Do you remember PRISM? A government surveillance program, was unveiled by Edward Snowden's leaks in 2013. It entailed the collection of internet data from major companies like Google and Facebook, not only by the NSA but also by the CIA and other intelligence agencies. Macron slams Moscow’s claims of French role in terror attack

Paris had earlier said it had no intelligence linking the Crocus City Hall shooting spree to Kiev

French President Emmanuel Macron has dismissed claims that Paris may have been involved in the Crocus City Hall massacre outside Moscow, speaking to French media on Thursday. In a phone call on Wednesday with his French counterpart, Sebastien Lecornu, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu suggested that Kiev’s Western backers, including Paris, may have been behind the attack.

The terrorist incident in March claimed over 140 lives, after armed gunmen stormed a packed music venue near the capital. The suspected shooters were apprehended by Russian law enforcement on the way to the Ukrainian border.

The French and Russian defense ministers talked by phone on Wednesday. During the conversation, Lecornu repeatedly told his Russian counterpart that Western countries and Ukraine had no involvement in the massacre, the Russian MOD reported.

Shoigu replied that he had intelligence to the contrary, saying, “the Kiev regime does nothing without the approval of its Western backers.”

“We hope that in this case the French intelligence services are not behind this,” he added.

Macron called the statements “ridiculous,” “baroque and threatening.” “It makes no sense,” to say that France “could be behind [the Moscow terror attack] and that the Ukrainians are behind it,” the president told the media on Thursday.

He added that the phone call was prompted by Paris’ willingness to share “useful information” as a part of “joint work” among countries affected by terrorism.

Moscow also maintains that the terrorists had a “window” prepared for them to cross the border into Ukraine. While Islamic State’s Afghanistan-based wing (ISIS-K) has claimed responsibility for the attack, the head of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), Aleksandr Bortnikov, suggested in March that the US, UK, and Ukraine may have been involved.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Thursday that Kiev’s connection to the case is obvious, “especially since Ukraine’s involvement in other terrorist attacks on Russian soil is no longer in doubt.” He referred to the assassinations of journalists Darya Dugina and Vladlen Tatarsky as examples of Kiev’s acts of terrorism.

McDonald's Buys Up All Israeli Franchise Restaurants After Boycott Hits Sales

McDonald's has bought out all the franchise restaurants in Israel after seeing a sales hit due to boycotts. The locations have become a flashpoint in the Israel-Hamas war, receiving global media attention.

Bloomberg reported that McDonald's Corp has decided on the buyout from Alonyal Ltd, taking direct control of the operations several months after its Israel franchise became a focal issue during the early stages of the war on Gaza.

"McDonald's remains committed to the Israeli market and to ensuring a positive employee and customer experience in the market going forward," said Jo Sempels, who leads the McDonald's segment that oversees international markets with licenced restaurants.

According to Calcalist, an Israeli financial news website, the chain intends to search for a new franchise for its Israeli operations a few months after finalizing the acquisition. McDonald's announced that the deal with Alonyal hinges on specific prerequisites, and that the transaction is expected to conclude in the next few months.

Over 30 years ago, Alonyal introduced the McDonald's brand to Israel, expanding the business to include 225 locations and over 5,000 staff members, Bloomberg reported.

Local franchise operators run the majority of McDonald's stores around the world and in many ways act as independent businesses.

McDonald's sparked outrage among pro-Palestine activists last October when its Israel franchise announced it was giving free meals to Israeli soldiers in its branches in the country.

This prompted franchise operators in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Pakistan to publicly criticize the actions.

In a statement a few days later, Chris Kempczinski, the CEO of McDonald's, said that the company "firmly condemns violence and hate speech" and feels "deeply disturbed by the acts of antisemitism and Islamophobia," Bloomberg reported.

The fast food chain has reported decreased sales amid boycotts in Muslim countries over the Gaza conflict

McDonald’s has announced that it will be buying back all of its restaurants in Israel after sales in the region plunged due to a boycott of the franchise over its perceived support for the Jewish State in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

The popular burger chain uses a franchise system under which individual operators are licensed to run outlets and employ staff. For over 30 years, all McDonald’s restaurants in Israel were run by the Alonyal company.

In a statement released on Thursday, McDonald’s said it remains “committed to the Israeli Market and to ensuring a positive employee and customer experience in the market going forward.”

The company said it will be purchasing all 225 outlets from Alonyal and that all 5,000 of its employees, as well as its restaurants and operations in Israel, would be retained on “equivalent terms.” No other terms of the sale have been revealed.

McDonald’s faced widespread criticism after its Israeli restaurants were filmed giving away thousands of free meals to Israeli military personnel. The outcry resulted in spontaneous boycotts from consumers across the Middle East and other Muslim-majority countries such as Pakistan, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia.

As a result, the company’s fourth-quarter revenues came in significantly below market expectations. McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said the company is witnessing a “meaningful business impact.”

Others Western brands, such as KFC, Starbucks, and Unilever, have also faced backlash over their perceived position on the Israel-Palestine conflict and have reported financial losses in the fourth quarter of 2023. In Pakistan, anti-Israel protesters torched a KFC restaurant last week.

The boycotts against major Western brands come after Israel launched a military operation in Gaza following an incursion by Hamas militants into the southern part of the country last October. During the attack, over 1,200 people were killed and scores of hostages were taken. Pricing power in a market long dominated by Western institutional money is moving East and the implications are profound

The gold price has risen to a series of new all-time highs of late, a development that has received only cursory attention in the mainstream financial media. But as is the case with so much else these days, there is much more going on than meets the eye. In fact, the rise in the dollar price of gold is almost the least interesting aspect to this story.

For thousands of years, gold was the ultimate store of value and was synonymous with the concept of ‘money’. Trade was often settled either in gold itself or in bank notes backed by gold and directly exchangeable for it. Currencies backed by nothing but government decree – called 'fiat' currencies – have tended to eventually fail.

However, in 1971, gold found itself cast out of this ancient role when the US unilaterally suspended dollar convertibility into gold as enshrined in the Bretton Woods agreement that established the framework for the post-war economy. Shortly thereafter, in an act that medieval alchemists only dreamed of, gold was created out of thin air in the form of futures contracts, meaning bullion could be bought and sold without any metal changing hands – or even existing.

Besides the obvious ramification of all of this – the removal of gold backing to the dollar and thus implicitly to nearly all currencies – there are two important features of how the gold market has subsequently functioned: first, gold has essentially been reduced to trading like any other cyclical financial asset; second, the price of gold has largely been determined by Western institutional investors.

Both of these longstanding trends are now breaking down. As we will see, the importance of this development is hard to overstate. But let’s begin with a very quick examination of how gold went from being the ultimate source of value to just another ticker moving in predictable patterns in the constellation of financial instruments.

How paper replaced metal

The collapse of Bretton Woods in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s – culminating in the gold window being shut in 1971 – was a messy period of transition, uncertainty, and instability. The dollar devalued and a fixed-rate system was negotiated and soon thereafter abandoned. But what was clear was that the US was steering the world away from gold and toward a dollar standard.

Jelle Zijlstra, president of the Dutch central bank, chairman of the Bank of International Settlements from 1967 until 1981, and a prominent figure at the time, recalled in his memoirs how “gold disappeared as the anchor of monetary stability” and that “the road… through endless vicissitudes to a new dollar hegemony was paved with many conferences, with faithful, shrewd, and sometimes misleading stories, with idealistic visions of the future and impressive professorial speeches.” But, he concluded, the ultimate political reality was that the “Americans supported or fought any change, depending on whether they saw the dollar’s position strengthened or threatened.”

Nevertheless, gold was lurking in the shadows like a deposed but still-living monarch and thus represented an implicit guard against the abuse of what had become fiat currencies. If nothing else, as dollars continued to be printed, the price of gold would surge and signal a debasement of the greenback. And this is more or less what happened in the 1970s after the gold window was shuttered. After breaking the $35 per-ounce peg in 1971, gold rocketed all the way up to $850 by 1980.

So the US government had a strong interest in managing the perception of the dollar through gold. Most importantly, it didn’t want to see gold recreate a pseudo reserve currency by strengthening substantially. Legendary Fed chairman Paul Volcker once said “gold is my enemy.” And indeed it traditionally had been the enemy of central banks: it forced them to tighten rates when they didn’t want to and imposed on them a certain discipline.

This framework helps make sense of the rise of the unallocated – i.e. ‘paper’ – gold market in the 1980s and the countless gold derivatives that emerged. This actually started in 1974 with the launch of gold futures trading but exploded in the next decade. What happened is that bullion banks began selling paper claims on gold for which there was no actual gold attached. And buyers were not actually required to pay upfront but could simply leave a cash margin.

Thousands in danger after Russian levee break

Some residents in the city of Orsk in Orenburg Region are being evacuated

Around 4,000 households are at risk of flooding after a dike holding back the Ural River suffered a breach in the Russian city of Orsk in Orenburg Region on Friday.

The breach that forced the evacuations happened near the old town section of the city south of the river.

Earlier in the day, two leaks were discovered in the levee in the eastern part of the city. Maintenance crews were dispatched to repair the damage. Local authorities also warned residents to collect documents and essential belongings and proceed to temporary accommodation centers.

The region has been experiencing heavy rains and flooding in recent days due to which the water level of the Ural River near Orsk has been almost a meter higher than normal. Over 100 roads and 47 bridges have been closed due to the rising waters.

Local authorities have blamed the flooding on a combination of factors, including a sharp rise in temperatures melting the snow from the Urals mountains. The outflow from the Iriklinsky reservoir, which has served to control the river, has reportedly broken all records at 2,150 cubic meters per second – although this is still not enough to cope with the inflow of 2,533 cubic meters per second.

On Thursday President Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the Israeli military's killing of seven aid workers with the World Central Kitchen which happened Monday, and has since resulted in rare expression of US mainstream media outrage.

The White House readout suggested a tense exchange, with Biden conveying tough words to the prime minister. "President Biden emphasized that the strikes on humanitarian workers and the overall humanitarian situation are unacceptable. He made clear the need for Israel to announce and implement a series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers," the readout said.

"He made clear that US policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on these steps," the statement added. Widespread media reports interpreted this as an unprecedented "ultimatum" given to the close US ally.

For example Reuters wrote that Biden "threatened to condition support for Israel's offensive in Gaza on it taking concrete steps to protect aid workers and civilians, seeking for the first time to leverage US aid to influence Israeli military behavior."

But as the reported Palestinian death toll in Gaza reaches and surpasses 33,000 - according to local health ministry figures - the administration in reality appears no closer to taking any action on placing conditions on use of US weaponry. Going back to Oct.7, Biden has only consistently vowed the opposite - that the defense aid would flow to Tel Aviv uninterrupted. This despite that one of the aid workers was American.

But the Israelis, seeking to tap down international and US anger, have said an internal investigation has concluded that the IDF drone team behind the attack was in "serious violation" of the military's rules. Writes The Wall Street Journal, "The Israeli drone team that killed seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen after mistaking them for Hamas militants lacked the evidence to order the strikes and twice violated the military’s operating rules, an Israeli military investigation found."

"The investigation's findings indicate that the incident should not have occurred," the IDF said. "Those who approved the strike were convinced that they were targeting armed Hamas operatives and not WCK employees." The IDF still says it was a Hamas terrorists initially being targeted. "The investigation found that the forces identified a gunman on one of the aid trucks, following which they identified an additional gunman," the statement said.

“With effect from today, banks shall convert the current Zimbabwe dollar balances to ZiG,” Mushayavanhu said, adding that it “will circulate with other currencies in the basket.”

He stated that the central bank would also implement a market-determined exchange rate.

“If we implement these measures, we expect them to have an impact on inflation,” the governor said.

The Zimbabwean dollar has depreciated against the US dollar every trading day this year and has weakened 72%, making it the world’s second-worst-performing currency, Bloomberg reported late last month. According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency, the country’s annual inflation rate increased to a seven-month high of 55.3% in March, up from 47.6% in February. Take a good, hard look at the many ways in which Americans are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

American families who have their dogs shot, their homes trashed and their children terrorized or, worse, killed by errant SWAT team raids in the middle of the night are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

Disabled individuals who are being strip searched, handcuffed, arrested and “diagnosed” by police as dangerous or mentally unstable merely because they stutter and walk unevenly are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

School-aged children as young as 4-years-old who are leg shackled, handcuffed and strip searched for violating school zero tolerance policies by chewing a Pop Tart into the shape of a gun and playing an imaginary game of cops and robbers, or engaging in childish behavior such as crying or jumping are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

Unarmed citizens who are tasered or shot by police for daring to hesitate, stutter, move a muscle, flee or disagree in any way with a police order are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

Likewise, Americans—young and old alike—who are shot by police because they pointed a garden hose at a police officer, reached for their registration in their glove box, relied upon a cane to steady themselves, or were seen playing with air rifles or BB guns are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

Female motorists who are unlucky enough to be pulled over for a questionable traffic infraction only to be subjected by police to cavity searches by the side of the road are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

Male pedestrians and motorists alike who are being subjected to roadside strip searches and rectal probes by police based largely on the color of their skin are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

American citizens subjected to government surveillance whereby their phone calls are being listened in on, their mail and text messages read, their movements tracked and their transactions monitored are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

Homeowners who are being fined and arrested for raising chickens in their backyard, allowing the grass in their front yards to grow too long, and holding Bible studies in their homes are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

Decorated military veterans who are being arrested for criticizing the government on social media such as Facebook are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

Homeless individuals who are being harassed, arrested and run out of towns by laws that criminalize homelessness are being denied their rights under the Constitution.

A Boston, Massachusetts, hospital announced Tuesday that after finding Black mothers were more likely to be reported for child abuse and neglect if a toxicology report came back positive, it would be taking steps to reevaluate the process in order to avoid perpetuating "structural racism."

"Black pregnant people are more likely to be drug tested and to be reported to child welfare systems than white pregnant people," said Mass General Brigham, a nonprofit health care system.

"As a part of our United Against Racism effort to achieve health equity for patients and communities across our system, we… are addressing policies that may unwittingly perpetuate structural racism," Mass General stated.

The announcement pertained to pregnant women who are using drugs, which may show up in fetal testing.

"Substance use disorder (SUD) is a condition with significant racial and ethnic inequities, especially in the context of pregnancy, when more punitive approaches to substance use disproportionately affect Black individuals," the announcement said.

In order to alleviate the inequity, as the hospital sees it, Mass General will "update policies that automatically trigger mandatory filings with child welfare agencies when a pregnant individual is engaged in treatment for substance use disorder, absent any other concerns for potential abuse or neglect."

The automatic trigger policy for drug-using mothers "disproportionately impact patients from historically marginalized populations," the hospital stated.

The new policy says reports "after delivery should be filed only if there is reasonable cause to believe that the infant is suffering or at imminent risk of suffering physical or emotional injury and that ‘substance exposure’ alone, including treatment with methadone or buprenorphine for opioid use disorder, does not require a report of abuse or neglect in the absence of protective concerns for the infant."

"The updated policy reflects our focus on providing safe and equitable care for all patients. The process allowed us to turn our lens inward to understand our own contributions to stigma and inequity and strive to fix them," said Allison Bryant, MD, MPH, the associate chief health equity officer at Mass General Brigham.

Letitia James issues 10-day ultimatum to company that guaranteed Trump’s $175M bond

Former President Donald Trump narrowly avoided having his assets seized by New York Attorney General Letitia James last month after posting a $175 million bond at the last minute. But now, James is demanding clarity from the company that guaranteed it.

Axios reported Thursday that James' office recently filed a motion to compel either Trump's lawyers or the Knight Specialty Insurance Company (KSIC) to prove that it is financially able to comply with the conditions of the bond. Her motion gives both entities a 10-day deadline to "justify the surety" of the bond, or prove it can actually pay the bond amount. It remains unclear what actions James would take after the 10-day deadline. Presumably she could demand the court revoke the previous agreement and demand the full $464 million bond.

According to CBS News, KSIC is not registered with the state's Department of Financial Services, and the bond paperwork notably did not include a power of attorney authorization for the bond provider, nor did it include a financial statement from KSIC showing it was capable of shouldering the $175 million burden.

"In all the years I've been doing this, you always have to have a certificate from the Department of Financial Services saying that you're licensed to issue a surety bond," attorney Bruce Lederman, who has experience filing bonds in the Empire State, told CBS.

The chairman of KSIC is Don Hankey, who is a billionaire Trump supporter involved in the subprime auto loan industry. the New Republic reported this week that Hankey "carved out his $7.4 billion fortune" through "predatory practices, targeting low-income customers with high-interest auto loans." And the New York bond is not the first time Hankey has used his wealth on the former president's behalf.

"Hankey is also believed to be the largest shareholder in Axos Financial, according to MSNBC’s Lisa Rubin — a financial institution that, in 2022, refinanced more than $50 million of Trump's loans on Trump Tower and Trump National Doral Miami, according to documents filed with the Office of Government Ethics," the New Republic's Ellie Quinlan Houghtaling wrote.

A New York appeals court reduced the bond Trump had to pay to appeal his civil fraud judgment from $464 million to $175 million in late March. by paying the bond, the former president was able to avoid James seizing his bank accounts and real estate assets to satisfy the judgment. Even though the bond amount itself was lowered, Trump will still have to pay the full judgment amount of more than $450 million should he lose his appeal.

It was the deadliest attack on Jews since World War II.

Joe Biden ignored the massacre in order to open the door and help Iran bring in another $10 billion in the next few months.

The Biden administration has extended by four months a sanctions waiver that will allow Iraq to continue to purchase electricity from Iran and gives Iran limited access to the proceeds to buy humanitarian goods.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed the 120-day waiver extension and it was transmitted to Congress on Tuesday, U.S. officials said. The move is likely to draw criticism from Iran hawks on Capitol Hill and elsewhere who believe the extension will reward Iran at a time when it is coming under increasing pressure to end its support for proxy groups, including Hamas, that are destabilizing the Middle East.

There is roughly $10 billion in Iraqi payments for Iranian electricity currently being held in escrow accounts in Iraq, and the waiver will allow Baghdad to maintain its energy imports without fear of U.S. penalties for violating sanctions on Iran.

Joe Biden has now gifted the Iranian regime with $80 billion since entering the White House.

Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) told FOX News a month ago in October that Joe Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen gave $3.5 billion to Iran through the International Monetary Fund several months ago.

This was not part of the $6 billion that Biden recently gifted the Iranian mullahs.

But the $3.5 billion and $6 billion may be only a part of Joe Biden’s cash for Iran.

Senator Kennedy spoke out about another transfer of money to the Iranian regime back in 2021. Kennedy argued in a letter to Janet Yellen that the Biden administration’s plan would ultimately result in China receiving $22 billion, Russia receiving $18 billion and Iran receiving $3.5 billion.

But that’s not all; according to The Daily Signal’s calculations, Iran has received approximately $70 billion more under Biden than it would have under Trump.

Kacsmaryk scolded the agency for drastically overstating how difficult it would be to redact free-text entries — 93% of which the CDC admitted had no personally identifying information — that were limited to 250 characters, which the judge compared to tweets.

ICAN, which shares lawyer Aaron Siri with FCDC, made the first two productions of free-text entries available over the past month. The group said they show "remarkable consistency" between each other in adverse events reported, specifically highlighting the frequency of symptoms associated with myocarditis – inflammation of the the heart muscle myocardium.

The CDC has until mid-January 2025 to turn over all 7.8 million free-text entries from V-safe, which registered 8.5 million users from December 2020 to April 2021, when the vaccines became generally available to adults.

More than 10 million participants have submitted 151 million health surveys through the app as of January, according to the agency. They answer questions at daily, then weekly and finally quarterly intervals, making it a more reliable gauge of vaccine injury than the passively monitored Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System.

Even COVID vaccine recipients who escape injury may not be getting much protection from the latest formulations of the jabs, ongoing research suggests.

University of Washington researchers found "persistent immune imprinting" following Omicron XBB.1.5 mRNA boosters in a study published in the Cell journal Immunity last month, meaning the body mounts an immune response as if it were exposed to the original vaccine formulation.

The Department of Justice has filed to change the venue of Ashley Babbitt's wrongful death lawsuit from California to Washington D.C. A hearing on the request is scheduled for April 8 in San Diego. US District Judge Cynthia Bashant, an Obama-appointing, is overseeing the case. Babbitt was shot to death by Capitol Police on January 6, 2021 as she was attempting to enter the Capitol Building. She was unarmed.

Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California on behalf of Babbitt's family, seeking justice for the tragic death of the veteran, who was shot and killed by Capitol Police Leiuetentat Michael Byrd on January 6 in the U.S. Capitol.

Outlined in Judicial Watch's complaint, the shooting took place at the east entrance to the Speaker's Lobby, where Babbitt was unarmed and had her hands raised when she was fatally shot by Lt. Byrd. The complaint highlights Byrd's admission that he shot Babbitt without assessing her intentions or identifying her as female.

In March, Judicial Watch filed an opposition to the Justice Department's request to transfer the venue of the case to the District of Columbia. Russia declares 'state of emergency' after mystery radiation leak in Khabarovsk

High radiation levels were found near a pylon in Khabarovsk - around 1.5 miles away from residential buildings.

The area has been cordoned off but the source of the radiation leak has not been made public.

Khabarovsk head of civil defence Andrey Kolchin said: "A source of increased radiation levels was discovered… the area was cordoned.

"It was decided to introduce a state of emergency in Khabarovsk to carry out work faster."
