Add to this the fact that the radar return data shows a vertical descent rate of about -4000 FPM, and one has to wonder what happened. The bikers did say they said it sounded unusual for a chopper. The question is was that a mechanical failure or a spatial disorentiation getting the helicopter out of control? The pilot being IFR rated and many hours in the S76 seems the latter the less likely. But only the NTSB will tell us for reasonable certainty in their conclusion report a year or more from now. I will say this accident investigation will be bumped up in priority to find a cause not because of the celeb factor, but because of the S76 factor and it being popular with corporate and offshore oil drilling companies. A lot of VIPs fly in them and if there is an unknown mechanical threat like from a maintenance repair, the FAA needs to know about it immediately.

'Flash Crash' Scapegoat Nat Sarao Sentenced To 1 Year House Arrest

 

Last week, we reported that US prosecutors had recommended to a judge presiding over the sentencing of 2010 'flash crash' scapegoat Nat Sarao that the former day trader be sentenced to time served.

 

Though that's not exactly how things went during his Tuesday sentencing, at least Sarao - nicknamed the 'Hound of Hounslow, the London neighborhood where his parents own a home - won't see the inside of another jail cell. According to the Guardian, "the story of the British day trader charged with triggering a trillion-dollar "flash crash" that caused havoc on Wall Street in 2010 ended where it began on Tuesday with a judge sentencing him to one year of home incarceration at his parent’s house."

 

Sarao's parents leave in West London, and after five years of legal struggles that included being extradited from the UK to the US, the former day trader, who has been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, and who was reportedly scammed out of nearly all of the $35 million-plus he earned trading. Sarao used a custom-designed algorithm that cancelled his orders before execution to manipulate markets, prosecutors said.

 

Spoofing, or placing orders and then cancelling them before execution to create the appearance of more - or less - demand, is illegal in the US. However, there's one important caveat: Prosecutors, who had asked the judge to deliver a sentence of time served, pointed out that a sentence of home confinement in the UK would be impossible to enforce. Though the judge and Sarao's lawyers reportedly came to an agreement that would only allow him to leave the house under special circumstances.

 

The sentence means Sarao, who earned roughly $1 million on the day of the flash crash, will have only spent four months in a UK prison. Prosecutors praised Sarao for his cooperation in other cases, and for expanding prosecutors' understanding of how criminal traders game the system. Initially, Sarao was charged with 22 counts of fraud related to his 'spoofing' trades over five years. During the May 6 2010 flash crash, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 600 points in five minutes, then regained most of that amount over the following 20 minutes.

 

The sentence marks the end of a nearly five year ordeal: Sarao was arrested by British authorities in 2015 and spent four months in Wandsworth prison before being extradited to the US.

A detail generally overlooked in all we’ve been reading about the misfired Iranian missile that brought down the Ukraine airliner with 176 people aboard: It was most likely made in North Korea and sold to Iran or made in Iran from a North Korean design and technology.

 

The relationship between North Korea and Iran revolves around the export to Iran of thousands of short- to mid-range missiles over the past 20 to 30 years. They’re the type that Iran also ships to Syria and the anti-Israel groups Hezbollah and Hamas. The missiles Iran fired at U.S. bases in Iraq in a show of vengeance for the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani would also have been North Korean.

 

The relationship goes deep into the history of the region. President George W. Bush, in the first State of the Union address of his presidency in January 2002, four months after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon, described an “axis of evil” binding North Korea, Iran and Iraq, then ruled by Saddam Hussein. Iraq’s membership in that infamous grouping may have ended when Bush ordered U.S. troops into Iraq the next year on the basis of phony reports about a weapons of mass destruction program, but Iran and North Korea have long been in cahoots on nukes and missiles.

 

North Korea has hundreds of advisers on the ground now in Iran providing “technical support and training on a variety of systems and capabilities,” says Bruce Bechtol, who’s been watching North Korea ever since serving as a Marine in South Korea, then an intelligence analyst in the Pentagon and a faculty member at Marine Corps University in Quantico, Va. Bechtol, the author of numerous books and articles on North Korea’s leadership and military structure, says the North has shipped Scud, Rodong and Musudan missiles to Iran and the technology for the intercontinental Taepodong.

 

“North Korea is the seller and Iran is the buyer,” says Bechtol, but that’s not all. The two also collaborate on nuclear technology originally acquired from Abdul Qadeer Khan, the Pakistani nuclear physicist known as the “father of the Pakistan atomic bomb.”

 

A national hero for his role in arming Pakistan against its historic foe, India, already a nuclear power, A.Q. Khan made a fortune selling nuclear secrets to Iran and North Korea before he was finally arrested and confined to his estate in the Pakistan capital of Islamabad. Iran has yet to fabricate a nuclear warhead but has had teams of scientists, engineers and technicians on hand in North Korea witnessing all six of the North’s underground nuclear tests, last staged in September 2017, as well as numerous missile tests.

 

The bond between Iran and North Korea confronts the United States with a serious question that has yet to come up amid all the speculation about U.S. policy toward both countries. Much as President Donald Trump would like to calm fears of an impending war with Iran and come to terms with North Korea on its nukes, he does not appear to be aware of the de facto alliance between the two. Everywhere Iran supports militias and front groups around the Middle East, North Korean advisers are there too telling them how to fire those missiles.

 

But how do these missiles get to Iran? A few may go by boat, eluding capture by the U.S. Navy and others committed to stopping the traffic, but the easiest, safest, swiftest route is by air. The planes have to go through Chinese air space, possibly stopping in China, and also may be landing in Pakistan. China has long been providing military aid to Pakistan, through which it’s building a road across the Himalayas all the way to the Arabian Sea. Both Pakistan and China count on Iran as a major source of oil. China in turn provides North Korea with virtually all its oil. As Muslim countries, Pakistan and Iran have been on good terms for years.

 

The enduring nature of the Tehran-Pyongyang axis, however, does not mean that a wider war is inevitable in either the Middle East or northeast Asia. Protests in Tehran may force the government to pull back, to avoid conflict, while Kim Jong Un focuses on economic issues. If Kim does have a “strategic new weapon,” however, it’s certain that Iranian and North Korean scientists and engineers are working on it and both sides will have it. That’s assuming such a fearsome weapon really exists.

Berkshire will also refinance Lee’s existing debt, providing $576 million in long-term financing at a 9% interest rate, and become the company’s sole lender. While newspapers represented only a small part of Berkshire, which bought most of its holdings in the last decade, it is very unusual for Buffett to sell an entire business.

Republicans had hoped to wrap up the trial with an acquittal of the president by this week, but Democrats have said Mr. Bolton should appear under oath to offer a firsthand account of the president’s motivations for freezing aid to Ukraine—a matter at the heart of the impeachment case.

 

At a meeting of all Republican senators late Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) said the vote total wasn’t where it needed to be on blocking witnesses or documents, the people familiar with the matter said. He had a card with “yes,” “no,” and “maybes” marked on it, apparently a whip count, but he didn’t show it to senators.

 

Sens. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Martha McSally of Arizona and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who face competitive races in the fall, addressed their colleagues in the meeting, people familiar with the matter said. Can’t Make This Up… New York State Is Now Mandating “Stargazing Permits” For Looking At The Sky

 

Imagine this: You’re out with your family in one of the parks in New York state where you can actually see the stars when it gets dark. You look up in the sky, see a constellation, and you point upwards to show your kids. Along comes a park ranger demanding to see your Stargazing Permit, and issues you a citation because you didn’t know you needed such a permit.

 

That’s right, the state of New York is now demanding us peasants give them money so we can look up at the sky.

 

This is totally a real thing, as it shows up on the state’s permitting for “Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation” schedule:

 

STARGAZING PERMIT

 

Requirements:

 

Fee of $35.00, $60-Out of State –Vehicle Registration and Driver’s License Required

 

Permit allows after sunset parking for stargazing only,valid January 1 -December 31at:

Hither Hills -Except July & August

Jones Beach -West End 2 and Field 6

Montauk Point –Upper Parking Lot

Robert Moses -Field 2

Gov. Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow -Field1 & Field 3

Wildwood –Main Parking Lot

They also make you buy a permit if you want to dive into the water. It’s the “regional diving permit” and it costs $80 for in-state residents and $125 for out-of-state. Want to run your metal detector over the dirt? Fork over $40, you peon, or end up in jail!

Others are defending the permit in the thread, claiming that it allows people to enter the “closed parks” after hours. But they are clearly missing the point. If you can enter the park with a permit, then it’s not “closed” at all. It’s opened to anyone willing to be extorted or who can afford it. Those who are unable to pay the government or choose not to do so for the exact same activity will be arrested and or further extorted.

 

Now for the irony and blatant statist hypocrisy. If you want to go after dark to look at stars on state land that you paid for through your tax dollars, you have to pay the government more money for a permit. However, if the government wants to take the most sacred land in the state and put a telescope on it to look at the stars, this is fine and dandy. If you try to protest the government’s construction of star gazing equipment on your sacred land, you can and will be kidnapped and caged.

 

Case in point: Mauna Kea’s summit is the most sacred of all the mountains in Hawaii to many of the indigenous people. In July, when those people showed up to protest the desecration of their land with the Thirty-Meter Telescope, dozens were arrested.

I did some digging yesterday on viruses in general with a focus on new viruses in populations with no immunity. It's not going to be as bad in the Western nations as it is in China due to less population density and better public health practices, but here are a few thoughts and nuggets.

 

1) The predictions on the spread of this virus have been pretty darn close. This is due to China being a homogenous population with no immunity. Easily predictable. Places with diverse populations like the USA are harder to predict. China's numbers will continue to go up until ~Feb. 6, which is 2 weeks after lockdown. Current graphic included, and Feb. 6 numbers will likely be close. After Feb. 6 we will see how effective lockdown and face masks are.

 

2) Everyone is right about this being worse than SARS or MERS with respect to it's transmissibility. It is much more so than either of the 2, almost on par with the low estimates of smallpox. MERS was no joke if you caught it with 40% mortality rate…but it was relatively hard to contract and came from camels before human to human occurred…seriously. Make of that what you will. SARS escaped from labs several times and was about 10% mortality. This one is harder to predict. If you go by the recovered vs. dead, the mortality is greater than 50%. The problem with that is commie numbers are unreliable. The CDC's guess is about 4% mortality. Canada puts it at 10%. So that is a wildcard right now. Most of the infected in Western nations are doing well, with the exception of a critical patient in France. We'll have to wait on that one.

 

3) For those of you thinking this is just like the flu or something…WRONG. Firstly, the flu mainly kills the very old or the very young. The median age of Corona deaths currently is 49 yo. And the most important thing is that this is a NEW virus. There is no immunity to this whatsoever worldwide and no vaccine…and it is airborne. Yes, it will spread quickly, likely world wide and more quickly than the flu once it gets to your neck of the woods. The thing is, most flu strains are catalogued and have been seen before. Meaning that the herd immunity is at least somewhat in effect. Again, this is brand new..think Indians (casino) and smallpox. What will the mortality rate be once it hits Western nations? Who knows…it won't be as bad as China…but still something to be alert for. Point being, it's here. And if history holds true, it will spread quickly. The wild cards are mortality rate and how the virus affects people of non-Asian origin.

 

4) I have already mentioned the points in our favor. So the likely most affected in the USA will be healthcare workers and anyone who is in contact with a lot of people in their daily life….so us incels should be OK.
