Longer autumn nights will give skywatchers more time to look up in October. The month features a variety of astronomy events, including the best time of the year to view Saturn and one of autumn’s top meteor showers.

Saturn opposition: Oct. 4

Saturn will be one of the highlights of the night sky in early October as the planet reaches opposition, marking the best time of the year to see the ringed planet.

Opposition occurs when Saturn is directly opposite the sun from the perspective of Earth. Around this time, the planet rises in the east near nightfall, remains visible throughout the night and eventually sets in the west around daybreak.

No telescope is needed to spot Saturn, although using one can reveal the planet’s iconic rings. Although Saturn reaches opposition on Oct. 4, skywatchers do not need to circle one specific night on the calendar.

The planet will remain an excellent target throughout the month, giving people the flexibility to choose an evening with favorable weather.

Orionid meteor shower: Oct. 21-22

On Monday, NASA and Boeing provided an update on the company’s Starliner spacecraft, including adding additional crew missions and certifying a new rocket for crew transportation to low Earth orbit.

“We are living through the most exciting era of space exploration since Apollo,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.

“As this domain continues to open, there will be growing demand for launch vehicles, transfer stages, landers, and, of course, spacecraft that carry astronauts.

NASA has been committed to having multiple crew transportation options since the beginning of the Commercial Crew Program.

We have worked closely with Boeing to address the issues identified on previous Starliner flights, and we intend to see this vehicle return to flight in support of the International Space Station and future commercial destinations.”

The agency intends to exercise options for a fifth and sixth flight to and from the space station using Starliner, and will work with Boeing and United Launch Alliance to certify the Vulcan rocket for use after the Atlas V rocket’s final flight.

“We are starting with an uncrewed Starliner-1 mission to the International Space Station to validate the improvements made to the spacecraft and gather the flight data we need,” said Isaacman.

“From there, we will use what we learn, continue implementing the corrective actions identified by our Program Investigation Team, and complete the testing and certification required for crewed flight. Our current plan is to return astronauts on Starliner-2 by 2028.”

NASA’s commercial crew efforts aim to preserve a U.S. crew transportation capability for ensuring continued access to space.

The work is challenging, however, it is essential for responsibly concluding space station operations, transitioning to commercial space stations, and expanding commercial access.

In February, NASA released findings from the agency’s Program Investigation Team outlining the programmatic and technical issues resulting in an uncrewed return of the Starliner during its first crewed flight in 2024.

In total, the investigation identified 61 recommendations to NASA to ensure that future missions meet the high standards required for human spaceflight.

The report specifically identified issues with Starliner’s service module reaction control thrusters operating outside of their engineering qualification, which resulted in the loss of control experienced during its Crew Flight Test.

Through significant ground testing and analysis, NASA and Boeing learned the service module thruster performance issues resulted from a combination of factors, including the thermal environment and features inherent in its design.

Based on the findings, Boeing has made thermal modifications to the spacecraft’s service module which NASA will evaluate for improved performance on Starliner-1.

NASA and Boeing also have jointly decided to implement an additional thruster valve design modification in support of spacecraft certification and future crewed flights.

The uncrewed Starliner-1 has the potential to fly in December of this year or January 2027.

It will serve as an engineering evaluation mission to verify improved thermal environments, obtain necessary performance data for system qualification, and identify residual risk ahead of crewed missions.

“Starliner’s next flight is a critical step on the path to achieving full system certification and ensuring a sustained human presence in low Earth orbit,” said Dana Weigel, manager of NASA’s Low Earth Orbit Program.

“With the safety of our space station crew and the public as our highest priority, we will test Starliner’s propulsion system through targeted demonstration objectives and disciplined operational controls.

These steps are essential to validating Starliner’s thermal performance which is a key element for the certification.”

Following the flight, NASA and Boeing will complete the service module thruster valve design modification, which is focused on addressing poppet seal extrusion and its adverse effects on thruster performance.

Boeing also will implement other improvements across the spacecraft including installation of new crew module thrusters, batteries, and minor modifications to the parachute system for increased performance and reliability in support of system certification.

Advanced Health Research Begins Week as Station Awaits Crew-13 Mission

Expedition 75 began the week scanning veins, checking out space workout gear, and testing specialized suits to ease the adjustment to Earth’s gravity. Back on Earth, NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13 members are counting down to a launch on Oct. 1.

NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Anil Menon, station commander and flight engineer respectively, started their shift together with vein scans in the Columbus laboratory module.

Meir operated the Ultrasound 3 device and scanned Menon’s jugular vein then measured his blood pressure for the Venous Flow investigation. Doctors will analyze the biomedical data to detect potential space-caused blood conditions such as blood clots or changes to blood chemistry.

NASA flight engineer Jack Hathaway assisted Menon at the beginning of the vein study collecting a blood sample and placing it inside a centrifuge for spinning.

At the conclusion of the sample processing, Menon analyzed the sample for a red blood cell count to help doctors determine if the cardiovascular system, influenced by microgravity, delivers adequate oxygen throughout a crew member’s body.

Afterward, Hathaway collected station water samples for microbial analysis then cleaned his crew quarters in the port side of the Harmony module.

Meir later joined the three crewmates she will return to Earth with next week and tested specialized suits that may help the foursome quickly adjust to gravity after nearly eight months in space.

The suit may help maintain adequate cerebral blood pressure once on the ground and prevent dizziness or light-headedness at the end of a mission. Meir and Hathaway along with flight engineers Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) and Andrey Fedyaev of Roscosmos are preparing to ride the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft back to Earth a few days after the SpaceX Crew-13 mission launches and docks to the orbital outpost on Thursday. Oct. 1.

NASA Highlights Lessons Learned From Swift Boost Mission

A commercial mission to boost NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory concluded without raising the spacecraft’s orbit, but the agency and industry vendor Katalyst Space have gained valuable experience that will benefit future in-space servicing programs.

“From the beginning, this was a high-risk, high-reward mission,” said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Without intervention, Swift was going to re-enter the atmosphere by year’s end.

And while we’ll be sad to see Swift’s mission come to a close, we knew this boost effort would be valuable to the agency on multiple levels — advancing U.S. spacecraft servicing technology, challenging us to meet unprecedented mission timelines, and testing how we operate satellites to extend their time in low Earth orbit.

We’re very proud of how quickly this team got so far, and we’re capturing lessons learned to ensure we’re ready to go even farther.”

Swift, which launched in November 2004, was designed to study gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful explosions in the cosmos.

Over the last two decades, the observatory has revolutionized our understanding of how the universe works, from studying comets and asteroids in our own solar system and various types of cosmic explosions to flares from black holes in distant galaxies.

All spacecraft in low Earth orbit experience drag from our planet’s atmosphere. If they don’t have propulsion systems, this drag gradually reduces their altitudes. A period of increased solar activity magnified this effect on Swift.

After deciding to investigate the potential for a boost attempt, NASA had only a few months to issue a call for proposals through its Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation and fund design concept studies through the agency’s Small Business Innovation Research program.

In September 2025, NASA contracted Katalyst, based in Flagstaff, Arizona, to attempt the mission. The company had around one year to design, build, test, and launch a satellite that would then meet, grab, and lift Swift.

The LINK spacecraft took off from Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands in July aboard a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket.

Katalyst selected the Pegasus as the best launch option for reaching the observatory on the mission’s condensed timeline, based on the mission’s orbital and programmatic needs.

After successfully reaching space and performing initial spacecraft checkouts, LINK began experiencing intermittent communications losses and developed issues with its orientation control.

Following a period of around-the-clock troubleshooting from both teams, NASA and Katalyst agreed to scale back the mission.

LINK would no longer attempt to grab or boost Swift but instead attempt to perform a series of technology demonstrations that would advance the capabilities of the U.S. commercial servicing industry.

These included exercising the spacecraft’s xenon-powered propulsion system and three robotic arms, which were designed to provide flexibility regarding where LINK could safely grapple Swift.

NASA formally concluded the agency’s involvement in LINK’s mission on Sept. 3. The spacecraft re-entered the atmosphere on Sept. 25.

“LINK was built to take on a problem that did not have an easy solution,” said Ghonhee Lee, CEO of Katalyst Space. "This was an ambitious mission on an aggressive timeline.

While we did not accomplish every objective we set out to achieve, in less than a year we went from mission concept to launching and operating the first commercial space robot. This is a foundation we can build on.”

Science missions like Swift take years to develop and then operate in orbit for decades. For the Swift boost, however, the most important factor was the timeline.

All decision-making and risk acceptance hinged on predictions showing the observatory sinking to the point of no return — an altitude of around 185 miles (300 kilometers) — in fall 2026. As such, the boost mission required a new form of agile project management for NASA.

Swift team members in SSMO (Space Science Mission Operations) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, worked with Katalyst to develop milestones and approval processes that gave the mission the best chance of success while being flexible enough to move quickly toward launch.

Both groups received valuable input and feedback from NASA’s Engineering and Safety Center when tackling questions and issues that arose during integration and testing.

“Katalyst was committed to leveraging NASA’s deep experience to give themselves the best possible chance of successfully achieving the unprecedented challenge we gave them,” said Russell Carpenter, project manager in SSMO at NASA Goddard “Missions like these, where public-private teams work tenaciously to overcome obstacles, are an inspiration to the world, reminding us that striving for the near impossible brings out what is exceptional in all of us.”

While teams at NASA and Katalyst were racing to get LINK ready on the ground, flight controllers in Swift’s Mission Operations Center, located at Penn State in University Park in Pennsylvania, were trying to keep Swift above the critical altitude for as long as possible.

Below it, any boost attempt would become increasingly difficult.

During normal operations, the Penn State team sends a plan to Swift that tells the observatory which cosmic objects and events to observe each day.

In December 2025, however, the controllers started swapping around 25% of these science targets for points on the sky that would minimize drag when Swift was trained on them. By February, the team had switched over to this approach entirely.

“Even though Swift was not executing pointed science observations from mid-February to late August, we nonetheless continued Penn State’s history of innovative space research and operations, pioneering new methods to minimize drag experienced by the spacecraft,” said John Nousek, the mission director and professor of astronomy and astrophysics in the university’s Eberly College of Science. “These changes bought valuable time for the boost mission and can be carried forward for future NASA missions.”

The team also couldn’t point too close to Earth, the Moon, or the Sun, since the brightness of all three could overheat and damage the observatory’s instruments.

Pointing Swift in the most streamlined position also tilted it too close to the atmosphere, where particles could collide with the telescopes and affect future observations.

The team struck a balance that managed to maintain Swift’s altitude above the critical threshold for several months.

“We’re grateful to all our collaborators for the incredible amount of time and dedication they’ve put into the boost mission,” said S. Bradley Cenko, Swift’s principal investigator at NASA Goddard.

“When Neil Gehrels, Swift’s namesake, designed the observatory, nothing like it had ever launched. He would have celebrated that this boost effort was part of Swift’s legacy, that it allowed NASA to try something new and daring even though the outcome wasn’t guaranteed.

That’s how we explore the universe — as a team, learning from each other, constantly pushing forward.”

Oil Slides As Qatar Touts 'Talks' Again; Iran Struck Large Crude Tanker Overnight

Iran is said to have struck a Very Large Crude Carrier in the Strait of Hormuz late on Monday, signaling what will likely be the resumption of strikes on foreign vessels seeking to navigate the Strait of Hormuz, after last week's diplomatic talks at the UN failed to produce a breakthrough. Still, for the time being more oil is being shipped through the strait compared to where the situation was for the past many months of war.

Maritime monitor UKMTO indicated the vessel was struck by a suspected unknown projectile, resulting in a fire. The fire looks to have been extinguished quickly, with the crew safe and the vessel underway on its transit.

On Tuesday Iran's parliament speaker Bagher Ghalibaf has reiterated that America should know that "in a region where we don't sell oil, no one will sell oil." Later in the day, Fars reported that another drone has been fired an 'illicit' ship, however few details have been given.

Ghalibaf further described during a parliament session that "the era of intimidation and threats is over" and that the Islamic Republic would escalate its responses.

But he also echoed prior words of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who at last week's UN General Assembly said that Iran still seeks diplomacy while asserting its rights.

Similar messaging has been newly issued on the Iranian military front, with Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi, who is a senior advisor to the Supreme Leader, saying that the armed forces stand ready to expand the confrontation to new fronts.

Referencing the ongoing Houthi conflict with the Saudis, wherein the Iran-aligned rebel group has captured Yemen's Red Sea coast, Safavi stated, "The addition of the Bab al-Mandab Strait would change the scene of the war," as quoted in IRIB News.

While some reports have long pointed to the likelihood that IRGC advisers assisted the Houthis this month, the high-ranking general suggested Tehran could get more directly involved, or could tell the Houthis to close the Bab al-Mandab Strait to all foreign vessels.

Russia's Drones Zero In On Ukraine's Data Centers, Mobile Providers

The Russian defense ministry on Tuesday indicated that it attacked and struck two military cargo vessels in the Black Sea as well as two data centers in the Ukrainian capital overnight.

The vessels, which were sailing foreign flags, were struck off Odessa, President Zelensky also confirmed in a Tuesday statement.

The Kyiv region along with ten other areas came under attack overnight, Zelensky acknowledged. But it is the capital which has been getting pounded, also following many weeks and months of Ukraine's long-range drone strikes on Russian territory.

On Monday at least two people were killed when a drone hit National Academy of Sciences in the central part of the capital. The academy in a statement blasted the attack as "Russian terror" and "barbarity" aimed at "peaceful people who were simply at their workplaces."

A couple of new 'themes' have emerged in what have long been a nightly reality of devastating air raids. First, high flying jet-powered drones have been increasingly deployed by Russia.

The new Geran-5 is said to have anti-jamming capabilities and can travel up to an estimated 370mph, reports say. All of this makes them extremely hard to intercept.

Another theme is the war on data centers and mobile infrastructure. One regional source cited the Russian Defense Ministry as calling the campaign a 'mandatory digital detox' with grim sarcasm.

The same source documents the following recent attacks on data centers in Ukraine:

Russian forces continue to strike Ukrainian data centers. On September 25, they attacked an office building in Kyiv that houses a Datagroup data center. The center was damaged, but the company said all its services continued to run from backup sites.

On September 26, a Cosmonova data center in another Kyiv office building was hit. It had to shut down, interrupting broadcasts by several television channels. The strikes on data centers also left some Kyiv residents without internet access.

On September 28, a Russian drone struck an office building in Dnipro. The regional administration reported damage and casualties but did not say which companies occupied the building…

On September 26, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it was striking data centers because they “process and transmit intelligence data for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.” The next day, the ministry posted an image of a drone on social media with the caption “Digital detox” and the comment “Mandatory!”

At the start of this week Russia hit the headquarters of Kyivstar, Ukraine's largest mobile service provider, according to a statement by the company.

Newly Released Fauci Files Reveal Dangerous NIAID-Funded Aerosolized Ebola Research

Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) released documents from Dr. Fauci's diary and emails Monday detailing his dangerous NIAID-funded research during the Obama Administration, including a 2015 experiment that exposed vaccinated monkeys to aerosolized Ebola.

The risky research was conducted at the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick under a NIAID task order. The NIAID study compared four vaccines in groups of four monkeys exposed to aerosolized Ebola. The exposure was engineered to drive the virus deep into the lungs in a way natural infection would not, the records show.

The vaccinated primates reportedly developed necrosis, inflammation, and fibrin in the lungs, while the unvaccinated controls did not, indicating that the vaccine itself was making the disease worse. The experiments left 80 percent of vaccinated monkeys dead.

"What idiots those guys at USAMRIID are," Fauci wrote on March 7, 2016. The work "should have been a classified experiment that never should have been done in the first place," he added. Two days later, however, then-NIAID director wrote that the experiments were "important for bio defense."

Fauci was outraged that the failed vaccine research was shared with U.S. embassy officials in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

"This should have been a classified experiment," he wrote in his diary. "The foolish DOD people send the data to the FDA and then circulated as FYI to various embassies including those in West Africa where we are about to engage on a much larger DSD vaccine trial for Ebola."

According to Fauci, the embassy officials "went bonkers" because it looked like the U.S. wanted to vaccinate people with a dangerous vaccine.

He also said such experiments should have been classified because they "could indicate a vulnerability."

However, NIAID's own report states that at no time had clearances been requested, nor was classification ever mentioned. Moreover, the data had already gone to vaccine manufacturers, and some of it had already been published.

Nonetheless, Fauci was dismayed when a Department of Defense official mentioned the experiments were funded by NIAID during a White House briefing. "No one followed up on that, but I almost fell off my chair!!!!" he wrote in an email to his colleagues at NIAID.

Following this disclosure, NIAID officials discussed "damage control" in an email chain. "We may need to a bit of damage control here," NIAID's biodefense director wrote.

The problem for Fauci wasn't the dangerous experiments, but the possibility the public could find out about the dangerous experiments. So he took immediate steps to have the research classified.

"The DoD folks said that they wanted to publish the data. I said that I thought that it should be classified and the NSC people blew them out of the water and said that they agreed with me," he said.

Cyber Command and the Combat Support Agencies “will prioritize the use of DoW intelligence and cyber capabilities to ensure foreign actors do not meddle in our democratic systems.”

The Defense Intelligence Enterprise is directed to “execute collection and production on foreign threats to our elections, in accordance with the law, regulation, Executive direction, and DoW policies and directives.”

Cyber Command is further ordered to use its existing authorities, capabilities, and competencies — in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security — “to counter potential cyber threats from foreign actors targeting our elections.”

And he does not leave it as a suggestion. Hegseth tells the entire DIE to “mobilize every authorized asset, capability, and partnership under your command to defend our election infrastructure from foreign malign influence” so that “every lawful voter can cast their ballot free from foreign intimidation, coercion, or fear.”

“Assuring and protecting this ability is a no-fail mission,” the Secretary writes.

Russian Tu-95 bomber crashes, killing six crew – MOD

The aircraft was carrying no ammunition and came down in an uninhabited area of Russia’s Amur Region during a training flight

A Tu-95 strategic bomber has crashed during a training flight in the Amur Region in the Russian Far East, killing six crew members and injuring another, according to Moscow’s Defense Ministry.

The injured crew member was evacuated to a medical facility, the ministry said.

The aircraft was unarmed and crashed in an uninhabited area, the MOD added.

A Russian Aerospace Forces commission has been sent to the site to investigate the cause of the crash.

The Soviet-designed Tu-95, which first flew in 1952, remains the world’s fastest production turboprop aircraft. The long-range strategic bomber has been used extensively by Russia to launch Kh-101 cruise missiles at targets in Ukraine during the conflict.

The bombers are part of the Russian nuclear triad and are capable of carrying missiles with thermonuclear warheads.

Jonathan McKinsey was embroiled in a bitter custody battle when he was allegedly shot dead by his in-laws, court documents show

A transgender New York Times executive allegedly killed by his in-laws over the weekend in California was facing child-abuse charges amid a bitter family battle, newly reported court documents have revealed.

Jonathan McKinsey, 40, director of engineering for NYT Games, was gunned down on Saturday at a sports complex east of San Francisco. Police arrested his parents-in-law, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both in their late 70s, near the scene on suspicion of murder.

The pair are being held without bail and are due to appear in court on Wednesday. Police said McKinsey was deliberately targeted but have not linked the killing to the family dispute.

The incident came a week before a scheduled hearing in McKinsey’s contentious divorce and custody fight with his estranged wife, Candice Jang, according to court records cited by AP.

McKinsey transitioned from female to male in 2010, according to the Mercury News, citing court filings. The documents indicate that McKinsey and Jang were already close during his transition-related medical treatment that year. The couple subsequently married and had three children.

There is no public information on how McKinsey and Jang had their children or which person gave birth. A couple consisting of a transgender man and a biological woman would need donor sperm to conceive. Depending on the circumstances, either could provide the egg and carry the pregnancy.

The court battle featured competing allegations of abuse. Jang accused McKinsey of years of violence against her and their children. McKinsey was charged with two misdemeanor child-abuse offenses for allegedly hitting his six-year-old son in the face and leaving another child, then aged two, home alone while he went shopping. He pleaded not guilty to both charges and was seeking admission to a mental-health diversion program.

Quantum computer boldly goes where no quantum computer has gone before: Space

There's big news from the quantum world. A quantum computer has been used in space for the first time.

The device was aboard a spacecraft in low Earth orbit and demonstrated technology that could eventually help solve a problem that has been bugging satellites for years.

The issue is that when orbiting satellites send their raw data back down to Earth, bottlenecks and bandwidth limits slow everything down. One way to overcome this would be to process the raw data in situ before sending it.

So a team of physicists led by Philip Walther at the University of Vienna came up with a way that could eventually do just that.

Their solution was to build a quantum photonic processor that uses individual light particles, or photons, to perform complex operations using compact optical hardware.

But taking the idea from the drawing board to orbit was not without its challenges.

Quantum photonic systems are delicate, and radiation, large temperature changes and the vacuum of space could damage their components or disrupt their operation.

Of course, it first had to get there.

Liftoff for quantum computing!

The quantum photonic processor, which consisted of a photon-pair source, a six-mode integrated glass circuit chip, single-photon detectors and control electronics, was loaded aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It was launched into low Earth orbit on June 23, 2025.

Once it arrived in orbit, the real work began. To process information, the system shines a laser through a crystal to create pairs of photons.

It then sends those light particles through a tiny glass circuit, controlling how they travel and interfere using microscopic heaters.

Finally, sensitive detectors catch the light at the other end to measure where the photons emerge.

There was a hitch: Half the photon detectors were no longer working after launch, leaving the team with just three of the original six.

A quantum first in orbit

Despite that setback, the mission achieved its core goals. Over the first eight months in orbit, the system successfully generated, manipulated and detected pairs of photons, performing several different programmed operations.

The team also changed the chip settings and carefully tuned the photons to look for a phenomenon called two-photon interference. They successfully observed quantum interference between the light particles even in the harsh conditions of space.

But the results are only a first step.

There is still plenty of work to do before satellites can run quantum-assisted data processing tasks directly in orbit.

As the study authors explain in their paper, which is posted to the arXiv preprint server, "The next step is to close the loop between sensor and processor, encoding Earth-observation data directly into the unitary programmed on the circuit."

Reaching that goal will also require ensuring instruments can handle the extreme stresses they will face. "What remains is to keep it stable over the long acquisition times that an inference task demands, as the gradual degradation of the components reduces the coincidence rate."

Earlier this year, the UAE denied that MBZ met with Netanyahu after the Israeli prime minister's office said in May that Netanyahu had "secretly visited" the Gulf country and met with the president.

A source familiar with the meeting said at the time that Netanyahu and MBZ met in Al-Ain, an oasis city in Abu Dhabi along the country's border with Oman, on March 26.

Since coming under attack during the Iran war, the UAE has strengthened its relationships with the ‌United ⁠States and Israel, with which it opened ties as a result of the 2020 Abraham Accords. The relationship with Israel gives the UAE a lever for regional influence and a unique channel to Washington.

Fox News has revealed the person who will take over for Maria Bartiromo following her sudden exit from the network, and MAGA fans will be quite happy.

The network announced on September 25 that Larry Kudlow would host Sunday Morning Futures (10-11 AM/ET), Bartiromo’s former program, through November 8. That is the Sunday after the midterm election.

After Kudlow’s interim hosting duties conclude, the network will name a permanent replacement.

Conservatives, especially Trump, are quite familiar with Kudlow.

Kudlow formerly served as the director of the National Economic Council and assistant to the president for economic policy during Trump’s first administration. This lasted from 2018 until 2021.

After Trump’s first term concluded, Kudlow joined Fox Business in 2021. He now hosts the eponymous show “Kudlow” at 4 PM ET on weekdays.

Kudlow was also formerly a senior contributor at CNBC, where he hosted several programs. These included a post-market analysis show called The Kudlow Report.

Fox News also notes that from 1981 to 1985, Kudlow worked as an associate director for economics and planning at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in the Ronald Reagan administration.

In addition, Kudlow served as chief economist and senior managing director of the then-global investment bank, securities trading, and brokerage firm Bear Stearns.

Earlier this month, Bartiromo parted ways with Fox Newsafter leaking internal texts to the White House showing the network told staff to stop amplifying ‘election conspiracies’ Trump spread during his speech last month.

The second Trump administration increasingly resembles the Biden administration on two issues that played a major role in President Donald Trump's 2024 victory, raising the question of how many foot soldiers Republicans can turn out in November midterms.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention blew past its sibling Food and Drug Administration's targeted approvals of updated COVID-19 vaccines for elderly and high-risk Americans, quietly issuing recommendations last week that all healthy adults and children starting at 6 months old take the non-sterilizing mRNA products off-label.

The expansion is even more surprising because the FDA approved Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines without direct human evidence for the efficacy of the new formulations compared to a placebo, putting tens of millions of Americans who still get COVID vaccines for themselves or their children at risk of becoming guinea pigs.

The CDC cryptically cited "legal uncertainties and inquiries" for its one-size-fits-all jab recommendations, which simply reinstate its recommendations from the July 2025 immunization schedule for the upcoming "respiratory illness season."

Heidi Overton, nominee for FDA commissioner, pointedly affirmed at her confirmation hearing last week that the agency has deemed "all" approved vaccines on the market "safe and effective," giving the CDC cover for its off-label push.

Neither the CDC nor Department of Health and Human Services answered Just the News queries to explain the recommendations in light of the FDA's targeted approvals.

Hours before Overton's hearing Thursday, Students for Life of America sent the FDA a "notice of intent to sue," alleging failure to follow the Endangered Species Act when it approved an abortion pill in 2000 because it didn't consult with relevant agencies about mifepristone's threat to wildlife when it arrives in waterways via wastewater.

SFLA made the same legal argument when the Supreme Court reviewed mifepristone's approval, while several GOP state attorneys general asked the Environmental Protection Agency to add the abortion pill to its next "contaminant candidate list," with both citing the surge in mifepristone's at-home use since the Supreme Court overturned federal abortion rights.

The FDA's refusal to reinstate in-person prescribing requirements for mifepristone that were removed by the Biden administration, and the Trump administration's argument that states don't have legal standing to challenge FDA changes to mifepristone's conditions, had already created a rift with one of the GOP's most loyal voter bases ahead of midterms.

‘Absolute Travesty’: Dangerous Levels of Atrazine Found in Waterways Millions Use for Drinking Water

Levels of the hormone-disrupting pesticide atrazine known to harm aquatic wildlife are estimated to contaminate more than 25% of all river and stream miles in the lower 48 states — nearly 860,000 miles, according to a new analysis by the Center for Biological Diversity.

“One quarter of our rivers and streams are being treated like a sewer by corporate agriculture,” said Nathan Donley, environmental health science director at the Center for Biological Diversity.

“Just one pesticide is single-handedly polluting vast expanses of our nation’s waterways at levels that endanger people and wildlife. It’s an absolute travesty.”

The analysis, which assessed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) water contamination data, also found that dangerous levels of atrazine pollute waterways relied on by more than 20% of U.S. surface-water treatment facilities, reservoirs and water intakes that provide water for people to drink, bathe and prepare food.

The September report identified five hotspots with some of the highest levels of atrazine contamination in the country: Chesapeake Bay, Midwest Corn Belt, Florida’s Lake Okeechobee, lower Mississippi River and Texas Gulf Coast. Millions of people in these regions are served atrazine-contaminated water by their public water utility.

The areas where waterways are highly contaminated with atrazine also contain at least 675,000 wells currently supplying potable water to homes and businesses, including hotels, restaurants and office buildings.

More than 70 million pounds of atrazine are sprayed on crops each year and it is the most widely detected pesticide contaminant in U.S. rivers, streams and below-ground water supplies.

It is a known hormone-disrupting pesticide linked to birth defects, multiple cancers, and fertility problems like low sperm quality and irregular menstrual cycles.

Because of those well-documented health concerns, atrazine has been banned in more than 60 countries. Yet the EPA is in the process of reapproving its use in the U.S. for at least another 15 years.

“We need to follow the lead of over 60 countries around the world and ban atrazine once and for all,” said Donley. “Failing to do so will mean disease, death and dirty water in America for decades to come.”

In the Chesapeake Bay, more than 5.5 million acres of the bay’s watershed — encompassing over 15,000 river miles — are contaminated with atrazine at levels higher than those known to harm aquatic ecosystems. That area is home to 18 million people and more than 3,600 species of plants and animals.

In the Midwest Corn Belt, encompassing Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, more than two-thirds of the total river miles are contaminated with dangerous levels of atrazine. This includes over half of the region’s wells and 68% of the region’s drinking-water treatment facilities that source from surface water.

Florida’s 730-square-mile Lake Okeechobee is surrounded by 500,000 acres of nearby sugarcane fields, which are heavily sprayed with atrazine. The lake is visited by thousands of people each year for boating and fishing.

Atrazine-contaminated watersheds run nearly the entire length of the lower Mississippi River, many at concentrations more than five times the level the EPA has found harmful to aquatic ecosystems.

This poses a threat not only to wildlife but to the 20 million people who rely on the river for their drinking water. Water from more than 40% of the continental U.S. flows down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.

The Texas Gulf Coast from Corpus Christi to Galveston is a vital region for migrating birds, aquatic wildlife and recreational activities like swimming, boating and fishing.

More than 6 million acres in this region, covering more than 6,000 river miles, are contaminated with atrazine levels that can harm aquatic wildlife.

Texas is the state with the most public water utilities reporting atrazine contamination, with nearly 15 million people in the state drinking atrazine-contaminated water.
