‘We all knew’: Bishop says cardinals and bishops who deny knowing about McCarrick’s abuse are lying

The first bishop of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter told his flock in a recent homily that he doesn’t believe the cardinals and bishops who are claiming they didn’t know about sexual abuse allegations against disgraced Archbishop Theodore McCarrick.

What did he say?

Addressing the church’s handling of the McCarrick scandal, Bishop Steven Lopes told his parishioners, “I’ll tell you what response I think is not good enough: It’s the parade of cardinals and bishops who have rushed to the television cameras, clutching their pectoral crosses, saying, ‘I knew nothing.’

“I don’t believe it, and I am one of them. I don’t believe it,” the bishop reiterated, telling the audience that when he was in seminary, McCarrick often visited the school.

“And we all knew,” Lopes emphasized.

Lopes clarified, “Now granted, rumor is not the same as accusation. An accusation has a who, a what, a where, a when and a how. A rumor usually doesn’t. But nevertheless, what this speaks to was the failure of apostles to live the integral moral life, certainly; but also to act, also to respond, also to safeguard the flock entrusted to their care. That’s the problem.”

He added that Catholics “have every right to be angry, have every right to be asking, ‘What are these apostles set over us supposed to be doing?'”

Earlier this month, Bishop Shawn McKnight of Jefferson City, Missouri, expressed his dismay over reports that so many bishops knew of abuses by McCarrick.

“It is almost unbearable,” he wrote on the diocese website. “How could a brother bishop disrespect with such callousness the dignity of young boys, seminarians and priests over decades and on one called him on the carpet?

“It is inexplicable to me,” McKnight wrote. “This cannot continue, and I hope with God’s grace there will be a change of culture among the clergy.”

What’s the background?

The church has been hit with a series of scandals this summer — accused of numerous and systemic cover-ups of sexual assault allegations against priests — resulting in calls for Pope Francis to step down.

Church leaders such as Pope Francis and Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich have been widely criticized for seemingly tone-deaf public responses to the allegations.

Priests have also vocalized frustration over church leaders’ priorities in the wake of hundreds of abuse claims spanning several decades.

Snowden 2.0: NSA Contractor Arrested For Stealing Secrets

In the biggest hack of the NSA since the Snowden scandal in 2013, in mid-August we reported that a mysterious group calling itself the "Shadow Brokers" had managed to hack the NSA's Equation Group - a government cyberattack hacking group associated with the NSA, and released a bunch of the organization's hacking tools. The "group" also notably said that if it received 1,000,000 Bitcoins, worth roughly $560 million at the time, it would release all the hacked files. With the breach taking place shortly after the infamous hack of the DNC by Guccifer 2.0, speculation promptly swirled that this was another covert Russian operation, with even Edward Snowden chiming in.

However, it now appears this particular jump to conclusions was premature.

As the NYT reported moments ago, an NSA contractor, Harold Thomas Martin III, age 51, from Glen Burnie, MD was arrested on August 29th, with the FBI investigating whether he is the party responsible for stealing and disclosing highly classified computer codes developed to hack into the networks of foreign governments.

This latest theft of secret data by an insider raises the embarrassing prospect that for the second time in three years a disgruntled employee has managed to steal highly damaging secret information from the N.S.A. In 2013, Edward Snowden, who was also a contractor for the agency, took a vast trove of documents that were later passed to journalists, exposing vast NSA surveillance programs in the United States and abroad.

The information believed stolen by this contractor, who like Snowden worked for the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton which is responsible for building and operating many of the agency’s most sensitive cyberoperations, appears to be different in nature from Mr. Snowden’s theft the NYT adds.

The contractor arrested in recent weeks is suspected of taking the highly classified “source code” developed by the agency to break into computer systems of adversaries like Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. Two officials said that some of the information the contractor is suspected of taking was dated.

Predictably, moments ago Edward Snowden chimed in with a tweet, stating that "This is huge. Did the FBI secretly arrest the person behind the reports NSA sat on huge flaws in US products? "

In other words, the entity behind "Shadow Brokers" appears to have been found, and as we speculated, the hack been confirmed to be the work of a "rogue insider" and not of Putin. That said, we now await to see what other notable upcoming hacks will be blamed, as usual, on the Kremlin.

An employee with New Jersey’s child welfare agency shot and killed herself at her office Monday morning, according to police.

The 57-year-old woman, who was not identified, used a handgun to commit suicide inside the Division of Child Protection and Permanency office in Paramus, Chief of Police Kenneth Ehrenberg said.

Police responded to a report of an injured person at the office on Frisch Court near Route 4 at about 9:45 a.m. The woman was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center in grave condition and later died, said Ehrenberg.

The agency – formerly called the Division of Youth and Family Services – is tasked with child protective services and has offices at locations throughout the state.

“This morning, our Bergen Central Office in Paramus experienced the tragic loss of a dedicated colleague,” state Department of Children and Families Commissioner Christine Norbut said in a statement. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement to determine the circumstances around this tragedy. We are still learning what happened, and at this time, we would defer to law enforcement for any additional information that can be shared.”

Norbut said calls to the Bergen County office are being rerouted to sister offices in the region.

Ehrenberg said the woman’s death is being investigated by Paramus Police Department detectives, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and investigators with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency.

How do we handle the aftermath and making it right? I will use the Iraq war as an example. Let's say I am a normal guy/girl in Iraq and during the US led war or terror, I lost my family and everything I own during the bombings.
