Facebook is helping set up a new political advocacy group in D.C., called “American Edge,” hoping to dissuade lawmakers against regulating big tech companies, according to a report in the Washington Post.

According to the report, the Facebook-backed lobbying group will attempt to convince federal lawmakers that big tech companies are “essential to the U.S. economy and the future of free speech.”

The organization is called American Edge, and it aims through a barrage of advertising and other political spending to convince policymakers that Silicon Valley is essential to the U.S. economy and the future of free speech, according to three people familiar with the matter as well as documents reviewed by The Washington Post. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the group because it hasn’t officially been announced.

In December, American Edge formed as a nonprofit organization, and last month, it registered an accompanying foundation, according to incorporation documents filed in Virginia. The setup essentially allows it to navigate a thicket of tax laws in such a way that it can raise money, and blitz the airwaves with ads, without the obligation of disclosing all of its donors. Many powerful political actors — including the National Rifle Association — similarly operate with the aid of “social welfare” groups.

Facebook is viewed as a critical, primary driver in helping to launch American Edge, the sources said, though some cautioned it is not the only one. On the group’s board are a former Republican governor, federal regulator and Democratic congressman, according to people familiar with the effort, and it’s being advised by a stable of veteran Democratic and Republican consultants.

Facebook confirmed its participation in a comment to the Post, saying the aim of the new organization is to “help build support for our industry.”

The creation of the advocacy group comes at a time when big tech faces unprecedented scrutiny over political censorship, election interference, and competition. Facebook alone is currently subject to an antitrust probe as well as lawsuits from the targets of its political censorship.

Attorney General Bill Barr's Justice Department announced last week that it's dropping the charges, concluding that it cannot prove Flynn is guilty of the crimes to which he's already pleaded guilty.

But that doesn't necessarily mean the case is over and the defendant is in the clear.

On Monday, the Washington Post published an op-ed from three former federal prosecutors - John Gleeson, David O'Neil, and Marshall Miller - who argued that the federal judge overseeing the case, Emmet G. Sullivan, has "the authority, the tools and the obligation to assess the credibility of the department's stated reasons for abruptly reversing course."

The piece added that the Justice Department's motion to dismiss the Flynn case is "actually just a request" that a court needs to approve.

One day after the op-ed was published, NBC News reported that the judge in the Flynn case took "the unusual step" yesterday of "inviting briefs from third parties.""

If the tests succeed, the vaccine candidate could seek Health Canada’s approval for emergency use as early as this fall, Mr. Szumski said. It is already undergoing concurrent first- and second-phase human trials in China.

Ad5-nCoV is backed by Tianjin-based CanSino Biologics Inc. and the Institute of Biotechnology of the Academy of Military Medical Sciences. It is a recombinant vaccine, which uses a different type of virus – in this case an adenovirus – genetically modified to include a spike protein that is a signature of the deadly coronavirus. The adenovirus is itself modified to prevent it from replicating. CanSino and the NRC have a relationship that dates to the Chinese company’s development of an Ebola vaccine, which was approved for use by Beijing in 2017. All of these companies were imagined up, created, and listed by American investment bankers.” The creation of the new SOEs out of the dross of the old SOEs is the work of Wall Street bankers who provided the “lipstick, the mascara, the pedicure, the hair weave” so that they closely resemble Western corporations and can be sold at high prices, handsomely profiting the party and its friends and, of course, Wall Street banks. As the Indian stockbroker Shankar Sharma has noted, in just one Chinese bank IPO, the government paid Wall Street $200 million. “Research reports by Wall Street banks have always been up for sale to the highest bidder, and nobody knows this better than the Chinese.” There has to be someone on the buy side to pay for all this Wall Street-minted SOE paper. On May 4, SEC Chairman Jay Clayton warned about the consequences of the inability of U.S. regulators to inspect for compliance and enforce U.S. securities rules and regulations. Such investing entails “significant disclosure, financial reporting and other risks,” Clayton said — risks that Main Street investors should better understand.

When the lipstick comes off the pig, it’s not a pretty sight. That happened to two companies in BlackRock’s emerging markets ETF only last month. The SEC has announced that it is launching a probe into the apparent fraud. Five days later, Tal Education Group, a K-12 tutoring provider, announced that it had uncovered that one of its employees had inflated sales by forging contracts. Reports suggest that the fraud could have been taking place as far back as 2016. “You need a trusted partner who is not only an expert on China but can apply their knowledge, expertise and judgement in creating portfolios that can deliver the best of Chinese markets to you,” America’s largest asset manager says on the “Why BlackRock for China” page of its website. As reported by the Globe & Mail, CanSino – a company linked to China’s Academy of Military medical Sciences – will be brought to Canadian soil to test out China’s Ad5-nCoV, the Chinese vaccine candidate.

Making the deal even more absurd, Canadian technology will be used on the vaccine, but even if it works, Canada won’t get any ‘revenue’, with all of it going to China.

Fox News’ Ed Henry reported Tuesday evening that Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell has declassified information calling into question the conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to help Donald Trump.

Henry told Tucker Carlson on Tucker Carlson Tonight that the new information would suggest that John Brennan, who headed the Central Intelligence Agency under President Barack Obama, “also had intel saying, actually, Russia wanted Hillary Clinton to win because she was a known quantity, she had been secretary of state, and Vladimir Putin’s team thought she was more malleable, while candidate Donald Trump was unpredictable.”

Former National Security Council chief of staff Fred Fleitz made a similar claim in an article on FoxNews.com April 22:

House Intelligence Committee staff told me that after an exhaustive investigation reviewing intelligence and interviewing intelligence officers, they found that Brennan suppressed high-quality intelligence suggesting that Putin actually wanted the more predictable and malleable Clinton to win the 2016 election.

Instead, the Brennan team included low-quality intelligence that failed to meet intelligence community standards to support the political claim that Russian officials wanted Trump to win, House Intelligence Committee staff revealed. They said that CIA analysts also objected to including that flawed, substandard information in the assessment.

On Tuesday, Henry said that he had obtained independent confirmation of the claims made by Fleitz in that report.

For three years, the received wisdom in Washington has been that 17 intelligence agencies concluded that Russia had interfered in the election to help Trump win. It then transpired that only four agencies had actually been involved.

The Senate Intelligence Committee, chaired by embattled Republican Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), issued a report last month that appeared to confirm the work of the intelligence agencies.

However, that conclusion may soon be contradicted.

President Trump has accepted the claim that Russia interfered in the election — though he does not believe Russia actually helped him win, and he has publicly cast doubt on the idea that Russia preferred him over Clinton, his Democratic rival.

Breitbart News noted in 2017: “[T]he Russians may just as well have preferred Hillary Clinton, who had given Russia everything it wanted while serving as President Barack Obama’s Secretary of State — from the ill-fated “reset,” to a surrender of U.S. missile defenses in Eastern Europe, to the sale of 20% of America’s uranium reserves to a Russian company closely tied to the Russian state.”

“This could be a bombshell,” Henry told Carlson on Tuesday.

Investment bankers in advisory roles could receive 20%-25% cuts to incentive pay, while their investment bank colleagues who work in underwriting would see smaller declines of 10%-15%. Johnson writes that this is because investment banking advisory revenues were down in the first quarter of the year, with most deals stalled, while debt underwriting flourished as corporations sought to build up their cash.

The report also finds that asset managers could receive 20%-25% reductions in bonuses, while hedge fund workers could see 15%-20% declines.

Jihadis, primarily Afghan Taliban terrorists, have carried out nearly 100 attacks in 16 countries since the beginning of Ramadan at the end of last month. In the process they have killed at least 290 people while injuring 280 others in the first two weeks of the holiest month for Muslims, a Breitbart News count shows.

That means, on average, Islamic terrorists have executed about 21 people and maimed an estimated 20 others since Ramadan began at sunset on April 23. This year, Muslims expect the holy month to last through sundown on May 23.

The alarming figures were published in a poll conducted by Euromedia Research this week, and claimed that 65 per cent of Italians feared that the country, especially in the north which has been the hardest hit region by the Chinese virus, could see social tensions and rioting in the country’s industrial heartlands.

Alessandra Ghisleri, director of Euromedia Research, commented on the results saying, “After a hundred days of lockdown, Italians are beginning to be afraid: seven out of ten fear that the economic crisis will detonate social uprisings, especially in the North. Only five out of a hundred say they still have faith in politicians,” Il Giornale reports.

“The real issue is that confidence in Italian politicians today is at 4.6 per cent,” Ghisleri said and referenced the “Vaffanculo-Days” (“Fuck-off Days”) that were organised by Five Star Movement founder Beppe Grillo in 2007 the last time Italian confidence in politicians was recorded as so low."

Federal judge opens the door to Clinton deposition in email case

A federal judge on Wednesday opened the door to interviewing Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton as part of a review into her use of a private email server while secretary of State.

Judge Emmet Sullivan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia laid out the ground rules for interviewing multiple State Department officials about the emails, with an eye toward finishing the depositions in the weeks before the party nominating conventions.

Clinton herself may be forced to answer questions under oath, Sullivan said, though she is not yet being forced to take that step.

“Based on information learned during discovery, the deposition of Mrs. Clinton may be necessary,” Sullivan said in an order on Wednesday. [READ THE ORDER BELOW] Discovery is the formal name for the evidence-gathering process, which includes depositions.

“If plaintiff believes Mrs. Clinton’s testimony is required, it will request permission from the Court at the appropriate time.”

The order, which came in the course of a lawsuit from conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, leaves open the possibility that Clinton will be forced to answer detailed questions on the eve of her formal selection as the Democratic presidential nominee about her creation of the server.

Any deposition would surely roil the presidential race and force her campaign to confront the issue, which has dogged her for a year.

“Her legal team is really going to fight that really hard,” predicted Matthew Whitaker, a former U.S. attorney who has raised questions about Clinton’s email setup.

“You have to take her deposition in this case to fully understand how it was designed and the whys and the what-fors.”

While leaving the door open to Clinton’s eventual deposition, Sullivan on Wednesday ordered at least six current and former State Department employees to answer questions from Judicial Watch, which has filed multiple lawsuits over the Clinton email case.

That list includes longtime Clinton aide Huma Abedin, former chief of staff Cheryl Mills, under secretary for management Patrick Kennedy, former executive secretary Stephen Mull and Bryan Pagliano, the IT official believed to be responsible for setting up and maintaining the server.

The judge also ordered the State Department to prepare a formal answer about Clinton’s emails. Donald Reid, a senior security official, may also be asked to answer questions, if Judicial Watch so decides.

That process is scheduled to be wrapped up within eight weeks, putting the deadline in the final week of June.

Judicial Watch brought suit against the State Department under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in an effort to bring Abedin’s emails to light. The lawsuit has since evolved into a battleground over Clinton’s use of the private server.
