Subjective Standards for Censorship 

"If the Online Safety Bill passes, the UK government will be able to directly silence user speech, and even imprison those who publish messages that it doesn’t like. The bill empowers the UK’s Office of Communications (OFCOM) to levy heavy fines or even block access to sites that offend people. We said last year that those powers raise serious concerns about freedom of expression. Since then, the bill has been amended, and it’s gotten worse. 

Section 10 of the revised bill even authorizes jail time—up to two years—for anyone whose social media message could cause “psychological harm amounting to at least serious distress.”  The message doesn’t even have to cause harm. If the authorities believe that the the offender intended to cause harm, and that there was a substantial risk of harm, that’s enough for a prosecution. There’s also a separate crime of transmitting “false communications,” punishable by fines or up to 51 weeks of imprisonment.  

The problem here should be obvious: these are utterly subjective criteria. People disagree all the time about what constitutes a false statement. Determining what statements have a “real and substantial risk” of causing psychological harm is the epitome of a subjective question, as is who might have a “reasonable excuse” for making such a statement. The apparent lack of legal certainty casts doubt on whether the UK's Online Safety Act meets international human rights standards.

The few exceptions in the section appear to be grants to large media concerns. For instance, recognized news publishers are exempt from the section on communications offenses. So is anyone “showing a film made for cinema to members of the public.” 

The exceptions are telling. The UK’s new proposed censors at OFCOM are making it clear they’ll never enforce against corporate media concerns; it’s only small media creators, activists, citizen journalists, and everyday users who will be subject to the extra scrutiny and accompanying punishments."

Besides the RINO's handpicked choice Taylor Robson, Lake had votes split away from her by 3 other candidates, one of whom - Salmon - had dropped out of the race months ago and yet by some arcane act of sorcery his name was still on the ballot and garnered 29,000 votes.

There were 417,000 Non-Kari Lake GOP votes. Fully grasp the miracle that was accomplished here by the red wave.

2) Mark Finchem

They ran 3 ringer vote-splitting candidates against Mark Finchem. 430,004 non-Finchem votes were cast in the AZ GOP primary race for Sec State.

3) Abe Hamadeh

Hamadeh faced the biggest # of ringer vote splitting candidates at 5. More than half a million votes were case against Hamadeh and for one of the other GOP candidates.

Note something else very unusual here.

Current GOP vote tallies for these races:

GOP Governor: 798,420

GOP Sec State: 744,595

GOP Atty Gen: 760,232

Are we to believe that there were 53,000 GOP voters who voted for 1 of the Governor candidates but skipped voting for Secretary of State?

"When Russia is running out of them for Ukraine, and they're going to Iran to go buy more, [that] should cause us all a bit of concern because you can see how valuable that they can be in the future fight," he said. 

U.S. and partner forces have largely focused on ways to defeat enemy drones after takeoff, but Clarke said there is also a need for interagency discussions on ways to disrupt supply chains to prevent them from taking off.  

But first, there must be a discussion on norms and authorities for their use, he said. With a "very low" cost of entry for some of the small unmanned systems, the general said some countries may want to use drones to move patients or supplies.  Medical transport vehicles are protected under the Geneva Conventions.

AFP reports flight-following websites and Twitter accounts that offer real-time views of air traffic are on the end of regular pushback ranging from complaints to gear seizures by those who would rather their movements are not in the public domain.

One U.S.-based group alone gets dozens of “requests” each year to stop posting aircraft flight movements, according to its organiser, Dan Streufert.

“We have not removed anything so far. This is all public information. And I don’t want to be the arbiter of who’s right and who’s wrong,” added Streufert, founder of flight tracking site ADS-B Exchange which can track any flight from a private individual to a politician, star, activist or member of Royalty.

The AFP report sets out limits do apply in some cases, but groups that piece together the flight paths note the core information source is legally available and open to anyone with the right gear to take it fully into the public domain.

Under U.S. rules, planes in designated areas are required to be equipped with ADS-B technology that broadcasts aircraft positions using signals that relatively simple equipment can pick up. It outlines what happens next:

A service like Sweden-based Flightradar24 has 34,000, mostly volunteer-operated receivers around the world to pick up the signals, a key source of information that’s routed back to a central network and combined with data on flight schedules and aircraft information.

Figuring out or confirming to whom a plane actually belongs can require some sleuthing, said jet tracker Jack Sweeney, who filed a public records request with the US government that yielded a form bearing the signature of a particular plane’s owner: Tesla boss Elon Musk.

Sweeney has drawn attention with his Twitter account that tracks the movements of the billionaire’s plane and even rejected Musk’s offer of $5,000 to shut down @ElonJet, which has over 480,000 followers.

“There’s so much traction, I’m doing something right. The celebrity thing –- people like seeing what celebrities are doing, that and the whole emissions thing,” he told AFP, referring to concerns over the planes’ greenhouse gas impact.

“Putting it on Twitter makes it easier for people to access and understand,” Sweeney added.

Another of Sweeney’s Twitter accounts, powered by data from ADS-B Exchange, showed in July that U.S. model and celebrity Kylie Jenner’s plane took a flight in California that lasted just 17 minutes, as Breitbart News reported.

The internet was not pleased.

The star quickly faced a torrent of criticism on social media over concerns about the message it sent regarding climate change while others pointed to the sheer hypocrisy involved.

Jenner was labeled a “climate criminal” for the rather quick private jet flights with her boyfriend Travis Scott, in a response that followed one drawn by Taylor Swift for her frequent hops by private jet.

“They tell us working class people to feel bad about our once a year flight to a much needed vacation while these celebs take private jets every other day as if it’s an Uber,” tweeted @juliphoria, in another example of the outrage.

“We will track anything because honestly, if somebody really was a bad actor, and they wanted to know where this stuff is, you can build the electronics for $100 and just deploy receivers to pick up the same signals yourself,” said Streufert from ADS-B Exchange, acknowledging the data is already out there. It just needs to be distributed.

Climate activists have also been called out after being tracked taking multiple flight in their private jets they once through were entirely private matters, as Bill Gates has been forced to acknowledge:

In some parts of the world, governments have made clear the technology and resulting information is not welcome and is ready to move against it – by force if necessary.

Chinese state media reported in 2021 the authoritarian Communist government had confiscated hundreds of receivers used in crowd-sourced flight tracking, citing the risk of “espionage.”

“In many cases, it’s authoritarian regimes that don’t like this exposure,” Streufert said.

A clash between cartel gunmen led to the discovery of at least six bodies and two severed heads along a highway north of the tourist hotspot of Acapulco.

The gruesome case took place in the early morning hours of Friday when authorities in the state of Guerrero responded to a rural community in Quechultenango. The crime scene area is a little over sixty miles north of Acapulco.

When authorities arrived at that location, they found a truck that had been shot up numerous times and set on fire. Near the vehicle, authorities found six bodies and two severed heads.

The Guerrero Attorney General’s Office confirmed the discovery of the bodies in a prepared statement claiming that they would be investigating the case.

The gory crime scene comes at a time when multiple cells from rival drug cartels continue to fight for control of beach corridors to move drugs into Mexico from Central and South America, control of vast drug farming areas in remote rural areas, and the large-scale distribution of drugs in and around Acapulco.

Despite several years of intense violence, Acapulco Mayor Abelina López has tried to minimize the violence in her city and has even been mocked publicly for claiming that hunger and high heat are to blame for most of the crimes.

The Senate on Sunday passed the $700 billion Inflation Reduction Act, a scaled-down version of the Build Back Better Act.

The Senate voted to pass H.R. 5376, otherwise known as the Inflation Reduction Act, 51-50. The legislation passed on a party-line vote, with Vice President Kamala Harris breaking the tie.

“It’s been a long, tough and winding road,” Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said ahead of the vote.

The Inflation Reduction Act arose after Schumer and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) struck a deal on a slimmed-down version of the Build Back Better Act. The Inflation Reduction Act focuses on reducing the deficit and curbing inflation, extending enhanced Obamacare subsidies, spending more than $300 billion on climate change programs, and allowing Medicare to negotiate the price of drugs.

House Republican Study Committee (RSC) Chairman Jim Banks (R-IN) has detailed the 50 most radical aspects of the legislation.

Perhaps ironically for Manchin, the bill would not reduce inflation, according to the Penn Wharton Budget Model and the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

The legislation would also hit manufacturers hardest with a 15 percent corporate minimum tax, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT).

The Inflation Reduction Act would also add more “fuel” to the “inflation fire,” according to Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO), the ranking member of the House Budget Committee. He explained that the Inflation Reduction Act utilizes budget gimmicks and fake offsets to mask the true cost of the bill. Smith said the bill would add $114 billion to the debt when accounting for Manchin’s fake gimmicks.

The bill goes to the House, where it will likely pass, barring any major disputes that have yet to arise.

The House Freedom Caucus released a statement after the vote, declaring their opposition to the Inflation Reduction Act:

The fact is that Democrats’ latest spending bonanza has far more to do with enacting their socialist ‘Green New Deal’ agenda than truly helping Americans suffering from staggering 9.1% inflation. • Iran turns off UN nuclear watchdog cameras at atomic site ––

Iran has turned off two surveillance cameras used by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog to monitor one of the country’s atomic sites, state television has reported.

The report did not identify the site, but it appeared to be a new pressure technique by Tehran as western nations seek to censure Iran at a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) this week.

The Iranian state television report described the two cameras as monitoring “OLEM enrichment levels and flowmeters”. This appeared to refer to the IAEA’s Online Enrichment Monitors, which look at the enrichment of uranium gas through piping at enrichment facilities.

Iran is currently enriching at both its Fordo and Natanz underground nuclear sites.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has so far had extensive co-operation with the International Atomic Energy Agency,” state TV said in its report.

“Unfortunately, the agency, without considering this co-operation … not only did not appreciate this co-operation, but also considered it as a duty of Iran.”

Tehran said its civilian nuclear arm, the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, monitored the shutdown of the cameras.

It said 80% of the existing cameras were IAEA “safeguard” cameras and they would continue to operate as before. Safeguards refer to the IAEA’s inspections and monitoring of a country’s nuclear programme.

But an Iranian official warned Tehran was now considering taking “other measures” as well.

“We hope that they come to their senses and respond to Iran’s co-operation with co-operation,” Behrouz Kamalvandi, a spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, said.

“It is not acceptable that they show inappropriate behaviour while Iran continues to co-operate.”

Iran’s move comes after IAEA director-general Rafael Mariano Grossi criticised Iran for failing to provide “credible information” about unexplained, manmade nuclear material discovered at three Iranian sites — long a point of contention between the agency and Tehran.

Iran already has been holding footage from IAEA surveillance cameras since February 2021 as a pressure tactic to restore the atomic accord.

Iran and world powers agreed in 2015 to the nuclear deal, which saw Tehran drastically limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. In 2018, then-US president Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the accord, raising tensions across the wider Middle East and sparking a series of attacks and incidents.

Talks in Vienna, where the IAEA is based, over Iran’s tattered nuclear deal have been stalled since April.

Since the deal’s collapse, Iran runs advanced centrifuges and has a rapidly growing stockpile of enriched uranium.

Nonproliferation experts warn Iran has enriched enough uranium up to 60% purity — a short technical step from weapons-grade levels of 90% — to make one nuclear weapon if it choose.

Iran insists its programme is for peaceful purposes, although United Nations experts and western intelligence agencies say Iran had an organised military nuclear programme through 2003.

Building a nuclear bomb would still take Iran more time if it pursued a weapon, analysts say, although they warned that Tehran’s advances made the programme more dangerous.

In a statement to the IAEA on Tuesday, France, Germany and the UK warned the moves taken by Tehran were “further reducing the time Iran would take to break out towards a first nuclear weapon and it is fuelling distrust as to Iran’s intentions”.

“The IAEA has been without crucial access to data on centrifuge and component manufacturing for a year-and-a-half now,” the statement warned.

“This means that neither the agency, nor the international community, know how many centrifuges Iran has in its inventory, how many were built, and where they may be located.”

The countries urged Iran “to stop escalating its nuclear programme and to urgently conclude the deal that is on the table”.

But just before the announcement, the head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran insisted the country had no secret nuclear activity and accused the West of making a “political move” by trying to censure his country.

“Iran has had maximum co-operation with the IAEA,” Mohammad Eslami said, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.
