Charles James Kirk (October 14, 1993 – September 10, 2025) was an American right-wing political activist, author, and media personality. He co-founded the conservative organization Turning Point USA (TPUSA) in 2012 and was its executive director. He was the chief executive officer (CEO) of Turning Point Action (TPAction) and a member of the Council for National Policy (CNP). The Washington Post described him as "one of the most prominent voices on the right" in his later years.[2]

 

Kirk was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs of Arlington Heights and Prospect Heights, Illinois. In addition to Santorum's faith, opposition to women’s abortion rights, and hawkish foreign policy leanings, the possibility of defeating incumbent President Barack Obama was a major component of Friess's decision to back Santorum's campaign.[27] Friess reportedly considered major contributions to American Crossroads, the super PAC founded by Republican National Committee chair Ed Gillespie and formerGeorge W. Bush White House strategist Karl Rove.[28][29]

 

Friess also donated $100,000 to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to help defeat the Democrats' recall effort in 2011. He reportedly invested more than $3 million in conservative commentatorTucker Carlson'sThe Daily Caller website.[22] At one of the semi-annual, private seminars held by the Koch brothers in June 2011, Friess was recognized for his donation exceeding $1 million to theKochs'political activities.[30]

 

While being interviewed by NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell regarding contraception, Friess said, "And this contraceptive thing, my gosh, it's so – it's such – inexpensive, you know, back in my days, they used Bayer Aspirin for contraception. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn't that costly."[25][31] Friess later apologized for the comment. [32]

 

Friess was also an advisor to Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization to which he donated seed money.[33]

 

In October 2017, Friess said he was exploring a possible candidacy for the Senate challenging Wyoming Senator John Barrasso for the Republican nomination,[34] at the request ofSteve Bannon.[35] However, in April 2018, he instead decided to enter the crowded Republican field to replace term-limited Governor Matt Mead. Friess was defeated in the primary, coming in second to State Treasurer Mark Gordon by 38,951 votes (33%) to 29,842 (25.3%).[35]

Arp 78: Peculiar Galaxy in Aries

 

Explanation: Peculiar spiral galaxy Arp 78 is found within the boundaries of the head strong constellation Aries. Some 100 million light-years beyond the stars and nebulae of our Milky Way galaxy, the island universe is an enormous 200,000 light-years across. Also known as NGC 772, it sports a prominent, outer spiral arm in this detailed cosmic portrait. Tracking along sweeping dust lanes and lined with young blue star clusters, Arp 78's overdeveloped spiral arm is pumped-up by galactic-scale gravitational tides. Interactions with its brightest companion galaxy, the more compact NGC 770 seen directly below the larger spiral, are likely responsible. Embedded in faint star streams revealed in the deep telescopic exposure, NGC 770's fuzzy, elliptical appearance contrasts nicely with spiky foreground Milky Way stars.

What We Know About The CIA's Alleged Secret Time Travel Program

In October of 1943, an alleged experiment took place at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard that opened the proverbial door to time travel (via Military.com). According to legend, the USS Eldridge (DE 173) — a Cannon-class battleship used primarily to hunt and destroy enemy submarines — left our timeline in an experiment in invisibility gone wrong, per USS Slater. Part of a CIA research project known as Project Rainbow, the alleged incident with the USS Eldridge at the Philadelphia Naval Yard has become unofficially known as "the Philadelphia Experiment," per The Guardian.

 

In an effort to put an end to World War II, the story says that the U.S. military began experimenting with ways to end the dragging world war in the quickest, most efficient manner. One of the ideas floating around was the idea of cloaking — or making invisible to radar — battleships. Using a device called a "time zero generator," the military attempted to do just that, per The Guardian. What allegedly happened, however, was completely unexpected.

 

On October 28, 1943, the switch was allegedly thrown on the time zero generator. Eyewitness' claim to have seen the USS Eldridge suddenly begin to glow in a green-blue haze that surrounded the vessel (via Military.com). The Eldridge began to fade, leaving just the outline of the ship remaining. And with that, the ship blinked out of existence, according to The Guardian. Time slowly ticked by. No one knew exactly what happened to the ship or where it went. After a long 20 minutes, the Eldridge reappeared, but with horrifying results. Much of the vessel was on fire, members of the crew — who allegedly left our reality along with the ship — were found insane. And those were the lucky ones. Reports swirl that many crew members of the Eldridge had "fused" with the ship upon its return to our reality; torsos, limbs, and other miscellaneous body parts were found amalgamated into the ship's steel hull.

 

According to the surviving members of the ship's crew, during the vessel's alleged 20-minute disappearance, the ship seemingly re-appeared 600 miles away in Newport News, located in Virginia. Of course, The Guardian calls the story "hokum" concocted by UFO enthusiast Carl Allen. And with no real concrete proof of the event ever taking place, the U.S. Navy outright denies the Philadelphia Experiment ever happened. 

 

Nevertheless, the USS Eldridge did exist — sold off to Greece in 1951 and finally decommissioned and sold for scrap in the '90s — and Project Rainbow did occur. D.C. Councilmember Trayon White said the jury in his federal bribery trial was split 9-3 in favor of acquitting him before the court declared a mistrial.

 

What we know:

 

White shared the information on social media and cited his legal team Tuesday, following four days of jury deliberations in his trial.

 

White was charged with a single count of bribery following allegations that he accepted over $150,000 to use his official position to extend government contracts for a local businessman.

 

The government’s key witness was businessman turned FBI informant, Allieu Kamara.

 

Kamara discreetly recorded White taking envelopes of cash on several occasions and testified that he drafted an agreement that would have yielded White up to $156,000. White did not take the stand in his own defense during the trial.

 

Despite the mistrial, federal prosecutors said they intend to move forward with a new trial.

 

"We have video showing piles of cash being given to a D.C. councilmember as part of a $156,000 bribe," U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro said in a statement. "Rest assured that we will retry this case and every corruption case to verdict."

 

Pirro did not provide a timeline for when the case will be retried.

 

Ahead of the trial, White was stripped of certain council responsibilities, including committee memberships and leadership roles.Following the mistrial, White said he plans to return to work on the council.

Looks like Ken Paxton (R-TX) has finally had enough of President Donald Trump’s attacks on his looks.

 

The Senate candidate, involved in a tense Senate race with Democrat James Talarico, was caught on leaked audioadmitting that Trump’s midterm convention in the Lone Star State hurt him more than it helped.

 

“Do you feel like he’s a little bit of a drag?” Paxton is asked in the clip obtained by The New York Times.

 

“So to be honest with you, the numbers — when we did that convention — it dropped our numbers,” Paxton replied. “Everybody’s numbers dropped. Right now, yeah, not good.”

 

The Times was given the audio by an attendee at a recent fundraiser, who wished to remain anonymous. The source told the paper that he’s opposed to Paxton’s candidacy.

 

During the convention earlier this month, Trump gave a speech in which he urged Texans to vote for Paxton, though he “may not be the best-looking guy.”

 

Paxton emerged as the Republican candidate in May after securing the endorsement of Trump, who snubbed incumbent John Cornyn.

 

Trump intervened in the race over the objections of many in the party establishment — who worried Paxton’s various corruption and infidelity scandals would plague him in the general election, and put a safe Senate seat in play.

 

And those fears seem to be playing out. Despite the president’s backing, Paxton has failed to hold off Talarico in recent polls, putting Republicans at risk of losing a Senate race in reliably-red Texas for the first time in 38 years.

 

Even legendary GOP strategist Karl Rove has said that Paxton’s time “is running out!”

 

Rove added, “If the president wants to have Paxton win, he needs to be tossing a lot of money Paxton’s way.”

Good news! The Draconid meteor shower peaks under almost moonless skies on Oct. 8-9.

 

The Draconid meteor shower will peak overnight on Oct. 8-9, 2026. Skywatchers can look forward to excellent viewing conditions (weather permitting) this year.

The annual shower is active from Oct. 6 to Oct. 10, with the peak occurring under almost completely moonless skies, a welcome change from 2025 when a bright full moon washed out most of the meteors.

 

The Draconids are typically a modest meteor shower, with a zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) of around five meteors per hour under ideal conditions.

No enhanced activity is currently predicted for 2026, though the shower is notoriously unpredictable and has produced spectacular meteor storms in the past.

 

The Draconids occur when Earth travels through a trail of debris left by Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner.

This comet, composed of ice and rocky fragments, orbits the sun every 6.6 years. As Earth encounters this debris, the particles burn up in our atmosphere, creating the meteor shower.

 

In recent years, the Draconids have been relatively quiet, producing few meteors and no notable outbursts of activity — a far cry from the showers of old, when the Draconids produced some of the most impressive meteor showers of the 20th Century in 1933 and 1946.

During these meteor storms, thousands of meteors were spotted every hour, according to the U.K. meteor network.

 

Outbursts like those, and lesser ones in 1926, 1952, 1985, 1998 and 2011, seem "to occur only when the Earth passes just inside Comet Giacobini-Zinner's orbit shortly after the comet itself has gone by," wrote Space.com skywatching columnist Joe Rao.

The Draconids are sometimes called the Giacobinids, after French astronomer Michel Giacobini who discovered the comet 21 P/Giacobini-Zinner, according to Royal Museums Greenwich.

 

Meteor showers are named after the constellation from which the meteors appear to emanate. From Earth's perspective, the Draconids appear to come approximately from the direction of the constellation Draco, the dragon.

Despite its size and designation as the eighth-largest constellation, Draco is not especially conspicuous. The name is derived from the Latin term "draco," meaning "huge serpent," and the constellation snakes its way through the northern sky.

 

When is the best time to view the Draconid meteor shower?

The Draconids are a little different from many meteor showers, which are often best viewed in the early hours of the morning.

The best time to start looking for the Draconids is in the evening after nightfall, when the shower's radiant — the constellation Draco — is high in the sky.

In 2026, the shower is expected to peak at around 9 p.m. EDT on Oct. 8 (0100 GMT on Oct. 9), according to Earth Sky, with excellent viewing conditions thanks to an almost moonless sky. The new moon arrives on Oct. 10.

Although the peak is typically your best chance of spotting Draconid meteors, you may still be able to catch the occasional shooting star between Oct. 6 and Oct. 10.

 

What causes the Draconid meteor shower?

World airline standard wifi is quickly moving to Starlink. It’s the fastest in the sky today by a wide margin, available and quick to install. Customers love it – there’s basically no latency. You enter a website and it comes up That’s an advantage of low earth orbit satellites.

 

Delta is on the verge of getting left behind, as United and Southwest quickly move to complete installation on their fleets, and American and Alaska will soon offer it on a true critical mass of aircraft. Unfortunately, Delta chose Amazon for their low earth orbit satellite wifi.

 

And CEO Ed Bastian is trashing Elon Musk as he makes excuses for his airline’s bungled plan to get truly fast wifi in their planes.

 

• Amazon’s Leo service won’t even go into beta until next year – United and Southwest will be done with their rollouts before Delta even starts installation. (But Delta only even plans to do about half their fleet.)

• It’s untested – we don’t yet know how it will perform

• But it’s cheaper, and Delta could get a better financial deal bundling wifi with Amazon Studios content and cloud services.

• Plus Amazon would allow their system to be gated by Delta’s Sync portal and Starlink reportedly wouldn’t.

 

According to Delta CEO Ed Bastian, though, they chose not to go with Starlink because they didn’t want to do business with Elon Musk. That’s reporting by aviation watchdog JonNYC about Bastian’s remarks to employees at two internal events.

 

“We do not want to be with Elon Musk. Trust me.”

 

Side note: at a different, earlier event, Ed also said that [Delta] did test with starlink, but did not want to partner with Elon. “If you know his reputation, it’s all true what they say about him.”

 

Among other carriers, Starlink is being rolled out by IAG airlines (e.g. Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia); Lufthansa Group airlines (e.g. Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways); Hanjin Group carriers (Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jin Air, Air Busan, Air Seoul); Air France, Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines; American Airlines; Emirates; flydubai; Gulf Air; Qatar Airways; SAS; Virgin Atlantic; Southwest Airlines; WestJet; ZIPAIR. Bastian also says that Delta will represent 70% of the airline industry’s profits.

 

For 2025, they were about 55% of profit. The 20% market share figure he cites is roughly correct.

 

In July Bastian estimated that Delta would generate 60% of second quarter industry profits, before competitors reported. He likes to make estimates! And though Delta profit will be impacted by higher fuel expense, implicitly he’s saying that the rest of the industry will suffer more than Delta because he’s projecting that their share of profits are growing.

NASA Checks Roman Guidance System, Takes First Coronagraph Observation

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope’s fine-guidance system, which allows the observatory to lock very steadily onto its targets during observations, passed a spate of tests from Sept. 15 to 21.

Then on Sept. 22, the mission’s Coronagraph Instrument opened its eyes to cosmic light for the very first time.

 

The team assigned a small part of each of the 18 detectors in Roman’s primary instrument, the Wide Field Instrument, to rapidly observe a separate guide star — stars with well-known positions used as reference points.

When Roman’s attitude control system gets the spacecraft pointed in the right direction, information from the fine-guidance system then helps hold it steady throughout each observation so it doesn’t drift off target.

Using only the attitude control system, Roman’s images wouldn’t be as crisp.

 

“Every Roman observation relies on its ability to stay precisely pointed at the correct region of space long enough to collect an image, which can take from minutes to hours for a deep exposure,” said Begoña Vila, Roman’s guiding instrument systems lead at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“The fine-guidance system reports the positions of the guide stars about four times each second to the attitude control system, which can move the observatory a tiny amount to counter any drift as needed.

Our tests confirmed that we are able to keep the observatory very stable for science operations: better than 1/100,000 of a degree for half an hour at a time for Wide Field Instrument observations or for eight hours at a time for Coronagraph Instrument observations, which take much longer. This was a very exciting moment for the team.”

 

Roman’s current stability is roughly equivalent to focusing a laser beam on a U.S. dime from about 150 miles (about 240 kilometers) away.

The team aims to improve this even further by tuning the guidance system, boosting the distance in the analogy to about 230 miles (370 kilometers).

Roman also has a new type of guiding that hasn’t been attempted before.

“Roman doesn’t have a separate guider instrument, like other space telescopes do,” Vila said. “Instead of tracking only a star’s point-like appearance, it will guide on detailed wavelength patterns called spectra.

Because Roman is already equipped to measure spectra for science, it can use that same information to precisely position the telescope. We are looking forward to validating this spectral guiding mode in the coming weeks.”

 

Coronagraph captures first glimmer

Next, on Sept. 22 and 27, the team tested out the fine-guidance system with the Coronagraph Instrument, which will demonstrate cutting-edge technology to block starlight and view planets and dusty disks around nearby stars.

“Roman’s coronagraph also has its own internal stability process, making it much more stable even than the Wide Field Instrument,” Vila said.

That’s critical because even tiny vibrations or pointing errors could let starlight leak through, washing out the faint planets scientists are trying to see.

 

The coronagraph woke up on Sept. 1 and stretched its digital, electronic, and mechanical “limbs” mid-month.

Once the team confirmed that the fine-guidance system was holding the Coronagraph Instrument steady, scientists adjusted the focus so it could take its first bleary-eyed look at space that will help scientists fine-tune the instrument’s view.

“This observation confirms that the instrument can produce a focused image,” said Vanessa Bailey, a Roman Coronagraph Instrument scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

“It’s a very limited test that kicks off a methodical process of increasingly complex tasks that help us prepare for the instrument’s future observations.”

 

For this step, the Coronagraph Instrument captured a faint star in a neighboring galaxy called the Large Magellanic Cloud, with “noise” seeping through because the detectors have been kept at a warmer temperature than they will ultimately operate.

That helps to ensure contamination does not stick to the detectors.

 

“We were kicking the tires, making sure light goes through the system,” Bailey said. “The second step, on Sunday, was an observation that confirmed our pointing.

The team cooled the detectors down for better sensitivity, and we observed a new location in the Large Magellanic Cloud where we expected to see many stars in a single image. And we did! We’re breathing a sigh of relief!”

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand wore a hijab during a visit last week to a Bronx mosque where the powerful New York Democrat sat alongside a cleric who once celebrated Hamas for "causing so much trouble for the Jews"and has hailed Osama bin Laden's spiritual mentor.

 

Gillibrand, who chairs the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, appeared at the Bronx Muslim Center, located in New York City's "Little Yemen," on Sept. 21, according to photos posted by the center's outreach director. The photos show Gillibrand wearing a pink headscarf and seated next to Hamud Alsilwi, a Yemeni cleric who has led the Bronx Muslim Center since 1998. A banner soliciting donations for the center's new 32,000-square-foot mosque is seen in the photos that prominently featured the senator.

 

The Bronx mosque is a branch of the Muslim American Society,which federal prosecutors have described as an "overt arm" of the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States.

 

Alsilwi has praised Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood and hailed Sheikh Abdul Majeed al-Zindani, an influential Islamic scholar designated as a terrorist over his ties to bin Laden.

 

‘The Muslim Brotherhood came to power in Palestine, and they harmed no one except the Jews and Israel," Alsilwi wrote in October 2016, according to an English translation of his post.

 

In social media posts in January 2016, Alsilwi praised Hamas founder Ahmed Yassin—who was killed in an Israeli airstrike after being linked to multiple murders—for "causing so much trouble for the Jews in Palestine," the Middle East Forum reported in 2024, after Rep. Ritchie Torres (D., N.Y.) secured $1 million in earmarks for the Bronx Muslim Center.

 

Alsilwi mourned al-Zindani after his death in April 2024, posting numerous photos and videos of the cleric, referring to him as an "eminent scholar" and praying, "O God, grant him spacious gardens in Paradise."

 

The U.S. government designated al-Zindani a terrorist in 2004 over his position as spiritual adviser to bin Laden and for allegedly recruiting al Qaeda members and aiding "the purchase of weapons on behalf of al-Qaeda and other terrorists."

 

Gillibrand has not promoted her Bronx mosque visit on social media or her Senate website, though she posted footage from other events she attended the same day in East Harlem and the Bronx. Those photos show Gillibrand wearing the same suit as the one at the Bronx Muslim Center, sans hijab.

"It was an honor to welcome U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to Little Yemen today and have her spend time directly with members of our community," wrote Yahay Obeid, the mosque's director of outreach.

 

Other prominent New York lawmakers have faced criticism for wearing hijabs. President Donald Trump and New York gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman excoriated Gov. Kathy Hochul (D.) last month for donning a hijab at an event for the Islamic Cultural Center of Manhattan's Upper East Side.

"Hijab Hochul. Kathy's Latest Costume: Whatever the Audience Wants,"wrote Blakeman.

 

Trump called Hochul the "Worst Governor in the Country," and said she "wears the hijab" to "get the Arab Vote."

 

Conservatives and human rights activists blasted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) earlier this year for sporting a hijab at an outdoor Eid event. Masih Alinejad, an Iranian dissident, accused the "Squad" leader of hypocrisy for wearing the hijab while claiming "to fight for women's self-determination."

South Carolina Mom Allegedly Stabs Her Two Kids Over 50 Times, Arrested and Taken for Mental Health Evaluation

 

Taylor Gosnell, 35, was arrested after allegedly attacking her children with a knife and then leaving them home alone.

 

Deputies who responded to the scene after one of the children called their grandmother found Gosnell’s children, ages 3 and 6, alive but suffering from severe stab wounds.

Biloxi native Christine Powell has served at the Gulf Coast center and other NASA locations since 1995 after first beginning as an intern in 1991. She was promoted from deputy director to the director position this June.

 

Powell is a 1995 MSU electrical engineering graduate. As director, she is responsible for implementing NASA’s mission in rocket propulsion testing and developing and maintaining NASA’s world-class rocket propulsion test facilities.

 

The Stennis Space Center also is home to more than 50 federal, state, academic and private organizations and numerous technology-based companies.

 

MSU has had a longtime Stennis Center presence through its Science and Technology Center.

Twelve people, most of whom are students, have been injured in a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s Bryansk Region, acting Governor Egor Kovalchuk has said.

 

The UAV incursion targeted the city of Trubchevsk, sitting on the Desna River in the southern part of the region, not far from the border with Ukraine, Kovalchuk wrote in a post on social media on Wednesday.

 

“Horrific attack on civilians in Trubchevsk; there are children among the wounded,” he said.

 

At least seven of those injured were students, with one of the victims being in serious condition, according to the acting governor.

 

On Monday, Ukrainian drone strikes damaged a railway bridge and tracks at three locations in Bryansk Region, causing several trains to derail.

 

Part of a bridge collapsed on the Dyatkovo-Lyudinovo rail section, sending ten cars off the tracks, according to Kovalchuk. A separate strike in Unecha District derailed another 18 empty freight cars, A third attack damaged tracks in Navlya District, but did not disrupt train traffic or cause injuries.

 

Moscow has accused Kiev of deliberately targeting civilians with long-range drones in an attempt to compensate for setbacks on the battlefield, where Russian forces have continued to advance.

 

One of the deadliest such strikes came in May when several waves of Ukrainian UAVs hit a student dormitory in the Donbass city of Starobelsk, killing 21 people, mostly young women.

Pardoned mechanic Matt Geouge has built a device that blocks vehicles from spying on their drivers, because in 2018 his fiancée realized investigators were following her. Now he braces for steep opposition from manufacturers as he unveils his new product.

 

Matt Geouge is building a device that blocks vehicles from spying on their drivers, because in 2018 his fiancée noticed grey Toyota Tacomas were following her.

 

Geouge had started a smalltime diesel operation in his mother’s garage in Hendersonville, North Carolina, his senior year of high school. As emissions systems on diesel trucks grew more constraining throughout the early 2000s, Geouge started writing “delete” software tunes that let trucks disobey the systems and regain their horsepower.

 

That got farmers’ and truckers’ rigs out of the emissions handicap, or “limp” mode. It also snowballed into a multi-million-dollar business and earned widespread renown for Geouge, at least in Ford aftermarket circles.

 

But Geouge’s work also landed him in the federal government’s crosshairs because deleting runs afoul of federal emissions laws.

In late autumn 2019, Geouge spent 20 hours of garage time dismantling and scouring his 2017 F350 for a GPS tracking device.

 

He found none.

 

But he found the “black box” telematics modem – standard in newer-model vehicles – the satellite radio antenna, and the GPS hardware. He ripped them out.

On July 3 of this year, President Donald Trump pardoned Geouge and eight other diesel techs.

To Geouge, another injustice remained: Modern cars spy on their drivers.

 

Newer model vehicles contain black box telematics devices, GPS tracking, smartphone integration systems, and other infotainment systems that lift users’ data.

 

For example, cars can watch their drivers with cameras, including for fatigue and distraction. Numerous newer models have in-cabin microphones.

 

Audi’s privacy statement for model years 2019 and newer says the car system can disclose the driver’s data “to third parties for their own marketing purposes.” The company may disclose “information about you and your vehicle” to law enforcement or others when it has reason to believe someone is being harmed, the agreement says.

 

A privacy notice by FCA US, the parent company to Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, and Fiat, says the company may collect information from mobile devices and may track the driver “to provide tailored services.”

 

It also may collect telematics information through the vehicle itself “that concern your vehicle and driving patterns,” and under a broad definition of user consent, share that data with third parties or insurance companies.

 

Satellite radio company Sirius XM’s privacy agreement says it will, as the law and user allow, sell or share sensitive personal data, precise geolocation and other data to targeted advertising entities and analytics providers.

 

These realities superimposed on the Geouge couple’s own experiences put them in survival mode, Jackson said.

 

Then that dawned into the realization others are facing the same dystopia, she added.

 

Geouge has now launched a new business, Spartan Countermeasures, and is in the beta-testing phase of his new telematics and data router. He cast the project as a welcome reset: this product is legal.

 

“We built it because we realized that if an advanced technical mind like Matt’s didn’t engineer a physical firewall to stop the tracking, nobody would or even could,” Jackson said.

Geouge filed for a patent in March 2025, to build and market a hardware device that acts like a train track directional switch. Wired on one end through the auxiliary switch, the device’s other end links to the black box and other data-transmitting devices and lets them operate as normal.

 

But when the user switches the device to “off,” it reroutes the radio frequency signals into a ground plane on a circuit board instead, said Geouge. It grounds the antenna circuit to his circuit board instead of the atmosphere from which it’s trying to read the circuit, he added.

Trump and US tech giants sign pact to stop AI from going rogue

 

Google, OpenAI, Meta, xAI, Anthropic and Nvidia have agreed to introduce new controls and independent audits

 

The heads of six top US-based AI companies signed a pledge at the White House on Tuesday to introduce stronger controls to ensure that their technology does not go rogue.

 

The document, titled the White House Accord on Super Intelligence – Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities, was signed by US President Donald Trump, as well as Google’s Sundar Pichai, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI’s Greg Brockman, xAI’s Elon Musk and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang.

 

The signatories agreed that every company developing advanced artificial intelligence models should have “robust internal processes and controls to ensure that their technology behaves as intended and that any issues are promptly identified and resolved.”

 

The companies pledged to ensure that their models “do not hack or access technical systems in unintended ways” and said they would “empower an internal team to ensure all of the controls, monitoring, and detection are operating as intended, and that any issues are remediated.”

 

They also pledged to allow independent external audits of their safeguards and designate “an independent committee of the board of directors” to evaluate compliance.

The National Pulse Editor-in-Chief Raheem Kassam has warned on Stephen K. Bannon’s War Room show that Britain is now struggling with a deeply embedded “fifth column,” arguing that mass migration, restrictions on speech, and a two-tier justice system have left many Britons afraid to openly challenge the transformation of their communities.

 

Kassam said there is “multi-tiered policing and multi-tiered justice going on in the United Kingdom,” adding that the issue extends beyond the preferential treatment of Islam and minorities to “how white people are being treated as second-class citizens in their own home nations at the moment.” Complaints against “two-tier policing” have become a growing political controversy in Britain in recent years.Kassam argued that Britain’s speech laws also contribute to an atmosphere in which people think twice before discussing immigration, Islam, or some political leaders in a negative way. “It is one of the most stifling environments to speak that I’ve ever experienced,” he said, explaining that he is “certainly aware” that something he writes could potentially be construed in a way that results in criminal prosecution while he is in England.Those concerns exist against a real legal backdrop: Britain’s Malicious Communications Act and Communications Act criminalize certain communications deemed offensive. Ukraine’s NATO-donated F-16 fleet is out of commission more often than it engages Russian drones, The Wall Street Journal has claimed.

The American-produced fighter jets were touted as the latest “gamechanger” weapon in Kiev’s conflict with Russia, a tool that will help “achieve goals outside of Ukraine,” as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said when the first batch was set to arrive in the summer of 2024.

 

However, a key EU member in the European-led scheme cannot keep up with necessary maintenance of the fleet, according to the newspaper.

 

What is the F-16 initiative?

The plan was launched in 2023, as Ukraine’s fleet of Soviet-built military aircraft was dwindling. Pro-Kiev propaganda implied that the US-made multirole jets would help Ukrainian forces challenge Russia’s air dominance over the front line. But it was hardly a secret that they would be kept far away from Russian SAMs and fighter jets and only engage long-range drones and cruise missiles.

 

Donor nations announced they were prepared to spend years training Ukrainian pilots, refurbishing the aircraft they were willing to spare, and happily signing deals for modern replacements to bolster their own militaries –the F-16 initiative was effectively a NATO-backed pyramid schemeallowing everyone to spend big and upgrade their air forces.

 

Ukraine has since received about 40 jets, roughly half of what the donors pledged, and lost several of them during combat missions, reportedly after corners were cut for expediency during training courses. It is now facing winterwith an acute shortage of air defense systems.

 

What’s the problem?

Belgium’s Sabena Aerospace Engineering, awarded a $235.5 million contract for maintenance of Ukraine’s F-16 fleet, is not keeping up with the demand, according to the Wall Street Journal editorial board.

 

An inspection that normally takes two to six weeks lasts “as long as 40 weeks in Belgium,” retired US Navy Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery said. Another Western source said more than half of Ukrainian jets are now in maintenance limbo, with the rest set to become grounded by the end of the year.

 

Was the issue unexpected?

Media reports saying that theUkrainian F-16 fleet is being overworkedsurfaced as early as July, as Kiev’s shortage of ground-launched interceptor missiles became more acute. There were also indicators pointing to a bottleneck in Belgium.

 

In April, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation reported that not one of the six F-16s that Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store pledged to Ukraine in 2023 had been delivered. Four of them were not airworthy to begin with, but the two others were previously used to train Ukrainian pilots in Denmark.

 

The six jets were stuck at a Sabena workshop in Belgium due to “significant capacity problems,” the report said.

Senate Votes Down Stock Trading Ban #548, H.R.7008, Stop Insider Trading Act.

 

Legislation aiming to ban members of Congress from insider trading failed to meet the necessary 60-vote threshold Wednesday after Democrats voted against it.

 

The Stop Insider Trading Act would generally prohibit members of Congress, their spouses and children from purchasing new individual stocks, require public notice before they sell stocks and ban them from purchasing covered investments, which are publicly traded companies or comparable economic interests. The bill will not reach a final vote after failing the procedural vote.

 

The bill would allow members of Congress to hold onto their existing holdings and sales of those existing holdings require between seven and 14 days of public notice.

 

Democrats opposed the insider trading bill, which included provisions from the Safeguard America Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Tuesday that the bill was a “fraud” and that Republicans were only pretending to care about insider trading.

 

“All of a sudden, the GOP is pretending to care about stock trading,” Schumer said during a press gaggle attended by the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Last July, the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee advanced a strong bipartisan bill to ban congressional stock trading. Republicans abandoned this effort. Now they watered down the ban and created loophole after loophole in this sham legislation. Let’s be clear, this bill does not ban stock trading.”

 

House Democrats argued the provision was a “poison pill” and that the bill did not go far enough. They argued it did not go far enough because it allowed members to keep shares and did not prohibit the president, vice president or cabinet members from trading.

 

“It doesn’t actually prohibit members from trading stock,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said. “And of course, it didn’t include the president, the vice president and the cabinet. Which is extraordinary, given that during Donald Trump’s first year as president, he’s traded more stocks than every other member of Congress combined.”

Is Ukraine getting more jets?There were delays in deliveries as well.

 

Belgium promised in 2024 to transfer 30 aircraft set to be phased out by its air force, which was expecting F-35 replacements. Then-Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder said Ukraine would start receiving the old jets “as soon as the F-35s arrive on Belgian soil,” but no transfers have been reported since.

 

Most of the aircraft that Kiev did get reportedly came from the Netherlands and Denmark, the co-leaders of the F-16 initiative.

 

Why does Ukraine have air defense problems?

A shortage of Western weapons partially caused Ukraine’s current situation.

When this summer Vladimir Zelensky announced a 40-day “pressure campaign” of long-rage strikes on refineries, civilian ships, and commercial warehouses, his team reportedly hoped that images of smoke-plumes stretching over big Russian cities would support his bid to receive more Patriot missile interceptors from the limited US stockpile.

 

If true, the plan backfired. NATO nations are scrambling to provide what Kiev wants, while the economic damage caused by Russian retaliation is mounting. And Ukraine already has a $27 billion military budget hole that European donors are struggling to fill.

 

Ukrainian forces previously learned that Western arms gifts come with caveats. Donated NATO artillery systems lacked interoperability and were described as a “zoo” by troops. Much-hyped NATO battle tanks turned out to be mostly useless in drone-driven warfare and had to be kept away from the front line.

Zelensky puts on a brave face talking about the dire situation. Last week he claimed Ukraine had successfully tested four new interceptor drones designed to shoot down faster-moving jet UAVs – the kind of targets the WSJ claimed F-16s are well-suited to take down.

 

But an earlier Reuters report said trials in July “did not go to plan” as the prototypes lost control and “crashed into nearby fields and forests.”

 

Ukrainian opposition lawmaker Sergey Rakhmanin, who sits on the national defense committee, has said Kiev missed Russia’s rapid development of jet kamikaze drones. He said Ukrainian interceptors cost up to $100,000 apiece and that scaling up production would require too much time, even if funding becomes available.

ISRAEL CRAFTED U.S. INFLUENCE OPERATION WITH THE GOAL OF AVOIDING FARA

 

A leaked 2018 ministry memo proposed a U.S. nonprofit with Israeli money, a “control mechanism,” and oral coordination — but no foreign-agent disclosure.

 

A leaked Israeli government memo laid out the blueprint to keep money, oversight, and strategic direction flowing from Israel into a U.S. influence campaign, while keeping the foreign-agent label off the American organizations doing the work.

The July 2018 memo came from Israel’s Ministry of Strategic Affairs and concerned Kela Shlomo, a state-linked venture formed to fight what the ministry called Israel’s “delegitimization.”

 

The memo said legal advice had found Kela Shlomo was a “government-controlled entity.” U.S. groups taking its money and instructions could therefore face registration under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA.

 

The solution was a new American nonprofit. It would receive Israeli funding and a broad “general directive for action,” then select individual projects without the government’s “formal involvement.” The memo stated the design would spare the U.S. entities from registering as agents of Israel.

Senate Defeats Effort To Require Report on Israeli Killings of US Citizens in the West Bank

 

The effort failed in a vote of 47-51

 

On Tuesday night, the Senate voted against advancing a resolution that would have required the State Department to produce a report on the killing of US citizens by Jewish settlers and Israeli security forces in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

 

An effort to discharge the resolution failed 47-51, with just one Republican — Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) — voting in favor of the measure and one Democrat — Sen. Jon Fetterman (D-PA) — voting against it.

 

While the vote failed, Responsible Statecraft noted that it received far more support than a similar resolution introduced in January 2024, which failed 72-11.

 

The new resolution was led by Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and received a total of 25 cosponsors.

 

“In just over four years, nine American citizens have been killed on the West Bank by violent Israeli settlers or members of the Israeli security forces, and there has been zero accountability,” Van Hollen said in a speech on the Senate floor before the vote, according to The Hill.

 

The nine US citizens who have been killed by settlers and Israeli security forces include Omar Assad, Shireen Abu Akleh, Tawfic Abdel Jabbar, Mohammad Khdour, Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, Amer Rabee, Sayfollah Kamel Musallet, Khamis Ayyad, and Nasrallah Abu Siyam.

 

The resolution invoked Section 502B(c) of the Foreign Assistance Act, a provision allowing either chamber of Congress to demand a State Department report on the human rights practices of a country receiving US military aid.

 

It would have forced Secretary of State Marco Rubio to submit to Congress, within 30 days, a report on what information is available about the killings of the nine US citizens, the status of US and Israeli investigations into the killings, the number of US citizens currently held in Israeli prisons, the treatment of Palestinian children in Israeli prisons, and a description of the steps the US government has taken to reduce violence in the West Bank.

Israeli ministers call for increased military action after flydubai incident

Ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government called for increased military action on all regional fronts following what Israeli officials described as an attempted hijacking of a flydubai flight carrying more than 100 Israeli passengers on Wednesday.

 

Ministers and opposition politicians also praised the Israeli passengers aboard the flybubai aircraft, saying that they saved many lives and potentially prevented a disaster on the scale of 9/11. Netanyahu confirmed that one of the pilots on the flight had carried out a stabbing attack.

 

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich was the first member of the government to issue a statement after the incident, calling for action to be taken against “whoever tried to crash a plane and murder 180 Israelis. He and every state or terrorist organization that sent him,” he wrote.

 

He called for Israel to “address the intent and not the results.”

 

There is currently no evidence suggesting the suspected hijacker had backing from a foreign actor.

Mystery erupts as US spy satellite explodes… and Space Force won't rule out an attack

An American spy satellite that was recently declassified to the public has mysteriously exploded, sparking concern that more satellites that provide phone and internet service may soon suffer the same fate.

The device, called USA 32, broke apart while in low Earth orbit on September 13, creating a large debris cloud just over 480 miles above the planet, the US Space Force said.

The military added that 'further analysis is ongoing' and did not release any other details or rule out the possibility of an anti-satellite weapon.

 

USA 32 had been in space since 1988 and was also known by its classified code name 'Farrah III' during the Cold War with the Soviet Union.

The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), which builds and operates America's spy satellites to collect intelligence from space, had just revealed the full details of its mission last year - which was to listen for Soviet radar and other electronic signals and relay that data to the US military.

Although the satellite's mission had allegedly been over for years, its sudden destruction was not planned and the exact cause of the explosion has not been determined.

 

That mystery, which some have suspected could have been a collision with space debris or a meteor, has sparked concerns that other satellites which operate in this busy lane of space traffic could be next.

A statement by Spaceweather.com, which is run by astronomer Dr Tony Phillips, warned: 'Other satellites may be in danger. USA 32 broke up in a crowded shell of low Earth orbit. The collision threat is real.'

Space Force officials confirmed Farrah III's breakup on September 17, but did not name a probable cause and did not publish any theories of their own as to what caused the explosion.

One cause put forward by Dr Phillips's website was the possibility that a pressurized tank or battery cell may have ruptured, leading to an explosion.

The satellite had just turned 38 years old on September 5, and was originally designed to operate for only three years, according to the declassified records made public by NRO. Its lifespan in space was said to be just four years.

However, the likelihood that the 'tuna can-shaped' spy craft was struck by a deadly space rock or another piece of man-made hardware has set off red flags that it could happen to a satellite with much greater importance to everyday life on Earth in 2026.

 

In this satellite 'highway,' there are many everyday and military satellites which support phone and internet services around the globe.

This includes GPS and navigation, weather forecasts, banking, shipping, emergency communications, US military communications, reconnaissance and warning systems - all of which operate in low Earth orbit.

If debris was the cause of the mysterious explosion and more pieces start knocking those satellites out, services on the ground could fail, and the US would lose eyes and links it relies on in space.

'Within 50 km (31 miles) of its altitude are more than 200 active satellites, including the entire Iridium NEXT constellation. Even before USA 32 broke up, this region was extremely cluttered,' said Phillips, who has 30 years of space forecasting experience.

 

As Phillips mentioned, Iridium NEXT is a network of about 66 working satellites that provide satellite phone and data service almost anywhere on Earth, including oceans and at the poles.

While the investigation into the mystery explosion continues, CNN has claimed that there were no signs that the spy satellite was deliberately targeted in an attack by an anti-satellite weapon.

The satellite's destruction came just days after Space Force began sending a series of classified payloads into orbit using SpaceX rockets.

 

At the same time, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink made the shock announcement that the US military had indeed placed weapons in space for the first time.

Space Force officials then told the Daily Mail that the weapons were being deployed to counter space-based actions taken by both Russia and China over the last 20 years.

 

Five years ago, the Russian military showed how lethal its space-based satellites could be, successfully testing a hit-to-kill anti-satellite missile in 2021.

The device obliterated a defunct, Soviet-era spy satellite launched in 1982, sparking condemnation from around the world.

There has been no sign or announcement that such a weapon was used to destroy Farrah III at this time.

Police Officer Pleads Guilty to Producing and Possessing Child Sexual Abuse Material

 

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – A Callaway County, Mo., man pleaded guilty in federal court for producing and possessing Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).

 

Jimmy Joe Culbertson, 68, pleaded guilty before U.S. Chief Magistrate Judge Willie J. Epps, Jr. to two counts of production of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. Culbertson is a retired police sergeant, who served for more than 24 years.

 

Through his plea, Culbertson admits to photographing his abuse of two minor children. He also admits to possessing more than 150 CSAM files. Law enforcement located software intended to hide his online activity as well as permanently delete digital evidence.

 

Under federal statutes, Culbertson is subject to a sentence of up to 70 years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

 

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley S. Turner. It was investigated by the Boone County Sheriff’s Office Cyber Crimes Taskforce.

Science begins for Smile

On 23 September, the European-Chinese Smile mission was declared ready to start revealing how Earth responds to the wind of charged particles from the Sun.

This follows a busy in-space commissioning period since the spacecraft launched on 19 May and reached its target orbit for science operations on 20 June.

 

A spacecraft never quite behaves the same in space as it does on the ground.

Between 20 June and now, European and Chinese teams have been getting Smile ready – including deploying mechanisms, switching on units, checking all communications between the spacecraft and the ground, and fixing any issues that came up.

 

“The Smile mission is a testament to the trust built between our teams, their dedication to excellence and their determination to find solutions whatever the challenge,” says Professor Carole Mundell, ESA Director of Science.

" Smile is now approved to begin science operations. This is a very important milestone – a true pleasure to announce – and I am sure our excellent collaboration will deliver ground-breaking data to scientists around the world.”

 

Preparing Smile’s instruments for science

A big part of the commissioning period involved testing out Smile’s toolbox of four science instruments – the soft X-ray imager (SXI), ultraviolet aurora imager (UVI), magnetometer (MAG) and light ion analyser (LIA).

Each instrument will collect vital information to help us better understand solar storms, geomagnetic storms, and the science of space weather.

Smile will give us data on how solar activity interacts with Earth's magnetic field, leads to the auroras and can affect electronic infrastructure on and around Earth.

 

The video below is the first footage to be released from UVI, the first camera since 2008 to capture the full ring of northern lights around the North Pole in ultraviolet light. UVI is now recording the auroras for a record-breaking 45 hours at a time.

The footage was taken on 24 July 2026, just two weeks after UVI was switched on. It shows activity in the ring of northern lights due to a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field caused by a rush of solar wind particles.

 

Smile’s X-ray camera, SXI, was also successfully switched on and has taken its first images.

SXI is a key European contribution to the mission. The two images below – both showing the aftermath of a distant exploded distant star – were taken to check that the camera works as expected.

 

Though the camera itself is working very well, when pointed towards Earth it currently detects too much unwanted (stray) light.

To reduce this unwanted light as much as possible, specific settings and software updates are currently being changed and implemented onboard.

ESA, the consortium of universities and companies involved in the instrument, and the Chinese team leading the operations of the spacecraft are working together hard to achieve this goal. It helps that the instrument has a versatile design that can be adjusted remotely.

 

Because Smile is steadily pointing farther away from Earth and less light is emitted by the North Pole as we are moving towards northern winter, the unwanted light is reducing naturally.

It is due to reach a minimum in mid-October. At that point, SXI would take its first good image of the magnetopause (where the solar wind meets Earth’s magnetic field), or the northern polar cusp (a hole in the magnetosphere at the North Pole, where charged solar wind particles get funnelled towards Earth’s surface).

 

Let’s Smile: the film

Smile went from a handful of disconnected pieces to collecting science data in just over two years.

A new documentary film covers the exciting period in the mission’s development between June 2024 and May 2026.

 

It features behind-the-scenes footage of the different parts of the spacecraft arriving at ESA’s technical centre in the Netherlands, being attached together, tested and finally sent to Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana for launch.

Featuring exclusive interviews with scientists and engineers from across Europe, it is the final instalment in the series ‘Let’s Smile’, bringing together and supplementing the four shorter episodes released so far.

Russian Navy ships have for the first time passed through the iceberg-filled Shokalsky Strait along the strategically important Northern Sea Route in the Arctic.

 

The press office of Russia’s Northern Fleet announced the passage on Tuesday, releasing a short video showing the vessels navigating the narrow waterway. The strait lies between October Revolution Island and Bolshevik Island in the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago.

 

The Russian Navy group, consisting of the ice-class patrol ship Ivan Papanin, the large landing ship Kondopoga, the salvage tug Pamir, and the naval tanker Sergey Osipov, successfully passed from the Laptev Sea into the Kara Sea.

 

Before the vessels entered the hazardous waters of the strait, a Ka-29 naval transport and assault helicopter was dispatched to conduct aerial reconnaissance of the route.

 

Given the “challenging ice conditions,” the warships were placed on alert, with their crews repeatedly having to change course and speed at short notice to avoid icebergs.

 

The Russian Navy group also appraised the area for future operational purposes, according to the statement.

 

The passage of the Shokalsky Strait was part of a broader mission by the Russian Navy that covers multiple seas in the Arctic Region and is aimed at ensuring the safety of maritime traffic in the area.

 

Russia has bet big on the development of the Northern Sea Route, which is the shortest maritime passage between the Asia-Pacific region and northern Europe.

 

While use of the corridor remains limited at present due to accessibility constraints and the need for icebreakers to clear passage for cargo vessels, Moscow expects traffic to increase in the coming years as climate changes and other key maritime routes find themselves at the center of military conflicts.

 

Speaking in July, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow boasts the world’s largest icebreaker fleet, made up of more than 40 conventional vessels and eight nuclear-powered ships, with a new generation under development.

Kremlin dismisses Atlantic US-Russia swap claim

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has rejected as “inappropriate” the notion that the measures could be curtailed in exchange for the release of prisoners

The Kremlin hascategorically deniedthat Moscow and Washington discussed a plan whereby sanctions targeting Russia could be eased in return for the release of US nationals imprisoned in Russia.

 

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday responded to a question about an article in the Atlantic citing anonymous sources that claimed the administration of US President Donald Trump was considering relaxing some economic restrictions if Moscow would release individuals Washington considers unjustly imprisoned.

 

“The issue was not discussed in those termsand could not have been, because we categorically reject the notion that there are any political prisoners in Russia and consider framing the issue in this way entirely inappropriate,” Peskov told journalists.

 

Russian and US special services continue regular contacts concerning various prisoner exchanges, he added.

 

According to The Atlantic, the proposal was advanced by White House envoy John Coale and approved by Trump for exploration several months ago.

 

The initiative, the outlet's sources speculate, could have reportedly allowed Washington to broaden its engagement with Moscow beyond negotiations over Ukraine and pursue deals involving Russian oil, diesel, rare earth minerals and other commodities.

 

Trump’s envoys have been exploring ways to revive economic ties with Russia but have so far viewed at least a partial ceasefire in Ukraine as a prerequisite, the outlet wrote on Tuesday.

 

Washington and Moscow have separately discussed potential economic cooperation. Following talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow earlier this month, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said thesides had discussed possible “major, mutually beneficial Russian-American projects.”

 

The Atlantic also claimed that Washington is seeking to arrange lower-level talks between the US, Russia and Ukraine as early as next month, could focus on a limited ceasefire covering energy infrastructure, potentially in the UAE.

 

Moscow has repeatedly said it opposes a temporary truce that would allow Ukraine to regroup and rearm, insisting that hostilities can end only through a comprehensive settlement that addresses the root causes of the conflict. Peskov was not asked to respond to the claim.

 

Speaking at the UN Security Council last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow would not agree to pause military operation because such a step could be used by Ukraine’s European backers to supply Kiev with more weapons.

 

The prospect of renewing US-Russian business ties before the Ukraine conflict is resolved has been sharply criticized by Vladimir Zelensky, who told The Atlantiche would try to “block” any sanctions relief for Moscow before hostilities end.(KEK he has no power to do this.)
