If you start at 2:25 (the first part is on the Catholic church) the vid gives their interpretation of the meanings of recent events. I had told family a while back that I suspect that XI was a good man and that what he is doing is trying to drag China away from its overlords. POTUS seems to genuinely like and enjoy him as a person and as a man. He does not take shots at him, just as he does not against NK leader Kim.

It is not very often that a new piece of hardware comes along and immediately captures the attention of the entire maker community. The Raspberry Pi and the $9 C.H.I.P. are a couple of recent examples, but the ESP8266 module from Espressif Systems (espressif.com) wins this prize. This little board — PHOTO 1 above - The ESP8266 module (ESP-01) — is only about the size of a nickel, yet contains a powerful 32-bit microcontroller and a Wi-Fi interface, and it can be purchased for around $4 in single unit quantities

The first projects built with this module all used a microcontroller to control the ESP8266 as a Wi-Fi peripheral using an AT command set over a serial interface. While this was made to work, some of the projects suffered from stability problems as the ESP8266 firmware continued to evolve. Lately, however, a group of enterprising individuals have made the ESP8266 Arduino compatible. This is important for numerous reasons:

It allows people familiar with the Arduino IDE (Integrated Development Environment) to develop software for the ESP8266 module.

It allows the software developed in the Arduino IDE to be run directly on the 32-bit microcontroller on the ESP8266 module, eliminating the need (in many cases) for a separate microcontroller altogether.

It allows the use of numerous third-party Arduino libraries, as long as they don't depend on direct access to the underlying AVR hardware.

Arduino compatibility and the low cost of the ESP8266 are major developments for the Internet of Things (IoT) movement currently sweeping the tech world. Using the ESP8266 allows for very small and inexpensive products to be created that can be controlled and/or monitored remotely.

Note if you plan on putting an ESP8266 module into a commercial product, you will have to pass FCC certification, which can take considerable time and be rather costly.

To understand what a breakthrough this is, consider the cost and size of a traditional Arduino approach to Wi-Fi enabled monitoring and control. First, you have to have an Arduino board (say, an Arduino Uno) from a reputable source which costs between $20 - $30. Then, you have to purchase a Wi-Fi shield for around $20 - $40, bringing the basic system cost to between $40 - $70. Then, consider size. The Uno's dimensions are 2.1” x 2.7”. Attach the Wi-Fi shield and the sandwich is between 1.25” to 1.75” deep and a bit harder to package than the ESP8266 (again, which is the size of a nickel).

Finally, when you consider the ESP8266 has a 32-bit processor which can run at 160 MHz — 10x the speed of the Uno's eight-bit processor — and that it has 512K (minimum) of Flash memory program space to the Uno's 32K, the Uno Wi-Fi solution is looking a little dated.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation understands computers and programming are integral to the future, but noticed fewer students getting into computer science. With the RPi, they hope to rekindle the excitement over microprocessors that many of us felt in the 1970s and 1980s. I, for one, caught the computer bug at that time and haven't ever gotten over it.

While the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s focus is on the educational market, there has been major demand for RPis in the DIYer/hacker community. A Google search for Raspberry Pi on the Internet will net you seemingly endless projects people are powering with RPis.

It is important to note an RPi is a bare bones single board computer built as inexpensively as possible. When you buy an RPi, you don’t get a case, power supply, display, keyboard, mouse, cables, or storage device. All peripherals must be purchased separately. The idea is to connect your RPi to a USB power source, a TV set with HDMI input, a USB keyboard, and mouse. Even with the additional cost of the required peripherals, a computer system based on an RPi is still a bargain.

With the wild fluctuations in fuel prices over the years, world concern over global warming, and simply the idea of creating new and more sustainable technologies, immense interest and progress continues in the world of battery development.

In fact, it seems that we keep hearing about a new breakthrough, and another step closer to that long sought elusive goal of a truly workable battery storage system. Perhaps one day soon we’ll have a battery that displays no “memory” effect, one that can be completely discharged or overcharged without harm, and require no complex computerized management system. This battery could even prove so durable it will be immune to damage from vibration and not break down chemically over time. In operation, such a battery might even routinely outlast the very vehicle or machine it was designed to operate in! Last, we could complete our wish list by adding in the impossible: low materials toxicity, simple construction, and, of course, good energy density.

Does such a battery sound like too much to hope for?

Thomas Edison didn’t think so when in 1899 — working with a design pioneered by Waldemar Jungner — he patented a battery with all these characteristics.

It was Edison’s hope that electric vehicles — which currently had the lead in popularity — would easily trump internal combustion or steam to be the vehicle of choice of his time, and ours. The Edison cell had a greater energy density than popular lead acid, and recharged in half the time. Astoundingly, it was not harmed by being fully discharged (even if dead shorted for years), and overcharging occasionally was actually good for the cell. It was even recommended as a monthly exercise in the battery’s manual!

Edison advertised that the cell had a life of at least four years, but the materials proved to be so stable (due to the low solubility of the reactants in the electrolyte) that some are still producing their full capacity today after more than 50 years! Problems with the Edison cell were few, and included poor performance at low temperatures, a high self discharge rate when unused (20% to 40% per month), and a slower than normal charge and discharge rate (65%). Yet, the practical nature of these cells was undeniable, and perhaps remains so today.

Like many overlooked gems throughout the history of engineering, perhaps these “diamonds in the rough” deserve a second look and some thoughts as to how our present technology could be improved by examining the principles of their operation. Many times historically these cells have been referred to as “the battery that worked too well.” Though they were popular and profitable in niche markets for Edison, it has been said that a business model could never be created for the general public by producing a product that does not require replacement. However, these days where “going green” is more than a quaint idea, perhaps Edison’s idea has finally found its time.

CONSTRUCTING AN EXPERIMENTAL EDISON CELL

Because I know first hand the ingenuity and depth of knowledge of Nuts & Volts readers, I’d like to present the Edison cell to you in two ways. First, I’d like to briefly cover the historical construction of the cell. I think this will spark some ideas and even possible improvements to the cell. Then, I’d like to present the details of my own homemade cell experiments so you can construct one, as well.

An alkaline electrolyte proved to be not only effective but — unlike acid — the solution was protective of the metal electrodes in the battery, giving them their phenomenal lifespan. The alkaline solution was also safer than acid, being about the same toxicity as ordinary bleach. (The raw chemical potassium hydroxide is not so benign, and must be handled with care as we’ll see later in an experimental cell.)

Edison claimed that he would not begin actual manufacturing of the cells unless he achieved five times the capacity of the competing (lead acid) cell. At one point, he claimed to have reached 15 times the energy density of lead acid in a series of remarkable experiments.

Edison had found the cell’s capacity increased directly with the surface area of the plates. It’s hard not to wonder with today’s astounding capabilities in miniaturization (and nano machines) what might be possible for plate creation with such robust cells.

Tennessee legislature makes camping outside of state Capitol a felony (and moar) to quash protests

Protesters aiming to spend the night outside the Tennessee Capitol could be hit with a felony.

The state legislature voted on Wednesday to make it a felony to camp outside the state Capitol as a response to a protest-filled summer with repeated overnight demonstrations in Nashville. The legislation, which will become law immediately after Republican Gov. Bill Lee signs the bill, makes it a Class E felony to camp on state property. Those charged could face up to six years in jail and a loss of their voting rights. Some who opposed the legislation thought the punishment was too severe.

"We are using a bazooka to go after a housefly here,” said Senate Minority Leader Jeff Yarbro, a Democrat. "Are we really saying that a citizen of this state can be punished with a year in prison and have a felony record because they camped on public property? That should be a bridge too far."

The legislation also made it a misdemeanor to spit or throw bodily fluids at a law enforcement officer. The elevated punishment includes a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 days in jail if convicted. The legislation also made it a felony to trespass on property owned by elected officials to prevent protesters from targeting the homes of lawmakers. It also established a mandatory minimum sentence of 45 days in jail for aggravated rioting and made it a felony crime to block an emergency vehicle that is responding to an emergency call.

The legislation passed with a party-line vote in both the House and the Senate, with the exception of one Republican senator who voted against it. Sen. Kerry Roberts, a Republican, said he is not concerned about the legal ramifications that protesters will face if they break the new laws.

"The thing is, what I wish I could convey to people is that it's really hard to be sympathetic to what someone is saying when they are yelling at you, when they're trying to shame you, when they're calling you names and so forth," Roberts said.

Rep. Jason Hodges, a Democrat, said that he believes the legislation was only passed because the demonstrations outside the Capitol have been led by Black Lives Matter supporters. He noted that there was no discussion from Republicans to charge armed anti-lockdown protesters earlier in the year.

"We seem not to worry about protesting when white people show up with AR-15s. But when black people show up with signs, we try to pass legislation … maybe that’s why they’re out there in the first place," Hodges said.

US jobless claims below 1m for first time since March

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment has dipped below 1 million for the first time since March.

About 963,000 people sought the benefits last week, down from nearly 1.2 million the week before, the Labor Department said. The figures have been subsiding since peaking at 6.9 million in late March. But they remain extremely high, driving debate in Washington over the need for further stimulus.

The Shelby County Board held their regular monthly meeting yesterday and the public had enough of the lawlessness pushed by County Chairman Bruce Cannon. To many people's surprise, the Board adopted a $1 Million dollar in deficit budget.

Near the end of the meeting, the Chairman was requesting motions for appointments to multiple committees, however, there was nothing on the agenda for such appointments. Even after being informed it was not on the agenda and not legal, he basically told the public screw you, I am going to do what I want because that is the way we have always done it.

We want to thank those board members who stood up against the Chairman's illegal action and note every board member who voted to allow the illegal action to stand should resign. Even though the State's Attorney was present, she said nothing on this matter until asked. Initially, she attempted to justify it as OK if the action was germane to the agenda item. There was no agenda item so the issue of germane has no bearing on this matter. Rather than informing the board how to fix it correctly, which is with a motion to reconsider, she suggested they rescind the action. After we provided them the proper way to fix the illegal action they motioned to reconsider and the illegal action was corrected. The Chairman's words speak volumes! The second video covers the portion when the State's Attorney was questioned on the matter.

“After a complaint and evaluation of data on the operation and financial management of private entities operating in the field of immigration policy, audits were carried out in five Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs),” the National Transparency Authority said.

In the coming days, the activities of ten additional NGOs whose activities have been deemed of interest to the authority will be reviewed.

Pro-migration NGOs working across southern Europe have repeatedly been accused of working alongside human traffickers to realize their political objectives.

So far, the Hungarian government is this only European government which has taken decisive action to stop NGOs who aid illegal migration. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) media breathlessly applauded the selection of Kamala Harris as the Democrat Party’s vice presidential nominee, with a Global Times editorial on Thursday celebrating her for having a Chinese name and supposedly being tough on crime.

The Chinese paper also echoed Democrat talking points by suggesting criticism of Harris will be founded in racism and sexism.

The Global Times’ thoughts on racial and sexual politics would sound familiar to any consumer of left-leaning U.S. media:

Harris has been chosen based on the following considerations. First, the agenda of race is key. Since US President Donald Trump took office, the issue of race in the US has intensified greatly with wild polarization. In this case, the Democratic Party’s image as a minority representative plays an important role consolidating its campaign.

Harris is blessed with multiple characteristics of ethnic minorities. She has a Chinese name, He Jinli, which makes it easier to attract the support of Chinese voters, some of whom used to be in favor of the Republican Party because of the Democratic Party’s policies on education and other issues. Harris’ mother is from India and her father is an African American from Jamaica. Thus, she has the characteristics of major ethnic minorities. All these make her a symbol of multicultural integration in the US.

Chinese media usually tries to parrot the narratives it sees in U.S. mainstream media publications, with a dark twist that serves the CCP’s interests, such as stoking racial resentments in the U.S., or treating American social issues as if they were human rights violations on par with China’s concentration camps and Hong Kong crackdown.

Sometimes the Chinese editorialists do not understand all the nuances of what they’re parroting, which leads to amusing sentences like this one, from Thursday’s Global Times editorial: “Biden is often regarded as a moderate politician and thus is often ridiculed by his opponents. By contrast, Harris has always been known for being tough in her political career.”

The Global Times was enthused by Harris supposedly being a tough prosecutor – another claim whose nuances the CCP does not understand, given the questions raised about Harris failing to prosecute sexual abuse cases against priests and jailing minor drug offenders with an enthusiasm her party’s base finds unseemly:

When she was California’s attorney-general, Harris punished criminality ruthlessly, regardless of the suspect’s racial background. As a senator, she held a key committee position and made outstanding performances in the fight against Trump. When she competed with Biden for the Democratic Party’s presidential candidacy, she also showed an aggressive attitude. Harris’ toughness is what Biden lacks. A mild and mature man with a young and aggressive woman constitutes a perfect match.

This is the beginning of what will probably become a major Chinese narrative about the Democrat ticket: Harris is tough on crime, just like Beijing. The Chinese government often justifies its most oppressive actions as simple law enforcement, reining in hooligans, protecting state security from dangerous subversives, and so forth.

The Global Times concluded that there might be a few problems with the Harris pick, but only because white Americans are racist.

“Although Harris has minority characteristics, the question of her appeal to ‘Middle America’ and identity politics looms. Some white voters may strengthen their sense of identity as the ethnic majority and distance themselves from the Democratic Party. This means that identity politics will be more prominent in the 2020 election. In the long run, political polarization based on ethnic identity is likely to become more wide-ranging in the U.S.,” the Chinese paper predicted.

For most existing charter flights, the suspension becomes effective on Oct. 13. The order was issued on the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s birthday, one U.S. official noted.

In May, the Transportation Department imposed a cap on charter flights to Cuba at 3,600 per year. That action capped charter flights at about 2019 levels, preventing any increase. The United States last October banned regularly scheduled flights to all Cuban cities except Havana. In January, the Transportation Department barred charter to flights to any Cuban airports except Havana.

Trump has clamped down on Cuba following the historic move by Democratic predecessor Barack Obama to reopen U.S.-Cuba ties.

Sexual crimes against children in the United Kingdom are up 57 per cent over five years ago, with a shocking 449 babies sexually abused, according to figures revealed by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

If your protest calls for the deprivation of rights and liberties of others, intimidates others, harasses or threatens others, silences others, then you are an enemy of freedom no matter what the justification.
Engaging in, promoting, inciting, and/or celebrating physical violence that deliberately targets civilians is never justifiable.
