Horowitz: President Trump should read Black Lives Matter the Riot Act – and the Insurrection Act

 

The hallmark of a first-world country is not that violence never occurs within its borders, but that once it does, the damage is mitigated immediately and the perpetrators are punished and future criminals deterred. Yet here we are, over 80 days into this national insurrection by terrorist groups like Back Lives Matter and Antifa, and there is no end in sight. Trump is president today, not just after November 4. It's time for him to use his inherent power to put down the insurrection.

 

The fact that crowds can celebrate about shooting a Trump supporter in cold blood, rampage through Oakland and chant "death to America," and burn down Kenosha until it looks like Beirut demonstrates that we are no longer dealing with belligerent protests or even rioting, but with deadly terrorism. Our tactics – both at the state and federal levels – must comport with this reality.

 

On the state level, the notion that somehow police must stand back and allow "protests" to fester until they get out of hand and uncontrollable is absurd. When there is clear and present danger that gatherings lead to violence, they can be dispersed. As the Supreme Court said in Cantwell v. Connecticut (1940), "When clear and present danger of riot, disorder, interference with traffic upon the public streets, or other immediate threat to public safety, peace, or order appears, the power of the State to prevent or punish is obvious." Thus, any discussion of "right to protest" is out the window, especially after an 80-day track record and trail of devastation in its wake.

 

Then there is the federal role. The notion that the Constitution and statute somehow keep the federal government neutral or removed from an organized insurrection is misguided and dangerous. From the early days of the Whiskey Rebellion through the Civil War-era insurrections, the federal government has been at the forefront of restoring peace when states are either inherently incapable or unwilling to protect civil liberties and punish violent forces, especially when they cross state lines and are national in scope.

Politico Reporter Questions Whether It’s Legal To Post Security Footage Of Pelosi At Salon Since California Is A β€˜Two-Party Consent’ State

 

After it was reported that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) broke coronavirus lockdown rules to visit a salon, Politico reporter Carla Marinucci came to the top Democrat’s defense by suggesting it might have been illegal to post security camera footage of Pelosi at the San Francisco salon.

β€œHave to ask upon seeing this: Is it legal in CA – a β€œtwo party consent” state – to videotape someone in a private home or business without their consent?” Marinucci asked while linking to a Fox News report about Pelosi’s salon visit.Attorneys quickly pointed out that it is legal to post security camera footage.

 

Had Marinucci been correct, it would have meant California businesses wouldn’t be allow to even install security cameras without posting some sort of statement suggesting that by entering the store, customers consent to be taped.

 

On Tuesday night, a San Francisco salon owner accused Pelosi of breaking the city’s coronavirus lockdown order to get a blowout. The Daily Wire’s Tim Pearce reported:

 

Security footage taken from the small business and provided to Fox News appears to confirm the salon owner’s allegation, showing the leading House Democrat with wet hair and no mask walking through the shop on Monday. Hair salons across the city were allowed to open for outdoor services only on Monday for the first time since March.

 

β€œIt was a slap in the face that she went in, you know, that she feels that she can just go and get her stuff done while no one else can go in, and I can’t work,” Erica Kious, owner of eSalon, told Fox News. β€œWe’re supposed to look up to this woman, right? … It is just disturbing.”

 

Salons in San Francisco have been able to reopen at limited capacity, but only for outdoor services. They are β€œnot supposed to blow dry hair,” according to the coronavirus guidelines, and masks are mandated inside at all times.

As Pearce reported, Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammil denied the allegations made by Kious, telling Fox News that β€œthe speaker always wears a mask and complies with local COVID requirements.”

 

Security footage showed otherwise, and Pelosi quickly admitted to breaking lockdown order, but claimed she didn’t know she had done anything wrong. The Daily Wire’s Amanda Prestigiacomo reported that Pelosi blamed the salon for her breaking lockdown orders.

 

β€œThis business offered for the Speaker to come in on Monday and told her they were allowed by the city to have one customer at a time in the business,” Hammill said. β€œThe Speaker complied with the rules as presented to her by this establishment.”

 

β€œI was like, are you kidding me right now? Do I let this happen?” Kious, the salon owner, said of message from one of the stylists concerning Pelosi’s request.

 

β€œWe have been shut down for so long, not just me, but most of the small businesses and I just can’t – it’s a feeling – a feeling of being deflated, helpless and honestly beaten down,” she added. β€œI have been fighting for six months for a business that took me 12 years to build to reopen.”

Charges Were Dropped Against Man At Portland Riot. He Later Stabbed Multiple People To Death, Police Say.

 

A man accused of stabbing two people to death in Portland in June was previously arrested during a riot in downtown Portland a week prior to the killings but the charges were dropped when progressive District Attorney Mike Schmidt reportedly decided to not pursue charges.

 

β€œCassy Leaton, 22, and Najaf β€˜Nate’ Hobbs, 39, were stabbed on June 16 near Northeast Davis Street. Police arrested Phillip Lawrence Nelson, 39, two days later,” KOIN News reported Tuesday. β€œHe faces two murder charges and is being held without bail. Just days before he allegedly killed Leaton and Hobbs, though, Nelson was taken into custody at a protest in downtown Portland. Court records show he was arrested on charges of interfering with a peace officer. Those charges were dismissed the next day.”

 

Journalist Andy Ngo noted that the charges from the β€œviolent antifa protest” were dropped because the case β€œwasn’t pursued by the DA.”

 

The report from the local CBS affiliate says that investigators believe that the two victims were murdered as part of a dispute they had with Nelson over a renting issue.

β€œLeaton and Hobbs’ roommate told police that they were originally renting the unit in a fourplex from Nelson, who claimed to be the owner of the building, according to court records,” the outlet reports. β€œWhen the three roommates found out Nelson was actually just squatting there, they changed the locks to their unit, angering Nelson, records state.”

Sheriffs in Oregon have cited the fact that so many rioters in Portland have had their criminal charges dropped as reason that they will not be sending any deputies to the city to quell the nightly violence as part of a plan put together by the state’s governor.

Oregon Democratic Governor Kate Brown said she will be asking sheriff’s deputies from Clackamas and Washington county and Gresham to help Portland Police gain control of the embattled city. β€œThe governor is convening a community forum on racial justice and police reform, which will include Black protest organizers and community leaders, as well as Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler,” KATU News reported.

On Sunday, August 30th, I read that Governor Kate Brown announced a new plan to address the lawlessness happening in Portland. I was surprised to read that the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office was part of the plan since the Governor’s Office never contacted me.

Had Governor Brown discussed her plan with my office, I would have told her it’s about changing policy not adding resources. Increasing law enforcement resources in Portland will not solve the nightly violence and now, murder. The only way to make Portland safe again, is to support a policy that holds offenders accountable for their destruction and violence. That will require the DA to charge offenders appropriately and a decision by the Multnomah County Presiding Judge not to allow offenders released on their own recognizance, and instead require bail with conditions. The same offenders are arrested night after night, only to be released by the court and not charged with a crime by the DA’s Office. The next night they are back at it, endangering the lives of law enforcement and the community all over again.

For all of us in law enforcement, keeping our community safe is our first priority. Had Governor Brown asked me, I would have told her that no amount of human resources will stop the β€œcycle of violence” (her term) that is making Portland unsafe. For that to occur, the criminal justice system will need do its part and hold offenders accountable.

Report: Hunter Biden still profiting off stake in Chinese surveillance company sanctioned for alleged involvement in Uighur persecution

 

Hunter Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, holds a stake in a Chinese surveillance company sanctioned by the U.S. for its alleged involvement in the country's systematic repression of Uighurs and other Muslim minorities, the Washington Free Beacon reported Wednesday.

 

The news raises further questions about the Biden family's controversial business dealings in China and casts doubt on Democratic nominee Joe Biden's ability to stand up to China on the world stage should he be elected president.

Bohai Harvest RST Shanghai Equity, an investment firm that Hunter Biden owns a stake in, initially invested in Megvii, a sanctioned Chinese tech company that specializes in facial recognition software, in 2017, according to the company's website. The firm holds a nearly 2 percent stake in Megvii through two holding companies, according to a prospectus filed by Megvii as part of its application for a listing on the Hong Kong stock exchange last year.

 

Megvii, known for its core product, Face++, was added to a the U.S. Commerce Department blacklist last year for "human rights violations and abuses in the implementation of China's campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, and high-technology surveillance against Uighurs, Kazakhs, and other members of Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang."

Hunter Biden's investment in the company was confirmed as part of a new bombshell documentary on BlazeTV, titled "Riding the Dragon: Uncovering the Bidens' Chinese Secrets." The documentary unveils largely unreported details about Hunter Biden's business ventures in China β€” which even benefitted the Chinese military β€” while his father, then the vice president, led U.S. policy efforts in the country.

 

The film highlights a 2019 report by journalist Lee Fang at The Intercept that details Hunter Biden's lucrative investment in the company through his private equity firm, Bohai Harvest.

Police arrested a 28-year-old woman in the Australian state of Victoria for allegedly encouraging people to participate in an anti-lockdown protest. The arrest was captured in a Facebook Live video, in which the woman can be heard telling police she is pregnant.

 

"Excuse me. What on earth?" the woman asks two Victoria Police Department officers, while one places her in handcuffs and the other explains she is being charged with incitement. The latter officer says her charge relates to a social media post where she allegedly prompted followers to attend a rally in Ballarat protesting the region's COVID-19 restrictions.

 

"I'm in my pajamas. I have an ultrasound in an hour," the woman continues. She offers to delete the social media post, but police tell her she "already committed the offense." Both the woman arrested and man recording the video, who seems to be her partner, question why the post's contents constitute a crime.

"I didn't realize I was doing anything wrong," she says. "This is ridiculous."

Victoria police confirmed the woman's arrest and incitement charge in a statement sent to Newsweek on Wednesday.

"Victoria Police is aware of a prohibited gathering which is planned for Ballarat on Saturday. Any gathering of this nature is in blatant breach of the Chief Health Officer's directions and puts Victorian lives at risk," police said in the statement. "Victoria Police has already taken action as part of an ongoing investigation into the planning and encouragement of protest activity in Ballarat."

Chicago Faces Record $1.2 Billion Budget Shortfall Following β€˜Catastrophic’ Economic Collapse, Riots, And Violence

 

Chicago’s mayor, Lori Lightfoot, announced Tuesday that the city is facing a historic $1.2 billion budget shortfall for the fiscal year 2021, following what the mayor called a β€œcatastrophic” economic collapse caused by the coronavirus pandemic and by widespread rioting and looting that did an estimated $60 million in physical damage to the city’s downtown and untold damage to its tourism industry.

β€œSaying Chicago faces β€˜a crisis unlike anything we have experienced in our lifetimes,’ Mayor Lori Lightfoot painted a grave financial picture for the city on Monday, detailing a projected $1.2 billion budget shortfall in the 2021 fiscal year,” Chicago’s public broadcasting station, WTTW reported.

 

β€œOn top of that colossal shortfall, the city’s financial picture worsened significantly during the past three months because of an β€˜economic catastrophe caused by the coronavirus pandemic,’” Lightfoot said according to the outlet. β€œThe city’s budget for the current fiscal year is now $799 million in the red, she said.”

Lightfoot added that β€œall options are on the table,” though she refused to get into specifics. In the past, the city has proposed a computer lease tax, a streaming services tax, and a higher restaurant and entertainment tax as stopgap measures for budget shortfalls. This shortfall, though, is so unprecedented, the city is likely to consider more extreme measures, like a property tax hike.

 

β€œThe reality is that life will be different for the foreseeable future, impacting how services are provided and how departments are structured, and we must adjust to meet that reality,” Lightfoot said. β€œSome painful choices will need to be made, including the likely necessity of personnel reductions.”

 

Lightfoot is also pressing for a federal bailout for Chicago and, on a larger scale, Illinois, as part of the fourth coronavirus relief package being discussed now in Congress. Democrats passed bailouts for cities and states impacted by COVID-19-related shutdowns and did not specify that the economic damage being addressed had to be the direct result of the pandemic. Republicans, however, have said there will be no bailout for cities and states β€” especially those like Chicago and Illinois, whose budget woes long predate coronavirus.

Chicago did get an estimated $470 million in federal funding from the third, bipartisan coronavirus relief bill, the CARES Act, passed back in early May.

 

The mayor is likely addressing the city’s budget woes now because information came to light, late last week, indicating that Chicago’s city government, which had pledged $10 million in grants to help address damage to private business from the two looting campaigns in June and August, doled out just over $200,000 to help city residents rebuild, per the Chicago Tribune.

 

Damages from just August’s riots and looting are estimated at around $60 million, and that’s without considering economic losses. Several major retail chains, including Macy’s, which anchors the city’s β€œMagnificent Mile” shopping district, are now considering dropping their leases and moving their flagship stores outside of the city.

 

The coronavirus pandemic, the Chicago Sun-Times reports, likely cost the city β€œin excess of $500 million.”

Alex Jones has received a secret report distributed by the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC) entitled β€œThe Modern Militia Movement” and dated February 20, 2009. A footer on the document indicates it is β€œunclassified” but β€œlaw enforcement sensitive,” in other words not for public consumption. A copy of the report was sent to Jones by an anonymous Missouri police officer.

 

The MIAC report specifically describes supporters of presidential candidates Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, and Bob Barr as β€œmilitia” influenced terrorists and instructs the Missouri police to be on the lookout for supporters displaying bumper stickers and other paraphernalia associated with the Constitutional, Campaign for Liberty, and Libertarian parties.

 

β€œMissouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC) provides a public safety partnership consisting of local, state and federal agencies, as well as the public sector and private entities that will collect, evaluate, analyze, and disseminate information and intelligence to the agencies tasked with Homeland Security responsibilities in a timely, effective, and secure manner,” explains the MIAC website. β€œMIAC is the mechanism to collect incident reports of suspicious activities to be evaluated and analyzed in an effort to identify potential trends or patterns of terrorist or criminal operations within the state of Missouri. MIAC will also function as a vehicle for two-way communication between federal, state and local law enforcement community within our region.”

 

MIAC is part of the federal β€œfusion” effort now underway around the country. β€œAs of February 2009, there were 58 fusion centers around the country. The Department has deployed 31 officers as of December 2008 and plans to have 70 professionals deployed by the end of 2009. The Department has provided more than $254 million from FY 2004-2007 to state and local governments to support the centers,” explains the Department of Homeland Security on its website. Missouri is mentioned as a participant in this federal β€œintelligence” effort.

 

Last month, the ACLU issued a news release highlighting the activity of a fusion center in Texas as the β€œlatest example of inappropriate police intelligence operations targeting political, religious and social activists for investigation,” in particular β€œMuslim civil rights organizations and anti-war protest groups.”

 

The MIAC report does not concentrate on Muslim terrorists, but rather on the so-called β€œmilitia movement” and conflates it with supporters of Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, Bob Barr, the so-called patriot movement and other political activist organizations opposed to the North American Union and the New World Order. The MIAC document is a classic guilt by association effort designed to demonize legitimate political activity that stands in opposition to the New World Order and its newly enshrined front man, Barack Obama.

 

In September of 2008, Missouri sheriffs and prosecutors organized truth squads to intimidate people opposed to Obama and threatened to arrest and prosecute anybody who ran β€œmisleading television ads.” Missouri governor Matt Blunt eventually denounced the use of β€œpolice state tactics” on the part of the Obama-Biden campaign.

United Airlines To Slash 16,370 Jobs As Air Travel Sinks

 

United Airlines joined American Airlines in the latest round of massive job cuts as the virus pandemic continues to batter the travel and tourism industry.

 

United said, in an internal memo, seen by Fox Business, that it will furlough 16,370 workers on Oct. 1. This includes 2,850 pilots, 6,920 flight attendants, and 2,010 technicians.

 

The Chicago-based carrier has over 90,000 workers and initially warned in July that 36,000 jobs were at risk of being lost as a demand crisis in air travel persisted through summer.

 

"The pandemic has drawn us in deeper and lasted longer than almost any expert predicted, and in an environment where travel demand is so depressed, United cannot continue with staffing levels that significantly exceed the schedule we fly," the company memo to employees said. "Sadly, we don't expect demand to return to anything resembling normal until there is a widely available treatment or vaccine."

 

Airlines were infused with $25 billion in stimulus in March from the federal government to keep tens of thousands of workers employed through September. With the bailout funds depleted, air travel recovery that could take a couple years, and some airlines warning that if more bailout money is not seen shortly, another round of massive layoffs could be seen. President Trump has responded to the crisis earlier this week and said his adminstration will support struggling carriers.

 

"We've got four executive actions that actually the president took, we're going to take a few others," White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said last week. "Because if Congress is not going to work, this president is going to get to work and solve some problems. So hopefully, we can help out the airlines and keep some of those employees from being furloughed."

 

In July, United's CEO Scott Kirby said air travel won't recover until there's a proven vaccine for COVID-19. With no proven vaccine insight, just optimsic headlines from Trump to pump the stock market, Kirby had to defer all new aircraft deliveries due in 2022.

 

The latest International Air Transport Association report in mid-August suggested that passenger demand might not return to 2019 levels until 2024.

California Beset With Fires and Virus Sells $2.4 Billion in Debt

 

Last September, California entered its bi-annual bond sale flush with a ratings upgrade from Fitch Ratings and a $21 billion budget surplus.

A year later, California kicks off its fall debt sales under dramatically different circumstances. Wildfires scorching thousands of acres are creating another stress on the state’s resources and its response to the coronavirus pandemic. S&P Global Ratings is warning that it may lower the Golden State if its finances become unbalanced for a long period. To close a $54 billion shortfall, California resorted to deferring payments and plumbing reserves, while holding out hope for federal aid that has yet to materialize.

 

Such long-term concerns won’t impede the state’s access to capital. But relative yields on its $2.4 billion general-obligation sale, which prices Wednesday, show investors demanding more in compensation. Ten-year bonds were being offered Tuesday to retail buyers at 1.13% yield, or 30 basis points over benchmark debt, compared with 0.94% yield, or 13 basis points over benchmark debt for California securities. So far, wildfires have burned 1.48 million acres, with three of the 20 largest blazes in California history occurring in August, according to the state’s fire service. The agency has already consumed about 80% of the amount budgeted for the year ending in June 2021 to deal with them, finance department figures show.

 

The blazes, many of them sparked by lightning from extreme weather, forced evacuations, with about 27,000 still unable to return to their homes as of Tuesday and facing the difficulty of relocating safely as the pathogen continues to spread. The far-drifting smoke is pushing air quality to dangerous levels, undermining the ability of restaurants in cities to offer outdoor dining to keep afloat during the pandemic.

 

Meanwhile, the state’s about a month away from cuts that will be triggered absent federal aid, including $6.6 billion to its schools and community colleges, under the budget lawmakers passed for the current fiscal year. So far, the three major credit rating companies have held their stable outlooks on the state, meaning a downgrade isn’t imminent. And California has sufficient cash on hand so it doesn’t need to borrow through revenue anticipation notes, unlike during past crises. But S&P has flashed a warning in a release ahead of the bond sale. For this year’s budget, the state deferred $12.9 billion in payments to schools and community colleges and borrowed $9.3 billion from other funds – obligations officials must honor, even if the economic recovery lags. They anticipate general fund revenue growing by 2% for the year beginning in July and then by more than double for the year after that, bond documents show.

Senators to Esper: Reverse Your Decision to Kill Stars and Stripes

 

A group of senators wants to reinstate funding for Stars and Stripes, the military's newspaper for service members, as the organization faces being totally defunded before the year is out.

 

The bipartisan group, led by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), on Wednesday sent a letter to Defense Secretary Mark Esper to preserve the "historically significant publication," which only requires "a tiny fraction" of the Defense Department's annual budget, according to the lawmakers.

 

"Stars and Stripes is an essential part of our nation's freedom of the press that serves the very population charged with defending that freedom," the 15 senators said in the letter. "Therefore, we respectfully request that you rescind your decision to discontinue support for Stars and Stripes and that you reinstate the funding necessary for it to continue operations."

 

The Pentagon in February proposed cutting all of the newspaper's funding roughly $15.5 million annually to reallocate those dollars toward other high-profile programs, such as space, nuclear and hypersonic systems, Esper said at the time. The Senate version of the fiscal 2021 National Defense Authorization Act does not contain funding for the paper; lawmakers will convene this fall to develop a joint version of the bill.

 

"We trimmed the support for Stars and Stripes because we need to invest that money, as we did with many, many other programs, into higher-priority issues," he said during a news conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels, following DoD's $740 billion budget submission to Congress. Stars and Stripes is published in print and online.

 

While the paper, which is distributed to U.S. troops stationed at bases worldwide, maintains editorial independence, it receives federal funding as part of the Pentagon's Defense Media Agency. About $8.7 million of the subsidy comes through operations and maintenance (O&M) funding, and about $6.9 million from contingency operations funds, Stripes said. The remainder of the Stripes annual budget comes from advertising, subscriptions and sales.

 

The senators warned that the deadline for the paper's operation to disband is fast approaching.

 

"We understand that DoD plans to cease publication of Stars and Stripes on September 30, 2020 and completely dissolve the organization by January 31, 2021 as a result of the proposed termination of funding in the fiscal year 2021 President's budget," they said. "We urge you to take steps to preserve the funding prerogatives of Congress before allowing any such disruption to take place."

 

In July, Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., a Marine veteran, introduced an amendment during the House Armed Services Committee markup that would allocated the necessary $15.5 million to keep Stars and Stripes afloat.

 

"Thousands of troops around the globe rely on them for the kind of news that just isn't covered elsewhere – stories from American bases, the latest Department of Defense news, and transparency coverage that cuts through political and military brass BS talking points," Gallego said. "It's exactly the type of honest coverage that our armed forces need, and we weren't going to let the Administration stifle these voices without a fight."

 

The lawmakers on Wednesday noted that because of language within the previous year's continuing resolution, passed to sustain funding levels, DoD also cannot legally terminate a program "until a full-year appropriations bill is enacted."

 

"It was Stars and Stripes that revealed the Defense Department's use of public relations firms that profiled reporters and steered them toward favorable coverage of the war in Afghanistan," the lawmakers said.

 

"Most recently, the paper brought to light the failure of schools on U.S. military installations to shut down during the pandemic, despite Japanese public schools doing so. These stories illustrate why Stars and Stripes is essential: they report on stories that no one else covers."

Apple and Google said Tuesday they’re expanding coronavirus warning software so that state health agencies can participate without having to create customized apps.

 

The new option, called β€œexposure notifications express,” removes one of the key barriers to adoption that led to a slow start to the software, which can warn people when they come in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with the coronavirus. So far, only six U.S. states have created apps that work with Apple and Google’s software.

 

The software, which is built into the operating systems on Google’s Android phones and Apple’s iPhones, uses Bluetooth to tell whether people have spent significant time near one another. If a participant in the exposure notification program tests positive for the coronavirus, that person’s close contacts may get a notification.

 

β€œI would say this is an improvement,” said Jeffrey Kahn, director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. Kahn, who has been studying the use of technology to fight the virus, said states have been hamstrung by indecision around which technology vendors they should use to build their apps, among other issues. Dr Theresa Tam said in a statement there is little chance of catching COVID-19 from semen or vaginal fluid, but sexual activity with new partners does increase the risk of contracting the virus, particularly if there is close contact like kissing.

 

β€œLike other activities during COVID-19 that involve physical closeness, there are some things you can do to minimize the risk of getting infected and spreading the virus,” she said.

 

Skip kissing, avoid face-to-face closeness, wear a mask that covers your mouth and nose, and monitor yourself and your partner for symptoms ahead of any sexual activity, Tam said.

 

β€œThe lowest risk sexual activity during COVID-19 involves yourself alone,” she added.

 

Sexual health is an important part of overall health, Tam said, and by taking precautions, β€œCanadians can find ways to enjoy physical intimacy while safeguarding the progress we have all made containing COVID-19.”

This is the type of story that I needed to see on my Wednesday afternoon. A radical mayor who the leftist mob of course claims is a β€œconservative” in Minnesota, arrested for breaking the law, harassing our law enforcement officers, and interfering with a traffic stop.

 

The insane mayor of Nisswa, Minnesota was arrested for obstruction and disorderly conduct, and it was all caught on video for the world to see. If leaders are doing this to disrespect our hard working men and women in blue, they deserve to be arrested. This insanity must stop!

 

The mayor of Nisswa, Minnesota, was arrested over the weekend, with his apprehension by police caught on camera and shared on the popular video app TikTok.

 

Fred Heidmann was arrested for obstruction of a peace officer and disorderly conduct, following an incident in which he seems to have confronted officers carrying out a traffic stop on a vehicle that was not his own.

 

According to a report from Pequot Lakes PD sent to BMTN, Heidmann started recording officers carrying out a traffic stop as part of the department’s work in the Toward Zero Deaths traffic safety program.

 

He then allegedly began to cross the highway towards the vehicle, with officers telling him he could record but must do so from a safe distance, at which point Heidmann allegedly β€œbecame belligerent and argued with the officers and then left the scene,” only to return a short time later β€œwith the same demeanor.”

 

Video shared by the TikTok user Mill333 – who said Heidmann β€œtried to make sure we were okay” – catches a snippet of the conversation, with Heidmann saying: β€œYou know what? And you know what? You’re not qualified to do this kind of work, you should be patrolling the streets.”

 

It’s at this point that the officer arrests Heidmann, placing an arm around his neck as Heidmann tries to move away, before putting Heidmann’s arm behind his back, and placing him face down on the hood of the car as another officer comes to help.

CNBC assured us yesterday that despite Beijing's latest attempt to stall any sale of TikTok, that Chinese conglomerate ByteDance could announce a deal with a chosen US partner by the end of Tuesday.

 

Well, here we are: The business day has ended in North America, and Asia is just waking up on Wednesday morning, and while reporters have doubled down on their assurances that a deal just might be in the offing, this latest report from the Wall Street Journal highlighting new obstacles to a TikTok sale is a pretty obvious sign that we're not going to get a deal tonight.

 

According to WSJ, which cited an anonymous source close to Beijing's thinking, the goal of China's latest attempt to obstruct the deal is simply to delay a deal, not to scuttle it completely.

 

A delay, this source reasons, would create an opportunity for the Chinese government to have a say as well as to subject it to a level of Chinese government scrutiny similar to that imposed by CFIUS, as Beijing works to bolster the narrative that the US's claims about national security threats stemming from China are brazen hypocrisies, and that Washington is the real threat to Beijing's security.

 

That Beijing is committing to this approach makes sense, considering what Peter Navarro said after warning his interviewer during an appearance on Fox Business that the US would soon expand its list of Chinese companies to target. After that, Navarro hinted that TikTok had stolen some of the AI technology it used to build its precious 'core algorithm' from Alphabet and Microsoft.

 

CFIUS has killed several deals involving Chinese companies, including the sale of Grindr, the queer-focused hookup app, to a Chinese company, for fear that it could make members of the US military vulnerable to blackmail.

With a strong bench that includes Holly Hunter, Scoot McNairy and the consistently on point Michael Kelly, The Comey Rule vividly depicts an administration lurching towards lawlessness even before Donald Trump took office and investigations into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election burgeoned.

 

Based in part on the pink slipped ex-FBI director James Comey’s memoir A Higher Loyalty, the two-parter does jump around a lot in time and political space. To that end, policy wonks and partisans may find their favorite tidbit of the far-reaching bureaucratic battle left out. I get that reaction, but I also say get over it. This is Showtime, not C-SPAN.

 

Similar to the state of the union the past several years, it has been a turbulent ride for the series written and directed by Billy Ray. At one point, The Comey Rule was pushed to the post-election scheduling graveyard. Pushback from Ray and others saw Showtime parent ViacomCBS change its mind and set the late September dates for the small-screen showdown between the Daniels-portrayed Comey and Trump.

They instilled a culture of fear and repression. Noone trusted anyone. People snitched on each other.

 

If you criticized the party or people in it.. Secret service came and took you away. Your family never saw you again.

 

They went after the churches too. Closed, repressed and underground. Clergy were persecuted and persona non gratas. They smeared christianity and drove atheism into the culture.

 

Next they rewrote the history books and gave themselves all this glory.

 

They made equal pay for every profession, regardless if you were a doctor scientist teacher or a truck driver.

 

But heres the thing. It was enough to live on, but by no means utopian bliss. Everyone was equally poor. Not equally rich…

 

Except the party leaders. they kept the money for themselves. They had beautiful vilas, resorts and they lived like kings. So the ruling class always stays rich, always stays on top.

 

Some years there were shortages of bread, rations of meat, oil and flour. Basic necessities. People lined for hours from 4 am.. Before the stores opened.

 

And yet i never saw looting… Ever. No matter how poor people got. How crushed their spirit.. They never resorted to stealing. Somehow that was the little dignity they tried to keep, when they were treated like animals. When everything was stripped from them.

 

College and docs were free, but if you got a serious illness, it would have been a death sentence.

 

Media, radio, news.. All information was carefully sencored filteted and presented ina tight narrative. We used to listed to the voice of America.. In secret..

 

So after these people killed for their Marxist dream… It turned out to be nothing but a shitfest that left a dark hole in every country it touched. Countless dead, economy destroyed, and the spirit of the people crushed. There was no hope for the future. You can still see that hopelessnes in people today.

 

Wheni go back to visit.. I can tell apart those who are from there just by one look in their eyes.

 

They have resigned themselves to the oppressors, and lost hope. To this day they carry this burden.. And they don't have God either to change and renew their spirit. Such darkness.

Facebook removes GOP lawmaker's post for inciting violence

 

Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) suggested in a Facebook post on Tuesday that armed demonstrators in his state should be met with force, leading the social media platform to remove it for breaking its policies against inciting violence.

 

In the post on his campaign account, Higgins attached a photo of Black men with guns and wrote: "One way ticket fellas. Have your affairs in order. Me?… I wouldn't even spill my beer. I'd drop any 10 of you where you stand."

 

"Nothing personal. We just eliminate the threat. We don't care what color you are. We don't care if you're left or right. If you show up like this, if We recognize threat… you won't walk away," Higgins continued.

 

Higgins further warned people "aggressively natured and armed in my presence" that "[t]hat is where your journey will end."

 

A Facebook company spokesperson confirmed to The Hill that the post from Higgins was removed "for breaking our Violence and Incitement policies."

 

Higgins also confirmed in a subsequent post that he had not removed his original message.

 

"No, I did not remove my post. America is being manipulated into a new era of government control. Your liberty is threatened from within," Higgins wrote.

 

"Welcome to the front lines, Ladies and Gentlemen. I suggest you get your mind right. I’ll advise when it’s time gear up, mount up, and roll out," he added.

 

The photo in Higgins's since-removed post was from a demonstration this summer in Louisville, Ky., where a Black militia group was protesting the death of Breonna Taylor, who was shot by police in March.

 

Higgins is a vocal gun rights advocate, and his state allows people to openly carry firearms.

 

The Facebook posts from Higgins came amid protests in Lafayette, La., over the death of Trayford Pellerin, a Black man who was killed by police on Aug. 21.

 

Roughly 40 to 50 armed members of a right-wing militia group β€” who appeared to be all or mostly white men β€” showed up at a peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstration on Tuesday night outside Lafayette City Hall, according to the Acadiana Advocate.

Prosecutors filed indictments Wednesday against 11 suspects for the alleged gang rape of a teenage girl last month, with more charges expected to be brought later against others.

 

The group of defendants charged at the Beersheba District Court includes both adults and minors.

 

Four suspects were charged with rape and the rest with other crimes including committing an indecent act, abetting a rape, conspiracy to commit a crime and failing to assist the 16-year-old alleged victim.

 

Of the four rape suspects, two are men aged 27 from the northern city of Hadera β€” named Wednesday as Issi Raphaelov and Ilizir Meirov β€” and the other two are teenage brothers from a community in the south of the country.

 

β€œThe defendants treated the plaintiff as an object, as a tool to satisfy their desires and none of the defendants tried to stop what was happening and provide any sort of help,” a statement from prosecutors said.

 

According to the indictment, Raphaelov and Meirov broke into a room at the Red Sea Hotel and brought the girl there while she was drunk, with Raphaelov claiming he was a medic and offering to help her.

Facebook removes GOP lawmaker's post for inciting violence

 

Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) suggested in a Facebook post on Tuesday that armed demonstrators in his state should be met with force, leading the social media platform to remove it for breaking its policies against inciting violence.

 

In the post on his campaign account, Higgins attached a photo of Black men with guns and wrote: "One way ticket fellas. Have your affairs in order. Me?… I wouldn't even spill my beer. I'd drop any 10 of you where you stand."

 

"Nothing personal. We just eliminate the threat. We don't care what color you are. We don't care if you're left or right. If you show up like this, if We recognize threat… you won't walk away," Higgins continued.

Four people arrested in Kenosha for curfew violations have filed a lawsuit against city and county authorities, claiming constitutional violations of free speech and equal protection rights.

 

Documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin on Aug. 28 as part of a class action lawsuit against the City of Kenosha and Kenosha County show that the plaintiffs allege violations of the First Amendment and Equal Protection rights.

 

The equal protection rights claim refers to the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which states that no state shall β€œdeny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” The clause essentially mandates that states must apply the law impartially, not based on arbitrary distinctions between citizens. The plaintiffs claim this is not the case in the law enforcement response in Kenosha, which saw an outbreak of violence amid largely peaceful protests in the wake of the Aug. 23 shooting of Jacob Blake, a suspect in a felony sexual assault who was shot while resisting arrest.

Lawmakers urge raising age of consent

National legislators and political advisers have called for lifting the age of sexual consent from the current 14 years of age to 16.

 

"Sex education is scarce in China and a lot of girls are not aware of how they should be protected at the age of 14," said Zhu Lieyu, a lawyer from Guangdong province and a deputy to the National People's Congress.

 

The age of consent is the age at which a young person can legally agree to sexual activity.

 

Age of consent laws apply to all forms of sexual activity, ranging from kissing and fondling to sexual intercourse.

 

The age of consent is 14 in China, meaning that for young people under 14, all sexual activities, no matter with or without consent, are criminal offenses.

 

Xu Juehui, another national lawmaker who also suggested raising the age of consent, said that juveniles may be physically mature at age 14 but are far from being mentally mature enough for sex, owing to insufficient sex education, especially sex-related morality and self-respect, from family, school and society.

 

"That causes some minors who have already experienced physical sexual impulses but aren't mentally ready for sex to fall victim to sexual abuse, but they cannot obtain due protection from the law," said Xu.

 

Apart from raising the age of consent from 14 to 16, Zhu further suggested adopting standards on the age of consent based on specific cases.

 

"In most cases, the age of consent should be raised to 16. But if the sexual abuser is in a relationship of trust such as the victim's teacher, the age of consent should be over 18 to better protect juveniles," he said.

 

"A 16 or 17-year-old may not consent to sexual activity if the sexual abuser is in a position of trust or authority toward them, for example their teacher or coach, because the young person is dependent on the abuser," Zhu said.

 

"In many cases, however, the defendants usually claimed that the victims aged between 14 to 18 'agreed' to have sex with them, which goes against the interests of the victims," Zhu said, adding that such cases were commonly seen when there is a relationship of trust, authority or dependency.

 

China's justice departments have strengthened efforts to crack down on sexual assaults on juveniles in recent years.

 

In 2013, the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Justice jointly released a notice, which noted that people with special responsibility to juveniles older than 14, such as their teachers, doctors or guardians, will be convicted of rape if they have sexual activity with them.

 

"In cases between a guardian and a ward, we are calling for a follow-up protection system that can help those young victims both physically and mentally after the sex offenders are punished," said Sun Xuemei, co-founder and head of the Girls Protection Foundation.

 

Huang Qi, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee and an associate professor at Shanghai International Studies University's Law School, suggested that people convicted of sexual assault should be restricted from working in certain fields after being released from prison.

 

"They should not be allowed to work in organizations, companies, or other public sectors serving juveniles. Especially for kindergartens and infant care facilities, a strict regulation that can prevent those with such criminal records from working there is definitely in need," she said.

Love reading replies on Canadian tweets, because it shows what real people think (they support Trump, Qanon, etc).

 

American tweets have so much astroturfing and paid garbage to make it look like people all dislike Trump. For example, on the Hillary Clinton tweet of Trump which said "Nuts!," where Trump discusses who controls Biden, there were so many blatantly ignorant tweets against what he was saying. A Canadian article linked on Twitter (biased against Trump) had replies with Canadians talking sense, saying Trump might know something we don't or have access to more information than the article writer, etc…
