people have cognitive dissonance if it is their side. Many people are still trapped on the idea of sides. It is not as black and white as people make it out to be and as a result they feel often some sort of brand loyalty, like people who prefer coke over pepsi, even though they are both cancer causing sweetened water with similar flavors. But it is essentially the same. Its a psychological trick of providing choice. How many times has the Hegelian dialect concept been talked about here. Plaintiff Russell-Jay: Gould has paid a $150 filing fee and filed a number of documents apparently intended to constitute a proposed civil complaint. Upon review of plaintiff's complaint, I conclude that it should be dismissed forthwith on the court's own motion for lack of subject matter jurisdiction.

 

A district court may dismiss a complaint for lack of subject matter jurisdiction on its own motion where the claims are "so insubstantial, implausible, foreclosed by prior decisions of [the United States Supreme Court], or otherwise completely devoid of merit as not to involve a federal controversy." Steel Company v. Citizens for a Better Environment, 118 S.Ct. 1003, 1010 (1998) (citing Oneida Indian Nation of N.Y. v. County of Oneida, 414 U.S. 661, 666 (1974)).

 

In what appears to be the primary pleading captioned "GLOBAL-POSTAL-UNION-TREATY. FOR THIS CLAIM OF THIS MARRIAGE-UNION IS WITH THIS TREATY OF THIS FEE WITH THIS TERRITORY OF THIS NORTH-CAROLINA, DI-STRICT OF THE COLUMBIA AND DI-STRICT-COURT/PORT WITH THESE UNITY-STATES OF OUR WORLD,plaintiff makes nonsensical conclusory statements.There are no factual allegations from which an inference might be drawn that plaintiff's rights have been violated under federal law or the United States Constitution, or that plaintiffs' rights under state law have been violated by defendants who reside in a state other than the same state in which the plaintiff resides. Indeed, there are no factual allegations at all.

 

Because nothing in plaintiffs' pleading permits an inference to be drawn that there exists a case or controversy over which this court might have jurisdiction, the complaint will be dismissed on the court's own motion for lack of jurisdiction.

OTTAWA, April 8 (Reuters) - Canada's domestic spy agency concluded that China interfered in the last two elections, an official probe heard on Monday, the firmest evidence so far of suspected Chinese meddling in Canadian politics.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party won both the elections, held in 2019 and 2021. Under pressure from opposition legislators unhappy about media reports on China's possible role, Trudeau set up a commission into foreign interference.

The commission was shown a slide on Monday containing an extract of a February 2023 briefing from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).

"We know that the PRC (Peoples' Republic of China) clandestinely and deceptively interfered in both the 2019 and 2021 elections," it said.

"In both cases, these FI (foreign interference) activities were pragmatic in nature and focused primarily on supporting those viewed to be either 'pro-PRC' or 'neutral' on issues of interest to the PRC government."

The existence of the assessment had previously been reported by Global News. China denies it interferes in Canadian politics.

Erin O'Toole, who led the Conservatives during the 2021 campaign, estimated Chinese interference cost his party up to nine seats but added it had not changed the course of the election.

"State actors are able to conduct foreign interference successfully in Canada because there are few legal or political consequences. FI is therefore low-risk and high-reward," said the CSIS assessment.

Intelligence analysts and the Conservatives say Trudeau's government has not done enough to combat Chinese interference. Trudeau is due to testify to the commission on Wednesday.

The Conservatives, who generally take a harder line on China than the Liberals, campaigned in 2021 on a platform that condemned Beijing's treatment of its Uyghur minority and vowed to ban Chinese mobile giant Huawei from the 5G network.

A legislator for the left-leaning minority New Democrats told the inquiry that once she started criticizing Beijing's Hong Kong policy, invitations to events held by the politically influential ethnic Chinese community started to dry up.

According to the official 2021 census, Canada is home to around 1.7 million people of Chinese descent, just under 5% of the total population.

The Chinese embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the CSIS statement.

Last year, Canada said a Conservative legislator with family in Hong Kong had been targeted in an online disinformation operation, and kicked out a senior Chinese diplomat.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican on Monday declared gender-affirming surgery and surrogacy as grave violations of human dignity, putting them on par with abortion and euthanasia as practices that it said reject God’s plan for human life.

 

The Vatican’s doctrine office issued “Infinite Dignity,” a 20-page declaration that has been in the works for five years. After substantial revision in recent months, it was approved March 25 by Pope Francis, who ordered its publication.

 

From a pope who has made outreach to the LGBTQ+ community a hallmark of his papacy, the document was received as a setback, albeit predictable, by trans Catholics. But its message was also consistent with the Argentine Jesuit’s long-standing belief that while trans people should be welcomed in the church, so-called “gender ideologies” should not.

 

In its most eagerly anticipated section, the Vatican repeated its rejection of “gender theory,” or the idea that one’s biological sex can change. It said God created man and woman as biologically different, separate beings, and said people must not tinker with that or try to “make oneself God.”

 

“It follows that any sex-change intervention, as a rule, risks threatening the unique dignity the person has received from the moment of conception,” the document said.

 

It distinguished between gender-affirming surgeries, which it rejected, and “genital abnormalities” that are present at birth or that develop later. Those abnormalities can be “resolved” with the help of health care professionals, it said.

 

Advocates for LGBTQ+ Catholics immediately criticized the document as outdated, harmful and contrary to the stated goal of recognizing the “infinite dignity” of all of God’s children. They warned it could have real-world effects on trans people, fueling anti-trans violence and discrimination.

 

“While it lays out a wonderful rationale for why each human being, regardless of condition in life, must be respected, honored, and loved, it does not apply this principle to gender-diverse people,” said Francis DeBernardo of New Ways Ministry, which advocates for LGBTQ+ Catholics.

 

“It needs to be emphasized that biological sex and the sociocultural role of sex (gender) can be distinguished but not separated”

Nicolete Burbach, lead expert in social and environmental justice at the London Jesuit Centre, said the document showed the Vatican continues to fail to engage with queer and feminist approaches to the body “which it simply dismisses as supposedly subjecting both the body and human dignity itself to human whims.”

 

“I think the main difficulty faced by the document is that it attempts to affirm the church’s authentic commitment to human dignity in the face of a troubling history on the part of the church itself around attacks on that dignity,” said Burbach, a trans Catholic theologian who researches transness and the Catholic Church.

 

The document’s existence, rumored since 2019, was confirmed in recent weeks by the new prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Argentine Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, a close Francis confidant.

And yet, in an apparent attempt at balance, the document takes pointed aim at countries — including many in Africa — that criminalize homosexuality. It echoed Francis’ assertion in a 2023 interview with The Associated Press that “being homosexual is not a crime.”

 

The new document denounces “as contrary to human dignity the fact that, in some places, not a few people are imprisoned, tortured, and even deprived of the good of life solely because of their sexual orientation.”

 

The White House said President Joe Biden, a devout Catholic, was “pleased” to see that the declaration “furthers the Vatican’s call to ensure that LGBTQ+ (individuals) are protected from violence and imprisonment around the world,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

 

On the specifics involving gender theory, Jean-Pierre stressed that it was not Biden’s role to “litigate internal church policy.”

 

Asked how its negative take on trans people squared with Francis’ message of welcome, Fernández said the welcome remained but that the pope fervently believed that the idea that gender was fluid “rather than helping to recognize dignity, impoverishes the vision” of a man and woman coming together to create new life.

 

The document is something of a repackaging of previously articulated Vatican positions, read now through the prism of human dignity. It restates well-known Catholic doctrine opposing abortion and euthanasia, and adds to the list some of Francis’ main concerns as pope: the threats to human dignity posed by poverty, war, human trafficking, the death penalty and forced migration.

 

In a newly articulated position, it says surrogacy violates both the dignity of the surrogate mother and the child.

 

While much attention about surrogacy has focused on possible exploitation of poor women as surrogates, the Vatican asserts that the child “has the right to have a fully human (and not artificially induced) origin and to receive the gift of a life that manifests both the dignity of the giver and that of the receiver.”

 

“Considering this, the legitimate desire to have a child cannot be transformed into a ‘right to a child’ that fails to respect the dignity of that child as the recipient of the gift of life,” it said.

The Vatican had previously published its most articulated position on gender in 2019, when the Congregation for Catholic Education rejected the idea that people can choose or change their genders and insisted on the complementarity of biologically male and female sex organs to create new life.

 

The new document from the more authoritative Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith quotes from that 2019 education document, but tempers the tone. Significantly, it doesn’t repeat Vatican doctrine that homosexual people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect but that homosexual actions are “intrinsically disordered.”

 

In a news conference to introduce the document, Fernández acknowledged that the “intrinsically disordered” language was very strong. He suggested there might be a better way, “with other words,” to express the church’s vision of sex between husband and wife to create new life.

 

Francis has ministered to trans Catholics, including trans sex workers, and insisted that the Catholic Church must welcome all children of God.

 

But he has also denounced “gender theory” as the “worst danger” facing humanity today, an “ugly ideology” that threatens to cancel out God-given differences between man and woman. He has blasted in particular what he calls the “ideological colonization” of the West in the developing world, where development aid is sometimes conditioned on adopting Western ideas about gender.

 

Transgender activists immediately called the document “hurtful” and devoid of the voices and experiences of real trans people, especially in the distinction it makes between gender-affirming surgeries and surgeries on intersex people.

 

“The suggestion that gender-affirming health care — which has saved the lives of so many wonderful trans people and enabled them to live in harmony with their bodies, their communities and (God) — might risk or diminish trans people’s dignity is not only hurtful but dangerously ignorant,” said Mara Klein, a nonbinary, transgender activist who has participated in Germany’s church reform project.

 

Klein said the Vatican “hypocrisy” was furthered by the document’s approval of surgery on intersex people, “which if performed without consent especially on minors often cause immense physical and psychological harm.”

 

The document comes at a time of some backlash against transgender people, including in the United States where Republican-led state legislatures are considering a new round of bills restricting medical care for transgender youths — and in some cases, adults.

 

“On top of the rising hostility towards our communities, we are faced with a church that does not listen and refuses to see the beauty of creation that can be found in our biographies,” Klein said in an email.

“Since the war began, I understood that I have an obligation to make my voice heard, and to call for an end to the cycle of violence.” These were the words of Ben Arad, an 18-year-old Israeli conscientious objector, shortly before he reported to the Israeli army’s recruitment center near Tel Aviv on April 1 and declared his refusal to enlist in mandatory military service, in protest of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza and the long-standing occupation.

 

Arad is the third Israeli teenager to publicly refuse the draft for political reasons since October 7, and was tried and sentenced to an initial 20 days in military prison. He follows Tal Mitnick, who has served 105 days in prison across three sentences, and Sofia Orr, who has served 40 days in prison across two sentences — neither of whom have yet been exempted from military service, meaning they may still be sentenced to further stints in prison.

 

Born in Ramat Hasharon not far from Tel Aviv, Arad has spent the past few months volunteering at Kibbutz Mashabei Sadeh in the Negev/Naqab desert, where he worked with youth from the kibbutz and in schools in the nearby Bedouin village of Bir Hadaj. Like many other Israeli teens completing what is known as a “year of service” before the army this year, Arad was informed that the program had been cut short due to the war, and that he would therefore have to enlist in the army in April rather than December.

In an interview with +972 Magazine and Local Call prior to his sentencing, Arad explained that he never defined himself as an “activist” until now, and that watching Israel’s destruction of the Gaza Strip — which he described as “an unprecedented murder campaign not only against Hamas but against the entire Palestinian people” — convinced him of the need to refuse.

 

“The killing of civilians in Gaza, the hunger, the disease, the destruction of property, [in addition to] settlers’ crimes in the occupied territories — they all add fuel to the flame of hatred and terror,” he said. “Fighting will not bring back the hostages. It will not resurrect the dead. It will not liberate the Gazans from Hamas’ control, and it will not bring peace.”

How did you arrive at the decision to refuse?

 

I didn’t grow up in an environment that talks about these things, but I was raised to think critically and question everything. I took a rather different path from the average Israeli leftist, who starts with the occupation and only then thinks about global issues such as capitalism and colonialism. I was concerned from an early age about global warming and the environment. This line of thinking led me to an anti-capitalist ideology, which brought me to anti-colonialism, and from there to the struggle against occupation.

 

Before the war, I already felt less suitable for military service, but I never went to many demonstrations and was not an activist. Since the beginning of the war, I have felt obligated to act. I felt that I owed it to myself and to the world.

 

How did your friends and family react to your decision?

 

I come from a family where everyone enlisted. My brother, who is two years older than me, is a military officer right now. A lot of my friends are soldiers. Those around me disagree [with refusing], but sometimes agree on certain points. Most of the people around me respect the decision, and appreciate that I’m fighting for something that I think is right and that I’m willing to pay a price for my principles.

 

After October 7, many on the left went through a process they describe as “sobering up,” or shifting further to the right. With you, the opposite happened.

The barbarism of Hamas’s brutal attack sought to eradicate any hope for peace and a common future, and the impact of that attack on the Israeli people is still pervasive. Many people saw the shocking things that happened on October 7 and their immediate reaction was that there was no other choice but to destroy Hamas by force. I believe that’s a kind of oxymoron: I don’t believe violence can be destroyed by force. Attacks and ground incursions only create a harsh reality for people in Gaza, spread hunger and disease, and this reality only contributes to support for Hamas and produces the next generation of people who have nothing to lose. Hence the resistance to the occupation, which only strengthens the cycle of violence. The fight against terrorism must be a political struggle.

 

Do you think that in the current climate it is possible to convince other teenagers to refusal?

 

I’m not really calling on anyone to refuse. The only thing I can emphasize is for people to examine their perceptions, to question, and to think as critically as possible. That’s all you could ask for. Those who enlist should try to think deeply about the implications and significance of military service. In my opinion, serving in the army is a political act, but people don’t perceive it as such. They enlist because it’s the law, because there’s mandatory conscription. I want them to examine their actions and perceptions under a microscope.

She told me she responds that we are teenagers not world leaders who know everything, and that we can only speak from our knowledge: in order to think of possible solutions, we must first stop the war and clear the smoke, which makes it difficult to see beyond the present.

Federal authorities have raided the office of Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's longtime personal lawyer who paid hush money to adult actress Stormy Daniels.

 

The raid took place in Manhattan on Monday, The New York Times first reported. Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is overseeing the FBI investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, made a referral for the search warrant, according to the report.

 

"Today the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York executed a series of search warrants and seized the privileged communications between my client, Michael Cohen and his clients," Stephen Ryan, Cohen's lawyer, said in a statement. "I have been advised by federal prosecutors that the New York action is, in part, a referral by the Office of Special Counsel, Robert Mueller."

 

In the statement, Ryan called the search "completely inappropriate and unnecessary" and said authorities had seized "protected attorney client communications between a lawyer and his clients." He added that Cohen had previously cooperated with government investigations, including in Congress.

 

Besides raiding Cohen's office, the FBI also went to a hotel room at the Regency in New York City where Cohen had been staying, according to Vanity Fair.

 

McClatchy reported last week that Mueller was looking into Cohen and the Trump Organization. Cohen was involved in overseas business deals, the report said.

 

Cohen has also been of interest to congressional committees investigating Russian meddling. He appeared last year before the House and Senate intelligence committees, and the Senate Judiciary Committee has requested communications related to him. Senator Dianne Feinstein, the Democratic ranking member on the latter committee, requested he appear before the panel.

 

But in recent weeks, Cohen has also been involved in allegations around Trump and Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford. The lawyer admitted to paying $130,000 to the adult actress, who has claimed she had an affair with Trump. On Sunday, a lawyer for the actress filed a motion in federal court in California seeking depositions of Trump and Cohen. On April 5, Trump told reporters that he did not know about Cohen's $130,000 payment.

 

The FBI is interested in Cohen's payments to Stormy Daniels, among other topics, and Monday's raid resulted in seizures of emails, tax documents, business records and communications with Trump, according to the Times.

 

The U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York is Geoffrey Berman, a Trump appointee. Prior to his entering the role, legal analysts had speculated about whether the top prosecutor there would end up having to investigate Trump, given that the Trump Organization has its headquarters in Manhattan.

Under the new legislation, anyone deemed to have been verbally ‘abusive’, in person or online, to a transgender person, including “insulting” them could be hit with a prison sentence of up to seven years.

 

That instantly led to a flood of bad faith reports, including from conservatives making a mockery of the system and from deranged left-wing activists trying to punish their ideological adversaries.

 

David Threadgold, Chairman of the Scottish Police Federation, said that the new legislation was being exploited to pursue personal and political vendettas.

 

“Police Scotland have gone public and said that on every occasion, reports of hate crime will be investigated,” Mr. Threadgold told the BBC. “That creates a situation where we simply cannot cope at the moment.”

 

 

“When you have vexatious complaints, people who look to weaponise this legislation or who make these complaints for personal gain or political point scoring, then that creates a problem for the police which can affect public satisfaction in my organisation,” he added.

 

As we previously highlighted, Police Scotland admitted that the new law could create “additional demand” and create a “resource implication” for police.

 

This followed a trial of a separate program set to be implemented across the country to stop investigating crimes like theft and criminal damage, which authorities acknowledge will help criminals.

 

As we reported yesterday, out of the more than 8000 reports police have received under the new ‘hate crime’ law, less than one per cent are leading to investigations.

 

Police Scotland are having to pay officers in their control room “hundreds of thousands” in overtime to deal with the onslaught of frivolous reports.

 

However, that’s still nearly 800 new investigations in a single week for a police force that already has stretched resources.

 

It’s been a complete disaster, but they can’t say nobody warned them.

The FBI raided the office and hotel room of President Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, on Monday and took records and payments relating to Stormy Daniels' case as well as communications between Trump and Cohen, per the New York Times.

 

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan reportedly received the search warrant after obtaining a referral from Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The search appears to not be directly linked to Mueller, but it's likely he shared relevant information he had uncovered in his own probe with prosecutors, according to the Times.

The backdrop: Cohen was drawn into Mueller's Russia investigation last year for his contacts with Russians during Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.He's also been at the center of the Stormy Daniels scandal, and admitted to paying the porn actress $130,000 during the campaign.

 

Trump's take: The president blasted the raid at a meeting with senior military leadership Monday night, calling it a "disgraceful situation" and an "attack on our country in a true sense … an attack on what we all stand for."

 

Update: The Washington Post reports that Cohen "is under federal federal investigation for possible bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations," citing three people with knowledge of the case.

Fire at Trump Tower leaves man dead and 6 firefighters injured

A fire broke out at Trump Tower on Saturday, leaving one man dead and six firefighters injured, the New York City Fire Department said.

 

Police identified the man killed as Todd Brassner,67, a resident of the building’s 50th floor. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later died, said spokeswoman Angelica Conroy of the Fire Department.

 

Brassner was unconscious and unresponsive when firefighters pulled him out, the New York Police Department said. The medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death.

 

The fire was contained to the 50th floor of the tower, located on Fifth Avenue in New York. It was ruled under control around 9 p.m., two hours after it was originally reported, the FDNY tweeted.

 

Six firefighters suffered injuries that are not life threatening, Conroy said.

 

No members of the Trump family were at the tower during the fire, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.

 

Before news of the death, President Donald Trump congratulated firefighters and tweeted that the fire was out and “very confined” in the “well built building.”

 

The upper-level residential floors are not equipped with fire sprinklers, according to Nigro. When asked to comment on the President’s tweet, Nigro said the building “sure stood up quite well.”

 

His son, Eric Trump, also congratulated the firefighters before news of the death, saying “the @FDNY and @NYPD are truly some of the most incredible people anywhere!”

 

Brassner’s apartment was valued at $2.5 million, according to bankruptcy documents from 2015. Brassner had an extensive collection of prized works of art, including a portrait of himself by Andy Warhol, as well as hundreds of guitars and ukeleles, according to the bankruptcy documents.

 

The fire at Trump Tower comes three months after a minor fire broke out in a cooling tower on the roof of the building, according to CNN affiliate WCBS-TV. Two people were injured in the fire, which officials said may have been caused by electrical heaters inside the cooling tower.

The four-alarm fire that broke out on April 7 on the 50th floor of Midtown’s Trump Tower, killing one resident and injuring six firefighters, was caused by overloaded power strips, reports the New York Daily News.

 

The city’s Fire Department confirmed on Twitter that the cause of the fire was an accident, citing “electrical- sequenced power strips powering multiple components” as the cause. It was also noted that a smoke alarm was not present in the apartment where the fire broke out.

 

Todd Brassner, a 67-year-old art collector and dealer, lived on the 50th floor of Trump Tower and was killed in the Saturday evening blaze.

 

In the wake of the fire, President Donald Trump sent out a tweet acknowledging the accident and its containment, which he chalked up to Trump Tower being a “well built building”; he also thanked the “firemen (and women)” that worked to put out the blaze.

 

Trump’s reaction drew criticism from those who recalled a time when Trump lobbied against a law in the 1990s that would have required older residential buildings in New York City to be retrofitted with sprinkler systems.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

Diplomatic relations existed with the Pope, in his capacity as head of state of the Papal States, from 1848 under President James K. Polk to 1867 under President Andrew Johnson, though not at the ambassadorial level. These relations lapsed when on February 28, 1867, Congress passed legislation that prohibited any future funding of United States diplomatic missions to the Holy See. This decision was based on mounting anti-Catholic sentiment in the United States,[1] fueled by the conviction and hanging of Mary Surratt, and three other Catholics, for taking part in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. Her son, John Surratt, also Catholic, was accused of plotting with John Wilkes Booth in the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He served briefly as a Pontifical Zouave but was recognized and arrested. He escaped to Egypt but was eventually arrested and extradited. There was also an allegation that the Pope had forbidden the celebration of Protestant religious services, which had been held weekly in the home of the American Minister in Rome, within the walls of the city.[2]

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

What is a COURT JEW/COURT FACTOR?PART I

In the early modern period, a court Jew, or court factor (German: Hofjude, Hoffaktor; Yiddish: היף איד, romanized: Hoyf Id, קאַורט פאַקטאַר, Kourt Faktor), was a Jewish banker who handled the finances of, or lent money to, European,

mainly German, royalty and nobility. In return for their services, court Jews gained social privileges, including, in some cases, being granted noble status.

 

Examples of what would be later called court Jews emerged in the High Middle Ages[a] when the royalty, the nobility, and the church borrowed money from money changers or employed them as financiers.

Among the most notable of these were Aaron of Lincoln and Vivelin of Strasbourg.

Jewish financiers could use their family connections to provide their sponsors with finance, food, arms, ammunition, gold, and precious metals.[citation needed]

 

The rise of the absolute monarchies in Central Europe brought many Jews, mostly of Ashkenazi origin, into the position of negotiating loans for the various courts.

They could amass personal fortunes and gain political and social influence. However, the court Jew had social connections and influence in the Christian world mainly through the Christian nobility and church.

Due to the precarious position of Jews, some nobles could ignore their debts. If the sponsoring noble died, his Jewish financier could face exile or execution.

The most famous example of this occurred in Württemberg when, after the death of his sponsor Charles Alexander in 1737, Joseph Süß Oppenheimer was put on trial and finally executed.[1]

In an effort to avoid such fate, some court bankers in the late 18th century—such as Samuel Bleichröder, Mayer Amschel Rothschild, or Aron Elias Seligmann—successfully detached their businesses from these courts

and established what eventually developed into full-fledged banks.[2]

 

Prohibited from nearly every other trade, some Jews began to occupy an economic niche as moneylenders in the Middle Ages. Only they were allowed to take interest on loans,

since—while the Church condemned usury universally—canon law was only applied to Christians and not to Jews. Eventually, a sizable sector of the Jewish community were engaged in financial occupations,

and the community was a financially highly successful part of the medieval economy.[3][4] The religious restrictions on moneylending had inadvertently created a source of monopoly rents,

causing profits associated with moneylending to be higher than they otherwise would have been.[5]

By most parameters, the standard of living of the Jewish community in Early Medieval period was at least equal to that of the lower nobility.[6]

However, despite this economic prosperity, the community was not safe: religious hostility increased to the extent that it manifested itself in the form of massacres and expulsions,

Culminating in the repetitive expulsion of all Jews from various parts of Western Europe in the late medieval period.

Although the phenomenon of "Court Jewry" did not occur until the early 17th century, examples of what would be later called court Jews can be found earlier in Jewish moneylenders

who accumulated enough capital to finance the royalty and the nobility.

Among them was Josce of Gloucester, the Jewish financier who funded Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke's conquest of Ireland in 1170,[7] and Aaron of Lincoln, presumably the wealthiest individual in 12th-century Britain,

who left an estate of about £100,000.[5][8]

Also notable was Vivelin of Strasbourg, one of the wealthiest persons in Europe in the early 14th century, who lent 340,000 florins to Edward III of England on the eve of the Hundred Years' War, in 1339.[9]

By the 16th century, Jewish financiers became increasingly connected to rulers and courts.

Josef Goldschmidt (d. 1572) of Frankfurt, also known as "Jud Joseph zum Goldenen Schwan", became the most important Jewish businessman of his era, trading not only with the Fuggers and Imhoffs,

but also with the nobility and the Church.[10] In the early 17th century the Habsburgs employed the services of Jacob Bassevi of Prague, Joseph Pincherle of Gorizia, and Moses and Jacob Marburger of Gradisca.

 

At the dawn of mercantilism, while most Sephardi Jews were primarily active in the west in maritime and colonial trade, the Ashkenazi Jews in the service of the emperor and princes tended toward domestic trade.[11]

They were mostly wealthy businessmen, distinguished above their co-religionists by their commercial instincts and their adaptability. Court Jews frequently came into conflict with court rivals and co-religionists.

 

The court Jews, as the agents of the rulers, and in times of war as the purveyors and the treasurers of the state, enjoyed special privileges.

They were under the jurisdiction of the court marshal, and were not compelled to wear the Jews' badge.

They were permitted to stay wherever the Emperor held his court, and to live anywhere in the Holy Roman Empire, even in places where no other Jews were allowed.

Wherever they settled they could buy houses, slaughter meat according to the Jewish ritual, and maintain a rabbi. They could sell their goods wholesale and retail, and could not be taxed or assessed higher than the Christians.

Jews were sometimes assigned the role of local tax collectors.

More German troops arrive near Russian border

Berlin has deployed the first soldiers from a promised 4,800-strong force to Lithuania

 

Germany has sent an advance military team to Lithuania as part of plans for a full-strength armor brigade permanently stationed in the Baltic state, which borders Russia. Moscow hasdescribed the mission as a threat that requires “special measures” in response.

 

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius was among those to see off 21 military service members and civilian employees who departed on Monday from Berlin to Vilnius. The minister praised the Bundeswehr deployment as “a clear signal of solidarity” with Germany’s fellow NATO member.

 

The Lithuanian Brigade, or Panzerbrigade 45, is set to include some 4,800 soldiers and 200 civilian employees by the time it becomes fully operational in 2027. It will be hosted at the Rudninkai training ground in the southeast of the country as well as near the town of Rukla. Some German troops will be located just 20km from the border with Belarus, a key Russian ally. Lithuania also borders the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

 

Lithuania, which has for years been upgrading the infrastructure needed to house foreign troops, has described the German deployment as historic. The arrival of the advance team four months after the roadmap for the permanent mission was signed heralds “a new page of a deeper Lithuanian-German partnership,” Defense Minister Laurynas Kasciunas declared as he welcomed the troops.

 

Vilnius has touted the German force as a deterrent against Russia, although Moscow perceives it as yet more evidence that NATO is encroaching on its borders.

 

“This continues an escalation of tension, the creation of hotspots of threats to us at our borders, which will certainly require special measures to ensure our security,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

 

Moscow has accused Washington of ignoring its concerns over NATO enlargement in Europe, which was done in breach of promises made to the Soviet leadership when it agreed to German unification in the early 1990s.

 

The current hostilities between Moscow and Kiev, which the US-led military bloc claims requires an increased presence in Eastern Europe and the Baltics, was triggered by NATO’s creeping expansion into Ukraine, according to Russian officials.

 

Since 2017, German troops have been part of the so-called ‘enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup Lithuania’, a multinational 1,700-strong force stationed in Rukla.

‘High-intensity war in Europe no longer a fantasy’ – Borrell

A full-scale military conflict in Europe has become more likely due to the standoff with Russia, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has claimed, while warning member states against relying on the US to defend them.

 

Several other European officials have cited a heightened military threat in recent months, with UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps saying last week that the world is moving from a “post-war to a pre-war” state due to the alleged threat emanating from Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk made a similar “pre-war”assessment in March.

 

Speaking at a Forum Europa gathering in Brussels on Tuesday, Borrell claimed that the “possibility of a high-intensity conventional war in Europe is no longer a fantasy” and that the bloc must “do everything to avoid it.

 

The EU’s top diplomat alleged that Russia poses a growing threat to the continent, citing the conflict with Ukraine, and accused Moscow of seeking to destabilize the union.

 

According to Borrell, while a military conflict in Europe is not imminent and “not going to start tomorrow,”citizens should understand that the “US umbrella that has protected us during the Cold War and after, may not be open all the time.”

 

“Maybe,depending on who is ruling Washington, we cannot rely on the Americans’ supportand American capacity to protect us,”he said. (They really hate Trump, the only president that made them accountable, they love Joe though)

 

Describing the EU as being surrounded by a “ring of fires” and instability, Borrell called on member states to become more self-sufficient with their security and to ramp up their defense spending.

The diplomat acknowledged that Brussels’ stance on theconflicts in Gaza and in Ukraine is not fully sharedby many non-Western audiences.

 

Borrel’s remarks follow suggestions from numerous Western civilian and military officials in recent months that Russia could attack NATO within a few years.

 

Speaking in late March, Russian PresidentVladimir Putin dismissed such speculation as “nonsense.” He argued that talk of a potential Russian attack on Poland, the Czech Republic, or the Baltic countries ispropaganda coming from governmentsthat seek to scare their citizens “to extract additional expenses from people, to make them bear this burden on their shoulders.”

His latest denial came on Tuesday, while he was discussing X on ‘In Good Company’, a podcast. Host Nicolai Tangen suggested that Russian activity via fake accounts was “huge”in Germany.

 

“We don’t see a lot of Russian activity, to be frank, on the system. We see very little,” Musk responded. “We do see a lot of attempts to influence things, but they seem to be coming from the West, not from Russia.”

 

Tangen’s remark apparently referred to claims made by Berlin in January. The German government said that the use of specialized monitoring software had allowed it to identify an estimated 50,000 fake accounts engaged in a pro-Russian misinformation campaign on X. Local press claimed that themessaging was strikingly similarto that of theright-wing opposition party AfD.

 

Germany is not alone in its wariness regarding Moscow’s influence; this week US CongressmanMike Turner, who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, accused some fellow Republicans of repeating ‘Russian propaganda’ in the chamber.

 

“It is absolutely true we see, directly coming from Russia, attempts to mask communications that are anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia messages, some of which we even hear being uttered on the House floor,” the Ohio congressman told CNN’s Jake Tapper. Similar remarks came last week from House Foreign Affairs chair Michael McCaul, another Republican lawmaker.

 

In his interview, Musk hailed X as arguably “the best source of truth on the Internet” that, he argued, by far surpasses traditional news outlets in terms of accuracy thanks to user-driven fact-checking tools.

Very interesting to say the least. Having watched this I'm wondering if a class action lawsuit by 1000's, millions, could be brought against the IRS, DOJ for fraud? Could this a RICO violation? Sierra Space has completed the first test of its logistics spacecraft, the Sierra Space Ghost. This solution aims to deliver critical defense supplies to any location on Earth within 90 minutes.

 

Sierra Space’s Axelerator incubator program has developed a new system called Ghost, which includes a deployable decelerator to protect a pre-staged payload during re-entry from orbit. This system is designed to last five years while in orbit and is equipped with pre-determined supplies that can be quickly reoriented for targeted re-entry.

 

With this new technology, operators on the ground could order pre-staged supplies already in an on-orbit inventory or positioned with rapid launch capability and deploy them down to Earth within 100 yards (90 meters) of where they are needed.

 

“As we continue to innovate at speed, this test enables us to build, test, learn and accelerate the development of a revolutionary new operational asset for national security,” said Tom Vice, CEO of Sierra Space. “We envision having an inventory of Sierra Space Ghost vehicles strategically positioned and readily accessible and deployable within 90 minutes to critical locations anywhere on Earth.”

 

The recent testing campaign included dropping the Ghost in three different configurations from up to 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) using a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter.

 

In the initial test, the system was deliberately dropped without a parachute to calculate the impact force. After witnessing tumbling during the first drop, modifications were made before proceeding to the next test. The second test involved a parachute, with the objective of achieving a precise landing to comprehend flight dynamics and speeds. The final experiment showcases the Ghost’s return capability by separating the shield portion from the payload portion mid-flight.

 

The next stage of the tests will be to develop the operational infrastructure and architecture, communication systems, and data recording to ensure seamless spacecraft operations.

 

Space, the next frontier for cargo?

Using space as a channel for rapidly transporting critical military assets is not a new idea. In the 1950s, NASA’s ambitious Project Icarus (later renamed Ithacus) imagined using a rocket “capable of carrying 1,200 troops to any trouble spot on Earth in 45 minutes.”

 

More recently, the US Department of Defense has shown interest in the potential to use the SpaceX Starship rocket as a point-to-point cargo vehicle. The US Air Force Research Laboratory (ARFL) awarded Elon Musk’s company a $102 million contract to explore these applications.

Autonomous vertical farming startup to grow crops in space in 2026

A vertical farming startup from the UK is taking its technology to new heights.

The UK Space Agency has awarded Vertical Future £1.5mn to build an autonomous farm in orbit. The high-tech veggie garden will be installed on the world’s first commercial space station.

Currently being constructed by US-based Axiom Space, the station is due to open its doors to eager astronauts in 2026.

 

Space stations are an ideal testing ground for growing fruit, veggies, and even pharmaceuticals in microgravity. The lessons learnt here will likely be critical to feeding hungry humans once (if?) we set up shop on the Moon or Mars.

“The further we go into space, the more we will need to produce while we’re there, be it food, biomaterials, or medicines,” Dr Jen Bromley, chief scientific officer at Vertical Future, told TNW. “Plant-growing facilities are seen as a part of the solution.”

Headquartered in London, Vertical Future designs, manufactures, and deploys fully-robotic vertical farms. The plants are grown under LED lights in metal boxes stacked on a shelving system towering several metres high.

Robots — capable of moving up and down and left to right — keep the crops healthy. Everything from seed treatment to harvesting is fully automated.

 

Adapting the farms for space

In space, Vertical Future’s system will need to overcome a whole new set of challenges. “The main issue is watering and feeding [the plants],” said Bromley. “In microgravity, any fluid movement needs to be carefully controlled as water doesn’t pool the same way it does on Earth.”

Vertical Future is exploring using a kind of “pillow” that will safely contain the liquid for use by the plants. This builds upon previous research at NASA where astronauts manually injected the pillows with fertirrigant (fertiliser mixed with water). The startup will now work on automating the process.

Astronauts have been experimenting with growing plants in space for decades, although these efforts have remained small-scale. Right now on the international space station (ISS), the crew receive regular shipments of freeze-dried meals to cover their dietary needs.

 

But when astronauts venture further into space — travelling for months or years — the vitamins in prepackaged foods will break down, presenting a problem for their health. Freshly grown fresh fruits and vegetables are the only viable solution.

“Plants are not just important for astronaut nutrition, there is a proven psychological benefit to eating fresh produce,” Bromley points out. “The experience of texture and flavours from fresh food cannot be underestimated for astronaut well-being. As we travel further and spend longer in space that is critical.”

Vertical Future will build the first space farm prototype this year. It plans to test the system at the ISS next year prior to deployment at the new commercial space station the year after.

 

Making vertical farming work on Earth

Vertical farming was all the rage a few years back. Startups promised a future where food could be produced locally and more sustainably. Investors rushed in to take their slice of the plant-based pie.

Last year, however, investment in vertical farming was a fraction of what it was just three years prior: €100mn, compared to over €500mn back in 2020, according to Pitchbook data.

 

While vertical farms are admittedly a great idea, the costs in both money and energy are still high compared to traditional agriculture. For this reason, even today only a tiny fraction of the foods you eat daily are grown in vertical farms.

Vertical Future used to just grow crops and sell them to restaurants and supermarkets but it wasn’t profitable so they pivoted. Now, the company focuses on selling the growing towers. Anyone from supermarkets to pharmaceutical companies can buy them.

The company believes the outcome of its space-farm mission will provide valuable lessons for growing crops back on Earth. From footwear and the computer mouse to smoke detectors and even treatments for cancer, experiments in space have long proven that solving problems can sometimes benefit from a bit of — pun intended — rocket science.

An Idaho teenager has been arrested for pledging allegiance to ISIS and planning to attack local churches.

 

Alexander Scott Mercurio, 18, of Coeur d’Alene, was arrested on Saturday, April 6, for attempting to provide material support and resources to the terror organization.

 

According to the affidavit in support of the criminal complaint, Mercurio pledged his allegiance to ISIS and “planned to attack individuals at churches in Coeur d’Alene on April 7 using weapons, including knives, firearms, and fire.”

 

Mercurio’s plan, according to the complant, was to attack his father with a metal pipe, steal his guns, and carry out a suicide attack at local churches.

 

“As alleged in the complaint, the defendant swore an oath of loyalty to ISIS and planned to wage an attack in its name on churches in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland.

Veteran National Public Radio (NPR) editor Uri Berliner published an essay on Tuesday exposing the government-funded outlet’s alleged bias during former President Donald Trump’s presidency.

Berliner, who has been at NPR for 25 years, alleges in the essay published in The Free Press that the outlet was striving to take down Trump during his presidency by citing Russia-collusion allegations that were later debunked. He also asserts that all levels of the organization were aligned on the prioritization of race and identity, leading to a lack of “viewpoint diversity” and increase in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

“Persistent rumors that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia over the election became the catnip that drove reporting,” he wrote. “At NPR, we hitched our wagon to Trump’s most visible antagonist, Representative Adam Schiff.”

“But what began as tough, straightforward coverage of a belligerent, truth-impaired president veered toward efforts to damage or topple Trump’s presidency,” he added.

Berliner also criticized the outlet’s managing editor for neglecting to cover the Hunter Biden laptop story during the 2020 presidential election, saying “We don’t want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don’t want to waste the listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions.”

NPR also based reporting on former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci’s statements on the COVID-19 pandemic originating naturally, according to Berliner.

“We became fervent members of Team Natural Origin, even declaring that the lab leak had been debunked by scientists,” he wrote. “But that wasn’t the case.”

NPR has devoted significant resources to establishing a more diverse audience, but it has not been successful, Berliner wrote.

“In 2023, according to our demographic research, 6 percent of our news audience was black, far short of the overall U.S. adult population, which is 14.4 percent black,” he wrote. “And Hispanics were only 7 percent, compared to the overall Hispanic adult population, around 19 percent. Our news audience doesn’t come close to reflecting America. It’s overwhelmingly white and progressive, and clustered around coastal cities and college towns.”

“An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don’t have an audience that reflects America,” Berliner wrote. “That wouldn’t be a problem for an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience. But for NPR, which purports to consider all things, it’s devastating both for its journalism and its business model.”

Petitioner’s contention that the availability of criminal prosecution would deter the President from taking the bold action the office requires, including military action, is profoundly ahistorical:the absence of absolute immunity has been assumedsince the Founding and has presented no challenge to Presidents discharging their duties roles that these elected and appointed civilian officials and career military leaders are called to play.

 

Second, the rule of law is critical to the military’s mission and to the people’s trust in the armed forces… This duty requires service members, who are bound to obey all lawful orders, to disregard patently unlawful orders from their superiors and prohibits service members from using such orders as a defense to criminal prosecution. Immunizing the Commander-in-Chief from criminal prosecution, as Petitioner argues for here, would fly in the face of that duty, creating the likelihood that service members will be placed in the impossible position..

 

Third, here, Petitioner’s position implicates the peaceful transition of power—a hallmark feature of American democracy—by permitting the President to take actions that would harm our national security and undermine our role as the international standard-bearer of democracy. Presidential transitions are times of significant national security risk. Leaders in the outgoing administration must prepare their successors to take the reins, and any complications in this handoff can diminish the successors’ preparedness to handle national security threats. Foreign countries also closely observe American elections—especially conflict related to the peaceful transition of power—only encourages our foreign adversaries. (surprised they didn't name Russia)

 

Relevantly here, three former military officers and officials have filed an amicus brief in claimed support of Petitioner, but they do not meaningfully defend his theory of absolute immunity—indeed, they expressly decline to endorse it. Instead, they admit that Presidents lack the authority to order the assassination of political rivals. However, they do not have an adequate answer to what happens when the President exceeds the bounds of his authority and issues unlawful orders he intends to be followed. The only solution they offer is the unfounded prediction that military officers and officials would defy presidential orders to commit crimes—at least with respect to assassinations of political rivals—and thus that immunity does not pose grave concerns. (Like the General that assassinated Hastings the journalist, like that?)

 

And the notion that predicted defiance of the Commander-in-Chief’s orders is the backstop against criminal behavior by a President is not what the Constitution provides for. It would inexorably lead to deep divisions between the armed forces’ political and military leaders and would place servicemen and women in theimpossible position of either ignoring presidential orders they are sworn to obey or committing crimes at the President’s behest in violation of their oath—for which they may be prosecuted.
