A secret tape made after Columbine shows the NRA's evolution on school shootings

Soon after the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, senior leaders of the National Rifle Association huddled on a conference call to consider canceling their annual convention, scheduled just days later and a few miles away.

Thirteen people lay dead at a high school in Colorado. More than 20 were injured. Images of students running from the school were looped on TV. The NRA strategists on the call sounded shaken and panicked as they pondered their next step into what would become an era of routine and horrific mass school shootings.

And in those private moments, the NRA considered a strikingly more sympathetic posture toward mass shootings than the uncompromising stance it has taken publicly in the decades since, even considering a $1 million fund to care for the victims.

NPR has obtained more than 2 1/2 hours of recordings of those private meetings after the Columbine shooting, which offer unique insight into the NRA's deliberations in the wake of this crisis — and how it has struggled to develop what has become its standard response to school shootings ever since.

The tapes of the NRA discussions were recorded secretly by a participant and shared on the condition that the participant's name not be divulged. NPR has taken steps to verify the tapes' authenticity, including by confirming the identities of those speaking on the tapes with two sources and comparing the voices on the calls with publicly available audio.

In addition to mapping out their national strategy, NRA leaders can also be heard describing the organization's more activist members in surprisingly harsh terms, deriding them as "hillbillies" and "fruitcakes" who might go off script after Columbine and embarrass them.

And they dismiss conservative politicians and gun industry representatives as largely inconsequential players, saying they will do whatever the NRA proposes. Members of Congress, one participant says, have asked the NRA to "secretly provide them with talking points."

Asked for comment, a current NRA spokesperson said, "It is disappointing that anyone would promote an editorial agenda against the NRA by using shadowy sources and 'mystery tapes' in order to conjure up the tragic events of over 20 years ago."

The NRA considered other options as well, as illustrated by this exchange:

Philips Ventilator Recall Troubles Deepen as FDA Finds New Issues

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked Philips to conduct more tests on the foam used in its recalled ventilators, after the agency found several new issues at the Dutch company’s manufacturing facility.

The medical equipment company recalled some breathing devices and ventilators in June because of a silicone-based foam part that might degrade and become toxic, potentially causing cancer.

The FDA noted, in a so-called form 483, that between April 2016 and January 2021, Philips was aware of 14 instances of issues related to potential foam degradation with its different sleep and respiratory devices.

Philips, which in September said it will repair and replace the 15 million devices recalled globally, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The company has not sufficiently demonstrated that other devices containing this foam should not also be recalled, and its risk analysis was inadequate, the agency said in the form.

The Form 483 lists observations of issues that could lead to potential FDA rule violations.

The agency said the procedures for design change were not adequately established and the design validation did not ensure that the device conforms to defined user needs and intended uses.

The FDA had initially approved a plan that Philips developed, to repair the foam in the recalled devices with a different silicone-based foam.

But that was before the agency found new information during its manufacturing facility inspection, which showed that the silicone-based foam used in a singular, similar device marketed outside the United States had failed a safety test for the release of certain chemicals of concern, called volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The FDA has requested that Philips retain an independent laboratory to perform additional testing to determine what, if any, potential safety risks may be posed to patients by the silicone-based foam.

New Head of Oklahoma National Guard Removes Vaccine Mandate

Adjutant Gen. Thomas Mancino is removing the vaccine mandate for the Oklahoma National Guard, according to a Thursday memo obtained by The Oklahoman.

"No negative administrative or legal action will be taken" against guard members who refuse the COVID-19 vaccine, the memo reads.

Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt appointed Mancino, a 35-year veteran of the National Guard, to replace former Adjutant Gen. Michael Thompson on Wednesday.

Stitt sent a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Nov. 2 requesting the suspension of COVID-19 vaccine mandates for members of the Oklahoma National Guard. The move caused friction between the governor and Thompson, the Tulsa World reported.

"This mandate violates the personal freedoms of many Oklahomans, as it asks them to potentially sacrifice their personal beliefs in order to not lose their jobs," Stitt wrote.

Stitt's office has denied Thompson was replaced due to his opinion on vaccine mandates and said the change in command was in the works since October, The Oklahoman reported.

"The clarified policy on COVID vaccinations for Oklahoma Army and Air National Guardsmen reflects the governor's ability to assert his command authority over the men and women of the Oklahoma National Guard while they are within the state's borders," Lt. Col. Geoff Legler told the outlet.

Thompson wrote in an Oct. 27 memo, now superseded, that vaccines were required for active-duty guardsmen and detailed the repercussions, The Oklahoman said.

"Uniformed members and Title 5 federal civilian employees who elect not to receive the vaccine will be counseled regarding the consequences of not being vaccinated," Thompson wrote. "These consequences will depend on the individual's status."

Declining to take the vaccine could result in an inability to mobilize or receive training at federal military installations.

Stitt's cabinet has been defiant against the recent Biden vaccine mandate for businesses of over 100 employees, according to KFOR.

"Biden's vaccine mandates are a clear abuse of power," Attorney General John O'Connor said. "He does not have the authority to make healthcare decisions for Oklahomans."

Nov. 13 (UPI) – The Biden administration has announced that Medicare Part B premiums will increase 14.5% in 2022.

The 14.5% increase will raise the standard monthly premium from $148.50 this year to $170.10 in 2022, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service.

The increase is higher than an earlier estimate of $158.50 for the standard premium for 2022, CNBC reported.

The Medicare Part B annual deductible will also increase in 2022 to $233 from $203 this year, according to CMS' latest announcement.

"Medicare Part B covers physician services, outpatient hospital services, certain home health services, durable medical equipment, and certain other medical and health services not covered by Medicare Part A," the CMS said Friday.

The CMS blamed the price hike on rising prices and utilization of the healthcare system, congressional action that limited the increase in the 2021 Part B premium, and the possibility of having to cover patients treated with Aduhelm, a "high-cost" drug to treat Alzheimer's disease.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Aduhelm in June. The drug manufactured by Biogen was the first approved for the debilitating form of dementia since 2003, but some experts have argued that there is insufficient evidence it helps patients with the disease.

announcement ended most COVID-19 restrictions as the state came very close to hitting

a key metric: 70% of eligible adults getting vaccinated. That metric gave a clear target

for the public to focus on reaching — and knowing when they reached it, restrictions would

end.

Unfortunately, that didn't last. The delta variant soon took hold and turned the state's

declining COVID cases and hospitalizations upside down.

Just over a month later, Gov. Brown reinstated mask mandates for both indoor spaces and

large outdoor events. But this time, the state did not say what it would take to drop

those rules — and months later, still hasn't. Outside experts disagree with that strategy.

“I think it is a mistake that Oregon doesn’t have metrics,” said Dr. Monica Gandhi, an

infectious disease doctor and professor of medicine at the University of California, San

Francisco.

She specializes in HIV. She has seen how missteps and a loss of trust hurt the effort to

fight the disease in the early days.

Dr. Gandhi said a lack of metrics now with COVID-19 mandates threatens the public's trust.

“It is imperative that we retain, as a populous, trust in public health officials. When

mandates are put into place for public health emergencies they have to be accompanied by

metrics of when they come off and what constitutes a reason to come off. Otherwise I am

Twitter’s Treatment of Project Veritas Reveals Double Standard on Leaked Materials

Twitter is allowing the posting of a New York Times article based on materials leaked by federal investigators about Project Veritas, the investigative journalism organization whose offices were recently raided by the FBI. This flies in the face of the treatment of the New York Post blockbuster articles on Hunter Biden’s laptop, which twitter censored because it was “content obtained without authorization.”

When the first Hunter Biden “laptop from hell” stories were published by Emma-Jo Morris at the New York Post in 2020, Twitter said it would censor the Post’s reporting because it had a policy against posting “content obtained without authorization.”

Now Twitter is allowing the spread of a New York Times story that contains privileged attorney-client information between Project Veritas and its lawyers, leaked to it by federal investigators who are using their power to intimidate and persecute journalists.

As Breitbart News reported at the time, Twitter took extreme measures to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story, locking the accounts of not only the New York Post, but also the account of White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, and the official account of the Trump campaign.

ATF Raid On Missouri Gun Shop Has Sheriff Seeing Red

Skelton Tactical has been open for business in the small central Missouri town of Osage Beach for about three years, and owner James Skelton says during that time he’s never seen or spoken to anyone from the ATF. Apparently the agency has been keeping an eye on him, however, since agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and explosives conducted a raid on his business earlier this week.

“It makes me mad I was not notified,” Helms said. “ATF agents were in my office the day before, to discuss a separate issue and they did not tell me a thing,” Helms said. “They called me at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, and apologized for not telling me, saying they were not comfortable having too many people know about the raid before it happened. They were hitting several gun shops as part of an annual thing.”

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the long-serving New York liberal Democrat who has been instrumental in each of former President Donald Trump’s two impeachments, is considering retiring after his term expires during next year’s midterms, according to sources who spoke to the New York Post.

“People are wondering when he would decide to retire,” said one associate, who also went on to say that Democrats “could lose control of the House of Representatives next year, with Nadler facing a prolonged future in the minority,” The Post added.

“He has a fighting spirit but maybe now is the time to exit,” the insider noted further.

The paper continued:

A second person around Nadler said the congressman has refused to give a straight answer when the subject comes up. Nadler, like every member of the House, would be up for reelection in the 2022 midterms. He is unlikely to face a serious primary.

Though the 74-year-old has long been a vigorous and vocal legislator, some say age and ill health have finally caught up with him. Two people who saw him recently said he could barely walk.

In 2019 the Congressman nearly collapsed at a Manhattan press conference and had to be rushed to a hospital. He famously underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2002 and was once so obese he couldn’t use the subway. His wife Joyce Miller was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2020, forcing Nadler to miss part of President Trump’s impeachment trial.

“It’s not the first I’m hearing about it,” said veteran Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf in an interview with The Post. “Does he really want to be in the minority next year? How much more can he get done?”

Several countries, including small island states, said they were deeply disappointed by the change promoted by India to "phase down," rather than "phase out" coal power, the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.

Nation after nation had complained earlier on the final day of two weeks of U.N. climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland about how the deal did not go far or fast enough, but they said it was better than nothing and provided incremental progress, if not success.

Subjects received either bucillamine (900 or 1800 mg over 7 days) or colchicine according to current American College of Rheumatology (ACR) treatment guidelines (1.2 mg initially, followed by 0.6 mg 1 h later). The treatment phase of the study has been completed, and analysis of the results is underway.16

BUC is a DMARD known to be an analogue of d-penicillamine that was introduced in the 1980s for the treatment of RA. d-Penicillamine was historically used as a DMARD in many Western countries during the 1970s and 1980s. Because of only moderate efficacy and a disproportionately high incidence of side effects, it was effectively abandoned in place of more effective DMARDs such as MTX. BUC reportedly has fewer side effects than d-penicillamine does and has been used widely as one of the first-line DMARDs for RA in Japan and Korea. It is approved in Asia only for the treatment of RA.

Students stage walkout at Minnesota school in protest of inaction against accused sexual abuser

On Friday, students at Zimmerman Middle/High School in Zimmerman, Minnesota staged a walkout to protest the school's insisting on making alleged victims go to class with a boy they have accused of sexually assaulting them.

Protesting what appears to be a cover-up incident similar to this one in Loudoun County, the walkout took place despite repeated threats by the school principal, Marco Voce, who told students that they faced suspension if they walked out.

According to the Daily Mail, there was a school board meeting held on Thursday, but the topic was glossed over, and parents were not allowed to even so much as bring up the subject.

More Georgia 2020 Election Corruption Uncovered – Untested Machines Illegitimately Used in Election

Most states have laws that require voting equipment to be tested before each election to ensure they are functioning properly. This process is called Logic and Accuracy Testing “L&A” (or sometimes LAT) and is supposed to be open to the public. Every machine is analyzed through a systematic procedure to make sure the machines record and count votes accurately. They also check that the software on each machine is the proper, certified version and hasn’t been tampered with or manipulated.

In late September of 2020, two counties in Georgia were performing their L&A testing. Both discovered a problem in that the voting machines were not showing the second column of senate candidates. The counties reported the issue to the Secretary of State, who then directed elections officials across the state to cancel L&A testing until the problem could be fixed.

A few days later, on September 30th, a corrected version of the software was distributed to all counties in the state. Because the remedy required changes to the software, the new version had to be installed on every one of the state’s 30,000 machines before the L&A testing could be performed. With less than two weeks before the start of advanced/early voting on October 12th, there wasn’t enough time to schedule and adequately notice the public. The legally required L&A testing had to be completed before advanced/early voting.

Moncla and team then reviewed the tests in three of Georgia’s counties, Cobb, Gwinnett, and Fulton. Cobb and Gwinnett both completed their testing by October 9th but Fulton County would not cooperate. Per a review of minutes from Fulton County Board of Elections, it was determined that Dominion Voting Systems was in the process of installing the new software on Fulton’s machines, but the county had not yet started the L&A testing, and most likely never completed this testing before voting started.

Fulton County finally did provide information to Moncla and it shows that Fulton County did complete L&A testing but this testing wasn’t completed until the end of the month, October 31, 2020. This was well past when the testing should have been completed per Georgia law.

Moncla writes:

It’s clear that the Fulton County voting machines and systems were not L&A tested until after early voting. This means there was no check or verification on how the machines were programmed. It’s important to understand that the majority of all votes for the 2020 general election were cast on the untested machines during early voting (314,985 out of 523,000), making this a very serious problem. There’s also another issue:

The L&A testing should only be performed by county election officials. It is equally important and unacceptable that Dominion was contracted to perform L&A testing of their own equipment. The mandated testing process was not designed to rely upon third-party vendors’ self-verification.

Not only was testing of voting machines completed way after early voting started in Fulton County, Georgia, but this work was done by outsiders (Dominion) which never should have occurred.

Fulton County Georgia voting machines used in the 2020 Election were not adequately tested per Georgia law and this testing wasn’t complete until after 314,000 ballots were cast in early voting. Also, this work was completed by outsiders.

All this indicates a corrupt election result in a state with tens of thousands of vote issues in an election given to Joe Biden by 10,000 votes.

MIT professor emeritus and political activist Noam Chomsky said he believes that while unvaccinated people have the right to refuse a COVID jab, they should “have the decency to isolate” from the community for the safety of others.

Chomsky was asked in an interview whether the COVID vaccine should be required when he made the remark. A clip of his response has garnered 1.9 million views on Twitter and been met with mixed reactions.

“People who refuse to accept vaccines, I think the right response for them is not to force them to, but rather to insist that they be isolated. If people decide, ‘I am willing to be a danger to the community by refusing to vaccinate,’ they should say then, ‘Well, I also have the decency to isolate myself. I don’t want a vaccine, but I don’t have the right to run around harming people.’ That should be a convention,” said Chomsky.

“Enforcing is a different question. It should be understood, and we should try to get it to be understood. If it really reaches the point where they are severely endangering people, then of course you have to do something about it,” he added.
