Citadel CEO and founder Kenneth Griffin was the winning bidder of a heated competition to buy a rare first printing of the U.S. Constitution at Sotheby’s on Thursday evening, for a total price of US$43.2 million, the auction house announced Friday.

Griffin beat out a crypto collective known as ConstitutionDAO, which reportedly had amassed about US$40 million from more than 17,000 donors, to secure the work after a nearly eight-minute bidding battle. The veteran art buyer, considered a top-200 collector by ArtNews and the owner of works by dozens of blue-chip artists—including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Willem de Kooning, and Jackson Pollock, among many others—will be loaning the work to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Ark. The nonprofit museum was founded by Alice Walton, an heir of Walmart founder Sam Walton and a consummate collector, who is also listed among ArtNews’ top 200 collectors. “The U.S. Constitution is a sacred document that enshrines the rights of every American and all those who aspire to be,” Griffin said in a statement. “That is why I intend to ensure that this copy of our Constitution will be available for all Americans and visitors to view and appreciate in our museums and other public spaces.” He added that he is pleased Crystal Bridges will be the first venue to display it, noting that the museum always offers free admission. “We are honored to exhibit one of the most important documents in our nation’s history from our location in the Heartland of America,” Olivia Walton, Crystal Bridges board chairperson said in a statement. “We welcome our neighbors and diverse visitors from across the country and around the world to see the U.S. Constitution alongside our art collection that focuses on telling the story of the history of America.”

The sale was the highest price achieved at auction for any book, manuscript, or printed text, according to Sotheby’s. One of only two of 13 known existing copies in private hands, the document was from the collection of Dorothy Tapper Goldman, wife of the late S. Howard Goldman, a New York real estate developer who died in 1997. In 1988, the same document was auctioned at Sotheby’s for US$165,000.

Less than two weeks before her trial, Ghislaine Maxwell is fighting for documents from the settlement fund for victims of sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

It’s unclear which specific records the British socialite and accused procurer of underage girls is seeking, but Jordana Feldman, the administrator of the Epstein Victims’ Compensation Program, opposes her request.

On Friday, Feldman’s lawyer filed a letter in Manhattan federal court stating she “intends to move to quash defendant Maxwell’s subpoena directed to her.” A representative for Feldman declined to comment, and her attorney didn’t return messages.

The legal scuffle comes as Maxwell battles for certain evidence—including Epstein’s address book of high-flying contacts and a box containing a sex toy—to be barred from her six-week trial, which is scheduled to begin on Nov. 29.

The victims’ fund, which closed in August, functioned as an independent and voluntary alternative to litigation and resulted in nearly $125 million paid out to more than 135 victims of Epstein. As part of the program, applicants provided documentation and were interviewed by Feldman and other administrators. If they received and accepted a settlement offer, the women were required to waive the right to sue Epstein’s estate and “related entities and/or individuals,” including Maxwell.

Earlier this year, Maxwell’s legal team attempted to subpoena Boies Schiller Flexner, a law firm that represents multiple victims of Epstein, to obtain its submissions to the claims program on behalf of accusers. (Among other items, the defense also sought cowboy boots Epstein gifted to Annie Farmer, who is Minor Victim 2 in Maxwell’s indictment, as well as Farmer’s teenage diary.)

In recent court filings, Maxwell’s attorneys again referred to the compensation program when impugning future testimony from Minor Victim 4. They asked Judge Alison Nathan to prohibit evidence on the victim’s identification of Maxwell in a photo array in June 2021.

“It was not until 2020, after making a multi-million dollar claim to the Epstein Victim Compensation fund, that [federal prosecutors] interviewed and then in 2021 showed her photos—the majority of which were men or women much younger than Ms. Maxwell,” Maxwell’s lawyers argued last month.

“Of course, no one thought to ask if her lawyers had shown her photos of Ms. Maxwell as part of her multi-million-dollar request or if she had seen any of the many photographs displayed on the internet of Ms. Maxwell,” they added.

Last December, Maxwell’s camp lashed out at Farmer and asked a judge not to dismiss her civil suit against Maxwell and Epstein’s estate until she disclosed her settlement offer from the Epstein Victims’ Compensation Program.

“The amount of money [Farmer] obtains from the Epstein program is very much a matter of public interest and will go to the very core of [her] credibility during the upcoming criminal trial,” Maxwell’s lawyer, Laura Menninger, wrote.

“The fact that [Farmer] seeks, money from the Estate and from Ms. Maxwell, in the millions of dollars, at the same time she is a government witness in an upcoming criminal trial on the same topic is reason enough to suspect that her newly asserted memories of abuse—without corroboration—are not based on the truth or a desire for ‘justice’ so much as her desire for cash,” Menninger added. “To be clear, Ms. Maxwell adamantly denies [Farmer’s] allegations.”

Sigrid McCawley, Farmer’s attorney, replied that instead of “amicably” resolving the case, Maxwell “submitted a vicious, victim-blaming letter attacking” the accuser.

“Maxwell is not the one compensating Ms. Farmer, and she should have no opinion on why Ms. Farmer is being compensated by the Estate,” McCawley wrote in a letter. “In fact, Maxwell should be quite pleased that she is escaping civil liability in this case without having to pay a dime…”

Having spent his entire career in the world of international finance, Epstein rubbed shoulders with wealthy business leaders, politicians, and royals from across the globe. Jes Staley, Leon Black and Prince Andrew were the first of the high profile alleged Epstein associates to fall. All three have suffered in the court of public opinion, with both Staley and Black losing high-profile and well-remunerated roles as a direct consequence. But there will be more.

When Maxwell’s trial starts and the public learns more about the extent to which Epstein corrupted those around him, we can only hope this prompts a rethink of business ethics. Politicians and Kings are answerable to their electorate and citizens, but business leaders are answerable to their boards and shareholders.

As we have seen with regards to climate change, shareholders are increasingly demanding more. In the past few years, such demands have changed from hollow words into tangible action. In 2018 over $81.7 trillion in assets under management was held by firms who had signed the UN-backed Principles for Responsible investment, committing themselves to incorporate ESG into their investment decisions. Is it time we adopted a similar approach to business ethics? Will Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial be the straw that breaks the camel’s back?

Such an approach would impact few regions harder than the Middle East, especially in countries like Lebanon with weak institutions and an elite used to getting their own way with little if any oversight or regulations. Thanks in no small part to the Drudge Report, who published Epstein’s black book back in 2015, we know about his supposed links to Syrian-Saudi financier Wafic Said, British-Lebanese CEO Amado Fakhre and Saudi businessman Amr al-Dabbagh to name a few.

So far, appearing in Epstein’s black book alone has not been enough to trouble such individuals, but worse could follow. What would happen, for example, were George Nader, the ex-Trump advisor and convicted paedophile, to be dragged into this case? His links run even deeper across the Middle East and could expose those already disgraced by their links to him, such as the Kuwaiti Business tycoon Qutaiba Al-Ghanim.

Allegedly, Qutaiba Al-Ghanim has had to flee Kuwait over numerous corruption charges, yet he enjoys he currently enjoys life in Europe hosting the world’s business elite onboard his yacht Qutayba Al Ghanim. Being linked – no matter how loosely – to Epstein via someone like George Nader could make his life impossible.

When Ghislaine Maxwell takes the stand and exposes the true extent of Epstein’s corrupting influence there will be calls for greater scrutiny. Scrutiny of politicians and, more importantly, scrutiny of captains of industry. Given the interconnected nature of the modern global economy, such scrutiny will have to be global, and where regions push back, this will inevitably hit their bottom line. Such action may seem like a pipe dream, but as we’ve seen in the climate debate, shareholder activism can and does work. Once shareholders wake up to the potential threats that their CEOs and boards might expose their capital to, they will demand action and accountability.

In the coming months, heads will inevitably role as more is known of Epstein’s web of intrigue. If any good will come from this sordid affair, it might just wake people up as to the importance of holding business leaders to higher standards. If only because consumers have shown in the climate debate that they will support environmentally conscious companies. I have no doubt that in the years ahead, they will also show support for ethical companies as ethics cultivates trust, and trust leads to sales which in turn, leads to profit.

When she walked into court on Monday morning for the penultimate pre-trial conference before she faces what will amount to the fight of her life, Ghislaine Maxwell looked just like she did 10 years ago. In fact, she looked better.

Thick black glossy hair. A black turtleneck sweater. Grey slacks. A bottle of Poland Spring in her hand. No cuffs anywhere. A smile, even, as she talked and shared a laugh with her lawyers, who were clearly fond of her. One brushed back her hair, another rubbed her back and shoulder, a gesture of sympathy.

It was a moment that caught me off guard and took me back in time. It reminded me of precisely why Maxwell had once had so many friends. Her vast number of acquaintances may not have all been people she was close with, because her lifestyle was so peripatetic — she was always traveling somewhere or other. Nonetheless, she drew people to her because she was funny, she was witty, she was extraordinarily charming… and, as I was reminded in that courtroom, also supremely confident.

Ghislaine Maxwell, as just about everyone knows, currently stands charged of helping the late sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein traffic and sexually abuse four women, three of whom were underage, as well as lying in a civil suit. (One of the more chilling sentences in the indictment reads: “Maxwell’s presence during minor victims’ interactions with Epstein, including interactions where the minor victim was undressed or that involved sex acts with Epstein, helped put the victims at ease because an adult woman was present.”) Opening arguments are scheduled for Nov. 29. She has denied all charges.

Given the horrific nature of the allegations, it’s not surprising that on Monday — unlike 10 years ago, when she was hosting dinners at her New York townhouse, proselytizing about her efforts to preserve the oceans through her philanthropy — I didn’t see a single “friend” of hers in court. (The only supporter I saw in attendance was her sister, Isabel.)

I knew Maxwell slightly because I am part of the ex-pat British community in New York, so I ran into her from time to time over the years. And I know a good number of her friends. Or former friends, I should say. So, what are they saying amongst each other as she heads to trial?

In the past year, I noticed something as I was reporting Chasing Ghislaine, an ID special (which premieres Nov. 22 on discovery+) and an Audible podcast of the same name: Hardly any of the people who went to drinks at her house or to dinners for Prince Andrew — many of them members of the British upper classes or American plutocracy — wanted to talk about Maxwell on the record. Many of them professed that they were horrified, disgusted at the allegations she is charged with.

One person who went to dinners that included Maxwell, Epstein, and Prince Andrew told me: “I can’t remember the last time I heard anybody say, ‘Poor Ghislaine, she should be allowed to say her story.’ I think everybody’s absolutely horrified, everybody’s embarrassed that somebody in our broader circle of us could have been behaving in such a terrible way.”

But, as I reached out again in the past week to her former friends, there were those — probably more than you think — who still wonder if she is really the monster she’s been pictured as in the media. Some wonder if she may yet prevail before a jury.

Reading this, you may be shocked. I know I was.

But, as I dug further, I began to see the complexity at play: There is questioning, voiced privately among a few people who used to have dinner with her, whether the government can prove its case. Partly that’s because the allegations are from so long ago, the early 1990s to the mid-2000s, but it’s also because these people still cannot see the Hyde in the Jekyll-and-Hyde that Maxwell allegedly is — or was. Jekyll, it turns out, was very dazzling.

People who heard rumors back in the early 1990s about Maxwell “finding girls for Epstein” say that they just do not believe that the Maxwell they knew, who liked designer clothes and expensive restaurants, would have been skulking around school-gates, as has been described in the civil litigation. They just can’t imagine the visual. (That charge is not actually in the government indictment, but one imagines it could come up in court.) “I don’t believe, and nobody that’s ever met her believes that she sat in a car recruiting school-age girls. No. Nobody believes that,” one person said to me.

‘These emails make clear that the defendant was willing to serve in such a role, and that she was eager to please wealthy and influential men by providing them with access to women.’

Maxwell’s lawyers said that if she was trying to ‘ingratiate herself with a friend, so what?’

Their response document states: ‘If her motive is to permit adult women to date her single friends, then it is not to pick up schoolgirls off the street to give “sexual massages” to Jeffrey Epstein.

‘And if she already had access to other powerful and influential men who were in her life, she would not need her friendship or access to Jeffrey Epstein.’

The matter of the emails is set to be debated today at the final hearing before Maxwell’s trial.

The public phase of jury selection, known as voir dire, is set to begin in the Manhattan court room tomorrow.

Opening statements are due on November 29.

Maxwell faces six counts, including enticement of minors, sex trafficking of children and perjury.

The daughter of disgraced tycoon Robert Maxwell denies all of the counts, which carry jail sentences of up to 80 years.

She is being held in a 6ft by 9ft cell at Brooklyn’s bleak Metropolitan Detention Centre and has set aside £5.2million to pay for her defense.

Condemnation of the tweet was swift as many disagreed with the assessment from the driver.

Rittenhouse Lawyer: ‘Scary’ How Many Death Threats Were Received During Trial

Kyle Rittenhouse’s defense attorney Mark Richards said that his client, defense lawyers, and prosecutors have faced numerous death threats during the homicide trial.

After a jury acquitted Rittenhouse, 18, of all charges brought against him, Richards told reporters after the verdict that “everybody in this case” faced death threats.

“And when I say that I mean prosecution, defense—to me it’s scary how many death threats we’ve had,” he remarked.

The lawyer recalled one instance when he answered his phone while on the way home from the Kenosha Courthouse and received a death threat. After the third one, Richards said he stopped answering his phone calls.

There were also unconfirmed reports that Judge Bruce Schroeder and his children received death threats throughout the trial. Schroeder did not make mention of it during the trial, and the Kenosha Police Department didn’t issue a statement on the matter.

Richards on Friday responded to questions about whether Rittenhouse should have waived his Fifth Amendment right and testified last week.

“At certain points we wondered whether we would put him on. We had a mock jury and we did two different juries, one with him testifying and one without him testifying. It was substantially better when he testified,” Richards told reporters.

“But in Wisconsin, if you don’t put a client out on the stand, you’re going to lose. Period,” Richards added, without elaborating.

Related to the video is a 91-page lawsuit filed in Delaware County, PA, alleging proof of individuals conspiring to “destroy, delete, and hide Nov. 3, 2020, election data, materials, and equipment to prevent discovery of election fraud and election law violations.”

Former Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar, who changed election laws in contravention to the legislature before the 2020 election, and multiple local election officials are being sued in this stunning case. The lawsuit—filed on behalf of four plaintiffs—also argues that the Defendants “intentionally created chaos so they would be able to then carry out the acts of election fraud and the election law violations described herein undetected.”

The complaint alleges that the Defendants accomplished this by hiring “incompetent or under-qualified individuals” so they could later hide the fraud “under the pretense of incompetence” of the workers hired for election day. Additionally, when a May 21, 2021 Right to Know (RTK) request for information was made with regard to election data that should have been preserved, the “Defendants fraudulently and intentionally deleted, changed, adulterated, manipulated and/or obscured the information, data, and materials produced in response to the RTK request.”

These actions, allege the Plaintiffs, resulted in the hiding of fraud and election code violations, and the complaint states that the Defendants “knew that they could not reconcile the previously fraudulently reported Nov. 3, 2020 election results.” The lawsuit is clear in its contention that the Defendants knew there was “responsive information” on election day that would have brought the final reported results into question.

The Plaintiffs state they can document and demonstrate the materials destroyed as captured in a partial screenshot of p. 4 of the lawsuit below:

The Plaintiffs claim they have been disenfranchised because of the alleged fraudulent activity. They state their right to sue in quo warranto proceedings or seek mandamus relief if “quo warranto is not recognized as a proper action due to failure or refusal of prosecution” because of their individualized grievances. Quo warranto means one of the legal remedies could be to remove the election officials being charged from office. Boockvar resigned in early 2021.

Prior to the submission of the Presidential race vote totals, President Trump was leading Joseph Biden by 7,515 votes, according to the complaint. The County was the last to submit its totals. The presidential vote total later tallied 88,070 between the two candidates, per the lawsuit.

Starting on p. 44 of the lawsuit, the specific allegations begin to emerge. Election data and materials were missing. Election law violations and/or incidents of election fraud and numerous precincts were referred to the District Attorney for investigation. Additionally, “both Attorney General Shapiro and Jack Stollsteimer failed to act and charge election officers despite referral for investigation.”:

Moreover, instead of working to remedy the missing information, election officials allegedly “conspired about how to respond to the RTK requests, knowing that numerous election laws had been violated and massive election fraud and other irregularities had taken place” and began their plans to conceal their findings.

On or about Apr. 29, 2021, James A Ziegelhoffer, “Ziggy,” told Regina Miller that the Return Sheets and election tapes were not stored with the election data and equipment on the main and second floors.

Instead, Ziggy escorted Miller to the basement of the Voting Machine Warehouse and showed her where everything was “hidden.”

He told her there was “no way they could have been reconciled” for a variety of reasons (p.46), including the use of multiple scanners and missing election data.

Ziggy also said that “the Delaware County Return Board met for weeks” after the election and interviewed election day workers. The Return Board provided those workers with “election data and prompted them to create new Return Sheets” for the election as part of the certification process.

Ziggy told Miller that few people really knew how to fill out the Return Sheets properly.

Ziggy told Miller that the Return Sheets “contained various notes written on the front and back of the sheets detailing missing election evidence need to reconcile” the election.

Ziggy and Attorney Thomas Gallagher also destroyed election data “to hide, secrete, obscure and prevent discovery of election fraud, irregularities, or unreconcilable precinct results” from the November 2020 election.

Additionally, Ziggy and others destroyed machines and proof tapes by placing them in the trash, “stating they will have a campfire to burn the data.” Miller became nervous about what they were doing, informing them “they were violating numerous state and federal laws.” Miller witnessed Gallagher and Ziegelhoffer destroying the election materials (p.51). Ziggy told her “there was no audit value” to the data he was tossing. There is page upon page in this lawsuit documenting their alleged nefarious behavior.

Another figure,James P. Allen, also conspired to destroy election materials.On May 27, 2021, the lawsuit alleges that he instructed the “removal and destruction” of material, election evidence, and data from the election. He was hired in March or April of 2021, “earning a salary of approximately $230,000 annually.” (p.51)

Allen also allegedly “conspired with James Savage to ‘get rid of’ the ‘pads and second scanners'” from the election. He also knew at the time it was a felony. He hid and destroyed election materials, created new results with “Clean V-Drives,” ordered the sorter to be erased, and instructed an “employee to contact Hart to ‘switch off [the] setting to allow [the] scanner to accept ballots for any precincts which is one reason the precincts could not be reconciled.'”

Allen allegedly acknowledged he was aware the Return Sheets were a mess and wrote a letter to justify more and more ballots to potentially allow for ballot stuffing in the County. Savage, Allen, Ziggy, and Gallagher are featured in the opening video provided above.

The above-listed items are a scant slice of the alleged fraudulent acts carried out by a whole host of election officials. Multiple Defendants admitted “they did not follow the law” (p.56). Plaintiff Leah Hoopes witnessed “the machine slicing of ballots, and the ballots being removed from the machine and taken upstairs to be processed unobserved.” Defendants Perrone and Hagan admitted that the machine used to sort and process ballots was “slicing tons of ballots.” The owner of the machines stated that the sliced ballots were not a result of the machine but “were caused by users’ failure with the preparation of envelopes.”

James Savage was allowed “unfettered access” to the Voting Machine Warehouse because he slept there from about Nov. 3 to Nov. 18.

There were numerous examples of inexperienced election workers working the Delaware County election. Some election workers were not allowed to verify signatures on mail-in ballots. The issues are too numerous to list here. Suffice it to say, the election in the County was improperly handled at almost every turn and no one investigated it despite requests for an investigation.

Margot Cleveland, who originally posted the video showing alleged fraudulent behavior, posted a thread highlighting the lawsuit. She confirms that election officials and election workers may have carried out what appears to be egregious election fraud in Delaware County.

The Lawsuit states the Defendants knowingly violated Pennsylvania Right to Know Law as well as their “duties and oaths of office as provided by the Election Code.” The Plaintiffs in the case requested a protective order to enjoin the Defendants from further destroying election material. Plaintiffs also asked that “any and all voting machines, servers, computers, computer codes, hard drives, software and programs, internet records, mobile phone records, ballot images, photocopies or scanned images of ballots, return tapes, and/or tally sheets, paper ballots, return taps and/or tally sheets used in and/ related to the election” be produced. Plaintiffs also asked for access to all the equipment associated with the Nov. 3, 2020 election as well as permission to conduct a “fully independent and non-partisan forensic” investigation.

Notably, Defendant,James Savage,who was the supervisor and chief custodian of the Delaware County Voting Machine Warehouse— sued former President Donald Trump and two local GOP poll watchers for “allegedly making ‘deliberate, malicious, and defamatory statements and insinuations’ about him in the wake of the contentious 2020 Presidential Election,” according to the Delco Times.

The U.S. Army has started to weed out unvaccinated soldiers by blocking their re-enlistment, including Reserve troops and Guardsmen.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Aug. 25 directed all military branches to ensure service members receive the vaccine as COVID case numbers surged over the summer.

Fox News obtained a Nov. 16 memorandum from Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth detailing how commanding officers should flag soldiers who refuse COVID-19 vaccination orders, which will allow the service to retire the troops or separate them "upon expiration of term of service."

Flagged troops will also see suspension from "favorable personnel actions," according to the memo. Such actions include but are not limited to reassignment and promotion, attending military or civilian schools, and earning decorations and awards, according to Wormuth's memo. Soldiers refusing the vaccination will be given a General Order of Reprimand unless they are given a religious or medical vaccine exemption.
