Officer Michael Caddy, 29, died about 3:45 pm on Wilcox St., near the 121st Precinct stationhouse. The officer used a gun to shoot himself inside a car, said police. An off-duty officer discovered him. Caddy was going through a divorce. He leaves behind a wife and a young child. Brian Perskin, who was Caddy’s lawyer, described the divorce as “non-eventful.”
A neighbor at Caddy’s Staten Island apartment building said he seemed “calm” and “normal” as he headed to work on Friday. “I can’t believe this happened,” the neighbor said. Sources said Caddy was assigned to work on domestic violence cases.
The string of suicide tragedies began June 5, when Deputy Chief Steven Silks, 62, fatally shot himself not longer after filing his retirement papers. He was found shortly before dawn near Forest Hills Stadium in Queens.
The next morning, the NYPD frantically searched for a missing detective, Joseph Calabrese, 58, after his car was found near Plum Beach, alongside the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn. Calabrese’s body was found that afternoon.

Robert Gage, a three-time World Cup Grand Prix rider, had been banned on Feb. 1 by the U.S. Center for SafeSport, which investigates allegations of abuse and misconduct in Olympic sports. Details of the Center’s investigation into Gage were confidential, but many of Gage’s friends and associates on social media said it played a role in his suicide.
It is one of at least two suicides this year that some blame in part on SafeSport investigations. Figure skater John Coughlin, 33, a two-time U.S. pairs champion, hanged himself in his father's Kansas City home Jan. 18, one day after he received an interim suspension from SafeSport. USA TODAY Sports, citing a person with knowledge of the situation, reported in January that there were three reports of sexual misconduct against Coughlin. His death effectively ended the investigation into those reports, SafeSport announced in February.
Gage trained under Show Jumping Hall of Fame trainer Jimmy Williams, who was accused of child molestation involving young riders after his death in 1993.
