On Tuesday, the NTV broadcaster reported that the Turkish police had found evidence during their authorized search of the Saudi Consulate showing that Khashoggi had been murdered there.

Saudi Arabia’s public prosecutor has begun processing the cases of 56 men detained in the country’s sweeping anti-corruption purge late last year, an official said on Sunday.

The 56 are still in Saudi government custody after failing to be exonerated or reach financial settlements with the government.

The shock crackdown in November 2017 saw a new Supreme Anti-Corruption Committee round up 381 corruption suspects on Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s orders, with many confined and interrogated.

Just 30 or so of the men’s identities were released.

The list of names included top officials, members of the Saudi royal family, and global investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.

More than 2,000 bank accounts were frozen and private jets were grounded as detainees were rounded up and, in many cases, held in Riyadh’s opulent Ritz-Carlton hotel.

In January, Saudi Arabia’s attorney general released a statement saying it had completed its review of cases and would release all those who had paid settlements or against whom it did not have enough evidence.

It estimated the value of settlements at 400 billion Saudi riyals (more than £75 billion) “represented in various types of assets, including real estate, commercial entities, securities, cash and other assets.”

On Sunday, the Saudi government announced that the public prosecutor had begun investigations and opening arguments in the corruption cases of the 56 men still in custody.

According to deputy attorney general for investigations Saud al-Hamad, the charged men will be referred to court for prosecution in cases related to money laundering or terrorism.

Mr Hamad said some of those under investigation hadn’t respected confidential agreements, while others committed further, as yet unspecified, offences.

The anti-corruption campaign was framed as part of Mohammad bin Salman’s push to transform Saudi’s oil-dependent economy, which has been long plagued by graft, and make it more modern, diversified, and capable of withstanding diving oil prices.

But critics say the blanket of secrecy that has cloaked proceedings, as well as the lack of detail on financial settlements reached, suggests it was more about gathering cash and shoring up the crown prince’s growing authority than tackling corruption.

Australian Spider Venom Found to Kill Cancer; Leave Healthy Cells Unharmed

Medical scientists have made a stunning breakthrough in the fight to cure cancer after discovering that the venom from a deadly Australian spider can actually kill melanoma cells while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue unharmed, according to reports.

Researchers at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Austrailia found a peptide from the venom of a Darling Downs funnel-web spider contains potent anti-cancer properties, capable of destroying melanoma cancer cells after the compound is chemically manipulated.

The new cancer treatment has so far been successfully tested on animals including mice and the Tasmanian Devil.

Speaking to ABC News, Greek lead researcher Dr. Maria Ikonomopulou said:

“We found the Australian funnel-web spider peptide was better at killing melanoma cancer cells and stopped them from spreading, and it also didn’t have a toxic effect on healthy skin cells.“

According to the Daily Mail, the new cancer treatment was taken from the spider’s venom gland but researchers are still trying to determine whether the peptide came from the spider’s venom or blood.

Dr. Ikonomopulou said she tested the peptide against a similar compound from a Brazilian spider, which also had anti-cancer properties, in laboratory experiments.

“When we tested the Australian spider peptide on melanoma cells in the laboratory, it killed a majority of them,” she told the Brisbane Times.

The peptide had been tested on animals including mice and Australia’s Tasmanian Devil. The anti-cancer compound caused a slowed growth of melanoma in mice.

The compound also proved effective in treating facial tumor cells of the endangered Tasmanian Devils.

Dr. Ikonomopulou said the compound could now be a potential drug to protect the threatened species.

“The melanoma research is not groundbreaking on a global scale, but it is very interesting to find an Australian spider that has good potential to explore,” she said.

Spider peptides were also being tested of their antibiotic and anti-cancer properties in international research. Dr. Ikonomopulou, who began her research at QIMR, is now doing independent research in Spain.

Funnel webs are native to the eastern coast of Australia and live in burrows in the ground with ‘funnel’ entrances, often under rocks or logs

They’re known as some of the most deadly spiders in the world, with 35 known subspecies in Australian alone. Six of those are capable and are known to cause severe injuries to people.

They have long sharp fangs that can penetrate fingernails and even shoes, and when provoked rear up onto their hind legs and display their fangs.

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her aides were never a target or even a subject in the FBI’s investigation into Clinton’s use of a private server, DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz revealed in Senate testimony.

“Nobody was listed as a subject of this [Clinton email] investigation at any point in time,” Horowitz said while testifying to the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday, adding that fact was “surprising” for a criminal probe.

The Inspector General’s report explains that at no time during the former Secretary of State’s email investigation was she or any of her aides, including Huma Abedin and Cheryl Mills, designated as a subject of the investigation at all.

The report elaborates on this irregularity in more detail:

“The Midyear investigation was opened with an ‘Unknown Subject(s) [UNSUB],’ and at no time during the investigation was any individual identified by the FBI as a subject or target of the investigation, including former Secretary Clinton,” the report states on page 40.

“FBI witnesses told us that the ‘UNSUB’ designation is common and means that the FBI has not identified a specific target or subject at the outset of an investigation.”

“According to FBI witnesses, this allowed the FBI to expand the focus of the investigation based on the evidence without being ‘locked into a particular subject.’ With respect to the Midyear investigation, witnesses told the OIG that the FBI did not identify anyone as a subject or target during the investigation because it was unclear how the classified material had been introduced to the server and who was responsible for improperly placing it there.”

These findings contrast with ex-FBI Director James Comey’s statement to the Office of the Inspector General that Clinton was indeed a subject in the email investigation and was unaware of the “UNSUB” designations.

“In his OIG interview, Comey described former Secretary Clinton as the subject of the Midyear investigation and stated that he was unaware that the investigation had an UNSUB designation,” the report continued on page 41.

“Similarly, in his book, Comey referred to former Secretary Clinton as the subject of the Midyear investigation, stating that one question the investigation sought to answer was what Clinton was thinking ‘when she mishandled that classified information.’”

NEW YORK – The Saudi Binladin Group is not liable for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks because it made Osama bin Laden surrender his stake in the company 14 years ago, attorneys for the multinational engineering firm argue.

The terrorist mastermind was forced out in 1993 as a shareholder in two companies his family owns, the lawyers wrote in court filings responding to lawsuits over the attacks.

The company filed the defense papers Friday in U.S. District Court in answer to claims brought by victims' representatives, survivors and insurance carriers. The plaintiffs, who seek billions of dollars in damages, allege that the Saudi Binladin Group joined numerous banks, charities and individuals in providing material support and assistance to al-Qaeda before the attacks.

The plaintiffs contend that Bakr Binladin – Osama bin Laden's brother and chairman of Saudi Binladin Group – was one of al-Qaeda's principal financiers.

A judge in July had ordered Saudi Binladin Group to provide additional information about where the money for Osama bin Laden's 2 percent stake in the company went.

In the Friday filing, Saudi Binladin lawyers said that Bakr Binladin publicly renounced Osama bin Laden in a statement released to the media in February 1994. Two months later, the Saudi government revoked Osama bin Laden's citizenship and froze his assets, the lawyers noted.

These actions, they said, occurred well before the United States first placed Osama bin Laden on its list of designated terrorist individuals and organizations, on Aug. 20, 1998.

Osama bin Laden has more than 50 siblings who share in the fortune amassed after their father, Mohammed Binladin , built his construction empire, elevating his family to among the wealthiest in Saudi Arabia.

Most of the family uses the Binladin spelling, as do court documents.

The Sept. 11 commission concluded that the Sudanese government took Osama bin Laden's assets when he left Sudan in 1996.

Attorneys for the Binladin family companies have said Osama bin Laden never received any buyout payment.
