FAKE HATE: Jewish Family 'Staged' Antisemitic Attack Against Themselves, Vandalized Own Business

The Jewish owners of a kosher cafe in Winnipeg have been charged by police for staging a violent attack against themselves and spray-painting their own business with antisemitic graffiti.

Their cafe was the target of repeated antisemitic vandalism the past few months.

From The Canadian Press:

What looked like an anti-Semitic attack at a Winnipeg cafe that drew public concern and political condemnation was not a hate crime but an alleged sham staged by owners of the business, police said Wednesday.

Officers responded last Thursday to a report that a woman who worked at the BerMax Caffe and Bistro was assaulted and that the business was vandalized and spray-painted with hate-related graffiti. It was the night before Passover.

After a lengthy investigation involving 25 officers and 1,000 hours of investigative work, police said they charged the three owners of the cafe — including the woman who was reportedly assaulted — with public mischief.

Police announced on Facebook they arrested BerMax Caffe and Bistro owners Alexander Berent, 56, Oxana Berent, 48 and Maxim Berent, 29.

These individuals are all owners of the café. They are each charged with one count of Public Mischief and released. Public Mischief (CCC 140 (1)) occurs when an individual, with intent to mislead, causes a peace officer to enter on or continue an investigation based on a false statement or causing another person to be suspected of having committed an offence to divert suspicion from themselves.

Investigators believe that the initial report of a robbery was staged. Further, the anti-semitic graffiti and vandalism were also falsely reported as being done by outside suspects.

"The restaurant was founded in 2015 by the Berent family – Jewish-Ukrainian immigrants who came to Canada in 2005 by way of Israel – and was operated by Oxana Berent and her son, Maxim," CJN reports.

France's Macron responds to yellow vests with promise of reforms

(not really notable, but Macron just gave a speech about the yellow vests and a "news story" quand meme)

French President Emmanuel Macron has given a long-awaited response to the yellow vest protest movement with promises of tax cuts, higher pensions and a reform of the civil service.

Despite insisting that order must return, he acknowledged a "lack of trust" in the establishment.

Protests, sometimes violent, started in November over rises in fuel costs but widened to cover a range of grievances over economic inequality.

Mr Macron said he stood by his reforms.

His speech was originally scheduled for 15 April but was postponed after the devastating fire at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris.

President Macron recognised that at the core of the movement were "fair demands".

US announces watering down of Iran IRGC sanctions

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo yesterday published two notices in the Federal Register, watering down sanctions on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The notices clarified that countries and businesses dealing with the guard would not be banned from travelling to the US.

In one notice, Pompeo said the sanctions “shall not apply to any ministry, department, agency, division, or other group or subgroup within any foreign government” unless that entity is covered by existing US sanctions.

Since US President Donald Trump relegated the IRGC to the US International Terrorism List on 15 April, there was widespread concern that US officials would need to sever ties with countries who deal with Iran and the IRGC.

Without the exemption, the US would be unable to receive diplomats from countries like Lebanon or Iraq.

Iranian linked, Hezbollah, is active in Lebanon and the IRGC also support a number of Shia militias in Iraq. The waiver will allow for personnel to continue to work in these countries on military and diplomatic efforts.

In the notice, Pompeo said he had waived the travel bans for US foreign policy and national security interests.

Elsewhere, the move is seen as a weakening of the measures amid growing concern within the US that the Trump administration will fail to enforce the Iranian oil sanctions.

The sanctions on the IRGC are still in place, restricting their ability to import and export goods and preventing other countries from trading with them. Its members are still banned from international travel.

On Monday, the Trump administration announced it would not renew sanction waivers for countries importing Iranian oil. China, India, and Turkey are three of those importers whose waivers will expire on 2 May.

Turkey has already slammed the US decision. “We had indicated privately that zero was coming and now we’re here,” a senior administration official said on Monday, referencing Turkey’s concerns.

Macron offers tax cuts to yellow vests

Emmanuel Macron has pledged tax cuts but says the French would also have to work more as he outlined his response to months of anti-government protests.

Macron is under pressure to quell nearly six months of "yellow vest" demonstrations that have brought weekly havoc to cities nationwide.

As US Government Strangles Iran’s Economy, Google ‘Suffocates’ Iranian Media

The recent shutdown of PressTV and HispanTV’s YouTube and Gmail accounts are more examples of the continued effort by the US government to silence Iranian media outlets, Alex Rubinstein, a journalist for MintPress News, told Sputnik.

“I think that this is part of a larger trend of cracking down on Iranian media,” Rubinstein told Radio Sputnik’s By Any Means Necessary on Wednesday. “Just as this was happening, the United States was saying that we want to bring down Iranian oil exports to zero. Well, it seems like they’re also trying to bring down Iranian expression down to zero through these kinds of moves.”

“It’s a message which both strangles their economy and also suffocates their voice,” he added.

​Google barred PressTV and HispanTV, an Iranian Spanish-language outlet, from accessing their respective YouTube and Gmail accounts without notice and without an explanation detailing what Google policies were violated, the outlets recently reported.

Although content from both outlets is still viewable, the organizations are unable to upload new content.

Israeli media outlets have speculated that the order was handed down by Google after HispanTV issued a report claiming imprisoned Palestinians were being used for medical experiments.

“On its face, that sounds like that could be questionable,” Rubinstein said of the speculation. “But there have been a number of other outlets to carry this report, and it wasn’t like they were pulling this information out of thin air — it came from a Palestinian politician in Israel… he made this allegation, and they were citing him properly.”

The journalist told hosts Eugene Puryear and Sean Blackmon that while it’s unclear what initiated Google’s action, it seems in line with the behavior of tech companies vying to “stifle Iranian media” at the behest of the US government.

“These tech companies are basically extensions of the US empire. You look at all that’s going on with NATO and the US government trying to push back on Chinese 5G — well, the point of that is that [the US] can’t spy so well if [the 5G grid is] Chinese,” Rubinstein said.

“The American government has a dominance over these companies, and we see that with the ban on PressTV, and we see that with the other countries that have been targeted, which are primarily Russia and Venezuela.”

“It’s hard to imagine that this is just a coincidence,” he added.

Earlier this month, after the US formally designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization, popular photo and video-sharing platform Instagram began banning pages belonging to various Iranian military officials. The site later explained that the move was in line with the US’ designation.

“I understand to have a policy against spreading terrorist messages on a social media platform… but we didn’t see these crackdowns for terrorist organizations like the Free Syrian Army, or any of the other supposedly moderate rebels in Syria,” Rubinstein told Blackmon.

“We see them [crackdowns] for the supposed terrorist that are enemies of the United States… It seems like the tech companies are all too happy to follow in lockstep.”

If he were to sit down, call Nancy Pelosi up, say ‘we’re going up to Camp David. You bring your immigration team, I’ll bring mine. I’ll leave Stephen Miller at home,’ and we will actually sort out a compromise here. Where, cause Democrats were ready to fund more border security, but at the same time we’re going to create a legal pathway for people here, limits the number of ICE arrests and we’re going to have a rational inflow of people,” he continued.

The Trump administration has enacted a series of new policies in an attempt to curb illegal immigration. Aside from his desire to build the wall, the administration has begun cracking down on the “catch and release” policy, tightening HUD’s requirements, while also signing a memorandum on Monday that recommended travel restrictions on countries who have a high rate of visa overstays.

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman explained on Wednesday on CNN how he thinks the U.S. government can solve the situation at the border, following his trip there.

Friedman’s appearance on the network corresponded with his op-ed from the day before, in which he described the port of entry at San Diego a “troubling scene.”

Amazon Jumps And Dumps As AWS Growth Slows, Outlook Disappoints

Last quarter, when Amazon reported otherwise respectable earnings, the market hammered the stock after the company guided to the lowest revenue growth since 2001. And, as the company reported moments ago, while its guidance may have been slightly downbeat, it wasn't too far off as Amazon reported Q1 net sales of $59.7BN, just above the $59.68BN consensus estimate, while generating an impressive $7.09 in Q1 EPS, well above the $4.67 expected.

Amazon Web Services rose 42% to $7.70BN, Exp. $7.67BN; this compares to growth of 45% last quarter and 46% the quarter before.

The good news here is that whereas Q1 revenue did come in slightly better than expected, it still showed a significant slowdown, rising 17% in Q1, the slowest growth pace in 4 years. Looking ahead, the slowdown is expected to accelerate, as the company now expects Q2 net sales of $59.5BN to $63.5BN, with the midpoint of $61.5BN coming in below the Wall Street consensus estimate of $62.4BN. If revenue comes in right on the midpoint, it would represent another top-line slowdown of 16.3% in Q2.

That said, the company's profit margin nearly doubled, from 3.8% last year to an impressive 7.4% in Q1 2019, largely thanks to the increasing contribution from AWS.

Slightly more concerning was the slowdown in AWS revenue, which rose 42%, down from 45% last quarter.

Meanwhile, Amazon's other revenue, which includes Amazon's advertising business, grew only 36%, a sharp drop from the 97% growth in Q4 and the 132% growth it had a year ago. One possible reason for the slowdown is that Kroger, Walmart, Target and other big retailers are building out their own in-house digital advertising businesses.

Russia launched a new Belgorod submarine designed to carry nuclear drones capable of creating devastating tidal waves. The submarine, known as Special Project 09852, is a nuclear-powered special purpose and research submarine, Russian News Agency TASS reported Tuesday. The Russian Navy said the submarine is designed to carry “Poisedon” drones and will be used starting in 2020 according to TASS.

The drones are nuclear torpedoes with ranges up to 100 megatons and speeds of 125 mph, which could send catastrophic waves of radiation throughout the ocean and onto continents for decades, according to Business Insider. Yun also told Reuters he could not comment on diplomatic exchanges. But in an interview with CNN on Thursday, he said he was given broad orders to secure Warmbier’s release and he understood the instructions came directly from Trump.

“Yes, my orders were completely: do whatever you can to get Otto back,” he told CNN. Yun said he understood that money had been exchanged in previous releases of U.S. prisoners and was justified as “hospital costs,” but he gave no further details.

Representatives for the State Department did not respond to a request for comment.

Several agents walked into City Hall Thursday morning and left with boxes throughout the morning. City Solicitor Andre Davis said the search was contained to Mayor Pugh’s office in the second-floor suites. FBI and IRS agents were seen raiding the mayor’s home on Ellamont Avenue early Thursday morning, at one point an agent walked into Pugh’s home with a case of water. They left with more than 12 boxes of items from her home.

“There was no ‘raid’ of the firm as reported in the media and the agents did not conduct a search of the firm. The agents also did not seek or obtain any attorney-client privileged communications with the Mayor, or any other information or documents from the firm or its clients. The agents were polite and courteous and the process was conducted in an expeditious and professional manner,” They said in their statement.

“We will continue to vigorously defend the Mayor, who is entitled the presumption of innocence,” They concluded.

I was watching a video by Dave Janda from Operation Freedom (2nd link) that he speaks about the 21 trillion missing from the DoD and HUD and it made me think about the video that will get Trump elected dropped by Q so many times that Q says to listen closely to. POTUS says the election had trillions of dollars at stake. What if he and Q team know who has and where the money is and it can be retrieved and given back to We The People. Erase the national debt. Fix our infrastructure and healthcare. So many wrongs could be righted. If you have time listen to them both and let me know if I am off base.

Exclusive–Sen. Marco Rubio: At Their Own Peril, Countries Embrace China

China is playing a zero-sum game internationally and willing to win at all costs. That certainly won’t be Chinese President Xi Jinping’s message to world leaders at the second Belt and Road Initiative Forum in Beijing this week, but that is the reality.

For the last two decades, China fooled the world into believing it would embrace the rules-based international order and become a responsible stakeholder. Instead, China has used its membership in the World Trade Organization as an instrument for its economic advancement aimed directly at the expense of other more developed member states. Moreover, it has tightened its one-party authoritarian rule, increased repression of domestic dissent, and escalated human rights abuses within its borders. And it is building up its military’s might—including new capabilities to menace Taiwan, Japan, and other neighbors to threaten U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific region, and to project power globally.

China now is trying to fool the world again by luring foreign governments to join its Belt and Road Initiative with extravagant promises of Chinese investment for their infrastructure projects. Some countries have already learned hard lessons from Beijing’s debt-trap diplomacy. For example, Sri Lanka was forced to give a Chinese state-owned company majority control of its $1.3 billion Hambantota port for 99 years after it defaulted on a Chinese loan, and Pakistan is now seeking to drastically curb borrowing from China as it faces a mounting debt crisis. Yet these and other cautionary tales aren’t deterring everyone. Last March, Italy became the first G7 nation to sign on to the Belt and Road Initiative. Alarmingly, the United Kingdom appears willing to allow some Chinese hardware into the development of their 5G network. More countries in Europe and other regions may soon follow. This is stunningly naive.

China’s mercantilist goal is simple—undermine foreign competition by stealing intellectual property and trade secrets, and artificially propping up Chinese state-directed actors at the expense of its trading “partners.” In addition to debt-trap diplomacy, Beijing’s long list of aggressive tactics also includes targeting U.S. and other foreign industries for eventual displacement, violating foreign sanctions laws and export controls, and working through state-directed actors, like Huawei and ZTE, to steal trade secrets and gain unfair advantages. Indeed, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative reports that China’s intellectual property theft costs the U.S. as much as $600 billion annually—an amount that exceeds the collective profits of the top 50 companies on last year’s Fortune 500 list. Chinese state-directed theft of American ingenuity amounts to the greatest transfer of wealth in human history.

China’s actions are not just part of an unprecedented effort to supplant America’s role as the leading economic and military power. Rather, they are in direct contradiction to the most deeply held values by the U.S. and fellow democracies. They are also deeply rooted in Chinese Communist Party’s view of history—that it is China’s rightful place to be the most powerful nation on earth, and that the last hundred years are an aberration. Look no further than the target date set by President Xi for China to cement its global dominance: 2049, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

As we in the U.S. are learning—sometimes more slowly than we should—China’s long-term threats to national security and economic security far outweigh the short-term benefits from Chinese foreign investment or increased exports to China. Unfortunately, it seems many countries around the world are either unaware of China’s long-term threats or else willfully ignoring the real risks in exchange for access to Chinese markets, loans, and other short-term economic benefits.

China’s rise poses this century’s most significant threat not only to the security and economic interests of America and other democracies, but also to the values of freedom and openness that we hold dear. Beijing’s upcoming Belt and Road Initiative Forum and other efforts to woo the world do not change this. So long as China remains under the Communist Party’s totalitarian rule, the free world must remain clear-eyed about China’s challenge to our hard-won international order.
