‘Uncoordinated’: Internal watchdog raps Pentagon’s UFO tracking effort

The Defense Department’s effort to identify UFOs is “uncoordinated” and could have overlooked threats to the United States, according to an unclassified version of a report from the Pentagon’s internal watchdog released Thursday.

 

In the report, originally released last August but containing classified sections, the DOD’s inspector general reviewed the department’s policies and procedures for detecting, reporting and analyzing UFO reports that have flooded the department in recent years.

 

After an investigation, the IG found that the Defense Department doesn’t have a “coordinated approach,” has developed varying processes for collecting and analyzing UFO reports, and has largely excluded regional military commands — which are responsible for detecting and deterring threats against the United States — in developing policies.

 

“We determined that the DoD has no overarching UAP policy and, as a result, it lacks assurance that national security and flight safety threats to the United States from UAP have been identified and mitigated,” the report said, using the acronym for unidentified anomalous phenomena, which is how the government refers to UFOs.

 

The UFO issue flared up last year after a highly-anticipated House hearing in which lawmakers bashed the Pentagon’s lack of transparency about how it was handling reports. The unclassified IG report was released “given the significant public interest,” according to a press release.

 

According to the report, DOD officials who spoke with the IG said they had been waiting for comprehensive guidance from leaders before developing their own strategies.

 

The inspector general found that the Pentagon’s response to UFO incidents is “uncoordinated and concentrated within each military department,” the report reads.

 

The Defense Department has attempted to address concerns from those who have reported UFO sightings, unveiling a secure form in October that service members and government employees can use to report sightings of the phenomena to a government office.

 

In the report, DOD offices largely agreed with or addressed recommendations from the inspector general.

The Georgia Senate is preparing to launch an extensive investigation into allegations that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was involved in an affair with a subordinate, potentially affecting the case against former President Donald Trump.

 

A nine-member special committee with subpoena powers is set to be appointed to explore these claims.

 

The move comes after Governor BrianKemp declined to address a criminal complaint against Willis, stating that the state ethics board is the appropriate venue, although it has been non-operational.

 

“The Georgia legislature has a responsibility to hold public officials accountable,” Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones said. “Recent reports have been deeply troubling and I appreciate Sen. Dolezal’s leadership on this issue.”

 

“[T]he Georgia Senate has the inherent power and authority to conduct investigations into … the expenditure of public funds [and] the conduct of public officers who discharge powers and duties under state law,” the resolution stated.

 

“[S]uch inherent powers include the authority to create special committees for the purpose of conducting investigations and to endow such committees with all the inherent powers of investigation possessed by the Georgia Senate, including the power to compel the appearance and testimony of witnesses and the production of records and the power to place witnesses under oath or affirmation,” it added. If approved, the committee would consist of six Republicans and three Democrats and would investigate the conduct of public officials, including the expenditure of public funds.

 

These allegations have emerged in the context of a case where Willis charged President Trump and others with racketeering charges related to the 2020 election.

On Thursday, the U.S. government sold the Federal Helium Reserve, a massive underground stockpile based in Amarillo, Texas, that supplies up to 30% of the country’s helium.

 

Once the deal is finalized, the buyer — which will likely be the highest bidder, the industrial gas company Messer — will claim some 425 miles of pipelines spanning Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma, plus about 1 billion cubic feet of the only element on Earth cold enough to make an MRI machine work.

 

Regulatory and logistical issues with the facility threaten a temporary shutdown as it passes from public to private ownership, and hospital supply chain experts worry the sale could have serious consequences for health care down the road — especially when it comes to MRIs.

To be sure, a Federal Helium Reserve shutdown wouldn’t mean that MRIs would suddenly power down across the country, said Soumi Saha, senior vice president of government affairs at Premier Inc., which contracts with helium suppliers on behalf of 4,400 hospitals in the United States. “But we are stressing about this shortage. From a health care perspective, MRI machines are the No. 1 concern.”

 

American patients undergo an estimated 40 million MRI scans each year to help diagnose cancer, brain and spinal cord injuries, strokes and heart conditions. The superconductive magnet-powered imaging machines give doctors clear, high-resolution images of areas inside the body they can’t see on X-rays and CT scans. But without liquid helium, the Earth’s coldest element, MRI machines can’t keep their magnets cool enough to generate these images.

 

The sale of the government’s stockpile of the nonrenewable element could exacerbate an existing supply shortage, Saha said.

 

A number of factors could trigger a shutdown of the facility that could last as long as three years, said Rich Gottwald, CEO of the Compressed Gas Association, a trade group that represents companies, including Messer, that buy up helium and sell it to customers including hospitals, semiconductor manufacturers and NASA.

 

The facility spans three states, each with its own laws. The federal government didn’t need to reconcile state-specific rules, but a private buyer would, he said. Another issue is that helium must be enriched before it can be used and a separate system is needed to do that. That enrichment system isn’t part of the federal reserve, but is privately owned by four private companies, including Messer; unlike the pipelines and helium itself, it wasn’t for sale.

 

“A new owner will need to create some sort of lease to use the enrichment unit, or build their own unit to enrich the helium,” Gottwald said. “There’s a whole host of issues that need to be resolved and the concern is, until they’re resolved, the system will need to shut down.”

 

In a letter in October urging the White House to delay the sale, the CGA and four other trade associations laid out what they see as the most critical issues at the facility. Two of the trade associations behind the letter, AdvaMed and the Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance, represent MRI manufacturers.

 

“Timely, critical patient care would suffer if helium supplies constricted further,” Scott Whitaker, AdvaMed’s CEO, wrote in an email to NBC News. “AdvaMed urges the White House to delay the sale and privatization of the Federal Helium Reserve until outstanding issues identified by the Compressed Gas Association are resolved.”

 

The sale has been in the works for more than a decade. Congress first mandated it through the Helium Stewardship Act of 2013. It was initially supposed to occur in 2021, but a series of delays — in part due to the same logistical and regulatory issues threatening shutdowns today — postponed the auction to Thursday.

 

In an emailed statement, a spokesperson from the U.S. Interior Department said the sale would not constrict helium supply.

 

“Sale of the reserve to a private party, as Congressionally mandated by law, is not expected to meaningfully change the availability of helium,” the spokesperson wrote.

Other sources of helium

There’s a finite amount of helium on Earth. The largest reserves are in massive underground pockets in parts of Algeria, Qatar, Russia and the U.S.

 

While the Texas stockpile is the largest source of helium in the U.S., it’s not the only one. There are a number of smaller, privately owned facilities — some of which are in Colorado and Wyoming — according to Gottwald.

 

Sourcing helium inside the U.S. or from Canada is the easiest and cheapest option. Transit time is an important factor: If the shipment takes longer than 35 to 48 days, the liquid helium will evaporate.

 

The two other biggest helium reserves are in Qatar and Russia.

 

“Shutting down the U.S. helium reserve would force a situation where we would have to increase our reliance on foreign sources, like Qatar and Russia,” Saha said. “Given the ongoing geopolitical concerns and tensions in those regions and shipping delays, it would increase concerns around potential shortages on U.S. soil.”

 

According to Phil Kornbluth, president of Kornbluth Helium Consulting, the U.S. hasn’t been able to tap into Russia’s helium supply because of strained trade relations and the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi rebels have forced Qatar to send liquified natural gas shipments, which contain helium, around the Cape of Good Hope, a route that adds at least 20 days to the journey.

 

Helium in health and science

Helium was already in shortage supply before the government sale. Currently, Kornbluth said, three out of five U.S. helium suppliers are rationing the element to prioritize life-or-death uses like MRI machines ahead of less-essential helium uses, like keeping party balloons afloat.

 

Across the University of California system, for instance, which includes 10 research campuses and six medical schools, the shortage has already hit scientists.

 

“We’ve been on and off allocation for a while from our helium suppliers,” said Jeremy Meadows, its executive director of strategic sourcing. “There’s a priority of allocation where health care goes first and research goes second.” This has been difficult for scientists whose laboratories use magnetic imaging for medical research, he said.

 

“Our helium-dependent research is only growing,” he added. Should the available supply decline further, he said, “I just don’t know how we position ourselves to get that supply.”

 

In a letter to the U.S. government last spring, the University of California’s chief procurement officer, Paul Williams, lamented that the cost of helium had already increased more than 400% in five years.

 

Further supply constriction, he wrote, “leaves the research and medical communities at a greater risk.”

 

For instance, the University of California has a powerful helium-reliant magnetoencephalography, or MEG, scanner, that doctors use to plan pediatric brain surgeries. Statewide, Williams said, there were only two of these scanners.

 

“If it runs out of helium, it will require multiple weeks to recool, delaying surgeries, or, in some circumstances, compelling surgeons to operate without detailed brain maps,” he said, adding that the MEG scanner has barely averted shutdown dozens of times over the past 10 years.

MRIs of the future

MRI manufacturers have responded to the uncertain future of helium with their own solutions. Both Philips and Siemens Healthineers recently started selling alternatives to traditional MRI machines, which hold 1,700 to 1,800 liters of liquid helium and require constant replenishment. Some models now require just 1 to 7 liters of helium and don’t need any replenishment. Spokespeople from both companies touted these newer models as cost-effective for hospitals, especially if helium prices keep rising.

 

But an MRI machine is a long-term investment, and many hospitals have been counting on their current, helium-dependent MRI equipment to last years, if not decades, more.

 

“Using the same magnet for 20 or 30 years is not unheard of,” said Dr. Scott Reeder, chair of the University of Wisconsin’s radiology department.

 

Premier’s Saha said uptake of lower-helium MRIs has been slow.

 

“There are capital costs associated with removing the old MRIs and installing new equipment, plus the manufacturers don’t have the capacity to switch out all MRI machines at 6,000 U.S.-based hospitals overnight,” she said. “There’s time required for that, and you can’t take off every MRI machine in the country, because that would impact patient care.”

 

Still, the uncertain helium supply has brought an uptick in interest in these newer models, Saha said. “We’re seeing health care providers trying to get ahead of this by inquiring about MRI systems that use minimal to no helium,” she said.

 

As the health care industry worries about what the Federal Helium Reserve sale could mean for meeting the existing MRI demand, Reeder said the demand keeps rising, too.

 

“MRI is playing an increasingly important role in detection, treatment, monitoring and prognosis of so many diseases, and we’re going to have to think carefully as a field about how to ensure the supply chain doesn’t get to a state of crisis,” he said.

 

That state of crisis hasn’t hit yet, experts stressed. Patients across the U.S. won’t suddenly face canceled MRIs and missed cancer diagnoses once the sale goes through.

 

But the future of this critical, lighter-than-air element is certainly in flux, Saha said, and the medical world is watching closely.

 

“Our hope is that health care will be prioritized, but that’s never a guarantee during any shortage of any item,” she said.

 

For now, Reeder suggested, helium consumers must be judicious. “It’s probably not good to use helium for party balloons anymore,” he said.

Why We Can’t Just Shrug Off the Fani Willis Scandal

In the past week, we’ve seen commentary from law professors and former federal prosecutors arguing that Fulton County (Georgia) District Attorney Fani Willis should not be disqualified—even though she hired as a special prosecutor Nathan Wade, a man she was allegedly dating, paid him nearly $700,000, and received vacations in return.

 

I disagree.

 

Before I get into why, a disclaimer. If these allegations are false, there is no basis to disqualify Nathan Wade or Fani Willis.

 

There is no reason why hiring an inexperienced person for this role and paying him a lot of money should, by itself, have any impact on the Donald Trump RICO case Willis is prosecuting. We can expect a hearing on these allegations in February, and if Judge Scott F. McAfee finds them not to be credible, the case will continue as it was.

 

It seems like those facts may not be in dispute, however. After the allegations were made public, Willis gave a speech decrying the expectation that black women be perfect, and comparing herself to Martin Luther King, Jr.—who was also tormented over his personal life by his political enemies.She claimed that Wade’s race, and not his limited criminal litigation experience, was the basis of public skepticism, and noted that people had not scrutinized the other two special prosecutors, who are white, about their credentials.

 

But there are good reasons for this. The other two special prosecutors are incredibly qualified. For instance, Anna Cross is a former DeKalb County assistant district attorney who handled dozens of felony appeals and argued important motions for Fulton County. John Floyd is widely considered Georgia’s leading expert on state RICO prosecutions and helped draft the law.Combined, they billed $116,000 (less than a quarter of Wade’s total).And according to an agreement obtained by the Daily Caller, Floyd appears to have been paid about $100 less per hour than Wade.

 

In her speech, Willis argued that Wade was competent because he had been hired as special counsel by a white Republican when Cobb County hired him to conduct an investigation into jail deaths.But a local news station successfully arguedthat the investigation was only launched to prevent the public from filing open records requests into the deaths. At the hearing, Nathan Wade admitted that,despite spending five monthstalking to deputies and investigating the issue, he hadfailed to keep a single note. Cobb County quickly settled and turned the papers over. This suggests that Wade might not have been selected because he was especially diligent,but rather because he could be trusted to help keep a secret.

 

The man’s credentials are, regardless, a bit of a sideshow. They are relevant only to suggest that there was a personal relationship between Willis and Wade. Itcertainly doesn’t help that Wade filed papers to divorce his wife the day after Fani Willis hired him. But even if he were indisputably the best person possible for the role, he was paid $654,000, and Willis made choices throughout her prosecution that seem, in hindsight, calculated to require him.

 

Take the special grand jury, for instance. In 2022, Fulton County announced that it would use a special grand jury whose purpose would not be to indict anyone, but instead to gather evidence. These kinds of grand juries are very common in federal practice, but quite rare in Georgia.

 

And at the time this special grand jury was convened, it was already indisputable that Donald Trump had lied to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in the wake of the 2000 election, and sent Rudy Giuliani to lie to the state’s General Assembly, and encouraged fake electors to certify that they were real electors. In other words, the makings of a hard-to-challenge criminal conviction were already there.But instead, Wade was broadly used during those special grand jury proceedings, and he earned hundreds of thousands of dollars helping to conduct them. We now see the price of those delays, as Fulton County struggles to try the former president before the November election…

That gets us to the law. In 2022, Superior CourtJudge Robert McBurney disqualified Fulton County from presiding over the prosecutionof Lt. Governor Burt Jones becauseFani Willis endorsed his political opponent, Democrat Charlie Bailey. In the order, the judge notes that there was an “actual” conflict of interest. This “does not mean that… Jones has definite proof that an investigative decision was made explicitly to benefit candidate Bailey. This rarely, if ever occurs… the conflict is actual becauseany public criminal investigation into [then-]Senator Jones plainly benefits Bailey’s campaign, of which the district Attorney is an open… supporter.”

 

The standard to disqualify Fulton County here is not whether Fani Willis actually made her decisions to benefit Nathan Wade. It’s plausible that she would have made the exact same choices without the personal relationship.But if her choices to extend or prolong the investigation benefit a romantic partner, who is paying for her meals and vacations, that is an actual conflict.

 

When a Georgia judge was found having sex with a public defender outside the courthouse, the courts did not hesitate to find that this undisclosed sexual contact required new trials for the accused. Just as here, the guilt or innocence of those accused was irrelevant. The conflict of interest required a new trial.

 

So what happens next?Judge McAfee has stated his intention to hold a hearing in February to look over the truth of these allegations. If they are true, the case will not be dismissed, but it is likely that he will disqualify Fani Willis, which, under Georgia law, will require disqualifying her entire office. The case will then go to the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, which will decide who the case can go on to next.

 

In the best-case scenario, the case will find its way to someone like Sherry Boston in DeKalb County. She’s a long-time district attorney who is not prone to seeking the limelight. She’s in a blue part of the state. But even if everything goes as smoothly as humanly possible, it is difficult to imagine trying the former president before the November election.

 

And it’s also possible the case may go to someone who will choose to dismiss it. It may be that allFulton will have to remember Fani Willis by is an epidemic of jail deaths, a jail-crowding investigation by the ACLU, and a successor who promises to do better.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. ATLANTA — As the special prosecutor helping to lead the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office’s prosecution of former President Donald Trump is under mounting scrutiny, records show Nathan Wade’s conduct was called into question years earlier when he admitted in court that he “destroyed” notes.

Wade has faced an increasingly bright spotlight after Ashleigh Merchant (no relation to the author of this report), a defense attorney representing Michael Roman in the 2020 election case, filed a motion accusing Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Wade of engaging in “an improper, clandestine personal relationship.”

 

It is important to note: the filing did not provide concrete evidence in support of its allegations.

However, Wade’s conduct has been questioned before.

 

Following a series of inmate deaths within the Cobb County Jail, 11Alive filed an open records request in 2020 to better understand the circumstances surrounding the in-custody deaths. Specifically, 11Alive sought the “complete criminal and internal affairs case files” pertaining to three Cobb County inmates.

 

The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office declined to release the records, despite the fact that their attorney acknowledged two of the files “were previously released to members of the public,” according to court records from the time.

 

Their reasoning? The cases had been “reopened” as part of a broader investigation by “an independent law firm” into inmate deaths, according to an email from a Cobb County attorney included in a court filing.

 

But 11Alive reporting at the time raised questions about the authenticity of the investigation and 11Alive attorneys filed suit to release the records.

 

In one filing, Sheriff Warren’s attorney wrote that over the course of about five months, “both Nathan Wade and his law partner” had “met with numerous staff members and inmates and reviewed hundreds of files.” According to the document, “the estimated time for completion of the review [was] mid-October.”

 

That document was filed October 9, 2020. At a hearing three days later, Wade said as of the time of the hearing, he had no records of his investigation.

 

11Alive attorney Derek Bauer asked: “You do not have a single record in your possession that’s associated with the review and assessment that you’ve been engaged to undertake?”

 

“I do not,” Wade responded. He said his law firm didn’t have any either. When pressed, Wade said he had created work product, “just not in the form of documents, communications, or records memorializing, reflecting evidence, or relating to the work.”

 

11Alive’s attorney asked what that work product was. Wade said he kept it in his mind. “I have obviously my brainchild, what’s going on in my mind about it,” said Wade. “That’s what I have.”On the occasions when Wade did take paper notes on interviews, he said he destroyed them.“Got done with it, destroyed it, and walked out,” said Wade.

 

In an order ruling in favor of 11Alive and compelling the Cobb Sheriff’s Office to release many of the initially-requested case files, Cobb County Superior Court Judge A. Gregory Poole dismissed all claims against Wade after finding that “there is no evidence that defendant Wade possesses any documents or other materials subject to the Open Records Act request.”

 

But Judge Pool also noted Wade had “not produced any reports or other documentation of his review” and had “no timetable for compiling and releasing a report.”

 

Calls to Nathan Wade’s law office and the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office seeking comment for this story were unreturned as of the time of publication.

Federal Court Justice Richard Mosely said in Tuesday’s ruling he could not support a conclusion that the 2022 convoy created “a critical, urgent and temporary situation” that was national in scope and could not be dealt with effectively under any other Canadian law.

THE 17-JUDGE PANELat the International Court of Justice in The Hague issued a series of rulings on Friday about Israel’s conduct during its war against Gaza that constitute a significant legal defeat for Israel and its chief defenders, the United States and Germany.

 

It found that there is a basis to proceed with the case against Israel for genocide and that South Africa had solid foundation to bring its case before the world’s highest court. The ICJ’s chief judge, Joan Donoghue, said provisional measures against Israel were necessary because “the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is at serious risk of deteriorating further before the court renders its final judgement.” The full proceedings against Israel will take many years to complete.

 

At the same time, the court did not go as far in its rulings as South Africa wished and did not explicitly order Israel to immediately halt its military attacks against Gaza or to lift its state of siege. Instead, it ordered Israel to “take all measures within its power to prevent the commission of all acts within the scope of Article II of the Genocide convention.”

 

“Israel must take immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance to address the adverse conditions of life faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” the court saidOpens in a new tab. It also ordered Israel to halt and punish incitement to genocide, to preserve any evidence of violations of the Genocide Convention by its forces or personnel, and to submit a report on its compliance with the court’s orders within one month….

Georgia Senate Ethics Committee Passes Bill to Remove Raffensperger from Board of Elections – And Grant the Board Authority to Investigate Him

 

Via Behizy: The Georgia Senate Ethics Committee has passed a bill that would remove Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger from the Board of Elections and grant the board authority to investigate him for election law violations

 

The bill will be voted on by the full senate in the coming weeks and should pass both houses easily.

 

The bill would also allow the BOE to investigate local election officials as well. More importantly, the Board would have the power to hire their own investigators as opposed to relying on the Secretary of State’s office to do so.

Georgia’s Secretary of State could find himself under investigation by the State Board of Elections under the terms of legislation proposed in the Georgia Senate.

 

Senate Bill 358 would give the Board of Elections the power to investigate both the Secretary of State and local elections officials, and how those officials conduct elections. It also gives the Board the power to hire its own investigators instead of relying on the Secretary of State’s office to conduct investigations.

 

Senator Max Burns, a Republican from Sylvania, chairs the Senate Ethics Committee. He is also a sponsor of the bill. He said that the bill was driven, at least in part, by a debate among Board of Elections members last year.

 

“Last year, in the December meeting of the state election board, there was some discussion about whether or not the board had responsibility and oversight of the Secretary of State and the Office of the Secretary of State and their elections division.,” Burns said. “They split on that 2-2.”

 

Burns told his colleagues on the Senate Ethics Committee that the legislation was requested by members of the Board of Elections.

 

“We received communication from a member of the election board and then the Chair of the state Election Board,” he said. “So the chair of of the state election board in a letter to the Honorable Jon Burns, Speaker of the House and the Honorable Burt Jones, Lieutenant Governor of Georgia, requested that the legislation clarify the responsibility of the state election board and and its role in oversight.”

 

The bill would also remove the Secretary of State from the State Elections Board.

Covid has exhausted itself – top Russian epidemiologist

Covid-19 has lost its pandemic potential in the years since it was flagged by the World Health Organization, Russia’s former chief health inspector Gennady Onishchenko has said.

 

Onishchenko’s statement comes after the Russian consumer rights and wellbeing watchdog Rospotrebnadzor stated earlier this month that the peak of Covid-19 infections had passed in Russia and that new mass vaccination campaigns were no longer necessary. It was noted, however, that people should nevertheless remain vigilant, as coronavirus cases still grow seasonally.

 

In an interview with RIA Novosti published on Thursday, Onishschenko, who is currently the deputy president of the Russian Academy of Education, acknowledged that over the years of the pandemic, up until the announcement of its conclusion by the WHO, the coronavirus had mutated and caused several serious waves of infections, including fatal ones.

 

“New strains may still appear, [the virus] is constantly mutating,” the academic said. He added, however, that “this coronavirus, by all indications, has exhausted its pandemic potential.”

 

Covid-19 initially emerged in late 2019 and developed into the most widespread epidemic in nearly a century. In the three years since, the disease has killed an estimated seven million people around the world. The Lancet medical journal has suggested that number may even be higher at 18 million.

 

At the recent Davos Forum in Switzerland, world leaders also discussed a ‘Disease X’ pandemic - a hypothetical virus postulated to be 20 times deadlier than Covid-19. Israel's Reputation Takes A Hit In World Court Genocide Case

 

Israel has suffered its first major setback in the International Court of Justice (ICJ, or also "World Court") genocide case brought against it by South Africa, and thus has also suffered a possible hit to its reputation on the global stage.

 

The Hague-based court has ordered Israel to take all measures capable to prevent acts of Genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, but it stopped short of ordering a ceasefire. The interim ruling will of course remain merely symbolic as the World Court has no power or mechanism whereby it can enforce the verdict. It asserts that South Africa's case has legal merit and can proceed.

 

The Friday directive comes ahead what's expected to be a future, final ruling - and it comes as international pressure grows on Israel to reach a ceasefire - which the Netanyahu government is reportedly seeking in offering its 2-month pause plan in hopes of gaining the release of all captives.

 

The Palestinian Authority hailed the ruling, stating "The ICJ ruling is an important reminder that no state is above the law or beyond the reach of justice," according Foreign Minister Riyadh Maliki. "It breaks Israel’s entrenched culture of criminality and impunity, which has characterised its decades-long occupation, dispossession, persecution, and apartheid in Palestine."

 

Current president of the ICJ Judge Joan Donahue said however that the "catastrophic situation" in Gaza could get much worse by the time the final verdict in the case gets delivered while explaining why the provisional directive is necessary.

 

Thus this ruling points to the likelihood that things won't go Israel's way in the end. But again, this is all highly symbolic yet still hugely significant as it impacts Israel's global standing, and opens it up to potential isolation from some countries, and could help the BDS movement (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) gain greater steam. Israeli leaders have long lobbied on a global level against the BDS movement, often labeling it "antisemitic".

 

South Africa's legal submission to the World Court alleges "acts and omissions by Israel" which are "genocidal in character" as they are committed with the intent "to destroy Palestinians in Gaza" - which in essence targets a national, racial and ethnic group.

The Russian president has accused Ukraine of shooting down the aircraft withAmerican or French missiles

 

Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, the GUR, knew there were prisoners of war aboard a Russian military transport plane shot down by Kiev’s forces, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.The full story of the shootdown will “become clear in a couple of days,” he added.

 

The IL-76 military transport plane was shot down over Russia’s Belgorod Region on Wednesday morning. Everyone on board – 65 prisoners, six crew members, and three Russian soldiers – died. The Russian Defense Ministry claims that the plane was brought down by Ukrainian anti-aircraft missiles while en route to a prisoner exchange in the city of Belgorod, located near the Russia-Ukraine border.

 

The GUR was aware that Ukrainian prisoners were traveling on the plane, Putin said on Friday, according to RIA Novosti.

 

“The entire current Kiev regime is based on crimes committed daily, including against its own citizens,” Putin said. “The [GUR] knew that we were transporting 65 military personnel there … and knowing this, they struck the plane.”

 

In a statement issued on Wednesday night, theGUR did not deny that the jet was taken out by Ukrainian forces. Instead, the agency said that it was unsure whether the prisoners would be taken to the exchange point by air or other means, and that it “was not informed about the need to ensure the safety of the airspace” over the border region.

 

Putin said that material seized from the crash site suggests that an American or French air-defense missile was used to bring down the plane, and that exactly how the aircraft was shot down “will become clear in a couple of days.”

 

“The results of the investigation into the IL-76 case will be published so that the Ukrainian people know”what happened to their soldiers, he stated.

 

Russian State Duma Defense Committee chief Andrey Kartapolov has also alleged that Western weapons were used to target the flight, claiming that American Patriot or German Iris-T missiles were fired at the jet. A French military source told Radio France on Wednesday that a Patriot missile had struck the fatal blow.

 

“All currently available data points to a deliberate, premeditated crime,”Russia’s deputy representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, told a meeting of the UN Security Council on Thursday.“The Ukrainian leadership was well aware about the route and means by which [the Ukrainian] soldiers would have been transported to the agreed exchange point,” he claimed, alleging that “the regime in Kiev had decided this time to sabotage [the swap] in the most barbaric way.”

“The ADL, and similar organizations, are a key driver of government weaponization,” Mike Howell, the director of the Oversight Project, a division of the Heritage Foundation, told The Daily Signal. “They provide the phony predication and intellectual cover in order to point the people with guns at their enemies. Our investigative work continues to expose examples of these groups driving government action.”

 

The Extremist Landscape

Oversight’s Freedom of Information Act request to Washington State Fusion Center (a “unified counterterrorism” center) turned out a February 2023 email on “the extremist landscape” from the ADL. The email was sent to Tyler Phelan, an intelligence analyst at the center, from the ADL’s “Law Enforcement” address.

 

The email bears the subject line: “White Supremacist Fight Clubs, Anti-LGBTQ+ Hate.” It then paints a picture of the “extremist landscape:” threats of Islamic terrorism, an alleged rise in white supremacist crews encouraging violence, and “online amplifiers of LGBTQ+ Hate” promoting “false narratives, escalating harassment of LGBTQ+ individuals.”

Security at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant ‘extremely fragile’ – IAEA

The danger of a major incident at the facility is “very real,” agency head Rafael Grossi has warned

 

More should be done to minimize the risk of a major accident at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, warned at a UN Security Council meeting on Thursday.

 

The Zaporozhye facility, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been under Russian control since the outbreak of hostilities with Ukraine two years ago. The facility has also hosted a monitoring mission sent by the UN nuclear watchdog since Septermber 2022.

 

In his report on the IAEA’s work to secure and monitor the situation around nuclear facilities in the Ukraine conflict zone, Grossi stated that the “nuclear safety and security situation at the ZNPP [Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant] – in particular – continues to be extremely fragile.”

 

He explained that although six of the plant’s reactors have been shut down since mid-2022, the potential dangers of a major nuclear accident “remain very real.”

 

Since the start of Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine, Moscow and Kiev have regularly accused each other of attacking the ZNPP. However, the Russian Defense Ministry noted in November that the number of incidents had significantly diminished in recent months.

 

The watchdog chief noted that while the plant had not been shelled for a considerable time, military activities continue to play out in the region and sometimes in the vicinity of the ZNPP. Members of the IAEA mission have reported rockets flying overhead close to the facility, he added.

 

In a separate report last week, the IAEA also noted that Russia had reinstalled mines along the perimeter of the plant. Moscow has explained, however, that there is nothing “sensational” about the presence of landmines in the buffer zone near the facility, adding they only pose a threat to “rats, crows, and potential saboteurs.”

 

Meanwhile, Russia’s top spy, Sergey Naryshkin, claimed in an interview with RIA Novosti on Friday thatWestern intelligence services, particularly Britain’s MI6, have been preparing Ukrainian reconnaissance groups for provocations at nuclear power plants in Russia, including the ZNPP and a nuclear facility in Kursk.

 

In October, a Ukrainian UAV rammed into a nuclear waste storage facility during an attack in Kursk Region in western Russia. Several more drones were also downed in the vicinity of the Kursk facility during that attack, local authorities reported at the time.

 

Moscow has accused Kiev of deliberately targeting nuclear facilities throughout the conflict, claiming that theUkrainian government has no qualms about resorting to “nuclear terrorism” and sparking a full-scale nuclear disaster that would affect the whole of Europe.

Department of Defense Inks $235.8 Million Contract for Anthrax Vaccines

 

Biopharmaceutical company Emergent BioSolutions (EBS) signed a massive $235.8 million contract with the Department of Defense to supply the U.S. military with its BioThrax anthrax vaccine.

 

Yahoo Finance reported the Biothrax anthrax vaccine is expected to be used by all branches of the U.S. military.

 

The Gateway Pundit previously reported that the FDA approved Emergent BioSolution’s Cyfendus anthrax vaccine for adults 18-65 in July of last year.

 

Just months later after its approval, Emergent BioSolutions announced that the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) “exercised an option valued on an existing deal to procure additional doses of its recently approved anthrax vaccine Cyfendus (AV7909).”

Emergent BioSolutions EBS signed an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) procurement contract for a maximum value of up to $235.8 million with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to supply its anthrax vaccine BioThrax.

 

The vaccine is intended for use by all branches of the United States military as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for anthrax disease.

 

The procurement contract consists of a five-year base agreement ending on Sep 30, 2028, with an option to extend the contract for an additional five years to Sep 30, 2033.

 

Before the end of the initial five-year base period, the DoD should place a minimum guaranteed purchase order for $20.1 million worth of the vaccine product. For the following years, the annual order size should be at least $20 million for a total value of up to $235.8 million.

 

In recent months, the Federal governmet and state officials have been preparing for a possible anthrax outbreak.

Russian security service detains two Ukrainian spies

The FSB claims the two Russian citizens were collecting information about Russian military facilities and handing it over to Kiev

 

Russia’s security service (FSB) has apprehended two men on suspicion of working for the Ukrainian intelligence service, the body’s press office revealed on Friday. The suspects had allegedly been gathering information on Russian military facilities and units and sharing it with Kiev’s representatives in exchange for money.

 

Since the start of Moscow’s military campaign against the neighboring country inFebruary 2022, the FSB has reported arresting dozens of suspects, both Russian and Ukrainian nationals, who are believed to have either been spying for Kiev or carrying out acts of sabotage or terrorist attacks on Russian territory.

 

In a press release on Friday, Russia’s Federal Security Service said that the latest arrests took place in the city of Rostov-on-Don, located not far from the border with Ukraine. The two suspects, who areboth Russian citizens, were charged with high treason, the FSB added.

 

According to the authorities, the men had contacted the Ukrainian intelligence service on their own, and were tasked with observing Russian military units that took part in military action against Ukraine.

 

The FSB has also released a video clip depicting the arrest of the suspects, apparently outside of a Russian military base.

 

A court has placed both men in pre-trial detention.

 

Last July, the FSB detained three Russian citizens in the southern region of Voronezh on suspicion of providing information on Russian military facilities and transport infrastructure to the Ukrainian radical group ‘Right Sector’.

 

During interrogations, one of the men revealed that he had been tasked with, among other things,gathering information on the whereabouts of a Russian fighter pilot, as well as staging fires and explosions at railwayand industrial facilities in Voronezh Region.

 

Another high-profile case from last summer involved a neo-Nazi group, members of which were accused of plotting the assassination of RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan and journalist and former presidential candidate Ksenia Sobchak at the orders of the Ukrainian intelligence service.

The piece took direct aim at The Grayzone, maliciously associating our factual reporting on friendly fire orders which led to many Israeli deaths on October 7 with Holocaust denial.

As many people know, attorney Dr. Reiner Feulmich who had been working on a project known as the “Second Nuremberg,” was arrested on October 12th by German authorities in Mexico where he and his wife had been staying. He was taken back to Germany where has now been imprisoned for a little over three months now and now has very little contact with the outside world. There are only 2 telephones in the unit, but he is not allowed to speak unsupervised, and there is very little supervision available due to a lack of personnel, according to Katja Woermer, Dr Fuellmich’s legal representative in an interview on the German Bittel Tv and reported in the Truth Summit on the 21st of January.

 

Katja says “As for something being done on the legal level, some things were not done within the set time limits and a decision should be made on this within the next week two. One must have patience. Things are still not public, so there is still a need to keep matters private. There is a good chance you will be able to hear Reiner within the next week or two.”

 

As for Reiner, he is still optimistic and happy to be working with an international team. He has been moved, and now does not have a TV, which makes the days even longer. He has now watched a few movies. For instance, he was watched Gone With the Wind 10 times!!! So he must have a romantic side.

ISRAELI ARMY ORDERS EVACUATION OF KHAN YOUNIS REFUGEE CAMP AS BATTLE RAGES IN GAZA

 

On January 26, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) ordered the residents of several western neighborhoods in the city of Khan Younis to evacuate to the nearby al-Mawasi area in the southern Gaza Strip.

 

Lieutenant Colonel Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, published a map of the zones that need to be evacuated alongside the announcement. The zones include the al-Nasr and al-Amal neighborhoods, the Khan Younis refugee camp, and the city center.

 

Earlier, the IDF said in an update that the 98th Division killed dozens of Hamas fighters and the Air Force carried out a wave of strikes in Khan Younis.

 

Overnight, IAF fighter jets struck several Hamas sites in the city, including apartments used by fighters, weapons depots, observation posts and staging grounds, the IDF said.

 

In addition, the Paratroopers Brigade of the 98th Division spotted five Hamas fighters entering a building, and directed an airstrike on them.

 

Nearby, the Maglan unit spotted four Hamas fighters who had fired an anti-tank missile hours earlier, and directed a fighter jet to strike them, the IDF said, adding that several more fighters were killed by troops in the area.

 

The Givati Brigade, meanwhile, eliminated a six-man Hamas cell with tank shelling and sniper fire in the Khan Younis, the IDF said.

 

Separately, the IDF released footage showing an airstrike that targeted a three-man cell of Hamas in Khan Younis. The airstrike was called in by soldiers of the Border Defense Corps’ 636th Combat Intelligence Collection unit.

 

Meanwhile, in northern Gaza, the IDF said that fighter jets struck several Hamas sites, including a building that was booby-trapped, an anti-tank launch position, and a tunnel shaft, while reservists of the 5th Brigade killed several Hamas fighters with tank shelling and by directing airstrikes in the area.

 

The IDF also announced that the Navy also carried out strikes along the Gaza coast overnight, as part of support for troops of the Nahal Brigade who were maneuvering in the Strip.

 

Recent battles in Gaza were not without losses for the IDF. A revest Sergeant Major from the Combat Engineering Corps’ 8170th Battalion was killed in the southern part of the Strip. His death has brought the number of Israeli troops killed since the start of ground operations to 220. More than 1,200 others have been wounded so far.

 

Meanwhile on the Palestinian side, the death toll from the Israeli attack has exceeded 26,083, according to the latest update by the Hamas-run health ministry. More than 64,487 others have been wounded. Women and children make up most of the casualties.

 

According to recent reports, talks on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of some of the Israeli hostages there gained some momentum in recent days. The United States, Egypt and Qatar are playing a key role in the indirect talks between Hamas and Israel. However, a deal may not come out soon.

Israeli Forces Flatten Gaza Border Areas to Create Militarized Zone

 

Israeli forces have already destroyed 1,100 of the 2,800 buildings in Gaza's border areas

 

Israel is destroying buildings and flattening areas of Gaza on the Israeli border to create a so-called “buffer zone” that Israel will militarize, demonstrating its long-term plans to occupy the Strip.

 

According to The Wall Street Journal, Israeli soldiers began working in November in an area in northern Gaza to create a wasteland roughly 1 kilometer in width. “Everything has been flattened,” one soldier said. “It was mostly agriculture. Now it’s a military zone, a complete no man’s land.”

 

Twenty-one Israeli soldiers were recently killed while planting explosives in a central Gaza neighborhood near the border as part of the work to destroy Gaza’s border areas. A Hamas rocket hit a nearby tank, detonating the explosives and collapsing the buildings.

 

According to a recent report from Israel’s N12 news, Israeli forces have already destroyed 1,100 of the 2,800 buildings in the border areas. Israeli officials have not confirmed the figures but have acknowledged they’re creating a “buffer zone” to prevent a future October 7-style attack.

 

Israeli officials claim the work is being done to “dismantle terrorist infrastructure,” but the fact that Israeli soldiers are able to plant explosives in buildings to demolish them makes it clear there’s no threat.

 

Financial Times reported that the US opposes Israel’s plans to take over Gaza’s border territory. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Tuesday that the US does “not want to see the territory of Gaza reduced in any way.” But the US continues to provide Israel with unconditional military support and political cover.

In my quest to experience an original thought, I learned Jesus was all about teaching

"perspective matters" to his disciples and how to ascertain the perspective of your awareness.

 

Imagine you are in a place where the definition of what is good does not exist.

Thus, for that to be a fact, the definition of evil would also not exist.

Your location determines if there is illumination or not but without essence,

you would not exist.

What is the current that propels your direction or are you motionless?

Meditate on that for a moment.

 

In the next second, You, not the environment, will become void of All perception indefinitely.

Your life force will dissipate and ground out. Would you try to avoid that permanent event?

God is a Living Entity that has escaped Death but is not immune.

Does this not define The purpose for existence and the reason it has manifested?

Why can't you see the errors in the cult that has captured and owns your thoughts and actions?

 

Many studies have documented a deficient cognitive ability in a living entity is proven harmful,

a liability to the environment around it. Trust the science! The evidence is everywhere around you!

How do you decrypt and run the code in your DNA to operate without harm? Or is it a simple state

of cognitive ability founded upon a perspective that molds and specifies the terms?

Why were we made this way? Born with an empty memory! Or are you possessed by another??

Now you have tarnished the environment where good nor evil did not exist by causing their meaning

to be known. The evidence of gladness and sadness will exist for an eternity long after God.

 

To experience an original thought and reveal how attenuated your perspective and/or dampened

your cognitive ability is, learn how to unlock and run the code in your DNA that will prompt you

to perform without harm! Have you ascertained the perspective of your awareness and became "reborn"?
