The aircraft was carrying no ammunition and came down in an uninhabited area of Russia’s Amur Region during a training flight

A Tu-95 strategic bomber has crashed during a training flight in the Amur Region in the Russian Far East, killing six crew members and injuring another, according to Moscow’s Defense Ministry.

The injured crew member was evacuated to a medical facility, the ministry said.

The aircraft was unarmed and crashed in an uninhabited area, the MOD added.

A Russian Aerospace Forces commission has been sent to the site to investigate the cause of the crash.

The Soviet-designed Tu-95, which first flew in 1952, remains the world’s fastest production turboprop aircraft.

The long-range strategic bomber has been used extensively by Russia to launch Kh-101 cruise missiles at targets in Ukraine during the conflict.

The bombers are part of the Russian nuclear triad and are capable of carrying missiles with thermonuclear warheads.

Ukrainian forces struck a Russian Kasta radar system, drone command posts, ammunition depots, and other military facilities in Russian-occupied territories on September 28 and overnight into September 29, Ukraine’s General Staff reported.

According to the General Staff, Ukrainian Defense Forces targeted a Russian 39N6 Kasta radar station in Manhush, Donetsk region.

The strikes also targeted Russian drone operations in the occupied Luhansk region, hitting UAV command posts in Kyrnosove and Novoaidar.

Ukrainian forces separately struck ammunition depots used by Russian units in Druzhne, Luhansk region; Novoiehorivka, Kharkiv region; and Kachkarske, Donetsk region.

In the occupied Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainian forces also targeted a Russian logistics and materiel depot in Komysh-Zoria.

The latest strikes follow other Ukrainian operations against Russian military equipment.

On September 26, Ukraine’s 21st Separate Mechanized Brigade reported that its aerial reconnaissance units had located and destroyed a camouflaged Russian T-90 tank in the Northern Slobozhanshchyna sector.

Russian forces had attempted to conceal the vehicle, but Ukrainian reconnaissance drones detected it and identified it as a T-90. After confirming the target, the brigade deployed several drones to destroy the tank.

The StarForge system is housed in shipping containers that can be delivered pre-loaded with the latest drone and counter-drone designs, as well as the materials needed to produce them.

Designed to fit inside military cargo aircraft, the containers are equipped with 3D printers from Vancouver-based Pantheon Design.

The printers produce drone and counter-drone airframes, which are then fitted with third-party motors, batteries and guidance systems and launched from the same location.

The company says each StarForge container can ship with enough onboard material to produce between 300 and 400 drones, depending on their size and type.

“You could also produce perhaps 100 quadcopters and 50 long-range surveillance platforms, and then still have plenty of material left over for ongoing maintenance of those platforms over the course of weeks or even months,” Zimmermann said.

University of Alberta research

Researchers at the University of Alberta have partnered with Sentinel to develop the technology as the university positions itself as a larger player in Canadian defence and security initiatives, particularly in the Far North.

“As Canada’s northernmost research-intensive university, we have a long history of using world-class research to address challenges facing northern and Arctic communities, including energy security, climate resilience, and sovereignty,” a university spokesperson said in a statement to CTV News.

The university says the partnership could also have applications in civilian sectors, including emergency response, communications and health care.

“By combining research and manufacturing expertise in areas like communications systems and remote sensing, we can build better tools for Arctic operations,” it said.

“That supports both Canadian sovereignty, security and community safety in the north, while creating jobs and economic growth at home,” it said.

Canadian Army restructures divisions around major conflict, territorial defence

The StarForge system has recently undergone testing with the U.S. Marine Corps at a facility in the western United States, where troops printed, assembled and flew the drones during simulated missions.

“That’s the type of opportunity that that we’re seeking to have more and more of and getting a lot of really great feedback from forces in Canada, as well as in Western Europe, asking us if we can participate in different activities with them and help them understand how the system can be used to support their missions,” Zimmermann said.

National Defence has invited 22 companies from six countries to demonstrate emerging drone and counter-drone technologies as part of a “sandbox” field text at Canadian Forces Base Suffield in Alberta on Oct. 6.

While Sentinel was not invited to the demonstration, the military has earmarked billions of dollars for drone and counter-drone research, development and acquisition across a range of projects in the coming years.

“No contracts yet but we have had the opportunity to brief some senior members of the forces, sort of show them what we’re up to,” Zimmermann said. “There’s definitely a significant degree of interest.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has treated an accusation from a BBC correspondent with the contempt expected of a veteran diplomat.

The British state broadcaster’s Steve Rosenberg asked Lavrov if he would admit “that Russia is waging a covert hybrid war against European countries?”

“Are you referring to when we destroy the drones and missiles that Britain and continental Europe supply to Ukraine, which are then fired at us?” the Russian foreign minister retorted. “Is that what you mean by hybrid war?”

Rosenberg then dropped his line of questioning and switched to criticizing Russia for its use of “brute force” in Ukraine.

“If you are referring to the destruction of infrastructure used by the [Ukrainian] Nazi regime – with Western support – to wage war against the Russian Federation, then we are resorting to hard power to neutralize this direct threat to us,” Lavrov replied.

Rosenberg’s question to Russia’s top diplomat followed several days of high-pitch war hysteria in the UK press, including a significantly over-reported ‘security incident’ near an RAF base.

European politicians regularly describe drone sightings, fires and accidents at weapons factories,and even natural disasters as examples of a Russian “hybrid war” against the West. The term “hybrid war” is typically used in reporting cases where no hard evidence exists, as was the case when a small quadcopter drone was discovered next to a Ukrainian transport plane at Leipzig Airport in Germany last month.

In the latest such incident, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna blamed Russia on Tuesday for a fire at a drone factory in Tallinn last month. Although the Kremlin has denied any role in the blaze, the UK, France, Latvia, Lithuania, and Sweden all backed Tsahkna’s story and pledged on Tuesday to increase military aid to Kiev.

Amid an upsurge in supposed “hybrid war” incidents, Western military leaders have escalated their war rhetoric, with members of the UK’s Labour and Conservative parties both claiming last week that a military clash with Russia is inevitable, and Spanish media claiming that Italy, France, and Spain are all at risk of a Russian drone attack from the Mediterranean Sea. The latter claim, though widely echoed across the international press, was summarily debunked by senior French and Italian officials.

“We have no intention to fight with Europe…that is utter nonsense,” Lavrov told journalists at the UN General Assembly on Saturday. “But Europe is preparing for war with us, and each day they reaffirm the fact. This could become a self-fulfilling prophecy because they are investing vast amounts of money into weapons production.”

U.S. drones help capture alleged Colombian trafficker

Colombian security forces used U.S.-supplied drones equipped with infrared surveillance technology to track and capture an alleged Gulf Clan cocaine trafficker wanted for extradition by a federal court in Massachusetts, Colombian authorities said Tuesday.

Norbey Goez Sepúlveda, 48, also known as "El Paisa," "Ñato" and "Cachaco," was arrested in a rural area of Turbo, in Colombia's northwestern Antioquia department.

The operation involved Colombia's National Police, Attorney General's Office and Army, with support from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, according to Colombian authorities.

Goez is wanted by U.S. authorities on charges related to drug trafficking and criminal conspiracy and is subject to an extradition request from a federal court in Massachusetts, Colombian news outlet Caracol Radio reported.

Authorities said drones supplied by the U.S. government played a key role in locating Goez after investigators tracked him through rural areas of Antioquia.

The aircraft were equipped with electro-optical and infrared systems that allow operators to conduct surveillance during the day and at night and detect thermal signatures in low-visibility conditions, according to Caracol.

Investigators accuse Goez of working with the Roberto Vargas Gutiérrez structure of the Gulf Clan, one of Colombia's largest criminal organizations.

Authorities said he helped coordinate the collection and movement of cocaine from the departments of Córdoba and Antioquia's Urabá region before shipments were transported toward Central America and the United States.

Investigators said the organization used high-speed boats to move cocaine through Panama and Mexico before it reached the United States.

Authorities accuse Goez of helping coordinate shipments totaling more than one metric ton of cocaine per month through maritime, land and air routes.

Police said Goez had been involved in criminal activity for more than seven years but maintained a low profile to avoid detection, moving between rural communities and presenting himself as a businessman, farmworker or cattle rancher while limiting his presence on social media and other records.

The operation comes as President Abelardo De La Espriella's government expands security cooperation with Washington.

After meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sept. 8, De La Espriella proposed what he calls "Plan Patriota Siglo XXI," a security modernization initiative that includes cooperation with the United States on drones, counter-drone systems, radar, aircraft, intelligence, cyber defense and special forces.

"Colombia wants to consolidate itself once again as the United States' main hemispheric security partner," De La Espriella said after the meeting, according to the Colombian presidency.

He said Colombia would provide its own resources but would also seek U.S. support to build those capabilities.

The government has also tightened restrictions on imports of drone components after authorities said criminal organizations were obtaining the technology for attacks against Colombian security forces.

Earlier this month, De La Espriella said customs authorities had seized drones intended for criminal groups and announced that imports of drone components would be restricted to designated entry points in Bogotá and Cartagena.

The government said the effort includes cooperation with U.S. Homeland Security Investigations.

Tuesday's arrest also came amid a broader security offensive.

De La Espriella said Colombian forces had arrested 30 people allegedly linked to armed and drug-trafficking organizations during the previous 24 hours, including seven suspected members of the Rodrigo Cadete structure in Caquetá, two alleged National Liberation Army members in Boyacá and 15 alleged members of a criminal network known as Los Fantasmas in Risaralda.

He also reported the seizure of 149 kilograms, or about 328 pounds, of marijuana and the destruction of a cache containing 36 improvised grenades and explosive material in Huila.

The figures were announced by the president and subsequently reported by Colombian media.

Following his arrest, Goez was transferred to the International Affairs Directorate of Colombia's Attorney General's Office while authorities proceed with the extradition process.

U.S. authorities must submit the required documentation through diplomatic channels before the extradition can proceed.

A series of mass protests has gripped France ahead of the French government’s plans to slash some €56 billion from its social spending.

Firefighters, healthcare workers, transport staff and other civil servants took part in a nationwide strike on Tuesday, backed by all of the country’s major public-sector unions. More than 170 marches were planned across France, with demonstrators blocking roads and scuffling with police in Paris, and firefighters setting flares alight atop the iconic July Column at the Place de la Bastille – built to commemorate the overthrow of King Charles X in 1830. French students also clashed with police outside schools across the country.

The protesters’ demands are familiar: higher wages, better working conditions, and more funding for public services. However, while public sector employees have accused President Emmanuel Macron’s government of underfunding and dismantling their departments for years, they argue that their situation has recently been made unbearable by record fuel prices and wages that have failed to keep pace with inflation.

France has raised public sector pay by 5% since Macron took power in 2017, while cumulative inflation has risen 24% in the same time period.

The SNUipp-FSU teachers’ union has claimed that 40% of primary school teachers are on strike, while one in four firefighters have walked off the job, according to government estimates. France’s left-wing CGT union described the day’s strikes as a “black day,” intended to “truly express our anger.”

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is set to unveil €54 billion ($62 billion) worth of cutbacks in his 2027 budget on Thursday. Lecornu denies that he has drafted an “austerity” budget, but left-wing politician Jean-Luc Melenchon, a supporter of the strikes, has said that it would only heighten unrest, and has vowed to undo the budget and cancel government debt if elected president next year.

Macron, who has served two terms and cannot contest April’s election, is currently polling at less than 18% approval, according to an Ifop poll published earlier this month. Although the French president has seen worse approval numbers in other polls, 18% is an historic low in an Ifop survey.

Tuesday’s strikes are compounded by a growing student protest movement. High school students complaining about overcrowded and neglected classrooms have blockaded more than 300 schools in multiple cities, according to media reports.

The students – predominantly black and Middle-Eastern teenagers from deprived suburbs – set dumpsters on fire outside a school in Lille on Monday and clashed with police in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. In some areas, the protests have degenerated into riots, with youths shooting fireworks and engaging in running battles with riot police.

Police arrested 164 students and rioters on Monday, and at least 40 on Tuesday, according to the latest figures from French media.

EU nation reacts to Israel stripping West Bank diplomat’s credentials

The Netherlands on Monday said it had summoned Israeli Ambassador Zvi Aviner Vapni over a decision to revoke the diplomatic status of Dutch representatives at the mission in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen condemned the Israeli decision as an “unnecessary” measure, warning it was bound to have “extremely serious consequences.”The move was announced by his Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa’ar on Sunday, with the top diplomat stripping the Dutch diplomats of their “Israeli-issued diplomatic documentation,” which must be returned within seven days.

The Israeli foreign minister cited the enactment of a Dutch import ban on Israeli goods originating from illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, as well as from the Golan Heights, as the pretext for the latest move.

“If the Netherlands wishes to continue representing its interests with the Palestinians, it may do so from Palestinian Authority territory, rather than from the territory of the State of Israel,” Sa’ar said in a statement, accusing The Hague of pursuing “anti-Israel policies.” Access to the West Bank is only possible via Israel or the border checkpoints it controls.

Given the ever-tightening grip of Israeli security forces and the fact that there have been no operational airports in the Palestinian territories for quite some time, the move makes the work of the Dutch mission to Ramallah impossible and effectively amounts to an expulsion of the diplomats.

Last month, when the import ban was adopted by the Dutch government, West Jerusalem expelled representatives of the Netherlands from Kiryat Gat’s International Support Center for Gaza. “Our message is clear:Those who act against Israel will have no foothold in the region. Israel will not allow measures to be taken against it without a response,” Sa’ar said at the time.

Ties between Israel and the Netherlands, as well as many other EU nations, have gradually worsened in recent years. Israel’s heavy-handed campaign in Gaza, prompted by the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, as well as rapid state-sponsored expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, have impacted relations. While individual members have introduced certain restrictions against Israel, the bloc has failed to provide a unified response to the situation in Palestine, with Brussels repeatedly facing criticism for applying “double standards” in its policies.

An American Private (Allegedly) Shot a UFO in the Korean War

Private First Class Francis P. Wall recounted firing his M1 rifle at a UFO resembling a “jack-o-lantern” and hearing the bullet ricochet off. The UFO was unaffected.

In 1951, about one year into the Korean War, American troops positioned near Chorwon, roughly 60 miles north of Seoul. Soldiers, preparing to bombard a nearby village, noticed something strange in the hills—something Private First Class Francis P. Wall would later describe as objects or lights resembling “jack-o’-lanterns” moving across the mountain. One of the objects even approached the battlefield, forcing the Americans to engage.

According to Wall’s account, artillery couldn’t damage the object, which emitted a brilliant pulsating light and a metallic sound when struck with rifle fire.

Soldiers also reported experiencing a strange physical sensation, with members of the unit becoming ill.

It’s a remarkable story, and one that many modern commentators have cited as a run-in with an unidentified flying object (UFO).

Is it accurate? Unclear. It rests on the recollection of one soldier and describes events that are hard to believe, though not impossible.

The “Jack-o-Lantern” Story, As Recounted by Private Wall

Wall recalled that the strange craft moved toward the village as American artillery was firing. Shells and airbursts exploded near the object, yet it apparently suffered no visible damage.

The object did, however, demonstrate unusual maneuverability, including abrupt movements and sharp turns. The object also appeared orange, but then pivoted toward the American position and changed colors to a bright blue-green pulsating light.

This is about the time the Americans engaged with it.

Wall reportedly asked his commander for permission to fire, and then engaged with his M1 rifle.

According to Wall, bullets struck the object, producing a metallic “ding,” but then fell away. If the account is to believed, it appears the object was physical and not a trick of the light, but hard and metallic.

The object then began moving side to side rapidly. The lights flashed on and off. Then, allegedly, the object fired back.

In a detailed account in a 1987 interview with John P. Timmerman of the Center for UFO Studies, Wall said the object emitted something resembling a pulsed beam or ray, which Wall compared to segments of light from a sweeping searchlight.

When the beam reached Wall, he recounted a burning sensation and a tingling throughout his body. The light caused soldiers to retreat into an underground bunker, where they watched the object hovering overhead through openings and windows.

Then the object departed rapidly at a 45-degree angle. And as suddenly as the encounter began, it ended.

There Were Multiple Unexplained UFO Sightings During the Korean War

Three days after the encounter, the company was evacuated, with some soldiers receiving medical treatment. Wall claimed the men were diagnosed with dysentery and unusually high white-blood-cell counts.

UFO researcher Richard F. Haines, a former NASA research scientist, later suggested the reported symptoms sounded compatible with radiation exposure.

Of course, that is a retrospective interpretation from a UFO researcher without contemporaneous medical records establishing radiation poisoning—so, grain of salt.

Wall’s fantastic account wasn’t the only alleged UFO sighting associated with the Korean War. Other US service members later reported unexplained aerial phenomena.

Of course, “unidentified” and “unexplained” do not mean they were extraterrestrial in origin; and the strange reports were studied by US Army investigators as evidence of new Soviet aviation technology or secret weapons.

To that end, the US Air Force investigated UFO reports under Project Blue Book, from 1952 until 1969.

Of the 12,618 sightings investigated during that period, most could predictably be explained as weather phenomena or mistaken aircraft sightings. However, 701 remained unidentified by the time the project ended.

Wall’s sighting occurred just before the Blue Book era, so it didn’t receive the formal Blue Book treatment. But it speaks to the type of incident that would warrant a closer look, alien or not.

EU states push farm aid cuts to fund military buildup

The EU’s next budget should be cut byhundreds of billions of euros and shift funding away from agricultural subsidies and towards military spending, Germany and five other member states have demanded, threatening to block a deal unless Brussels agrees to the reductions.

The ultimatum was set out in a letter, seen by the Financial Times, to Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency and is overseeing the budget negotiations.

It was signed by the leaders of Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Austria and Finland, which argued the EU must spend more on defense and other new priorities while reducing the European Commission’s proposed €2 trillion budget for 2028–2034.

The budget “must be fundamentally reformed. We must make choices,” the leaders wrote, according to the Financial Times. A diplomat from one of the six countries told the newspaperthere would be no agreement this year unless spending was cut.

Agriculture and support for poorer regions have historically accounted for about two-thirds of the EU budget. However, the six countries are demanding that those resources be redirected toward defense, competitiveness and innovation, adding that every area of spending must contribute to the proposed cuts.

The EU’s seven-year budget requires unanimous approval from all 27 member states. However, 17 others, including Spain and Italy, have opposed the German-led group’s demands and have demanded that farm and regional funding be increased.

Berlin’s defense push comes as part of a wider military buildup across Europe,driven by unsubstantiated claims that Russia could attack NATO countries, which Moscow has repeatedly rejected.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged to build the strongest conventional army in Europe, while his government has expanded the armed forces and is considering a return to conscription, despite tens of thousands of Germans vehemently opposing the idea.

The prospect of an imminent Russian attack has been challenged even within the six-country group. Finnish President Alexander Stubb said last week that Helsinki’s intelligence sees “no imminent military threat” from Moscow and he has urged European leaders to remain calm.

Moscow has repeatedly stressed that it has no reason or intention to attack Europe. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that claims to the contrary are “nonsense” that is meant to ramp up anti-Russian hysteria and justify inflated military budgets and continued spending on Ukraine.

Addressing the UN General Assembly last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that the sheer scale of Europe’s military buildup could itself lead to a confrontation. He also accused the EU’s ruling elites of being infected with “the virus of racial superiority” and espousing extremist Russophobic ideas, while noting that Berlin’s attempts to achieve military primacy on the continent is an attempt to create a “Fourth Reich.”

California has become the second US state to recognize the major Muslim festivals of Eid as official holidays, according to local authorities.

The state is home to one of the country’s largest Muslim communities, estimated at up to one million people.

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the measure into law over the weekend, adding Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to California’s list of state holidays.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, while Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is observed during the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Both holidays typically begin with communal prayers and are celebrated with gatherings of family and friends.

The measure was introduced by California lawmaker Matt Haney and backed by Muslim community groups. Haney said recognizing Eid would allow people to celebrate with their families without being forced to make “unnecessary sacrifices.”

Under the new law, workers do not automatically receive a paid day off, nor are government offices, courts, schools, or businesses required to close. State employees can use existing leave to observe Eid, while public schools and community colleges can close under agreements reached with employees.

The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights group that co-sponsored the measure, welcomed its signing, saying Muslims had for decades faced a “difficult choice” between observing their faith and meeting work or academic obligations.

Washington became the first US state to recognize both Eid holidays in 2025, although its law likewise did not make them mandatory paid days off. Eid has long been observed locally elsewhere in the country, with New York City public schools adding both festivals to their calendar in 2015.

The Muslim population in the US has more than doubled in less than two decades, rising from an estimated 2.4 million in 2007 to around 5.5 million this year, according to the Pew Research Center.

‘UFO or alien mothership?’ Mysterious streak in Starship Flight 14 livestream sparks wild theories

Starship flight successfully deployed 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites

SpaceX Starship Flight 14 achieved a milestone after successfully reaching orbit for the first time and deploying all 26 V3 Starlink satellites in a landmark launch.

But this is not the only highlight of the mission. A mysterious object was also spotted during SpaceX’s historic flight livestreaming which not only left the viewers scrambling for answers but also prompted wild UFO theories online.

Just over eight minutes into the stream, sharp-eyed viewers caught a mysterious, slightly curved light hovering in the background.

Screenshots instantly flooded X. "They just livestreamed what looks like a ‘UFO mothership’ trailing Starship over Texas," posted one user, as another chimed in, "I think we all just saw a UFO live-streamed."

Another one commented, “Hey SpaceX what is this city sized craft orbiting the horizon?”

“Remember what Elon Musk said about Aliens? He has said that with thousands of SpaceX satellites he would know if aliens were here, and that he would post the proof on X. The object sat on his own feed,” One user wrote.

Michael Salla, author of the Secret Space Programs Book series also commented, "The first Starship sent into Earth orbit was trailed by a large UFO that some claim is a mothership.

Given the importance of SpaceX rockets for the open-source expansion of space programs, the UFO may be part of the Solar Warden/United Earth Space Command welcoming its little brother to cislunar space."

“That object is moving real fast relative to Starship. Doesn't seem like debris from the vehicle like the ice particles, what could this possibly be I wonder,” Another wondered.

Experts and viewers note there is no verified evidence of extraterrestrial life or technology as the shape is likely a conventional phenomenon such as rocket exhaust expanding in the thin upper atmosphere, debris, or staging material.

One user wrote, "It's likely a hunk of ice that broke off the side of the ship or some propellant that leaked out the engines during the cutoff that froze in space.”

However, neither SpaceX nor NASA commented on this viral footage. But, NASA praised SpaceX for the launch on X: “Gorgeous launch, getting the ship to orbit and managing every step in a safe, responsible, and especially inspirational way.”
