Spain: A network of drug-trafficking between Morocco and Spain by drone has been dismantled

Spanish police said today that a network of traffickers is using improvised drones, capable of travelling more than 200 kilometres, to transport cannabis from Morocco to Spain.

The drones were taking off from southern Spain to pick up the drugs in Morocco and, on their return, carried the cargo to the communities of Vejer de la Frontera and Tarifa, in southern Andalusia, according to a press release from the Spanish militia.

The packages bore fluorescent markings and radio frequency geolocation devices to facilitate their overnight retrieval, authorities explained.

The gang was building the drones, which had a range of more than 200 kilometers, using components sourced from Asian companies.

“The group was capable of developing improvised devices of great autonomy, precision and loading capacity, far superior to conventional commercial models,” the Spanish police press release said.

The network operated almost every night, launching up to 10 drones at a time, which allowed it to transport around 200 kilos of cannabis in total.

The operation was conducted in cooperation with Moroccan police after authorities tracked down several flights of drones of unknown origin between the two countries.

Eight operational drones and another 10 under construction were seized during searches on Monday, as well as more than 150 kilograms of cannabis and the sum of 320,000 euros. Nine people were arrested.

Drone Mapping Offers Insight into Peru’s “Band of Holes”

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA—According to a statement released by the University of Sydney, a team of researchers led by digital archaeologist Jacob Bongers has mapped the more than 5,000 aligned holes on Monte Sierpe in southern Peru’s Pisco Valley with drone technology.

They found that the arrangement of the so-called “Band of Holes” is similar to at least one Inca khipu, an accounting device made of knotted string, discovered in the same valley.

The researchers also analyzed soil from the holes and identified maize pollen and traces of reeds that were used for weaving baskets.

Bongers suggests that people of the pre-Inca Chincha Kingdom may have carried plants to the site in baskets and then placed them in the holes.

Merchants, fisherfolk, and cotton farmers may have also met here to do business, he added. “We know the pre-Hispanic population here was around 100,000 people,” Bongers said.

Later, under Inca rule, the researchers think the monument may have been used for accounting as a sort of “landscape khipu,” noting that it was situated between the highlands and coastal plain, and was near two Inca administrative sites and a network of pre-Hispanic roads.

“There are still many more questions—why is this monument only seen here and not all over the Andes?”

Poland will not put Ukraine’s interests above its own – president

Poland will not put Ukraine’s interests above its own or allow its partnership with Kiev to dictate national priorities, President Karol Nawrocki has said.

Warsaw has been one of Kiev’s main backers since the conflict with Russia escalated in 2022, providing over €5.1 billion ($5.7 billion) in aid, acting as a key hub for Western arms, and accepting roughly a million Ukrainian asylum seekers. Yet public support for Kiev has steadily waned.

Nawrocki, who took office earlier this year, previously reaffirmed general support for Ukraine but opposed its NATO and EU bids and questioned indefinite welfare aid for refugees. In September, he signed a bill tightening benefits for Ukrainians and proposed extending the residency requirement for citizenship from three to ten years.

In a Tuesday interview with wPolsce24 TV,Nawrocki said Poland had “gone too far” in supporting Kiev at the cost of its own interests. He stressed that his country “will not become a hostage” to Ukraine, emphasizing that ==Polish policy will be guided by national sovereignty and interests.

“There must be a partnership-based relationship. We are trying to find a certain symmetry between the interests of Poland and those of Ukraine,” he said. “Poland’s interests cannot be treated as a guarantee for fulfilling all Ukrainian demands while ignoring Polish public opinion.”

On November 12, 2025, the House Oversight Committee released tens of thousands of additional pages of documents obtained from the estate of Jeffrey Epstein, including new emails that mention former President Donald Trump.

In the third batch, the Oversight Committee received 8,544 documents responsive to the Committee’s subpoena from August. The following was received:

Phone Message Logs from 2002-2005, which were produced previously in litigation

Copies of flight logs and flight manifests for aircraft, including helicopters, that Mr. Epstein owned, rented, leased, operated or used from 1990-2019

Copies of ledgers reflecting transactions recorded as cash transactions for Mr. Epstein and business entities. These documents were previously shown to Committee staff at in camera review.

In a conference call organized by CAIR-linked “Muslims for Ferguson, a CAIR official called Abdullah a “Shaheed,” or martyr, and said both he and Brown were victims of a national security apparatus that had “completely gone wild” and engaged in “demonizing and criminalizing Muslims.”

“The reality is that this country, in law enforcement, be it local, state or federal law enforcement, people with guns have always seen black men and black people as threats,” Dawud Walid, executive director of CAIR’s Michigan Chapter, told the some 100 protest organizers on the call, made on the five-year anniversary of Abdullah’s death and which was monitored by CSP.

Walid claimed Brown was a Muslim, although when pressed, Walid denied he had made such a claim. Brown was buried in August after a memorial service at the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis.

Mustafa Abdullah of the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri has not only been active on the ground he has taken local police to court over the “5 second rule” and other egregious abuses of civil-liberties. Faizan Syed, director of the St. Louis Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations along with community-activist and Hafiz Abdul-Basit Syed, have also been of assistance to activists starting at an early date.

Rising Pirate Attacks off Somalia Endanger Key Trade Route

Instability in Yemen and the Horn of Africa is fueling a resurgence in maritime piracy off Somalia, a cause for concern in one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors.

At least three recorded incidents have taken place off the Horn of Africa nation this month alone, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations, a navy organization that links military forces with merchant ships, echoing the havoc that Somali pirates wreaked along the East African coast for more than a decade.

The attacks peaked at 176 in 2011 and a 2009 hijacking was the basis for the 2013 Oscar-nominated movie Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks. They only tapered off after increased international patrols by navies including the European Union Naval Force — known as EU Navfor — the use of armed guards on ships and a stronger central government in Somalia.

Instability due to the threat by the Houthis in Yemen — designated a terrorist group by the US — as well as tension among regional countries and internal disputes in some nations was “understood by the pirate networks as an opportunity to resume piracy attempts,” the EU Navfor’s Mission Atalanta, which patrols Somali waters, said in emailed response to queries.

Atalanta freed a Maltese-flagged tanker on Friday in the vicinity of Eyl, a coastal town that was a piracy haven in the late 2000s.

“Piracy was suppressed, but not eradicated,” Atalanta said.

BREAKING😑: A federal judge ordered the release of hundreds of people arrested as part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Illinois, according to CNN affiliate WLS, dealing a blow to federal efforts to detain and deport as many undocumented people as possible.

The town, of course, is most famous for the 1947 "Roswell Incident," when the debris of a crashed military balloon was recovered, fueling decades of conspiracy theories of aliens, UFOs, and a rumored crash of an extraterrestrial spacecraft.

Roswell has since leaned into its identity, with annual events such as the UFO Festival, the opening of the International UFO Museum, and other related tourist attractions.

When Colbert first brought up the topic to Moore, she said, "Something definitely happened. But when I was a kid, it was never spoken about. Never. It just was not ever ever talked about, not even in passing. It was as if it was a secret."

She added that when Hollywood came calling, with documentaries and the popular WB show, Roswell, now all of a sudden in town, "there was a museum, and now there's a somewhat comprehensive museum discussing how they shut all communication down about it."

When Colbert pressed her on what she meant when she said something definitely happened, she demurred, "I don't know. Well, you know, the largest landing strip in America is in Roswell, so there's a lot of testing that goes on."

When she didn't elaborate further, Colbert teased, "Legally, you can't say anything or they'll take you out," to which she joked back, "It's possible."

Moore then turned the tables on the late-night host, asking what his fascination with aliens is. "What is not to be fascinated about?" he replied.

"The possibility there are aliens, or a branch of the military that's been putting out these videos of unexplainable pill-shaped things that go into the water and come out and go from like 0 to 6,000 miles an hour with absolutely no g-force impact — I mean, what? I am not the one with the problem."

Moore shared with Colbert that she is taking her own alien fascination to the big screen with her upcoming film Strange Arrivals, which is based on the true story of Betty and Barney Hill's alleged alien abduction.

Colman Domingo will play Barney, and Moore will play Betty.

This is Donald Trump’s world—we’re all just living in it. The disruptor-in-chief was the biggest factor shaping global affairs in 2025, and that will be the case for as long as he remains in the White House. His norm-shattering approach has caused turmoil in some areas (as in trade) but has also delivered diplomatic results (as in Gaza) and forced necessary change (as with European defence spending). As the Trumpnado spins on in 2026, here are ten trends and themes to watch in the coming year.

America’s 250th.

Expect to hear wildly diverging accounts of America’s past, present and future, as Republicans and Democrats describe the same country in irreconcilably different terms to mark the 250th anniversary of its founding. Voters will then give their verdict on America’s future in the midterm elections in November. But even if the Democrats take the House, Mr Trump’s rule by bullying, tariffs and executive orders will go on.

Geopolitical drift.

Foreign-policy analysts are divided: is the world in a new cold war, between blocs led by America and China, or will a Trumpian deal divide the planet into American, Russian and Chinese “spheres of influence”, in which each can do as they please? Don’t count on either. Mr Trump prefers a transactional approach based on instinct, not grand geopolitical paradigms. The old global rules-based order will drift and decay further. But “coalitions of the willing” will strike new deals in areas such as defence, trade and climate.

War or peace? Yes.

With luck, the fragile peace in Gaza will hold. But conflicts will grind on in Ukraine, Sudan and Myanmar. Russia and China will test America’s commitment to its allies with “grey-zone” provocations in northern Europe and the South China Sea. As the line between war and peace becomes ever more blurred, tensions will rise in the Arctic, in orbit, on the sea floor and in cyberspace.

Problems for Europe.

All this poses a particular test for Europe. It must increase defence spending, keep America on side, boost economic growth and deal with huge deficits, even though austerity risks stoking support for hard-right parties. It also wants to remain a leading advocate for free trade and greenery. It cannot do all of these at once. A splurge on defence spending may lift growth, but only slightly.

China’s opportunity.

China has its own problems, with deflation, slowing growth and an industrial glut, but Mr Trump’s “America First” policy opens up new opportunities for China to boost its global influence. It will present itself as a more reliable partner, particularly in the global south, where it is striking a string of trade agreements. It is happy to do tactical deals with Mr Trump on soyabeans or chips. The trick will be to keep relations with America transactional, not confrontational.

With rich countries living beyond their means, the risk of a bond-market crisis is growing

Economic worries.

So far America’s economy is proving more resilient than many expected to Mr Trump’s tariffs, but they will dampen global growth. And with rich countries living beyond their means, the risk of a bond-market crisis is growing. Much will depend on the replacement of Jerome Powell as chair of the Federal Reserve in May; politicising the Fed could trigger a market showdown.

Concerns over AI.

Rampant spending on infrastructure for artificial intelligence may also be concealing economic weakness in America. Will the bubble burst? As with railways, electricity and the internet, a crash would not mean that the technology does not have real value. But it could have wide economic impact. Either way, concern about AI’s impact on jobs, particularly those of graduates, will deepen.

A mixed climate picture.

Limiting warming to 1.5°C is off the table, and Mr Trump hates renewables. But global emissions have probably peaked, clean tech is booming across the global south and firms will meet or exceed their climate targets—but will keep quiet about it to avoid Mr Trump’s ire. Geothermal energy is worth watching.

Sporting values.

Sport can always be relied upon to provide a break from politics, right? Well, maybe not in 2026. The football World Cup is being jointly hosted by America, Canada and Mexico, whose relations are strained. Fans may stay away. But the Enhanced Games, in Las Vegas, may be even more controversial: athletes can use performance-enhancing drugs. Is it cheating—or just different?

Ozempic, but better.

Better, cheaper GLP-1 weight-loss drugs are coming, and in pill form, too. That will expand access. But is taking them cheating? GLP-1s extend the debate about the ethics of performance-enhancing drugs to a far wider group than athletes or bodybuilders. Few people compete in the Olympics. But anyone can take part in the Ozempic games.

Wherever you stand on performance-enhancing drugs, I hope you will find The World Ahead 2026 to be a valuable and effective supplement to your media diet, boosting clarity and foresight. ■●

Unknown aerial objects are hovering over some of Europe’s most sensitive nuclear facilities, and authorities admit they have no idea what they are dealing with.

According to reports from multiple European defense ministries, interception technology has failed, and not a single object has been successfully captured or brought down despite weeks of attempts.

On November 9th 2025, between three and five UAPs penetrated restricted airspace over the Doel nuclear power plant in Belgium, one of the country’s largest nuclear facilities providing a significant portion of the nation’s energy needs.

According to the facility operator Engie, operations were not impacted, but the incident marked the latest in a systematic targeting of critical infrastructure across Europe that has been ongoing since mid-September.

The objects have been spotted over military bases housing nuclear weapons, major international airports, and nuclear power plants in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Poland, Norway, and Spain.

Belgium’s Defense Minister described the operations as highly sophisticated, employing formation flying and control systems that render them resistant to jamming technology.

The head of British Armed Forces, Richard Knighton stated publicly that “we don’t know, and the Belgians don’t yet know the source of those drones,” despite advanced military technology and multiple interception attempts.

Police tried using helicopters and drone jamming equipment at the Kleine-Brogel Air Force Base, which according to a 2019 NATO Parliamentary Assembly report is one of six active air bases in five European countries housing B-61 nuclear bombs.

The objects simply disappeared after several kilometers.

In response to the escalating threat, Belgium held an emergency meeting of the National Security Council on November 5th, resulting in immediate measures including authorization for the Belgian military to shoot down unidentified objects over sensitive sites and a €50 million investment in counter-drone capabilities.

The UK, Germany, and France have deployed counter-unmanned aerial vehicle units and equipment to Belgium, yet no objects have been intercepted to date.

The situation draws stark parallels to the New Jersey incidents of November and December 2024, where according to the FBI, over 4,000 reports were filed and thousands of citizens documented observations on social media.

However, federal investigators did not identify any suspects or recover any drones, and most sightings were later attributed to routine explanations despite the lack of physical evidence.

President Donald Trump suggested that NATO countries should shoot down objects that violate their airspace, yet when similar incidents occurred in New Jersey, none were shot down due to federal restrictions and safety concerns.

Many officials and media outlets have blamed Russia for the current European incursions, but Belgium’s Defense Minister Theo Francken stated there is no hard evidence linking the objects to Russia, though security officials suspect Moscow may be involved.

Russia denied any involvement in October. The fundamental reality remains unchanged whether in 1967 Montana, 2024 New Jersey, or 2025 Belgium: unknown objects continue to appear over the most sensitive nuclear facilities, demonstrate advanced capabilities that resist current interception technology, and authorities cannot identify, catch, or stop them.

Political consultant Dana Williamson, 53, of Carmichael, was charged by a federal grand jury with conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruct justice, subscribing to false tax returns, and making false statements, U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced. The 23-count indictment was unsealed following Williamson’s arrest this morning.

“This is a crucial step in an ongoing political corruption investigation that began more than three years ago,” said U.S. Attorney Grant. “As it always has, the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly with our law enforcement partners to protect the people of California from political corruption.”

“Today’s charges are the result of three years of relentless investigative work, in partnership with IRS Criminal Investigation and the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” said FBI Sacramento Special Agent in Charge Sid Patel. “The FBI will remain vigilant in its efforts to uncover fraud and corruption, ensuring our government systems are held to the highest standards.”

“Disguising personal luxuries as business expenses—especially to claim improper tax deductions or to willfully file fraudulent tax returns is a serious criminal offense with severe consequences,” said IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) Oakland Field Office Special Agent in Charge Linda Nguyen. “IRS-CI will pursue charges against those who deliberately exploit their business for personal enrichment.”

According to court documents, between February 2022 and September 2024, Williamson conspired with others to divert approximately $225,000 in funds from a dormant political campaign to an associate’s personal use. Collectively, they funneled the money through various business entities and disguised it as pay for what was, in reality, a no-show job.

The indictment also alleges that Williamson conspired with a business associate to create false, backdated contracts after receiving a civil subpoena in January 2024 from the U.S. Attorney’s Office regarding Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans made to Williamson’s business.

Williamson also subscribed to false tax returns claiming more than $1 million in business deductions for what were actually personal and nondeductible expenditures, such as private jet travel, luxury hotel stays, home furnishings, and designer handbags, as well as deductions for no-show jobs for friends and family.

When questioned by FBI agents in connection with ongoing investigations into the diversion of campaign funds, the backdated contracts, and allegations of public corruption, Williamson made false statements to the agents regarding each of those topics.

Williamson is scheduled to make her initial appearance on the charges at 2:00 p.m. in the U.S. Courthouse in Sacramento.

The United States concurrently unsealed charging documents related to this case for two other individuals charged by information.

This case is the product of a multiyear investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and IRS Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael D. Anderson, Rosanne Rust, and Katherine T. Lydon, and Public Integrity Section Trial Attorney Alexandre Dempsey are prosecuting the case.

If convicted, Williamson faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count of bank fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud; up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count of conspiracy to obstruct and making a false statements; and up to three years in prison and a $100,000 fine for each count of subscribing to a false tax return. Any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables. The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
