Color me surprised. I’ve been predicting for months now that Joe Biden would bail out on the debates, due to his inability to string two sentences together without a teleprompter. But it now looks like Biden will attend the first debate tomorrow night. His team has figured out a technological workaround to help control him in public appearances and keep up the charade that Biden has most of his faculties.

 

After all the years that I worked in TV news, I’m kind of kicking myself that I didn’t spot this trick earlier. Keep in mind that Democrats are willing to do just about anything to cheat in a presidential election. This includes grade-school level cheating, such as then DNC head honcho Donna Brazile handing CNN’s debate questions to Hillary Clinton prior to the debate. But it also includes much more sophisticated, technological methods.

Think back to the first debate in 2016 between Trump and Crooked Hillary. That’s the debate where she wore the red pantsuit that she stole from Kim Jong Un’s wardrobe. Literally everyone on the right noticed the square box under Hillary’s jacket that was taped to her back, and the wires running up toward her head.

The device sparked a lot of theories about what it was, with some thinking it was some type of medical device to control Hillary’s seizures. But having worked in TV for so many years, I instantly recognized it, because I used to wear one at work every day. It was a power source and wireless receiver for Hillary’s IFB (her earpiece). After that first debate, the media went out of its way to not do any close-ups on Hillary from behind, because everyone knew she was wearing a gadget to help her cheat.

Fast forward to 2020, and here is how Joe Biden’s team plans to cheat. They’ve already tested this method out in several public appearances. Is Joe Biden using a teleprompter part of the time? National Guard Readies for Possible Unrest in Cleveland Ahead of Presidential Debate

 

 

National Guard members were seen in the streets of Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday, ready to help quell potential unrest ahead of the first presidential debate.

In addition to the Ohio National Guard, the Secret Service and the FBI will provide security throughout the debate, according to News 5 Cleveland.

 

β€œWhat May 30 taught us is that peaceful protests can go in a different direction in a short period of time,” Special Agent in Charge with the Cleveland FBI Eric Smith told the outlet.

 

During a Facebook teleconference, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said officials expected protesters to descend on the city, and Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams asked residents to alert law enforcement if they see anything suspicious.

 

β€œThere are a lot of things that we’ve learned not just from May 30 but the subsequent protests around the country that we have incorporated into our plan itself,” Williams said.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) has raised an alarm over ballot harvesting and voter fraud, filing a bill to prevent the practice. The Project Veritas video revealed a stunning exchange of cash for a voter registration form, in which a ballot harvester gives a voter $200 in β€œpocket money” and promises $800 more for the ballot later.

Strategic Aims Behind The War On Armenia

 

On Sunday Ilham Aliyev, the longtime dictator of Azerbaijan, launched a war on the Armenian held Nagorno-Karabakh area. That he dared to do this now, 27 years after a ceasefire ended a war over the area, is a sign that the larger strategic picture has changed.

 

When the Soviet Union fell apart the Nagorno-Karabakh area had a mixed population of Azerbaijani (also called Azeri) Shia Muslims and Armenian Christians. As in other former Soviet republics ethnic diversity became problematic when the new states evolved. The mixed areas were fought over and Armenia won the Nagorno-Karabakh area. There have since been several border skirmishes and small wars between the two opponents but the intensity of the fighting is now much higher than before.

 

In 2006 Yasha Levine wrote about his visit to Nagorno-Karabakh for The Exile. He described the uneven opponents:

 

In 1994 the Armenians won and forced Azerbaijan to a ceasefire. In the meantime Nagorno-Karabakh organized itself into a sovereign country [called Artsakh] with its own army, elected officials and parliament. But it still hasn’t been recognized by any country other than Armenia and is still classified as one of the β€œfrozen conflicts” in the region, along with the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia.

 

But this β€œfrozen conflict” may soon heat up, if you believe what Azerbaijan’s playboy/gambling addict/president, Ilham Aliyev, says. Not that Azerbaijanis should get too excited about another war: If Armenians are still the fighters they were ten years ago, then statistically, it’s the Azeris who’ll do most of the dying. While matched evenly in soldiers, the Azeris had double the amount of heavy artillery, armored vehicles, and tanks than the Armenians; but when it was over, the Azeri body count was three times higher then that of the Armenians. Azeri casualties stood at 17,000. The Armenians only lost 6,000. And that’s not even counting the remaining Azeri civilians the Armenians ethnically cleansed.

 

Since the strategically-important Baku-Ceyhan oil pipeline opened up, pumping Caspian Sea oil to the West via Turkey, the Azeri president has been making open threats about reclaiming Nagorno-Karabakh by force. The $10 billion in oil revenues he expects to earn per year once the pipeline is fully operational is going to his head. $10 billion might not seem that much β€” but for Azerbaijan it constitutes a 30% spike in GDP. In every single interview, Aliyev can’t even mention the pipeline project without veering onto the subject of β€œresolving” the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

 

Aliyev started spending the oil cash even before the oil started flowing and announced an immediate doubling of military spending. A little later he announced the doubling of all military salaries. Aliyev’s generals aren’t squeamish about bragging that by next year their military budget will be $1.2 billion, or about Armenia’s entire federal budget.

 

Over the next 14 years the war that Yasha Levine foresaw in 2006 did not happen. That it was launched now points to an important change. In July another border skirmish broke out for still unknown reasons. Then Turkey stepped in:

 

Following the July conflict Turkey’s involvement became much deeper than it had previously been, with unprecedentedly bellicose rhetoric coming from Ankara and repeated high-level visits between the two sides. Ankara appeared to see the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict as yet another arena in which to exercise its growing foreign policy ambitions, while appealing to a nationalist, anti-Armenian bloc in Turkey’s domestic politics.

 

Turkey’s tighter embrace, in turn, gave Baku the confidence to take a tougher line against Russia, Armenia’s closest ally in the conflict but which maintains close ties with both countries. Azerbaijan heavily publicized (still unconfirmed) reports about large Russian weapons shipments to Armenia just following the fighting, and President Ilham Aliyev personally complained to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

ASSANGE HEARING DAY SIXTEEN–Anonymous Witnesses to Detail Alleged CIA Plot to Kill Assange

 

2:30 pm EDT: Judge Vanessa Baraitser has granted anonymity to two witness from the UC Global Spanish security firm to have their testimony read in court on Thursday regarding an alleged Central Intelligence Agency plot to either kidnap or poison Julian Assange.

 

The two witnesses have already testified under protection in a Spanish court case against David Morales, founder and director of UC Global. The company was hired by the Ecuadorian government to provide security at its London embassy, where Assange lived for seven years until his arrest last year.

 

According to press reports the witnesses testimony detailed how Morales was working with β€œAmerican friends,” allegedly the CIA, to stream 24/7 video and audio from Assange’s chamber to the United States, including surveillance of Assange’s privileged conversations with his lawyers.

 

That would mean the government prosecuting Assange had eavesdropped on his defense preparations, an offense that would normally get its case thrown out of court.

 

The Spanish witnesses sought the same protection from Baraitser’s court that they enjoy in the Spanish court because of fear of retaliation from Morales. Spanish police raided his home and found loaded arms with their serial numbers filed off.

 

James Lewis QC, representing the U.S. government told the court he could not get instructions from the Department of Justice on whether to challenge the testimony on Thursday because of a β€œChinese Wall” that is supposed to be between the DOJ and other federal agencies, such as the CIA, to prevent prosecutions from being politically motivated. (It is a a wall that has holes. We’ve heard testimony in this case about that).

 

So there is the specter of damning testimony being read in Assange’s extradition case about the Central Intelligence Agency planning to kidnap or poison Assange that will go unchallenged by the U.S. The prosecution will be informed of the witnesses’ identities and has 24 hours to vet the witnesses.

 

Thursday should be the most explosive and perhaps most decisive day during this proceeding.

 

8:10 am EDT: Just before lunch break the defense said it wanted to call anonymous witnesses. Judge Vanessa Baraitser said she would determine whether to accept anonymity when the court resumes.

 

In the morning session, Maureen Baird, former warden at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Manhattan, testified that she believes Assange would be put in isolation under Special Administrative Measures (SAMs) both pre-trial in Alexander Detention Center and if Assange is convicted, in ADX Florence, Colorado.

Which Drugs Should Biden Take Pre-Debate?

 

With the first presidential debate now just hours away, President Trump continues to insist that Joe Biden take a drug test. Trump’s none-too-subtle insinuation is that the former vice president is so mentally frail that he cannot hope to match the vaulting intellect of the 45th president of the United States on the debate stage.

 

It’s a peculiar form of Trumpian baiting - something the President has probably learned from the world of Mixed Martial Arts - or perhaps the product of a guilty conscience. Trump himself famously sniffed his way through his first debate with Hillary Clinton four years ago, and there’s been plenty of speculation over the years that the President consumes medicinal substances to combat some form of attention-deficit disorder.

 

Cockburn won’t weigh in on the specifics. But if Biden were to use drugs for tonight’s performance, which ones should he take? Because make no mistake, Biden should absolutely be taking drugs prior to Tuesday’s debate.

 

Pro athletes all take performance enhancing drugs, after all, and winning a presidential election is at least as important as hitting 40 home runs or making the Pro Bowl, or something.

(a) Each candidate for nomination or election at any election shall be entitled to appoint two watchers for each election district in which such candidate is voted for.  Each political party and each political body which has nominated candidates in accordance with the provisions of this act, shall be entitled to appoint three watchers at any general, municipal or special election for each election district in which the candidates of such party or political body are to be voted for.  Such watchers shall serve without expense to the county.

 

(b) Each watcher so appointed must be a qualified registered elector of the county in which the election district for which the watcher was appointed is located.  Each watcher so appointed shall be authorized to serve in the election district for which the watcher was appointed and, when the watcher is not serving in the election district for which the watcher was appointed, in any other election district in the county in which the watcher is a qualified registered elector:  Provided, That only one watcher for each candidate at primaries, or for each party or political body at general, municipal or special elections, shall be present in the polling place at any one time from the time that the election officers meet prior to the opening of the polls under section 1208   1 until the time that the counting of votes is complete and the district register and voting check list is locked and sealed, and all watchers in the room shall remain outside the enclosed space.  It shall not be a requirement that a watcher be a resident of the election district for which the watcher is appointed.  After the close of the polls and while the ballots are being counted or voting machine canvassed, all the watchers shall be permitted to be in the polling place outside the enclosed space.  Each watcher shall be provided with a certificate from the county board of elections, stating his name and the name of the candidate, party or political body he represents.  Watchers shall be required to show their certificates when requested to do so.  Watchers allowed in the polling place under the provisions of this act, shall be permitted to keep a list of voters and shall be entitled to challenge any person making application to vote and to require proof of his qualifications, as provided by this act.  During those intervals when voters are not present in the polling place either voting or waiting to vote, the judge of elections shall permit watchers, upon request, to inspect the voting check list and either of the two numbered lists of voters maintained by the county board:  Provided, That the watcher shall not mark upon or alter these official election records.  The judge of elections shall supervise or delegate the inspection of any requested documents.

 

(c) No candidate or committee of a political party or of a political body, nor any other person or persons shall pay to any watcher compensation in excess of one hundred twenty ($120.00) dollars per diem.

 

(d) A watcher whose watcher's certificate is destroyed or lost on election day may appear before the court of common pleas under section 1206   2 and, after swearing under oath or affirmation that the watcher's certificate was destroyed or lost, may immediately receive a replacement watcher's certificate issued by the court.

Malinowski pleads down charge of driving with a suspended license, pays fine

 

U.S. Rep. Tom Malinowski was charged with driving with a suspended license last month, but on Tuesday agreed to a $150 fine for β€œfailure to provide documents,” according to his lawyer.

 

The charge against Malinowski, a freshman Democrat who represents New Jersey’s 7th District, was highlighted in a tweet late Monday by Harrison Neely, a consultant for Republican Tom Kean Jr., who’s challenging Malinowski in the November election.

 

Neely posted an 11-second clip of police body camera footage of the Aug. 1 traffic stop in Hopewell, Mercer County. He said he obtained the footage through a records request.

 

β€œYou were doing 65 miles an hour. It’s a 45 mile-an-hour zone,” the officer tells Malinowski.

 

β€œGoing along with the traffic, I guess,” Malinowski says.

 

β€œThere was nobody in front of you or behind you,” the officer says.

 

Malinowski’s attorney, Scott Salmon, said the congressman was cited for β€œdelaying traffic” in Raritan in December and thought he had paid the ticket, but did not.

 

Salmon said Malinowski’s license was automatically suspended when he did not pay or show up in court. He believes Malinowski didn’t receive a letter about the notification of suspension because he was in the process of moving.

 

Salmon said that shortly after the Aug. 1 traffic stop, Malinowski paid the original fine. A prosecutor on Tuesday agreed to reduce the suspended license charge to failure to provide documents β€” a $150 fine.

 

The incident was picked up by the Congressional Leadership Fund, a Republican super PAC that in a mass email Tuesday said Malinowski β€œtried to shift the blame from himself on others, which is much like how he acts in DC.”

 

Salmon, who specializes in election law, said Republicans are β€œdesperate to go after [Malinowski] for anything, real or imaginary.”

 

β€œIt’s something normal that happens to people. He fixed the problem and the process worked out the way it would work out for anyone," Salmon said. β€œJust because he’s a congressman he wasn’t treated any differently.”

Attorney General Avichai Mendelblit said he may determine that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been indicted for bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three criminal cases, is legally obligated to step aside as premier.

 

"There is the indicted Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu and there is the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, it is not the same thing," he said in a taped interview obtained by Channel 12 News. "If you mix things up and use your governmental power as prime minister, to influence you criminally, then it begins to be a serious problem. How do we deal with this problem? So if it really is impossible to deal with it, it could be that we will roll into incapacitation."

 

Mendelblit said these things in an interview with the newspaper "Mishpacha," a recording of which was aired on Channel 12 News on Tuesday.

 

Last week Haaretz reported that for two days, members of Israel's coronavirus cabinet butted heads over plans for a tighter lockdown amid the spike in COVID-19 cases.

 

Apart from the plan approved by the cabinet that allowed group worship and shut down many places of employment, some ministers said they had the impression that Netanyahu was primarily determined to stop the wave of demonstrations against him.

The CIA in 2016 asked the FBI to investigate whether the Clinton campaign had approved a plan to distract from Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s email troubles by β€œstirring up a scandal” claiming Russian interference, according to new information declassified Tuesday.

 

Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, in a letter to Congress, said the referral went to then-FBI Director James Comey and Deputy Assistant Director of Counterintelligence Peter Strzok.

 

The referral was based on information American intelligence gleaned from Russian intelligence alleging that Mrs. Clinton β€œhad approved a campaign plan to stir up a scandal against U.S. Presidential candidate Donald Trump by tying him to Putin and the Russians’ hacking of the Democratic National Committee.”

 

The intelligence community did not take a position on the accuracy of the claims about Mrs. Clinton, but Mr. Ratcliffe said former CIA Director John Brennan briefed President Obama on the claims in late July 2016.

 

According to Mr. Brennan’s handwritten notes, Mr. Ratcliffe said, the former director talked about the β€œalleged approval by Hillary Clinton on July 26, 2016 of a proposal from one of her foreign policy advisors to vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by Russian security services.”

 

Democrats’ presidential convention was taking place in Philadelphia, with the party riven by revelations from the hack of the DNC’s emails showing how much officials had put their thumb on the scale in favoring Mrs. Clinton over chief rival Sen. Bernard Sanders.

 

Mr. Comey is slated to testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, and Chairman Lindsey Graham said the fired FBI chief will have to answer questions about the revelation.

This is the same group that has announced they β€œsuspect” the prosecutors of criminal conduct in their prosecution of their master Keith Alan Raniere. They have presented prosecutors with what they call an β€œaffidavit” (it’s really a questionnaire) requiring them to swear that they did not commit prosecutorial misconduct, tamper with evidence or intimidate witnesses – and have demanded the prosecutors individually fill these documents out and return them by Wednesday.

The prosecutors are not under any legal obligation to comply with the request.

This appearance by the Nxivm-5 is part of the campaign to excite public interest in their movement to β€œexpose” the alleged malicious prosecution of Raniere and to make arguments that he is innocent.

  1. 18 U.S.C. Β§ 371β€”CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD THE UNITED STATES

 

The general conspiracy statute, 18 U.S.C. Β§ 371, creates an offense "[i]f two or more persons conspire either to commit any offense against the United States, or to defraud the United States, or any agency thereof in any manner or for any purpose. (emphasis added). See Project, Tenth Annual Survey of White Collar Crime, 32 Am. Crim. L. Rev. 137, 379-406 (1995)(generally discussing Β§ 371).

 

The operative language is the so-called "defraud clause," that prohibits conspiracies to defraud the United States. This clause creates a separate offense from the "offense clause" in Section 371. Both offenses require the traditional elements of Section 371 conspiracy, including an illegal agreement, criminal intent, and proof of an overt act.

 

Although this language is very broad, cases rely heavily on the definition of "defraud" provided by the Supreme Court in two early cases, Hass v. Henkel, 216 U.S. 462 (1910), and Hammerschmidt v. United States, 265 U.S. 182 (1924). In Hass the Court stated:

 

The statute is broad enough in its terms to include any conspiracy for the purpose of impairing, obstructing or defeating the lawful function of any department of government . . . (A)ny conspiracy which is calculated to obstruct or impair its efficiency and destroy the value of its operation and reports as fair, impartial and reasonably accurate, would be to defraud the United States by depriving it of its lawful right and duty of promulgating or diffusing the information so officially acquired in the way and at the time required by law or departmental regulation.

Hass, 216 U.S. at 479-480. In Hammerschmidt, Chief Justice Taft, defined "defraud" as follows:

 

To conspire to defraud the United States means primarily to cheat the Government out of property or money, but it also means to interfere with or obstruct one of its lawful governmental functions by deceit, craft or trickery, or at least by means that are dishonest. It is not necessary that the Government shall be subjected to property or pecuniary loss by the fraud, but only that its legitimate official action and purpose shall be defeated by misrepresentation, chicane or the overreaching of those charged with carrying out the governmental intention.

Hammerschmidt, 265 U.S. at 188.

 

The general purpose of this part of the statute is to protect governmental functions from frustration and distortion through deceptive practices. Section 371 reaches "any conspiracy for the purpose of impairing, obstructing or defeating the lawful function of any department of Government." Tanner v. United States, 483 U.S. 107, 128 (1987); see Dennis v. United States, 384 U.S. 855 (1966). The "defraud part of section 371 criminalizes any willful impairment of a legitimate function of government, whether or not the improper acts or objective are criminal under another statute." United States v. Tuohey, 867 F.2d 534, 537 (9th Cir. 1989).

 

The word "defraud" in Section 371 not only reaches financial or property loss through use of a scheme or artifice to defraud but also is designed and intended to protect the integrity of the United States and its agencies, programs and policies. Thus, proof that the United States has been defrauded under this statute does not require any showing of monetary or proprietary loss. United States v. Thus, if the defendant and others have engaged in dishonest practices in connection with a program administered by an agency of the Government, it constitutes a fraud on the United States under Section 371. United States v. Gallup, 812 F.2d 1271, 1276 (10th Cir. 1987); Conover, 772 F.2d at 771. In United States v. Hopkins, 916 F.2d 207 (5th Cir. 1990), the defendants' actions in disguising contributions were designed to evade the Federal Election Commission's reporting requirements and constituted fraud on the agency under Section 371.

The intent required for a conspiracy to defraud the government is that the defendant possessed the intent (a) to defraud, (b) to make false statements or representations to the government or its agencies in order to obtain property of the government, or that the defendant performed acts or made statements that he/she knew to be false, fraudulent or deceitful to a government agency, which disrupted the functions of the agency or of the government. It is sufficient for the government to prove that the defendant knew the statements were false or fraudulent when made. The government is not required to prove the statements ultimately resulted in any actual loss to the government of any property or funds, only that the defendant's activities impeded or interfered with legitimate governmental functions. See United States v. Puerto, 730 F.2d 627 (11th Cir.), cert. denied, 469 U.S. 847 (1984); United States v. Tuohey, 867 F.2d 534 (9th Cir. 1989); United States v. Sprecher, 783 F. Supp. 133, 156 (S.D.N.Y. 1992)(þit is sufficient that the defendant engaged in acts that interfered with or obstructed a lawful governmental function by deceit, craft, trickery or by means that were dishonest"), modified on other grounds, 988 F.2d 318 (2d Cir. 1993).

 

In United States v. Madeoy, 912 F.2d 1486 (D.C. Cir. 1990), cert. denied, 498 U.S. 1105 (1991), the defendants were convicted of conspiracy to defraud the government and other offenses in connection with a scheme to fraudulently obtain loan commitments from the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) or Veterans Administration (VA). The court held that the district court had properly instructed the jury that:

 

the Government must prove beyond a reasonable doubt the existence of a scheme or artifice to defraud, with the objective either of defrauding the FHA or the VA of their lawful right to conduct their business and affairs free from deceit, fraud or misrepresentation, or of obtaining money and property from the FHA by means of false and fraudulent representations and promises which the defendant knew to be false.

Madeoy, 912 F.2d at 1492.

 

Prosecutors considering charges under the defraud prong of Section 371, and the offense prong of Section 371 should be aware of United States v. Minarik, 875 F.2d 1186 (6th Cir. 1989) holding limited, 985 F.2d 962 (1993), and related cases. See United States v. Arch Trading Company, 987 F.2d 1087 (4th Cir. 1993). In Minarik, the prosecution was found to have "used the defraud clause in a way that created great confusion about the conduct claimed to be illegal," and the conviction was reversed. 875 F.2d at 1196. After Minarik, defendants have frequently challenged indictments charging violations of both clauses, although many United States Courts of Appeals have found it permissible to invoke both clauses of Section 371. Arch Trading Company, 987 F.2d at 1092 (collecting cases); see also United States v. Licciardi, 30 F.3d 1127, 1132-33 (9th Cir. 1994)(even though the defendant may have impaired a government agency's functions, as part of a scheme to defraud another party, the government offered no evidence that the defendant intended to defraud the United States and a conspiracy to violate an agency regulatory scheme could not lie on such facts).

 

In summary, those activities which courts have held defraud the United States under 18 U.S.C. Β§ 371 affect the government in at least one of three ways:

They interfere or obstruct legitimate Government activity; or

They make wrongful use of a governmental instrumentality.

Michael Daniel confirmed Wednesday that former national security adviser Susan Rice ordered him and his staff to "stand down" in 2016 in regard to Russian attempts to meddle in the 2016 election.

The U.S. Army Reserve will activate its first-ever field feeding company Oct. 16, 2020, with one year to become fully integrated. The activation signifies yet another push of moving culinary specialists (92G) from dining facilities to a more battlefield oriented environment.

 

A handful of carefully selected Army Reserve Soldiers were chosen to establish the 375th Field Feeding Company (FFC), in Wilson, N.C. With proximity to Virginia, culinary specialists will now have an excellent opportunity to participate in culinary competitions, which take place at Ft. Lee, Va.

 

The unit will begin accepting Soldiers on Oct. 16. With more than 500 required Soldiers, approximately 90% will be culinary specialists (92G).

 

β€œThe purpose of a field feeding company is to support units in the field, garrison and overseas environments. For the Army Reserve, it serves the purpose of providing unit support during their annual training, battle assemblies and overseas deployments,” mentioned Capt. Elizabeth Mamay, company commander, 375th FFC.

 

β€œNext year, when we are up and running and mission capable, we will be a battalion-size element at a company level; and even though it’s a field feeding company, support elements will be vital to support the mission successfully,” she added.

 

The 375th FFC will also be accepting the following military occupational specialties: chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear specialist (74D), wheeled vehicle mechanic (91B), utilities equipment repairer (91C), tactical power generation specialist (91D), quartermaster and chemical equipment repairer (91J), and unit supply specialist (92Y).

 

β€œThe field feeding company idea came about when Soldiers in the U.S. Central Command theater of operation were observed eating Meals, Ready-to-Eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner due to not having dining facilities in smaller locations,” stated Ms. Teresa Withrow, force management officer, 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary).

 

β€œWith contract feeding and dining facilities overseas, culinary specialists often experience the inability to deploy. When I first detoxed from alcohol I became functionally illiterate -- able to recognize individual words but unable to connect them to each other. "War declared!" would take several readings before I could establish what had been "declared" or what had happened to the war. (First Gulf war.) While focused on the word "war", I did not know if it had been begun or ended. The two words in a two-word sentence, were unrelated to each other. I couldn't remember the first word long enough to connect it to the second ... although I had previously been able to read 800+ wpm with 98%+ comprehension and retention.

I could speak to my sons (still in training pants) on their terms, but not other adults on their level. Writing, beyond making a signature or plugging in my employee number on a timeslip, was just out of the question.

I had dealt with life through the lens of alcohol so long I had lost the ability to deal with it sober.

I have sympathy for what Biden might be going through ... but he's no more fit to be president than I was. My disability went away as I re-learned to face the world, one word at a time, sober. His disability is only going to get worse. Must be hell knowing what lies ahead, being shut away from the world a little at a time -- one long "senior moment" after another until finally NOTHING makes sense any more and you are helpless against it. Joe Biden has my sympathy ... but Donald Trump will get my vote.
