Russian President Vladimir Putin has broken his silence on the 2020 Presidential Election between President Trump and Joe Biden. In a recent interview, Putin stated the President Trump had his victory “stolen” from him and that “perhaps the crisis in Ukraine that arose in 2022 wouldn’t have happened” if he had been re-elected.

 

The Russian leader also called out the previous “United States administration,” presumably Joe Biden, for refusing to “communicate” with Russia, stating that he had “business-like and pragmatic” relationship with the Trump administration before.

Justice40 Initiative

U.S. Department of Commerce

The Justice40 Initiative was established by President Biden in Executive Order 14008 on Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad. Justice40 establishes a federal government-wide goal that 40 percent of the overall benefits of certain Federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized, underserved, and overburdened by pollution.

 

Last year, formal guidance, M-21-28, Interim Implementation Guidance for the Justice40 Initiative, was issued. The M-21-28 guidance memo provided further direction to federal agencies on the Initiative while also identifying 21 pilot programs. More recent guidance, M-23-09, requires programs to use the new Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool (CEJST) to identify these disadvantaged communities.

 

What is a covered J40 program?

 

A “covered program” is a Federal Government program that falls in the scope of the Justice40 initiative because it includes investments that can benefit disadvantaged communities across one or more of the following seven areas:

 

Climate change

Clean energy and energy efficiency

Clean transit

Affordable and sustainable housing

Training and workforce development

Remediation and reduction of legacy pollution

Development of critical clean water and wastewater infrastructure

 

Existing and new programs created by the Inflation Reduction Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the American Rescue Plan that make investments in any of these categories can also be considered covered under President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative. As such, we expect the Department of Commerce’s covered programs list to evolve over time as new federal programs are created or existing federal programs sunset.

A sexting problem in the GOP could have kept Republicans from interrogating a key political target.

 

The Washington Post reports that Republicans avoided subpoenaing Mark Meadows' former Chief of Staff Cassidy Hutchinson last year to avoid the embarrassing fallout of her testimony. An aide to House Speaker Mike Johnson worried Hutchinson could bring up sexually explicit texts from GOP representatives.

 

As part of a GOP-launched probe into the bipartisan committee to investigate Jan. 6, Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., floated issuing a subpoena for the former White House aide’s testimony. According to correspondence reviewed by the Post and an anonymous source with knowledge of the event, a Johnson aide warned Loudermilk that a subpoena risked exposing “sexual texts from members who were trying to engage in sexual favors.” In an email, another Johnson staffer reportedly told Loudermilk’s office that Hutchinson could “potentially reveal embarrassing information.”

 

The subpoena plan was part of a broader GOP effort to poke holes in the work of the previous Jan 6 Committee, including Hutchinson’s testimony that Donald Trump ignored warnings about potential violence.

 

Johnson denied that he spoke out against bringing Hutchinson to testify.

 

“I had nothing to do with that, the decision not to issue a subpoena to Cassidy Hutchinson was made by the chairman of that committee, and that’s Barry Loudermilk,” Johnson said on Thursday, following the Post's report. The speaker claimed that Hutchinson had already agreed to cooperate with the committee, and thus a subpoena wasn’t needed.

 

On Wednesday, Johnson carried on Loudermilk’s effort to relitigate Jan. 6 and the subsequent investigation, empaneling a subcommittee to probe the work of the original committee.

 

“House Republicans are proud of our work so far in exposing the false narratives peddled by the politically motivated January 6 Select Committee during the 117th Congress, but there is still more work to be done,” Johnson said in a statement.

Trump fires 17 independent inspectors general at federal agencies, source says

 

(Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump fired 17 independent watchdogs at multiple government agencies on Friday, a person with knowledge of the matter said, eliminating a critical oversight component and clearing the way to replace them with loyalists.

 

The inspectors general at agencies including the departments of state, defense and transportation were notified by emails from the White House personnel director that they had been terminated immediately, the source said on condition of anonymity.

 

The dismissals appeared to violate federal law, which requires the president to give both houses of Congress reasons for the dismissals 30 days in advance.

 

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

 

An inspector general is an independent position that conducts audits and investigations into allegations of waste, fraud and abuse of power.

 

Agencies are pressing ahead with orders from Trump, who returned to the presidency on Monday, to reshape the federal bureaucracy by scrapping diversity programs, rescinding job offers and sidelining more than 150 national security and foreign policy officials.

 

Friday's dismissals spared the Department of Justice inspector general, Michael Horowitz, according to the New York Times. The Washington Post, which was first to report the dismissals, said most were appointees from Trump's 2017-2021 first term.

 

Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, called Trump's action a "purge of independent watchdogs in the middle of the night," posting on X: "President Trump is dismantling checks on his power and paving the way for widespread corruption."

 

Former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell, an ally of the president, defended the decision on X, saying "existing IGs are virtually worthless."

 

"They may bring a few minor things to light but accomplish next to nothing," she wrote. "The whole system needs to be revamped! They are toothless and protect the institution instead of the citizens."

 

Many politically appointed leaders of agencies and departments come and go with each administration, but an inspector general can serve under multiple presidents.

 

During his first term, Trump fired five inspectors general in less than two months in 2020. This included the State Department, whose inspector general had played a role in the president's impeachment proceedings.

 

Last year, Trump's predecessor Joe Biden fired the inspector general of the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board, after an investigation found the official had created a hostile work environment.

Orlando Man Arrested For Transportation Of Child Sex Abuse Material

 

Orlando, Florida – United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announces the arrest and filing of a criminal complaint charging Matthew A. Inman (39, Orlando) with transportation of child sex abuse material. If convicted, Inman faces a minimum penalty of 5 years, up to 20 years, in federal prison.

 

According to the complaint, between August and October of 2024, Inman received and saved several videos of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) to his phone. These videos depicted adults sexually assaulting young children. In October 2024, Inman traveled to Las Vegas and began talking online with an undercover law enforcement officer posing as the father of a 9-year-old boy. During this conversation, Inman expressed interest in meeting and sexually assaulting the purported child. He also sent CSAM videos to the undercover officer.

 

The FBI obtained a search warrant for Inman’s electronic devices and residence. During the execution of the search warrant, Inman attempted to delete the evidence from his phone and hide in the attic of his house.

 

A criminal complaint is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.

 

This case was investigated by the FBI. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Richard Varadan.

Petro served as the first female deputy director of NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida, leading in the transition of the centre into a multi-user spaceport.

She also served an appointment at NASA's headquarters in Washington, D.C. as the deputy associate administrator and acting director for the Office of Evaluation for a year.

 

Petro became the 11th director at John F. Kennedy Space Center. Her profile included managing the Kennedy team of civil service and contractor employees, "determining and implementing centre policy, and managing and executing Kennedy missions and agency programme responsibilities," NASA said in a recent statement.

Janet Petro has earned many laurels like the Presidential Rank Award, the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Sammies Management Excellence Medal, and the Silver Snoopy Award. In 2018, she was selected by the Florida Governor to be inducted into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame.

Spacesuit Work and Life Science Wrap Up Week Aboard Station

The week ended aboard the International Space Station with spacesuit maintenance and research into how microgravity affects blood pressure and breathing.

The Expedition 72 residents also serviced a variety of hardware supporting science experiments and life support systems aboard the orbital outpost.

 

Two NASA astronauts, Commander Suni Williams and Flight Engineer Butch Wilmore, continued gearing up for a spacewalk scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. EST on Thursday, Jan. 30.

Williams worked throughout Friday in the Quest airlock completing the charging of lithium-ion batteries that power spacesuits for the duration of a spacewalk.

Next, she filtered and cleaned the water loops that cool astronauts in their spacesuits in the extreme environment of outer space.

 

Wilmore pitched in and verified the functionality of spacesuit components including glove heaters, cameras, and helmet lights.

The duo is preparing for a six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk next week to remove radio antenna hardware and search for microbes outside the orbital outpost.

 

NASA Flight Engineer Nick Hague began his day inside the Columbus laboratory module installing experiment containers on the BioLab, a biology research device that enables observations of microbes, cells, tissues, and more in weightlessness.

NASA Flight Engineer Don Pettit activated life support gear in the Unity module and removed more life support hardware from the Tranquility module.

The pair later met at the end of the day and reviewed procedures they will use in the future to service the external thermal control system that cools hardware on the outside of the orbital lab.

 

Roscosmos Flight Engineers Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner started their day on human research.

This time, Ovchinin wore sensors that measured his exhalation following a deep breath helping doctors understand how microgravity affects the respiratory system.

Vagner wore a separate set of sensors for a study observing how a crew member’s vascular system functions during a long-term space mission.

Cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov spent the first part of his day on orbital plumbing tasks in the Nauka science module then wrapped up his shift auditing stowage space throughout the station’s Roscosmos segment.

NASA wants to launch rockets into northern lights to study 'black auroras'

January 25, 2025

 

NASA plans to fly two rockets through active auroras to help study the unique ribbons of light that dance across the Alaskan night sky.

 

The rockets are expected to lift off from the Poker Flat Research Range in Fairbanks, Alaska, as part of two missions led by space physicists Marilia Samara and Robert Michell from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

The team aims to better understand why some auroras flicker, others pulsate and others appear to have holes.

 

The launch window for the missions opened on Jan. 21; however, studying the eccentric light shows requires precise timing.

That's why the team will use ground-based cameras at the launch site and at an observatory located about 130 miles (209 kilometers) northeast of the rockets' trajectory in Venetie, Alaska, to determine the most opportune time for launch based on auroral activity.

 

Aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, are created when charged particles from the sun collide atoms in Earth's upper atmosphere, releasing energy as light.

While scientists have a general understanding of auroras and their activity, each instance of the phenomenon exhibits unique movements and behaviors.

Understanding different aurora behaviors could lend new insights about the space weather environment around our planet, NASA said in a statement.

 

To help to that end, the rockets NASA wants to launch into the auroras are equipped with instruments to study the interaction between electrons and Earth's magnetic field.

Each rocket will target a different type of aurora, and the data collected will hopefully help researchers better understand what initially set in motion the electrons that create them.

 

The first mission — called GIRAFF (Ground Imaging to Rocket investigation of Auroral Fast Features) — aims to compare fast-pulsating auroras, which flash on and off a few times a second, and flickering auroras, which do so up to 15 times a second.

GIRAFF, led by Michell, will use the rockets to measure the energy, quantity and relative arrival times of the electrons in both types of auroras to determine the different acceleration processes by which each aurora forms, according to the statement.

 

The second mission — called Black and Diffuse Aurora Science Surveyor — is led by Samara and will study so-called "black auroras," which appear to have holes or patches of missing light.

The rocket flying through this type of aurora will search for outgoing electrons that may have reversed direction, resulting in the dark void spots across the otherwise fluid, colorful bands of light.

 

Not only does the team have to time each launch just right, but they also have to aim the rockets on the right trajectory.

It takes about five minutes for the rockets to reach the altitude needed to study the Northern Lights, so the team has to best assess where the auroras will travel over that period of time from when they are first detected using the ground-based cameras.

"You do the best you can, but there's a certain mix of intuition and determination you need," Samara said in the statement.

Just How Much Water Are Silicon Valley Data Centers Guzzling?

CBS SF) – As the California drought lingers on and the threat of rising water rates becomes reality, Silicon Valley companies are looking for alternative methods to keep its computer farms cool.

 

The machines that hold everything from Facebook photos to viral YouTube videos, ATM transactions and medical records require large amounts of water to keep the servers from overheating.

 

Agriculture in California accounts for 80 percent of water consumption, making it easier for data centers to pass under the radar of California's tightening water restrictions. And since water use isn't factored into the power usage effective standard to gauge the efficiency of computer facilities, water conservation efforts are often less prioritized. Plus, water is often cheaper than using electricity for more traditional air conditioned cooling methods.

 

But with California home to more 800 data centers, the most of any state, it's a considerable amount of water for an increasingly thirsty state.

 

The state's data centers alone guzzle about as much 158,000 Olympic sized swimming pools in one year.

 

On average water-cooled server farms use about 3.5 million gallons per megawatts (MW) each year, according Green Grid board member Jack Pouchet. Decent-size data centers can range in scale from 5MW to 30MW.

 

A midsize data center (15 MW) alone uses as much as 100 acres of almond trees, or three average hospitals, according to the Wall Street Journal – and that's just for computer chips.

 

Some companies worried about the water crisis and potentially rising costs are shifting to less water-intensive cooling methods.

 

Vantage Data Center in Santa Clara, for example, is using an alternative cooling method. While two of the company's centers are cooled by a conventional system that sends cold water through the server room, the third pulls cool air in from outside when the conditions are right.

 

Then Santa Clara-based Digital Realty recently launched an internal water conservation challenge by working with local water utilities to determine where and how it can use recycled rather than drinkable water in its cooling systems.

 

Google is trying a similar approach by harvesting water from rain, canals and other non-potable sources.

 

The search engine giant, Facebook and some other companies are also relocating some of its data centers altogether to climates where facilities can be cooled by the outside air year-round such as Sweden and Finland.

 

Looking ahead, Pouchet said it's time for California with its plethora of renewable energy to consider building the all-electric data center that does not use any water for cooling. "

 

Perhaps we should stop worrying about electricity consumption when we can drive water use to zero," Pouchet said. "We have the technology available today. With proper tax credits and utility incentives we can retro-fit existing facilities to significantly reduce or eliminate water consumption. "
