Pope Francis declined to see Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is demanding a harder Vatican line on China. The Holy See said meeting just before a U.S. election would be inappropriate.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

I have a question that I can only ask here, anonymously….

 

Is jacking off (sometimes to porn) really THAT bad? I only do it once a week, sometimes once every 2 or 3 weeks, and I usually get it over with in about 10 mins. Does this make me a bad person? Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lt. General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry on Wednesday said that India targeted the Noseri Dam near the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project, causing damage to critical infrastructure and endangering thousands of civilians, state-run news agency APP reported. 

 

“Targeting water reservoirs is not only illegal under international laws but also poses a humanitarian risk,” Lt Gen Sharif questioned India’s motives, specifically targeting a vital water resource of Pakistan. 

“Does international and war law permit targeting the water reserves of a country?” he asked during a media briefing.

 

The attack, which took place during the night between May 6 and 7, was condemned by Pakistan as an “unprovoked” act of aggression. In retaliation, the Pakistan Air Force responded swiftly, shooting down five Indian fighter jets, including three Rafale jets and one MiG-29 aircraft, in areas such as Bathinda, Jammu, and Srinagar. 

The Pakistani military also launched counterattacks on Indian positions, destroying key military infrastructure and forcing Indian soldiers to retreat in certain sectors.

The attack on a dam near to the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project has heightened concerns over the security of critical infrastructure in the region, with Pakistan reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding such assets against any further aggression.

 

Last month, India announced its decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty, signed in 1960, following a militant attack on tourists in the Pahalgam area of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOK) on April 22, 2025. The attack, which claimed the lives of at least 28 tourists, has further escalated tensions in the region.

After suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, India also started work on flushing silt at two of its dams in the held-Kashmir valley, Reuters reported on Monday.

India also stopped the flow of water across the border through the Chenab river. Since Sunday morning, the water flow has been throttled by almost 90% of the usual volume that passes to Pakistan, according to Muhammad Khalid Idrees Rana, spokesman for Pakistan’s Indus River System Authority. 

 

“It’s unprecedented,” Rana said, adding that India typically holds some water daily for electricity generation but releases it every few hours.

Rana also said the water could be released later as India doesn’t have capacity to store it permanently

Jay Clayton, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced today that ALEXANDER MASHINSKY, the founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Celsius Network LLC and their affiliated entities (collectively, “Celsius”), was sentenced to 12 years for committing commodities fraud and securities fraud at Celsius. MASHINSKY previously pled guilty on December 3, 2024, before U.S. District Judge John G. Koeltl, who imposed today’s sentence.

 

U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said: “Alexander Mashinsky targeted retail investors with promises that he would keep their “digital assets” safer than a bank, when in fact he used those assets to place risky bets and to line his own pockets. In the end, Mashinsky made tens of millions of dollars while his customers lost billions. America’s investors deserve better. The case for tokenization and the use of digital assets is strong but it is not a license to deceive. The rules against fraud still apply, and the SDNY will hold those who flout them accountable for their crimes.”

 

According to the allegations contained in the Indictment and statements made in public filings and in public court proceedings:

 

Celsius, a crypto asset platform, offered customers “rewards” on deposited assets, secured loans, and custody services. Marketing itself as the “safest place for your crypto,” Celsius encouraged customers to “unbank” themselves by transferring crypto assets to its platform. Celsius’s primary offering, “Earn” program, promised to deploy customer assets to generate investment returns. Celsius also provided “Custody” and “Borrow” programs, the latter allowing customers to obtain loans by posting crypto assets as collateral. MASHINSKY, as CEO, directly marketed Celsius to retail customers globally. Throughout his tenure, he repeatedly misrepresented key aspects of Celsius’s business and finances to attract customers and retain their assets. His false claims covered the safety of Celsius’s yield-generating activities, its profitability, the sustainability of high rewards rates, and the risks associated with depositing crypto assets on the platform. As MASHINSKY portrayed Celsius as secure, the platform grew exponentially. By the fall of 2021, Celsius had become one of the largest crypto platforms in the world, holding approximately $25 billion in assets at its peak.

Six Individuals Indicted on Charges of Criminal Conspiracy Involving Illegal Drugs and Firearms

 

Yakima, Washington – The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington announced today that six people are in federal custody following the return of an indictment alleging 20 criminal counts involving drug trafficking and firearms.

 

On April 22, 2025, the Drug Enforcement Administration; Federal Bureau of Investigation; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Homeland Security Investigations, and the Moses Lake Police Department executed a number of federal search warrants at several locations, seizing nine firearms. The guns were seized as part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation into a drug trafficking network operating in Eastern Washington.

 

According to unsealed charging documents, the following individuals have been charged in connection to the investigation. In addition, the names of others indicted in connection with this investigation will be unsealed upon the arrest of those individuals.

The individuals were arraigned at the Yakima Federal Courthouse on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

 

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Actor Michael Pitt charged with sex abuse, assault of ex-girlfriend in New York

 

Actor Michael Pitt, known for his TV roles on Boardwalk Empire and Dawson's Creek, is accused of sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend, choking her, and attacking her with a cinder block and a piece of lumber at his New York City home, according to a grand jury indictment.

 

Pitt, 44, whose lawyers denied the allegations, was arrested on Friday on nine counts, including first-degree sexual abuse, criminal sexual acts, assault, attempted assault and strangulation.

 

The indictment cites four incidents between April 2020 and August 2021 at Pitt's home in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn.

 

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez's office declined to comment on Wednesday (Thursday AEST) beyond the allegations listed in the indictment.

 

Pitt's lawyer, Jason Goldman, said he already had exonerating evidence and expected the case to be dismissed.

 

"Unfortunately, we live in a world where somebody like Mr. Pitt — an accomplished professional who would never so much as contemplate these crimes — can be arrested on the uncorroborated word of an unreliable individual," Goldman said in a text message to The Associated Press.

 

He added, "In reality, this baseless claim is suspiciously raised some four or five years after the alleged incident, from a time when the two parties were in a completely consensual relationship."

'South Korean researchers combined three strains of the bird flu to create a new mutant version of the virus.

 

The researchers boast that the newly engineered mutant has increased viral stability, altered host targeting, and enhanced human cell entry.

 

The new virus can spread rapidly through human populations due to the potential for aerosol transmission, the scientists reveal.

 

The study’s paper was published this week in the Virology Journal. The paper reveals that scientists constructed a chimeric virus with altered heat resistance, receptor binding, and cell entry capabilities.

 

They were able to engineer this new virus by combining gene segments from three distinct influenza viruses.

They then applied directed mutations to increase replication and stability.

 

Highly pathogenic bird flu viruses require BSL-3 containment due to their potential for aerosol transmission and serious health risks.

 

The experiments come as President Donald Trump’s administration has announced a fresh crackdown on “dangerous gain-of-function research.”

 

The timing raises alarm over the use of high-risk virological techniques to create brand new, pandemic-level viruses under the guise of vaccine development.

 

Researchers introduced specific mutations to enhance the thermal resilience of the virus. These modifications mean the mutant virus can survive longer under higher temperatures.

 

“We identified a key mutation (R90K) that increases heat stability while preserving antigenicity,” the researchers wrote in the study’s paper.

 

“Combining the R90K and H110Y mutations (22W_KY) resulted in a synergistic increase in thermal stability and maintained HA activity without measurable reduction even after 4 h at 52 °C.”

 

These alterations directly transform the physical durability of the virus. It allows the virus to persist in conditions that would otherwise degrade its infectivity.

 

Thermal stabilization is a functional enhancement, meeting the definition of gain-of-function. The authors further engineered viral replication traits by modifying the PB2 gene to boost replication in chicken eggs. This method also impacted replication in other mammals aside from humans.

 

“The PB2 gene of PR8 was replaced with a prototypical avian PB2 gene to increase replication efficiency in embryonated chicken eggs and reduce replication efficiency in mammalian cells,” the scientists wrote.

 

This deliberate alteration of replication in non-natural hosts like eggs is a textbook example of gain-of-function manipulation.

 

The scientists rebuilt influenza viruses from scratch, using the pHW2000 plasmid-based system. “Recombinant viruses were generated using a pHW2000 plasmid-based reverse genetics system,” they note.

 

Reverse genetics systems are commonly used in gain-of-function research to design viruses with novel traits not found in nature. The study confirms altered receptor interactions in the modified virus. This is a critical determinant of which species or tissues the virus can infect.

 

“The N193D mutation led to a reduction of the affinity of the 22W_MVV virus for 2,3-SA,” the researchers explain.

 

Although the change reduced binding in this case, modifying receptor preference alters the host-virus interface, meaning it is still classed as gain-of-function by definition.

 

“22 W HA and 22 W NA genes, along with six internal genomic segments (PB2, PB1, PA, NP, M, NS) from PR8 and a PB2 gene from 01310 containing the I66M, I109V, and I133V (MVV) mutations,” they note.

 

This means the final virus included:

 

Hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) from clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1Internal genes from A/Puerto Rico/8/1934 (PR8)PB2 gene from A/Chicken/01310/Korea/2001 with MVV mutations

 

Such multi-strain reassortment is inherently risky. This type of mutation falls under the highest classifications of gain-of-function due to the unpredictability of the resulting virus.

 

The virus was also engineered to spread more effectively and rapidly through human populations. It manipulates the immune response and quickly enters human cells after being inhaled.

 

“BEI-inactivated 22W_KY also elicited significantly stronger systemic IgG, mucosal IgA, and T-cell responses, especially in the lungs,” they explain.

 

“The highest level of intracellular entry was observed for BEI_22W_KY, confirming its superior effectiveness in penetrating cells.”

 

These enhancements suggest the modified virus is more effective at invading host cells.

 

This study was published without mentioning gain-of-function oversight or biosecurity risk assessment. Should this engineered virus escape containment accidentally or intentionally, it could ignite a global pandemic.

 

Ironically, it would create the disaster that the experiments were allegedly set up to prevent.'

“Routers dating from 2010 or earlier likely no longer receive software updates issued by the manufacturer and could be compromised by cyber actors exploiting known vulnerabilities.”

“The bureau noted that some older routers were breached by hackers using TheMoon malware and that recently some end-of-life routers “were identified as compromised by a new variant of TheMoon malware,” allowing the “cyber actors to install proxies on unsuspecting victim routers and conduct cyber crimes anonymously.”
