Sundance: Disney Focuses Its Searchlight on Horror Cannibalism With Charmer Who Cuts Up Dates and Eats ‘Em(Showbiz 411)

You will want to become a vegetarian after watching “Fresh.” Or should I say, “Flesh.” This is a horror movie that is pretty disgusting, not terribly clever, but one that Disney- yes, Disney– will release this year.

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, Mimi Cave’s “Fresh” is a movie about cannibalism. Yes, cannibalism, the eating of people. Yes, Disney. It’s not a parody or a satire like “Get Out.” It’s a straight up horror film about a charming doctor, played by Sebastian Stan, who seduces women, kidnaps them, and carves out pieces of them for sale to high paying customers. Eventually, they’re all carved up and dead.

Written by Lauryn Kahn, I guess “Fresh” is supposed to be hip. It’s way too hip for me, that’s for sure. (Hip may be on Dr. Steve’s menu.) Disney will release it not on DisneyPlus but on Hulu, and try and distance their brand name. But it’s Disney, folks, nonetheless.

Plodding along the lines of “Get Out” and “Parasite,” “Fresh” may considered hip because a woman wrote it and another one directed it. But women can make the same mistakes as men. Just because you’ve got a good cinematographer and production designer doesn’t mean you’ve got a good movie.

At his country house, Steve has imprisoned other women when he brings Noa (two by two?) to his lair. She wakes up drugged and chained in a room, where Steve explains how he’ll be carving her up. And he does. From different women he’s taken pieces of their posterior, legs, and other body parts. We get to see interspersed scenes of Steve’s rich, fat customers chowing down on his victims. At one point, he invites Noa to have one of his gourmet meals, and they discuss which part came from which girl.

(Is this a sly comment on veganism vs. carnivores? I doubt it, and the intent isn’t there for satire.)

All that saves the film is the casting. Noa is played Daisy Edgar Jones, who comes mostly from TV and is very appealing. Noa’s best friend is Mollie, played by Jojo T. Gibbs, and she makes an impressive movie debut. Dr. Steve is none other than Marvel’s Bucky Barnes, Sebastian Stan, who is not getting good advice on film roles– he should not have done this. But maybe it’s part of his Disney-Marvel deal.

Of course the whole thing ends up with a bloody climax and denouement. Cave manages to ratchet up the tension and drama, but nothing here is as sophisticated as they think it is. There is a slight twist when Mollie meets Steve’s family, but I’ll leave that unspoiled here in case you see “Fresh.”

I’m bewildered by this turn for Searchlight, the studio of “Nomadland” and “The Shape of Water,” and so many wonderful films. I can’t image the former stewards of this studio wanting this on their resume. But horror is cheap, and it’s ‘in’.

Late in the day on Nov. 30, Jeff Zucker, the president of CNN Worldwide, summoned his star anchor and friend, Chris Cuomo, to a meeting in the network’s skyscraper overlooking the Hudson River.

Mr. Zucker was joined by the network’s chief marketing officer — and his secret romantic partner — Allison Gollust. They had to deliver a delicate message.

Mr. Zucker told Mr. Cuomo that CNN was suspending him because of his unethical interactions with his brother, New York’s governor. Mr. Cuomo was shocked and offered to resign. Mr. Zucker countered that the anchor might be able to return at some point, according to people with knowledge of the conversation.

Mr. Cuomo felt reassured. He and Mr. Zucker were confidants, their fortunes entwined. Mr. Cuomo didn’t bother to consult a lawyer.

Barely 24 hours later, a letter arrived at CNN. It was from a lawyer representing a woman who had worked with Mr. Cuomo years earlier at ABC News. She said he had sexually assaulted her and that, in the heat of the #MeToo movement, Mr. Cuomo had tried to keep her quiet by arranging a flattering CNN segment about her employer at the time.

The letter described it as an “abuse of power at CNN to attempt to silence my client.”

While a spokesman for Mr. Cuomo denied the allegations in the letter, it set in motion a chain of events that would quickly upend one of the world’s most powerful news networks.

By week’s end, Mr. Zucker had fired Mr. Cuomo, telling him that a drumbeat of scandals had become “too much for us.”

Two months later, Mr. Zucker was forced to resign. On Tuesday, CNN announced that Ms. Gollust, too, was leaving the network.

Publicly, Mr. Zucker blamed the failure to disclose his relationship with Ms. Gollust. But other forces had set the stage for his downfall.

CNN had skidded into third place in cable news ratings. A key investor had criticized the network’s opinionated, personality-driven programming. Mr. Zucker had clashed with a top executive at CNN’s parent company. And he had made powerful enemies out of Mr. Cuomo and his brother, the former New York governor.

By the time of Mr. Cuomo’s ouster, the law firm that had been hired to investigate his behavior had turned its attention to Mr. Zucker and his management of a network where his intimacy with sources and employees had been both his calling card and Achilles’ heel.

Mr. Zucker’s abrupt departure has thrown the future of CNN into chaos, just as it was poised to introduce a highly anticipated streaming service and to come under new corporate ownership.

Mr. Cuomo is hoping to extract tens of millions of dollars from CNN. Star anchors are revolting. Employees are wondering whether, without Mr. Zucker at the helm, the network’s soon-to-be-owners at Discovery Inc. will fundamentally change CNN’s sprawling news operations.

Shortly after this article was published online, Jason Kilar, the chief executive of CNN’s parent company, WarnerMedia, announced Ms. Gollust’s resignation. In a memo on Tuesday evening, he wrote that an internal investigation “found violations of company policies,” including CNN’s news standards and practices, by Mr. Cuomo, Mr. Zucker and Ms. Gollust. “I realize this news is troubling, disappointing and, frankly, painful to read,” Mr. Kilar wrote.

Risa Heller, a spokeswoman for Mr. Zucker, said, “Jeff was never aware of the full extent of what Chris Cuomo was doing for his brother, which is why Chris was fired.”

Steven Goldberg, a spokesman for Chris Cuomo, said, “Mr. Cuomo felt very close personally and professionally to Mr. Zucker, which is part of what makes this so difficult and hurtful.”

In a release on Tuesday evening, Ms. Gollust said, “WarnerMedia’s statement tonight is an attempt to retaliate against me and change the media narrative in the wake of their disastrous handling of the last two weeks. It is deeply disappointing that after spending the past nine years defending and upholding CNN’s highest standards of journalistic integrity, I would be treated this way as I leave.”

Ms. Heller didn’t have an immediate comment on Mr. Kilar’s memo. Mr. Goldberg declined to comment.

More than 30 people familiar with the recent tumult — including the woman on whose behalf the letter was written to CNN — described the events and ethical violations that led to a leadership collapse at “the most trusted name in news.”

A Hamptons Clambake

The ties between Mr. Zucker, Ms. Gollust and Mr. Cuomo — as well as Andrew Cuomo, who resigned as governor last August — ran deep.

Mr. Zucker had met Ms. Gollust at NBC, when she was a young publicist for the “Today” show and he was its 26-year-old executive producer. As he climbed the ranks, eventually becoming NBCUniversal’s chief executive, the pair continued to work closely together. Ms. Gollust even moved her family to the floor above Mr. Zucker’s in an Upper East Side building.

Then, in 2011, NBC’s new parent company forced Mr. Zucker out.

Around then, Governor Cuomo was planning to throw a birthday party for his girlfriend, the lifestyle impresario Sandra Lee. He asked Ms. Lee to recommend someone to organize the event. She suggested Ms. Gollust.

The resulting party — a clambake on a Hamptons beach — was such a resounding success that Mr. Cuomo decided Ms. Gollust should work for him. In 2012 she became the governor’s communications director.

A few months later, in January 2013, CNN hired Mr. Zucker. The next month, Ms. Gollust left Mr. Cuomo and Albany and rejoined her former boss as the network’s head of communications.

Following a Playbook

CNN was struggling. Once the leader in 24/7 news, its ratings had fallen, its programming seen as stale. Mr. Zucker’s mission was to rejuvenate the network.

At NBC, he had turned around the moribund “Today” show by embracing feel-good news and nurturing stars like Katie Couric. More triumphs followed for Mr. Zucker, as shows like “The Apprentice” and “Fear Factor” were hits with viewers and helped elevate Donald J. Trump and Joe Rogan into cultural touchstones.

At CNN, one of Mr. Zucker’s first creations was a peppy morning show called “New Day.” To co-host the show, Mr. Zucker recruited Chris Cuomo, an ABC News correspondent who had shined in reporting from war and disaster zones.

Within months of his arrival, Mr. Cuomo began pushing ethical boundaries.

In December 2013, he interviewed Governor Cuomo about a train crash in the Bronx. Media critics objected that it was impossible for someone to impartially report on their sibling.

Afterward, Mr. Zucker barred Chris from interviewing or covering Andrew.

“New Day” was a modest hit. But Mr. Cuomo was polarizing. Some colleagues said he could go from charming to bullying in a flash. More than once, he sent emails and text messages that colleagues considered rude and even threatening.

Yet Mr. Zucker was loyal. In 2018 he awarded Mr. Cuomo his own show in the coveted 9 p.m. slot, competing with stars like Rachel Maddow at MSNBC and Sean Hannity at Fox News.

Mr. Cuomo’s combative style made him an ideal on-air foil for President Trump. “Cuomo Prime Time” quickly became CNN’s highest-rated show. The success only strengthened Mr. Cuomo’s bond with Mr. Zucker.

After Mr. Zucker underwent heart surgery in 2018, he and Mr. Cuomo spent hours talking during long walks in Central Park.

Mr. Zucker soon signed off on a multiyear contract that paid Mr. Cuomo more than $6 million annually.

An Eye for Spectacle

The onset of the pandemic stoked Mr. Zucker’s hypercompetitive instincts, on display since his days as a high school tennis champion. During the Trump years, he had led CNN to record-high ratings and roughly $1 billion in annual profit.

Now, in the Cuomo brothers, he saw a singular opportunity.

Governor Cuomo was having a moment. His televised briefings were calm and filled with data, a stark contrast to the often baffling pronouncements from the Trump administration. There was talk of him running for president.

Then Chris Cuomo contracted Covid. He quarantined in and broadcast from the basement of his 6,000-square-foot home in East Hampton, N.Y. His ratings soared.

With his eye for spectacle, Mr. Zucker lifted the ban on Chris Cuomo interviewing his brother. Beginning in April 2020, the Cuomos ruminated on air about how the virus had disrupted society and their lives.

Mr. Zucker loved it. “Authenticity and relatability and vulnerability — that’s what the brothers Cuomo are giving us right now,” he gushed to The New York Times in April 2020.

But their on-air bonding looked less charming after The Washington Post reported that Governor Cuomo had helped his brother get preferential access to scarce Covid tests, with state troopers escorting his nasal swabs to a lab.

CNN defended its anchor, saying he had “turned to anyone he could for advice and assistance, as any human being would.”

FORMER Editor of National Lampoon and beloved journalist Partick PJ O'Rourke has died at 74, as the author and satirist is remembered for his "great literary accomplishments."

News of the journalist's death from complications from lung cancer was confirmed by United Talent Agency on Tuesday.

"Our dear friend and cherished Grove Atlantic author P. J. O’Rourke passed away this morning from complications of lung cancer," Deb Seager, vice president and spokeswoman at his publisher, Grove Atlantic, said in a statement.

"A journalist and political satirist, O’Rourke wrote over twenty books on subjects as diverse as politics, cars, etiquette, and economics, including his two #1 New York Times Bestsellers, 'Parliament of Whores' and 'Give War a Chance,'" she added.

O'Rourke's co-host, Peter Sagal, on the NPR game show Wait Wait Don't Tell Me!, tweeted: "I'm afraid it's true. Our panelist and my dear friend PJ O'Rourke has passed away."

Writer Drew Cline also affirmed the writer's death, saying: "I just confirmed with PJ’s publicist that it’s true. RIP, my friend. You’ll be deeply, deeply missed. Damnit."

A fixture in journalism, O'Rourke was a regular correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly, The American Spectator, and The Weekly Standard.

The 74-year-old was also a frequent panelist on NPR's game show Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me! and columnist at The Daily Beast.

O'Rourke wrote 20 books, best known for Holidays in Hell, a collection of his articles as a freelance foreign correspondent, as he examined political concerns such as global warming and famine from a libertarian perspective.

Tributes to the author quickly flooded social media after the news of his death hit the web.

National Review editor Richard Brookhiser wrote: "P.J. O'Rourke and I sat together at the 1988 GOP convention. When Bush41 promised the death penalty for drug kingpins, PJ asked, "Even if the drugs are good, and the prices fair?" R.I.P."

CNN's Jake Tapper said: "My deepest condolences to his family and friends."

A fan of the writer chimed in, saying: "RIP P. J. O’Rourke. So enjoyed our several meetings, not to mention all your great literary accomplishments, not the least of which were for National Lampoon. The world is a lesser place without you."

Amid the broadly pessimistic mood of Californian voters, two-thirds of whom believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, the lagging approval for Democrats Feinstein and Harris stands out, said Mark DiCamillo, director of the IGS poll.

"I was amazed at the disaffection for both of the women," DiCamillo said.

The 49% of registered voters giving Feinstein a negative assessment include respondents from core Democratic blocs: those who identify as "strongly liberal," voters under 40 and Latinos and Asian Americans. In all regions of the state — including the major population centers of Los Angeles and the Bay Area, where she is from — a plurality of voters disapprove of her performance.

"I've never seen those constituencies moving to the negative side in unison as we're seeing now," said DiCamillo, who has conducted polls at UC Berkeley and, before that, the statewide Field Poll, on Feinstein's popularity since she joined the Senate.

Most striking is Feinstein's loss of popularity among women voters. Feinstein had typically performed strongly with women ever since her 1992 election, when she and former Sen. Barbara Boxer became the first female senators from California. Now, one-third of women surveyed approve of her performance, while 42% disapprove.

"For her to be underwater among female voters is a very significant and ominous sign for her," DiCamillo said.

Throughout her tenure, Feinstein generally received positive marks from voters and was elected to the Senate six times. But her most recent campaign, in 2018, when she was 85 years old, rankled some in the state; now, at age 88, she is the oldest sitting senator and has had to swat down speculation about her retirement numerous times.

Her standing frayed in recent years with her party's progressive flank, which complained that Feinstein, as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, was not tough enough on former President Trump's nominees to the Supreme Court. She has made some overtures to strongly liberal voters; namely, softening her support for the Senate's filibuster rule in order to advance voting rights legislation. But her popularity has been low since January 2021.

Her colleague, Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla, gets slightly higher grades from voters in the IGS poll: 34% approve; 26% disapprove. A plurality of respondents — 40% — have no opinion of his job performance, signaling that Padilla, 48, remains an unknown to many in the state since being appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom last year to serve the remainder of Harris' Senate term.

For Biden and Harris, the tepid reception from voters in reliably blue California underscores their larger woes in terms of public opinion.

Respondents are evenly split in their regard for Biden, with 47% approving and 48% disapproving. That marks a two-digit negative shift since the last IGS poll, in July, when his standing was at 59% approval and 37% disapproval.

While Biden, 79, still has the approval of 72% of California Democrats, that support dropped by 14 points in the last six months. Among voters with no party preference, his approval ratings plunged 15 points in that time, with 50% now disapproving of his performance.

Harris' polling has followed the same downward trajectory as Biden's; it is not uncommon for a vice president's numbers to lag behind those of the president. But there's little sign Harris, 57, is getting a boost in support that would be expected from voters in her home state.

Even in the regions of the state where she has a personal connection — the Bay Area, where she spent most of her life, and Los Angeles, where she has a house with husband Douglas Emhoff — her approval is only slightly higher than her statewide average.

"I get the sense from our polling the state hasn't really warmed up to her as the sitting vice president," DiCamillo said.

California voters continue to hold the U.S. Congress in low esteem, with 72% of respondents disapproving of its performance and 20% approving. The findings fit in with a long-term trend of dissatisfaction with Congress; for the last 12 years, at least seven in 10 Californians have given it a negative grade.

Voters in the state also remain glum about the country's future. Less than a quarter of registered voters believe the U.S. is on the right path, while 67% say it is headed in the wrong direction. The negative assessment holds across all party affiliations, geographical regions and racial groups.

Notably, the state's youngest voters have a particularly bleak outlook. Just 18% of registered voters between ages 18 and 29 think the country is on the right track. DiCamillo posited that this group has been especially affected by COVID-19.

"There's frustration with the government and its inability to get a lot of things done," he said. "I don't think they warm to this hyperpartisan world that they're living in, either. There's really a disaffection with politics that perhaps wasn't there in the past."

The Berkeley IGS poll surveyed 8,937 California registered voters Feb. 3-10. The poll was administered online in English and Spanish. The estimated sampling error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.

THE HASS AVOCADO

The Hass avocado is known as the king of the avocado world and originates in California after it was patented by postman Rudolph Hass in 1935.

The Hass is high in healthy fats and soft enough to be easily whipped into guacamole.

Grocers also preferred the Hass due to its durability and long shelf life.

The fruit thrives in warm climates with plenty of sun and rain and was cloned to be grown in Mexico.

Although the Mexican Hass is identical to the Californian version, Mexico produces the fruit on a much grander scale, harvesting about 1.5 million tons a year compared to California, which produces only 188 thousand tons a year.

In the past six weeks, Michoacán has exported more than 135 thousand tons of the avocados to the US.

Eight out of 10 avocados purchased in the US come from Michoacán, Mexico, the only state in the country that the US imports from since 1997 as the fruits in the facility were certified to be free of dangerous pests that could threaten American growers.

The US said it has reached a deal that could allow avocados from the neighboring Mexican state of Jalisco to be exported to the US later this year.

The US health inspector was allegedly threatened by someone in Jalisco after he blocked their shipment of avocados, leading to the ban being imposed on February 11.

Steve Taft, president of Eco Farms in California, said he has been hearing from wholesale clients worried about running out the key ingredient for guacamole and avocado toast.

Michoacán is 'the big bully on the block. They dictate the market, so we have to be careful not to get carried away,' Taft said, according to Bloomberg.

He expects prices to rise by as much as 25 per cent depending on the length of the ban.

Avocado prices hit $26.23 per nine-kilogram box, double what they cost last year. The price is nearing the highest in two decades, behind only a brief spike above $30 last July because of global demand and the end of the growing season in Mexico.

Guacamole lovers have seen the price of a single avocado rise to as much as $2.50 at their supermarkets from just $1.24 last month. They cost 99 cents in January 2021.

Mission Produce, the biggest distributor of avocados in the U.S., said the company is doing what it can to 'mitigate the impact as much as possible,' including trying to source for additional product around the world.

The Dominican Republic is the next largest avocado producer in the world, but the majority of harvest is sold within the country.

The US only imports about 1 percent of its total supply from the Dominican Republic. After Mexico, the country gets most its avocados from California and Florida.

Although the US boasts the original Haas avocado that most enjoy around the world and is replicated in Mexico, Mexico produces the fruit on a much grander scale, harvesting about 1.5 million tons a year compared to California, which produces only 188 thousand tons a year.

Francesco Brachetti, co-founder of Avocaderia, an avocado bar in New York City, said consumers won't see the full impact of the avocado blockade because there's a lag between when fruit ships and when it's sold in the US.

'The last couple of years have been unique, so we'll take it with caution and wait for this situation to evolve,' Brachetti told Bloomberg.

Raul Lopez, the Mexico manager of the market research company Agtools, told the Washington Post that prices would only continue to rise as the US depletes its avocado supply amid the suspension.

'In a few days, the current inventory will be sold out and there will be a lack of product in almost any supermarket,' Lopez said.

'The consumer will have very few products available, and prices will rise drastically.'

Chipotle Mexican Grill, known for its guacamole and Mexican food, said it was working with its suppliers to ensure it has enough avocados on demand.

Chipotle is 'working closely with our suppliers to navigate through this challenge,' the company's Chief Financial Officer Jack Hartung said in a statement.

'Our sourcing partners currently have several weeks of inventory available, so we'll continue to closely monitor the situation and adjust our plans accordingly,' Hartung said.

The company did not say how much the prices for its dishes that use avocado would go up, only that the company has already been contending with higher costs.

Taco Bell said it would be able to avoid impacts from the suspension due to how it gets its guacamole.

'Taco Bell is not impacted by the US halting avocado imports from Mexico. We import guacamole and not whole avocados, which is not impacted by the current ban,' the company explained in a statement.

Moe's Southwest Grill, another popular Mexican-food chain in the US, and did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com's request for comment

Jonny Hernandez, a San Antonio restaurateur who owns 11 eateries, told Kens5 he has enough avocados for two weeks and expects dishes featuring the food to increase by 50 percent.

'It'll start affecting prices tomorrow,' he said. 'We're already dealing with labor and supply issues… That is going to compound everything.'

Alfonso Brito, who owns two Mexican eateries in Utah, said his businesses were already reeling from the pandemic, so the coming supply crunch will serve as yet another blow to his livelihood.

He told KJZZ that prices have been fluctuating everyday, and he expects things to get worse.

'It raised like 50 to 60 percent,' he said. 'I can find avocados for 48 dollars today, but then next it's like 58 and then next day it's 80 dollars.'

The Paycheck Protection Program is intended to help businesses meet their payroll during the pandemic, but scores of people have faced charges that they used the federal loan money on extravagances like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, jewelry and lavish vacations.

Now the authorities in Miami say a woman there went to another extreme: using part of a $15,000 P.P.P. loan to pay a hit man.

The woman, Jasmine Martinez, 33, received the loan on April 20, 2021, two weeks before a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt shot Le’Shonte Jones to death as she walked to her apartment building with her 3-year-old daughter, the Miami-Dade police said in an arrest warrant dated Feb. 9. Ms. Martinez made withdrawals from her bank account totaling more than $10,000 in the days before the killing, the police said.

The police arrested Ms. Martinez and Romiel Robinson, a man Ms. Martinez was in a romantic relationship with, on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the killing of Ms. Jones, 24, a Transportation Security Administration employee at Miami International Airport, according to arrest warrants in the case. The Miami Herald reported on the warrants on Tuesday.

Miami-Dade police last week also announced the arrest of Javon Carter, an ex-convict who they believe to be the hit man. Mr. Carter was charged with first-degree murder and the attempted murder of Ms. Jones’s daughter, who was grazed by bullets in the attack, the police said.

The police found a video on Mr. Carter’s cellphone, taken about two hours after Ms. Jones’s killing, in which he was counting a “large sum” of money and saying, “just another day in the office,” according to an arrest warrant.

The police believe the shooting was the culmination of a long antagonism between the two women.

Fallon Zirpoli, a lawyer representing Ms. Martinez, said in a statement on Tuesday night that Ms. Martinez “has always denied any involvement in this tragedy since the first time law enforcement approached her last summer.”

Jonathan Jordan, a lawyer representing Mr. Robinson, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. It was unclear whether Mr. Carter had a lawyer.

The program under which, the police allege, Ms. Martinez obtained a loan was part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. The federal government, wanting to get the relief money out fast, waived much of the vetting that lenders traditionally do on business loans, but the absence of those standards meant that fraud was highly likely.

An academic paper from August by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin estimated that about 1.8 million of the program’s 11.8 million loans — more than 15 percent — totaling $76 billion had at least one indication of potential fraud. Numerous people have been arrested and charged with misusing pandemic relief funds.

In July 2020, a man in Florida who received nearly $4 million in federal loans was arrested on bank fraud and other charges after buying a blue Lamborghini for $318,497, federal prosecutors said. In August 2020, a man in Texas who received more than $1.6 million from the same federal program was arrested on bank fraud and other charges after buying, among other things, a 2019 Lamborghini Urus for $233,337.60, prosecutors said.

It was unclear whether Ms. Martinez owned a business or how she was able to obtain a P.P.P. loan. Ms. Zirpoli declined to comment on whether Ms. Martinez received a P.P.P. loan, saying she has seen no evidence related to the matter.

The brazen daylight killing of Ms. Jones in front of her toddler shocked the community.

When police officers arrived on the scene, they found Ms. Jones and her daughter with “multiple gunshot wounds” outside their apartment building. Ms. Jones died at the scene and the child was airlifted to a hospital, the police said.

Surveillance footage showed the mother and toddler walking toward their apartment when a man later identified as Mr. Carter got out of a gray 2019 Nissan Sentra and began shooting at them with a semiautomatic pistol, the police said.

The police say the killing occurred after a series of violent acts were inflicted on Ms. Jones over the years by Ms. Martinez or people connected with her.

In May 2018, police officers investigating an unrelated matter witnessed Ms. Martinez run up to Ms. Jones and begin punching her in the face, the police said. Ms. Martinez was charged with battery.

While testifying in that case, Ms. Jones was punched and had her cellphone and other belongings stolen while walking to her car from the courtroom, the police said. Kelly Nelson, who had been dating Ms. Martinez, was one of those arrested and charged with armed robbery in that case, the police said.

In March, Ms. Jones reported that she was being harassed and offered money not to testify in the robbery case, the police said. Ms. Martinez sent Ms. Jones a message on social media asking her to tell the authorities that Mr. Nelson did not have a firearm during the robbery, the police said.

But Ms. Jones continued to cooperate with prosecutors and told of the harassment during a deposition on April 9, weeks before her killing.

Mr. Nelson awaits trial on the armed robbery charge, according to The Miami Herald.
