"Lawmakers representing three western Maryland counties sent two letters last week asking West Virginia officials to β€œconsider” adding their counties to the state. The first letter, for Garrett and Allegany counties, was sent and signed by Sen. George Edwards and Dels. Wendell Beitzel, Jason Buckel and Mike McKay. There are many similar definitions of what a map is. This is just one of those, "A description of the earth, or some particular part thereof, projected upon a plain superficies; describing the form of countries, rivers, situation of cities, hills, woods, and other remarks." Single maps are often included within a bundle of maps comprising a geographical atlas.

 

We are going to look at some very old maps. The general opinion of today's scientists is that cartographers of the past were some sort of practical jokers. Here is what National Geographic says, "Inventing cities, mountains, and monsters to fill the empty spaces on maps is a centuries-old tradition in cartography." This is very similar to how the appearance of the old maps was explained to me, when I went to school.

 

I believe at the time of their creation, those maps were nothing but a useful tool upon which the lives of seafarers (and other navigators) depended. Saying obvious things is ridiculous, but maps were always used for navigation prior to the emergence of GPS. Under certain circumstances they are being used nowadays. And for that, they have to be as accurate as possible. Accuracy does not include making up lands, rivers, cities and other objects.

 

This is preposterous to think that cartographers, and map makers of the past would willingly place any false information on a map.

First of all, it would not take long for one of those seafarers sent (in a flimsy wooden ship) to explore some fantasy world created by a malicious cartographer to come back. I could only imagine what a captain of some ship, who spent a couple of years at sea, would do to such a cartographer. It's not hard to understand that false maps could spell death under certain circumstances.

And secondly, it is simply bad for business. Who would buy your maps, if they cannot be used for their only purpose?

How long would you use a GPS which is 50 miles off, or simply displays non-existent roads? In reality, this is what happens to some people when their navigation system provides as much as inaccurate information.

 

Yet, we are being spoon fed this non-sense about creative fantasy of the cartographers of the past. At the same time, when you look at the 16th, 17th, 18th century maps, you can't help it but notice, that continents looked very different. And our traditional scientists limited by their dogmatic teachings found an explanation. In their opinion, the smartest minds of the past were faking the world geography. My opinion is insignificant, but I disagree.

Please notice obvious visual attributes shared by the suggested groups. It also appears there was enough time to notice a map discrepancy. By noon on Friday, NASDAQ had paused trading 13 times in Digital World Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company, on the news that it intended to merge with Donald Trump’s planned social media startup, Truth Social, and take it public.

 

That massive interest in the Trump SPAC also created a flurry of trades of a penny stock with ties to the Trump re-election campaign, Phunware. The day of the announcement, nearly 106 million Phunware shares exchanged hands, up from little more than 3 million the day prior, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Phunware’s market cap, which was valued at $116 million at market close on Thursday, soared to $1.5 billion at one point on Friday, when shares peaked at $19.39 per share. They have since fallen to around $10 by early afternoon.

 

There doesn’t seem to be any particular reason that Phunware shares have soared alongside Digital World, apart from the company's role in Trump's re-election campaign: Phunware was responsible for building the app Trump used to communicate with and track 2.8 million of his supporters. There have been no announcements of a partnership and a Phunware spokesperson did not respond to an immediate request for comment. Phunware announced it would acquire computer systems provider Lyte Technology the morning of Oct. 19, but the stock didn't budge that day.

 

The company itself typically trades around $1 or $2 since 2019, and has a financially wrought past, including having to pay Uber $4.5 million over allegedly fraudulent advertising claims. It has reportedly struggled to maintain employees, investors, and clients, according to the Associated Press.

 

But now volatility in Phunware shares is off the chartsβ€”enough to trigger Nasdaq to halt trading in the penny stock eight times before noon of Friday. All of these halts were due to what’s called a β€œLULD pause,” which is a five-minute trading pause that goes into effect if the price of an equity moves too far up or down above its average reference price from the preceding five minutes. The pause is part of a Nasdaq rule that is meant β€œto address extraordinary market volatility in U.S. equity markets.”

 

Of course, investments in Digital World Acquisition appear to be quite speculative as well at this point, as the company hasn't yet release any kind of formal financial figures or information. Truth Social launched in beta this week and has already suffered from hacking attempts. It is unclear whether the company’s purported $1.7 billion valuation from its press release was determined by an outside investor, or the company itself, writes Fortune’s Lucinda Shen. Digital World has surpassed that valuation on the public exchangeβ€”reaching a $3.2 billion market cap on Friday.

 

The Securities Exchange Commission would still need to approve the merger once Digital World files the appropriate disclosures, as would shareholders. Securing enough votes has been difficult for some companies that achieved meme-like stock status in the past.

 

But as for now, shares of Digital Worldβ€”and penny stock Phunwareβ€”are exchanging hands fast, with spurts of 5-minute trading halts as they soar.

A 'monster' coming this weekend: Bomb cyclone, atmospheric river to blast western US

 

A series of potent storms is poised to deliver torrents of rain and feet of snow across the West over the next few days, including one on Sunday that's being called a "bomb cyclone" because of its ferocity.

"The pattern unfolding this week to next week may be one of the biggest series of storms for the rainy season for California, but there is still potential for a couple of bigger storms over the winter," AccuWeather forecaster Paul Pastelok said.
