The Sri Lankan family is part of a group that let the former N.S.A. contractor stay with them as he fled U.S. espionage charges.

HONG KONG — A Sri Lankan couple that sheltered former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden when he fled to Hong Kong in 2013 have been granted asylum in Canada along with their two children, a nonprofit group said.

Supun Thilina Kellapatha and Nadeeka Dilrukshi Nonis arrived in Toronto on Tuesday with their children, Sethumdi and Dinath, according to For the Refugees, the group that sponsored their asylum application. They will travel to Montreal and settle there as permanent residents, the group said.

The family had been in limbo for years after being denied asylum in Hong Kong in 2017. For the Refugees had long lobbied Canada to accept them, saying they faced persecution and deportation in Hong Kong, a Chinese territory with about 10,000 refugees from all over the world.

We are thrilled beyond measure to see this long ordeal finally come to an end for Supun, Nadeeka and their children,” Marc-André Séguin, president of For the Refugees, said in a statement.

“After over a decade in limbo they can now begin to build new lives in Canada, reunited with the rest of their family and free of the constant fear and worry that marked their existence as high-profile asylum seekers in Hong Kong,” he added.

Snowden arrived in Hong Kong in May 2013 after leaving his job at an N.S.A. facility in Hawaii with thousands of classified documents about vast U.S. surveillance programs. He initially stayed in a high-end hotel, where he gave an interview to journalists from The Guardian who also published some of the documents.

The bombshell revelations became the center of global attention, dominating headlines for weeks. Snowden soon decided to leave the hotel out of safety concerns, and one of his lawyers arranged for him to stay with some of his clients in Hong Kong’s community of refugees and asylum seekers, where he thought no one would look.

Facing U.S. espionage charges, Snowden fled about two weeks later to Russia, where he was granted permanent residency last year.

Largest Underwater Eruption Ever Recorded Gives Birth to Massive New Volcano

A huge seismic event that started in May of 2018 and was felt across the entire globe has officially given birth to a new underwater volcano.

"This is the largest active submarine eruption ever documented," the researchers wrote in their paper.

The new feature, thought to be part of a tectonic structure between the East African and Madagascar rifts, is helping scientists understand deep Earth processes about which we know relatively little.

The seismic rumbles of the ongoing event started on 10 May 2018. Just a few days later, on 15 May, a magnitude 5.8 quake struck, rocking the nearby island. Initially, scientists were perplexed; but it didn't take long to figure out that a volcanic event had occurred, the likes of which had never been seen before.

Between 25 February and 6 May 2019, this network detected 17,000 seismic events, from a depth of around 20 to 50 kilometers below the ocean floor – a highly unusual finding, since most earthquakes are much shallower. An additional 84 events were also highly unusual, detected at very low frequencies.

We caught up with Pastor Artur Pawlowski at police headquarters,

where his baggage was being held hostage after his SWAT team-style arrest at the airport.

Artur shared his testimony with us, confessing his concern for the future of not only himself but the country.

We were quickly met by an officer who asked us not to film, “kindly,” in his own words.

Artur rebutted with the now known fact

— after many instances of secret arrests by the police

— they don’t like to be filmed!

Artur got his bags safely; we did not know if he was even going to be allowed to leave, due to the possibility of an arrest.

There is a court hearing on October 13 where the world will learn Artur’s fate

— will he be jailed for 21 days, or will he be set free from this draconian nightmare that is deemed non-compliance with a health order?

3 lawsuits filed by opponents of Big Island geothermal plant

Environmentalists and Hawaii island residents have filed three lawsuits seeking further review of the state’s only geothermal power plant before the facility is allowed to produce electricity for consumer use.

The lawsuits were filed late last month in Hilo Circuit Court against Puna Geothermal Venture, The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Sunday.

The Hawaii Department of Health determined in September that Puna Geothermal did not require additional environmental review before Nevada-based parent company Ormat Technologies Inc. restarts the facility.

The 38-megawatt power plant’s geothermal wells were isolated or covered by lava in the massive Kilauea volcano eruption that began in May 2018. Puna Geothermal supplied 31% of the Big Island’s electricity before the shutdown.

The lawsuits name the state health department and Puna Geothermal as defendants and claim that the plant’s environmental impact statement is inadequate and outdated. The project was originally completed in 1987.

Two of the lawsuits were filed Oct. 21. The first case is on behalf of the nonprofit environmental group Puna Pono Alliance and residents living near the plant who claim the plant adversely affects health and property.

The second lawsuit claiming the state and Puna Geothermal violated environmental regulations was filed on behalf of an environmental activist and two residents.

Puna Pono Alliance and others have for years fought the company over emissions of hydrogen sulfide gas in incidents including a well blowout in 1991 and a smaller leak in 2014.

The third lawsuit filed Oct. 23 accuses Puna Geothermal of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” and claims fluid injection into geothermal wells during the 2018 eruption caused explosions that ejected lava under the plant out through a fissure. Mike Kaleikini, Puna Geothermal senior director of Hawaii Affairs, denied the fracking claim in 2019.

Kaleikini did not comment on the lawsuits, but said in an email he hopes the power plant will be back online sometime next week.

Dream

I had a dream last night. Most of my dreams are inconsequential, a few have import.

A bright yellow canary appeared.

Immediately took notice because the dream otherwise had no color to it.

I put out my finger and was amazed when the bird landed on it. Very friendly.

Then it came to my ear and hovered - and then it spoke - saying it had a message for me.

The message was relayed - But as has happened in other dreams, the actual words were not remembered.

Then woke up, thought about what canaries mean. Wasn't hard - mebbe no verbal message is really needed - seems like a 'heads up' re imminent habbenings.

I did NOT get a 'doom' feeling about things, more of a 'stuff gonna happen, be prepared'.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that Hawaii's Kīlauea volcano began erupting Wednesday after a swarm of earthquakes.

Powell Says Diversity a ‘Big Focus’ for Boston, Dallas Fed Jobs

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said diversity will play a key role in deciding who fills the top jobs at the Boston and Dallas regional Fed banks, whose current presidents are stepping down following criticism of their trading activity. “I can absolutely guarantee you that we will work hard in both of these processes to find and give a fair shot to diverse candidates for those two jobs,” Powell said Thursday in a hearing before the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services. “It’ll be a big focus of both of those processes.”

The presidents of the two Fed banks on Monday separately announced plans to take early retirement following criticism of their financial-market trading activity last year. Each bank’s board of directors will select a replacement candidate, which must then be approved by the Fed’s Board of Governors in Washington.

In the Fed’s 107-year history, just one regional bank president has been Black, the current leader of the Atlanta Fed, while no Hispanic American has led one of the 12 branches and only two Asian Americans have.

Dianne Feinstein Unveils Bill to Mandate Coronavirus Vaccine or Testing for Domestic Flights

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on Wednesday proposed legislation which would require proof of a coronavirus vaccination or a negative coronavirus test in order to fly domestically ahead of the holiday season.

“We know that air travel during the 2020 holiday season contributed to last winter’s devastating COVID-19 surge. We simply cannot allow that to happen again,” Feinstein, 88, said in a statement.

Ensuring that air travelers protect themselves and their destination communities from this disease is critical to prevent the next surge, particularly if we confront new, more virulent variants of COVID-19. This bill complements similar travel requirements already in place for all air passengers – including Americans – who fly to the United States from foreign countries. This includes flights from foreign countries with lower COVID-19 rates than many U.S. states.

“It only makes sense that we also ensure the millions of airline passengers that crisscross our country aren’t contributing to further transmission, especially as young children remain ineligible to be vaccinated,” the California Democrat added.

The bill has won the support of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Public Health Association, Feinstein said.

“Vaccination is a critical strategy to end the COVID-19 pandemic, and vaccination requirements in multiple settings are an important mechanism to boost vaccination rates, prevent infections and hospitalizations and save lives,” Dr. Barbara D. Alexander, president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, said in a statement. “The Infectious Diseases Society of America supports Senator Feinstein’s legislation to require vaccination for domestic air travel as part of our nation’s broader COVID-19 vaccination strategy.”

The introduction of Feinstein’s bill comes as some airlines are getting ready to fire unvaccinated employees.

United Airlines said Wednesday it’s beginning the process to fire nearly 600 employees who have refused to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as required by the world’s third-largest carrier.

United said 99% of its employees have complied with the mandate, but noted that it’s run out of options in working with the remaining 593 who have not received the shot.

Special Counsel John Durham, the attorney tapped by the Trump administration to audit the Russia investigation, has reportedly handed down a new set of subpoenas, including to a law firm with ties to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.

The grand jury subpoenas for documents were issued earlier this month, according to CNN, after Durham charged Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann for allegedly knowingly making a false statement to the FBI.

Investigators from the special counsel’s office are seeking additional documents from Sussmann’s former law firm, Perkins Coie, an indication that Durham may be looking to add to Sussmann’s charges or to bring cases against other defendants.

Durham was reportedly investigating whether Sussmann lied to the FBI regarding who — if anyone — he was representing when he told the Bureau about communications between the Trump Organization and the Kremlin-connected Russian bank Alfa Bank.

The indictment against Sussmann states that the former federal prosecutor lied to top FBI lawyer James Baker in a meeting on September 19, 2016. At that time, Sussmann presented data and analysis from cybersecurity researchers who suspected the Trump Organization was using a secret server to communicate with Alfa Bank.

Former DNI John Ratcliffe Refutes General Milley Claim Surrounding Any Intelligence That China Was Worried About a U.S. Attack

Earlier today Joint Chiefs Chairman, General Mark Milley, again claimed that intelligence was gathered and given to him showing that China was fearful of an imminent attack from the United States prior to Milley’s phone call with Chinese military to assure them the U.S. was not about to attack. This is the same claim that General Milley made yesterday [LINK] about the same issue.

Immediately after this repeated claim, former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe directly refuted Milley on Fox News with Martha MacCallum. The intelligence products used by the Pentagon come from the DNI office, and John Ratcliffe noted there was no intelligence that China held any such concerns. As a result, any justification claim that Milley makes about his motives for the call surrounding “deescalation” are nonsense.

The Chinese did not escalate an issue because the issue did not exist. The Chinese were not worried the U.S. was going to attack. General Milley’s claims are based on a false premise. The question is, did another intelligence agency purposefully lie to Milley, or is Milley making it all up?

If you and I were sitting on a park bench doing nothing, there would be no concerns. However, if you sat down and I said, “I’m not going to hit you“, suddenly you would become concerned. That is the essential outlook for what appears to have taken place.

The intelligence apparatus of the United States created a completely false assertion, false intelligence; and then Milley acted unilaterally based on that false assertion. Keeping in mind that DNI Ratcliffe is very adamant there never was any such intelligence.

♦ If General Milley was that easily manipulated by the intelligence community, most likely the CIA, it doesn’t speak well for his own judgement and discernment considering he is the chief pentagon advisor to the President.

♦ If General Milley was willing to be manipulated by the CIA, and act upon intelligence he knew or suspected to be false, well, then he’s a conspirator within a purposeful effort to undermine the Office of the President and U.S. foreign policy.

Neither of these two scenarios is good; and they both present evidence of a superseding Fourth Branch of Government, operated by a rogue and Machiavellian intelligence community.

As John Ratcliffe noted in his rebuke of General Mark Milley’s justification, if the claim of legitimate intelligence was true, someone would have briefed President Trump about it. No-one from the office of the Director of National Intelligence, or the DoD, or the National Security Council ever saw any evidence that anything like what Milley is claiming actually existed.

The false intelligence that underpins the Milley phone call with China could be the thread that exposes the hidden Fourth Branch of government. If congressional representatives and honest independent media are willing to pull it and not let go.

U.S. default would cause 'irreparable' harm, Yellen warns again

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday agreed that any default on U.S. debt would cause irreparable harm as well as an ensuing financial crisis and recession.

Yellen, asked by a member of the House Financial Services Committee if the damage done by failure to meet the federal government’s debt obligations would be “irreparable,” answered: “Yes.”

Her remarks were the latest in a series of dire warnings Yellen has issued as Congress remains deadlocked over the matter of lifting or suspending the debt limit amid wrangling over the legislative agenda of the Democratic majority and Biden administration. Yellen has said the government will run out of cash around Oct. 18 unless Congress raises the limit on the federal debt, currently capped at $28.4 trillion. After that date, the Treasury would be “simply in an impossible situation,” Yellen said during an appearance before the committee on Thursday. “We won’t be able to pay all of the government’s bills.”

The debt ceiling came back into effect in August after a two-year suspension, and the Treasury Department has been employing “extraordinary measures” to fund the government since. Yellen earlier this week told lawmakers those measures will be exhausted around the middle of October, earlier than most analysts had expected, after which the government will have insufficient funds to meet all of its obligations, ranging from Social Security payments to the principal and interest due on Treasury bills, notes and bonds. Failure to meet those obligations would mark a first-ever U.S. default, which Yellen has repeatedly said would be “a catastrophe.” “We’re likely to end up with a financial crisis, certainly a recession,” Yellen told the House committee on Thursday. It would also have “longer-lasting consequences of higher interest rates for everyone who borrows.”

That’s because the U.S. credit rating would certainly be slashed, and international creditors who have long owned Treasury debt on the basis of it being backed by “the full faith and credit” of the U.S. government would no longer view those securities as “risk free.” That would make it more expensive for the federal government - and everyone else - to borrow.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the U.S. central bank’s ability to contain the fallout of such an event is limited. “No one assume that we can really do much,” Powell told lawmakers on Thursday. “No one should assume the Federal Reserve or anyone else can shield the American people from the consequences of that.”

Mexico Raises Key Rate a Third Time Amid Spike in Prices

Mexico’s central bank raised borrowing costs for the third consecutive meeting Thursday as policy makers’ efforts to slow above-target inflation failed to head off a jump in consumer prices.

Banco de Mexico, known as Banxico, increased its key interest rate by a quarter-point to 4.75%, in a split decision. All but one of 26 economists surveyed by Bloomberg predicted the 25 basis-point hike. Consumer prices in Mexico and across Latin America have spiraled up above official targets as economies reopen to pent-up demand and snarled supply chains. At the same time, households have faced surging food and energy costs, prompting Mexico’s government to impose a cap on prices for cooking gas last month. Inflation did ease somewhat in August, but headed back up in early-September toward 6%, nearly twice the central bank’s 3% target.

The central bank forecast earlier this year that inflation would rise as the economy’s rebound gained traction, and then slow again as pandemic-related disruptions proved temporary. In fact, it’s spent 15 months above target since closing out May 2020 at 2.84%. As consumer prices remained elevated and inflation expectations moved higher, Banxico in June unexpectedly raised borrowing costs for the first time since 2018 with a quarter-point hike and matched that increase in August.

Banxico’s post-August decision communique and the minutes of that meeting suggested policy makers were in a data-dependent mode, but the mid-September reading reported last week showed annual inflation had jumped to 5.87% from the prior 5.60%. Perhaps more concerning to Banxico, core prices, which include less volatile items such as tradable goods, surpassed economists’ expectations in early September and accelerated to 4.92% in comparison with a year earlier.

High core prices could create expectations that supply shocks are lasting. Economists in a survey by Citigroup Inc.’s local unit Banamex published last week raised their year-end inflation forecast to 6.1%, up from 5.6% in early July.

The same survey puts the key rate at 5% by year-end whereas the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg is 5.25%. The central bank sees core inflation peaking at 5.1% in early 2022 before converging to target only by the second quarter of 2023.
