Two points of interest to tackle when practicable, to take to the supreme court:

 

States making any thing other than gold and silver coin as a payment of debt.

 

Constitutionality of the National Security Act of 1947 and all related laws passed by the legislature and related executive orders enacted by the executive.

 

There are many other problems, but I think a check on those two points through the people and the courts could push things back into better equilibrium.

At least 18 students died after a huge fire broke out on the top floor of a building housing a coaching center in the western Indian city of Surat, local media reported. Some were forced to jump several stories to flee the blaze.

Buried deep in the last paragraph of this NYT Trump-hate diatribe the author acknowledges the fact that CONGRESS HAS NEVER AUTHORIZED A DESIGN CHANGE. I can't find that anyone in Congress has even written a bill to be voted on.

Joe Biden was reportedly one of the few Obama administration officials who participated in secretive meetings during the early stages of the Obama-era intelligence communityโ€™s initial operations regarding suspected Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.

That tidbit was contained deep inside a 7,700-plus word Washington Post article published June 23, 2017 in which the newspaper also detailed the highly compartmentalized nature of the original Russia interference investigation and the manner in which other U.S. intelligence agencies were deliberately kept in the dark. Part of the efforts eventually involved unsubstantiated and ultimately discredited charges made by the Christopher Steele dossier that Trump campaign officials were colluding with Russia.

LocalBitcoins Bans Bitcoin Buying in Iran in Blow to Rising Crypto Commerce

 

LocalBitcoins has officially shut off service for Iran-based users, a move that follows weeks of rising rial trading volumes on the platform.

 

The Helsinki-based peer-to-peer exchange has not explicitly said why Iranians are suddenly being cut off from its service, though U.S. sanctions are almost certainly the cause.

 

News of the move first circulated across local language Telegram channels earlier this week that the exchange had blocked Iranians. Users reported encountering problems in posting new trades and updating previous ones on the website.

 

โ€œIf you have an account already, you will be able to withdraw your bitcoins, but you will not be able to use the platform for trading,โ€ reads a response by LocalBitcoins to an Iranian user that has circulated in social media and local news websites.

 

A message also appeared on the platformโ€™s Iran country page that read: โ€œUnfortunately, LocalBitcoins is currently not available in your selected region.โ€ On Twitter, the exchange told several Iranian users: โ€œOur services are not available in your region for risk-based reasons.โ€

 

LocalBitcoins has been perhaps the most popular bitcoin trading website among Iranian users, as it doesnโ€™t require international credit card information โ€“ something Iranians have been bereft of for decades โ€“ and allows users to pay with their local bank accounts.

 

According to Iranian users, the website was also open to reviewing local bank account documents to resolve potential problems, signaling that they have advisors familiar with the largely isolated Iranian banking system.

 

Moreover, LocalBitcoins was trusted by Iran-based bitcoin users because it holds funds in escrow until both sides have given final confirmation, thereby ensuring transaction safety and lowering fraud.

Sanctions a likely cause

 

LocalBitcoins did not respond to several requests for comments by CoinDesk on the reasons behind its decision to ban Iranians. But almost undoubtedly, the escalating โ€œmaximum pressureโ€ campaign of the U.S. against Iran has prompted the Finnish website to block Iranian users.

 

Just over a year ago, U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from Iranโ€™s nuclear deal with world powers, announcing reimposition of new rounds of stringent economic sanctions.

 

Legitimate Iranian crypto users have already felt the sting of sanctions several times during the past year as multiple exchanges, including Binance, Bittrex and ShapeShift have stopped offering services.

A lone Republican congressman single-handedly stalled a $19 billion disaster aid bill that lawmakers had expected to pass before the Memorial Day weekend.

 

Texas Rep. Chip Roy took to the House floor late Friday morning to object when lawmakers tried to approve the legislation using a fast-track tactic, with many members of Congress already gone for the holiday

 

โ€œIf I do not object, Congress will have passed a bill with $19 billion without being here to vote on it,โ€ Roy said.

 

Railing against the "swamp," Roy objected to speeding the measure through a nearly-empty chamber, complained it wasn't paid for and challenged a decision not to include President Trump's $4.5 billion request for dealing with the migrant crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border.

 

Under House rules, it only took one opposing member to derail the vote. The package likely will now be delayed at least until early June.

 

Democrats slammed Roy in response. Rep. Donna Shalala, D-Fla., called the turn of events โ€œtragic.โ€

 

House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey, D-N.Y., said in a statement it is "deeply disappointing that House Republicans are now making disaster victims wait even longer to get the help they need."

 

The surprise development comes after the Senate overwhelmingly approved the legislation Thursday afternoon to help several states and Puerto Rico recover from hurricanes, floods and wildfires โ€“ this, after Trump himself backed off from his demand that border security money be added.

 

Senators had passed the measure on an 85-8 vote; eight Republicans opposed it. Trump then said he would sign the measure, tweeting: "The U.S. Senate has just approved a 19 Billion Dollar Disaster Relief Bill, with my total approval. Great!"

 

Much of the money would go to Trump strongholds such as the Florida Panhandle, rural Georgia and North Carolina, and Iowa and Nebraska. Several military facilities would receive money to rebuild, including Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.

 

The legislation is crucial to states still reeling from devastating hurricanes over the past two years and epic flooding. It would provide over $600 million in nutrition assistance and $304 million in aid for Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

For hours, people in a south Fort Myers community off Iona Road watched as deputies and federal investigators carried dozens of boxes out of a home on Anchorage Way.

 

"I saw at least 25 police cars and Homeland Security," owner of Judd & Associates Jim Messina said.

 

Messina is working on a home three doors down and spoke with investigators on Wednesday.

According to property records, the home is owned by brothers, Edward and Brian Krassenstein. Neighbors said the men are not only twins but business partners.

 

Neighbors said agents also paid a visit to a house one street over where property records show one of the brothers also owns a home.

 

"I'm surprised," neighbor Louis Fiore said.

 

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed its agency along with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed search warrants in the area. They say that the brothers own a number of websites and that someone may have infiltrated one of them.

 

"It was an odd combination which makes you wonder," Fiore said.

 

Federal investigators took electronics and computers from the home for the investigation.

 

We found the brothers are listed as co-founders of a company called 3Dprint, which is described as a news organization for 3D printing.

 

We reached out to the company and the brothers but have not heard back.

 

NBC2 did speak to a former business partner of the brothers who said recently one of the men was subpoenaed for one of his businesses.

Friday's session has already featured a frantic flurry of trade-war-related headlines that have - at least in the market's view - overshadowed Theresa May's tearful announcement that she will be stepping down as PM.

 

Beijing repudiated President Trump's Thursday claim about a 'speedy' trade deal, saying there were no plans for a Trump-Xi meeting. US stock futures pared gains on that headline. Also, US firms ratcheted up the pressure on Huawei, with Microsoft joining the contingent of chip and tech companies that is planning to cut ties with Huawei over Washington's blacklisting.

 

And now, the South China Morning Post is reporting that China's largest chipmaker is withdrawing its ADRs from the New York Stock Exchange, and will subsequently trade only in Hong Kong. The company said 'low trading volumes' and the 'cost of maintaining the listing' motivated its decision.

 

Chinaโ€™s biggest maker of semiconductors is to withdraw from the New York Stock Exchange as the increasingly ferocious trade war with the US spills over into the technology sector.

 

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) said on Friday evening it has notified NYSE of its intention to apply on June 3 to delist its so-called American depositary receipts from the bourse. In a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange, where its shares are listed, SMIC cited low trading volumes of its ADRs and the costs of maintaining the listing and complying with reporting requirements and related laws.

 

The delisting is expected to happen after June 13, and trading of the chip makerโ€™s US securities will shift to the over-the-counter market, the statement said.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) โ€” Pennsylvaniaโ€™s treasury department is accusing about a dozen large financial firms of working together to illegally inflate the price of bonds issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac over seven years.

 

A federal court filing by Pennsylvania Treasurer Joe Torsella late Thursday cites what his office says is evidence from a โ€œcooperating co-conspiratorโ€ in a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into price-fixing in the secondary market for bonds issued by government-controlled companies.

 

Evidence cited in the filing includes brief transcripts of what it says are online chats by traders from various financial institutions that are the largest dealers of the bonds.

 

In the discussions, the traders allegedly agree to fix bond prices at artificially inflated prices, cheating Pennsylvania and other buyers of the bonds. The price-fixing began in 2009 and lasted through 2015, and violates federal anti-trust law, Torsellaโ€™s filing said.

 

An analysis shows that pricing patterns are consistent with such a price-fixing agreement, the filing said. The โ€œeconomic fingerprintsโ€ of the conspiracy diminished after January 2016, when the cooperating co-conspirator discovered it, it said.

 

Torsellaโ€™s office said it is bound by a confidentiality agreement and could not reveal how it came to receive information from the cooperating co-conspirator. It would not say who the confidentiality agreement is with.

 

The bonds are a cornerstone for the investment portfolios of government and institutional investors. Thursdayโ€™s filing is part of an ongoing case in federal court in New Yorkโ€™s southern district being led by Torsellaโ€™s office.

 

Pennsylvaniaโ€™s Treasury Department is seeking class action in the case, which has consolidated lawsuits by various government entities, labor unions and public pension systems, including the city of Baltimore.

 

It said Pennsylvaniaโ€™s various agencies bought or sold $63 billion in so-called GSE bonds during the seven-year period. Torsellaโ€™s office is in the process of determining how much money state agencies lost because of the alleged price-fixing scheme, officials there said.

 

The Department of Justice hasnโ€™t filed any criminal charges and the cooperating co-conspirator is not directly identified in Torsellaโ€™s court filing. Torsellaโ€™s filing identifies Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. as a co-conspirator and among various entities that participated in the violations, but are not named as defendants. A Deutsche Bank spokesman declined comment Friday.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), during an exclusive interview with Campus Reform, issued quite the challenge to young socialists while addressing the topic of free speech and intellectual diversity on college campuses.

 

Campus Reform Editor-in-Chief Lawrence Jones sat down with the Texas Republican on Tuesday in Cruz's Washington, D.C. office to ask him, among other things, about a recent report that found that 41 percent of college students do not think hate speech should be protected under the First Amendment, a poll on which Campus Reform previously reported.

 

Cruz responded to the report, saying that he's not surprised by its findings.

 

"Unfortunately, studentsโ€ฆthey're not being taught to think," Cruz said. "What's defined as hate speech, by the way, is anything the Left disagrees with. The First Amendment wasn't designed for popular speech. You actually don't need the First Amendment if what you're saying is popular. The First Amendment was designed to protect unpopular speech, to protect minority views, to protect views that are not in common agreement. And particularly the whole point about a college experience is learning to confront views you've never seen before."

 

The Texas senator continued by recalling how, in his own college experience, he took classes with "Marxist" professors because he said he wanted to know how they thought. Cruz contrasted that experience with the approach taken by today's young socialists.

White Americans have become less racist since President Trump took office, according to a study of racial prejudice that spans the Obama administration and the beginning of Trumpโ€™s presidency.

 

University of Pennsylvania researchers first surveyed a group of 20,000 white Americans on racial bias in 2007, then followed up with a subset of them eight times over the course of about 12 years, most recently in November 2018. Their prejudice was assessed based on the credence they gave to racial stereotypes. Researchers hypothesized that Trumpโ€™s race rhetoric would show an increase in prejudice, but the results actually showed a marked decline compared to the Obama years.

Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler appeared weak and on the verge of passing out at a presser held by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio Friday morning in Manhattan.

Video from the the press conference at P.S. 199 in the Upper West Side of Manhattan shows de Blasio and others coming to Nadler's aid offering water and asking him if he was OK.

During one point in the press conference, held to discuss expanding school zone cameras, you can hear de Blasio offering water to Nadler and telling him that he looked a little dehydrated.

When de Blasio asks Nadler if he was OK, Nadler can be heard responding with a faint "no" before putting his hand over his face.

De Blasio cleared the school gym, but plans to hold the press conference after they figure out what is wrong with Nadler who appeared alert and conscious, but pale.

In a statement, Nadler's spokesperson said: "He is okay. Seems to have been dehydrated and it was very warm in the room. He is now responsive and receiving a check-up."

Conservative blocks House passage of disaster relief bill

 

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, blocked a disaster relief bill in the House on Friday by objecting to an unanimous consent vote.

 

The Texas Republican who previously worked for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) argued the House should not have recessed before debating the legislation and holding a vote in arguing why he moved to stall the legislation.

 

โ€œI'm here today primarily because if I do not object, Congress will have passed into law a bill that spends $19 billion of taxpayer money without members of Congress being present in our nation's capital to vote on it,โ€ he said on the floor.

 

โ€œSecondly, it's a bill that includes nothing to address the clear national emergency and humanitarian crisis we have at our southern border.โ€

 

He also cited concerns with how the bill would ultimately be paid for.

 

The $19.1 billion disaster aid package, which did not include the $4.5 billion in border funding requested by President Trump, passed the Senate in an 85-8 vote on Thursday, and the House GOP leadership had also supported moving forward with the bill.

 

The House is due to come back on June 3 though it will hold a "pro forma" session on Tuesday, providing another opportunity to pass the bill.

 

Roy slammed the Democrats' objection to provide border funding as a reason why he moved to block, for now, the disaster aid bill.

 

"While Speaker Pelosi has consistently denied the crisis at our border, and thus has denied the humanity of the victims of cartels and other traffickers, she has been insisting that there is no money to satisfy the good faith compromise emergency funding requests from the White House," he said.

 

Roy also forcefully argued the disaster aid bill should have included the border funding requested by Trump, saying it would have ensured the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services "do not run out of money while managing the over 100,000 illegal aliens being apprehended and the Unaccompanied Alien Minor Children being unable to be housed appropriately."

 

The measure includes $900 million in aid to Puerto Rico โ€” a provision the president previously objected to โ€” in addition to assistance for areas of the United States affected by hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes and wildfires.

 

The bill included $4.38 billion that was slated to be allocated toward Hurricane Harvey housing aid to Texas.

 

The president previously agreed to sign the legislation, siding with Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) and Sen. David Perdue's (R-Ga.) call for him to support the measure.

Fmr. Navy SEAL and Gov. Eric Greitens to reactivate and deploy to Middle East

 

Former Navy SEAL and Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens will be deploying with the U.S. Navy this fall, according to a new report on Wednesday.

 

Sources told The Kansas City Star that Greitens has revealed to friends and supporters that he will deploy to the Middle East later this year, resuming his active duty Navy status, though not as a SEAL.

 

He has been on inactive status with the Navyโ€™s Standby Reserve since 2017 when he was elected as governor. The status enabled him to keep his commission, but paused his pay, promotion eligibility and time served accruement toward retirement.

 

Greitens, 45, resigned as governor last year amid a scandal and charges stemming from an affair.
