Foreign Secretary says Britain will keep Iran tanker, but wants their own returned

Though it is considered virtually a foregone conclusion that the British-held Iranian tanker Grace 1, seized on July 4 and the Iranian-held British tanker Stena Impero, taken weeks later, will ultimately be traded for one another, British officials continue to insist that no such “swap” could happen under international law.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Britain won’t consider a swap and is insisting on international law being upheld. At the same time, he’s arguing that if Iran gives Britain back their tanker, they would be accepted as a responsible member of the international community, albeit a member whose tanker Britain is still going to keep.

British officials argue that the seizure of the Grace 1 is legal based on EU sanctions, which forbid Syria buying oil. There is substantial doubt that the EU can actually enforce this on non-member nations.

Iran says the tanker they captured hit a fishing boat and then refused to contact them, which is likely more legally enforceable since it happened in Iranian waters. The Iranians, however, have made clear that swapping tankers is all they really want.

Like Jeffrey Epstein, Bullion Banks Get Sweet Deals from the Justice Department

First, a bank’s commodities trading department takes metals investors for a ride like unwitting victims in the back of Jeffrey Epstein’s “Lolita Express.”

Now federal prosecutors have extended the same sort of cozy non-prosecution agreement to shield the bank itself from a criminal indictment.

Federal prosecutors signed a non-prosecution agreement in June with Merrill Lynch Commodities, Inc. (MLCI) and Bank of America (Merrill’s parent company) for rigging the precious metals markets.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) found gold and silver traders working at Merrill Lynch had “schemed to deceive other market participants by injecting materially false and misleading information into the precious metals futures market.”

The agreement references “thousands of fraudulent orders” – intended artificially to move the markets up or down by “spoofing” other traders and investors – over a period of 6 years.

Two traders have been indicted on criminal charges so far. The non-prosecution agreement was only for the mega bank, not for its more expendable staff.

The bank gets off with a less-than-consequential $25 million fine, a promise not to do it again, and a commitment to set up more controls… which they can self-monitor.

The generous agreement was granted in part because “MLCI has no prior criminal history.” The prosecutors who drafted the agreement must not have had access to the Department’s own files, or the internet.

Suffice it to say the malfeasance covered here isn’t the first bit of shady activity Merrill has been involved in. DOJ prosecutors also didn’t take into consideration Bank of America’s own record. Both organizations have been implicated in schemes, scandals, and frauds going back decades.

Here is a partial list of what the bankers have been accused of doing to clients, shareholders and other victims (a more complete accounting can be found here):

Screwing the State of California as its Bond Trustee

Charging excessive fees

Withholding information from shareholders

Foreclosure fraud

Deceptive sales practices

Maybe prosecutors limited their definition of “criminal history” to past criminal convictions. There would undoubtedly be a lot more of those if Justice Department prosecutors stopped settling and signing non-prosecution agreements and instead started taking the banks to trial for their role in crimes.

Bank of America has a history of cutting deals with the Department of Justice.

An OVERVIEW OF THE POLITICAL HISTORY IN HOLLYWOOD (CINEMA)

Propaganda. War. Disney. Warner Brothers. Stanley Kubrick. Matrix. Dirty politics.

I will be focusing my digging on political ideology in films and television FIRST, then political documentaries.

Early giants such as D.W. Griffith, seen as a pioneer of the film industry, made films that were both “films an audience would want to watch as well as be sources of instruction and enlightenment” (pg. 4 Cogan & Kelso). Griffith often made movies that championed the poor from wealthy interests, such as A Corner of Wheat (1909). Even films like Bannister Merwin’s The Usurure’s Grip were made in partnership between production companies and organizations as early as the 1912; in this case, the Edison Company and the Russell Sage Foundation. The Usurure’s Grip (1912) was about a couple who fell further and further into debt until they were rescued in the film by the same company that funded the production of it, playing a pivotal role both on and off screen. This was perhaps the first precursor to modern television and the current state of advertising.

WWI would have a lasting impact on the film and television industry. While Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and Mary Pickford had worked on war bond drives, many were “disillusioned wit the war in it’s aftermath” (pg. 6 Cogan & Kelso). Having begun with light material in the 1920s (The Big Parade, by King Vidor 1925), Chaplin’s films became ever more political, until “his socialist views would later cause him to become a controversial figure in the U.S. until he was forced out of the country in the 1950s” (Pg. 6 Cogan & Kelso).

Pickford, Chaplin, Fairbanks, and Griffith incorporated UNITED ARTISTS as a joint venture on February 5, 1919… A distribution company all to themselves so they would not need to fold to a production company’s concerns when it came to political films. Each held a 25 percent stake in the preferred shares and a 20 percent stake in the common shares of the joint venture, with the remaining 20 percent of common shares held by lawyer and advisor William Gibbs McAdoo. McAdoo was, at this time, son-in-law and former Treasury Secretary of then-President Woodrow Wilson. Hiram Abrams was its first managing director, and the company established its headquarters at 729 Seventh Avenue in New York City. UNITED ARTISTS is today owned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (50%) and Annapurna Pictures (50%).

By 1927, filmmakers had already begun to face a new form of censorship, in form of the Hayes Code (no evil could win in films, no partial nudity, no drugs, etc). This was both a limit in political and moral aspects, as many previous works were deemed unacceptable to the American public. This was the first time the industry attempted to reign in some of the maverick writers, producers, and directors who wished to push the limit and challenge studios with controversial films. The Hayes Code would be followed for several decades.

The influence of Frank Capra on political films and pop culture is “incalculable”. Forbidden (1932), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) are all prime examples of outsiders taking on political corruption.

It’s not just Trump. California’s new law could keep other presidential candidates off its ballot

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Tuesday requiring President Donald Trump to release the last five years of his tax returns to get on the state’s 2020 primary ballot.

But Senate Bill 27, dubbed the “Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act,” goes well beyond Trump. It includes future gubernatorial candidates and will also affect several Democratic presidential candidates.

Of the 12 highest-polling candidates, four would not currently qualify for a spot on California’s ballot, including former Vice President Joe Biden – who has only released three years of tax returns.

“This bill is all about equal opportunity and transparency for all, no matter whether you are a Democrat or Republican,” said state Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, who authored the proposal. “Trump is absolutely a strong example of the need for this legislation, but he’s not the only one.”

Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro, Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and venture capitalist Andrew Yang have not yet disclosed their tax information.

Sawyer Hackett, a spokesman for Castro, said the 2020 contender “will release his taxes well before Iowa caucuses” are held on Feb. 3, 2020.

When asked about his tax information in a March interview, Yang told The Sacramento Bee, “I’m about to release my tax returns. They’re very boring. You know, I’ll have some financial disclosure.” In April, he told Mother Jones he’d release the information in the “coming weeks.” Months later, he has yet to release his tax records. Yang’s campaign did not respond when asked for an update.

Biden’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment, nor did Gabbard’s.

But the issue of disclosing tax returns to get on California’s 2020 primary ballot could prove moot if Trump prevails in an all-but-certain legal challenge.

Tim Murtaugh, director of communications for Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign, previously told The Bee that “the Constitution is clear on the qualifications for someone to serve as president and states cannot add additional requirements on their own.”

Newsom’s predecessor, Gov. Jerry Brown, didn’t release his own tax returns and vetoed a similar bill in 2017, warning that it “may not be constitutional” and could establish a “slippery slope” precedent.

Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School, said California will try to argue the new law taking effect immediately is about transparency over politics, despite the fact it cleared the Legislature on a party-line vote.

“This is politically motivated, which doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea,” Levinson said. “It means they’re trying to make a systemic change with the new president that they didn’t like.”

The issue of Trump’s taxes has received a lot of attention on the 2020 campaign trail, with scores of Democrats trying to outdo each other on transparency.

California Sen. Kamala Harris has disclosed the most tax information among the crowded field of 25 candidates by releasing 15 years of returns. Of the 12 highest-polling candidates, Harris is followed by Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren — who released 13 years, 12 years and 11 years of tax returns, respectively.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke have all disclosed 10 years of tax returns.

Other states could soon follow in California’s footsteps. Records from the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Election Legislation Database show 17 other states considered bills this year to require presidential candidates to disclose their tax information in order to get their name on the state’s ballot.

Bills from 10 states outside California are still alive, and five of them — Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Washington — have already cleared one chamber this year. Hawaii’s plan calls for presidential candidates to release their most recent tax return, while North Carolina’s proposal would force candidate to disclose the last 10 years of information. All other states with surviving bills match California’s five-year requirement, though some states want to place identical requirements on candidates running for vice president.

“The longer Trump fights, the more momentum this bill receives,” McGuire said. “We believe this is a reasonable request.”

WWII drastically changed the field of film making once again, as many of those working in the film industry wanted to do their part for the war effort. Most films during this time focused on war and patriotism. WARNER BROTHERS were “particularly keen for U.S. involvement in the war” and were in full production as soon as the decision was made (Pg 7 Cogan & Kelso). Casablanca (1942), Hitler’s Madmen (1943), and The Hitler Gang (1944) were major war films Warner Brothers worked on. Others were designed as pure propaganda, such as the pro-Russian Mission to to Moscow (1943) or The North Star (1943). The US Government began using the best American talent to educate American soldiers on the reasons they were fighting. As many were isolationists, the government knew it had to be both informative and entertaining. The result was the Why We Fight series, directed by Frank Capra with animation from WALT DISNEY (Pg. 8 Cogan & Kelso).

This was done by equating Nazis to American gangsters and often telling “half truths in order to convince the troops”. Although the films were not very effective (according to later studies), this set off a chain of events, sparking “American training films” that would be used in schools and civic groups for the next two decades.

After the war was over, film makers turned to other issues, such as the plight of returning veterans (The Best Years of Our Lives 1946). By the late 1940s however, Hollywood began to shy away from controversial plots once again, as the Justice Department’s Antitrust Laws hampered down. By the 1950s, a lot of movie villains weren’t even of this Earth. Films of the 1950s: Cold War and Alien Invasions. Here we had a wave of science fiction, often mixed or along side anti-communism motifs. The original Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) was one of the first films that can be seen as an allegory, not only of alien invasion but also alien ideology in a way that resembled communism, but still being open to interpretation depending on which side of the isle one was on. Many films touched on the nuclear age, aliens, and ideology that lead to the loss of humanity (Godzilla, The Thing).

A Face in the Crowd (1957) was the first attempt to merge politics with not just films, but television. The end of the 1950s were a transitional period between old media and new, the new being much more experimental. The 1960s and 70s led to more and more controversy, as independent films continued to push the limits and challenge the status quo… fitting to other events we know from the 1960s. Hollywood was no longer shy in approaching complex social problems. Russ Meyer’s camp classic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) or The Trip (1967) were all about hippies, drugs, and free love. Other films were more explicitly political and well made, though Meyer’s work was a decent example for the decade. As the 60s progressed, we had films like James Bond Dr. No (1962), or The Manchurian Candidate (1962)., where communist agents almost doom America.

A major turning point for political films was the work of Stanley Kubrick. More radical and subversive than any political film before it, Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) presented a chaotic and paranoid script that audiences enjoyed. A classic Cold War film must also be mentioned, James Coburn’s The President’s Analyst (1967). Despite being at war in Vietnam, Hollywood avoided making movies strictly about war, with the exception of John Wayne’s The Green Berets (1968). This would be the last major film to be made about Vietnam until the 1970s.

Race and the civil rights movement was in full swing during the 60s as well. Films like In the Heat of the Night (1967) and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967) furthered the civil rights discussion in America, largely regarded as positive. Race films quickly turned into a “blaxploitation” craze as the 1970s rolled around. Shaft (1971) and Foxy Brown (1974) did not exactly further civil rights.

Tim Robbins brings us into the 90s, with left leaning abrasive angry political films like Bob Roberts (1992), Dead Man Walking (1995), and Cradle Will Rock (1999). Some looked to the past events and presidents, such as Oliver Stone’s Nixon (1995) and the conspiracies surrounding John F. Kennnedy in JFK (1991), films that had problems finding funding and partners to release it, but ultimately changing the political landscape in Hollywood.

As the Clinton era began in 1993, more films were given the green light, “leading to some of the more overt nonwar related films of the past several decades” (Pg. 14 Cogan & Kelso). “The concept of the liberal President, wise and all knowing, became a reality (at least in film) in Dave (1993) and The American President (1995), where the presidents are shown as decent people, surrounded, as in a Capra film, by schemers and political hacks” (Pg. 14 Cogan & Kelso). As the 90s progressed, some films targeted the corruption of large industries, such as the Warren Beaty vehicle Bullworth (1998). “The optimism of the Clinton years seemed to lead to new optomism among the major studios” (Pg. 14 Cogan & Kelso). Even the Clinton sex scandals could not damage the left’s fascination of Bill Clinton, such as Primary Colors (1998). George Clooney’s film Goodnight and Goodluck (2005) hit a nerve. Other films looked at contemporary politics like The Kingdom (2007) and the overtly political Rendition (2007).

An OVERVIEW OF THE POLITICAL HISTORY IN HOLLYWOOD (CINEMA)

The British man John Grierson was accredited with founding the documentary style of film making we know today. Michael Renov called it “the more or less artful reshaping of the historical world” in 1993. Documentaries are often interchangeably referred to as nonfiction film, yet the line between fiction and nonfiction is inevitably a blurry one. To Grierson, the documentary involves “the creative treatment of reality” (Grieson 1966). Like Hollywood, these directors often change certain aspects or add music, setting a tone to the pictures played. See it Now, by CBS, was one of the first programs available in documentary format. In 1958, it was cancelled and replaced by CBS Reports. Readers were exposed to the shaping of a president to becoming a likable TV commodity. To accomplish this, McGinniss claimed Nixon’s advisors carefully planned each of his TV appearances. Historians are overall not conviced by his claims, saying he hand-picked evidence to support his claims.

Pat Robertson on CBN founded The 700 Club, first broadcast in 1966. It was political in its nature, and was later picked up by ABC and Trinity Broadcasting. Although the show claims to be apolitical, Robertson has used the space to voice political concerns.

The real kicker came in 1989. The Simpsons, but not in the way you think. Commercials came out against John Kerry’s service (or lack thereof) in Vietnm that really, really started a discussion. Although the advertising did not reach many people, the word of mouth became viral. Kerry did not fight back enough to prevent his political campaign from being damaged. It took Kerry two weeks to respond, not by advertisement, but by speech. The results of the “swift boat attack” forced Kerry to focus on defending himself against an advocacy group and not an opponent. Many people this played a vital role in George W. H. Bush’s re-election.

Televised wars were partially seen during Vietnam, but it wasn’t until the first Iraq war where satellite images were broadcast to viewers. During the 1970s and 80s, war came closer to families at home, not geographically, but through their television sets. During this time, the Nixon tapes were being fought out over the televsion.

The fact is, that each of you has helped protect and preserve our national treasures here in Jamestown, what a debt, we owe you a great debt, thank you, what a job.

On this day in 1619, just a mile south of where we are gathered now, 22 newly elected members of the House of Burgesses assembled in a small wooden church.

They were adventurers and explorers, farmers and planters, soldiers, scholars and clergymen. All had struggled all had suffered, and all had sacrificed in persuit of one wild and very improbable dream… they called that dream, [VIRGINIA].

It had been only 13 years since 3 small ships, The Susan Constant, The Godspeed and The Discovery, set sail across a vast ocean.

They carried 104 settlers, to carve out a home on the edge of this uncharted continent, they came from GOD & COUNTRY, they came in search of opportunity and fortune, and they journeyed into the unknown with only meager supplies, long odds and the power of their christian faith. Upon reaching Cape Henry, at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, 1607, a long time ago… the first men of the Virginia company erected a cross upon the shore, they gave thanks to GOD and they asked his blessing for their great undertaking. In the months and years ahead, they would dearly need it. The dangers were unperil. The Jamestown settlers arrived in America amid one of the worst droughts in over 7 centuries. Of 104, 66 died by the year’s end.

They left Jamestown deserted, they just sailed away never to come back.

But they had not gone far down the James River when they came to the answer of their prayers, ships baring a year’s worth of supplies, and more than 300 new settlers.

As we can see today on this great anniversary, it would not be the last time that GOD looked out for [Virginia].

At that first assembly, the weather was so hot, that one legislator actually died, mercifully the session was cut very short. But before adjourning, the assembly passed laws on taxation, agriculture and trade with the indians. With true American optimism, the assembly even endorsed a plan to build a world class university in the still rugged wilderness, it was a vision that would one day be fulfilled just miles away from here, at the college of William and Merrit, GREAT PLACE.

As we mark the first representative and legislature at Jamestown, our Nation also reflects upon an anniversary from that same summer 4 centuries ago.

In August 1619, the first enslaved African Americans in the English Colonies arrived in Virginia.

It was the beginning of a barbaric trade in human lives.

Today in honor, we remember every sacred soul who suffered the horrors of slavery and the anguish of bondage. More than 150 years later, at America’s founding, our Declaration of Independence recognized the immortal truth that ALL men are created EQUAL.

Yet it would ultimately take a civil war, 85 years after that document was signed to abolish the evil of slavery. It would take more than another century for our nation, in the words of Martin Luther King Jr, to “live out the true meaning of it’s creed and extend the blessings of freedom to ALL AMERICANS”.

In the face of grave oppression and grave injustice, African Americans have built, strengthened, inspired, uplifted, protected, defended and sustained our nation from it’s very earliest days.

Last year I was privileged to sign the law establishing a commission to commemorate the arrival of the first Africans into English colonies and the 400 years of African American history that have followed. That was an incredible day, that was an incredible event… today we are grateful to be joined by that commission's chairman Dr. Joseph Green.

In the decades that followed that first legislative assembly, the democratic tradition established here laid deep roots all across Virginia. It spread up and down the Atlantic coast.

One fact was quickly established for ALL TIME…

In America, we are not ruled from afar.

Americans govern ourselves, and so help us GOD we always will.

Right here in Virginia, your predecessors came to Williamsburg from places you all know very well, there were names such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Patrick Henry, George With, and Richard Henry Lee… incredible names. Incredible names.

Self government in Virginia did not just give us a state we love, it gave us the country we love, United States of America.

When Madison drafted the first amendment to our constitution he drew inspiration from Virginia’s statute for Religious Freedom… As John Adams wrote in Philly just before the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, we all look up to Virginia for examples… and as Patrick Henry rose to speak his famous words @ St. John’s church in Richmond, he spoke in defence of a tradition that began more than 150 years before, at Jamestown.

It was a heritage, those patriots would fight a long war of independence to defend, it is a heritage that countless Americans have fought and died for to secure in all of those centuries since.

In our time, we must vigorously defend those cherished democratic that have made our beloved republic the envy of the entire world… and it still is, as much as ever before and maybe more.

Our hard won culture of self government must be nourished, protected, and constantly preserved, that is why we must speak out strongly against anyone who would take power away from citizens, individuals, and state governments such as yours.

In America, THE PEOPLE will forever rule.

THE PEOPLE will forever reign…

and THE PEOPLE will forever be sovereign.

From the first legislative assembly down to today, America has been the story of citizens who take ownership of their future and control of their destiny. That is what self rule is all about… Everyday Americans coming together to take action to build, to create, to seize opportunity, to pursue the common good, and to never stop striving for GREATNESS.

4 centuries ago, one early voyager in Jamestown captured the the spirit of confidence and daring that has always powered our great experiment of self government, he wrote:

“We hope to plant a nation, where none before have stood”

In that hope, the men and women of Jamestown achieved success beyond anything they could’ve possibly imagined. They started the nation that settled the wilderness, won our independence, tamed the wild west, ended slavery, secured civil rights, invented the airplane, vanquished the nazis, brought communism to it’s knees and placed our great American flag on the face of the moon.

And in a program that has just started, some day very soon, American astronauts will plant our beautiful stars and stripes on the surface of Mars.

But among all of America’s towering achievements, none exceeds the triumph that we are here to celebrate today:

“Our nation’s priceless culture of freedom, independence, equality and justice, self determination under GOD.”

That culture, is the source of who we are, it is our prized inheritance,it is our proudest legacy, it is among the greatest human accomplishments in the history of the world… and I congratulate you because it started RIGHT HERE.

Now we must go bravely into the future, just as those bold explorers first entered into this majestic land. We must call upon the same scale of imagination, the same thirst for knowledge, the same love of adventure, the same unrelenting courage and the same total determination to prevail. Above all, we must be proud of our heritage, united in our purpose and filled in confidence in our shared great great great American destiny.

In America no challenge is too great.

No journey is too tough. No task is too large, NO DREAM IS BEYOND OUR REACH.

When we set our sights on the summit, nothing can stand in our way…

America always get’s the job done.. America always wins!

That is why, after 400 years of glorious American democracy, we have returned to this place to declare to ALL OF THE WORLD… that the United States of America, and the great commonwealth of Virginia, are just getting started.

Our future is bigger, bolder, and brighter than ever before.

It has been a great honor for me to be with you this morning, I want to thank you…

Dissident billionaire outlines Beijing's four-pronged influence strategy

China is conducting an aggressive disinformation and influence campaign designed to block the re-election of President Trump in 2020, according to a dissident Chinese billionaire who until recently was close to senior Beijing leaders.

Guo Wengui, an exiled Chinese real estate tycoon-turned-anti-communist critic, said in an interview that details of the influence operation were disclosed recently by Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan in Beijing.

The campaign has been underway since the 2018 mid-term election and involves enlisting pro-China elements inside the United States to end the Trump administration after four years.

"China has been protesting western powers trying to interfere in the domestic politics of China but in fact China is not only trying interfere in the domestic politics of the United States, they are interfering publicly with U.S. elections," Guo told the Washington Free Beacon.

According to Guo, who has known current Chinese President Xi Jinping for more than 10 years, the anti-Trump influence operation is being directed by Xi and Wang through the Communist Party of China (CCP) National Security Commission, a high-level body created in 2013 that since then has tightened control over all other security organs.

"For the 2020 U.S. presidential election, the security committee has given very clear instructions that it is not permissible for Trump to win the 2020 election," Guo said speaking through an interpreter.

By deploying its intelligence and influence resources in the United States, the CCP is working to exploit the harsh political divisions between Democrats and Republicans in seeking to unseat the Trump administration.

"President Trump has already caused a lot of damage to the CCP, so they have declared he will not be allowed to have another four years in power," the dissident said.

I also think that had they not done it – as good as we’ve done, we’ve set a record, as you will tell, as you will say, in the stock market. We have the all-time high in the history of the stock market. I think I would have been 10,000 points higher and I think we would have been in the fours with GDP.

President Obama had zero interest rates; we have normalized interest rates. With zero interest rates, anything happens. And yet we still blew his economy away.

Switzerland helps Japan investigate Ghosn cases

Swiss prosecutors said Monday they have been assisting Japanese investigations into former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn, who has been indicted over financial misconduct and breach of trust.

Tokyo prosecutors requested Swiss assistance in investigations on Jan. 14, and the request was forwarded to the Canton of Zurich's prosecutors on March 8 following a summary probe, a spokesperson of the Swiss Federal Department of Justice and Police told Kyodo News.

While Zurich prosecutors did not give details of the ongoing investigation, they are believed to be checking bank accounts associated with Ghosn as Tokyo prosecutors are apparently following the flow of money disbursed by Nissan and Renault SA in Europe and the Middle East.

Many European and American financial institutions are based in Zurich, which is known for hosting many private banks and investment banks for the wealthy class.

French media have reported Ghosn was making preparations since around last year to move his tax domicile to Switzerland, which offers preferential tax treatment to the rich.

The former boss of the major Japanese automaker has been accused of underreporting his remuneration and redirecting company funds, allegations he categorically denies.

Since his arrest last November, investigations into Ghosn have spilled over to other countries.

Earlier this month, French authorities searched the head office of Renault in connection with a probe into Ghosn's lavish 2016 wedding party at the Palace of Versailles. The once-feted auto tycoon also served as Renault chairman.

Ghosn has been free on bail since April and is now awaiting trial in Japan.

What would you do when somebody destroys your home, steal your land, murders your children, and kicks you out of your country as a refugee?

The Ideological founder of Socialist Zionism; Nahman Syrkin proposed in his 1898 pamphlet entitled “The Jewish Question and the Socialist Jewish State”: “the liberation of Palestine from Turkish rule by inciting nationalist to repel against the empire and then subsequently evacuate Palestinian Arabs. Palestine, in which the Jews constitute today 10% of the population, must be evacuated for the Jews.”

In his book “The Voice of Jerusalem” in 1920 Israel Zangwill advocated an “Arab exodus” from Palestine to other Arab countries mainly Iraq. Haim Weizmann, though, presented the British government in 1930 an official, albeit secret, proposal to transfer Palestinians to Transjordan instead.

In a letter to an American colleague, Jabotinsky wrote in 1939 “There is no choice, the Arabs must make room for the Jews in Eretz Israel. If it was possible to transfer the Baltic people, it is also possible to move the Palestinian Arabs.” Jabotinsky was also cited by Ya’acov Shavit in his book “Zionism and the Arab Question” as saying: “We Jews, thank God, have nothing to do with the East … the Islamic soul must be broomed out of Eretz Yisrael.”

Dr. Selig Eugen Saskin; the director of the Land Settlement Department of the Jewish National Fund, stated in his memorandum to the 20th Zionist Congress in August 1937 that “Jewish state is unthinkable without compulsory transfer of the Arabs to the Arab states.”

Those two aforementioned actors are very controversial nowadays after many Americans have become aware of “Israel’s” crimes against the Palestinians and Saudi Arabia’s vicious conduct in the War on Yemen, and Bolton’s unwavering support for both of them has contributed to his unpopularity and the theory that he might be their joint “agent of influence”.

US Congress Approves Bipartisan Budget Act, Relegating More For Defense Than Everything Else Combined

On July 25th, the US House of Representatives passed the “Bipartisan Budget Act.”

The act is a sort of agreement between US President Donald Trump and congressional leaders, and it suspends debt limit for 2 years, while lifting the spending caps by $320 billion.

65 Republicans, about one-third of the House Republican conference, voted in favor of the measure.

“Our fundamental principle is to make sure we have fiscal house in order. We understand we live in a House that has to find compromise,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said. “This is not the bill that we would write. We are not in the majority.”

The US national debt now totals more than $22.5 trillion.

“We are closing in on $23 trillion in debt, and the latest bipartisan budget ‘deal’ would continue to push us further down the dangerous and unsustainable path we’re on,” Rep. Jeff Duncan, noted in a statement after the vote. “We can’t keep making excuses while we pass this debt on to our children, recklessly throwing fiscal sanity out the window in the process.”

Democrats had enough votes, 219, to pass the bill on their own.

“By passing the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019, we have ended the threat of harsh austerity cuts and set the stage for strategic investments in our nation’s future,” Rep. John Yarmuth, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, wrote in a statement. “Once approved by the Senate and signed into law by the President, this truly bipartisan legislation will provide much-needed certainty for our communities and our economy.”

Notably, the budget approved $1.48 trillion in military spending for 2020 and 2021.

“At $738 billion for Fiscal Year 2020 and $740 billion for Fiscal Year 2021,” wrote William Hartung, director of the Arms and Security Project at the Center for International Policy , “the agreement sets the table for two of the highest budgets for the Pentagon and related work on nuclear warheads at the Department of Energy since World War II.”

“The proposed figures are higher than spending at the height of the Vietnam and Korean Wars, and substantially more than the high point of the Reagan buildup of the 1980s,” Hartung added. “And the Fiscal Year 2020 and Fiscal Year 2021 numbers are only slightly less than spending in 2010, when the United States had 180,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, roughly nine times the number currently deployed.”

A few things are clear after Robert Mueller’s testimony last week. One is that the former special counsel is an out-of-touch figurehead who doesn’t even seem to have read his own report. No one asked the secretary of state to back up his fantastic assertion, which overlooks the obvious fact that Al Qaeda and ISIS are both Sunni extremist organizations that despise Shi’ite Iran as much as they despise the United States, if not more. In June 2017, for instance, the Islamic State launched a devastating attack in Tehran that killed 17 civilians and wounded 43. In September 2018, it attacked a military parade in the southwestern Iranian town of Ahvaz, killing 25. Three months later, suicide car bombers belonging to Ansar al-Furqan, a militant Sunni group linked to Al Qaeda, killed two policemen and wounded 48 in the southeastern town of Chabahar.

Why would Iran finance terror when it’s the victim? It doesn’t make sense. But, then, reality, as Karl Rove once put it, is something that empires feel free to make up to suit their own purposes.

Mueller’s assertion last Wednesday that Russia is interfering in U.S. elections similarly exists in an evidence-free terrain. “It wasn’t a single attempt,” he declared in reference to misleading Facebook ads placed by a St. Petersburg, Russia, troll farm known as the Internet Research Agency. “They’re doing it as we sit here, and they expect to do it during the next campaign.”

The New York Times and Jeff Bezos’s Washington Post agreed with Mueller and issued howls of concurring outrage. But how did Mueller know that Russia was hacking away “as we sit here”? What evidence does he have that they will do it in 2020? The answer is zero. To paraphrase “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” the attitude seems to be: “Proof? We ain’t got no proof. We don’t need no proof. I don’t have to show you any stinking proof.”

US Stealing Syrian Oil. Controls About 30% of Syrian Territory

Imperial adventurism is grand theft on a global scale — seizing, controlling, and looting the resources of targeted nations, along with exploiting their people.

Operating from illegally constructed military bases in northern and southern parts of Syria, platforms for war and training of jihadists, the US controls about 30% of Syrian territory, including where most of the country’s oil reserves are located.

Pre-war, Syria was a small producer, the only Eastern Mediterranean country with significant/yet small reserves, estimated at about 2.5 billion barrels earlier by the Oil and Gas Journal, along with around 5.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

Looted Syrian oil by US-supported ISIS was earlier transported cross-border to Turkey for refining and sales.

President Erdogan, his family and cronies reportedly profited from the grand theft/smuggling operation.

Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov earlier said

“Turkey is the main destination for the oil stolen from its legitimate owners, which are Syria and Iraq,” adding:

“Turkey resells this oil. The appalling part about it is that the country’s top political leadership is involved in the illegal business — President Erdogan and his family.”

Like the US, NATO, Israel, the Saudis, and their Middle East partners, Turkey supports regional jihadists these countries pretend to oppose.

Antonov earlier explained that

Erdogan and other “Turkish elites conspir(e) to steal oil from their neighbors in industrial quantities along ‘rolling pipelines’ made up of thousands of tanker trucks.”

“We are certain that Turkey is the destination for stolen (Syrian and Iraqi) oil, and (have) irrefutable facts to prove it.”

The illicit trade was worth hundreds of millions of dollars on the black market. Turkey may still be involved as the destination for US-stolen Syrian oil.

On Monday, Russian General Staff/Main Operational Directorate commander General Sergey Rudskoy accused US and allied forces of “highjack(ing)” Syrian oil from ISIS, profiting from its sales — perhaps shipping it cross-border to Turkey and/or elsewhere, the Trump regime running a black market operation with looted Syrian oil, adding:

US-supported ISIS and other jihadists were also trained to destroy Syrian (and perhaps Iraqi) oil and gas infrastructure, along with continuing attacks on government forces and civilians, using heavy and other weapons supplied by Western and regional countries, including Israel, Turkey, the Saudis and UAE.

Rudskoy added that the Trump regime is arming Arab and Kurdish fighters, working with them as well in the illicit trafficking of stolen Syrian oil.

US trained and armed jihadists are also being used against Russia’s Khmeimim airbase in Syria’s Latakia province, attacking it with Western-supplied drones and rocket launchers.

They’re deployed by US transport planes and helicopters to continue endless war in Syria. Thousands are being trained at the Pentagon’s Al-Tanf base in southern Syria near the Iraqi and Jordanian borders.

The US came to Syria, Iraq, elsewhere in the region, North Africa, Central Asia, and other parts of the world to stay — part of its imperial aim for global conquest and control, endless wars its favored strategy.

Residents of Al-Rez village targeted earlier today by the Trump’s coalition who were not killed were left in a state of shock and panic due to the massive explosions around them, another goal of such coalitions.

The purpose of setting up coalitions of willing outside the United Nations and against international law is to make more profits for the military-industrial complex that has a large influence on the US foreign policy, and to set the stage for new contracts for rebuilding at the same time they enjoy killing the people of other nations for Satanic rituals.

Residents who resisted were beaten by the soldiers, kicked down flights of stairs and even shot at close range with rubber bullets. The soldiers were recorded laughing and celebrating as they did their dirty work. Occupants who did not resist and who held their hands up in surrender were also not spared the rod, as were also foreign observers who were present to add their voices to those who were protesting the outrage. The injuries sustained by some of the victims have been photographed and are available online.

Twelve Palestinians and four British observers were injured badly enough to be hospitalized. The British reported that they were “stamped on, dragged by the hair, strangled with a scarf and pepper sprayed by Israeli border police.” One who was hospitalized described how Israeli soldiers dragged him by his feet, lifting him up, and kicking him in the stomach, while one soldier stamped on his head four times “at full force” before standing on his head and pulling his hair. Another suffered a fractured rib after “[the policeman] then stamped on my throat and others started punching my torso. It was a sadistic display of violence…”

Yet another foreign observer was dragged out of the house, “…her hands were crushed so badly that she suffered a fractured knuckle on her left hand, and her right hand suffered severe tissue damage ‘which will be permanently misshapen unless she gets cosmetic surgery.’”

Edmond Sichrovsky, an Austrian activist of Jewish origin, who was in one of the houses, described how Israeli forces broke the door down, first dragging out the Palestinians, “knocking the grandfather to the floor in front of his crying and screaming grandchildren.” Cell phones were forcibly removed to eliminate any picture taking or filming before soldiers began attacking him and four other activists. “I was repeatedly kicked and kneed, which left a bloody nose and multiple cuts, as well breaking my glasses from a knee in the face. On Tuesday, Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill requiring President Trump to either release his tax returns or he won't appear on the ballot in the state.

Under SB 27, called the "Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act," any candidate running for president or governor in California must file copies of their tax returns from the previous five years to the California secretary of State, or their names will be stricken from the ballot, the Hill reports.

Newsom argued that, as the largest economic engine within the US, California has a "responsibility" to demand this additional information (for the record: the Constitution doesn't say anything about candidates releasing tax returns - though the federal income tax didn't exist back on).

"As one of the largest economies in the world and home to one in nine Americans eligible to vote, California has a special responsibility to require this information of presidential and gubernatorial candidates," Newsom said.

"These are extraordinary times and states have a legal and moral duty to do everything in their power to ensure leaders seeking the highest offices meet minimal standards, and to restore public confidence. The disclosure required by this bill will shed light on conflicts of interest, self-dealing, or influence from domestic and foreign business interest."

A Trump campaign spokesman called the new law "unconstitutional," and insisted that there was a good reason why California's last governor, Jerry Brown, refused to sign the legislation.

In a statement, Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh called the move "unconstitutional."

"There are very good reasons why the very liberal Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed this bill two years ago - it's unconstitutional and it opens up the possibility for states to load up more requirements on candidates in future elections. What's next, five years of health records?" he said.

Murtaugh said states cannot add requirements to presidential candidates' qualifications for running.

"The Constitution is clear on the qualifications for someone to serve as president and states cannot add additional requirements on their own," he said. "The bill also violates the 1st Amendment right of association since California can't tell political parties which candidates their members can or cannot vote for in a primary election."

Unsurprisingly, the bill was overwhelmingly passed by California's assembly and the state senate earlier this month. Among its more appalling provisions, the bill includes an "urgency clause", which would allow it to take effect before the 2020 vote, meaning any Californians who want to vote for President Trump might need to write his name in.

Though it has faded from the headlines somewhat, the battle over Trump's tax returns continues to rage. The administration is already suing New York State, which recently passed a law allowing the state to request Trump's tax returns, while in Congress, the Ways and Means Committee has filed a lawsuit over the administration’s refusal to release Trump's returns, which is likely the beginning of a lengthy legal battle.

Lawrence Jones investigates what's really happening on the streets of Baltimore

Fox News contributor and Fox Nation host Lawrence Jones said Tuesday that Baltimore’s liberal policies have negatively affected the city, speaking to some of the residents there about the conditions.

“They have made it very clear, they don’t care about the politics of things. But it’s very clear that liberal policies have definitely affected Baltimore. The question is, what would be the response. We’ve seen the failure of all these cities, including Baltimore where there is corruption,” Jones told "Fox & Friends."

Trump started a feud with House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings, calling the congressman’s district “a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess.”

During Jones' "Man on the Street" interviews with residents, their responses were negative. Jones interviewed a resident who said, “The crisis is not just the crime. But the crisis starts downtown with the government.”

“I personally don’t even want to live in Baltimore anymore and I’m afraid to actually raise a family here and this is my home,” another resident told Jones.

“When you talk about the forgotten men and women, Baltimore is included and these people feel like no one cared about them,” said Jones about his time in the city, explaining what he observed walking around different neighborhoods, including gang activity in a park.

"There were no kids playing in the park, because the gang had taken over the park. You saw them selling drugs, right there. Nobody came to break it up. This is an American city. And if we say that we care about people and we want to evoke change, then we got to do something about it."

Cuomo signs law allowing candidates, officials to use campaign funds for child care

New York politicians will now be able to use campaign funds for child care costs incurred during campaigns, while in office or while holding a party position.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who signed the bill Tuesday, said the change in election law aims to help more women run for office on the state and local level.

"Women face too many barriers when it comes to running for office and frankly child care expenses shouldn't be one of them," Cuomo said in a statement. "By signing this measure into law, we will build on the historic progress we've made toward gender equality and empower more parents — and mothers in particular — to seek public office to ensure the decision makers in Albany reflect the people they are elected to represent.”

The bill goes into effect in 60 days.

The state law follows the Federal Election Commission (FEC) ruling last year allowing candidates to use funds to cover child care cost. New York Democrat Liuba Grechen Shirley, who was unsuccessful in her bid to oust Republican incumbent Rep. Pete King, had reached out to the FEC, prompting the change.

Shirley tweeted Tuesday thanking Cuomo and state Sen. Shelley Mayer (D) and Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D), backers of the bill, on the new legislation.

“Last year when I put in the request to use campaign funds for childcare, I was worried the FEC would deny my request & I didn’t know how I could continue my campaign. Now, campaign funds for childcare is becoming the norm,” she tweeted.
