Behind NASA's tantalising hints of alien life lies a scientific community still weighing the evidence, not ready to declare we are not alone.

NASA's most eye-catching hints of alien life on Mars and a distant exoplanet left headlines breathless in 2025, but a major new survey of hundreds of astrobiologists suggests most experts do not yet believe extraterrestrial life has probably been found.

The excitement began with two heavily publicised announcements. In April 2025, researchers studying the exoplanet K2-18b reported possible traces of dimethyl sulphide and dimethyl disulphide in its atmosphere, molecules associated with biological activity on Earth.

Later, in September, NASA said a Martian rock dubbed 'Cheyava Falls' appeared to preserve a potential biosignature in the form of 'leopard spots' mineral rings that, on Earth, are often linked to microbial life.

Alongside the cautious technical language, the press releases came with potent soundbites.

One NASA press statement spoke of the 'strongest hints yet' of life on K2-18b, while Administrator Sean Duffy described Cheyava Falls as 'the closest we have ever come' to discovering life on Mars.

Those phrases did exactly what they were designed to do. They seized public attention and fed a sense that we are on the cusp of answering one of humanity's oldest questions.

What was much less clear was whether astrobiologists themselves shared that sense of imminence.

A team led from Durham University decided to ask them. Shortly after each announcement, the researchers polled astrobiologists across the global community, explicitly to find out how expert opinion was distributed rather than inferred from a handful of vocal commentators.

Respondents were asked a stark question: did they think extraterrestrial life had probably been found in the reported observations?

On K2-18b, the answer was largely no. Only 6.6% of the surveyed astrobiologists agreed that scientists had probably found alien life in the exoplanet's atmosphere.

Nearly two‑thirds disagreed, and 28.0% chose a neutral position. That is a long way from the confident 'the science says' tone often heard in public debate.

The result for Cheyava Falls looked a little more hopeful but still firmly guarded.

In the Mars case, 15.1% agreed that life had probably been found in the sample, 44.6% disagreed and 40.3% remained neutral. Confidence, if that is the word, had ticked upwards, yet outright endorsement remained a minority stance.

Seen from arm's length, both cases might appear simply as 'scientists mostly unconvinced.' Look closer at the distribution of views, however, and the pattern is more interesting. In the K2-18b survey, 35.1% of respondents 'strongly disagreed' that life had probably been detected.

For the Mars rock, that figure fell sharply to 11.1%. Many experts had not flipped from no to yes; they had shifted from emphatic rejection towards a more tentative, wait-and-see posture.

That softening matters. It suggests that NASA's Mars claim, though far from universally accepted, landed in a space where specialists felt the evidence was at least worth taking seriously, even if it fell short of the threshold for a probable detection.

One plausible explanation lies in the nature of the evidence itself. The K2-18b signal came from atmospheric spectra captured across interstellar distances, an inherently indirect and noisy method.

By contrast, Cheyava Falls is a physical rock sample that can be probed and cross‑checked in high detail.

Even so, astrobiologists have spent decades learning that nature can mimic life. Mineral patterns, chemical gradients, seemingly organised structures all can arise from strictly non‑biological processes.

The difficult part is not imagining how life might produce a signal, but exhaustively mapping the lifeless routes that could yield something very similar.

NASA Claims and 'What Scientists Think'

The Durham team's work is blunt in one respect: scientific opinion is almost never a simple yes/no affair.

Strong agreement, mild agreement, neutrality, mild disagreement and strong disagreement each tell us something about how a research community is digesting a claim.

A large neutral block, such as the 40.3% seen in the Mars survey, can signal different things at once. Some scientists may consider the evidence finely balanced.

Others may feel the data are simply too preliminary to justify any firm view. Still others might be biding their time until independent teams replicate or challenge the findings.

Translating that complexity into a single headline about 'what scientists believe' is at best an approximation, at worst a distortion.

Nothing in the survey proves the K2-18b or Cheyava Falls signals are not biological. Equally, nothing confirms they are. On the current evidence, claims that NASA has definitively found alien life should be taken with a grain of salt.

Why Measuring Expert Opinion Matters

Although the survey focused on astrobiology, its authors argue the wider lesson runs through climate science, pandemic response, artificial intelligence and medical research, where political decisions often hinge on appeals to scientific consensus.

Sometimes, such consensus genuinely exists. Sometimes it does not. More often, we lack structured ways of tracking how expert judgement changes as new evidence trickles in.

Public debate instead leans on a few prominent voices, selective quotes and assumptions about what 'the community' thinks.

At Durham, the group behind the astrobiology survey has set up C‑Scope, the Centre for Scientific Community Opinion Polling and Evaluation, to study these dynamics systematically.

The project is not intended to replace data with headcounts, or to treat majority opinion as truth. Its aim is more modest and, arguably, more urgent: to understand how scientists collectively navigate uncertainty at exactly the moment when the rest of us most want an unequivocal answer.

"Dunham’s boss atUSAID in Indonesia, Dr. Donald Gordon Jr., author of Credit for Small Farmers in Developing Countries for USAID (1976), was identified in Julius Mader’s 1968 book, Who Who’s in the CIA, as a CIA agent.9

Another boss, Peter Geithner, was future Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner’s father.

Ann obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in anthropology at the University of Hawaii, writing a thesis which argued that Indonesian villagers were dynamic and could produce greater wealth if they had access to market incentives and capital.

Ann went to Indonesia in the mid 1960s at the time that the CIA supported a military coup led by General Suharto against the left-wing regime of Sukarno.

Over two million suspected members of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) were rounded up and massacred in its aftermath and thousands more were imprisoned—many for decades.

Much of Ann’s anthropological and consulting field work was carried out in East and Central Java, which provided a hotbed of support for the PKI—including among members of the Javanese women’s association and labor federation.

The CIA at this time employed anthropologists and development workers as undercover agents to gather information on villagers’ political affiliations, in which Ann, according to her thesis adviser, Alice Dewey, had taken an interest."

"In March 1965, Ann married an Indonesian Lieutenant Colonel, Lolo Soetoro, whom she met at the University of Hawaii’s East-West Center, a “kinder, gentler version of the School of the Americas,” according to one writer, and “cover for a training program in which Southeast Asians were brought to Hawaii and trained to go back to create agent nets,” as U.S. Information Service (USIS) Director Frank Scotten described it.

The head of the East-West Center in 1965 was Howard P. Jones, U.S. ambassador to Indonesia from 1958 to 1965.10

Jones was present in Jakarta as Suharto and his CIA-backed military officers planned the 1965 overthrow of Sukarno, who was seen, along with the PKI as an ally of China.

Jones later defended the coup in The Washington Post, writing that Suharto was merely responding to a communist coup against Sukarno led by Colonel Untung—which was actually set up by the CIA.11

A friend of Ann’s told her biographer that the marriage to Lolo was arranged, suggesting that Ann may have acted as a female “honeypot” for the CIA whose job was to recruit assets and help them obtain U.S. citizenship.

Hailing from an aristocratic family which lost out in Sukarno’s land reform, Soetoro was recalled to active duty in July 1965 before General Suharto’s right-wing coup and worked as an army geographer in Java and Papua New Guinea, where the Indonesian army brutally suppressed popular revolts.

Soetoro went on to become an executive at Mobil Oil and its liaison to Suharto, whose economic policies Dunham praised."

Jeffrey Epstein’s newly-revealed private calendar showed scheduled meetings with the current CIA director, a college president and attorney who served in the Obama administration, according to a report published Sunday.

New documents, which belonged to the rich convicted pedophile and were obtained by The Wall Street Journal, showed planned meetings with a slew of prominent individuals, including now-CIA Director William Burns, Bard College president Leon Botstein, Obama White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler and professor Noam Chomsky.

All the scheduled meetings were slated to take place after Epstein was jailed in 2008 on charges of solicitation, including soliciting a minor. WSJ could not prove each scheduled meeting actually took place, and the documents did not reveal the purpose for the meetings.

A spokesperson for Burns, who has taken the CIA’s helm since 2021 under the Biden administration, said the nation’s spy chief met with Epstein a decade ago when he was trying to leave the government.

"Director Burns recalls being introduced by a mutual friend in Washington, DC, and then met with him once briefly in New York City, about a decade ago as the Director was preparing to leave government service," CIA spokeswoman Tammy Kupperman Thorp said in comment provided to Fox News Digital.

"The Director did not know anything about him, other than he was introduced as an expert in the financial services sector and offered general advice on transition to the private sector. The Director does not recall any further contact, including receiving a ride to the airport. They had no relationship."

Ruemmler had dozens of meetings with Epstein following her work for the Obama administration and before taking the reins as Goldman Sachs' top lawyer in 2020, according to WSJ. The documents show Epstein was planning on Ruemmler joining him for a trip to Paris in 2015 and another visit to his private island in the Caribbean in 2017.

A Goldman Sachs rep told the outlet that Ruemmler had a working relationship with Epstein when she was employed at law firm Latham & Watkins LLP, but did not travel with Epstein. The spokesperson said Epstein introduced Ruemmler to potential legal clients, such as Bill Gates.

"Many of Ms. Ruemmler's contacts related to a potential representation involving the Gates Foundation, a representation of the Edmond de Rothschild bank, and other business opportunities," a Goldman Sachs spokesperson told Fox News Digital on Sunday.

"I regret ever knowing Jeffrey Epstein," Ruemmler said, according to WSJ.

The Journal reported that the majority of people they spoke to said they met with Epstein for donations or to make powerful connections. Botstein, who has served as Bard College’s president since 1975, said he met with Epstein to try to get him to donate to the liberal arts school.

"I was an unsuccessful fundraiser and actually the object of a little bit of sadism on his part in dangling philanthropic support," Botstein told the outlet. "That was my relationship with him."

Other prominent figures on the documents included:

Ariane de Rothschild, chief executive of the Swiss private bank Edmond de Rothschild Group; Joshua Cooper Ramo, who at the time served on the boards of Starbucks Corp. and FedEx Corp; former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak; Harvard University professor Martin Nowak; and anthropologist Helen Fisher.

ROME, October 28, 2013 - World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim and His Holiness Pope Francis met today at the Vatican to discuss their mutual efforts to end extreme poverty and provide greater opportunities for the poor and vulnerable.

“I was so grateful to meet with the Holy Father and was inspired by his passion and commitment to help the poor, the sick, and the hungry,” Kim said. “We talked about ways we could work together with faith leaders to make a preferential option for the poor, so they can have greater opportunity and justice in their lives.”

Kim thanked Pope Francis for his strong statements encouraging humble service to the less fortunate, as well as his support for better education, health care, environmental protection, and jobs with fair wages to help the poor lift themselves out of poverty.

Following the 20-minute meeting, Pope Francis and Kim agreed to explore ways to work together to end extreme poverty.

During his visit, Kim also met with Monseigneur Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States, and discussed closer collaboration between the Church and the World Bank Group.

The World Bank, the Catholic Church, and the Global Future of Development

Contact between the two institutions has been sporadic. The Bank’s focus is projects with governments to address economic development, while the Church works mainly through social channels. Recently, however, the leaders of both institutions have articulated convergent approaches to human development that link economics with health, education, and the environment. As World Bank President Jim Yong Kim put it after his meeting with Pope Francis in October 2013, “We share a vision of a world with greater compassion for all people in need.”

This spring Georgetown’s new Global Futures Initiative is inviting faculty and students to explore that common vision and how to realize it in practice. A series of lectures by President Kim and his colleague Chief Economist Kaushik Basu are catalyzing conversations on campus and on the web, including one with 20 participants from Catholic and Jesuit colleges and universities around the world.

In that conversation thus far, bloggers from Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, India, South Korea, Japan, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Rwanda, and the United States have highlighted two areas of overlap and one difference of emphasis in emergent approaches to development within the Bank and within the Church.

Mental Models. Kim’s first lecture, on the Ebola crisis, highlighted the Bank’s recent work on mental models—the often unconscious ideas and values that frame problems and can impede the search for creative solutions. What Francis calls the “globalization of indifference” exemplifies a destructive mental model—the widespread assumption that economic forces are beyond our control and that fundamental questions of justice should not frame our policy thinking.

Social Inequality. In his first lecture, on global economic trends, Kaushik Basu discussed the Bank’s adoption of “shared prosperity” as a priority goal. The emphasis not just on extreme poverty but also on inequality parallels developments in Catholic social thought in recent years. As inequality has sharpened—the wealth of the richest global 1 percent is likely to soon surpass that of the other 99 percent—Francis has addressed it as “the root of social evil” and a threat to the global common good.

Accompaniment. A cross-cutting current within the blogs—the importance of personal engagement with the poor in a spirit of mutual respect—points to a difference of emphasis between the Bank and the Church. As an intergovernmental institution with a secular ethos, the Bank cannot approach human dignity as grounded in transcendence or in a Gospel command of love. Francis’ radical call to accompany the poor in their struggle makes development a personal, as well as a political, imperative.

Ultimately the World Bank, like the Catholic Church and other faith communities, acknowledges the importance of personal engagement in advancing social and political goals. Any appeal to rid the world of poverty involves a call to individual conscience. As Kim reminded the Georgetown students at the close of his lecture, “You are the first generation in the history of the world that can end extreme poverty in your lifetimes.”

In a letter addressed to the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, Pope Francis noted that over the last year, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, "our world has been forced to confront a series of grave and interrelated socio-economic, ecological and political crises".

As the groups meet this spring, the Pope stresses that it is his hope that their discussions may contribute to a model of 'recovery' capable of generating new, more inclusive, and sustainable solutions to support the real economy, assisting individuals and communities to achieve their deepest aspirations and the universal common good.

Equal, yet excluded

Pope Francis went on to note that "for all our deeply-held convictions that all men and women are created equal, many of our brothers and sisters in the human family, especially those at the margins of society, are effectively excluded from the financial world". The pandemic, he continued, has reminded us that "no one is saved alone". "If we are to come out of this situation as a better, more humane, and solidary world," he said, "new and creative forms of social, political and economic participation must be devised, sensitive to the voice of the poor and committed to including them in the building of our common future", through inclusive projects.

Need for a global plan

The Pope then noted that many countries are now consolidating a recovery plan for Covid, but that "there remains an urgent need for a global plan that can create new or regenerate existing institutions, particularly those of global governance, and help to build a new network of international relations for advancing the integral human development of all peoples". This, he explained, means giving poorer and less developed nations an effective share in decision-making and facilitating access to the international market.

We cannot overlook the “ecological debt” that exists especially between the global north and south, continued the Pope. "We are, in fact, in debt to nature itself, as well as the people and countries affected by human-induced ecological degradation and biodiversity loss", he added. Pope Francis visited Washington D.C. on September 22-24, 2015. While a stop at the offices of the World Bank Group were not on his schedule for that trip, the Bank and the Catholic Church shared many objectives with regard to the development of the world's poorer countries. This commonality of ideals and principles was perhaps articulated most effectively in an encyclical titled "On the Development of Peoples" disseminated by Pope Paul VI in 1967. In the late 1960s, when Paul VI's message was published, the World Bank's understanding of and involvement in development was broadening to include social and humanitarian aspects. One of the many secret societies who have been tabbed as the hidden puppet masters behind the New World Order, the Shickshinny Knights of Malta – also known as the American Grand Priory of the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta – are headquartered in the modest town of Shickshinny, Pennsylvania, in Luzerne County, an area settled largely by German and Russian immigrants. Some of their descendants emigrated from Russia to Pennsylvania and brought the knightly traditions of their forefathers with them; in 1908, the Order’s Grand Priory in America was founded. By this process, the heritage of the original Knights Hospitallers made its way to Luzerne County. Despite their lurid reputation in certain conspiracy theories dealing with the New World Order, the Shickshinny Knights are among the smaller conservative secret societies in twenty-first-century America. Rome is preparing to welcome a theatrical experiment that intertwines politics, law and entertainment, bringing back to the stage a central figure of recent international history through a format that has aroused attention and debate for years. This summer, the Vandenberg Library is inviting the community to cultivate their imaginations with the launch of the "Plant a Seed, Read at Your Library This Summer!" reading program, running from June 6 to July 31.

A special highlight for readers this year is the Col. Horne Reading List Challenge, curated by Col. James Horne, Space Launch Delta 30 commander.

“Rather than simply challenging individuals to read and log minutes, this year we invite everyone to embark on a shared journey,” Holland said. “One that connects Vandenberg community members through the power of these compelling stories."

For the commander, the curated list is about giving service members and the community insights to help them grow both personally and professionally.

"Reading is one of the most powerful habits a person can build,” Horne said. “It offers a rare opportunity to step back from the daily mission, challenge your own perspectives and absorb the hard-earned wisdom of innovators and leaders who have navigated incredibly difficult challenges."

For Horne, this habit started early.

As his career progressed, so did his intellectual curiosity.

“After college, I discovered how much you could learn from the biographies of great leaders, and I devoured prize-winning books about John Adams, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf,” Horne explained.

“One of the biggest realizations I remember is reading about Hamilton and realizing the profound but overlooked impact he made on our founding as a nation.”

Supposedly, the Unveiling of a Hovering Tesla Has Not Been Canceled. Just Postponed Until August

Elon Musk says a lot of things are coming soon. One of those things is a thruster-powered, hovering car.

For about nine years Elon Musk has claimed some variation on the following:

There’s a flying and/or hovering Tesla Roadster in the works.

The flying and/or hovering is part of a new system that primarily provides unprecedented acceleration.

This system may also enhance sharp turns and braking.

These abilities are enabled by SpaceX cold gas thrusters.

Thruster-equipped Teslas will have special SpaceX air tanks in place of a backseat.

This all, of course, starts with the company bringing back the original Tesla model, the Roadster, a prototype of which was shown at an event in 2017—though Musk’s more confident claim that the Roadster would fly or hover would not come until two years later, in 2019.

According to an X post last year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman paid Tesla $45,000 to preorder one in 2018, then he tried to cancel the order last year, only to find that the email address Tesla had been using no longer existed.

In October of last year, Elon Musk told Joe Rogan that a new Roadster model would soon be demoed, and that the demo would be “unforgettable.” In March he said this Roadster would be “banger next-level.”

But no April announcement seemed forthcoming, and at the end of April, Musk said on an earnings call that he hoped it would happen in about a month, meaning the end of May or the beginning of June.

Now it’s early June and there’s no sign of the unveiling, but a new report in the Information finally has some detail. Sort of.

The detail, according to the Information, is that the new Roadster won’t be unveiled until at least August.

The demo, a joint effort between Tesla and SpaceX, is supposed to show off the aforementioned cold gas thrusters—the ones that provide unprecedented acceleration, plus hovering and/or flight, and it sounds as if Tesla is still hammering the kinks out.

Musk reportedly (per the Information) received his own demo of the thruster system in April—meaning well after he confidently announced that the unveiling would be “banger next-level,” and before it was repeatedly postponed.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage of the elite Rubicon drone unit intercepting Ukrainian kamikaze UAVs.

The video shows more than a dozen interceptions of Ukrainian mid- and long-range fixed-wing B-2 and FP-2 kamikaze drones.

Rubicon operators reportedly often only need a thread dropped from a drone while flying above an enemy UAV, tangling its propeller and causing it to crash.

In recent months, Kiev has intensified attacks on Russian regions using long-range fixed-wing drones such as FP-2 models shown in the footage, often targeting civilian infrastructure and vehicles.

Last week, these types of strikes killed at least 35 civilians, including three children, and injured 182 people, according to Rodion Miroshnik, who leads the Russian Foreign Ministry mission responsible for tracking Ukrainian war crimes.

Earlier in May, Ukraine killed 21 students, mostly young women, in a double-tap drone strike on a college dormitory in Starobelsk, Russia.
