Institute for Research in Biomedicine study links palm oil to increased cancer risk

New studies have discovered how a fatty acid found in everyday pantry items can increase the likelihood of cancer.

New studies have discovered how a fatty acid found in palm oil affects the cancer genome, increasing the likelihood the disease will spread in human beings.

The spread of cancer, known as metastasis, is the main cause of death in patients with the disease. Researchers in the field say the vast majority of people with metastatic cancer can only be treated, but not cured.

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) in Barcelona conducted a study on mice, finding that palmitic acid promoted metastasis in mouth and skin cancers.

Scientists suggest this process could be targeted with drugs or carefully designed eating plans in the future, but the team behind the work has put out a warning for patients putting themselves on diets in the absence of clinical trials.

According to the research, other fatty acids called oleic acid and linoleic acid found in foods such as olive oil and flaxseeds did not show the same effect.

“There is something very special about palmitic acid that makes it an extremely potent promoter of metastasis,” Professor Salvador Aznar-Benitah said via The Guardian.

The research found that when palmitic acid was supplemented into the diet of mice, it not only contributed to metastasis but also exerted long-term effects on the genome.

However, the professor also claimed it was too early to tell what diet should be taken for patients with metastatic cancers.

“I think it is too early to determine which type of diet could be consumed by patients with metastatic cancer that would slow down the metastatic process,” he said.

“That is a much more realistic approach in terms of a real therapy, that doesn’t depend on whether a patient likes Nutella or pizza. Playing with diets is so complicated.”

Prof Greg Hannon, director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, praised the “rigorous and comprehensive” study into one of the most commonly used oils around the world.

“This is a rigorous and comprehensive study that suggests that exposure to a major constituent of palm oil durably changes the behaviour of cancer cells, making them more prone to progress from local to potentially lethal metastatic disease,” he said.

“Given the prevalence of palm oil as an ingredient in processed foods, this study provides strong motivation for further study on how dietary choices influence the risk of tumour progression.”

Johnson & Johnson to Split Into Two Companies, Shares Rally

Johnson & Johnson has announced plans to split into two companies, spinning off its consumer health division—which sells products like Band-Aids, Baby Powder, and Listerine—into a separate publicly traded company.

The consumer health business has been provisionally dubbed the New Consumer Health Company, according to a Nov. 12 statement, while the new Johnson & Johnson company will focus on the medical devices and pharmaceuticals business, which sells its COVID-19 vaccine and other drugs.

“The planned separation would create two global leaders that are better positioned to deliver improved health outcomes for patients and consumers through innovation, pursue more targeted business strategies and accelerate growth,” the company said.

The New Consumer Health Company will have in its portfolio four $1 billion megabrands and 20 brands worth over $150 million, including such household names as Neutrogena, Aveeno, Tylenol, Listerine, and Band-Aid, the company said.

For the full year 2021, Johnson & Johnson’s consumer health arm is expected to generate around $15 billion in sales, while the pharmaceutical and medical devices division is projected to bring in some $77 billion in revenues.

While details remain sparse, Johnson & Johnson expects the split to take place at some point in the next two years.

Alex Gorsky, Chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, said that spinning off the consumer health business “is the best way to accelerate our efforts to serve patients, consumers, and healthcare professionals, create opportunities for our talented global team, drive profitable growth, and—most importantly—improve healthcare outcomes for people around the world.”

Gorsky will transition into the role of Executive Chairman of the new Johnson & Johnson company following the separation, with Joaquin Duato, currently Vic Chairman of the company’s Executive Committee, will take the helm as CEO, effective Jan. 3, 2022.

“We believe that the new Johnson & Johnson and the New Consumer Health Company would each be able to more effectively allocate resources to deliver for patients and consumers, drive growth and unlock significant value,” Duato said in a statement.

The new consumer health company’s board of directors and executive leadership would be announced at a later time, Johnson & Johnson said.

Shares of Johnson & Johnson rose nearly 4 percent in premarket trading Friday following the announcement.

The move by Johnson & Johnson, which is the world’s biggest health-products company, comes in the wake of similar announcements this week by industrial conglomerates Toshiba and General Electric and underscores how big, diversified corporations are under pressure to simplify their operations.

General Electric recently announced it is splitting into three public companies that will concentrate on aviation, healthcare, and energy.

Chinese Communist Party seeks to normalize black market organ trade with public price model

A number of provinces and cities in China have released official guideline prices for vital human organs including livers, kidneys, and hearts.

The guideline release follows a July notice from the central government pertaining to financial fees and management around organ transplants.

Medical experts who study China's organ transplant market believe the idea behind creating pricing guidelines stems from the CCP's desire to normalize the country's opaque organ transplant practices.

According to reporting by the Epoch Times, the Henan Province in Central China's Yellow River Valley, created a list of organ prices that included livers going for roughly $41,000, hearts priced at $15,600, kidneys for $25,000, and corneas for $1,600.

Dr. Wayne Shih-wei Huang, a surgeon and director at Asia's largest training center for minimally invasive surgery, says the CCP is asking local governments to present (what it says are donated) organ prices based on resource consumption, technology, labor value, and public acceptability.

But prices listed make no sense in terms of the actual medical cost of transport and procedure. Instead, he believes the prices are a reflection of market value and demand. The price, for instance, of obtaining a heart should be higher than that of a kidney.

NYPD cops blast BLM leader as a 'domestic terrorist' for threats of 'riots' and 'bloodshed,' want FBI to investigate him and his funders

New York City-based Black Lives Matter leader Hawk Newsome got a lot of press this week after he vowed "riots," "fire," and "bloodshed" in Gotham if Mayor-elect Eric Adams does not meet his and his organization's demands.

Not surprisingly, New York City's finest were incensed by his remarks. And now some cops are calling on the feds to investigate Newsome as a "domestic terrorist" as well as his funders, the New York Post reported Thursday night.

What happened?

Newsome, whom the Post has described as a "rogue militant," met with Adams this week to discuss BLM's demands, especially their opposition to Adams' plan to bring back the NYPD Anti-Crime Unit.

When Adams refused to back down on his plans and instead called on Newsome and BLM to do their part to reduce crime and violence, the BLM boss threatened anarchy.

"If they think they are going back to the old ways of policing, then we're going to take to the streets again," Newsome declared, adding, "There will be riots. There will be fire, and there will be bloodshed. There's no way we're going to let some Gestapos come in here and harm our people."

He later added, "We have people in the streets who can create problems for this administration by shutting it down."

In an Instagram post responding to reports about his threats following the meeting with Adams, Newsome continued his tirade against what he called "an Evil and violent system" and vowed to fight "devious and cutthroat" politicians.

"There are plenty of us here to fight for y'all. I am here to fight for y'all," he stated, adding, "When the time comes and our people are tired they will rise up."

How did the cops respond?

NYPD cops ripped the BLM leader for his threats.

One police supervisor told the Post that Newsome "should be denounced by every politician because he is threatening to harm the citizens of New York."

The NYPD official also wants the feds to get involved.

"The FBI should investigate him as a domestic terrorist and look into where he is getting his money," the source told the Post. "The people funding him should also be investigated."

"He is threatening to overthrow the government, cause physical harm and property damage," the official added.

Another veteran cop told the Post that Newsome has created a "lose-lose situation" for BLM.

"If the mayor likes the cops, the cops will work for the mayor," the cop told the paper. "People in these communities where shootings and other crimes are spiking want the cops on the street."

Luxembourg Opens Criminal Case Into Lebanon’s Central Bank Governor

Luxembourg’s judicial authorities have joined Switzerland and France to become the third known European country to open a criminal case into Lebanon’s Central Bank Governor Riad Salame and his assets, a spokesperson has confirmed to OCCRP.

OCCRP and its Lebanese media partner, Daraj, last year uncovered a vast network of offshore companies tied to Salame, his family members and associates, including four registered in Luxembourg.

The first of two investigations into the governor, published last August, uncovered Salame’s ownership of three companies in Luxembourg which owned nearly US$100 million in overseas assets.

Salame claimed that the source of his funds comes from his successful commercial banking career and inheritances, prior to working at the central bank.

Company accounts suggest tens of millions of euros in financing for the investments was sometimes secured without collateral. A fourth Luxembourg company owned by the governor’s brother loaned 17.2 million euros ($18.8 million) to a French property investment vehicle which acquired luxury real estate in Paris.

The second investigation, published in December, found that a company tied to Salame bought a stake in his son’s wealth management company, then sold it to a major Lebanese bank that he regulates.

Lebanon’s embattled central bank governor has continued to invest in valuable overseas properties during his country’s two-year economic meltdown that has plunged 74 percent of Lebanese into poverty, according to a recent U.N. analysis.

Fulwood Invest S.a.r.l., a Luxembourg company beneficially owned by Riad Salame and directed by his son, Nady Salame, in June 2020 bought a GBP 6.25 million (US$7.8 million) property in West London, according to records obtained by OCCRP. The asset earns GBP 320,000 (US$428,543.68) in annual rental income from commercial tenants, according to a chartered surveyor which valued the property.

The same company in December 2020 bought a GBP 4.9 million (US$6.5 million) property in the expensive Kings Cross area of central London.

Salame’s companies and assets span multiple countries across the globe, including Germany, Belgium and the U.K., as well as favorable tax havens, such as Panama, Liechtenstein and the British Virgin Islands.

Several countries are coordinating their prosecution efforts, according to Le Monde, which reported that last month, a number of European prosecuting authorities met in The Hague with the French and Lebanese prosecutors in charge of investigating Salame, to form a transnational investigative team to facilitate the exchange of information in the case.

Provocation
