DNC, Clinton campaign agree to Steele dossier funding fine

Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee have agreed to pay $113,000 to settle a Federal Election Commission investigation into whether they violated campaign finance law by misreporting spending on research that eventually became the infamous Steele dossier.

That’s according to documents sent Tuesday to the Coolidge Reagan Foundation, which had filed an administrative complaint in 2018 accusing the Democrats of misreporting payments made to a law firm during the 2016 campaign to obscure the spending.

The Clinton campaign hired Perkins Coie, which then hired Fusion GPS, a research and intelligence firm, to conduct opposition research on Republican candidate Donald Trump’s ties to Russia. But on FEC forms, the Clinton campaign classified the spending as legal services.

“By intentionally obscuring their payments through Perkins Coie and failing to publicly disclose the true purpose of those payments,” the campaign and DNC “were able to avoid publicly reporting on their statutorily required FEC disclosure forms the fact that they were paying Fusion GPS to perform opposition research on Trump with the intent of influencing the outcome of the 2016 presidential election,” the initial complaint had read.

The Clinton campaign and DNC had argued that the payments had been described accurately, but agreed, according to the documents, to settle without conceding to avoid further legal costs.

The Clinton campaign agreed to a civil penalty of $8,000 and the DNC $105,000, according to a pair of conciliatory agreements that were attached to the letter sent to the Coolidge Reagan Foundation.

The documents have not yet been made public and FEC spokeswoman Judith Ingram said the FEC has 30 days after parties are notified about enforcement matters to release them.

The Steele dossier was a report compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele and financed by Democrats that included salacious allegations about Trump’s conduct in Russia and allegations about ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Documents have shown the FBI invested significant resources attempting to corroborate the dossier and relied substantially on it to obtain surveillance warrants targeting former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.

But the dossier has been largely discredited since its publication, with core aspects of the material exposed as unsupported and unproven rumors. A special counsel assigned to investigate the origins of the Trump-Russia probe charged one of Steele’s sources with lying to the FBI and charged a cybersecurity lawyer who worked for Clinton’s campaign with lying to the FBI during a 2016 meeting in which he relayed concerns about the Russia-based Alfa Bank.

Trump, who has railed against the dossier for years, released a statement celebrating the agreement and once again slamming the dossier as “a Hoax funded by the DNC and the Clinton Campaign.”

A DNC spokesperson played down the decision, saying: “We settled aging and silly complaints from the 2016 election about ‘purpose descriptions’ in our FEC report.” The lawyer representing both the campaign and the DNC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

More than 250,000 migrant children arrived alone in the U.S. in 2021 and 2022, a sharp increase over prior years. This is a lengthy post, and we’d recommend having an anger management strategy to hand while reading. If you are making a comment, use the numbering to highlight which points you are referring to, and do let us know if we’ve missed anything.

  1. Pfizer misled the public.

• In May 2021, Pfizer advertised to Kansans on Facebook about its “life-saving vaccines” and its “cures.” Upon information and belief, Pfizer intended for Kansans to think of its Covid-19 vaccine when it discussed “life-saving vaccines” and “cures.” Pfizer ran three different ads between May 4, 2021 and June 1, 2021 that received 165,000 to 190,000 impressions.”

• Pfizer received emergency use authorization for its Covid-19 vaccine inindividuals 16 years of age and older on December 11, 2020.

• Pfizer received FDA approval on August 23, 2021. From 2021 to 2023, Pfizer received emergency use authorizations in children from six months to 15 years of age.

  1. Pfizer used confidentiality agreements to conceal critical data relating to the safety and effectiveness of its Covid-19 vaccine.

• Pfizer effectively had a veto over the federal government’s communications.

  1. Pfizer used its confidentiality agreements with the US government and others to conceal, suppress, and omit material facts relating to Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine, including the safety and efficacy of the vaccine.

  2. Pfizer used an extended study timeline to conceal critical data – the study was repeatedly delayed.

• Pfizer planned to provide researchers with access to patient-level data and fullclinical study reports 24 months after study completion. Protocol C4591001

• Pfizer estimated that it would complete the study by January 27, 2023, but that estimated date fell back to February 2024 because of a late vaccination of a single study participant (out of 44,000 participants).

• Pfizer’s control of the data allowed the company to selectively publish results for which the underlying data could not be independently evaluated.

  1. Pfizer says it will make data from vaccine trials approved in the US available 18 months after the primary study completion date. Pfizer, Data Access Requests.

• Upon information and belief, Pfizer has still not made its complete study data available to researchers.

  1. The FDA did not make the safety and effectiveness data for Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine immediately available.

• The FDA denied expedited processing of PHMPTA’s FOIA request and claimed inlitigation that it would take 55 years—until 2076

• In January 2022, a federal judge rejected the FDA’s proposed production of 500 pages per month and ordered the FDA to instead produce 55,000 pages per month

  1. Pfizer destroyed the vaccine control group.

• Pfizer planned to follow Covid-19 vaccine study participants, both vaccine andplacebo recipients for 24 months to monitor the safety and effectiveness of its vaccine.

• Once the FDA approved Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine through an emergency use authorization in December 2020, Pfizer unblinded the study participants and offered vaccine placebo recipients the option to receive the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine.

• Only 1,544 placebo participants had not received the vaccine as of March 13, 2021, just 7% of the original placebo group.

  1. In its press release announcing emergency use authorization of its Covid-19 vaccine, Pfizer did not disclose that it had excluded immunocompromised individuals from its Covid-19 vaccine trials.

• Instead, in “Important Safety Information” in its press release, Pfizer noted that

• “[i]mmunocompromised persons, including individuals receiving immunosuppressant therapy, may have a diminished immune response to the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine.”

  1. Pfizer knew its Covid-19 vaccine was connected to serious adverse events, including myocarditis and pericarditis.

• Pfizer maintained its own adverse events database that “contain[ed] cases of [adverse events (AEs)] reported spontaneously to Pfizer, cases reported by the health authorities, cases published in the medical literature, cases from Pfizer-sponsored marketing programs, non-interventional studies, and cases of serious AEs reported from clinical studies regardless of causality assessment.”

• Upon information and belief, Pfizer’s adverse events database contained moreadverse event data than VAERS because it included both information in VAERS and information not in VAERS….

We would like to discuss the issue with a relevant expert at CDC.”

• Upon information and belief, Pfizer had knowledge of the medical reports in Israel related to its vaccine and myocarditis and pericarditis because Israel agreed to share medical data with Pfizer.

• At the time of Pfizer Chairman and CEO Dr. Bourla’s January 18, 2023 denial of any safety signals, the CDC’s website reported that “[d]ata from multiple studies show a rare risk for myocarditis and/or pericarditis following receipt of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.’

• According to a leaked confidential February 2022 Pfizer document, “[s]ince April2021, increased cases of myocarditis and pericarditis have been reported in the United States after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination (Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna), particularly in adolescents and young adults (CDC 2021).”

  1. After Pfizer obtained FDA approval through emergency use authorization to provide its Covid-19 vaccine to 12-15-year-olds in August 2021, Pfizer decided to study “how often” its vaccine may cause myocarditis or pericarditis in children by testing 5-16-year-olds for troponin I.

• Pfizer warned children participants that after receiving Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine,“[y]ou might get chest pain, shortness of breath, or feelings of having a fast-beating, fluttering or pounding heart. • Pfizer press releases did not disclose an increased risk of myocarditis from Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine until November 2021. Posts falsely claim Pfizer ‘officially admits’ heart inflammation is Covid jab side effect in 2023.

• Upon information and belief, at the time of Pfizer Chairman and CEO Dr. Bourla’s January 2023 representation that Pfizer had not observed a single safety signal related to Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine, Pfizer was aware of a safety signal relating to myocarditis and pericarditis.

• Although CDC later suggested a link was “very unlikely,” a FDA study found that individuals 85 years or older who received both a flu vaccine and Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine“saw a 20 percent increase in the risk of ischemic stroke.”

Take a Summer Cosmic Road Trip With NASA’s Chandra and Webb

It’s time to take a cosmic road trip using light as the highway and visit four stunning destinations across space. The vehicles for this space get-away are NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and James Webb Space Telescope.

The first stop on this tour is the closest, Rho Ophiuchi, at a distance of about 390 light-years from Earth. Rho Ophiuchi is a cloud complex filled with gas and stars of different sizes and ages.

Being one of the closest star-forming regions, Rho Ophiuchi is a great place for astronomers to study stars. In this image, X-rays from Chandra are purple revealing infant stars that violently flare and produce X-rays.

Infrared data from Webb are red, yellow, cyan, light blue and darker blue and provide views of the spectacular regions of gas and dust.

 

The next destination is the Orion Nebula. Still located in the Milky Way galaxy, this region is a little bit farther from our home planet at about 1,500 light-years away.

If you look just below the middle of the three stars that make up the “belt” in the constellation of Orion, you may be able to see this nebula through a small telescope.

With Chandra and Webb, however, we get to see so much more. Chandra reveals young stars that glow brightly in X-rays, colored in red, green, and blue, while Webb shows the gas and dust in darker red that will help build the next generation of stars here.

 

It’s time to leave our galaxy and visit another. Like the Milky Way, NGC 3627 is a spiral galaxy that we see at a slight angle. NGC 3627 is known as a “barred” spiral galaxy because of the rectangular shape of its central region.

From our vantage point, we can also see two distinct spiral arms that appear as arcs.

X-rays from Chandra in purple show evidence for a supermassive black hole in its center while Webb finds the dust, gas, and stars throughout the galaxy in red, green, and blue.

This image also contains optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope in red, green, and blue.

 

Our final landing place on this trip is the farthest and the biggest. MACS J0416 is a galaxy cluster, which are among the largest objects in the Universe held together by gravity.

Galaxy clusters like this can contain hundreds or even thousands of individual galaxies all immersed in massive amounts of superheated gas that Chandra can detect.

In this view, Chandra’s X-rays in purple show this reservoir of hot gas while Hubble and Webb pick up the individual galaxies in red, green, and blue.

The Talara Air Base, a strategic installation of the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) located on the coast of the Piura region, is poised to become the Spaceport in an ambitious project by the Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) to build one in the northern desert.

Peruvian Ambassador to the United States, Alfredo Ferrero, has just reported progress on the project under the Artemis Accords, which Peru signed at the end of last May at the headquarters of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Washington.

 

The agreement would locally drive space development, being part of NASA’s upcoming space exploration projects in the coming years, and would promote information exchange with countries that are more advanced in scientific and technological fields, he reported.

Additionally, the State’s Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN) would promote the idea under the Assets Projects (PA) modality, with an estimated investment of S/ 1,000 million, making it the most relevant of the package entrusted by MINDEF.

 

All of this could position Peru strategically within the global aerospace arena, reinforcing its relationship with the United States, although it may also involve relocating the No. 11 Air Group that has operated there for over 70 years.

Talara, a petroleum port 1,100 kilometers north of Lima, has been home since 1977 to the oldest fleet of Russian-Soviet combat aircraft in Peru, despite being originally built by the U.S. during World War II to protect the Panama Canal zone. It housed the FAP’s most powerful air defense system, the medium-range S-125 Neva/Pechora, operated Sukhoi Su-22 fighter-bombers for over 25 years, and now hosts recently upgraded Su-25 attack aircraft by SEMAN Peru.

How, when and where to see 2024's second 'Manhattanhenge' this week

New Yorkers are about to experience the second "Manhattanhenge" of the year. Friday, July 12, and Saturday, July 13, are the evenings to be outside at sunset to capture a magical moment.

On those dates, only the sun will set on the grid, between skyscrapers, as seen from any east-west street in Manhattan.

The bi-annual event's nickname comes, of course, from England's Stonehenge, where the rising sun on June's summer solstice aligns with the neolithic monument's Heel Stone.

 

In New York, things are different. Unlike any European city, its streets are aligned east-west and north-south, though the resulting grid layout isn't perfectly aligned. It's aligned 29 degrees east of true north.

The result is that the sun sets on the grid at sunset exactly 22 and 23 days before the June solstice (which already occurred on May 28 and 29, with only the latter visible in a clear sky) and 22 and 23 days after.

"What will future civilizations think of Manhattan Island when they dig it up and find a carefully laid out network of streets and avenues?" said Neil deGrasse Tyson, head of the Hayden Planetarium at New York's American Museum of Natural History who coined the term Manhattanhenge.

"Surely the grid would be presumed to have astronomical significance."

 

There are two dates for Manhattanhenge this weekend. On both evenings, you'll see the sun set between the skyscrapers as long as you stand on one of Manhattan's main east-west thoroughfares at sunset, but the spectacle is subtly different on each evening.

Here's what you'll see, and when, on Friday and Saturday:

On this date, at precisely 8:20 p.m. EDT, the sun will set on Manhattan's grid. Its entire disk will appear above the grids and be visible between skyscrapers from Manhattan's east-west streets.

New Yorkers looking west at 8:21 p.m. EDT tonight will see a half-sun about to disappear beneath the Manhattan grid, a moment known as the "kiss the grid" moment.

 

"These two days happen to correspond with Memorial Day and Baseball's All Star break," says deGrasse Tyson.

"Future anthropologists might conclude that, via the sun, the people who called themselves Americans worshipped War and Baseball."

He advises that the best places to witness Manhattanhenge from are on 14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street, 42nd Street and 57th Street.

 

There are two occurrences of Manhattanhenge on either side of the solstice because the sunset point varies throughout the year.

As seen from the northern hemisphere, the sun rises due east only at the equinoxes in March and September.

The sun rises at its most northeast point on the horizon on June's solstice.

Since the grid is oriented 29 degrees east of true north, the sunrise points 22 and 23 days before and after the solstice align with it.

 

It's the opposite in winter when the sun sets at its most southeasterly point on the horizon on December's solstice.

So why aren't there Manhattanhenges 22 and 23 days before and after that date?

EU says X’s blue tick accounts deceive users

 

Elon Musk's social media site X has been accused by the European Union of breaching its online content rules, with its "verified" blue tick accounts having the potential to "deceive" users.

 

The bloc's tech regulator said users could be duped into thinking the identity of those with blue tick marks was verified, when in fact anybody can pay for a blue tick. It said it had found evidence of "malicious actors" abusing the system.

 

It also found a lack of transparency around advertising and said X did not provide data for research use as required under EU rules.

 

The ruling could lead to X being fined up to 6% of its global annual turnover and being forced to change how it operates in the bloc.

 

The BBC has contacted X for comment. Elon Musk bought the platform, formerly Twitter, for $44bn in 2022.

 

The findings follow a seven month investigation under the Digital Services Act (DSA) which requires big tech firms, like X, to take action to stop illegal content and safeguard the public.

President Trump debuted this new gem on Truth Social, and the internet buzz followed instantly. Dan Scavino, one of Trump’s most loyal aides, shared the clip, and it’s already creating waves online.

 

Speaking of humor, President Trump recently had a field day poking fun at poor ol’ Joe about his age. And as we all know, age is just a number—until you start losing your marbles.

 

Again, Trump nailed it with this latest ad, using Joe’s infamous “America is back” line, which is laughable when you look at what he’s done to drive hard-working Americans into a black hole of despair. It’s gotten so bad that people can’t even afford a pack of chicken breasts.

From what I've read, I actually dug on this because I was curious after finding out about how Joe & O got together, he was the literal last minute pick. it was between him & Christy, who was practically salivating to get it. Trump met him, went to dinner at his & his wife's home and because Pence did not beg him to be picked, he was. JPM Reports Record Quarterly Income After Surge In One-Time Items, ‘Unexpectedly’ Boosts Loan Loss Reserves

 

And we're off: Q2 earnings season has officially open after two of the largest US banks - JPM and Wells - reported results moments ago, with what was a bit of a mixed bag. We will cover Wells elsewhere, but here are the highlights for the largest US commercial bank, JPMorgan.

Here is a summary of what JPM just reported for Q2:

  • Adjusted Revenue $50.99BN, up $8.6BN from a year ago, but not comparable to estimates for reasons outlined below

* Investment banking revenue $2.46 billion, +46% y/y, beating estimates of $2.13 billion

* FICC sales & trading revenue $4.82 billion, +4.6% y/y, missing estimates of $4.85 billion

* Equities sales & trading revenue $2.97 billion, +21% y/y, beating estimates of $2.66 billion

* Advisory revenue $785 million, +45% y/y, beating estimates of  $640.5 million

* Equity underwriting rev. $495 million, +56% y/y, beating estimates of $387.6 million

* Debt underwriting rev. $1.08 billion, +51% y/y, beating estimates of $905.9 million

  • EPS $6.12, up $1.37 from a year ago and includes significant one-time items

  • EPS excluding significant items was $4.40

  • Compensation expenses $12.95 billion, beating estimates of $12.72 billion

 

Overall, a strong showing except that miss by FIC (more on that below). What is notable is that for yet another quarter JPM reported record quarterly profit of $18.1 billion, up $3.7 billion YoY,  thanks to revenue beats by the company's equity traders and investment bankers, while Net Interest Income printed at $22.86BN, just above the $22.82BN expected (the "unmanaged" number came in just below estimates) even though the net yield on interest-earning assets was 2.62% below the estimate of 2.65%. That said, much of the bottom-line surge was one-time as JPM took a multibillion-dollar gain ($7.9BN pretax) tied to a Visa share exchange.

The bank also recorded $546 million in net investment securities losses: it will be interesting to find out what this is and if JPM has quietly been cultivating yet another CIO "whale".Strip those away and JPM's net income was only $13.1 billion, down from both a quarter ago and from a year ago.. Also of note, JPM's return on equity hit 23%, and that’s up to 28% if you follow the bank’s ROTCE stat. As for the bank's CET1 capital ratios, the standard came in at 15.3% and advanced hit 15.5%. This means that the bank’s total loss-absorbing capacity is now $534 billion.

 

Something else worth noting: JPM revealed that its Q2 stock buybacks jumped to $4.9 billion from $2.8 billion last quarter.This took place even before the Fed greenlighted more shareholder returns on June 28 - the last day of the quarter - which means Jamie Dimon frontran the "successful" stress test results.

What we also find notable is that in a reversal from last quarter, the bank actually built reserves by $821 million (vs a $72 million release in Q1): this was the biggest reserve build since the bank crash quarter in Q2 2023 when the bank added $1.5 billion in reserves. This meant that provision for credit losses rose to $3.05 billion, above the $2.83 billion expected even as total charge-offs came in at $2.23 billion, just below the $2.26 billion expected.(and whatever they don’t use in the loss provision bucket gets applied back on to the balance sheet as earned income-they all do this and are allowed)

 

Looking at the bank's balance sheet and consumer banking division, there were no major surprises here, with total deposits down 1% YoY to $2.40TN (vs est $2.43TN), and flat QoQ, while total loans (including First Republic) were up 6% YoY to $1.32TN, and also flat QoQ.

SpaceX Starlink Mission

 

On July 11, 2024, SpaceX launched Falcon 9 with 20 Starlink satellites from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base. Falcon 9’s first stage performed nominally, carrying the second stage and Starlink satellites to orbit, separating from the second stage as expected, and returning to Earth for a successful droneship landing, representing SpaceX’s 329th recovery of an orbital class rocket to-date.

 

Falcon 9’s second stage performed its first burn nominally. However, a liquid oxygen leak developed on the second stage. After a planned relight of the upper stage engine to raise perigee – or the lowest point of orbit – the Merlin Vacuum engine experienced an anomaly and was unable to complete its second burn. Although the stage survived and still deployed the satellites, it did not successfully circularize its orbit. This left the satellites in an eccentric orbit with a very low perigee of 135 km, which is less than half the expected perigee altitude.

 

The team worked overnight to make contact with the satellites in order to send early burn commands, but the satellites were left in an enormously high-drag environment only 135 km above the Earth (each pass through perigee removed 5+ km of altitude from the orbit’s apogee, or the highest point in the satellite orbit). At this level of drag, our maximum available thrust is unlikely to be enough to successfully raise the satellites. As such, the satellites will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and fully demise. They do not pose a threat to other satellites in orbit or to public safety.

President Biden previously held a different opinion about unpopular presidents running for re-election back in 1979, according to comments unearthed by the Wall Street Journal.

 

• The publication wrote that although Biden was the first sitting senator to endorse President Jimmy Carter during his first campaign, he hesitated to support Carter for re-election in 1980. At the time, Biden suggested that Carter was not the candidate who could win the White House that year.

• “That man’s in trouble, politically in trouble,” Biden told the Wilmington Evening Journal in 1979.

• According to the WSJ, “Biden had held off on publicly backing Carter because he wanted to endorse a candidate who would ensure Democrats retained the White House in the 1980 election. ‘I’m not certain that’s Jimmy Carter right now,’ he told the paper.”

• The WSJ pointed out that, while inflation spiked under President Biden, in part due to his $2 trillion stimulus package, a 1978 Biden re-election ad railed against the inflation that was plaguing the country under Carter. “The spiraling costs of inflation are ripping into the fabric of American society … We must bring these problems under control and the first place to start is with the cost of government,” it said.

• Biden eventually supported and campaigned for Carter during the 1980 election season. However, he still privately voiced issues about the sitting president.

FAMU President Dr. Larry Robinson to step down

 

Dr. Larry Robinson, president of Florida A&M University (FAMU), announced in a letter to the university’s Board of Trustees Chair on Friday that he will step down after nearly seven years in the role.

 

The exact date of Robinson’s departure will be determined with the Board of Trustees. Lunar spacecraft receive dozens of collision warnings

Even a few spacecraft in orbit around the moon can create dozens of warnings of potential collisions and require several maneuvers, suggesting the need for more robust coordination mechanisms.

In a presentation at the Secure World Foundation’s Summit for Space Sustainability here July 11, Soyoung Chung, senior researcher at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute’s (KARI’s) strategy and planning directorate, said her agency had received 40 “red alarms” of potential collisions among spacecraft orbiting the moon in the last 18 months.

 

The warnings primarily involve close approaches involving KARI’s Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO), NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter from India’s space agency ISRO, which are all in similar low orbits around the moon.

The three agencies voluntarily share information about the orbits of their spacecraft using a NASA platform called MADCAP that generates collision warnings.

Since KPLO entered orbit around the moon in December 2022, that system has generated 40 warnings, called red alarms, of potential conjunctions.

Some are “naturally resolved,” she said, as improved orbital data shows no risk of a collision. Others can be handed by having one of the spacecraft perform a routine maneuver to maintain its orbit.

 

“But for some of them, you need to have a specific maneuver just to avoid this potential collision,” she said. KPLO has performed three such maneuvers so far, one to avoid a close approach to LRO, another to avoid Chandrayaan-2 and a third to avoid Japan’s Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) spacecraft shortly before its January landing.

The SLIM conjunction, she noted, required a decision on the maneuver within a day to avoid conflicting with its landing.

Collision avoidance maneuvers around the moon are not unprecedented. In 2021, Chandrayaan-2 maneuvered to avoid a close approach to LRO after coordination between ISRO and NASA.

At the time, neither agency disclosed the frequency of those potential conjunctions.

 

The magnitude of potential collisions among spacecraft in lunar orbit now, though, has not been widely discussed publicly. “This is something real that we haven’t discussed much,” Chung said.

The issue, she noted, highlights the lack of formal processes and procedures for coordinating spacecraft around the moon, a problem that will only grow worse as more companies and countries send missions there.

“Right now, there’s no mutually agreed-upon international consultation mechanism or protocol to resolve such collision risks,” she said. The coordination among ISRO, KARI and NASA is a voluntary system that others, like China, have not participated in.

“Not all actors are involved in this process.”

 

There is also no formal mechanism for determining which spacecraft performs a collision avoidance maneuver if required.

Such maneuvers can disrupt spacecraft operations as well as consume fuel that reduces the spacecraft’s lifetime. She said later that KARI agreed to perform those three KPLO maneuvers because it had more fuel available.

“With our experience of operating KPLO, we realize there is a need for an information-sharing platform and mutually agreed-upon international protocols to identify and manage the risk of collisions between the missions around the moon just like we do on the Earth,” she said.

One mechanism for doing so may be through the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

The committee agreed at its meeting last month to establish an Action Team on Lunar Activities Consultation, based on a proposal from the Republic of Korea and Romania.

Chung said coordination mechanisms for lunar spacecraft will be one of the topic the action team will consider.

Armada has raised an extra $40 million through a Microsoft-led funding round to develop mobile data centers tailored for SpaceX’s Starlink broadband network, the San Francisco-based startup announced July 11.

The venture, which said it has received around $100 million from investors after emerging from stealth six months ago, is first focusing on deploying artificial intelligence computing tools designed to empower remotely connected devices.

 

Microsoft is offering these software tools on its Azure cloud computing marketplace following the investment by its venture capital arm M12.

The software includes Armada’s digital platform for managing Starlink terminals and other connected assets such as sensors and drones.

Ultimately, Armada aims to offer ruggedized data centers the size of shipping containers for its cloud computing ecosystem called Galleons, which would enable customers to process data faster and more efficiently on-site — known as edge computing.

 

Armada said Galleons would be integrated with satellites in low Earth orbit thanks to a deep collaboration with Starlink, but did not provide details.

SpaceX has not responded to requests to comment on the startup.

Satellite-connected Galleons would enable off-the-grid customers to process data in real-time, according to Armada, and use generative artificial intelligence services typically confined to areas with terrestrial connectivity.

 

The startup said its technology has been deployed in 43 countries by customers, including global oil and gas conglomerates, entertainment companies and state government agencies.

“M12 has witnessed the swift progression of edge AI infrastructure towards practical use through years of investments,” M12 managing partner Michael Stewart said in a statement, adding:

“We are confident that Armada will pioneer a definitive guide for implementing edge AI across various challenging sectors.”

We’ve just come across a document hosted by the Department of Homeland Security, posted March 2023, but written in 2007, that amounts to a full-blown corporatist imposition on the US, abolishing anything remotely resembling the Bill of Rights and Constitutional law. It is right there in plain sight for anyone curious enough to dig.

 

There is nothing in it that you haven’t already experienced with lockdowns. What makes it interesting are the participants in the forging of the plan, which is pretty much the whole of corporate America as it stood in 2007. It was a George W. Bush initiative. The conclusions are startling.

 

“Quarantine is a legally enforceable declaration that a government body may institute over individuals potentially exposed to a disease, but who are not symptomatic. If enacted, Federal quarantine laws will be coordinated between CDC and State and local public health officials, and, if necessary, law enforcement personnel…The government may also enact travel restrictions to limit the movement of people and products between geographic areas in an effort to limit disease transmission and spread. Authorities are currently reviewing possible plans to curtail international travel upon a pandemic’s emergence overseas.

 

“Limiting public assembly opportunities also helps limit the spread of disease. Concert halls, movie theaters, sports arenas, shopping malls, and other large public gathering places might close indefinitely during a pandemic—whether because of voluntary closures or government-imposed closures. Similarly, officials may close schools and non-essential businesses during pandemic waves in an effort to significantly slow disease transmission rates. These strategies aim to prevent the close interaction of individuals, the primary conduit of spreading the influenza virus. Even taking steps such as limiting person-to-person interactions within a distance of three feet or avoiding instances of casual close contact, such as shaking hands, will help limit disease spread.”

 

There we have it: the pandemic plans. They once seemed abstract. In 2020, they became very real. Your rights were deleted. No more freedom even to have house guests. In those days, the rule was to enforce only three feet of distance rather than six feet of distance, neither of which had any basis in science. Indeed, the actual scientific literature even at that time recommended against any physical interventions designed to limit the spread of respiratory viruses. They were known not to work. The entire profession of public health accepted that.

General Atomics to build second Space Force weather satellite

The U.S. Space Force awarded General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems a contract for a second weather satellite.

Under the Space Systems Command contract modification announced July 11, General Atomics will provide three years of operational services for two Electro-Optical Weather System, or EWS, satellites.

 

“We are currently working toward the delivery of the first EWS satellite and associated ground systems, with spacecraft build and EO/IR payload testing well underway,” Scott Forney, president of General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems said in a statement.

“We are excited to begin the build and integration of a second EWS satellite to help support USSF efforts to extend [electro-optical/infrared] data collection capabilities as legacy DMSP satellites are retired.”

 

The Space Force is purchasing small weather satellites to replace the larger spacecraft launched decades ago through the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program.

In 2020, the Space Force tapped General Atomics, Orion Space Solutions and Raytheon Technologies to design a prototype EWS satellite.

Two years later, San Diego-based General Atomics and Orion Space Solutions of Louisville, Colorado, each won contracts to develop and launch satellites to demonstrate weather imaging and cloud characterization.

 

The contract modification “is a testament to GA-EMS’ ability to design and deliver advanced EWS satellites that will provide timely, accurate weather data to support Department of Defense operations across all domains,” Forney said.

Under the new contract modification, General Atomics is the prime contractor responsible for developing, building, assembling, integrating and testing the spacecraft bus and electro-optical/infrared payload.

Subcontractors include Atmospheric and Environmental Research Inc. and Parsons Corp.

 

Gregg Burgess, GA-EMS Space Systems vice president, said in a statement that the company “continues to make excellent progress toward meeting EWS mission requirements.”

U.S. military to award $3 billion contract for AI-driven intelligence

The U.S. military is poised to award a $3 billion multi-year contract for commercial data and analytics services to monitor potential threats across the Indo-Pacific region, a focal point of global geopolitics and a priority theater for the Department of Defense.

The program, known as Long-Range Enterprise Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Activity (LEIA), seeks to procure a wide spectrum of commercial data and advanced AI-driven analytics, integrating information from ground, aerial, and space-based platforms.

The LEIA contract, expected to be awarded later this year, is the follow-on to a $1 billion deal awarded in 2020 to defense and intelligence contractor SMX, which is now being recompeted.

 

The program is coordinated by the Special Operations Command Pacific that supports U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM).

LEIA is a much larger contract than the one it’s replacing, reflecting the U.S. military’s growing demand for commercial solutions and AI-driven analytics to track and respond to potential threats, said Paul Reynolds, chief technologist at SMX.

The company is competing for the LEIA contract. Other contenders include defense and intelligence contractors Peraton and Booz Allen Hamilton.

 

“With LEIA, we are seeing an increased investment from the government to leverage commercial technology and data.” Reynolds told SpaceNews.

SMX’s platform analyzes data from approximately 300 commercial sources, including satellite imaging constellations like Umbra, Capella Space, Satellogic Planet, and Sentinel.

SMX is one of several firms providing commercially-based intelligence to U.S. military agencies under the U.S. Space Force’s Tactical Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Tracking (TacSRT) program — a pilot initiative designed to leverage commercial space capabilities for providing rapid intelligence and analytics to military commanders.

 

U.S. INDOPACOM in the LEIA solicitation emphasized commanders’ needs for timely ISR and space-based capabilities to maintain situational awareness in the region.

The military’s appetite for AI-powered data analytics stems from the challenge of information overload, as governments have increasing access to data but not necessarily insights.

President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are defying critics calling for the president to step away from the 2024 presidential race by launching a full offensive aimed at tying former President Trump to the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 platform.

 

The effort comes amid Trump's attempt to distance himself from Project 2025, a highly scrutinized initiative that's been portrayed as a blueprint for a future Republican administration to restructure many parts of the U.S. government. Trump has described elements of the plan as "ridiculous" and "abysmal."

 

It also comes as Biden faces increased calls from many in his own party to bow out of the race following a disappointing showing in the first presidential debate last month.

 

"Donald Trump’s Project 2025 team is stacked with the same extremists who helped him rip away women’s freedoms, round up and deport Latinos, and undermine our democracy in his first term," Biden campaign spokeswoman Sarafina Chitika told Fox News Digital.

 

"If Trump wins this election, his Project 2025 allies will work around the clock to make sure he can go even further to ban abortion nationwide, gut Social Security and Medicare, and rule as a ‘dictator on day one.’ Donald Trump and Project 2025 are one and the same — and voters are going to make sure they both lose this November."

 

Although it's not officially associated with Trump's campaign, Chitika's use of the term "Trump's Project 2025 team" is a reference to the individuals who created the initiative in 2023 largely having previously held roles within the former president's administration, including Paul Dans, who directed the project and served as Trump's White House Liaison to the Office of Personnel Management.

 

Dans' associates constructing the initiative, Spencer Chretien and Troup Hemenway, served respectively as a special assistant to Trump and in the Presidential Personnel Office. In fact, 81% of individuals who worked on the initiative held formal roles within the Trump administration, and some current aides have also assisted with the project.

 

Biden and Harris' rhetoric on the campaign trail in recent weeks has sought to shift focus to the project, not just as a likely distraction from the pressure facing Biden, but also because they see it as a winning message to moderate swing state voters who could very well decide the election.

 

"Trump’s advisers have created a 900-page blueprint — called ‘Project 2025’ — detailing everything else they plan to do in a second term, including a plan to cut Social Security, repeal our $35 cap on insulin, eliminate the Department of Education and end programs like Head Start," Harris said at a campaign stop in Nevada on Tuesday.

 

"Donald Trump wants to turn our democracy into a dictatorship, and the Supreme Court basically just declared he can get away with it," she later added, referencing the Supreme Court's ruling last week that a president has substantial immunity from prosecution for official acts committed while in office.

 

Trump disavowed Project 2025 in a post on Truth Social last week, saying he didn't know who was behind the initiative that offers recommendations on how a future Republican presidentcan begin to enact conservative changes upon entering office, including overhauling the Justice Department and the FBI, as well as tackling issues like abortion and immigration.

 

"I know nothing about Project 2025. I have no idea who is behind it," Trump wrote. "I disagree with some of the things they’re saying and some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal. Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them."

 

Trump's campaign took aim at the attempts to tie him to Project 2025 on Thursday, telling Fox News Digital, "Agenda 47 and President Trump’s RNC Platform are the only policies endorsed by President Trump for a second term.

 

"Team Biden and the DNC are LYING and fear-mongering because they have NOTHING else to offer the American people. Remember this is the same group that lied to Americans and hid Joe Biden’s cognitive decline all these years."

CMSSF attends ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ premiere

Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivegna attended an early premiere of Sony Pictures’ “Fly Me to the Moon” at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., July 10.

During the event, Bentivegna participated in a panel on stage with the film’s director, Greg Berlanti, among others, discussing the making of the movie and the inspiration drawn from the real-life Apollo 11 moon landing story.

Production of the film was supported by both Space Force Guardians and NASA since many of the movie’s sets were filmed on what are now Space Force installations.

“The passion that was captured and what was going on in the nation as we were trying to get men to the moon — we have thousands of Guardians that have that same passion for space every day,” Bentivegna said.

 

Bentivegna touched on parallels from the focus of the movie’s plot, the Apollo 11 moon mission in 1969, to current efforts by NASA to send astronauts back to the moon and test human deep space exploration capabilities.

He also spoke about how space exploration can serve to inspire future generations, just as the Apollo program did five decades before, stating, “Space is a lot closer than you think.”

“Not only is space in our daily lives, but it’s only 62 miles away — that’s where the space domain begins,” Bentivegna said. “It's exciting to see people engaging in conversations about space and the vital role of Guardians in making it all possible.”
