A Justice Department Inspector General's report that there had been a significant number of inaccuracies and omissions in warrant applications the FBI filed with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that allowed them to monitor former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. The report revealed that the FBI relied on unverified information contained in a dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who is leading a Senate investigation of the matter, has pointed out that the FBI used the dossier even though the FBI had interviewed Steele's sub-source, who said that the information was unreliable. Graham has openly wondered who in the bureau was aware of what the sub-source said.

“We’re not going to let the system blame some low-level intel analyst or case agent for defrauding the court,” Graham told Fox News in July. “I believe it goes to the very top, and I’m going to get to the bottom of it and that means Sally Yates and Rosenstein, and McCabe and Comey are all going to come before the committee and they’re going to be asked, ‘What did you know and when did you know it?’”

Blackstone CEO Schwarzman pockets at least $568 million in 2018: filing

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Blackstone Group LP Chief Executive Stephen Schwarzman pocketed at least $567.8 million in 2018 dividends and compensation, making him yet again the private equity industry's highest earner, a regulatory filing showed on Friday.

The was below the roughly $786 million Schwarzman, 72, took home in 2017. His net worth is pegged by Forbes at $13.2 billion.

The private equity veteran received $69.1 million in compensation from Blackstone in 2018, largely due to investment gains.

Blackstone no longer discloses the dividend payment to the class of stock Schwarzman owns, but based on the $2.15 per common unit payout, he received almost $500 million in dividends. The dividend for Schwarzman's class of stock has historically been higher than for common units.

Schwarzman last year elevated Jonathan Gray, 49, who turned Blackstone into the world's biggest real estate investor, to president and chief operating officer, setting him up as his successor as CEO.

In 2018, Gray received total compensation of $87.8 million. His bonus was $10 million, down from $25.8 million a year earlier. This is due to Gray opting to receive $30 million in stock which will vest over the course of 5-and-a-half years.

Schwarzman earned much more than other co-founders of private equity firms. Apollo Global Management LP CEO Leon Black received $252,617 in compensation and $169.7 million from dividends in 2018.

Companies and aid groups led by Bill and Melinda Gates are teaming up to test experimental drugs and collect blood plasma from Ebola survivors to help treat patients in West Africa, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. Several Ebola patients recovered from the disease after receiving blood plasma containing vital antibodies, but without a study, there’s no way of knowing for sure whether survivor blood transfusions work. That’s where the Gates family comes in.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is donating $5.7 million to the project, which starts within a month, to scale up manufacturing for treatment drugs including brincidofovir to be tested in Ebola-affected West African countries such as Guinea. North Carolina-based Chimerix Inc. developed brincidofovir for treatment of other types of diseases, but it has also been used in a few Ebola cases, and lab tests suggest the antiviral medicine might help fend off the deadly virus, according to the Associated Press.

There is currently no cure or treatment for Ebola. Those who manage to survive Ebola build up antibodies against the virus and become immune to the strain that infected them. But the medical community is unable to determine whether or not survivor blood transfusions help an Ebola patient survive. The second part of this project aims to find an answer.

Project leaders in Africa will collect blood plasma from Ebola survivors to use as “a tool for a future epidemic,” Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told the Associated Press in an interview. But that’s no simple task. Donated blood will be filtered through a bloodmobile, a machine used for removing small amounts of plasma and returning the rest of the blood to the donor. Although complex, this process allows donors to give blood as frequently as every two weeks. Three bloodmobiles, donated by another Microsoft co-founder and the Greenbaum Foundation, have been sent to Africa, where the Clinical Research Management Inc. will head the plasma study, according to the Associated Press.

Dr. Kent Brantly, an American missionary doctor who survived Ebola, recently donated blood to Dr. Rick Sacra, another doctor stricken with the disease. Brantly himself received a blood donation from a Liberian boy who survived Ebola while under Brantly’s care.

“The bottom line is that we really don’t know if it helps and to what degree it might help,” said Dr. Luciana Borio, who is leading the Food and Drug Administration’s response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. “We would love not to be in the same situation in the future,” Borio said at a press conference, according to the AP.
