Labor Secretary Ambushed Over Epstein Plea Deal in House Budget Meeting

U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta was confronted in a House Appropriations subcommittee meeting on April 3 about his role in a 2008 plea arrangement involving alleged child rapist Jeffrey Epstein.

Acosta was the U.S. Attorney for southern Florida at the time, while Epstein—a billionaire financier—was accused of operating an international child sex ring at his Palm Beach, Florida, mansion and 72-acre private island estate in the Caribbean.

Epstein could have received life in prison under human trafficking laws; instead, he pleaded guilty to two state felony charges of prostitution and served only 13 months in the Palm Beach County jail.

“This isn’t the first time you’ve ignored human trafficking,” Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) told Acosta.

The purpose of the committee meeting was to discuss President Donald Trump’s 2020 Labor Department budget request, but it took a turn when, after an hour of departmental funding inquiries from other members, Clark cited proposed cuts to a program linked to the federal government’s inter-agency task force on human trafficking. From there, she launched into an attack.

“When you were the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, your office investigated Jeffrey Epstein and found that there had been a sexual abuse pyramid scheme that involved at least 36 underage girls ranging from age 14 to 17. This is horrifying stuff,” Clark said.

“Do you think he’s a monster?” she asked.

“He engaged in vile crimes,” Acosta responded.

Clark recounted how Epstein and his associates recruited girls from shopping malls, and invited social guests to participate in alleged sexual assaults and rapes. She also explained that child prostitution charges don’t exist under federal law, only child sex trafficking, and that each offense carries a sentence ranging from 10 years to life in prison.

“Epstein should have been looking at a potential sentence of 360 years, at a minimum. But that’s not what happened,” said Clark.

The exchange grew even more tense when Clark suggested that Acosta is unfit to serve as a presidential cabinet member.

After Christchurch shooting, Australia doubles down on being stampeded into catastrophically stupid tech laws

Australia leads "developed democracies" in the adoption of poorly thought-through, dangerous tech laws, thanks to its ban on working cryptography, rushed through in late 2018; now, with no debate or consultation, the Australian Parliament has passed a law that gives tech companies one hour to remove "violent materials" from their platforms with penalties for noncompliance of up to 10% of annual global turnover.

The law was rushed through in the wake of the Christchurch mosque shootings, after which the platforms completely failed to enforce their own policies, allowing millions of reposts of the footage streamed by the killer. This is part of a culture of negligence and willful blindness by the platforms, whose unwillingness to confront these matters is the stuff of legend and set them up for this outcome.

But if we think the platforms suck at moderation now, just wait until they can lose 10% of gross revenues for not having a sufficiently itchy trigger finger when it comes to censorship. Ghosn to quit as Renault director

PARIS (Jiji Press) — Carlos Ghosn, former chairman and chief executive officer of Renault SA, will step down as director of the French automaker, effective on June 12, the company said Wednesday.

Nissan Motor Co., an alliance partner of Renault, plans to hold a shareholders’ meeting next week to dismiss Ghosn as director. He was removed as Nissan chairman after his arrest in Tokyo in November for alleged financial misconduct.

Renault also said that an investigation into Ghosn’s alleged wrongdoing found serious questions about certain expenses at a Dutch joint venture with Nissan. The expenses “may amount several million euros since 2010,” Renault said.

The investigation also found that certain expenses incurred by Ghosn involve questionable and concealed practices and violations of Renault’s ethical principles, the company said. It did not elaborate.

Renault confirmed that it has informed the French judicial authorities of “potential issues” concerning payments made to a distributor in Oman.

According to French media and other sources, Ghosn allegedly funneled about €10 million ($11.2 billion) from Renault to the distributor for personal use.

The investigation by Renault also found that the compensation and benefits paid by the automaker to Ghosn were “in compliance with applicable regulations.”

Google staffers are in revolt, demanding the removal of Heritage Foundation president Kay Coles James from an advisory board the company convened on artificial intelligence. Court hearing: Trial may be delayed 10 days – Allison Mack & Kathy Russell hot in plea negotiations; Prosecution asks if Nxivm is still operating

Basically, the hearing today was about motions and jury selection. Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis made it clear that if he does have to postpone the trial, he would not want to postpone it a month, but only for a week to 10 days.

The injury from delay is greatest to the one incarcerated – meaning Keith Raniere.

Judge Garaufis said he would not be willing to postpone the trial to the fall unless Keith – who is in pretrial detention – said he was willing to delay the trial. There is no indication at all that Keith is prepared to do that.

The government, on the other hand, did not seem opposed to a delay of the start of the trial – and said it is trying hard to meet its obligations to turn over discovery materials to the defendants. But it also said there are several technical issues regarding those discover materials.

There was a lot of discussion centered around whether the government can meet all its obligations before the trial starts if the currently scheduled start date is not moved.

Apparently, there are still some documents related to Nxivm that may or may not be privileged. Resolving that issue is going to take time – especially since, according to the prosecution, there are 20,000 of those unresolved documents.

The government said it wants to know if Nxivm is still operating. There was no official representative of Nxivm in the courtroom today to respond to the question.

The judge decided he is going to withhold jurors’ names throughout the trial – and even after the trial. They will be semi-sequestered in the sense that they will be cut off from all news about the trial until it is over.

The judge said anonymity is important where there might be some danger to the jurors. Although he doesn’t feel there is necessarily any danger to the jurors in this case, he doesn’t want them bothered by the media.

The #3500 materials [FBI reports of interviews] are due to be turned over to the defense by April 12.

She did tell me at one point that there was a self-improvement group in the area that could help those struggling in their business. I didn’t give her the time of day. I found out through the Frank Report of her involvement with NXIVM.

I had not seen her in a while and thought the publicity would keep her hiding for a period of time. Then, this past autumn, she appeared at another networking event and actually won the door prize, a book called NOT EVERYONE GETS A TROPHY by Bruce Tulgan.

She is still pitching KAR-MA and most others don’t have a clue. I just recently mentioned her involvement with NXIVM to a fellow networker and that friend and fellow networker had a hard time believing me! I pointed to the Frank Report and said, “search her name”!

The point is, she is still promoting KAR-MA and probably still not paying her taxes!
