Everyone has experienced it. While searching for information online you finally come across a news headline that looks like it will provide the exact answers to the questions you’ve been itching to know. Excitedly, you click on the link and begin reading, but before you can finish the first couple of lines – Pop! – A paywall obstructs the rest of the article and you are forced to either pay a fee for full access or abandon the site and continue your search elsewhere. Though this encounter may seem only like a trivial inconvenience, the ethics of news paywalls extends far past simple annoyances.

Around the early 1990s, owning a computer was becoming commonplace for many American households. To keep up with the times, mass media outlets began creating websites where readers could now access stories on the Internet in addition to traditionally printed newspapers. At first, these companies were just happy to be part of the digital scene, but soon, profitability became an issue. Because information was now available for free from the comfort of one’s own home, many consumers stopped going out to purchase newspapers and consequently, news outlets saw huge declines in profits. Online forums such as Craigslist also took a large bite out of the classified advertising revenues that traditionally supported newspapers. To make up for such losses in print media, online news companies turned to digital advertising. While this method worked for a while, the irritating experience of being bombarded by noisy pop-ups led to the rise of users installing ad-blocking software which has “severely damaged the ability of such news sites to make money from advertising” (Felle, 2016).

Due to the problems surrounding digital advertising, “publishers have embraced a ‘pivot to readers’ and explored ways to generate more revenue from [the audience itself through] subscriptions and memberships” – thus, the paywall was born (Bilton, 2018). In 1996, The Wall Street Journal was the first to implement a “hard paywall,” which required readers to pay a subscription upfront or be blocked from accessing articles completely (Simon & Graves, 2019). Since then, new “soft” paywall models have been developed, such as the popular “metered paywall” where readers are given a limited number of free articles per month before the user is required to purchase access to the newspaper’s content (Howard, 2018). Regardless of the type of paywall used, the result is the same: Readers must pay the news company directly to receive access to information. According to Reuters Institute, now “more than two-thirds of leading newspapers (69%) across the E.U. and U.S. are operating some kind of online paywall, a trend that has increased since 2017, especi

Lawsuits Mount Against Hospitals Banning Ivermectin: 'The Hands of the Physicians Have Been Tied'

Although major physicians associations oppose its use, a number of doctors nationwide believe the drug Ivermectin is an effective treatment for COVID-19 and they prescribe it within the confines of their own offices. Doctors who work in hospitals, however, must abide by their hospital administration's policies. This is causing friction among some hospitals, doctors, and patients.

One of the most recent cases involves Virginia critical care physician Paul Marik, who last month sued Sentara Norfolk General Hospital to immediately allow him to prescribe Ivermectin to his COVID-19 patients.

The hospital banned the use of Ivermectin for COVID-19 patients after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned against it, saying on their website it approved Ivermectin to treat "worms, head lice and skin conditions like rosacea," but "data do not show Ivermectin is effective against COVID-19," adding, "Clinical trials assessing Ivermectin tablets for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19 in people are ongoing."

Norfolk Circuit Court Judge David Lanetti, who is also a Regent University Law School professor, denied Dr. Marik's request to immediately be given the right to prescribe Ivermectin to his hospital patients. However, Dr. Marik's attorney, Fred Taylor, told The Virginian Pilot the case will still move forward to trial. …..

Republicans are warming to weed.

Nearly half of Republican voters support federally decriminalizing cannabis, and GOP lawmakers are now beginning to reflect their constituents’ view by increasingly supporting broad legalization at the state and federal level.

“We need the federal government just to get out of the way,” said Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), who introduced the first Republican bill in Congress to decriminalize marijuana, tax and regulate the industry and expunge certain records this past week. She pointed to more than 70 percent of Americans supporting the idea.

Stronger Republican involvement could hasten a snowball effect on Capitol Hill, where Democrats lead the charge on decriminalization but lack results. It could also chip away at Democrats’ ability to use cannabis legalization to excite progressives and younger voters as the midterms approach.

“When the culture becomes more accepting of something, even the most resistant groups get tugged along,” said Dan Judy, vice president of North Star Opinion Research, which focuses on Republican politics. “I don't want to directly conflate marijuana legalization with something like gay marriage, but I think there's a similar dynamic at play.”

Earlier this year, North Dakota’s GOP-dominated House passed a marijuana legalization bill introduced by two Republican lawmakers — the first adult-use legalization bill to pass in a Republican-dominated chamber. And Mace's bill marks the first time a Republican has proposed federal legislation to decriminalize cannabis, expunge certain cannabis convictions and tax and regulate the industry.

As Republicans wade into the weed group chat, they are bringing their principles, constituents and special interest groups. When Mace introduced her bill on a freezing day on the House triangle, she was surrounded at the podium not by Drug Policy Alliance and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, but by veterans groups, medical marijuana parents, cannabis industry lobbyists and Koch-backed Americans For Prosperity.

Many GOP proposals include lower taxes and a less regulatory approach than Democratic-led bills, while often maintaining elements popular among most voters, like the expungement of nonviolent cannabis convictions.

“I tried to be very thoughtful about what I put in the bill that would appeal to Democrats and Republicans,” Mace said in an interview on Monday. “Which is why criminal justice reform is part of it. It's why the excise tax is low.”

The motivations bringing Republicans to the table are also changing.

Former Capitol Hill cannabis advocates like Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) advocated primarily for their state legalization programs, but Mace comes from South Carolina — a state with no medical or recreational cannabis program. She joins other GOP lawmakers who are pushing for federal policy to move beyond their own states — they include Reps. Matt Gaetz and Brian Mast of Florida, where only medical marijuana is legal, and libertarian-leaning Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, which does not yet have a medical program.

“Every two years, you get a new crop of members from both parties, but certainly from the Republican Party, who don't have to defend the drug war … and they don’t have to prop it up,” said cannabis advocate and former Maryland GOP state delegate Don Murphy. “They are free to vote their conscience.”

Deep divisions remain within the Republican Party, however. After Mace announced her bill, the South Carolina GOP was quick to condemn it — saying they were "unequivocally" against Mace's bill. "Since this will have widespread negative impacts, from rising crime, violence, and mental health issues in children, I think it’s a safe bet to say most Republicans will be against it too,” South Carolina GOP Chair Drew McKissick said in a statement.

Six in 10 younger GOP voters — what Pew described as the “Ambivalent Right” in a recent report — believe marijuana should be legal for medical and recreational use, but older, educated Republicans and Christian conservatives do not feel the same way.

The GOP split came to a head over the past year in South Dakota. Fifty-four percent of voters approved a ballot measure that legalized recreational marijuana last November in a state where only 27 percent of voters were registered Democrats. Despite support from voters, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem — a rising Republican star — supported a court challenge that has tied up the legalization measure since its passage. But while the state waits on a court decision, efforts to legalize marijuana at the ballot box and in the legislature are moving forward in the meantime.

“[Support] is growing because the people voted it in,” said South Dakota Republican Rep. Hugh Bartels, who led the adult-use marijuana study subcommittee over the summer.

Marijuana advocates are gearing up now to put legalization initiatives on the 2022 ballot in deep red states like Missouri, Idaho and Wyoming. The fact that more GOP-leaning voters are supportive of marijuana reform means lawmakers are increasingly out of step with their constituents — a fact some in politics are catching on to.

“We're now in a race,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said in an interview the week after the 2020 election. “If Republicans beat Democrats on marijuana legalization, they're just one or two of those kinds of social issues away from totally just eroding a ton of goodwill“ that Democrats are trying to build with voters.

Republicans who support legalization are viewing the issue through the prism of states' rights, personal freedom, job creation and tax revenue. Many libertarian-leaning Republicans are early supporters of cannabis policy reform, arguing that arresting people for using cannabis is a violation of personal liberties.

Some Republicans also cite the racial disparities in marijuana arrests as a reason to fix federal law — though Democrats focus more strongly on criminal justice reform on the whole. And, as is the case for Democrats, the shift is often generational: Texas Young Republicans announced they support marijuana decriminalization back in 2015.

The shift within the GOP at times is less about lawmakers’ own beliefs about marijuana and more about how much the public has shifted on the subject. Bill sponsors in North Dakota, for example, said they were personally opposed to marijuana, but introduced the bill anyways to head off the possibility of a ballot initiative that would legalize marijuana through the constitution — especially after South Dakota voters approved legalization in 2020.

Bartels himself is “not a real fan of marijuana,” but a draft legalization proposal is “going to get a good solid pitch from me” in the House next session, he said. He's satisfied with how the draft bill handles his chief concerns of public safety and youth use. “It’s a regulation bill, not an industry-leaning bill,” he said.

A lack of motivation to fight cannabis legalization is also a major factor, Judy said. White, conservative evangelicals are one of the largest constituencies against legalization, for example — but most of them are not handing out pamphlets or going door to door campaigning against ballot measures.

“There's definitely a strong sense in a lot of places that the train is leaving the station,” Judy said.

Marijuana reform is poised to make gains in red states now that so many blue states have already legalized it. Advocates are trying to place adult-use legalization initiatives on the 2022 ballot in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Supporters in Wyoming and Idaho are collecting signatures for medical marijuana and decriminalization measures after state lawmakers have punted on the issue.

And one big benefit stands out for Republicans when and where they decide to move forward with legalization: they can tax and regulate the industry in their own way.

In Washington, though Republicans have taken some big steps recently, they do not have control of either house of Congress. Democrats are likely to continue to focus on moving Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s decriminalization bill, which has a high tax rate and social equity grant programs that deter conservatives.

But Republicans are one step closer to reaching a compromise with Democrats on the issue — if Democrats are willing to negotiate. Leaders such as Steve Hawkins, president of the U.S. Cannabis Council, hope that Mace’s bill will broaden the pool of support.

“This is an issue where there's not a ton of partisan division,” Judy said. “In this day and age, to find any issues with majority bipartisan support is like finding a unicorn.”

Mac Pro apparently, a purdy penny indeed. The mentioned above remove all modules tip is a great way to go as well. I recommended bootable usb wiping clean and install from it, but if you’re not able to make usb or know how, you could always do Network or Recovery install while wiping internal. Power off and while booting up before Chime hold CMD + R or CMD+Option+R for recovery boot, or; N or Option + N for Network Recovery. When loaded select Utilities and Disk Utility and select your main drive, and reformat/erase it. You can then Partition it into multiple drives to install other OS’s on that you can select to boot from ( by holding Option key during boot before chime until Boot Manager comes up with all bootable drives to choose from) also able to install Windows on one of desired, or just run it out of a VM whenever if needed from within your MacOS (that’s what I do) and would run A1 given VMs are RAM intensive, which you have more than enough of (I’m on my Mac 20/7 and only have 8gb ram with no issues)

Also a simple diagnostic you can run is holding D during boot before chime and it will go into diagnostic mode and run self tests. That should indicate if there’s a memory issue there as well. With crashes and whatnot I would think temp related issues could be culprit, may need to check out what the status is of your thermal paste or pads on your processor, Macs are notorious for using minimum amounts out of factory. You can check your Crash Logs by going to your Utility folder and select the Console app.

Again I highly recommend going to http://www.macbb.com and downloading some helpful system apps (EtreCheck Pro, System ToolKit, BigSur Cache Cleaner, MacMagic, OnyX, Sensei, TechTool Pro 12, TinkerTool System, and prolly more I’m forgetting off top of head) will help diagnose and cleanse Mac. Will also indicate temperature of all drives/sensors and if overheating. That site is the grail of Mac sites IMO thst ive found.

Languishing Walnuts Show How Shipping Crisis Is Hurting U.S. Farmers

ESCALON, Calif., Dec 9 (Reuters) – The shrink-wrapped boxes of fresh California walnuts stacked almost to the ceiling in Don Barton’s California packing facility should be headed to Europe for holiday baking and to Asia for New Year celebrations.

Instead, newly cleaned and shelled nuts – about $10 million worth – are stuck at his processing plant near Sacramento, thousands of miles from their destinations, as the global supply chain crisis squeezes ports.

Transportation and supply-chain problems are hurting farmers across the U.S. West Coast, a major global supplier of specialty crops like fruits and nuts popular at year-end celebrations.

Ships that would normally pick up walnuts from Barton’s company, Gold River Orchards, are skipping the Port of Oakland where the nuts are usually exported, or showing up at odd or unexpected times that make it difficult to get the product to the docks.

“We are shipping right now less than half of what we should be shipping and could be shipping this time of the year, simply because there’s not equipment available,” said Barton, standing amid towering processing machinery and pallets loaded with boxes marked for shipment abroad.

Ships are also skipping the Northwest Seaport complex in Seattle and Tacoma where hay, apples and beans wait to be exported. At the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, freighters wait for weeks for a berth in the harbor, only to then leave abruptly, in many cases without picking up goods for export.

Much of the shipping crunch resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. Home-bound Americans flush with unspent travel and entertainment dollars and government stimulus splurged on everything from food and refrigerators to toys and exercise equipment. The demand for imports overwhelmed supply chains and prompted container shipping lines to focus on the most profitable routes between China and the Port of Los Angeles, skipping others.

Farmers who agreed to deliver fruit, nuts and other products in time for the holidays are defaulting on their contracts, losing business to foreign growers they say may never come back.

At the Port of Oakland, just 679 vessels stopped to pick up goods during the first nine months of 2021, compared with 959 the prior year, said spokeswoman Marilyn Sandifur, although some of the drop was made up by additional cargo carried by larger ships.

“A lot of people count on the high-quality American food products and there’s a demand for them overseas,” Sandifur said. “The challenge is getting them over there.”

German importers have struggled to get California inshell walnuts, a popular seasonal snack, into supermarkets in time for Christmas due to delays of six to eight weeks in ships leaving, said Jens Borchert of German importer Mariani of California.

California’s walnut industry exported 47% fewer nuts in the shell, and 16% fewer shelled nuts during September and October of 2021 than it did in the previous year, the California Walnut Board said in a report. Almond industry data shows a 19% drop in exports in the three months ending Oct. 31 compared with the year-ago period.

Barton says his exports were down by about 75% in October from the previous year. A key contract, to supply walnuts for the holiday season to supermarket chains in Sweden, was canceled after the nuts got held up for weeks waiting for a ship, he said.

ERRATIC SHIPPING SCHEDULES

For Dairy America, a cooperative that is the world’s largest supplier of powdered skim milk, shipping costs have increased by 30% to 40% and contracts have been canceled because of erratic shipping schedules, said Derik Toy, the Fresno group’s supply-chain director.

Last month, the cooperative had to find storage for 18 containers full of powdered milk in Arizona, after numerous scheduling changes by a shipping line contracted to take them from Los Angeles to Colombia. The cooperative will now have to pay late fees on the containers it rented to carry the milk.

Peter Friedmann, executive director of the Agriculture Transportation Coalition, said his members reported drops in exports by 22% during the first four months of 2021 alone.

The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, the nation’s busiest seaport complex, have dominated media coverage of supply-chain woes. But congestion has made it harder for farmers to export their goods across the nation, Friedmann said.

At the ports in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, exports are down 11% this year and 20% off from the five-year average, said Steve Balaski, interim director of business development for the Northwest Seaport Alliance.

Other professional athletes whose careers are now on hold include French tennis player Jeremy Chardy, who commented on his situation:3

He went ahead with the second, and now has severe lung damage. Mechin said:

“Damaging healthy people to preserve the health of the weakest, a choice of backward logic. I would not get vaccinated again if it had to be done again.”

Jury Finds Actor Jussie Smollett Guilty on 5 of 6 Charges That He Faked Attack

Jurors have found former "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett guilty on five of six counts of staging a racist and anti-gay attack on himself in downtown Chicago nearly three years ago.

The decision comes after jurors heard several days of testimony from several witnesses and Smollett himself, who called claims that he staged the attack “100% false.”

The jury in Smollett's trial was tasked with deciding whether Smollett is guilty on six counts of a low-level felony for making what prosecutors say was a false police report about the alleged attack. He faces one count of felony disorderly conduct for each time he gave a report to three different officers.

Special prosecutor Dan Webb told the jury Wednesday that the evidence against Smollett is “overwhelming,” and that what he did in January 2019 caused Chicago police to spend enormous amounts of time and resources investigating an alleged crime that turned out to be fake. Smollett, who is Black and gay, told police someone put a noose around his neck and yelled racist and homophobic slurs.

“Besides being against the law, it is just plain wrong to outright denigrate something as serious as a real hate crime and then make sure it involved words and symbols that have such historical significance in our country," Webb said.

He also accused Smollett of lying to jurors, saying surveillance video from before the alleged attack and that night contradicts key moments of Smollett’s testimony.

“At the end of the day, he lacks any credibility whatsoever," Webb said.

Jussie Smollett's defense attorney told jurors that the charges against the actor rely on the testimony of brothers who are “sophisticated liars” and “the worst type of criminals.”

Attorney Nenye Uche said in his closing argument that during testimony last week in the Chicago courtroom, one of the brothers “said ‘I don’t recall' so many times, it is ridiculous.”

“The entire prosecution’s case, including the foundation of the case, is built like a house of cards," Uche said.

Taking the witness stand this week, Smollett repeatedly denied the attack was a fake, telling a prosecutor “there was no hoax on my part” and that two brothers who testified against him are “liars.”

The disorderly conduct charge is a class 4 felony that carries a prison sentence of up to three years, but experts have said if Smollett is convicted, he would likely be placed on probation and ordered to perform community service.
