make a determination of whether the proposed opponent has any unique knowledge about these issues,โ€ Thompson said. Thompson also agreed to unseal documents related to Wadeโ€™s divorce, after finding that the original order sealing the case was not properly entered.

 

The matter was brought to the courtโ€™s attention by Ashleigh Merchant, Romanโ€™s lawyer. A coalition of media outlets also filed to unseal the records. Roman, the defendant who originally brought attention to the alleged relationship, has asked a judge to dismiss the case against him and block Willis, Wade and the Fulton County district attorneyโ€™s office from further involvement in the case.

 

The district attorneyโ€™s office has repeatedly declined to comment on the romance accusations and indicated it will respond in court documents.

 

Judge Scott McAfee, who is overseeing Trumpโ€™s case, ordered Willis to address the accusations in writing by Feb. 2. McAfee also scheduled a hearing on the matter for Feb. 15.

Major M7.2 earthquake hits China โ€“ Fourth powerful quake within the last two days โ€“ Link to increased solar activity?

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) โ€” North Dakota Republican Gov. Doug Burgum announced Monday that he will not seek a third term as governor, over a month after he ended his bid for the GOP presidential nomination.

His recent endorsement of former President Donald Trump, and Trumpโ€™s praise of the little-known governor, have fueled speculation about Burgum serving in a possible second Trump administration. The governor told reporters his endorsement of Trump and a potential role for him are unrelated to his decision not to run. He said heโ€™s planning โ€œa very active last year in officeโ€ and โ€œto run through the tape hard.โ€

His decision creates an open race for the state governmentโ€™s top job in the sparsely populated, Republican-dominant state. Democrats havenโ€™t won a statewide election since Heidi Heitkampโ€™s U.S. Senate victory in 2012.

Burgum, 67, is a wealthy software entrepreneur who won an upset victory in 2016 over the stateโ€™s popular attorney general in the Republican gubernatorial primary election. He campaigned on a message of โ€œreinventingโ€ state government amid a $1 billion state revenue shortfall. He went on to win his first term and reelection in 2020 by overwhelming margins. His term ends in December.

He told reporters that part of his decision not to run is because of family, and he became emotional discussing his three adult children. Leaving office, he said the private sector has โ€œgigantic opportunities,โ€ and he isnโ€™t ruling out a run for future office.

โ€œI think impact is going to be what drives the decisions I make in the future. Wherever that path may be, itโ€™s going to be where I can have the biggest impact,โ€ Burgum said in a Capitol press conference. He called a vice presidential or Cabinet role โ€œhypothetical at this point in time.โ€

Burgumโ€™s next steps might very well be a return to the private sector, โ€œat least until something might unfold in the public service standpoint,โ€ said former Gov. Ed Schafer, a Republican who served from 1992-2000. A position in a potential Trump administration isnโ€™t assured, he added.

โ€œItโ€™s possibleโ€ Burgum might seek a U.S. Senate seat, though he โ€œdoesnโ€™t seem the Senate type only becauseheโ€™s an operations guy,โ€ Schafer said. But a Senate seat is an opportunity to affect national public policy, one of the reasons Burgum ran for president, said Schafer, who thinks it extremely unlikely Burgum would challenge Sen. Kevin Cramer for his seat on the ballot this year.

โ€œAlready everybodyโ€™s scramblingโ€ after Burgumโ€™s announcement, with the path clear for several potential or rumored Republican gubernatorial candidates, Schafer said. โ€œIt changes the chessboardโ€ if some incumbents shift their election plans; for instance, if U.S. Rep. Kelly Armstrong were to run for governor, the stateโ€™s sole House seat would open up, Schafer said.

North Dakotaโ€™s Republican Party will endorse a gubernatorial ticket at its convention in April in Fargo. But like what Burgum notoriously did in 2016, candidates are free to run in the June primary election to clinch the party nomination for November.

Burgum entered office at the height of the Dakota Access oil pipeline protests. He led the stateโ€™s response to the coronavirus pandemic with messages of staying โ€œNorth Dakota smartโ€ and urging โ€œpersonal responsibilityโ€ as COVID-19 cases soared. Heโ€™s also had to deal with terrible droughts, crippling winter storms and important questions of how to spend the stateโ€™s federal coronavirus aid and how to use the stateโ€™s ballooning oil tax savings.

As governor, Burgum championed a Theodore Roosevelt presidential library in the stateโ€™s colorful Badlands where the 26th president hunted and ranched in the 1880s. He and his wife Kathryn, a recovering alcoholic, prioritized recovery from addiction as a top issue in his administration.

Heโ€™s pushed income tax cuts with mixed results. He signed a sheaf of bills last year that opponents decried as harmful to transgender people, including a ban on gender-affirming care for children and restrictions on school athletic participation.

His relationship with lawmakers has been rocky. In 2020 and 2022, Burgum targeted the seats of fellow Republicans with millions of his own money, including the top House budget writer.

Burgum supported a term limits ballot initiative in 2022. The governor cannot be elected more than twice, and state lawmakers are limited to eight years in the House and eight years in the Senate. The term limits are not retroactive and do not prevent Burgum from running for a third or fourth term.

Hawley, McConnell in GOP standoff over nominees

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) isnโ€™t backing down from his standoff with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.)over two McConnell-backed nominees to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Hawley is standing firm despite growing pressure from Senate GOP colleagues, including Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), the senior Republican on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, who want to fill the GOP vacancies on the two agencies.

Hawley is holding upAndrew Ferguson, McConnellโ€™s former chief counsel, who is nominated to serve on theFTC, andTodd Inman, a former McConnell campaign aide, who is nominated to theNTSB.Inman also previously served as a chief of staff to former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao,McConnellโ€™s wife.

McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) tried to confirm Ferguson and Inman to fill Republican vacancies on the two agencies before Christmas,but Hawley blocked them.

Hawley in a Dec. 20 letter to McConnellsaid the nomineesneeded more vetting.

โ€œIf Republicans are planning to install dozens of Biden nominees for positions across the federal government โ€” without a vote โ€” in exchange for just a handful of our own selections, I want to be sure that we get our nominees right,โ€ Hawley wrote.

The Missouri senator held up the nominees after he blamed McConnell for stripping an amendment he sponsored from the annual defense authorization bill that would have expanded and extended the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act to cover individuals and families around St. Louis exposed to improperly stored nuclear waste left over from the Manhattan Project.

A month later, two vacancies on the five-member NTSB and the lame-duck status of NTSB board member Thomas Chapman โ€” an appointee of former President Trump whose term expired at the end of December โ€” are coming under increased scrutiny after a door plug blew off an Alaska Airlines flight at 16,000 feet earlier this month. One Senate GOP aide said the NTSB is being stretched thin by having to respond to the Alaska Airlines accident, which required Chair Jennifer Homendy to travel to Portland, Ore., earlier this month to oversee the investigation.

Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), who battled Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) last year over his holds on more than 300 military promotions, expressed frustration over how long it is taking to confirm nominees to key aviation oversight positions.

โ€œI pay very close attention to the issue, because aviation accidents in my state are way higher than in any other state for a whole host of reasons. So having the key safety team in for aviation is really important for Alaska,โ€ said Sullivan, a member of the Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over the safety board.

Cruz, the ranking member on the Commerce panel, is calling for both Inman and Ferguson to be confirmed quickly.โ€œI think itโ€™s certainly important to fill the position. I think Mr. Inman is a good nominee. The Commerce Committee voted him out with strong bipartisan support, and so I hope the Senate moves swiftly to confirm him,โ€ Cruz told The Hill.

Hawley met with Ferguson and Inman last week but still has concerns. โ€œFor both of them, we had good substantive talks โ€” lengthy talk with both. I think the next step in this process is I have a series of questions that I put to them that Iโ€™d still like to see answered,โ€ he said Monday evening.

Hawley said he didnโ€™t get the chance to vet the nomineesโ€™ views on key policy issues because he doesnโ€™t sit on the Commerce Committee. Hawley said โ€œitโ€™s importantโ€ that the Republican nominees be โ€œgood policy choicesโ€ and not primarily guided by political patronage.

โ€œI want to be sure they are actually folks who are good on policy,โ€ he said. โ€œThis doesnโ€™t seem to be much of a priority for our leadership, because Iโ€™ve gotten absolutely zero outreach from the Republican leader on this. So that tells me that this is not a big deal to them, at this point.โ€
