With cameras rolling, tension over potential US military intervention against Mexico's drug cartels erupted into a shoving-and-slapping bout between legislators at the podium of the Senate chambers on Wednesday.

 

Senator Alejandro “Alito” Moreno, who leads the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), was apparently incensed over the refusal of his demands to participate in the floor debate, which featured accusations that PRI and the National Action Party (PAN) had called for the US military to strike the cartels inside Mexico – which both parties deny.

Today, @Sec_Noem announced the termination of two dozen members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s IT department after it was discovered that they brazenly neglected basic security protocols.

FEMA’s career IT leadership failed on every level. Their incompetence put the American people at risk.

 

When DHS stepped in to fix the problem, entrenched bureaucrats worked to prevent us from solving the problem and downplayed just how bad this breach was. These deep-state individuals were more interested in covering up their failures than in protecting the Homeland and American citizens’ personal data, so I terminated them immediately.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has a lot to answer for, and, no doubt, the current leadership has its work cut out, depoliticizing the country’s supposedly premier law enforcement agency. The latest skeleton to fall out of the closet concerns how the Bureau has been vastly undercounting the number of cases of defensive gun use by armed Americans. The only reason for deliberately doing such a thing would have been orders coming down from Justice Department top brass – or from the White House – to hide the many, many times each year across America that privately owned guns have been used to save lives.

If your agenda is to turn public opinion against gun ownership and spread the fear of gun violence, the last thing you want is people knowing guns can be, and often are, used to deter or prevent crime.

On Aug. 22, the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) published a shocking study detailing “massive errors” in FBI Active Shooting Reports from 2014 to 2024. Considering the volume of evidence of the Bureau acting in accordance with a politically partisan agenda over the course of these very same years, it is not unreasonable to suspect that discrepancies in the FBI data were not innocent errors.

On the other hand, it is perhaps possible for the FBI to claim the wildly inaccurate numbers are those provided by police and sheriff departments and state police around the country. Maybe the errors – or perhaps the deliberate under-reporting – were local issues.

One could speculate that law enforcement departments in Democratic jurisdictions may themselves have decided to disregard known instances of defensive gun use. Democrats, after all, are fond of claiming it is almost unheard of for an armed civilian to save lives. The left-wing media, using FBI data, frequently make the same assertion.

In summary, between 2014 and 2024, the FBI recorded 374 active shootings and 14 cases of defensive gun use. The CPRC counted 561 active shootings and 202 instances of armed civilian intervention.

The FBI defines an active shooting – not to be confused with a mass shooting – as incidents in which an individual actively kills or attempts to kill people in a populated public area.

Not included are shootings related to gang violence or other criminal activity. So, an active shooting is one whose sole purpose is the shooting – and there need not be any casualties. Any attempt to shoot people in a public area – regardless of outcome – is an active shooting. CPRC used the same definition but even excluded 31 cases in which armed civilians intervened and suspects did not fire their weapons.

Over the whole time period, then – according to the FBI – defensive gun use by civilians occurred in just 3.7% of all active shootings. CPRC puts it at 36%. A massive difference. The Bureau reports say there was not a single incidence of defensive gun use during active shootings in 2019, 2020, 2023, and 2024. By contrast, CPRC found that armed civilians confronted active shooters in almost 30% of cases in 2019, in nearly 38% of 2020 active shootings, in more than 30% of 2023 incidents, and, in 2024, defensive gun use was a factor in 47.8% of active shootings.

CPRC came up with its own numbers by compiling local media reports of defensive gun use incidents. The FBI relies on reports from state and local law enforcement agencies, which are a matter of discretion rather than being mandatory.

Spirit Airlines files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in a year

 

Spirit Airlines on Friday filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time in a year, just months after the country’s largest budget carrier failed find to sturdy financial footing when it came out of Chapter 11 protection in March.

 

Spirit debtholders agreed in the airline’s previous bankruptcy to exchange $795 million in debt for equity, but the carrier avoided bigger changes to cut costs, like getting rid of planes or more dramatically shrinking its footprint.

 

Spirit now says it will reduce its network and shrink its fleet, cuts that it said will reduce costs by “hundreds of millions of dollars” a year.

 

“Since emerging from our previous restructuring, which was targeted exclusively on reducing Spirit’s funded debt and raising equity capital, it has become clear that there is much more work to be done and many more tools are available to best position Spirit for the future,” Spirit CEO Dave Davis said in a news release on Friday.

Judge orders remote appearances for Israeli official in child luring case

An Israeli official accused of trying to lure a child for sex while on a visit to Nevada missed his arraignment in Henderson on Wednesday, prompting a judge to require future appearances by video.

 

Tom Artiom Alexandrovich,

who returned home immediately after posting $10,000 bail, was scheduled to appear before a judge to hear the formal charge, his rights, and release recommendations. Instead, his attorney, David Chesnoff, appeared on his behalf and told Justice of the Peace Barbara Schifalacqua that prosecutors had agreed to waive Alexandrovich’s attendance.

 

“The state and I had an agreement, and we informed your staff that he would not be here. I did not know the protocol that the court has,” Chesnoff said. “I’m in constant contact with [Alexandrovich]. I can show you my phone. Just this morning, I instructed him that he didn’t have to be here, because normally, that’s the practice that we’ve employed for the 45 years I’ve been doing this.”

 

The judge noted that the district attorney’s office does not have the authority to waive felony arraignment appearances. Schifalacqua said that because Alexandrovich is out on bail, he is required by Nevada State law to make every court appearance.

 

“Your oral request without anything before the court, to waive his appearance here today, is hereby denied,” Schifalacqua stated. She later granted his request to allow Alexandrovich to participate by Zoom.

 

Alexandrovich’s rapid release and departure from the U.S. have sparked controversy. Online critics accused the government of intervening on behalf of the state of Israel, which the U.S. State Department denied. Meanwhile, Nevada acting U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah, in an X post, blamed the Clark County district attorney’s office and state judges for not requiring Alexandrovich to surrender his passport.

 

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson has denied allegations that the defendant received special treatment, describing Alexandrovich’s bail as “standard” or pre-set by the court. Under the standard bail procedure, an arrestee can post bond straight away and be released without conditions, Wolfson explained.

 

Chesnoff echoed similar sentiments. He previously told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that his client was “treated just as anybody would be who got arrested.”

 

The Wednesday hearing was continued a week, when Schifalacqua said she could reset Alexandrovich’s release conditions.

 

The judge noted that, at a minimum, she would like Alexandrovich to have no contact with minors and to refrain from using dating or “meet-up” websites. She mentioned electronic monitoring but admitted she was uncertain about that measure.

 

Chesnoff also stated during the hearing that he planned to present his own recommendations to the court, “in light of Alexandrovich’s individualized circumstances.”

 

In a statement issued after court, Chesnoff wrote, “Mr. Alexandrovich will appear by Zoom as permitted by the court at his next appearance. He intends to pursue all his lawful rights and to vigorously defend this case in court and not in the media.”

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

Jimmy Dore showed a clip from an Israeli media outlet that shows soldiers saying the strike was approved by top brass to target the journalists and the medical workers today at the hospital. The strike was coordinated with senior command and they knew before it was carried out. Israel placed cameras in the area and knew who was there. The broadcast described the hospital as a “terror headquarters,” framing medical workers and journalists as operatives despite clear evidence of civilian targeting.

Trump cancels $679 million in federal funding for offshore wind projects

 

WASHINGTON, Aug 29 (Reuters) - The Trump administration said on Friday it was cancelling $679 million in federal funding for 12 offshore wind projects, including $427 million for a California project.

The move is the latest in a full-throated effort by the administration to undermine an industry that was central to former President Joe Biden's climate and energy agendas.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the awards, made under the Biden administration, were a waste of funds "that could otherwise go towards revitalizing America's maritime industry."

Last year, the department awarded $427 million to construct a new marine terminal to support construction and maintenance of offshore wind turbines in Humboldt County, California.

The Humboldt Bay project was intended to be the first offshore wind terminal on the Pacific coast. The funds were aimed at revitalizing a defunct marine terminal to be used for wind turbine assembly, launch and project staging.

A spokesperson for California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the action as an example of the Trump administration "assaulting clean energy and infrastructure projects – hurting business and killing jobs in rural areas, and ceding our economic future to China."

The department is also cutting a $47 million grant for an offshore wind logistics and manufacturing hub near the Port of Baltimore in Maryland and $48 million for an offshore wind terminal project in New York's Staten Island awarded in 2022, along with $33 million for a port project in Salem, Massachusetts, to redevelop a vacant industrial facility for offshore wind projects.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey said cancelling the Salem grant will cost 800 construction workers their jobs. "The real waste here is the Trump administration canceling tens of millions of dollars for a project that is already under way to increase our energy supply," she said.

U.S. agencies, including the departments of defense, energy and commerce, said they are reviewing offshore wind farms approved by the Biden administration along the Atlantic coast after two recent major cancellations.

The transportation department has also canceled major grants for California high-speed rail and other environmental infrastructure projects.
