Black Lives Matter (BLM) urged the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to organize a nationwide virtual primary on Tuesday after Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly secured enough delegates for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Harris claimed early Tuesday morning that she had obtained enough support from DNC delegates to be voted the party’s presidential nominee, following President Joe Biden stepping down from the race and endorsing Harris. BLM, which exploded in prominence following the death of George Floyd in 2020, said in a statement that while President Joe Biden wasn’t their top choice as a candidate, they cannot overlook the concerning actions taken by the Democratic Party in not holding a new primary election after the president dropped out of the race.

“We call for the Rules Committee to create a process that allows for public participation in the nomination process, not just a nomination by party delegates,” BLM’s statement reads. “The current political landscape is unprecedented, with President Biden stepping aside in a manner never seen before. This moment calls for decisive action to protect the integrity of our democracy and the voices of Black voters.”

Harris stated on Sunday her intention to “earn and secure” the Democratic presidential nomination following Biden’s announcement that he will not seek re-election as the party’s nominee.

“Now, Democratic Party elites and billionaire donors are attempting to manipulate Black voters by anointing Kamala Harris and an unknown vice president as the new Democratic ticket without a primary vote by the public,” BLM continued. “This blatant disregard for democratic principles is unacceptable. While the potential outcome of a Harris presidency may be historic, the process to achieve it must align with true democratic values. We have no idea where Kamala Harris stands on the issues, now that she has assumed Joe Biden’s place, and we have no idea of the record of her potential vice president because we don’t even know who it is yet.”

In a Sunday letter from Biden following his dropout announcement, the president explained that “it is in the interests of my party and the nation for me to step aside and concentrate fully on fulfilling my responsibilities as President.” Biden faced numerous calls from prominent Democrats, including many in Congress, to drop out of the race prior to his decision.

“This is not an attack on Kamala Harris or Black women, and right now we aren’t questioning Kamala’s qualifications or capabilities,” Shalomyah Browers, a BLM leader, said in the statement. “This is about the nominating process.”

BLM did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Objectives. To estimate state-level excess death rates during 2020 to 2023 and examine differences by region and partisan orientation.

Methods. We modeled death and population counts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to estimate excess death rates for the United States, 9 census divisions, and 50 states. We compared excess death rates for states with different partisan orientations, measured by the party of the seated governor and the level of partisan representation in state legislatures.

Results. The United States experienced 1 277 697 excess deaths between March 2020 and July 2023. Almost 90% of these deaths were attributed to COVID-19, and 51.5% occurred after vaccines were available. The highest excess death rates first occurred in the Northeast and then shifted to the South and Mountain states. Between weeks ending June 20, 2020, through March 19, 2022, excess death rates were higher in states with Republican governors and greater Republican representation in state legislatures.

Conclusions. Excess death rates during the COVID-19 pandemic varied considerably across the US states and were associated with partisan representation in state government, although the influence of confounding variables cannot be excluded. Iowa GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley on Tuesday released bodycam footage from local law enforcement officers that showed the police and Secret Service response to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Trump was injured in a shooting last week at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Two attendees were also injured, and one was killed. The gunman was also killed by a Secret Service sniper.

Grassley's office said the surveillance footage confirms that local law enforcement officers saw the shooter before he was on the roof where he fired the shots, that police shared pictures of the shooter with the Secret Service, and that law enforcement officials lost sight of the shooter before the shooting.

“For the past 10 days, questions have only been building regarding the catastrophic security failure that occurred on July 13. Federal agencies, particularly the Secret Service, have failed to be transparent with the American people," the senator said in a statement shared with Just The News. "This assassination attempt is a matter of substantial public interest, and the public’s business ought to be public.
