A Wall Street Journal reporter who had an affair with an American official she was covering in Iraq resigned from the newspaper Tuesday, a week after racy e-mails disclosing the relationship surfaced.

The newspaper said the reporter also shared “certain unpublished news articles” with the official in violation of company policy.

Gina Chon, who had covered Iraq for the Journal, quit under pressure after the disclosure of her relationship with Brett McGurk while both lived in Baghdad in 2008. McGurk, who was on the National Security Council staff during the Bush administration, is President Obama’s nominee to be ambassador to Iraq.

McGurk and Chon apparently were married to others at the time that they struck up a relationship; they obtained divorces and recently married.

Chon may be the highest-profile journalist to lose her job over an intimate relationship with a source, but she’s not the first. Although it rarely captures headlines, reporters “get involved with sources fairly often,” said Kelly McBride, an ethics specialist for the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based journalism education organization.

McBride said she receives “five to 10” calls from news organizations every year seeking advice on how to deal with journalists who are having relationships with people they’re covering.

The situations have ranged from a newspaper political reporter involved with a county chairman to a health reporter who was having a relationship with the public-relations executive of a local hospital. “It happens all the time, because people fall in love,” McBride said.

Chon’s mistake appears to have been that she hid her relationship with McGurk from her bosses at the Journal.

The newspaper said in a statement Tuesday that Chon “agreed to resign” after she “entered into a personal relationship with Mr. McGurk, which she failed to disclose to her editor.” It said it found no evidence that her work was negatively affected by her affair.

The paper declined to say what Chon may have disclosed to McGurk. It’s also not clear that McGurk disclosed any sensitive information to Chon.

News organizations typically discourage personal relationships with sources and will usually reassign journalists who are romantically involved with someone they cover.

The idea is to avoid relationships that could compromise a reporter’s judgment or give the appearance of playing favorites, said John K. Hartman, a professor of journalism at Central Michigan University. “Serious journalists know that it is imperative to avoid any conflict of interest and any situation that might taint their reporting perspective,” he said. Sometimes, however, reporters “can take cozying up to sources too far.”

Physicists provide first model of Moon's rotational dynamics, accounting for the solid inner core

ew research from University of Alberta physicists provides the first-ever model of our Moon's rotational dynamics, taking into consideration its solid inner core. Their model helps to explain why, as seen from Earth, the Moon appears to wobble on its axis.

The answer, said physicist Mathieu Dumberry, lies in the complex geometry of the Moon's orbit, locked in what is known as a Cassini state.

"The Moon goes around the Earth, but its orbit is inclined by about five degrees with respect to the normal to the ecliptic plane, the plane about which Earth rotates around the Sun. But just like the Earth's rotation axis is inclined by 23.5 degrees in space, the Moon's rotation axis is also inclined, by about 1.5 degrees," explained Dumberry, associate professor in the Department of Physics. "Over one orbit, it points at the same direction in space – which is in the same plane as the normal to the orbit of the moon. This defines a Cassini state."

This type of lunar orbit was first observed by Giovanni Cassini more than four centuries ago. Since that time, the complex mathematical and physical elements of the Cassini state have been examined by scientists around the world. But what makes this model unique is accounting for a solid inner core at the centre of the Moon.

The heart of the matter

"Essentially, we took all forces into account and tried to predict the angle of the inner core of the Moon," explained Dumberry. "The tilt angle can be predicted, but we need to know accurately the deep interior structure on the Moon. However we know it is not aligned with the mantle or the fluid core.

We determined that the inner core is tilted as much as 17 degrees away from the mantle in one direction or 33 degrees away in the other.

And, if scientists can identify the angle of the inner core, they will be able to develop a more accurate picture of the interior of the Moon.

"This is the first model of the rotational dynamics of the Moon that fully takes into account the presence of a solid inner core," said Christopher Stys, graduate student who conducted this research under the supervision of Dumberry. "Understanding the composition of the Moon's interior may provide insight to the events leading up to the formation of the Moon and the early history of the Earth."

Hillary Blocked McGurk Probe

Top State Department staff under Hillary Clinton allegedly blocked an investigation into the president's nominee for ambassador to Iraq.

Congress pretty much holds the purse strings of the tax payers money so it would have to be pretty damn creative to find funding for wall elsewhere.

How was Hoover dam paid for? Treasury loan for electricity production that was paid off?

Maybe possible to lease the unbuilt border wall to energy companies to generate electricity via solar panels and get private funding?

What untapped money is out there in what departments? Grants? Etc?

Would have to be pretty creative to find but may be possible.

I know that Q said the military may build wall if congress doesn’t fund but I’m pretty sure that the funding bill they passed awhile back prohibited building a wall with any of that money.

I had an idea where the wall could be built by using old tires from tire dumps. There are plenty and they would be free. Just fill with dirt as you stack them up and use perpendicular short walls to brace the span every so often. Would be a very very strong wall that even a tank couldn’t get through.

Old tires and dirt are free.

Only issue is to make sure you don’t leave any ledges between the tire layers so that illegals can use to climb. Would have to stucco over or get creative.
