<LOST HISTORY of FLAT EARTH Series 2: Episode 1

I’m at a bit of a crossroads with these videos. I started making them to help people around me piece things together and wake up. That motivation is now over for obvious reasons and this video is the last of this style. I contemplated for a long time giving it the title of “LHFE-Intermission” but as it foreshadows many themes and strands of volume 2 it seems appropriate to call it 2:1.

I will finish the rest of LHFE for myself and as a small contribution to the community that has served us all for so long now. More will come, sometimes just one episode and other times a cluster of them. Vol2 is all planned and written but I am slow and my motivation now falls with telling the story and sharing my discoveries so I want to make it just right. That urgency I felt when making WOEH is no longe me. But it’s also very exciting to have finally “caught up” with these videos and now be able to share the new stuff that I have been documenting for a long time now.

I can’t promise this channel will stay, it likely wont. It turns out I get a lot more done without having a channel as distraction. But I will always find a way for new content to be accessible. The bill passed the House 228-206, with 13 Republicans siding with 215 Democrats in voting ‘yes’. Six progressive Democrats – Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib – opposed the legislation.

Biden was reportedly actively involved in drumming up votes for the bill. The president canceled his planned trip to Delaware to stay in Washington and personally phoned into the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) meeting on Friday evening, asking its members to support the infrastructure package.

Several hours before the vote took place, CNN’s chief congressional correspondent, Manu Raju, reported that around 20 progressives were still against the bill. The group, led by Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Washington), previously said that they could not support the bill without addressing their education, healthcare, and climate change proposals as well. Later in the night Jayapal, however, voted ‘yes’ on the infrastructure bill. “Tonight we have an agreement that will get both bills done,” she said before the vote, referring to Biden’s assurances that his ‘Build Back Better’ spending package would be passed within the next few weeks.

While Democrats were able to secure GOP support for the infrastructure bill, Republicans remain opposed to the ‘Build Back Better’ plan, which will have to pass with Democrat votes only.

The roughly $1 trillion infrastructure bill was negotiated in June by a coalition of Democrats and Republicans in the Senate, but Biden immediately said he would only sign it if the Democrat-only BBB arrived at his desk. This set up a clash between the Democrats’ moderate and progressive factions, while Republicans became reluctant to back any of Biden’s proposals.

While Biden has remained publicly committed to the BBB, it has already had to be scaled back from a $3.5 trillion expansion of social services to about half that, and it is still being worked out in the House. The Democrats hope to pass it in the Senate through a procedure known as reconciliation, which would require no Republican votes.

Among the several attempts to put together what archaeology and the written sources of indigenous tradition can tell us about the god Quetzalcoatl, Burr C. Brundage’s newest book stands out for its unexpected approach, imagination, and some fresh insights—“aimed at the reader of literature as well as the scholar” (p. xv). Resurrecting the title of a manuscript by the Mexican Baroque savant Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, The Phoenix of the Western World, the author anticipates somehow the character of his “contemplation of Aztec religion” (p. 3). His first idea was “to present only the god Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, to the reader.” As “Quetzalcoatl kept vanishing into the images of the other gods, and those gods into others …” (p. 9), however, the idea of shifting “from research on a single god to that on a religion …” was born and accepted in the author’s mind.

According to Brundage, Quetzalcoatl is the key figure of a “sky religion.” Three other “religions” developed also in Mesoamerica: those of “fire” (with Xiuhteuctli as the central deity), of “earth” (with the Goddess of the Earth and Tlaloc), and of Tezcatlipoca (a religion “completely indifferent to nature”). After introducing this highly speculative hypothesis, Brundage confesses that “we do not know how deep down in Mesoamerican time are buried the roots of the sky religion, nor for that matter do we know how old are the other three” (pp. 10-11).

Quoting from the myths, legends, and other testimonies, Brundage establishes a great variety of associations, some of them rather speculative, to elucidate the nature of Quetzalcoatl, the “polymorphous god. ” Taking as a point of departure a clarification of the meanings of the “sky dragons,” he comes to discover “the centrality of Quetzalcoatl” (p. 69). Then he goes on to consider the multiple roles played by the god, describing his polymorphic presences, loosely referring to them as “avatars.” Quetzalcoatl appears as a demiurge, culture hero, ancestor, priest, god of warriors (!); he establishes a cosmic order; he has to do with the underworld and also with Tezcatlipoca, the god of one of “the other three religions.”

The specifically celestial nature of Quetzalcoatl (he is the god of the “sky religion”) is derived from his ultimate origins; he replaced and supplemented the ancient sky dragon. And as “sky was more changeable, more permeable than earth” (p. 290), so “the Phoenix of the Western World” made up for all sorts of “avatars” and possible forms of acting.

Space limitations prevent me from entering into a closer evaluation of this book, one more in the series of those conceived to know more about Quetzalcoatl. I consider it fair to repeat that this is an unexpected contribution, at times speculative, “an extended essay,” indeed, a reflection of the author’s excitement “in the act of acquiring knowledge” (p. xv).
