Report: Twitter May Create Special Label for Trump Tweets That ‘Violate Rules’

CNN reports that Twitter is considering adding labels to the President’s tweets that it judges to violate the site’s rules, indicating that the tweets were going to remain on the platform because they are considered to be in the public interest. During an interview with the Washington Post, Twitter’s head of legal, policy and trust, Vijaya Gadde, revealed the company’s plan.

Twitter is reportedly attempting to maintain the website’s standards while giving context to tweets from politicians and public figures which may violate the websites rules but add to public debate. Gadde was asked whether Twitter’s current approach to the president’s tweets means that he receives total immunity to say what he wishes on the platform. Gadde responded by saying that the platform wants to find a way to acknowledge that some tweets break the sites community standards but keep them on the platform if they are newsworthy.

“One of the things we’re working really closely on with our product and engineering folks is, ‘How can we label that?'” Gadde said, not specifically referring to President Trump. “How can we put some context around it so people are aware that that content is actually a violation of our rules and it is serving a particular purpose in remaining on the platform.”

Gadde believes that this approach would hold political leaders accountable for their tweets and note the site’s issues with the posts while still allowing the public to see them. The website does have a limit on speech that is allowed on the platform even from politicians and public figures, however. Some tweets would be considered a bannable offense according to Gadde: “An example would be a direct violent threat against an individual that we wouldn’t leave on the platform because of the danger it poses to that individual,” she said.

This isn’t always the case on Twitter. Jack Dorsey’s company allowed verified accounts to make calls for violence against conservative high school students during the Covington hate hoax, for example.

Gadde noted that Twitter is working on limiting the visibility of “dehumanizing” tweets on the platform, adding warnings before tweets that users have to click in order to read the tweet. Gadde stated that this would “force people to acknowledge what this is and make the choice of whether to see it or not versus it just being on the platform with full visibility.”

A Mexican man has been arrested on alien smuggling charges after 54 illegal border-crossers were discovered in an overcrowded stash house in south El Paso, Texas, on March 26.

Special agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) made the discovery while executing a search warrant on the duplex in the 100 block of Seville Drive. The man, who has not be identified, currently remains in custody, according to a news release.

According to authorities, the property was used to harbor illegal aliens who were smuggled into the United States.

“The overcrowded conditions of this stash house in a residential neighborhood show the lack of respect human smugglers have for people who put their lives in smugglers’ hands,” said Jack P. Staton, special agent in charge of HSI El Paso.

“HSI continues to target transnational criminal organizations that rake in huge profits by illegally smuggling people with clear disregard for their safety and welfare,” he added.

ICE agents found 45 adult males, five adult females, two accompanied teenagers, and two unaccompanied teenagers. According to the federal agency, they had traveled from five different countries including Belize, Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico.

ICE officials said the illegal aliens had been kept in the stash house for more than a week and several of the individuals needed medical attention for injuries sustained while traveling to the United States.

Supreme Court Finds Investment Banker Following Orders Culpable

WASHINGTON—An investment banker who sent deceptive emails to prospective clean-energy investors greatly overstating a company’s financial health can’t escape responsibility for securities fraud because he was only following his supervisor’s directions, the Supreme Court ruled March 27.

Justice Stephen Breyer wrote the 6-to-2 majority opinion in Lorenzo v. SEC, rejecting the reasoning employed by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, when he was a member of the lower court panel that previously heard the case.

“By sending emails he understood to contain material untruths, [the petitioner] ‘employ[ed]’ a ‘device,’ ‘scheme,’ and ‘artifice to defraud’” within the meaning of U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission rules, and “engage[d] in a[n] act, practice, or course of business” that “operate[d] … as a fraud or deceit.”

The court rejected Lorenzo’s argument that as the mere “disseminator” of false information he had “not primarily violated” the rules.

“That is not what Congress intended. Rather, Congress intended to root out all manner of fraud in the securities industry. And it gave to the Commission the tools to accomplish the job.”

The case arose out of the business of Waste2Energy Holdings Inc. of Neptune Beach, Florida, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2013.

In 2009, investment banker Francis V. Lorenzo of Staten Island, New York-based Charles Vista LLC emailed would-be investors in an effort to sell $15 million in debentures secured only by Waste2Energy’s earning capacity.

The emails presented Waste2Energy as having $10 million in assets and more than $40 million in purchase orders, but when the emails were sent, the company acknowledged an audit had found its assets weren’t even worth $400,000.

Lorenzo’s boss and firm settled with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) but Lorenzo refused and an administrative law judge found he had broken the law by sending the emails, even though he hadn’t drafted them. The SEC banished Lorenzo from the securities industry for life and fined him $15,000.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected Lorenzo’s appeal in 2017.
